Posting this here. An incredibly self-indulgent Killjoy AU for Hello From The Hallowoods. Beeeeeeeaaaaar with me.

Summary:

Olivier Song is a S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W, the best of the best of Battery City’s prestigious Downing Hill Academy. Their first mission to the Zones, though, finds its hitch when they are sent after the Stone Maiden—a reclusive and dangerous rebel that’s been inspiring the desert for decades. A Fabulous Killjoys-flavored take on Hello From The Hallowoods.

Still not over Polly’s scene in Hallowoods 39. I love how much it focused on his friendship with Yaretzi, specifically. It’s been clear he’s attached to and soft over Mort for ages—“I don’t want things to get messy in front of Mort” as an excuse to avoid violence, or “I didn’t do it for you, Mort insisted” to save a life.

But Yaretzi?? She only came along for the ride so she could kill Polly at the end of it. Polly has sidestepped expressing too much openness towards her: fleeing into the woods so she won’t see him cry, using Mort as an excuse for looking out for her, deflecting her concern even as it shakes him to the core.

Even more drastic, we learn that Yaretzi was an assigned target. Polly could have sidestepped Tiff’s ire by focusing on his attachment to Mort, who was recommended by Tiff in the first place.

But instead, he doubled down on how much Yaretzi, the star-wolf, the demon-killer, meant to him. How she was the reason he began to doubt his indoctrination, even before she began to see through his barriers. How for the first time he knows friendship and kindness, and that she was “decent, and caring, and good.”

And then, after his rebellion: “He was rushing through the void, then, looking for a wolf.”

I love this friendship so so much and cannot imagine how wonderful it will be to see them reunited with all pretense dropped, finally free to admit how much they care about each other!!
