They call her Love. A little over a year ago, she approached me outside and asked if I owned the plus size store. When I told her that I did, she pulled out a business card that one of my regular customers had given & sent her my way. "I was wondering if you have any clothes to donate... Well, scrubs. I just got this new job and I need scrubs," Love said. We walk in and go to the area where the scrubs were displayed. As we continue our conversation, I learn that Love is homeless and has just landed a job three days ago. She lives in her car and at times goes days without eating. When we select 4 sets she tells me she almost did not come in because she did not know how I would receive her. "We're all in this together, Love. It's only clothes," I tell her. When I ask her about her dream she tells me is to become a writer-- but she must get a place to live first. Before I hug her on her way, I open the register and put $10 in her shopping bag, so she may have lunch on me as a small gift of congratulations. Hello Dream, He is my unassuming, unknown friend. I don't know his name, for he is deaf-mute, but we somehow still manage to communicate. He is the tidiest, well kept, homeless friend I have met. Each time he visits me, I share a cup of coffee and garlic knots he is so grateful for. Such a small gesture brings such a smile. I wish I can know his story and ask him about his dreams. But I can't. He shares his daily stories with me sometimes with notes, sometimes with gestures, but nonetheless are stories that make my day. Hello Dream, this is what I went to couch thinking about last night, knowing I only had three hours left before another twenty-hour day began. I thought of all the homeless souls placed in my way this week and could not help, but ask 'why me?' The family from Delaware that moved to FL from cold with only a gift card for gas that were starved. Didn't ask for money, only food. Got them both food and money. My Metro man who visits me for coffee and garlic knots. Raul from Puerto Rico who lost his fortune and now sleeps on the terrazzo floor of his son's warehouse office-- got him an airbed. J the single mom of four that has been living in a motel, I gave her the news last night. Then, later N. called me after that telling me she's sleeping in a car after 9 days in a hospital, I offer her a roof in my warehouse office for a few days. Why me? Why me is the only question I have to ask the universe? But then I wonder if I should ask, "why not me?" I googled myself and it was like a trip down the memory lane. I found this, a note about seven years go, once a status on my Facebook page that it must've been extracted by web somehow. "A homeless man visited my store today. The few quarters that he had in his pocket he invested on books. I offered him free books, Bu he insisted on giving me his quarters. He walked away filled with joy as if he possessed the world's riches in his hands. In a way, he did. He left me smiling and knows that he was wealthier than many others..." Hello Dream, Last night, I had nothing left to give but my all... are words that began my journal entry this morning. These days, I feel as if I am living inside of a storybook. Some days, I just shuffle through the pages called life in anticipation of what's next. Unexplained events, unexpected souls, and indescribable encounters propel me to believe that there's a greater reason than my limited human psyche fathoms. Hence, my pen is the vehicle that takes me there and leads me to a destination I have yet to discover. Thus last night, I helped another stranger in my way even though I thought I could not. Don't know why, but did. I figured he had traveled too far in the journey of his dream to even think about of giving up. There must be a grander reason why he's crossing my path on the way to my dream and if I, this little writer me, can serve as a direction sign to his destiny, that is what I will be-- even though in the future our paths may never cross again. Hello Dream, I was walking along the highway after lending a car to two young kids looking for a job since last night. Stumbling along the construction, for a moment, I became worried not knowing how to overcome the dangers of walking along speeding traffic. And just when I thought I had hit a dead end, this bridge appeared. How timely. I snapped a quick photo, sat on the rocks and now as I compose this I think-- if we all just lead the roads less traveled, it would take us to most unexpected destinations.
