I'm honestly sorry you've had such a bad experience with Invisible Man book fans. Especially when the '33 movie is like, objectively great??

I’m not sure about objectively, but I’ll say that subjectively it’s a lot better than other adaptations at the time and the years prior to that. (shudders over the black and white “adaptation” of the Wizard of Oz)

I hate when hardcore book nerds are so insistent that absolutely everything needs to stick 100% to the book even down to the most insignificant details or it’ll suck because… sometimes not everything in the canon material is that great? Other times some things just won’t translate well to a visual medium? (Griffin wrestling Kemp on his bed while the former is still naked conjures up some pretty unfortunate mental images.) Hell, transferring one kind of visual medium to another one doesn’t always work out that great (“ugly” and deformed versions of The Penguin look fine or sometimes even charming in cartoon form, not so much in the live action Batman Returns), so expecting nothing but complete accuracy for doing that with a written medium can be a bit much.

I know that point may seem a bit hypocritical given that I recently had a nitpick regarding accuracy in an unused Batman sequel script of all things, and yeah it sucks when an adaptation alters or omits certain details that are important and/or significant in the original, but the degree I’ve seen it in hardcore book stans is frustrating (i.e. “Griffin’s hair color is wrong so therefore this adaptation sucks”). So many I’ve come across seem to believe that if it’s not completely accurate to the original in every way then it’s completely and objectively garbage, which is such a reductive take to have. Something can be a bad adaptation of something else and still be considered good (Die Hard isn’t an accurate adaptation of Roderick Thorp’s Nothing Lasts Forever, but it’s still widely regarded as a fantastic film), and something can be very loyal to the source material and still be bad (The Fifty Shades of Grey film is decently accurate… but it’s Fifty Shades, of course it sucks (most if not all warnings for the video’s content are at the beginning)). It’s fine to judge something as far as it being an adaptation goes, but going “bad adaptation = bad film/show/comic/etc.” is, well, not a great way to look at things.

Plus, at least the 1933 film doesn’t have Griffin turn himself invisible to fake his death and then reenact the basic plot of The Cat and the Canary but more violent torment Flora and try to singlehandedly ruin her mental health for trying to defy him.

I wholeheartedly agree with your additions in the tags, sadly I could only have one example under each section so I had to pick and choose who to add in some cases ahfsajkh. But yeah your additions get my stamp of approval!
