hi gunilslaugh! i really enjoyed reading all your writing 😭 can you write about going on a honeymoon trip with jiseok?
Hello, I'm glad that you enjoy reading my work :) Thank your for requesting!
Kwak Jiseok
Summary: Yours and Jiseok’s honeymoon trip. (idol/non-idol au)
WC:809
Warning:none

photo not mine credits to owner.
Jiseok didn’t care where you went for your honeymoon trip because was simply buzzing with excitement about spending time with you. Only you and him as a freshly married couple. A trip that was all about the two of you and the love that you have for one another.
Whilst on your honeymoon Jiseok loves showing off that you’re his. Wherever you go he either has his arm around your waist, thrown over your shoulders or his hand is laced with yours. He is so happy to introduce you as his spouse.
“This is my beautiful spouse y/n,” Jiseok introduces you. His words make your cheeks feel heated. You lightly nudge your elbow into his side as a way of telling him to tone it down. However he does not tone it down. If anything he tones it up.
“What? You are my beautiful spouse. I want everyone to know how lucky I am that you’re mine.” He presses a kiss to your blushing cheek. His actions and words either make people want to roll their eyes and throw up at his sweetness, makes their heart swoon with dreams of finding someone like him one day or fills them with envy that their partner doesn’t treat them like that.
“How come you never introduce me like that?” You could hear some people questioning their partners.
Over the course of your honeymoon Jiseok wants you to know how much he truly loves you. He would find himself wanting to do some of the cheesy romantic gestures he used to laugh at. A romantic candle lit dinner with rose petals littering the floor of the room. In the past dealing with all of the rose petals seemed like too much trouble. Not to mention picking them up afterwards too, but after you mentioned how cute and romantic it was Jiseok found himself looking for candles of your favorite scent.
Jiseok’s hands covered your eyes as you entered the place you were temporarily staying at for your honeymoon.
“Is this really necessary?” you laughed, partially waddling into the room.
“Yes, it ruins the surprise if you can see.” You can hear the playfulness in his voice. “Ok are you ready?” he asked, stopping or two’s waddling.
“Absolutely,” you answered. Jiseok removed his hands from your eyes. You blinked your eyes a couple of times. Allowing your eyes to adjust to the low light. Once they adjust you see the rose petals scattered around the floor, making up heart shaped. One big one that goes around the table that was lit with candles and a few more rose petals scattered around the table cloth. You couldn’t keep the tears from pricking your eyes.
“You said this kind of thing was too cheesy,” you said, turning around to face Jiseok. Jiseok cups your face in his hands.
“It is, but if you want cheesy I’ll give you all the cheesy you want,” he says.
“Thank you.” You moved to hug him. Jiseok warmly hugs you back. He slightly rocks you both side to side.
“C’mon let’s eat,” he smiled down at you.
Jiseok almost doesn’t want your honeymoon to end. He has had such an amazing time with you. Your entire trip has felt magical to him. It’s made arguably felt the happiest that he has ever been. The only thing that makes him excited to go back home is the fact that when you do he gets to live the rest of his life with you. He can’t wait to do that too. He can’t wait for your life as a married couple together. To be by each other's sides through great things and face hardships together.
On the actual trip back home from your honeymoon Jiseok holds your hand in his, staring at your wedding rings. He’ll lift your hand to his lips, pressing a kiss right over your ring.
“Thank you for choosing me to spend your life with,” he whispered just above the skin of your hand. You can feel his lips ghosting over your skin as he speaks.
“Did you really give me a choice?” you joked. Jiseok laughed, pressing a kiss to the back of your hand.
“No, from the moment I met you, you were going to be mine. Plus I’m the best option for you anyway. No one else could beat me,” bragged. You didn’t want to go and give him a big head, so you didn’t say it out loud, but you agreed with him. He was the best option for you and you didn’t think there was anyone else who could even compare to him. Instead you brought his hand up to your lips to press a kiss over his wedding ring. Resulting in Jiseok smiling the most beautiful smile.
For your first wedding anniversary Jiseok suggests going on a honeymoon 2.0.

"Do you think it's okay to wear this, or am I gonna make the spa workers uncomfortable?"
"Oh, wear whatever you want! I got nervous, too, because of my whole downstairs thing and siblings being weird, but honestly? Water is water. I personally go nude."
Aurora hummed, looking at herself in the mirror, turning to see her pert ass on display in her bathing suit. Her tail swayed happily, and an equal smile went on her face. Sunshine had invited her out for a small date together, moreso just to take care of themselves. The older Ghoulette had reserved the Abbey's spa for 5 p.m. Their nails, hair, skin treatment all would be done along with a massage and time in the heated spring water.
Honestly? It was perfect. They've been needing a date, anyways.
The multi reached down and began to put on her casual clothes, bikini strings peeking ever so slightly at the top. Sunshine had just finished tying the lace of her skirt up before offering her hand, the two quickly linking together.
"Are you excited?" Sunny purred, holding the door open for her shorter mate.
"Oh, fuck yeah!" They shared laughter. "This is actually my first time getting to go! They're always so busy and booked, I kinda stopped attempting an appointment a few months ago."
"Oh, really? I'm actually a regular there at this point." Sunshine hummed, "Then I'm glad we can do this together."
The walk to the spa was a bit of a long one, having to wear their helmets as they crossed the threshold to the human section. They received waves and hellos as they passed, Aurora swaying their hands back and forth. It was a separate building, further away from the abbey as it settled right on top of the hot springs — obvious from the smoke chimney ever so slowly releasing steam.
Entering, the smell of an ocean breeze took over. Of course, it'd make sense for a majority of water ghouls to work here. Sunshine approached the front desk, checking them in and happily chatting to the Sister at reception. Aurora made herself comfortable on the soft couch, looking at all the decor in dim lights. This... Honestly was relaxing already and they haven't even started. It took a little bit longer before the door opened, Aurora filled with pure excitement as she got up and took the light ghoulette's hand again, being led through the hallway and into a giant space that connected.
The hot springs sat in the middle, massage chairs for pedicures and manicures along the wall, then two seperate stations for hair and makeup if requested. There was a few changing curtains propped up, and two doors that read "Mud Salon" and "Sauna."
"Ohh, damnit! If I knew I was bringing you, would've just upgraded us both to the full package instead of just matching you with me." Sun pouted. "I'm sorry Rory."
"No, no! It's okay! Honestly, I'm so excited to be here."
Sunshine smiled wider, leaning over and kissing her mate who giggled. They were handed bath robes temporarily, moving to the changing area to strip their casual clothes. Rory opted to keeping her bathing suit on despite Sunshine confirming they could be nude earlier, her comfort taking priority. As she exited, Sunny was waiting for her as were two water ghouls with two siblings.
"Hello!" The first water spoke. "We're going to start with your claws and face mask, does that sound alright?"
"Ohh, absolutely!" Aurora chirped, practically bouncing.
Led to the chairs, Aurora couldn't help but jump as the chair began to vibrate and knead into her back, purring once she got used to it — sending a quick glare to Sunshine as she snorted at the reaction. There was some kind of water drum being played over the speakers, Rory too occupied to not eat the tray of cucumbers next to her as the male water ghoul began to carefully place a face mask on her warm cheeks. The food she was eyeing was placed over her eyes, trying to relax and let herself be touched gently.
She could feel her left arm being rubbed, thumbs pressed into her flesh while her right leg was getting the same treatment. Each worker made their way down, massaging her hand, fingers, and toes before clipping down her nails. Honestly, Rory could've fallen asleep as they began to file down her claws. Both her hands and feet were soaked into warm water, and she's positive that's when she did fall asleep.
"Aurora," Sunny sang, causing the smaller ghoulette to hum and open her eyes. "Hi, sweetie! You okay?"
"Yeah, just got super comfortable."
"Good! They didn't want to wake you up, but I know you really wanted to experience this. Ended up picking out your nail color! Do you like it?"
The multi looked down, gasping as the gentle pink she adored on her claws. "Oh, I love it!"
"I knew you would!" Sunshine showed off her bright orange nails. "It's massage time, princess."
"Ohh, yes your majesty!"
The two began giggling, being led to a seperate room. They were settled right against each other as each knot, kink, and tight muscle was relieved. What Aurora didn't expect however, was her tail being included. She squealed as her tail base was rubbed, face turning dark.
"Holy shit, you gotta warn me before you do that." She laughed, the masseuse laughing with their own apology.
While still on the table, oils and treatment were placed on their skin, getting to smell each offered item and picking what they liked the most. By time they were done, both women were practically shining. They started talking back and forth in the salon chairs, getting trimmed and washed.
"—And then guess what I fucking seen? Rain! Leaving Mist's room!"
Aurora gasped. "Shut up! No you didn't! You are absolutely lying to me right now!"
"I'm so serious! And better yet? He was limping!!"
"Mist fucked him?!"
Sunshine nodded erratically, the two busting into laughter again. "Oh fuck this reminds me of the time I seen Cumulus peg Papa!"
This time, it was Sunshine's turn to scream.
After feeling absolutely perfected, ending their time in the hot springs was exactly what they needed. Aurora held Sunshine tightly as they cuddled together in the bubbling water. Purrs and silent kisses exchanged, little touches with promise of when they returned to the den.
"Thank you, for today." Rory mumbled.
"Of course, babe! I'm sorry we don't spend enough time together."
She simply shrugged. "Eh, we just stay so busy all the time! It's not your fault. I love cherishing what we do when we can."
The light ghoulette smiled, her teeth showing in that classic, perfect fashion. They leaned in, hands cupping one another's face as their lips intertwined. Aurora sat up more to take the lead, hand going down Sunshine's cheek to press against her collar bone. Pulling away after a moment, both of their eyes were half lidded, faces pink.
"Hey, Rory?" Sunshine hummed, wrapping her arms tight around her mate's hips.
"Yess?"
"Would you love me no matter what?"
"Of course!" Aurora tilted her head. "What kind of question is that?"
Sunshine giggled, mischief in her eyes. "This kind!"
Aurora didn't even get a second as Sunshine dunked them both underwater, resurfacing with loud laughs, Aurora splashing water on the other which quickly started a water war.

Suzaku put you on house arrest for an indefinite amount of time, per direct orders from Kirin. Your usual territories would be divided among Nezumi, probably-Hato, and Shika. Your debt was temporarily arrested and someone from Genbu’s and Seiryu’s divisions was posted on a 24/7 watch. You were going stir crazy, but at least you were finally eating something other than cup noodles. Your guard dogs brought you food because you weren’t allowed to leave under any circumstance. It was almost like you were being waited on hand and foot, but you knew better.
Aside from telling your wardens that you were hungry, the only other human interaction you got were a few text messages from Nezumi. He was actually kind of cool when you were talking to him, but you still kept anyone from Wuxing at arm’s length. You couldn’t make any ties if you wanted to truly be free from them. Though with all the free time you’d been given, you were left alone to think a lot more than you’d like. Ideas you wouldn’t even bother entertaining were creeping in your mind and you couldn’t get fresh air. You couldn’t go anywhere, not even with a guard.
It did make you curious about why the executives of Wuxing were putting such strict measures in place, but you would likely never figure out the answer. Kirin was the only one who knew everything about everyone, and you’d only ever heard his voice. It was obvious that you were important to this new cult that was arising from the shadows. You called it a cult because you weren’t sure what it was. It didn’t feel like a gang or crime syndicate because the people weren’t trying to infringe on territory or sending declarations of war. They were just targeting you and it looked like they were also messing with Rokuhara Tandai. Two of the Three Deities, but you weren’t sure if Kanto Manji was experiencing anything similar.
Next to the hypotheticals that played out in your mind, the nagging thought of, Why me? repeated endlessly. Who you were was a ghost. Who you are now was so far removed from that girl, you wouldn’t recognize yourself at all. But how did these people know you? Know your family? You tried racking your brain for memories, but nothing came to you.
Unfortunately, the digging into your own mind triggered some delightful nightmares. You would wake up in a cold sweat, gasping for air like you were drowning. Some nights you paced around your room, trying to make yourself so tired that you would pass out in a dreamless sleep. It worked about once, and then never again. The only semi-reliable way for you to get sleep was to leave the lights on, but you hated it.
Days passed by in a blur before you realized you probably needed to update the Haitanis about what was going on. Digging your private burner out from under your sink, you tried to turn it on, only to find that it was dead. You hoped it wouldn’t take long to charge, but when did anything ever go your way?
When you heard it chime, you ran into the bathroom and then back to your room. The people watching over you were less likely to hear you talking that way, and you didn’t need anyone getting suspicious. Talking to yourself sounded much different than carrying on an actual conversation. You stared at the three numbers you had in your call history. You couldn’t remember whose was whose, so you picked at random and listened to the ringing.
“Hello?”
“Shit, I thought this was Ran,” you muttered.
“I am going to hang up,” Rindou said, no emotion in his voice.
“Wait, wait,” you whispered urgently. “We’ve got a problem?”
“We?”
“Yes, we,” you spat. You sighed before going on. “I’m on house arrest.”
There was only resounding silence. You weren’t sure if you needed to go on and explain or if you needed to wait for the information to sink in. You could imagine the irritation on Rindou’s face, and normally, you’d be ecstatic. But not this time.
“What did you do?”
“Wow, okay so you think I just did something? Seriously?”
“Lotus, get to the point.”
“You know that group that’s been messing with us? They’re after me for some reason, and I don’t know why. I can’t imagine why. I’m not important in any sense of the word. But Suzaku put me on lockdown with orders from Kirin. I have members from other divisions keeping an eye on me, and I can’t go anywhere.”
“Seriously?” The suspicion in Rindou’s voice was almost offensive to you.
“Use that tiny brain in your thick skull!” you snapped. “I don’t want to be stuck like this. Why would I want to put myself in this situation?”
“So what do you want us to do about it?”
“I don’t know,” you admitted. “I don’t even know what’s happening anymore or how many days it’s been. I just—I don’t know if I’m going to be able to make the job.”
“You sound stressed.”
“Really? That’s all you took away from that? Fuck it, let me talk to Ran.”
“He’s out.”
“Okay, so then I’ll call him.”
“He left his phone here.”
“You’re lying.”
“I don’t care if you don’t believe me. Try it.”
You hung up and found a different number you figured was Ran’s since the third number you had had never called you. You had only spoken to the Haitanis. You dialed and swore vehemently when you heard Rindou pick up.
“Surprise,” he said flatly. “Trust me, I wouldn’t lie about Ran not being here. I don’t want to talk to you any more than you want to talk to me.”
If your anxiety and stress weren’t so high, you’d try to say something snarky. But you couldn’t collect yourself enough to do that. Tears blurred your eyesight and you quickly wiped them away. “I don’t know what to do,” you said, accepting the defeat in your tone. “I don’t know why they want anything to do with me. But I can’t sneak out like this or my life will certainly be forfeit.”
“I’ll talk to Ran. We’ll try to get in touch.” Rindou’s voice was surprisingly gentle. Maybe your mind was making things up now, hearing sympathy where there was none.
You chuckled bitterly, “Well, I’m not going anywhere.”
Tumblr media
That night presented you with what was probably the worst nightmare you’d had so far. It started off with you walking home from school. Standard, not unusual. You approached your old apartment that you called home and yelled that you were back. But no one responded. At this point, it felt like you were watching yourself, screaming at your younger self to leave. To not go investigating. Because you knew how this went, but dream-you did not.
You watched as you opened the door to where your mother usually hid. The room was dark and your mother wasn’t sprawled out on her futon in a drunk haze as usual. You left, calling out, “Mom?” But there was no answer. It wasn’t like your mother went anywhere. Lately she’d been even more irritable and reclusive, but you had just thought she was in one of her moods. Some part of your naive heart wanted to make sure your mother was okay, so you kept searching. Fortunately, or maybe not, the apartment wasn’t very big. Instinctively, you checked the bathroom next. The door was closed and it didn’t seem like the lights were off, but when you opened the door you would never have been prepared for the sight before you.
Water had splashed on the floor, tinged orange. As your eyes scanned up they landed on your mother’s corpse. It was as horrifying in the dream as it was when you actually experienced it. The bath water was a rusty color, staining the edges of the tub. Your mother’s head was leaned over the edge, eyes empty and wet hair stringy. One arm was slung over the edge, dried blood clinging to where she had sliced into her own skin.
You screamed until the neighbors came over, disgruntled about the noise, but when they saw the scene, they immediately called the cops. During the actual incident, you remembered the cops coming and asking you questions. One of the kinder ones tried to shield you from your mother’s body, but it was too late for it to do anything. Your psyche was already damaged. You remembered that your brother came home and he was furious because the cops could find his drug stash. He waited until they were gone to take that frustration out on you. That’s how that event happened in your life.
But in the dream, you saw your mother’s limp arm twitch. There was a black spot on it, like your mind was covering something up, but you couldn’t recall anything else on your mother’s bloodied forearms. In your periphery you could see your brother’s feet, his presence hidden by the shadows that were creeping up behind you. You sat on numb legs, listening to water slosh and the muffled screams of your brother.
And then you were ripped backwards, tumbling into the darkness. What felt like hands grabbed at your body, voices dripping with ill intent whispered around you. A gentle caress and a sweet lie echoed in your ears. Touches inched higher and higher up your legs and rough hands wrapped around your neck. You couldn’t scream. You couldn’t make any sort of noise. You felt yourself cry, but only heard the angry slaps and yelling that served to discipline you.
You awoke thrashing, voice hoarse like you’d been screaming. Your heartbeat was erratic and breathing desperately ragged. The cold sweat on your skin felt restrictive, but the air of your apartment felt suffocating. You needed to leave. You needed to get out. You couldn’t stay here any more, house arrest be damned.
Running on a panicked autopilot, you threw on a pair of sweats and erupted from your apartment, not caring about the slamming door or the alarmed exclamations of people. You just kept sprinting, like you could stay ahead of your demons and memories that haunted you. The night air was cold and felt like pin pricks on your skin. You could feel the tears streaming down your cheeks and the tightness of your chest. Struggling to breathe, you kept pushing on. You had to. You didn’t know where you were going, letting your feet carry you anywhere else.
You weren’t sure how long you’d been running, but you found yourself at your secret spot. The smell of the sea centered you, and you slowly took in your surroundings. You saw the sun trying to break the horizon, lightening the sky just barely. You heard the breeze and waves and birds. You could feel the cool air and solid ground beneath you.
You had managed to calm yourself down, but it wasn’t enough. You collapsed to the ground, ignoring the pain in your knees, and you let yourself feel. You screamed. You cried. You begged.  Silence answered you, but you always knew that would be the case.
When you ran out of tears and energy, you realized that running out of your apartment was probably not the best move. But you had to get out. If you didn’t you’d probably have done something even dumber. You would let them be mad at you. You didn’t care if they were. They probably saw how frantic you were, and honestly, you were surprised they didn’t pursue you. It wasn’t like you were the fastest person around.
You watched the sun rise, the only indication that time was passing. You weren’t sure how long you’d been curled up, hours probably. But it didn’t matter. If the people after you got their hands on you, you didn’t care. You just wanted this entire mess to fucking stop.
“I figured you’d be here,” you heard a familiar voice and turned slightly, seeing Shika standing there. She didn’t look annoyed, but you couldn’t read her expression as she approached you. She took a seat next to you and spoke gently, “I come here too when I need to think.”
“So they’re looking for me? How pissed are they?”
“Livid,” Shika didn’t bother to lie to you. “I wouldn’t want to be you right now.”
You snorted, “I don’t wanna be me right now.”
“Tell me, Lotus, girl to girl, what’s going on with you?”
“How much of my sob story do you want?”
Shika shrugged. “Whatever you want to tell me. Things have been kinda crazy lately and none of the Four Symbols are saying anything. Just that you were at the center of it.”
“Do you hate me for it?”
“No,” Shika said, shaking her head. “If anything, with you out of the way, the rest of us can get decent jobs.”
You laughed mirthlessly. “I appreciate the honesty.”
“Never believed in being dishonest,” Shika told you.
“But you’re trafficking illegal goods?”
“What can I say? Gotta make ends meet somehow. Can’t earn the money I need with a standard 9 to 5.”
You took a deep breath. “I didn’t want to be a part of all of this, but my brother fucked around and I’m the one finding out.”
“What a bastard. What the hell is he doing?”
“Taking a dirt nap, or maybe swimming with the fishes. I don’t know what Wuxing did with his body.”
You didn’t know Shika that well, but she seemed pretty stoic, like nothing bothered her. You really couldn’t let a lot of things bother you in this line of work, but when you looked at her, you saw Shika’s expression of horror.
“How can you say that so plainly?”
“He sold me to Wuxing,” you said. “He was a bastard until the end. No lost love, I promise you that.”
“I’m sorry.” That was all Shika could offer, like she was lost in her own train of thought.
“It is what it is,” you said, shrugging.
“Well, it certainly explains a lot.”
You glanced at Shika from the side of your eyes. She was staring at the soft sunlight of early morning. “We were wrong about you,” she admitted. “Hato, Nezumi, and I, we hated you.”
“Yeah, I know. It never bothered me.”
“But then Nezumi told us about what you were doing for those kids, and I didn’t want to believe it. But I saw you working for them to keep them safe. I think it changed Nezumi’s image of you, and he tried to get me and Hato to at least be friendly.”
“It’s fine. I don’t want to get attached to anyone here. If I’m being honest, I hate Wuxing. I just want to pay off this insurmountable debt and just leave. Go so far away it won’t matter anymore. I would find a way to get forged documents and make up a name. Who I used to be is dead to society anyway.”
“Who were you before?”
“Just a middle schooler,” you said vaguely. “A nobody from a broken home. And I was okay with that, until I lost any hope of freedom.”
“Middle schooler?” Shika didn’t hide the shock and disgust in her voice. Most of Suzaku’s division knew you were formerly Byakko’s. Your alias gave it away anyway, and you stubbornly insisted on keeping it. You were going to take back the moniker of Lotus and make it your own. You also weren’t sure what animal Suzaku would assign you, so that’s what you fooled yourself into believing.
“Yeah,” was the only response you could come up with. “Anyway, we should be getting back, huh? I want to go face Suzaku's wrath while I’m still numb.”
Shika frowned.
“It’s okay,” you said, glancing at her. “You don’t have to pretend you care.”
The frown turned into a scowl. “Stop being so stubborn!”
“Nezumi told me something similar.”
You stood up and offered a hand to Shika. You expected someone like her to have soft, delicate hands, but they were just as rough as yours. Calluses decorating the palms and cuticles peeling. Trying not to think about it too much, you hefted Shika up and then dusted your pants off.
“Seriously, though, Lotus,” Shika said quietly. “You don’t have to go through everything alone. You trusted us for the sting operation, so trust us now too.”
You were only ever good at pushing people away. Nothing beneficial ever came from making friends, and you were never interested. You protected yourself with isolation and a facade of noisy pride. Make yourself as unlikeable as possible because you couldn’t trust anyone. The people who were supposed to fundamentally give a shit about you didn’t care about anyone but themselves. So you had to, too. It got lonely sometimes, but the only one you could depend on was you.
“You’ll have to forgive me then,” you responded, voice low and hollow. “It’s not easy for me to trust.”
Shika nodded, and the two of you headed back to the rundown apartment complex where most of Suzaku’s division dwelled. Like a disappointed parent, Suzaku was standing in front of the building. He was a new shade of red and you swore you could see the veins popping in his forehead. You didn’t expect a heartfelt reunion, in fact you were bracing yourself for an assault of fists. But Suzaku did none of that. He looked at you, voice cold and soft as he demanded, “What the fuck happened?”
“I panicked,” you said. “Had a bad nightmare. You know about what.”
Suzaku pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. “I can get Miko to bring you some sedatives—”
“No drugs,” you immediately said. “Prescription or otherwise. I don’t like how they make me feel.”
“So what do you propose?”
“Well, I don’t think being alone was the best and I’d really rather not have anyone from Genbu’s or Seiryu’s divisions in my apartment. Can some of the runners just like, visit me?”
“You’ve never wanted to connect with them before. Why now?”
You didn’t blame Suzaku for being suspicious. You would be too, but you knew you couldn’t be left alone again. You had to say dumb things to someone and pretend you were okay. You had to maintain the act you tried so hard to put on.
“Someone talked to me,” you said, gesturing with your thumb to Shika behind you. “Made me think about some things.”
“Fine, but if you run again it’s directly to Byakko you go. He knows how to keep a tight leash.”
You couldn’t fight the way your spine stiffened and your heart dropped to your gut. No. You would die before you went back to Byakko. You would give yourself up to the people after you sooner than you’d return to Byakko’s brothels in Kabukicho.
Unable to find words in your dry mouth, you bowed slightly to Suzaku. He stepped aside and you walked back to your unit. Shika tried to follow you, but Suzaku stopped her briefly so she could explain what happened. You passed by the guards posted outside your door without acknowledging them. There was too much you needed to think about, and you felt gross.
The new developments were certainly going to throw a wrench in your plans. You truly believed you’d have a better time with the company of people who could tolerate you, but if you did, you were going to have a hard time sneaking out to do the job with the Haitanis. You’d figure something out. You didn’t have another choice.

Hello! If you are doing the prompts list, could you do 19 for Star Holder? It sounds like it's supposed to be threatening, normally, but from Eclipse it sounds like it could be incredibly fluffy.
"Careful, slow down, love. You're gonna burn your tongue." This is 19 from the most recent list I shared so I assume you mean this one! (I am so sorry if you didn’t mean this one-)
That being said! :)
Some spoilers for Star Holder ahead.
(This was... meant to be fluff... it’s... Hurt/Comfort. I’m SORRY)
Nothing quite like soup when you’re feeling down, right? And down, down didn’t cover how you were feeling. You were inconsolable.
Eclipse looked at you, curled up under the covers. Sobbing as you had been for the last hour. He couldn’t really blame you.
Your life had been drastically changed in just a few days. And now, despite his efforts, it was all catching up to you.
“Darling,” he said quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed, “you have to eat. You need your strength.” You shifted under the covers, sniffling quietly.
“I... thought you were working,” came your voice, slightly muffled by the blankets.
“I was,” he set a hand on the lump in the blankets, “but Julian told me you wouldn’t answer the door when he came to bring you lunch.”
“I didn’t want him to see me like this,” you said quietly, “...sorry for troubling you. I’m alright.”
“You are far from alright,” he said, setting the steaming bowl on the table by the bed, “how could you lie so blatantly when you’re in this state?” The blankets shifted. Eclipse’s heart ached when you peeked out from under them. Face red and damp with still flowing tears.
“Come here, my love. Please?” He twisted, gesturing you closer to his open arms. Sniffling, you crawled across the bed and into his lap, tugging the blanket with you.
Long fingers delicately brushed away stray hairs that had stuck to your skin. Eclipse wrapped you up in all four of his arms, one hand rubbing soothing circles into your back.
“I am here for you,” he said quietly, “you don’t have to hide away when you’re feeling troubled.” He rocked you gently. “And please, darling, please don’t skip meals.”
“...Forgive me-
“There’s nothing to forgive,” he pressed a kiss to your temple, “I know that right now you’re feeling very overwhelmed. I promise it’s not going to be like this forever.” You nodded, wiping at your eyes.
“That being said,” Eclipse picked up the bowl again, “would you like to eat now?” He held it up for you. You wanted to refuse. To crawl back under the blankets and continue sobbing.
But when the smell of Julian’s cooking washed over you, your desire to wallow was temporarily forgotten.
“Thank you,” you said quietly.
“Anytime,” Eclipse said gently, “do you want to do this yourself?” You reached forward to take the bowl, but your hands were still shaking. With a long sigh, you accepted that Eclipse... would be feeding you.
“I don’t think I can,” you let your hand drop back into your lap.
“There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” he said gently, “you’ll regain your strength faster if you eat.” He took the spoon from the bowl and held it up for you.
You instantly went for it. Eclipse’s gentle voice stopped you, however.
"Careful, slow down, love. You're going to burn your tongue." He ran a hand down your back. You nodded, taking the time to blow on the soup before sipping at it. He was right. It was very hot.
The two of you sat in silence for some time, Eclipse patiently offering you soup a spoonful at a time. The fire’s gentle crackle would occasionally cut through the silence.
“...I kept you from work,” you said quietly.
“Work can wait a while,” he said, setting the now empty bowl to the side, “nothing is more important to me than you.” He wrapped you up and pulled you close. You slipped your arms around his neck, leaning into his chest. The gentle beat of his heart filled your head.
“I don’t know what I’m meant to do now, Eclipse,” you said quietly, “I don’t know who I am now. Outside of the temple. Away from Sun. If I... If I’m not the Star Holder... Who am I?”
“Whoever you wish to be,” he said quietly, “we will learn it together. Whatever you want to do, we will do. If there’s something you wish, you only need to tell me.” He tightened his hold on you slightly. “There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”
“But I don’t know what to do,” your eyes misted, “someone has always made that choice for me.”
“There’s no rush,” Eclipse cradled the back of your head, rocking you gently once more, “there is nothing wrong with just being here until you figure it out.”
“But if I’m not doing anything, aren’t I burdening you? I can’t just live here without working or-
“Love, you could never burden me,” Eclipse said gently, “setting the fact that I’m a god aside. I chose to bring you here. I was more than prepared to care for you for as long as you needed. If that is forever, so be it. I never find your presence burdensome.”
“Even when I’m like this?” You sniffled, burying your face into his chest.
“Even when you are like this,” Eclipse patted your back, “I love you every moment of the day. It’s not conditional. It doesn’t fade simply because you aren’t feeling well.”
You wanted to thank him, but all that came out of you was a strangled sob. Everything was so new and different and you didn’t know what to think. But Eclipse was right there. And he always had been. And you could tell he meant it when he said he always would be.
And that was what you needed more than you could say.
Someone to hold your hand and walk with you into this unknown situation. Someone to tell you that it was alright. Someone who would still be there when the fire died.
There’s no telling when you fell asleep. You must’ve tired yourself out from so much crying.
When you woke up, you rubbed at your eyes. They were slightly swollen from so much crying. The bed beside you was empty. Something that made you feel a little disappointed. But you couldn’t be angry; Eclipse had work to do. He couldn’t hold your hand every second of the-
“Did you sleep alright?” He was there? You turned and spotted him, sitting in the armchair by the fireplace.
“I thought you left,” you said quietly.
“Left? How could I leave you alone when you’re suffering?” Eclipse set his book to the side, “I’d have stayed in bed with you, but you took to kicking in your sleep.”
“Oh.” Your face flushed, “forgive me-
“There’s no reason to apologize,” Eclipse got up and came over to the bed. He sat beside you. “Did you sleep well?”
“...I had that nightmare again,” you said quietly. He nodded. Wordlessly, Eclipse opened his arms. You crawled over to him and curled up in his hold.
“We’ll take as long as you need,” he said quietly.
Sometimes that’s all you need.

man i need to rant a bit about kpop, tw for body dysmorphia/weight/ED discussions
my body has changed a LOT the last couple years as i deal with severe endometriosis that really limited my ability to exercise regularly. like, literally just carrying a light laundry basket up and down the stairs can sometimes bring me excruciating abdominal pain, even when i'm not on my period. forget working out. i went from doing yoga and zumba 5-6 days/week, to a few days a week, to 1 day a week, until it got so bad that i just gave up exercising entirely because it hurt too much.
i have gained almost 100lbs since my symptoms started worsening in 2021.
now that i've had surgery to remove the endo and treat the pain temporarily (until it grows back), i'm trying very gently to get back into regular 5-day-a-week exercise, which--after so long being sedentary--is so much easier said than done. i often feel discouraged and end my low-impact "beginner" workout sessions in frustrated tears because i cannot do even the most basic exercises anymore.
endo also destroyed my relationship with food. i fell into a bad habit of binge-eating on my "good" days whenever my GI symptoms eased up, which contributed to the weight gain. like, raiding the cabinets and stuffing my face with every food i could get my hands on so i could enjoy it while i was feeling somewhat ok, as opposed to my worse days, where i would barely eat more than, like, some hard boiled eggs and pretzels.
i don't mind looking at myself in a mirror, but seeing photos of myself nowadays or seeing myself in a video is... not good for my mental health.
especially as a kpop fan.
shinee are really the only boy group i listen to, and otherwise i primarily listen to girl groups.
it's gotten to a point where i had to stop watching blackpink videos because it seemed like every comeback they just got skinnier and skinnier and it really put me at risk for hating myself and developing an ED.
i like twice and sunmi because they are--or were, when i first discovered them--average, healthy weights. watching them did not make me feel bad about myself. they had a little more meat in their thighs, and it at least kept my own body dysmorphia at bay.
but idk, the pictures i've seen of them all in their most recent comebacks--between the veneers that have utterly changed the shapes of a lot of their faces (dahyun and mina are almost unrecognizable to me), and just how skeletal a lot of them look... i think i'm gonna have to stop watching them for the sake of my own mental health.
especially twice. idk, the dive photoshoot, they're just all so... bony.
and then to see netizens bodyshaming jeongyeon and even NAYEON??? recently??? during her waterbomb performance?!?! hello??? or everyone saying sunmi was too "fat" during tail era?!?! yeesh.
i'm not by any means knocking these women or body shaming them or whatever, they're all beautiful and i understand they're in an industry where beauty standards are INSANE. i am just commenting on the intensity of fatphobia in the entertainment industry in general and how it is causing issues for me personally, and i'm sure for so many other people.
and i mean i know a lot of these women have discussed how their own company-enforced diets are unhealthy and unsustainable and unrealistic, i just... idk, it's all very new to me, these feelings, and i don't like the way my thoughts are going recently. lots of "i shouldn't eat more than one meal a day," "i'm disgusting," "i need to be shaped like this celebrity woman" "i need to push myself on this exercise machine til i puke" etc etc.
i have never been susceptible to this type of thinking until recently, and it is largely in part because of how badly fatphobia is so so SO rampant throughout these fandoms.
and like, side-note, i think the return of fashion trends of the early 2000s is also making fatphobia so much more rampant. the fat-shaming then was *so* bad. and nowadays i see virtually ZERO body-positive advertisements anymore. it's all ozempic this, diet that, hoop or stepper exercise machines, this is how i lost 60+ pounds, and so on.

Dear Tumblr Void,
Hello again. You can guess why I'm back. It happened again, and once again I'm using tumblr as a live journal, because maybe just one person will read this and I'll feel validated.
I'm gonna start with this:
Why this is different than Sam.
~I'm getting into therapy right away
~I'm trying to lean on family and friends for support more than ever
~I'm not the victim this time. If I'm a victim, then so is Josiah. He went through just as much as I did, so if I'm a victim then so is he. I'm not innocent.
~I'm changing my life completely, even if temporarily. I'm moving in with Laura and Joe for an unknown amount of time. I don't know if I'll come back to Eau Claire in the fall for school, I don't know if I'll end up having to live in the apartment that was supposed to be ours. I don't know what the future holds and I'm trying to be ok with that.
~I'm being honest with the people in my life about what happened. I am not playing the role of the innocent victim. Just because I'm guilty doesn't make his actions right or ok, but the opposite is also true. Just because he's guilty doesn't make my actions ok.
~I realized this time there are very deep rooted issues. I have abandonment issues, not from past relationships but from my childhood. I have attachment issues from my childhood. Not from past relationships, and it's something I need to work on and heal from.
~ I'm not going to get into a rebound situation. History says the rebound does more damage than good, and I know that what I need is to figure out how to be a person again, on my own.
Here's what's hard this time:
~ I want to still talk to him. He cut me off completely, which is good for both of us. But I still crave him, like a bad street drug.
~His sister is still talking to me. She's very helpful, but I also know that she gets to see him and talk to him and it makes me jealous and sad because I know in my heart that I will never see him again, or hear his voice again.
~ I don't want to lose my opportunity in Eau Claire at school, but I also can't know for sure right now if coming back will be too much, I can't know if coming back will make me miss him again. Would I be coming back just in hopes of running into him again?
~ I want to know if he's back on tinder. That's what I did with Sam, when we broke up I downloaded tinder just to see if he was back on and active. I want to do that with Josiah, but I know that if I do, and he is active, it will shatter me and I will spiral even more.
~ I cant eat. I have such a loss of appetite that eating takes more mental energy than I have right now. It's been two days and I've already lost a pound and a half.
~ I can't sleep. He was in my bed every night. I cant lay down without thinking about how he would hold me. So I bought melatonin and NyQuil so that I pass out. If I'm unconscious, I can't miss him as much.
~ I have to learn how to navigate my own emotions while also recognizing that I'm not the only victim. I was trauma bonded, and I know that it's on me just as much as it's on him. I can't quite find the balance between not hating but also not glorifying him.
~ I constantly think about how he might have ended the relationship and gone no contact to protect me, and the not knowing hurts. Did he really do it out of love and care? Did he do it only because he was mad? Was it purely selfish? I might never know and I'm having a hard time accepting that.
~ The future I had planned is gone, and I'm mourning that just as much as I'm mourning the loss of him. I was attached to him AND the future I thought I had with him.
That's all for now tumblr, any more and I'll start crying again. Thanks for giving me false hope of validation once more <3

Haunting!Yuu AU
my masterlist!
Hello!
So I've just noticed that I already had 80 follows!!
Thank you so much hehe! <3
I didn't actually think I would get that much when all I do is write something only whenever I want. So I really appreciate it so much yet felt like I don't fully deserve it, do forgive me for being so irresponsible so often.
Anyways here is another on Twisted Wonderland au!
Summary: A ghost suddenly showed up in NRC well this news isn't really shocking or new but this ghost is too much of a problem, with too much chaos, and secrets to unfold.
No ships, gender fluid!Yuu
____________________________________________________________
Night Raven College is never lacking in magic, knowledge, talking portraits, and ghosts. It is rather common knowledge for the students and staff alike.
Yet something new yet not came causing confusion and chaos all around it's peaceful(?) campus.
A certain ghost, whom still has most of its human features and wore the NRC student uniform yet there's no telling what dorm they belong to, claims to be magicless yet have been weirdly the student's magicc seems to get drained really badly whenever they are near, they can't remember most of its human days yet remembers it's name "Yuu" they said.
And has been saying really weird and mysterious things such as being from their past but not too long around the time this batch of first years came, their present, and their future and that they were friends and related to most of them.
Yuu is a rather quiet ghost but when they talk, they would say rather cool and weird stuff or warnings about future events then forgets everything within seconds.
They wouldn't bother everyone but only haunts specific people such as the dorm heads, vice heads, 1st year's, students really related to those mentioned, and the staff especially the Headmaster.
They would bother him the most!
"Great sevens, Yuu! Can you not drain me of my magic how will I work?"
"As if you're working your only thinking about your next vacation plans."
"Wait! How did you— no I did not! I was thinking about the school's next event for I am gracious!"
"Sigh. You should cancel your plans for the next next month another blot event will happen and little grim might eat the blot stones again."
"Wut?!"
"...Did I say something weird again?"
"..."
Actually, the whole school can't really escape them. That one time around the first time Yuu showed up they drained the almost all of the students and staff in just a week! Crowley was forced to set a 3-day special vacation for the students ONLY to get their former strength back while the staff stayed to deal with Yuu.
They were honestly surprised that they didn't put up a fight as soon they heard about them trying to hopefully send her to rest since ghosts that remained in the living world have yet to move on to the afterlife because of an unfinished business or are just deeply attached to the place they haunt.
The keyword was trying. They are trying to send them to the afterlife but have continuously failed. Crowley is both stressed and a tad bit happy that he finally found something Sam is OUT OF STOCK!
" Hah! Take that Sam!"
"This is not a celebrating matter, Dire!"
"Whoops...excuse me for my actions Crewel" :D
"Sigh"
But they did find a temporary solution which is a little golden bracelet Sam had that can temporarily hold Yuu from draining the whole school dry but can only last for about a week so every end of the week they are to put another one. That is why they are still able to continue classes and school events! Which is making Crowley's wallet and himself cry since he had to pay Sam every time they are to buy the item for the sake of the school so his boasting about being gracious has sadly worsened.
Yuu has been extremely close to the first years, they don't know why but they felt rather connected to the lonesome spirit almost as if they were best friends especially Ace and Deuce they felt rather inseparable with the said ghost.
Everyone that Yuu spends the most time with felt the same. They were oddly connected but at the same time, they weren't. And every moment they spend with Yuu from classes and such felt oddly familiar like...
"Didn't we bake this Chestnut tart before? but..."
"Strange that I felt like I know yet I don't about Riddle's overblot and how it started?"
"I felt like at some point I knew beforehand who was the suspect in regarding the student getting injured?"
"I felt like we had these anemones on us before but I'm sure this is the first time I had it?"
"I'm sure Jamil was controlling Kalim before hand but don't know why and how??"
"Strange I felt like Vil would try poisoning Neige way before?"
They were a really odd ghost but a friendly one at that. They would even hang out with Malleus often and talks to them casually and even call them Tsunotaro fully knowing his identity. Sebek does NOT approve even if Lilia does!! Malleus really enjoys their company.
"HOW DARE YOU COME ANY CLOSER TO WAKA-SAMA YOU EVIL SPIRIT!"
"...anyways look Tsunotaro, I made you this small abandoned house with gargoyles and some grotesque."
"AND HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU STOP CALLING THEM TSUNOTARO!!"
"Fufufu~ They're so energetic again!"
"Thank you dear spirit for this lovely gift"
"Welcome, Tsunotaro."
" CALL HIM MALLEUS-SAMA, STUPID GHOST! STOP IGNORING ME!!!"
Yuu is an odd yet comforting ghost. They listen to their problems and help them cope and move on. Most of the students know about it because they all had experience relying on the troublesome spirit. At some point, they too wanted to help the spirit but there were no clues to help them move on and find peace.
"Hey Yuu, where do you even live?"
"hmm...Ramshackle"
"no like your actual home"
"...dunno."
"Oh come on there must be something!"
"Why are you even helping me?"
"AH! ...I..uh...I...for giving me advice for Monstro lounge! This is only a business partnership, nothing personal here!"
"Hmm...if you say so...I think it's *country name*"
"Hmm...never heard of that place...but I'll do my best to research it! Jade, Floyd! off to work!"
As odd as it was they still like being with the said ghost and Yuu seems to share the same feelings.
They were familiar yet not...
A tiny part of them desires to stay close but none of them knew why.
even the staff felt the same weird feeling as if the said spirit was once their student, their child...
...Could there be another timeline where they used to be together?
Where Yuu used to be human, goes to class with them, had fun with them, cause trouble and more?
Maybe...maybe they could bring it back...
But the question is how?

12 Nights of XXXMAS | Day 1: Breeding
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fit for a Princess
Pro-Hero!Deku x Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Upset at your fiance for not being able to come home on time for Christmas Eve, he makes it up to you with a gift only the likes of you could adorn. But now it’s time to fill your princess duties...
Words: 4.6k
Warnings/Tags: mirror sex, breeding, overstimulation, a dash of dumbification
Notes: uhh this was supposed to be like 2k words but then libido existed. Tagging @butterscotchbaku because their dom deku supremacy rhetoric has corrupted into my brain cells.
Tumblr media
The view of the wintery outside was marvelous from your window. The snow painted the scenery a shimmering white, the various Christmas decorations adorning neighbor’s homes could place you directly into a wonderland, and the kids giggling and playing as they made snow angels under the street lights created the perfect picture of innocence.
Inside your home wasn’t bad either. The fire cracking at the fireplace sounded tranquil for your auditory senses, the Christmas tree in the living room gave you peaceful nostalgia from your childhood, and the smell of the sugar cookies baking in the oven was comparable to a candle from the most luxurious of department stores.
And yet, you were upset.
Or perhaps anger is the more fitting emotion dwelling over you currently. Your lover and recent fiancé, Midoriya Izuku was currently not treating you like the winter princess you deserved to be treated as. At this moment he was out doing patrols and other related hero work instead of tending to your very important needs.
What was even the point of doing all that work if his so-called ‘love of his life’ was sad, frustrated, and alone? It was easy for you to take the holidays off, granted you weren’t the #1 hero, but even still, your fiancé being in such high stature should make it easier to take days like this off, right? Surely, he was doing this to get back at you for something. After-all, he said he’d definitely be home by 4 p.m., and yet here it is closing in at 8:25 p.m, and you’ve yet to see even a text message from the man.
You even went out to get his specially crafted gift this morning so that he’d have something to look forward to on Christmas. And now you were regretting that.  He didn’t deserve anything special from you after pulling a no-show on his own fiancé on Christmas Eve.
*brrrring!* *brrrring!*
“Arf! Arf! Arf!”
The sound of the timer going off alerted you of the cookies being done and temporarily brought you out of your pity session. It also alerted you and Midoriya’s one-year old puppy who was always so excited to hear when it seemed food was ready.
“Calm down, Mighty. You can’t have sugar cookies, remember? They aren’t good for you.”
Quickly wrapping an apron around your waist, you tucked on the oven mitt and carefully placed the cookies from the oven to the kitchen counter.
“Arf! Arf!”
“You are so needy, aren’t you? You look like Izu but you have my personality.” You reached into the cabinet above you to grab the dog treats you stored away. Grabbing two of the biscuits, you bent down to hand them to your puppy. “Here baby, you can have these.”
Satisfied with how happily little Mighty was chopping on the treats, you decided to wait for your own treats to cool before decorating them. Going to sit down on the couch, you grabbed the remote to flick on the television, an attempt at distracting yourself from current frustrations.
A bad decision considering everything broadcasted now seemed to deal with lovers and families coming together for the holidays. The cheery smiles and rosy cheeks on the actors’ faces made you burn with jealousy as you sat fiancé-less in your home.
“Jake! You actually…you actually came back to me for the holidays!”
“Of course, I did Katherine. I wouldn’t miss spending Christmas with you for the world.”
You sucked your teeth at the overly-dramatic displays of affection, deciding to turn off the T.V. all together. Rubbing your fingers along the bridge of your nose, it seemed even Mighty took pity on you, as he jumped on the couch to snuggle his little body into yours. Picking him up and cuddling him into your chest, you fantasized about your fiancé walking through those doors. How he’d pick you up and carry you to the bedroom, peppering kissing along your face and telling you how-
*clink!*
The sound of the door unlocking made your heart jump and Mighty to jump from your arms to run to the door, barking in excitement at who’d soon walk through.
“Heheh~ Hello little Mighty. Did you take care of Y/N while I was gone?”
“Arf! Arf! Arf!”
His tail wagged enthusiastically as Midoriya bent down to rub all around his ears. “You did? Such a good boy.” Standing back up, he looked at your figure still sitting on the couch, arms folded and lips formed into a pout. “I’m sorry I’m late, baby. Some things came up on the way home.” Putting down his gear by the door, he walked into the kitchen, immediately in amazement at the cookies you seemed to bake for him. “You made cookies? They smell so good, can we eat them now?”
Standing up, you hastily walked to the kitchen, grabbing away the pan of cookies before Midoriya could grab one. “No. They aren’t for you.” You placed the pan on the farther end on the kitchen counter, further symbolizing your statement.
Midoriya let out a small giggle, finding a bit of amusement in your bratty displays. Wrapping an arm around your waist, he pulled you into him before squeezing you into a tight hug from behind. “That’s okay, you look and smell much better than those cookies anyways.” He attempted to kiss you on the cheek, but you moved your head away with a click of the tongue. “Plus, you look so delicious in that apron. I never get to see you look so much like a little housewife.”
You forcefully pulled yourself away from Midoriya’s embrace before placing folded arms once again under your breasts. “Well I’m not a housewife. Or a wife, it seems.”
Finding your comment to hit a bit below the waist, he furrowed his eyebrows at you. “What’s that supposed to mean?” You huffed out a puff of air, standing there briefly before brushing past him out of the kitchen. “Y/N!” Ignoring his calls, you entered the bedroom and Midoriya heard the loud shut of the door.
Deciding to give you time to calm down, Midoriya let you be as he stripped down to hop in the shower. As the hot water beat down his back, he thought about how to best analyze his current dilemma with you. He was no stranger to your more rebellious attitudes, but it seemed today you were actually pissed at him. And he could admit that you had reason to be.
This was the first holiday that the two of you were to spend together since becoming engaged. You even baked cookies for him. Wearing an apron at that. Given the amount of work you had piled up yourself throughout the year, you never really had the time to show such cute displays of love. You were probably even excited to have a couple days to play a cute housewife for him, and to you, he probably ruined that by not being home for half the day.
But you needed to understand as well. That given his position in society he couldn’t just take days off no matter how special the occasion. It didn’t matter how much previous overtime he worked, or how many villains he’d catch. It didn’t matter how badly he wanted to be home with you. How badly he wanted to have you curled up in his arms, sitting by the fireplace while munching on cookies very much outside the both of yours’ diet. He wanted that just as much as you did, but what he wanted even more was to be a hero. To be your hero. And it’d take sacrifices from the both of you to continue to be that.
As Midoriya stepped out of the shower, he dried himself off with one of the fancy towels you must have recently decorated the bathroom with for the holidays. Chuckling to himself, he put on a pair of pajama pants and went to retrieve a bag that he left under his gear. As he opened the door to the master bedroom, he was met with your curled up back, the light of the phone screen illuminating your side profile.
“You know…it’s still just Christmas Eve, babe.” Midoriya approached the side of the bed, placing the small gift bag on the dresser. “We still have Christmas to spend with each other.”
Continuing to face away from him, you scrolled mindlessly on your phone. “Christmas Eve has the word ‘Christmas’ in it. So that makes it Christmas. Which means you missed Christmas, Izuku.”
“Don’t be like that, Y/N. You’re a hero yourself, so you know how demanding this life is.”
“I-…I know. I just- I just wore something so special today and it doesn’t even matter anymore.”
Wore?
“Doesn’t matter anymore? There’s still a couple hours of Christmas Eve, Y/N.” His words seemed to fall on deafened ears as you stayed silently scrolling on your phone. Sighing, Midoriya pulled out a long black box from the gift bag and held it in his hand. “So, you don’t want your Christmas present?”
His lips curled into a smile at how your head perked up from the mention of a gift. “I was going to wait until the Christmas that is tomorrow but since you’re so upset, I’ll give it to you tonight.” Despite a stern exterior, Midoriya truly thought you were like a puppy. So whiney and mean until you got the treat you felt like you earned. Well today was training day.
“You got me a gift, Izu?” You straightened up to sit on the edge of the bed, curious eyes falling from his shirtless physique to the long black box in his hand. The velvety material informed you that this was no ordinary gift. “What is it?”
“Something only fit for a princess.” Your lips started to match Midoriya’s curled ones as you jumped up and got closer to him. Your hand started to reach for the box before he held away from your reach.
“I said only fit for a princess.”
“I- I am a princess! C’mon let me see it~!”
“I don’t know, Y/N. You didn’t even share any cookies with me…”
“They’re your cookies! All of them! Lemme see, lemme see!”
Midoriya continued to keep the box from your reach, finding your switching between excitement and pouting to be cute. “You said you wore something special, right? And as beautiful as you look in those pajamas, I’m sure that’s not what you were referring to.”
You fiddled with the first button on your top, your facial expression becoming more flustered. “But…I’ve been wearing it for some hours now. I probably wore out that new feel to it…”
“Good. It probably matches your smell now.”
After hesitating for a brief period, you finally undid the first button, slowly continuing to undress yourself. Midoriya watched with a quiet gaze, still clutching onto the box in hand. After unbuttoning the top, you slipped off your pajama pants before sliding off the top, fully revealing your gift to him.
“Wow…” You were wearing a dark green lingerie, specially made in order to hug you in all the right areas. Midoriya could tell by the side cut-outs on your stomach that it was designed to mimic his hero-costume. The lacy garter and its belt accentuated your waist and thighs even more than they naturally did on their own.
But the perfect icing on the cookie was simply your face. The way that even the dim bedroom light seemed to make your e/c eyes glimmer in illumination. How your pouty lips formed the perfect bow. And best of all, how despite that pout, you still seemed to look innocent to him. Most days you looked more sexy or daring. But tonight, despite such erotic attire, to Midoriya you never looked more cute.
“Do you like it…?”
Midoriya put the box down on the vanity, meeting your reply with rough hands that massaged all around your body. The little whimpers that left your lips as he squeezed softly at your laced breasts sounded like carols in his ears. “You really are a princess,… princess.”
“T-That’s what I said. Can I have my gift now…my green-haired prince?”
Midoriya chuckled as he guided you by the waist to stand directly in front of the vanity’s mirror. He hands continued to roam and squeeze around your body as he looked at your reflection. “My princess can have whatever she wants. Just let me see all of you, baby.”
You slowly took the box in your hand, firstly inspecting the exterior. The velvet felt so soft in your hands, a savory compliment with the rough caresses from your fiancé. Carefully opening it, the shimmering of the contents greeted your eyes as Midoriya’s lips greeted the tenderness of your neck.
It was a headband. But not just any headband. An elegant one; fully decorated in the most precious of diamonds. You even recognized the rare diamond cut as being the same kind as the one adorning your ring finger currently. The shine of its beauty bouncing off the dim lamp’s light brought a tear to your eye.
“I figured since you’re my princess, you deserved the finest of crowns.” Midoriya’s hands slipped down your arms to cradle your hands that were clutching tightly on the velvet box. “Should I crown you?”
You silently nodded, wiping a stray tear that streamed down your cheek. Looking into the mirror, you saw your fiancé once again embellish you with diamonds. The bejeweled headband seated snuggly around your head, you couldn’t help but feel like you were truly wearing a crown. “It’s so beautiful, Izuku…” Your eyes shifted to Midoriya’s, who was looking at your reflection with the merriest of smiles.
He pressed a kiss to the back of your shoulder before looking back at you. “Only because you’re wearing it, princess.” His hands slid down to your waist, squeezing at your laced flesh. “I think it’s only right for you to do your princess duties now, Y/N.”
You shifted your head sideways to side-eye your fiancé quizzingly. “What do you mean? What duties?”
Midoriya kissed your neck once more as he slid one hand over your lacy garter, into your panties. He slowly rolled his fingers around your folds, pleased with how you were already a little wet for him. He could thank your materialism for that. “It’s only right for you to make an heir.”
“N-No way…”
“You don’t want children with me, Y/N?”
Midoriya’s question rang through your ear as his fingers slickly circled your clit. “You want children with me?”
You felt a puff of air hit your skin as Midoriya softly chuckled at your question. “Well…It’d be a lie to say I haven’t thought of filling you up with puppies. And tonight-“ Midoriya slipped a finger inside your pussy, curving it to graze right against your g-spot. “You looked so damn cute in that apron. If I were home to see you baking cookies in that, you’d already be plump with my future children.”
Midoriya slipped another finger inside, using the pad of his hand to continue stimulating your throbbed clit. “Izu~!” His other hand slithered up to your breast, squeezing and twisting at your nipple from outside its lacy barrier.
“Look at yourself, princess.” Your eyes that had drifted to the vanity’s surface aligned back at their reflection. The headband atop your head shimmered beautifully through the mirror. “Imagine how stretched out that garter will get when your tummy swells with my kid.”
A sinful moan escaped you, the thought of having Midoriya’s children starting to lustily plague your mind. As he continued playing with your sponge like an instrument, you felt your stomach bulge with an oncoming orgasm. “I-Izuku~ ! Gonna cum!” And right on queue it seemed, Midoriya had quickly slipped his fingers out of you, your whine sounding as beautiful as your crown.
“Not yet, Y/N. I researched that its better to cum closer to when a person’s semen is ejaculating inside the womb. It increases chances of impregnation.”
Catching your breath from your failed orgasm, you bent down so your face hovered over the vanity’s surface. With your back elegantly arched, your ass pressed against the hardness of Midoriya’s cock that stood proudly inside his pajama pants. Reaching your hand behind you, you slipped your fingers under the crotch of your panties, pulling them to the side. Your puffy lips looked so soft, and your drenched hole seemed to wait achingly for your fiancé to fill it. “T-Then ejaculate, you nerd~”.
Licking his lips, Midoriya freed his cock from his pants, giving it a couple jerks as he admired the view of your pussy. Noticing some of your juices were drooling onto the floor, he placed the head of his cock under you, collecting your leaking before rubbing along your folds. He teased you by poking the tip at your clit, relishing in your whine-filled moans that reverberated in his ears. “My princess is so fucking gorgeous.” He slipped the tip in, your entrance now hugging him tightly around the head. “Gonna look even more gorgeous with my child taking up all the room in that tummy.”
As he sunk his cock in, the stinging stretch of it made you impulsively tighten your walls even more around him. “Oh my god- Izuku~!” There was never a time where the thickness of Midoriya’s cock didn’t take you by a slightly painful surprise. When he was half-way in, he paused to check in after your thighs started to quiver. He noticed your lull in breathing as you held your breath in.
“Breathe, baby.” He reached his hand around your thigh to twiddle with your clit. “You need a little help? Don’t worry.” You nodded, succumbing to the onslaught of pleasure brought on by Midoriya’s fingers. “You always struggle to take my cock at first.” The sounds of your moans filled the bedroom as your stretched pussy relaxed around his cock. “But then you end up taking me- “. Feeling you grow slicker with each flick at your clit, Midoriya slowly sunk the entirety of his cock inside you. “-All the way to the hilt.”
His balls softly slapped against your clit and your walls twitched around him. With fingernails scratching against the surface, you looked behind you to meet his lustful green eyes. “You- You’re all the way in?”
He replied with a chuckle before bringing his hand toward your face, squishing your cheeks tenderly between his fingers. “That’s right. Look-“ Guiding your face to look back into the mirror, he started to gently thrust inside you. “Look at how well you’re taking me, baby. My cock fits so snug inside my princess.”
“Ohh shit~ Izuku-!” Midoriya’s increased his pace, his cock seeming to grow even more at how your silky pussy hugged around him. “You’re getting biggerrr~! Feels good!” You started to jerk your hips back to meet his thrusts, now balancing yourself on your forearms that rested on the vanity.
“Are you going to cum? Going to get your womb nice and ready for me?” Midoriya wrapped his scarred hands around the sides of your waist, squishing hard enough for your fat to plunge through his fingers. “Keep looking at your beautiful face in the mirror, Y/N. I want to see and hear you call my name when you cum.”
Midoriya pumped his cock vigilantly inside you while your pussy fluttered pleasingly around him. You looked at yourself in the mirror, in awe at how drunkenly you had become for him. The elegant band that was fit on your head was practically a juxtaposition against your lecherous facial expressions. Your mouth gaped open for delirious moans to pour out, while saliva drooled down your chin onto the vanity. Certainly no proper look for a princess you thought.
As the head of Midoriya’s cock plunged against your spongy sweet spot, your hands gripped at the edge of the vanity, desperate for stability. “Izukuuu…~”
“Go ahead, princess. Please cum for me.”
You tried to keep looking at your reflection but your eyes drifted to the back of your head as the pressure of your orgasm swelled inside your core. “I’m cumming~! Izuku! I’m cumming~!”
The feeling of your pussy convulsing around Midoriya’s cock made him grunt as he reached his own orgasm. His fingernails dug into your flesh, almost breaking skin while his thrusts became more jerky and erratic. “Fuck! Y/N- You feel so good-! Gonna cum inside you-!”
You felt the warm thickness of his cum filling you inside, his cock pulsating with every spurt. He slowly slid in and out of you as he calmed down and his grip around your waist softened. Regaining his breath, he slipped completely out of you, a bit of his cum dripping out as well. He slipped his hands under your chest to stand you up before gently gripping you behind the neck to pull you into a kiss.
The kiss was sloppy and wet as you were too in-the-clouds to pay attention where you moved your tongue. You simply whined as he sucked on the pink muscle, gripping on his bicep to maintain your balance. Midoriya lapped up the drool from your chin before licking at the inside of your mouth again.
Finally separating his lips from yours, he gave a squeeze to your ass before pushing you down on the bed. “Are you ready to be bred, princess?” He cradled his hands under your knees, pushing them up to be positioned by your breasts.
Your eyebrows furrowed, confused at his question. “B-But you just came. You came inside…”
He chuckled as he rubbed the tip of cock along your folds, gathering up the drooly mix of your juices and his seeped cum. “You didn’t think one time would be enough, did you? We have to make sure you get completely filled up, Y/N. Otherwise the chances of you getting pregnant won’t be so high.”
He sunk his cock inside of you again, the new mating-like position making it so his cock aimed directly against your now tender g-spot. The oversensitivity of it make you whine loudly as your hands reactively came up to press against his abs, attempting to slow him down. “Its-! Its too sensitive right now-! Wait a second~”
Midoriya shushed you as he took one of your hands in his, placing it beside your head as he intertwined his fingers with yours. “Ssshh…You’re not supposed to be bratty anymore, remember?” His balls pressed against your ass as he filled you once more all the way to the hilt. The tip of his cock hitting your cervix made a high-pitched moan leave your lips. “You took it so well before, so just do it one more time, okay?”
His hips grinded against yours as he took slow and deep thrusts inside your pussy. The feeling would have been sensual if it wasn’t for your current high levels of sensitivity. You could feel the head of his cock glide against each rib of your pussy’s walls before softly poking your cervix. The fingers that were entangled with your fiancé’s tightened with each thrust. “M-My cervix~ Too fucking big~”
Midoriya leaned down to press delicate kisses around your face, admiring how your moans were now sent directly into his ear. “I’ll be careful, okay? I can move how I want as long as I don’t hit it, right?” You nodded, a bit nervous at the foreshadowing question.
Midoriya straightened his torso, his hands finding their place back on your thighs as he put all nearly all his weight on you. Taking his cock almost entirely out of you, he quickly submerged it back inside, making sure to stop before he hit your wall. Although not reaching your cervix, he still made sure to properly grind against your g-spot, making your pussy even soppier than before.
His cock plummeting in and out of your pussy made squelching noises as the creamy mixture of your fluids spurt out on your thighs. Your hands wrapped around his forearms, fingernails scratching against the flesh. Your breathing became harsh pants as your tongue lolled out from between your lips. You feel yourself about to reach another orgasm and the throbbing of Midoriya’s cock told you he was at the same state.
“You-You’re gonna make me cum again~!”
“Me too, Princess. Are you going to take more of my cum?”
Nodding profusely, you focused on the growing bulge inside your stomach. “Y-Yeahh~!!” Bringing your hands up to his muscled shoulders, you looked euphorically into his green eyes. “Kiss me! Please~!”
Without any hesitation, Midoriya leaned down chest-to-chest, sloshing his tongue with yours. Saliva trailed down your cheeks as you mingled your fingers in his curly locks. His cock now hitting you in deeper places, your pleasure would override the kissing at your cervix. As you came around his cock, you felt once again the hot spills of Midoriya’s semen filling your womb. You moaned whinefully into his mouth as he continued to slowly thrust into you. The lubrication of his cum making his strokes slicker.
Ending the kiss, Midoriya wrapped his arms around your back, cupping your body into him as he started to pound into your pussy once more. The pleasurable feeling was too intense, making you barely able to think anymore. “F-Fuughh~!! Ijhuku!!”
“Just one more time, princess. Okay?” His thrusts now shallow and deep, you became lost in delirium as his cock relentlessly plundered into your pussy. “Wow, look- You’re feeling good even when I’m hitting your cervix, aren’t you? Taking me this deep- You’re going to be so full of my kids.”
“I-Ijhukuz babieess~!!”
“Heh~ If only we were still by the mirror, you could see how you look right now, all drunk from my cum.” He reached his thumb down circle at your clit, making your pussy clench around him in reaction. “Gosh, can you hear how mushy you are, princess? You’re so fucking soft inside. So perfect for me.”
“Guh-Guhmming~!!” Desperate to seek a break from the continuous pounding against your overstimulated sponge, you squirmed your hips around, pushing your hands against Midoriya’s shoulders in attempt to escape his grasp.
“Just hold still, okay? I’m- I’m almost there-“ Grunting behind gritted teeth, he wrapped his powerful arms around your head to further lock you in place.
“Haaahh~! Ijhuuu-!” Your thighs quaked intensively at Midoriya’s more rapid and deep thrusts as he chased his final orgasm. Pitchy and incoherent babbles filled his ears, further gratifying his desires. “Y-Yur cumm~ Sho full-! Sho full of- Ijhukuz cum~! Sho muchh~!”
“Oh fuck, princess. Your pussy and voice- Fuck! So cute-!” Midoriya’s pants became erratic and gaspy as his cock throbbed inside you. With a couple of longer and harsher strokes he finally released the last of his load inside your womb, a bit of it seeping out onto the bed from there not being much room for more.
Without slipping out of you, Midoriya straightened his back, smiling while he looked at your blissed-out face. He maneuvered your leg to the other side of his hip so that you’d be rested on your side. Laying down with his chest against your back, his hands caressed the area below your stomach, admiring how plump it became with his cum.
“I can’t wait to see how you beautiful you look in the next few months…” Peering at your side profile, he noticed you were deep in slumber. Pressing soft kisses to your shoulder, he gave a couple of gentle strokes, as if verifying that his cum was properly preserved inside you. Satisfied, he cradled his arm under your head, continuing to stroke your stomach lovingly as he closed his eyes.
“But we’ll have fun until then won’t we, princess?”

Masterlist
------------------------------------------------
Tiredness was your new default state. College alone was stressful and hard enough plus it didn't help that you had to do it online from your little NY appartement that you shared with three other roommates. But you had too. You were in your last semester ever! That was motivation enough to pull through.
Currently you were trying to facetime your boyfriend Charlie. You haven't seen him in about four months but if someone would ask your roommates, they would say it felt like an eternity of you moaning and pouting about not seeing him. When COVID started, the two of you seriously debated about moving in together. However, at that time, your classes were not online yet and you couldn't move away, he also couldn't move to New York with you because he still had meetings with the JATP Cast.
You stared at your ringing phone, desperate to hear his voice. You knew that he should be awake, you had the time zones imprinted on your brain.
Sorry babe, have a meeting in 5… Will call you after okay? <3 the message that just popped up on your screen made you frown a little. You weren't mad, you just had a really awful week and missed him like crazy.
Sure thing <3 yout texted back and threw the phone onto your bed. Deciding that instead of waiting for him to call back, you could use the time usefully and start studying for your next test in two days.
It was an hour later, you were completely engrossed in the textbook, so you barely heard the ringing of your phone. Maybe a bit too quick, you tossed all your books to the ground and launched yourself on the bed to find your phone.
His pretty face filled your screen “Heyyy!” “Hello beautiful!” You two grinned at each other.
“How are--” A knocking on your door interrupted your question. “Yes?” The door opened and revealed one of your roommates Alexis with a sheepish look on her face “I’m really sorry to interrupt but Tara just broke off with her boyfriend and she needs a hug.”
You looked up at your red haired friend “She broke up with Tom?!” Alexis nodded “It's an emergency” she claimed. Charlie understood this as his clue to end the call saying a quick goodbye and a don't worry about it, when you shot him an apologetic look.
This is how it went nearly every time. Something always came up, either you were studying non-stop and he didn't want to distract you or he had actor things and meetings going on. It was truly tiring. The last time you really had the opportunity to facetime was a couple weeks ago and even then you fell asleep inert 15minutes. When Charlie accidentally lulled you to sleep with a song he's been working on.
Still the two of you made it work. Charlie had started writing you weekly letters with his perfume on it. And you being your crafty self, sent him a little care package with letters, some self made food and paintings, every now and then.
You just finished all your tests and essays for this semester and you felt free again. Taking a deep breath, you opened your bedroom window and put your school books away. Sinking down on your bed, you closed your eyes temporarily, enjoying the moment. You got up again to get yourself something to eat and a coffee. Your roommates were currently away, probably getting groceries or books at the College Library.
You mindlessly scrolled through Instagram, the sandwich you made yourself still laying next to you on the nightstand. Ever since Julie and the Phantoms released, the cast's accounts blew up like crazy and Charlie always showed you off like a queen so of course people found your page as well. You didn't mind though. Most of the people were really nice and respecting, protecting your relationship from all the not so nice guys
You just answered some DM’s, chuckling at a meme that Maddie had sent you, when you got a notification that Owen was live. Naturally you clicked on it, knowing that Charlie most likely will be in the live as well, due to the fact that he was currently at Owen’s with Jeremy.
You were one of the first ones. Owen grinned when he saw your name come up in the chat.
“Guten Morgen everybody.” You chuckled when you heard your boyfriend singing in the background, writing in the chat that Owen should say hi to Charlie. “Are all of you streaming JATP?” he asked the live audience while you nodded to yourself, your laptop open beside you. It was a bit embarrassing to admit how often you saw the show, but every time you felt lonely you watched it. It had some really cute guys in it after all.
He read the chat “Do you like watching the show you participated in? Thats a good question. Charlie, Charlie! I have a question for you.” The camera turned and it showed the canadian boy you fell in love with.
“Eh…” he said as he walked into the kitchen, Owen following close. “It was very weird at first. Guess I'm more used to it now.” he answered honestly. You weren't even listening, you just stared at your phone in trance, the light making him look so incredibly pretty.
Suddenly you got an invitation to join the live from Owen. You sat up a bit straighter and blinked a few times before accepting.
“Helloooooo!” he screamed, making you laugh. “Hi Owen. Yall are up early.”
“Yeah… you know Char. That dumb early riser.” he complained. “Yeah I feel you. Though he lets me sleep so he must love me more than he loves you.” you teased making Owen pout in a childish way.
“Charlie! Who do you love more, me or y/n?” the statement made your boyfriend laugh and for a moment your breath hitched, it was music in your ears and once again you realised how much you missed it.
“I’m really sorry bud, but definitely y/n…I want to...” Charlie just wanted to explain why when he heard your chuckling from Owen’s phone. “See told ya.” It was truly a blessing that the camera was still turned to your boyfriend, making it easy for you to see his reaction. He nearly let the fork he was holding fall out of his hand, his eyes widening while his mouth grew into a big grin. “Is that y/n?” he asked cautiously. Apparently Owen nodded, because before you knew, the camera turned and you were face to face with your boyfriend.
“Baby!” he screamed, a wide, toothy smile on his lips. “How dare you go on live with Owen but not with me!” he jokes. “How was the history test? As hard as you thought it would be?” you cut off his rambling “Hi! Nice to see you too. No, it was way harder than I expected. Let's hope for the best, I get the results sometime next week”
“I bet you killed that test baby! No, Owen you don't get the phone back… I don't care that it's your live.” The chat was freaking out over Charlie's happiness by just seeing you, talking about how they want love like that.
“Little explanation for everybody. Me and Charlie haven't really been able to facetime so were just really excited right now. Sorry if it's boring.” you explained to the chat.
“Don’t ever say that ever again.” he said in a serious tone “it's not boring.” you held your hands up in surrender. “Sorry sorry. Can I talk to Owen again? I mean he is the one who invited me.” you teased, poking your tongue out. With a pout he gave the phone back to Owen.
“Are you also streaming the show today?” he asked you. Charlie was in the background, looking at you over Owens shoulder, making silly faces. “Of course! Who do you think I am? I’ve been watching it everyday since it came out.” Owens' face fell “You're kidding… that doesn't… that doesn't seem healthy.” you shrugged “Well i don't really care. I have this massive crush on someone from the show, just can't get enough of him.”
The camera shook and a couple crunts later you were once again faced with Charlie. “I sure hope it's me or you're not allowed to wear that shirt anymore.” he pointed to the shirt you were currently wearing and that was in fact one of his.
“Not gonna tell you babe. My mouth is shut.” you winked, making him blush. “I miss you.” he blurted out with puppy eyes. “I miss you too. Can’t wait to see you.” he grinned at that excited for the surprise he had planned.
“I think i'm gonna go, let you guys actually comment on the show. I love you Charlie.” You sent him a kiss and he pretended to catch it with his free hand.
“Eww that's so cheesy.” Owen muttered from somewhere in the back.
“I love you too.”

One of them solds themself to the devil, and one of them is the devil themself
Hello, anon! Sorry for taking so long. I only had time to work on it today. Well, uh, this is what my brain could offer right now. Idk if you’ll like it but it’s kinda inspired from the webtoon Devil No. 4. Thank you so much for sending a prompt! It’s helping me practice.
---------
Deal
Across the table, a man in a plain black suit was calmly drinking his luxurious black tea like he didn’t say the most absurd thing Hange has ever heard in her life.
“I’m here to apply for a barista job. I got my license last month.” She repeated what she already said 20 minutes ago when she got inside the coffee and tea shop.
The man clenched his jaw and drew a sharp intake of breath before placing his cup carefully on the saucer. “How many times am I repeating myself to you? I can give you more than that. Why not own and manage this shop?” He crossed his arms and leaned closer to the table. “As I said, I can give you anything, anything you want in this rotten world, Four-Eyes.”
Hange was unfazed with his low, tempting voice but she would have admit that seeing him closer made her think twice if what he has been saying was not true. His eyes were distracting her. She could feel the pain and wrath concealed from its depths although he’s just glaring. She shivered at the thought so she leaned back to her chair and mimicked his gesture.
“You just don’t want me in your shop, do you? Are you testing me? You’re scaring me that you’re a devil but it’s because you work your employees to death. Did I get it right? That’s okay with me. I just need to save up until I can finish my last year in college while having a roof over my head and food to eat every day.”
She sat up straight and entwined her hands below the table to gather strength and consciousness. Her head has been fuzzy since she went inside the still closed, elegant yet gloomy coffee and tea shop. She thinks it was because of her anxiety about not paying her bills due in a week.
I need to get this job or I’m screwed forever.
“I’m sorry, let me repeat my introduction. I am Hange Zoe, 22 years old. A graduating student of Molecular Biology from Paradis University. I’m currently doing my final research for my program but I’m very, very, very broke. I also need to find myself an apartment because the dormitory I live in is closing.”
Hange gulped as he started pouring tea on his cup again. She coughed to release the tension forming from her throat.
“I may have no job experience in this field of work but I assure you that I did well to get my barista license last month. I can prepare you coffee-”
The man raised a hand, indicating her to stop. “Tch.”
He stood up with his teacup in hand and turned his back to her. He was looking over the bustling city from the large glass window of his shop. The boss looked serene while basking in the morning light, but the outline of his tensed back muscles say otherwise.
They were silent for a while. Hange started nipping on the shortbread from the jar as she nervously waits on the man’s next words.
After a few more minutes of eerie quietness between them and the empty establishment, her mind began mapping out plans. Her next step in case the man won't hire her
“You’re hired.”
Maybe the pet shop would consider me back?
What about the shop where Dad used to buy his plants?
Which friend should I ask to stay with temporarily in case I get my ass kicked out of the dorm?
“Oi. I said you’re hired.” She was lost in her thoughts until her head was turned by a hand on top of it.
Determined pale blue eyes matched her blazing hazelnut orbs as she stared at him in awe. “Come again?”
He sighed. She felt cold air on her cheek. “I’m Levi. I grant wishes and it doesn’t come for free. You came here by choice. It’s fate that drove you to stick around. Once I hire you, you’ll be a devil’s pawn. You’ll be my master but your soul,”
Levi stood straight. Hange looked up at his face as she remains seated from her chair, unable to move her body against her will.
“Your soul will be mine to take whenever I desire to claim it.”
She felt her jaw is free for action. “Am I gonna die?”
“Sooner or later you will if we sign the contract.”
Levi is readying himself to cast his spell to erase the person’s memory. This is usually the moment that the situation sinks in into people’s greedy little minds. He may be a devil but he has his own ways to go around their soul quota. His performance has always been good. But he is no Erwin that lures all the preys he could get in one contract signing.
It’s been so long since he had a client this stupid and stubborn. Why won’t she just believe that he’s a devil and settle with all the riches he could give? It’s not like she’s in the position to say No. He doesn’t get her logic at all.
To his surprise though, her lips formed a gentle smile. Slowly, it turned into a snicker until she has lost it completely that her shoulders shook from laughing too hard.
“Ah, I’m sorry. I haven’t laughed that loud in ages. Phew!” She said while wiping the tears from her eyes. “I’ll take it. Tell me what I have to do.” She stood up at her full height and opened her arms.
He found himself lost for words. Hange is glowing in front of him, he almost thought that he was talking with an angel. No, maybe better than an angel. He’d attest to that. But still too stupid to be god.
“Aren’t you going to ask about the contract first?”
“No, I’ve had enough with the explanation. I can learn the other stuff along the way. I believe you. I have a meeting with my group mates in 30 minutes. I’m ready whenever you are.”
Cool air rushed from nowhere while they both share a look of agreement.
This became an easy deal, he thought.
At least I’d have funds for my research and my bills, that’s what matters now, she pondered.
“You have to close your eyes, mention my name three times, and say your wish.”
“Will it hurt?”
“No.”
“Will you leave me after this?”
Levi raised a brow. “No, stupid. Why are you stalling? I thought you’ve made up your mind. Just do it.”
She giggled at his sassiness. “Okay! Okay!”
Closing her eyes, she began saying her line. “You know what, I’ve been living on my own for five years now. I have friends, I love my professors. But this is the first time someone asked me if I’m sure of my decision and called me stupid.”
“Shitty Glasses.” He warned.
Chuckling, “And you’ve given me nicknames I haven’t heard before. So Levi, Levi... Levi.”
“Go on, Four-Eyes.”
“I wanna work in this coffee and tea shop, graduate from college, and until the end of my remaining time... Please, stay with me.”
Hange felt air gushing from Levi’s side. His hands went to her shoulders as her knees bumped to what seemed like his feet until she felt his body rise further. Is he floating?
Suddenly, Levi’s voice echoed from all corners of the place.
“Hange Zoe, I hear your plea and so I shall grant thy wish. I am Levi, your servant and the lord of your soul. Today, I declare you free from the suffering of the world.”
Tears flowed from her eyes because of the dizzying air that gushed after he spoke. Hange tried opening her eyes. Levi’s hand covered it as she felt a soft thing touched her lips. She almost pulled back, Levi whispered. “Stay in place. It’s almost done.” He brought back his lips to hers.
It took them five minutes to complete the contract, and yet it felt like it took them five years with how drained Hange became afterward.
A devil took her first kiss. How great.
Levi stepped on the break that made Hange go back to reality. Group meeting in 5 minutes.
She absentmindedly unbuckled the seatbelt and went out of the door.
“Four-Eyes. Shift starts at 7 PM tonight.”
She nodded. But before she closed the door, Levi added, “I’ll get your stuff from your dormitory. Live with me for now. Find an apartment when you saved up enough money.”
“W-why the hell? Isn’t it enough that you kissed me without saying that you have to kiss me for that damn ritual of yours?!”
“Don’t be whiny. You signed up for it. See you later, Hange.”
The door closed on its own, and he drove without letting her speak her mind. They have all the time in the world until she dies anyway. He’d have quiet while he can.
Levi opened his cellphone and sent Erwin a message. “Sold.”
His phone rang after but Levi didn’t expect that his easy deal would disappoint him immediately as the screeching voice from the other end boomed in the car.
“Servant, cook me dinner to compensate for the kiss.”

What I have to say: This is really not what I typically write, but please allow me my self-indulgence. Also, I am rusty and unpracticed, but this made me happy to write.
What this is: Yoongi has gone through twenty-seven phone numbers over the last ten years, and you haven’t changed yours since high school.
What this wants to be: Romance
What this warrants: Rated R for Rotten Relationships (and other things)
You hold your sister’s new baby reverently. The baby is so small, and you’re scared that your bad morals would somehow seep into the skin through contact diffusion.
“I feel like I’m already the irresponsible aunt,” you whisper, shooting your sister a terrified look. The baby isn’t even sleeping, but what if your bellowing voice would upset him. “Are you sure-”
“Yes,” she says firmly, “You’ll be a good godparent. There’s literally nothing to do except spoil your nephew every now and again.” She pauses, a thoughtful look crossing her face. “Unless we die. Then I guess you’d have to be more of a parental figure...”
You and your brother-in-law interject at the same time in a cacophony of protest.
“Okay, we are not dying,” he sighs as your octave increases by a half-step, “Please do not say that as I hold your offspring in my arms. I can’t feel them by the way. Seokjin, can you take him? I don’t want to drop him.”
Seokjin takes the baby, and you feel bereft of warmth. It’s a weird feeling to note that considering your firm No Babies Policy. You miss the baby already. This is witchcraft.
“It’s just a fucking hypothetical, relax,” your sister laughs, her eyes softening considerably as she sees Seokjin coo over his son.
“If our baby’s first word is ‘fuck’ I am not taking responsibility,” Seokjin says mildly, eyes never leaving his baby. You don’t really blame him.
“And you’re not blaming me either. I’ve been good,” you say.
“Oh please, everyone curses younger these days anyway. I’d rather my son know than not know, you know?”
“You’re pushing it,” Seokjin warns.
“You’re such a dad,” she scoffs.
“And you like it,” he counters.
“Yeah,” she admits. “Yeah, I do.”
You check your phone for the time, and it’s thirty minutes before the official start of the baby gathering. Time for you to leave.
“Hey, it was good to see you guys. And the baby,” you tell them, hugging both lightly so as not to disturb the tenderness of the moment. Bear hugs were for a different day. “I have to head out, but I’ll come visit a lot, okay? I’ll even babysit. For free.”
“Not staying for lunch?” your sister asks, looking very sad and disappointed, but you steel your heart. The two of you have inherited your mother’s knack of guilt-inducing looks, and you’re not about to fall for it.
“Not today, no.”
Seokjin nods, bidding you to take care. He knows why you want to leave before the crowd gets too heavy.
Unfortunately for you, cosmic luck was not on your side because as soon as the front door shuts behind you, the elevator dings and Yoongi steps out, clad head to toe in celebrity black and holding five Burberry shopping bags. There’s no one around, so you don’t particularly feel the need to stand on the niceties of greetings and choose instead to brush past him in favor of the elevator.
“And hello to you too.” he remarks sarcastically.
“Go to hell,” you reply, wishing that you didn’t have to be in a close fucking hallway because you could smell his cologne.
“Oh come on-”
You press on the close door button rapidly, and the doors shut out Yoongi with a soft, muted click.
Twelve hours later, you get a text from an unknown number. Coward is all it said. You stare at your phone screen in bed, seeing typing bubbles start and stop and start and stop. Mister Unknown Number finally settles on silence because nothing follows after the one-word epithet.
It feels like a dare.
--
Yoongi finally puts his phone down. You were too smart and too self-respecting to try this all over again with him, and he wants to kick himself for ever thinking that goading you would work when you were clearly over him-
His phone vibrates intensely and consistently. You’re calling him.
“Hello,” Yoongi says, picking up the phone after just a single ring. Desperate, to be sure, but he wasn’t positive you’d wait for five rings anyway.
“You changed your number again,” you say without preamble.
“I’ve actually had this number for two years now,” Yoongi says. “Been getting hacked less and less. Guess you never saved the number.”
“Why would I?” you ask, petulance peppering every syllable of your words.
“Why didn’t you stay for the luncheon?” he asks instead of answering your question.
“And sit in a room with you for a couple of hours pretending everything’s normal? No thanks,” you scoff. “And luncheon? Really?”
“You missed out on the shrimp toast.”
“I think I’ll live.”
“So why’d you call?”
You could take the easy way out. Save your pride and your face, and pretend that you still don’t carry a torch for Yoongi. You could lie and say you just wanted to call and make sure it really was him. But you were always a glutton for pain, and he was all too happy to oblige to your needs.
“You wanna come over?” you offer, not feeling an ounce of trepidation that he’d reject you. Yoongi always came when you asked.
“Where do you live?”
“It’s the same place as last time.” It’s a test. Let’s see if he even remembers my address-
“Be there in thirty.”
--
He’s late by a few minutes, but Yoongi explains through interrupted kisses and hasty undressing that there was traffic, and he showered-
“You could have showered here, you know,” you mutter, pawing at his dick and biting down on the juncture between his neck and shoulder. Yoongi always like a little pain.
“I’ll shower here after.” (After he fucked you at least twice, minimum. After he got to see you naked and temporarily his. After he was somewhat satisfied but much too sweaty for sleep.)
And then it’s No Talking Time for a short while because he has your face occupied with inhaling scant oxygen against the mattress while his own head was buried between your asscheeks and legs, lapping and sucking at you like he had something to prove. Could this count as some form of asphyxiation? Probably. You don’t expect his mouth to make you feel close to losing control. The act had always unnerved you, but you found yourself uncaring of past discomforts and losing yourself into the feeling of soft, insistent lips.
Yoongi eats you out with soft grunts, hands holding your thighs apart and firm. Don’t move, his hands say. His tongue up your cunt isn’t any sort of giving on Yoongi’s part; this was all selfish. He wants you to cum and feel starstruck and ruined, wants you to get it through your head that your flesh craved his flesh in the same animalistic way he needed you.
You turn your head around just enough to be able to get out, “You can sto-”
But he silences you with a warning slap on the ass. You are not to be deterred.
“Stop with the tongue,” you order.
“You’re insane,” he hisses, pulling away and shamelessly licking his lips. “You can’t ever just let me-”
“Put it in now,” you demand.
Yoongi lets out a terse sigh. “I should just leave right now,” he grumbles, getting up on his knees to rub his dick against you and nudges the head on your opening. “I shouldn’t be here.” He presses inside at “here” and wrenches a moan from your lips.
“Then leave,” you sigh, pressing your ass back against him, relishing in the feeling of being filled again by Yoongi. “Just go home and jerk off instead. That’s what you’re good at, right? Leaving me?”
“You’re a bitch for bringing that up during sex,” Yoongi says, fucking into you steadily and slowly, resisting the urge to pound into you like his baser instincts demanded. He was going to enjoy you for as long as he wanted. He knew you wanted it rough and bordering on violent, but he wasn’t going to add more ammo to your already large arsenal of Reasons To Hate Min Yoongi.
Yoongi leans over completely, letting his torso lay flush against your back, unbothered by your sweat as it mixed with his own. You were going to feel every last inch of him inside and out. He pumps in and out slowly, sucking on your neck and breathing into your hair with audible moans of enjoyment.
“I’m not leaving,” he groans, reaching over to rub your lower stomach gently, as if comforting you. The intimacy of this wasn’t lost on you, but you can’t find the words to tell him off. You missed his heat and the familiar weight. You are only human, after all.
Yoongi threads his fingers through your unkempt hair, stroking gently before balling his fists into a pronounced grip. He turns your head to the side and kisses you, your neck straining from the awkward, uncomfortable position. But it reminds you of the beginning - of the before times when things were easier in the shadows of his success and unavailability.
It’s impossible not to feel things when he fucks you this way, and kisses you, and moans soft nothings into your ear like you’re the only woman he’s ever done this with. You are atrocious at protecting your heart, and even after two years of icing him out, Yoongi barges into you like it’s nothing.
“Don’t stop,” you moan, heart thumping against your chest. You really, really can’t stand to want him so much.
“I won’t,” Yoongi reassures, kissing the corner of your eye. He doesn’t speed up, and instead chooses to test the limits of your patience with languorous but firm strokes. “Not until you tell me to.”
There was nothing that compared to this - not heated fucks with attractive strangers, or money, or getting crossfaded by the Han River. When Yoongi did this to you, you almost felt like he loved you.
--
Yoongi sleeps silently besides you in the sunlight, completely worn out after an emotionally exhausting round of sex that made him cry when he came inside you. He’s usually sensitive to the light, but he’s out cold and completely drained. You hadn’t expected that part - the crying. You thought it was just sweat until you heard rattling breaths and a hiccup.
You watch him breathe silently from your place in his arms, unwilling to leave the small cocoon of warmth. You’re the opposite of him, and right now, you’re wired. You’ll probably end up crashing sometime later in the day, but for right now, you’re content to just watch him sleep in your bed, on your pillows, smelling like your body wash.
You’re too old to be scared, and yet this moment fills you with dread; that once the spell of sex and yearning was broken, everything would tilt back to its regular axis, and you’d be all alone again. If you were younger, you might have up and left already. Leave him before he leaves you. And it’s not like you haven’t done that before. Your entire relationship with Yoongi is always filled with one person leaving behind the other one because nothing about the two of you ever lined up properly.
But this time, you’re too tired to run away. So you close your eyes and pretend to sleep until it finally comes to claim you.

chapter 5 part 2: all along there was some invisible string tying you to me
Anthony Bridgerton was an idiot.
He wasn’t just an idiot. You see, usually idiots are not aware of their idiocy. They live carefree and blissfully unaware of their idiocy.
Anthony knew he was being an idiot.
It was eating him alive.
He didn’t stop it, though. He didn’t know what else to do. He kept his distance from Kate as much as he could. It was the only thing he could think to do.
It was just so difficult.
He would screw it up. He would break them. It’s what he did. He screwed things up. He had nearly screwed things up with Daphne and Simon, he had screwed things up with Siena and he would screw things up with Kate.
Kate had been a constant in his life since he was nineteen years old.
Kate was his lifeline.
Anthony knew he shouldn’t put that all on her but he didn’t have a choice. There was nothing he could control when it came to Kate Sheffield. He had been completely hers since the moment they sat down in that lecture hall and she announced that he was wrong to their entire lecture.
Then proceeded to argue with him for the next thirty minutes.
He never stood a chance.
Kate deserved everything. She didn’t need someone who had an irrational fear of dropping dead from a bee sting and couldn’t manage a healthy relationship.
It’s not like he tried.
What was the point? They weren’t Kate.
Anthony needed time.
He needed time to figure it out. He could manage it. He had to get his head straight and learn to just erase his feelings and the constant pain. He had to learn to adapt and inevitably watch her be happy with someone else.
If they got too close, they would implode. The fine line between them had grown thinner and thinner and they were in the danger zone. They had been since their kiss.
It couldn’t happen again.
The thing about Kate was she still had that magic.
Kate believed in love. Kate wanted that struck by lightning, unconditional and inconceivable type of love. She deserved that type of love.
Kate deserved to feel the way Anthony felt every time he looked at her.
Anthony wasn’t a complete pessimist, he knew love existed. He had grown up watching his parents madly in love until his dad died. His mother had barely recovered from it. Anthony still hadn’t recovered from it. Violet Bridgerton still had bad days, days where she forgot to pick up Hyacinth or Gregory from school or lay in bed all day, barely moving. How could he do that to Kate? How could he let himself go through that?
That type of love wasn’t something he could give her.
That’s why he couldn't try with Kate. If there was a chance something could happen between them, he wouldn’t take it.
He wouldn't ruin that kind of love for her.
He would always love her, he would just have to let someone else do it.
He just had to figure out how to.
His only plan so far was avoiding her.
That plan was pretty flawed so far.
Anthony didn’t want to hurt Kate. He knew he was hurting her anyway, he didn’t miss her hurt expressions or uncharacteristic silences when he made an excuse that he had to go out for a while or that he would be late coming home. He was trying to fix things before something bad happened.
It’s just incredibly difficult to avoid the one person you spend all your time with and you happen to live with.
He wasn’t necessarily avoiding her, he was just distancing himself temporarily from her while he sorted things out. which is something he liked to convince himself of to try not feel like a complete and utter asshole.
He had even booked hotel rooms to try to get some sleep. How could he sleep when Kate was a few metres away from him? How could he concentrate on anything but Kate when she was close to him?
He needed to protect them.
He needed boundaries.
He also needed Kate.
“Anthony!” Hyacinth shouted cheerfully, grinning widely at her brother as she ran towards him from the school’s front door. Anthony had been leaning against the railing of the gate, waiting for Hyacinth and Gregory to finish school.
His afternoon meetings had been cancelled so he called their nanny, Pippa and told her to take the rest of the day off. His mother had been down at Aubrey Hall for the week with builders planning some reconstruction and she was due back this evening. She hadn’t said anything yet but he suspected it had something to do with preparations for Daphne’s wedding. Anthony wanted to see his siblings and he needed a distraction from the million thoughts running through his head.
“Hi titch,” Anthony said, grinning back at her as he leaned down and picked her up, resting her on his hip. She was too old at seven to be carried around, but he didn’t really care. He needed Hyacinth to stay little for as long as possible. “How was school? Have you seen Greg?”
“It was fun,” She murmured, resting her cheek on his shoulder and letting out a small yawn. “We had to draw our favourite animal, so I obviously drew Newton.”
Anthony couldn’t stop the smirk breaking out on his face. “Obviously. Can I see?”
Hyacinth nodded slowly, wiggling out of his arms so she could open up her Jurassic Park backpack. She pulled out a piece of paper with her drawing, which had a crayon version of what Anthony guessed was Hyacinth, Gregory, Kate, Anthony and the ginger blob in the middle that was Newton.
Something inside of Anthony’s chest clenched.
“Be careful,” Hyacinth scolded, prying the paper out of Anthony’s hands. “I’m going to give it to Kate.”
Anthony bent down to Hyacinth’s eye level, smiling at her as he held open her back and put the picture back inside. “Kate will love it.”
Kate would love it. She was so incredible with Hyacinth and Gregory and they adored her. Kate kept everything they had given her over the years, it had been pinned up on Anthony’s fridge along with the drawings and pictures he’d received from them since Kate had moved in.
They also adored her demon corgi, who had taken over Anthony’s flat for weeks. The little shit climbed into his bed every single night and he knew Anthony wouldn’t kick him out. He had given up a long time ago.
He also started walking him whenever Kate couldn’t, she usually brought him in the evenings and Anthony in the morning when he went for his daily jog.
It made Kate insanely happy when he did it, so obviously Anthony was going to do it.
He had quickly snapped a sly picture when Hyacinth wasn’t looking, he had to send it to Kate. There was no harm in it. Right?
It was just a picture.
Anthony: [sent an image]
Anthony: Your demon inspired Hyacinth’s picture for animal day. She’s excited to show you this later.
Kate: omg. I want to cry that is so bloody cute. Can’t wait to pin it up on the fridge. You look like you’ve put on a few pounds though x
Kate: please do not talk about your godson like that
Anthony: Please, I’m still the best looking guy you’ll ever know.
Kate: sorry, it’s spelled p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c*
Anthony: Sorry, it’s spelled I-am-letting-you-live-in-my-flat*
Kate: My presence is a gift.
Anthony: Also-We’re not getting into this again. I have no familial relation to Newton.
Kate: He has your middle name!
Anthony: Dogs don’t have middle names!
Kate: Do you want to see his birth certificate?
Anthony: Do you mean the certificate you made yourself and framed on your wall? Unfortunately, I’ve seen it more than once. That’s enough for a lifetime.
Kate: [sent an image]
Anthony: Your middle finger is a bit wonky.
Kate: [sent an image]
Anthony: I hope your boss saw you take that.
Anthony chuckled under his breath as he looked up from his phone, spotting Gregory talking to a few of his friends across the playground before waving at Anthony, jogging towards them. He glanced back at the text chain, internally cursing at himself. Why did he always have to flirt with her? He couldn’t help it.
“Hey mate!” Anthony grinned as Gregory reached them, wearing his football kit. They were heading straight to Gregory’s football training in a nearby park, where Anthony and Hyacinth would go for a walk and wait for training to finish. Anthony ruffled his hair, taking his bag and sports bag. “Good day?”
“Hey!” Gregory said, grunting at Hyacinth before beaming up at Anthony. Anthony knew it wouldn’t last forever but he’d pay every cent he had to keep Greg looking at him like he was his hero. “Are you coming to watch me play football?”
“Of course I am,” Anthony said, nudging at Hyacinth to start walking towards the car. “I can’t wait. Are you excited? Come on, we better get going.”
“Anthony! Hello!” A blonde woman Anthony had definitely seen before was standing around a group of women, with their kids running around them and screaming. She practically pushed another woman out of the way to get to him. “How are you?”
He couldn’t for the life of him remember who she was. “Hello,” He said lamely, glancing at Gregory and Hyacinth who looked bored and were absolutely no help. “I’m great, thank you. How are you? Nice to see you again. I’m sorry, we’re just in a bit of a rush.”
It was slightly rude of him but once one of these parents cornered you, you’d be stuck there for hours. He wasn’t going to get stuck talking about a bake sale for the next half an hour.
“I’m lovely thank you-Oh! Yes, of course. You’re such a good brother. Have a good day!” The blonde woman called after Anthony as he hastily nudged Hyacinth and Gregory along. “If you need any help or are interested in the bake sale next week, I can give you my number-”
“Get in,” Anthony practically hissed urgently, waving his hand in the direction of the women but quickly flicking open his boot and car.
“One of them is Sasha’s mum,” Hyacinth grumbled, glancing back at the herd of women whose eyes had followed them towards Anthony’s car. “They think you’re good looking.”
Anthony threw their bags in the boot and opened the back door, winking at Hyacinth as she climbed into the car. “Well, they’re not wrong.”
Anthony laughed as Hyacinth and Gregory both made disgusted faces.
Gregory frowned at his passenger side. “I’m too old for a car seat.”
Anthony rolled his eyes. “The law would argue otherwise. In.”
Gregory took one look at his brother’s face and didn’t argue, grumbling as he moved into the car seat. Anthony checked their seatbelts and once everything was set, he climbed in himself and drove off to the park.
“When are you and Kate getting married?”
“What?” Anthony’s eyes snapped towards the rearview mirror, widening as he looked at Hyacinth.
Hyacinth didn’t seem phased whatsoever by her question. “When are you and Kate getting married?”
“We’re not,” Anthony said with a steady voice, glancing towards Greg who was too consumed with his Nintendo to care about the conversation. Is that what they both taught? “Why would you ask that?”
Hyacinth shrugged. “Daph and Simon are getting married.”
“That’s because they’re engaged.”
“Oh,” Hyacinth said slowly, her eyebrows furrowing slightly as she processed the conversation. “Why aren’t you and Kate engaged?”
“Kate and I are friends,” Anthony explained, feeling the dampness of his palms against the steering wheel. “We’re not like Daphne and Simon.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Anthony said, a slight edge of irritation in his voice as he focused back on the road. He didn’t need to be mean, Hyacinth didn’t understand what she was talking about. “Why are you asking so many questions?”
“Well, people in love get married right?”
“Yes.”
“Daphne and Simon love each other?”
“They do.”
“Did Mum and Dad love each other?”
Anthony felt himself soften. “Very much.”
“Don’t you love Kate?”
“I do,” Anthony said hesitantly because he did in the exact way Hyacinth was asking but he didn’t really feel like getting into that. “People can love each other and not get married. It’s different for Kate and I-”
“No it’s not,” Hyacinth interrupted, a finality to the tone of her voice. It was the tone she used before she had a complete fit or meltdown. “I better be a flower girl.”
Anthony knew he was fighting a losing battle, and the irony of that statement wasn’t lost on him in relation to his current predicament. “At our non-existent wedding? Of course you can.”
Hyacinth stuck his tongue out at her and it reminded him so much of Kate, he nearly laughed out of relief and pain.
There it was again.
Kate.
Kate was constantly on his mind.
This was the problem. It was hit fault. This wasn’t the first time a family member, well, not just his family-anyone-had suggested there was something going on between him and Kate. They weren’t just friends. Kate was his best friend, she was everything but she had always been something a little bit more.
He had found her eight years ago and he didn’t know what to do.
Now, it felt like it was too late.
What the hell was he going to do?
Anthony couldn’t get Kate’s hurt look out of his head as he charged out of the house. It even momentarily distracted him from the blind fury he was feeling while he drove to the police station.
Benedict and Simon were right behind him, Benedict climbing into the front and Simon into the back. Anthony put the car in gear, speeding out of the driveway. The police station Colin was detained in wasn’t far and Anthony had already sorted out everything.
“Why did you do that?” Benedict asked, breaking the silent and tense atmosphere in the car as Anthony danced along the speeding limit, his foot pressing onto the accelerator to get to Colin.
He was relieved his brother was okay because Anthony was going to kill him himself.
“What?”
“Why didn’t you let Kate come? Over Simon?” Benedict asked, staring flatly at Anthony. “No offence Simon.”
Simon shook his head, pursing his lips. “None taken. I’m happy-well, not happy-happy to help.”
“I didn’t let Kate do anything.” Anthony said, in complete disbelief Benedict was bringing this up. There was a reason he didn’t let Kate come, he was trying to distance her from all of his shit. She didn’t need to be involved in this.
“Oh right,” Benedict said, sarcasm dripping in his tone which pissed off Anthony even further. “That makes sense. As if Kate isn’t involved in everything to do with you and our family. Kate is a part of our family. Why haven’t you done something about it?”
“She doesn’t need to be involved in this.” What the hell was Benedict doing? Why did it feel like everyone was against him? Anthony was trying, he was bloody trying and everything still went to complete shit.
Benedict didn’t buy a word of it. “Are you ever going to tell her?”
“Don’t start this shit tonight Ben,” Anthony said, his tense voice a warning, not a request. “Our brother is in jail.”
“I’m just saying-”
“I didn’t ask,” Anthony interrupted swiftly, his grip on the wheel tightening significantly. He could practically feel the vein in his forehead bulging. “Drop it.”
Anthony could see Benedict glance back at Simon, making some sort of gesture but Simon just shrugged, shaking his head.
Smart move, Hastings.
“Let’s go,” Anthony said once they arrived at the station, getting out of the car and walking into the empty police station. He paid Colin’s bail, filling out a form as he waited for an officer to bring Colin out.
Colin eventually appeared, looking worse for wear. He didn’t look in any way hurt, which made Anthony relax slightly. The blue shirt he was wearing was rumpled and the mop of brown hair on the top of his head was sticking up in various directions, but he was okay.
“Anthony-”
“Not a fucking word,” Anthony snapped, his voice deadly low as he looked at Colin who shut his mouth quickly. “Follow Ben to the car. Now.”
Benedict lightly squeezed Colin on the shoulder as Colin walked towards him, opening and closing his mouth before deciding to do what Anthony said.
Anthony had to take a few deep breaths before he walked out towards the car. He needed to keep his cool. Whatever happened, Colin was his brother and it didn’t need to result in a huge argument. As long as Colin took responsibility for his actions, it would be relatively okay.
Colin was twenty-two years old and still acting like a complete child. He traveled whenever he wasn’t at university and didn’t show any responsibility when it came to their family and his own life. Anthony was trying to not get too involved, getting Colin to even go to university had taken ten years off his life but sometimes Colin really tested his patience.
Anthony’s cool temperament lasted about twenty seconds once he got into the car.
“It wasn’t my fault.”
Anthony snorted while Benedict sighed deeply. “It never is, is it Colin?” “I was drunk,” Colin said, slumping in his seat like Gregory did when he was annoyed about something. “Marina dumped me. I met up with my mates and got drunk. It was a mistake. How was I supposed to know you’re not meant to piss on statues?”
Anthony hesitated for a moment, glancing back at his brother’s face. Colin was in pain. He had really liked Marina, the whirlwind he had met while skiing in France over Christmas. Anthony had never seen his brother fall so hard. “I’m sorry about Marina, Colin. I am. That’s not an excuse to act like a complete and utter idiot and break the law.”
“It was an accident!” Colin snapped back, his voice rising in line with Anthony's. “What do you want me to do, Ant?”
“I just bailed you out of jail,” Anthony snapped, the anger he had been holding in finally coming out. He was racing home within the speed limit, the confinement of the car making him claustrophobic. “I made sure that that stayed off your permanent record so you didn’t get thrown out of university or asked about in job interviews. Instead of acting like a spoiled little brat you could be a little more grateful and shut up.”
“I didn’t ask you to do that.”
“You’re right,” Anthony snapped, really focusing on not losing his head. “Yet I did it anyway.”
“I’m so fucking sorry I’m not perfect like you, Anthony,” Colin said, his voice full of venom as Anthony pulled up into the driveway. “That I’m not perfect like Ben, Daph, El, Franny or fuck it, Dad! I’m so sorry I don’t live up to your perfect expectations.”
“Oh shut up Colin,” Anthony snapped, his voice just as angry as Colin's. “You fucked up. I’m not interested in listening to your sob story to make yourself into a victim. Take some responsibility for once in your life.”
Anthony felt the guilt flood his body as he spoke to his brother. He knew he would be ashamed of himself later, he already was as the words sunk in. He was just so angry. Colin never took responsibility for anything and this was just another time he had gone too far and expected no consequences and Anthony to pick up the pieces.
“Fine,” Colin said, shaking his head as he flung the door open. “Here’s some responsibility for you. I’m dropping out of university.”
Then he slammed Anthony’s car door shut and all hell broke loose.
Anthony didn’t have anything left to say.
His fight with Colin, every insult and dagger he had thrown at him, circled around in his head and rang in his ears. He couldn’t find the words to speak as Kate drove them home. He wanted to say something, to put Kate at ease as she anxiously glanced at him the entire way home.
He just didn’t have anything left in him.
Colin’s words were on repeat in his head like a broken record.
“I don’t need to try to be a carbon copy of Dad to figure out my life. I’m not you, Anthony. Desperately trying to be someone he’ll never be.”
Colin was right.
Anthony sat down on the couch in his flat, his limbs heavy and deflated as the reality of his brother’s words hit him like a tonne of bricks.
He then did something that he hadn’t done since the day his father died, in his mother’s bedroom, away from his family.
He cried.
The sobs hit him like a wave and moved throughout his body, flooding out of him and everything he had been holding in for years. He cried for his dad, who he missed so much it killed him a little bit inside every single day. He cried for the man he desperately was trying to be but knew he never would. He cried for his family who had a gaping hole in it he could never fill. He cried for his family, who he tried so hard for but somehow always managed to fuck it up.
Anthony cried for everything that he had lost, everything that he was selfish enough to be angry about. Everyone he didn’t go, everything he didn’t do and everyone he didn’t meet because he had to step up.
He cried for Kate, the person who made him feel like he was worth something and that he was doing something right sometimes. He could never allow himself to let her know how he felt. He couldn’t do that to her.
Kate held him against her chest, her head resting on top of his as she moved her hand up and down his back, murmuring soothing words as he cried until nothing else could come out.
Anthony was surprised when Colin showed up at his flat the next morning. Kate had made him a cup of tea before putting Newton on his lead, throwing one final glare at Colin and a reassuring smile at Anthony before leaving their flat.
His flat.
His flat.
It was incredibly awkward, as both the Bridgerton men sat on Anthony’s couch in complete silence. Colin was tapping his foot against the ground, looking up at Anthony and back at the floor as his mouth opened and closed as he decided what to say.
“I’ve always liked Kate.”
That took Anthony by surprise. “Who wouldn’t?”
“For a second there,” Colin said, a half chuckle coming out of his mouth that was muffled by his pained expression. “I didn’t think she’d let me in.”
“As someone who has been on the wrong side of Kate many times,” Anthony said, smiling slightly as leaned back into the couch. “I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“She’s terrifying.”
“Absolutely petrifying,” Anthony said, nodding in agreement. “Don’t tell her I said that.”
“Do you hate me?”
Anthony’s head snapped up, the strange lightness of their conversation fading completely. “Of course I don’t hate you.”
“I’d hate me.”
Despite everything that had happened, Anthony was reminded of who was sitting right in front of him. Colin was so like their dad it hurt Anthony sometimes. He was fun, happy, irrational, spontaneous and he cared so passionately about the people in his life. He was also young and still trying to figure things out. He made mistakes. He had his heartbroken. He was just trying.
They were all just trying.
“I love you, Colin,” Anthony said firmly, because it was true and there wasn’t anything his brother could say to ever make Anthony think or feel otherwise. “There’s nothing that could ever happen to make me not love you. Okay? I only want what is best for you. I know how unreasonable I can be sometimes. Maybe I was wrong for thinking what was best for me is what is best for you. I just want you to be okay if something ever happened to me.”
Colin visibly gulped. “Nothing is going to happen to you, Ant. I’ll never be more sorry for what I said about Dad. I didn’t mean it. I am a horrible person for saying that to you. I’ll never forgive myself for it. I do mean this, though. You’re not Dad, Ant. You’re you. You don’t need to be Dad. You don’t need to be anyone else but you. Everyone needs you to be you. We all have gotten this far because you’re you, Ant. Not Dad. Not anyone. You.”
Anthony was absolutely speechless as he listened to Colin. Colin and him had clashed over the years but they were so alike in so many ways.
“I know I haven’t always made things easy on you. I think about him a lot. If he would be proud of me. I don’t think he would.”
“Of course he would,” Anthony said firmly, finally finding his voice. “There’s so much to be proud of. You’re a fantastic person, Colin. You annoy the shit out of me sometimes but you’re an incredible person.”
“I want you to be proud of me.” Colin’s voice was shaky as he spoke, the emotion of the situation finally coming to the surface.
“Colin,” Anthony said seriously, looking at his brother. “There’s no world where I’m not proud of you. You shouldn’t worry about what I think-”
“Anthony,” Colin said seriously, looking his brother in the eye for the first time that morning. “All I think about is what you think. You’re the voice inside of my head. Even if you sometimes annoy the shit out of me, I need you there. I know we all wouldn’t be okay if it wasn’t for you. I’m so sorry I haven’t shown you how much I appreciate that. I’m so sorry. I’ll never be more sorry for that.”
The large lump in Anthony’s throat was becoming extremely painful. “You don’t need to apologize-”
“I do and I am,” Colin said, standing up and moving towards Anthony. “I love you. You’re the type of person all of us can only hope we can be. You’re my big brother. I’m going to hug you now. It’s going to be awkward but I feel like it’s necessary.”
They wrapped their arms around each other, slapping each other’s backs and holding onto each other tightly.
They eventually pulled back, both turning their heads slightly to compose themselves and wipe their eyes with the back of their sleeves.
“That’s enough emotion for a lifetime,” Colin murmured, moving back to his original seat and letting out a sigh. “Beer?”
“Beer.”
Of all the places Anthony Bridgerton imagined himself to be at this point in his life, it wasn’t at his sisters and best friend’s engagement party.
Simon had surprised Anthony by showing up to his flat after him and Colin had sorted things out. Simon had kept a respectful distance since Anthony had found out about Daphne and him, not pushing Anthony into anything and forcing their friendship back to the place it was.
Instead, something else had happened. They were in a new place. They were starting off a clean slate. They were back to hanging out, playing golf, grabbing dinner and drinks. Anthony was his best man. He didn’t want to hold grudges anymore. He wanted his best friend back.
The past week had surprisingly been great. He had decided to put everything on hold with Kate and he had spent an unbelievable amount of time with her this week, going against every part of his initial plan. The only bad part of his week was moving Kate into her new flat. The flat felt so empty and lifeless without her.
He even missed Newton, which is something he’d keep to himself until his deathbed.
Simon joined him at the bar, smacking his back. “Good speech, mate.”
“Mm,” Anthony said, giving him a sarcastic grin as he finished off his whiskey. “I’m happy you enjoyed it.”
“It really came from the heart.”
“Let’s not get soppy,” Anthony said, nodding in thanks to the bartender as he topped up his whiskey glass. “I have just decided I can tolerate you again.”
“Please, I was your favourite person until Miss Kate Sheffield came along,” Simon teased, grinning at Anthony’s side-eye. “Not that I blame you. She’s really something.”
“Back to that speech though,” Simon said, his back to the bar as he surveyed the buzzing dance floor. “I don’t think it was us you were entirely talking about.”
Kate.
Anthony’s heart stopped in his chest. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t,” Simon said, downing the rest of the contents of his glass with a gleeful smirk. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to go dance with my fiance.”
Bastard.
His family really needed to learn to mind their own bloody business.
“Anthony.”
Anthony’s vision was fuzzy. He could hear a light buzzing in his ear. Kate’s words were still playing in his ears.
“Forget me. I don’t want to speak to you ever again.”
He couldn’t let this happen. He wouldn’t let this happen. He had tried so hard to protect them and it only ended with him fucking everything up so royally.
He felt like he wasn’t in control of his body, his eyes were stinging and his limbs were moving out of his own accord. He was bustling through the crowd, trying to find Kate who had disappeared into it.
“Anthony!”
Anthony barely heard his own name until someone grabbed his arm. Francesca.
“Did you know Michael was here?”
Anthony was still moving across the room, Francesca still beside him. “What?”
“Can you believe it?” Francesca said, her bottom lip sticking out as she shook her head in disbelief. More emotions were running across Francesca’s face than Anthony had ever seen in his life. “Ben invited him. John didn’t even know! Apparently he’s Ben's new protégé.”
“Fran, can you hold on a second?” Anthony said, shaking his head and running his hands through his hair, pulling at it. “I’m sorry. I-I need to find Kate. I have to find Kate.”
“Anthony,” Francesca said, her face flooding with concern as she steadied Anthony’s balance with her two hands on his arms. “What is going on? What happened?”
“Anthony.” Benedict had arrived, with Sophie beside him, an anxious look across his face.
“Piss off Ben,” Francesca snapped, her anger at her brother not fading in the slightest as she turned back to Anthony. “Anthony? What happened?”
“He’s asked to intern with me this summer! What was I meant to say Fran? I didn’t realize there was something going on between you-“
“There is nothing going on between us! I’m with John!” Francesca hissed, her anger momentarily shocking the two Bridgertons and Sophie. Francesca had always been calm, cool and collected. That wasn’t what was happening tonight. “I don’t need any relationship advice from someone who snuck around for over a year. Get off your pedestal.”
“It seems like Benedict can’t keep his nose out of anything.” Anthony spat out his brother’s name and didn’t care for Ben’s slight flinch. He needed someone else to blame.
He needed to find Kate.
“Someone had to do something!” Sophie snapped, her eyes completely on Anthony. “We’ve all watched this go on for years and it’s exhausting. Where’s Kate, Anthony?”
“What happened with Kate?” Francesca asked again, her eyes solely on Anthony.
“I was going to find her-“ Anthony said helplessly, his chest tightening which was making it hard to breathe. He had messed it up phenomenally. She was never going to forgive him. “It’s bad. We had a fight. A bad one.”
The meaning of his words seemed to translate as Sophie’s eyes widened, her mouth dropping open slightly as she hastily turned to look around the room.
“I think you’ve done enough.” Sophie snapped, Anthony, Francesca and Benedict’s eyes were wide as they watched Sophie storm away in search of Kate.
“Ant-“
“It’s fine, Ben. I’m sorry I ruined your night. I have to go,” Anthony said, “This is my mess. I’ll fix it.”
“You don’t have to fix it alone.”
“I have to fix it with Kate.” Anthony said, charging through the rest of the crowd and searching everywhere for Kate. Benedict, Colin and Francesca were on his tail, trying to convince him to come inside and sit down and talk to them. He couldn’t. He tried her phone a million times that night but she didn’t pick up. He had to fix this.
Eventually, it was confirmed by Sophie that Kate had left the gallery. She had refused to let Sophie into her flat and that was as much as Anthony was told.
Kate was gone.
Anthony woke up with an excruciating headache and aching limbs. He grumbled as he sat up, feeling a hard exterior under him. He was sleeping in his old childhood bed.
The last time he had slept in this bed was the day before he had left university. The day before he met Kate and his life changed forever. He hated saying it, but it was true. His life had completely changed the minute he met and argued with Kate Sheffield and now-
Now he could have lost her forever.
“You’re up.”
Anthony jumped slightly as he saw Benedict and Colin standing at the foot of his bed, “Were you two watching me sleep? That’s creepy.”
“We were making sure you didn’t choke on your own vomit,” Benedict said carefully, a stern expression on his face but he cowered slightly as Anthony looked at him. Benedict had certainly meddled last night. “You drank a lot after Kate left.” “I’d be impressed with how much you drank if it wasn’t because of such tragic circumstances,” Colin joked, failing to lighten the mood with a joke. “I made you some coffee.”
“Thanks.” Anthony said sourly, nodding at Colin but not appreciating the reminder of what a terrible person Anthony was. Kate had gone and he couldn’t cope, so he drank until he passed out.
Why did he open his stupid mouth and tell her about the kiss? Why didn’t he tell her he loved her back? Why did he try to explain to her why they would never work? It was the everything he had been telling himself again and again and when he had said the words out last night, they were meaningless and stupid. The only thing they had achieved was destroying them both.
What was wrong with him?
He couldn’t get the look of anguish on her face out of his head.
He had done the one thing he had sworn he would never do.
He had hurt her.
“I’m sorry about the gallery, Ben.” Anthony said, shaking his head in shame.
“I’m not,” Benedict said, shrugging as he leaned against the wall. “We sold all of my pieces. I knew what I was doing when I put that piece up there. I’m sorry, Anthony. I really am. I never wanted it to cause all this.”
“You didn’t cause any of this,” Anthony said, shaking his head and letting out a deep sigh. “I did.”
“No, he definitely caused this,” Colin said, completely ignoring Benedict’s glare. “That was a dick move. Ant and Kate were always going to come to blows and have it out but you just threw the toaster into the bathtub with that stunt.”
“Anthony got involved with my love life!” Benedict exclaimed, turning around to glare at his younger brother. “I wanted to help-”
“That’s because Ant is relatively okay at sorting out everyone else’s love life and is absolutely shocking at sorting out his own,” Colin said, shooting Anthony a cheeky grin who just glared back. “Tell us what happened.”
“I was furious about the picture.” Anthony said slowly, not wanting to relive the events of last night ever again. He would have to, everytime he told this story and when he saw Kate again. If he saw her again. She had never responded to any of his calls or messages last night and he hadn’t tried again this morning.
He didn’t want to hurt her further by harassing her.
Anthony needed to see her and speak to her.
“I was acting really unfairly. We started arguing. I said some things. Kate said some things. I said something really stupid,” Anthony said, letting out a deep breath before he continued. “Kate told me she was in love with me. I didn’t say it back. I told her I remembered that kiss I had pretended to forget on my birthday last year. She told me she never wanted to speak to me again.”
“That,” Colin was the first one to speak, “That is a lot worse than I imagined.”
“Helpful Colin,” Benedict said dryly, sitting down on the bed beside Anthony and patting his shoulder. “You messed up. Yes. Kate is hurt. She’ll forgive you. You’re Kate and Anthony. You can fix this.”
“I don’t know, Ben. I’ve never seen that look on her face before. She won’t speak to me,” Anthony said, falling back onto the bed and feeling utterly hopeless. “She’s never going to forgive me. I don’t know what to say.”
Benedict bit his lip, nodding his head. “Ant, you’ve never been able to talk to us the way you’ve been able to talk to Kate.”
“The one person you can talk to won’t talk to you.” Colin said slowly, as if he was putting something together in his head.
Anthony and Benedict both turned towards Colin and raised an eyebrow.
Colin’s face lit up, as if he had just won the lottery. He grinned widely at his two brothers, who looked at him suspiciously. “I have an idea.”
Colin’s brilliant idea was therapy.
Apparently, Colin had a heart to heart with Penelope Fetherington the morning after their argument. Penelope and Eloise were studying together for the day at their house and Eloise had left Penelope in the kitchen with Colin whilst she went off for a shower.
Eloise had not been talking to Colin after the argument, which led to his and Penelope’s strange but heartfelt conversation.
Penelope recommended Colin go to therapy.
That’s how Anthony ended up taking Colin’s therapy appointment at 10am that Saturday morning.
“Why are you here today, Anthony?”
Anthony hadn’t been to therapy since university. It wasn’t for this reason. He had been stressed, having bad panic attacks and feeling overwhelmed by everything. He was back again, for similar but different reasons.
“My brothers thought it would be good if I spoke to someone.” Anthony answered honestly, not feeling entirely comfortable to open up to a complete stranger whose office he had walked into two minutes ago.
“Do you think you need to be here?” His therapist asked, scribbling something down in her notebook.
“I suppose so. No. Yes, I do. I do think so,” Anthony said, scrambling over his words before he sat up straighter in his seat. “I do. It’s what Kate would tell me to do.”
“Who is Kate?”
“Kate is my best friend,” Anthony said instinctively, the meaning of the words hitting him a few seconds later. “Well.”
“Well?”
“It’s complicated.”
His therapist looked straight at him, giving him a friendly but stern smile. “I’m trained in complicated.”
“We’re not currently speaking,” Anthony said slowly, deciding to just let it all out. This is what therapy was for, right? He could be honest for once in my life. “It’s all my fault.”
“How long has it been?” His therapist asked, glancing at the round clock on her wall.
“About 12 hours?”
“Okay.”
“That’s really strange for us,” Anthony hastily explained, quickly feeling embarrassed about the situation and if he was appearing overdramatic. “We talk all the time. We lived together up until last week.
His therapist continued to write down a few sentences, the scraping of the pen against her paper making Anthony’s skin itch. “Tell me what happened.”
“It was a bad argument,” Anthony began, the memories of last night filling him with a heavy dread. “My brother had put a picture of us, multiple pictures of us, on display in a gallery. I panicked and I reacted badly. We both said hurtful things. The worst we’ve ever had. She told me she was in love with me. I told her I remembered our kiss I pretended to forget over a year ago. It ended with her telling me she never wanted to see me again.”
“Do you love her back?”
The question caught Anthony completely off guard. This was the most honest he had been in a very long time and his therapist was brushing over a lot of details, focusing on particular ones. “No, I do.”
“But you didn’t tell her that?”
“No.”
“Hmm,” His therapist said, nodding her head as she continued to scribble down a few sentences. “That is complicated. Could you tell me about your parents?”
Anthony’s breath caught in his throat. He couldn’t face that today. When he had gone to therapy previously, they had sometimes spoken about his parents, mainly his father. Anthony didn’t have the strength. “I don’t want to talk about my father. I need to know what to say to Kate.”
“That’s okay,” She said, nodding her head slowly. “You have every right to not answer this question and I will drop it. Why do you not want to talk about your father?”
“He died when I was eighteen.” Anthony explained, figuring it would come out sooner or later.
“That must have been difficult.”
“It was.” Anthony’s words were caught between his teeth.
“Do you have any siblings?”
“I have seven,” Anthony answered, cracking his knuckles in his lap. “I’m the eldest.”
“I can imagine that’s a lot of responsibility at the age of eighteen,” She said slowly, as if she was trying to figure something out. “Especially when suffering from such a loss.”
“It is,” Anthony said, avoiding her eyes completely as he looked around the room. He didn’t want to talk about his family. That’s not why he came. “It’s my family. I’d do anything for them.”
“Why do you think you don’t deserve love?”
Anthony gaped at her. “I don’t think that.”
“If you were willing to step up and take responsibility for your family and ensure their happiness,” She said, leaning forward in her chair. “Why can’t you do the same for yourself?”
“I don’t want to lose her,” Anthony said, his voice coming out a lot shakier and lower than it had in a long time. “She’s everything to me. Everything. I screw things up. I’ve never been good with relationships. I desperately tried to not screw things up and I did it anyway. I really tried to stop feeling like this. I even went to America to stop feeling like this and try to find someone new. It just always comes back to this and now-now it’s too late.”
“This is terribly cliche, but it’s the truth. It’s never too late and you will never know until you try. Why are you so sure you and Kate will fail? I say you and Kate as there are two of you in this. It seems like you put a lot of pressure on yourself. When it comes to your family and your relationships.” Her words were hitting Anthony forcefully, completely overwhelming him. “You should try giving yourself a chance.”
“I don’t think I can.”
“You are standing in your own way. Why is that?”
He was getting really sick of all these questions.
“Kate deserves better.”
His therapist raised her eyebrow slightly, “Isn’t that for Kate to decide?”
Anthony had no response to that.
“Anthony, we have absolutely no control over what could happen in the future. Our fears will still exist in the past, present and future. What we can try to control is now. Good and bad things happen everyday. Nothing also happens everyday. Nothing sounds quite exhausting, dont you think?”
“Sometimes it is easier to do nothing. Sometimes, we have to take a chance on the good or bad things happening,” She told him, smiling softly at him. “Sometimes, we just need to take that chance.”
Something just clicked.
He had to take that chance.
“I have to go,” Anthony jumped up, running a hand through his hair and slightly waving the other one around. “I have to talk to Kate. If she’ll talk to me, I’ll take that chance. Right? Right. Yes. Wow. Okay. Thank you, doctor. Thank you-”
“I’ll have my assistant book you in for an appointment next week,” His therapist responded, a slight smile on her face as she stood up to open the door for him. “Good luck, Anthony.”
Colin and Benedict stood up as Anthony walked into the waiting room, curious expressions on their faces.
“I have to tell Kate I’m in love with her.”
Anthony glanced down at his phone, which began buzzing his hand. Edwina’s name flashed on his screen.
Anthony answered the call, his heart beating rapidly in his chest. Maybe it was Kate. Maybe she had lost her phone and that’s why she hadn’t been in contact with him last night. “Edwina?”
“Anthony,” Edwina’s shaky voice spoke through the phone, sending cold shivers down Anthony’s spine. “It’s Kate.”
Anthony had burst through the hospital doors, running up stairs and through doors until he found the room Kate was in after multiple directions from nurses, Colin and Benedict hot on his heels.
Edwina had reassured him that Kate was fine. Her brain scans and other injuries had come back completely clear, the worst thing that had happened was her leg had been broken.
He had to see her. He had to see her alive and breathing. He had to make sure she was okay.
“Kate.”
Anthony had never felt so nauseous and anxious in his entire life.
“Are you okay?”
Kate was there, sitting up in her hospital bed with her casted leg elevated in the air. She didn’t appear to have any other injuries, her dark hair was in a bun on the top of her head and she did have some scrapes and bruises along her arms, and a tiny scratch on her cheek.
“That's none of your business.”
That was the response he expected and it hurt just as he expected. He did deserve it.
“Kate was skating in Hyde Park when a cyclist ran into her, and she landed on her leg," Edwina explained carefully, anxiously glancing between Anthony and Kate. Benedict and Colin were behind Anthony, smiling awkwardly at everyone in the room and shooting a relieved expression at Kate. She smiled back at them, at least she wasn't icing them out.
Kate just refused to look at Anthony. “Get out.”
“We’re going to get some coffee in the canteen.” said Mary, beginning to drag an anxious looking Edwina out of the hospital room.
“Don’t you dare,” Kate snapped, raising her voice at her mother and sister. She pointed at the chairs they just vacated. “Anthony is the only one who will be leaving this hospital room.”
What did he expect? She had every right to be furious with him. It wasn't going to be easy and he would do whatever it took to fix this. To fix them. “I’ll wait in the waiting room until you want to talk.”
“I don’t want to talk.”
He nodded, making his way towards the doorway he had only come through. He knew Kate and pushing her wasn’t going to achieve anything. He had fucked up and he had to fix it in the way she wanted him to. “I’ll just be waiting then.”
And waited, he did.
He waited for two weeks until Kate was released from the hospital.
He tried everything. He had taken the time off work to be there during visiting hours, waiting for her to finally let him speak to her. He had drafted about fifty different speeches before she was released, thinking about everything he had spoken about with his therapist. He went to two more sessions during Kate’s stay and he felt something was really changing.
Except for Kate’s willingness to speak to him.
When he knocked on her door, she told him to get lost. When he brought her flowers, she threw them at him. When he brought her food, she wouldn’t touch it. She ignored his texts and calls.
She had every right to make him suffer and she was doing a superb job at it.
He spent his time on business calls or chatting with whoever was visiting Kate. Every Bridgerton but Anthony had been allowed in. He got to know her nurses and doctors, getting updates on Kate’s progress and asking them questions about her leg and the healing process.
Mary sat beside Anthony in the waiting room one afternoon, handing him a cup of coffee. “Thank you.”
“I started worrying less, you know.”
Anthony turns to look at Mary, frowning in confusion.
“Kate is a very good person. She takes care of people. She took care of Edwina and I more than she should have, especially after my husband died.” A sad expression appeared on her face. “My husband always said Kate tried to take care of him when her mother passed away. She was four years old.”
He smiled sadly, taking a small sip of his coffee. “That sounds like Kate.”
“It does, doesn’t it?” Mary nodded her head, wrapping her hands around her coffee cup. “I always wanted that for her. Someone who would take care of her and she would let them. I wasn’t so sure it would ever happen until she brought you home.”
Anthony blinked at Mary, completely taken aback. He had known Mary for eight years now and they had spent a good bit of time together, but he couldn’t remember ever speaking to her alone. Especially like this.
“I knew she finally had someone to take care of her. You’ve been so good to her.”
“I don’t know if she’ll forgive me this time Mary,” Anthony said, his voice croaky as he hung his head low. “I don’t know if I deserve to be forgiven.”
“Kate didn’t talk to her father and I for two weeks because we didn’t let her go to an Eminem concert when she was twelve years old,” Mary said, chuckling softly at the fond memory. “She will come around.”
“We all make mistakes, Anthony. I don’t know what happened between you two,” Mary said softly, reaching over to squeeze his hands. “I do know you’ll be able to fix yours.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Kate,” Edwina said, exhaustion flooding her voice as she pushed Kate’s wheelchair to a stop in front of the exit of the hospital. “Anthony’s car is the only car big enough to bring you home! You’re meant to lie across the back seat.”
Kate was glaring at Anthony with such an intensity, he was genuinely terrified. She was absolutely furious at the prospect of Anthony driving her home. “I’d rather walk.”
“I suppose you should have thought about that before you went skating on those death traps,” Anthony said, deciding that if she wouldn’t talk to him, he might be able to at least get an insult if he winded her up. Then, she would technically have spoken to him. “Hop on in.”
Kate’s mouth dropped open as she watched Anthony open up his back door, which had been filled with blankets and pillows to help Kate get comfortable. She knew she had no choice. The two nurses helped Kate into the backseat, buckling her in as Edwina got into Anthony’s car. Mary was following them home.
Kate, furious about recent events, was sulking in the back seat.
Edwina and Sophie hadn’t been overly kind to Anthony the first week after Kate’s accident. He didn’t blame them, he deserved every single bit of slack he got for what he’d done. They had eased up on him the last week, probably out of pure pity as he desperately tried to fix things with Kate who so far wanted nothing to do with him.
They finished their awkward car ride once Anthony parked in Kate’s flat’s underground car park. Now the fun really began. He would make himself useful in any way he could to help Kate, so Edwina and Mary had asked him to drive her home once he had offered.
“Kate,” Edwina said slowly, clearly nervous about what she was about to say as she opened her sister’s door. “Mum and I aren’t strong enough to get you out of the car.”
“Whose side are you on?” Kate snapped, realizing exactly what was going on. “There’s not a chance in hell-”
“I am on your leg’s side!” Edwina snapped, everyone’s eyes widening as Edwina’s temper flared. It was a rare sight. “I am losing the will to live here, Kate. Just let Anthony carry you upstairs and you can do whatever you want. Throw anything you want at him for all I care. Just get upstairs.”
Anthony leaned into the back seat, carefully moving Kate and her leg towards the edge of the seat. They were so close, his arms wrapped around her. If he looked at her, he could count the freckles sprawled across her nose and cheek and how many eyelashes she had. He had done it a million times before.
Except he couldn’t.
Kate refused to look at him.
He got her out of the car until she could support herself on her crutches, making her way towards the lifts. Anthony, Edwina and Mary brought all of her bags upstairs to her flat. Anthony had stocked her fridge and cupboards with all her favourite things and had gotten it professionally cleaned yesterday. He also had about five bouquets of tulips in each room.
“Simon dropped in some food from his restaurant,” Edwina said, smiling softly as she began to unpack the bag. “Thank god. I’m starving. Anthony?”
“I’ll go.” Anthony said, shaking his head as he headed towards the door after dropping the last bag on the floor. The hope he had of fixing things with Kate was really starting to diminish. She really despised him.
She wouldn’t even look at him.
Kate waved a crutch in his direction. It was the first time she had spoken to only him directly in over two weeks. “Stop getting me tulips!”
Anthony turned around to look at her, shaking his head simply. “No.”
“We are going to go out for a walk,” Mary suggested loudly, tugging at Edwina who gaped at her mother in disbelief and then glanced back down at the food. The two Sheffields practically ran out of Kate’s flat, bag of food in their hand, and surprisingly weren’t stopped by Kate.
This was his chance.
“How are you?”
Kate’s hard glare hadn’t faded. “Why do you care?”
He visibly softened. “Of course I care.”
“I don’t think you do, actually,” Kate snapped, aggressively fluffing the pillows behind her back where she sat on her grey couch. “I thought you cared until I realized what you had done. I thought you cared until I stood there telling you I loved you and all you did was tell me that you had lied to me and how we would never work. I never expected you to love me back, what did I expect was some-”
“Are you on drugs?”
“Excuse me?” Kate’s voice was almost a shriek.
Anthony had to really stop himself from rolling his eyes. “I can’t say this if you’re in any way inebriated.”
“No,” Kate muttered, crossing her arms across her chest, “I still despise you, so I’m of sound mind.”
“I should have kissed you. That night. When we were at Aubrey Hall. Seven years ago. I should have kissed you in the lake. I should have kissed you at the Law Ball in college. I should have kissed you when we were in Spain. When we were in my dorm. Your dorm. In the morning. In the afternoon. In the evening. There were so many times where I should have kissed you, Kate.”
“You did kiss me,” Kate spat out, tears flooding her eyes that made Anthony’s chest clench. “You kissed me and you pretended that you didn’t remember.”
“I’m an idiot. I’m a fool. There’s no rational explanation for why I did it. I was so scared of losing you, Kate. But I lost you anyway. I’ll never be more sorry for that, Kate.” Anthony took a few tentative steps towards her, crouching down so he was at her eye level. “I’m so sorry for hurting you. Please, just listen to me. I’ll leave you alone afterwards if that’s what you want.”
“I was on my way to yours when Edwina rang me,” Anthony said, trying to remember everything he had wanted to say and had written down so many times. “I was on my way to tell you I was in love with you. I was an asshole, the night of the gallery. A complete asshole. I panicked. I saw everything on that bloody picture that I have wanted and dreamed of for years, and I panicked. I was so scared of losing what we had that I was too scared to take the chance on having something more.”
Kate stared at him with her wide brown eyes, the ones he had missed so bloody much. He had missed everything about her and now he was here and he was trying. He was desperately trying and he had no idea if it would be enough. “What are you trying to say, Anthony?”
“I’m in love with you. I’ve been in love with you since I was nineteen years old. I’ve denied it and denied it, because I’m screwed up, and I know you deserve better than me, but it's always been you Kate. It will always be you. I was terrified of screwing things up and losing you because I can’t live without you Kate. I don’t ever want to. You’re my best friend. You’re my person.”
“When I heard you were hurt and there was a chance that I could lose you-I can’t fathom life without you, Kate.” Anthony’s voice broke off as he spoke, his voice choking on air. “I can’t. I don’t want to. All I want is you, Kate. I’ll do anything to prove that to you. I’m all in. If you’ll have me.”
“Why do you get to decide?”
Anthony blinked at her through his watery eyes, hastily wiping them. He had finally said everything he wanted to say and the biggest weight had been taken off his chest. The anxiety of waiting on Kate’s response still clawed at him. “What?”
“Why do you get to decide that I deserve better than you?” Kate asked, narrowing her eyes as she looked at him.
“I don’t know,” He answered honestly, shaking his head as he leaned against the couch. “It wasn’t that I decided. It was just so obvious to me. You deserve everything, Kate. Everything. That isn’t me. All I can do is try-”
“No.”
His heart stopped in his chest, a rigid stance completely taken over. Was this it? Was Kate ending things forever? Has he lost for her good?
“You should have asked me.”
Anthony couldn’t help the sigh of relief that came out of him. “I know.”
“I’ve always been smarter than you.”
He smiled softly, nodding his head. “That’s debatable.”
“Do you always have to have an answer for everything?” She asked, completely exasperated, but there wasn’t any annoyance detected in her tone. It was almost teasing.
“I suppose,” He said slowly, his eyes never moving off hers. “Some things never changed.”
“No,” She said softly, her eyes moving around his face. “They really don’t.”
“I should have asked you too,” Kate added a few seconds later, visibly gulping as she pushed some of the loose strands of hair in front of her face behind her ears.
“I’m still so mad at you,” She murmured, blinking away a few tears that rolled down her red cheeks. “I’m so mad. I’m not going to suddenly stop being mad because you’re in love with me and I’m in love with you. We’re going to have to work at this. It isn’t going to be easy.”
“I deserve it.” He nodded in agreement, not being able to stop the small smile breaking out on his face as she said she loved him. “I know. I’ll do anything, Kate. Anything.”
She loved him.
She loved him.
Kate was in love with him.
“Hold my hand.” She murmured, extending her fingers towards him. Their fingers interlock smoothly, her soft, petite palm and his large, rougher hand against each other.
“If you had asked me,” Kate said, her voice coming out wobbly as she spoke. “I would have told you that you’re it for me. It’s always been you. From the moment I met you, it was always going to be you. I didn’t stand a chance. It’s not about deserving, Anthony. It’s about being there for someone no matter what. You’ve always been there for me. And I always want you to be.”
Their faces were extremely close now. He could smell her again, that soft scene of lilies and soap that he had missed so much. He could count the freckles on her cheek and her long, delicate eyelashes. His lips are “I’m sorry it took me so long.”
“Us,” Kate corrected him, her breathing small and shallow. “It only took us eight years.”
“This isn’t how I imagined it.”
“I’m so tired of imagining, aren’t you?”
He kisses her.
It’s better than he’s ever imagined it.
Why?
Because it’s real.

Note
Hello professor, I have a pretty heavy question I’m afraid, but I’m running out of people to ask, so I’ll try my best to keep it PG13.
It’s my Mienshao, Daisy. Up until recently, she and I were members of a police task force tasked with rooting out illegal Pokemon smuggling rings and underground high stakes tournaments. We’ve been partners for a long time, me and Daisy, we grew up together, and I dare say we made a great team. But then things went wrong.
For the sake of security I can’t go into too much detail, but we were participating in a raid when we got ambushed. Someone must have tipped the smugglers off, because they were waiting for us when we got there. During the firefight, there was an explosion, a gas tank got set on fire by a charizard, I believe, and Daisy and I happened to be close. She got out with a few minor burns and scrapes, I... Did not.
I’ll spare you the gory details, but I have been confined to a wheel chair ever since, and I am due to be fitted for a prosthetic leg next week.
I won’t lie, the transition has been hard for everybody, me, my friends, my family. My other Pokémon have been hovering around me like over protective nannies for weeks. But I think out of all of us, Daisy has been taking it the hardest. Half of the day she spends locked to my side like a bodyguard, threatening to punch anyone that gets too close into oblivion. And the other half, well...
She’s started putting herself through some kind of hellish self training routine. Doing katas until she all but collapses from exhaustion, running laps for hours, fighting every Pokemon she can convince to fight, wild or trained. Daisy’s always been tough, and she’s always loved training, but this... This isn’t training, it’s a death march. I’m getting extremely worried, and that’s not even everything!
She’s stopped eating her favorite foods, deliberately choosing ones I know she hates, she won’t let me pet her anymore, she just steps out of reach, trying not to look at me. But most worryingly, she’s started cutting off her whiskers. She’s always been so proud of her whiskers, she groomed them every day, always got grumpy when I teased her for having a big ol’ mustache. Now anytime they get longer than an inch, she slices them off with her claws and throws them in fireplace, like some kind ceromony.
I’m almost certain Daisy feels guilty for coming out mostly unscathed, when I didn’t. She’s always been a bit protective, even before we joined the police, and she’s saved my life multiple times out in the field, but now she feels like she’s failed me, I think. I’ve tried to convince her that it wasn’t her fault, but that only seems to redouble her efforts. I’m terrified she’s going to burn herself out if she keeps going like this, and I don’t know what to do.
I know this is a pretty heavy question, but I I’m not sure who else to ask. Is there anything I can do to convince her that she doesn’t need to hurt herself like this? Or, something? Just anything to help! Losing my leg was jarring, but losing Daisy would be unbearable!... I just... I just want my best friend to be okay.
I am sorry for what you’ve been through, I cannot begin to understand what it’s like to be in your shoes, but like all recovery, physical or mental, this will take a fair bit of time to get past, you both may never fully return to how things were, but it can get better and you can both return to a full life together with work and dedication.
I’ve certainly seen Pokemon go to extreme lengths after dangerous incidents to protect their loved ones or themselves, in this case it would be wise to assume your pokemons suffering with a hefty bill of PTSD, and needs some actual therapy to handle the feelings and thoughts they’re having. We have facilities to accommodate that if you’re local to Johto, but most Pokemon centres will be able to put you in contact with reliable and certified practices to begin unravelling the issues that now plague Daisy.
That she considers herself to have come away reasonably unscathed is not true, yes your life has physically changed, but she needs to step back and take a look at her life too. Everything’s different now, and more specifically how she’s treating herself and handling her feelings. If that’s not trauma and injury, I don’t know what else it could be. You both came away with damage that day, physical or not. The first step is to help her see that, and to begin to understand that despite this all, you can both continue to move forward together if you can overcome the injury together, it is an event you shared, and you two can aid each others recovery with time and care.
There’s some seriously gifted therapists out there, those who study for years and can help far more than me, they’ll take time to break down the events, and start to really get into the feelings that your partner is going through. The cycle for Daisy right now comes around to self-punishment, and seems to be stuck on a loop. She needs time and space to process her feelings of guilt, grief, fear and loss, facing them instead of burying herself in her rigorous training. While it is difficult to discuss, you two have a strong bond that means you could talk with her. Try to remind her who’s truly responsible, she may be blaming herself, which is pretty common in these situations, but at the root of it, you were doing your routine job, and the bad guys, the Pokemon smugglers and goons are to blame. THEY caused the issue, not her, and while it may not sink in right away it’s worth saying, and sticking to. You said you told her that it wasn’t her fault, which is the gut reaction, perhaps giving her a logical target instead of herself will work better for now. Reiterating the true issue, and taking the heat off of her may help with other tasks such as self care, later down the recovery road.
Her guilt will feel terrible, but it kind of works as a protector, keeping her distanced from the worse, more overwhelming feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. In fact the guilt that masks this all will slowly make things worse over time. That underlying intense emotion below the guilt is what you both need to work through, but more than anything, she needs to face it, in her own time, come to terms with it, and eventually (hopefully) come to an understanding that life is an endless cycle of events, things will happen, but you have to pick yourself up and turn the lemons into lemonade. She could have lost you that day, that you came away with your life is a miracle, and now you two get more time together because of that. Luck isn’t something that runs out, it’s not like there’s only so much of it to go around, it is like wining the lottery. Sometimes 20 people win, other times no one does. It’s hard to accept, but there’s no greater order to stuff that happens, but when we can come to this conclusion, it’s oddly freeing. I’ve seen a fair few Pokemon in a symilar state who can move on when they realise there’s an odd randomness to the world and everything that goes on.
This is a job for someone with far greater skills than I, but you must help her by also looking after yourself, laugh when you can, show her that your life is still very full, and that you have loved ones, and joy to share with others. You mentioned that you’re due a prosthetic, and though the transition will be long and no doubt a little difficult at first, getting yourself back on two feet (kind of) will show her, and your other Pokemon that you’re willing to move forward. I think there’s a lot to be said about talking during this all. She wants to fight, to be strong, if this is how she’s going to cope, fine. If she’s out training, sit with her, spend whatever time you can by her side, as she’s taking this the hardest. You don’t have to say a thing, just try to do your best, without putting yourself in too much discomfort or pain. Reminding her who would be devastated if it had been her who got hurt, if she was not around, may help ground her back in reality a bit. You both got granted a gift that day, you came away alive, if she works so hard she burns out, that gift was wasted. She can use her kindness, and strength to help you, she can pass her knowledge and skill forward, but it’s hard to help others, and do your best if you’re exhausted beyond reason. Kind of like trying to give people bread from a basket but the damn basket is empty yknow? You got to take time to refill so you can help those around you again, so you have some bread to give. I know, probably sounds a little dumb but it’s always been the way I remember it.
Another very useful thing I’ve found with trauma survivors would be meeting others who have been in the same position. There’s plenty of support groups for both people and Pokemon who have been through events that left them in a difficult situation, emotionally and physically. Even here at the lab we have many species who have been left without limbs, with life changing damage, and a lot of them also have the emotional trauma too. She would probably do well to spend time with them, you can send her to a resort to retreat and recoup erase, mix with others who were just as angry as she is now, or you can take time to go with her to groups to interact with others. It’s one thing to have humans help, but it’s a whole other level of connection when Pokemon can help their own. They bond quicker, trust faster, and generally are more open to listening when it’s coming from a place of mutual experience. If she had time to talk to pokemon who actually lost their trainers, or parts of themselves, she may find some peace, even if only temporarily.
Don’t mention the whiskers, and where possible don’t offer her foods she actively likes, but also not ones she actively dislikes. Just for now. Start the ball rolling with just plain simple things that are neither good or bad. Indifferent is better than bad right now, the punishment she’s inflicting on herself will need addressing further, so contact a therapist, they use Rotom or porygon to translate from poke-speech to human language, and the repair can begin with a registered professional. My advice is not sound proof, I certainly feel like I have missed something important, it’s a big response, but it’s a start in the right direction, and should you come up to any further issues, message back and update us with what’s going on. With work you two will be on track to recover. Remember, patience is the biggest thing here, you two have history, and a therapist will no doubt take the sessions as a pair, and work with you to help Daisy feel less guilty over time. I hope you both find peace, and that both of you repair in due time. Good luck with the new leg, a step towards recovery for sure.

Ginger Snap, Chapter 6
A/N  Well, here it is.  The last chapter of Ginger Snap.   As an unplanned fic inspired by a vanity license plate, I’m happy with how it turned out.   There will be a short epilogue posted in the next week or so.  In the meantime,  thank you so much for coming on this unexpected ride with me!   This chapter’s themed title is Fire in the Belly.
Previous chapters are best enjoyed on my AO3 page, because I have a bad habit of going back and editing them after they’ve been posted.
The next five months were some of the most difficult of my life.
After our talk, Frank and I agreed that it would be best that we parted ways.  The Southside flat was close to the university, plus I’d never truly felt at home there, so it made sense for him to keep it.  Fortunately, we’d never combined our savings and I still had money tucked away from my time as a medical resident in Boston.
Geillis wanted me to move into her sprawling Murrayfield home, at least temporarily, but I knew that I needed a place of my own.  To stand on my own two feet, as it were.   Which was how I found myself moving my few belongings into a modest Morningside walk-up as the rest of Edinburgh celebrated Hogmanay with fireworks and drunken revelry.
I scheduled the written component of my medical licensing exam for February.  This was likely foolhardy, but I’d already wasted enough time.  As a result, almost every waking hour was dedicated to studying.  The flat remained an empty box whose naked beige walls bore witness to my rudimentary existence.
Geillis called regularly, reminding me to eat and to occasionally step outside for a breath of fresh air.  Returning up the high street from one of our weekly coffee dates, a bright flash in a shop window caught my eye.
I stopped and stared as the afternoon sun lit the vase like a shard of stained glass.  It was a profound shade of blue: the colour of a field of indigo, of the night sky in a Byzantine icon, of Jamie’s eyes when he laughed.  It sat on my windowsill, filled with the season’s first daffodils, as I pored over practice exams.
***
“Geillis, I passed!  I fucking passed!”  An elderly woman seated across from me on the bus muttered under her breath about vulgar Sassenachs, but I was too elated to care.
“Of course ye did, ye brilliant disaster.  Now I can brag tae the neighbours I have my own personal physician.”
“Not so fast, Duncan.  I still need to pass the clinical exam, and that’s no small thing.”  My gut twisted just thinking about it, but unlike the written exam, there was little I could do to prepare.  Either I knew how to perform as a doctor or I did not.  The long months since I’d last treated a patient loomed like a large shadow over that question.
“Och, yer bum’s oot the window Claire,” my friend dismissed blithely.  “Ye’re gonna do great.  When do ye head down tae yer homeland, then?”
“May first.”  The practical examination took place in Manchester and needed to be scheduled three months in advance.
“Sounds like ye’ve got some time on yer hands.  Whate’er are ye going tae do with yerself?” Geillis asked in a singsong voice.
Fortunately for me, spring was Edinburgh’s most pleasant season.  Its many gardens and laneways erupted in carpets of buds and blooms.  The air smelled fresh and green, like biting into a tart apple.  I took long walks and fell in love with the city I now called home.  There were secondhand bookstores to explore and a weekly craft market where I gradually amassed an assortment of items that made my flat feel like a home.  With each passing day, my existence felt more and more like a life; one I defined for myself.
I also started to explore my options for employment, hoping for a job offer from one of the city’s hospitals that was conditional upon my successful completion of the licensing process.  It was to that end that I found myself walking down the corridor of The Royal Edinburgh hospital after what I hoped had been a rather successful interview with the deputy director of surgery.
“Claire?”
I recognized her voice immediately.  Before turning around I closed my eyes and sent out a fervent appeal to the universe.
“Jenny, hi.  How are you?”
She looked just the same, her straight black hair such a contrast to her brother.  Next to her stood a man, but not the man I had conjured the moment I heard her voice.  I was unclear whether that meant my prayer had been answered or not.  Seeing my gaze stray, Jenny jumped to introductions.
“This is my husband, Ian.  We’re here fer treatment on his leg.”
“Nothing serious, I hope.”
“Jes a fitting fer a new prosthetic.  Jenny keeps beatin’ me o’er the head with the old one, ye see.”  I laughed, instantly liking his easy-going manner, so in contrast with Jenny’s intensity.
“Ye must be the Claire I hear sae much about,” he went on, and I wondered what had been said about me in the Fraser household.
“Nothing bad, I hope.”
Ian smiled warmly.  “Only good things, I promise ye.”
“What brings ye tae the hospital, Claire?” Jenny interjected.
I explained how I was in the process of qualifying to practice medicine in Scotland, provided I could pass my exams.  Jenny and Ian were both delighted, congratulating me as though I’d already accomplished my goal.  As we spoke about Wee Jamie’s latest exploits and the ongoing growth of Ginger Snap, I couldn’t help notice that Jenny was staring at my hands.  At my left hand in particular.  Finally, I couldn’t resist temptation any longer.
“And, how is Jamie doing?”  I tried to sound casual, but I was certain my faltering voice betrayed me.
“Very well,” Jenny replied.  “Busy, as ye can imagine, but he thrives on chaos.”
I nodded, trying to be satisfied with the news that he was well.  It was the most I could hope for, really.  Jenny eyed me shrewdly before continuing.
“He’s a good man, my brother.  Any lass would be verra lucky tae have him.  I’d like tae see him settled, but he refuses tae be rushed.  Says the right woman is worth the wait.”  She paused before adding,  “I reckon ye ken wha’ he means.”
“Yes,” I breathed.  “I know exactly what he means.”
***
I took the overnight train from Edinburgh to Manchester.  It meant I was likely to arrive at the testing centre deprived of sleep, but I rationalized that most of my residency could be characterized as one long evaluation under similar conditions, and I hadn’t killed anyone yet.  Still, as the velvety darkness slipped by outside my window, studded by the lights of passing farms, my doubts got the better of me.
I texted Geillis, looking for moral support.  For once she didn’t reply immediately.  There was one other name on my laughably short list of contacts.  I deliberated for all of a minute, but the late hour and creeping panic made me impulsive.
Hello.
Best to start with something innocuous, rather than the slightly more revealing “I miss you.  I think about you every day.”  A reply bubble appeared immediately after I hit send.  At least I hadn’t woken him up.  A small tempest stirred in my gut.
Arsonist.  Hello.  How are you?
I tried to picture him.  Was he at home?  Working late?  Or, in a scenario that played out far too often in my mind, on a date?
I’m alright.  Well, to be honest, I feel like I’m going to puke and cry.  Not necessarily in that order.
Och, lass.  Do you need me to come over?
Damn it, this man.  I had done nothing to deserve his unswerving loyalty but mislead him and then disappear for months on end.  And yet here he was, willing to come to my aid on the flimsy pretext of a late night text.  Guilt and tenderness warred for possession of my heart.
That may prove a bit difficult, Jamie.  I’m on a train to England.
There was a long pause, and then a two letter reply.
Oh.
I realized at once that he’d leapt to the wrong conclusion: that I had left Edinburgh for good.  I rushed to correct the error.
I’m taking the second stage of my examination to practice as a NHS doctor tomorrow.   It’s all hands-on situations, and the licensing facility is in Manchester.
Arsonist, that’s wonderful news!  I’m so proud of you.
I blushed, then leaned my heated cheek against the chilled pane of glass.  It had been a rash impulse, but this conversation was exactly what I needed.  I wasn’t alone in this.  Geillis and Jamie were in my corner.
What has your stomach in a twist, then?
What if I’ve forgotten what to do?!  It’s been almost a year since I’ve so much as used a stethoscope, Jamie.  The exam is eighteen real-life situations and you’re given eight minutes to respond to each one.  Not a second longer.  I’m just...  what if I fail?
And there it was.  The kernel of fear that lived at the heart of everything I did.  What if I failed?   What if my best wasn’t good enough?
Claire, listen to me.  You’re a doctor, just as I am a chef.  It wouldn’t matter if I had not set foot in a kitchen in ten years, I would still remember how to cook, and I know that it’s the same for you.  I believe it with everything in me.
On some level, I knew that he was right.  But it still comforted me tremendously to hear it from someone I trusted.
Alright.  That helps.  I should let you get to bed.  Thank you for talking me off my ledge, Jamie.
Anytime, Arsonist.
As I got ready sign off, another text bubble appeared.
Oh, and Claire?  Don’t burn down their wee laboratory, okay? ;-)
I laughed out loud, muting my phone and reclining my seat.  Outside, the stars shone brightly, tiny fires in the firmament to guide me on my way.
***
It was a lovely late spring day, and the retractable doors to the fire station were open to the warm breeze.  I could hear Angus’ voice as he led a cooking demonstration for a group of young women; a bridal shower by the look of their ridiculous costumes.
“Mind the coriander, lass.  Tis a verra powerful aphrodisiac, ken?  I willna be held responsible if ye canna resist my considerable charms after ye eat yon soup.”
There was an outburst of giggles as I rounded the corner and entered the reception area.  Jenny was on the phone.  She halted mid-sentence when she saw me walk in.  I rubbed my hands down the front of my jeans, trying to stay calm.
“He’s in the storeroom, in the back,” Jenny prompted before I could even offer a greeting.  I smiled gratefully, relieved I didn’t have to make small talk.  I had only so much courage stored in reserve, and I didn’t want to use it all up before reaching my destination.
The storeroom was long and narrow, lit by a single naked bulb and girded with shelves.  Jamie stood with his broad back to the door, his curls absorbing the light like amber.  He had a clipboard in one hand, performing some kind of inventory.
“Jes how many lentils dae ye reckon we need, Janet?  There’s nine cans of them here already, and ye have us ordering ten more.”
I’d almost forgotten how much I loved his voice, the undulating grit and silk of it.  I had to remaster the art of speech before I could reply.
“It’s not Jenny.  It’s me.  Claire.”
He froze, and if it weren’t for the sudden rapid flow of his breath I would have assumed he hadn’t heard me.  My nerves got the better of me and I blurted out, “I like lentils.  You should listen to your sister.”
“Claire.”  More sigh than word.  He slowly turned.  It was when our eyes met that I knew nothing had changed for him.  It was still there, after all these months.  That look that told me I was the map to his journey, the focus to his vision, the reason to his why.
Hopefully he could read that same certainty on my face.
“I passed my exams,” I began.  “I’m a doctor again.”
“Ye never stopped bein’ a doctor.  This jus’ makes it official.”
“I’m still a disaster in the kitchen,” I continued.  “Last week I ruined two saucepans.”
“Tha’s only a tragedy if ye dinna have someone willin’ tae cook fer ye,” he replied with a strange squinting motion I understood was meant to be a wink.
“I’m still learning who I am.  How to be true to the person on the inside,” I confessed.  This is what had kept me away for so long, worried that I would escape from Frank’s orbit just to be caught up in another.  Jamie never once expected my submission, but that didn’t mean I wouldn’t offer it out of habit.
“I’ll let ye in on a secret.  Sae is everyone else,” he replied.
Without realizing it, we’d both been moving until we were crowded together amongst the dried herbs and canned goods.  My hand rested against the solid metronome of his heart.  Just one more confession to go.
“I burn for you in a way I’ve never burned for anything before.”
There.  It was said.  A thousand wings of rapture beat against the cage of my ribs, clamoring to break free.  Jamie carefully pushed a loose curl behind my ear before cupping my jaw.
“Wee arsonist.  Come, set my life on fire.”
