Last year, @hellogarbagetime (5MlL3 on Twitter) made me this as a present, and I want to post it here so it won’t get lost among my computer files. @hellogarbagetime, you already know I love this because I yelled at you in all caps, but thank you again for the gift. It made me melt because wow, a friend thought of me! Wow, a friend made something for me! Wow! 

Look at the forehead touch, the soft placement of Steve’s hand on Tony’s cheek, and Tony’s hand circling the wrist of the hand Steve’s touching him with! Look at long-haired, bearded Steve! Those are all my favorite things. I’M FALLING APART.<3

This is written for Art/Fic Madness on Cap-IM, for @hellogarbagetime‘s time bittersweet and beautiful art that you can see here.

Tony is very pale and very thin, standing in Steve’s doorway, an uncertain expression on his face.

“Come here,” Steve says, because he doesn’t need to ask what it’s about. There are so many answers: the loss of the Tower, the loss of Tony’s sobriety, all the people they didn’t manage to save . . .

Tony’s face just about crumbles, but he takes the step separating him from Steve, wraps his arms round him, and Steve holds him back as hard as he can without actually hurting Tony. His uniform feels rough against Tony’s silk shirt, but Tony doesn’t seem to mind. He’s clinging to Steve, and he’s not crying but he’s definitely not all right either.

“I didn’t know where else to go,” Tony whispers into Steve’s ear. “I got a hotel room, but—the minibar—I was scared—”

Tony never shies from talking about his alcoholism, is always the first to point out his issues, but he’d been so strong all these years. Steve can’t imagine how he must feel now, and he wants to make it better but he knows there’s not much he can do aside from being here for Tony.

“It’s okay,” Steve says. “It will be okay.”

Tony shakes all over. “How,” he says. “Everything that matters is gone.”

Steve holds on to him closer. “We’re together,” he says. “That’s what matters.”

Tony moves away. “Do you mean it?” he asks, terribly vulnerable.

“Yes.”

Tony surges forward and captures Steve’s mouth in a kiss. It’s equal measures fear and desperation, but Steve knows all about the depths of love underneath it, and he answers in kind, his grip on Tony turning almost bruising as he kisses him back. He makes sure to let Tony know his own feelings run just as strong.

“We worked through so much already,” he says when they separate. “We’ll keep doing that.”

“Okay,” Tony says, and his unshakeable belief in Steve is humbling and more than a little nerve-racking. “Okay.”

Steve knows him, though, possibly better than Tony knows himself. He knows that as soon as they’re separate, Tony will start doubting himself again, seeing the darkest paths to the future.

The decision isn’t hard.

He lets Tony go, only for a moment, but Tony immediately looks at him questioningly. Steve just smiles as he reaches for his own neck, plucking his dog tags from underneath his uniform and pulling them over his head.

“Here.” He puts them over Tony’s neck, a promise and a reminder.

Tony touches his hand to the dog tags, his eyes wide. “Are you—”

“Do not ask me if I’m sure,” Steve interrupts. “I’ve been sure of us for a very, very long time.”

Tony closes his hand over the dog tags and nods. “I—Me too,” he says.

“I know,” Steve tells him, and pulls him in again, wraps his arms around Tony’s body and keeps him close. Tony just leans his head on Steve’s shoulder and lets himself be held.

I'm in the MCU discord server and as far as I can tell, going off Tumblr was good for Sabre. she said that she felt really inspired to write. in the end, I feel like mental health comes before anything else and if that was the right decision for her I'm happy. it's just sad that some people in the fandom are so toxic that she even needed tkake that decision

oh for sure for sure, gotta take care of yourself first no matter what. im glad that she found that, thats a similar reason why nasa left. but at the same time, sabre shouldnt have had to go thru that shit to the point she went that far. i hope maybe one day she comes back bc she was one of the reasons i myself enjoyed being in fandom but ill support whatever she does

I’m stunned at how you captured the emotions of this moment so perfectly that I’m a little verklempt (also a little verklempt seeing “So was I” in Tony’s handwriting on Steve’s wrist after thinking about it for so long; thank you for putting up with all the details I threw your way and for all the research you put in to make this. It’s incredible). I had this scene in my head for months while working on LPAYS, and this is exactly how I imagined it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.<3
