#hell; if they still wanted to have Jason turning back to the Titans side in the last episode

Sure! I'm sorry for the delay, it took longer than I thought to make my thoughts into something vaguely coherent lol
Also, this got long, so it's going under a cut and, fair warning; there be spoilers ahead.
Titans has two big failings for me; one is pacing, and the second is, as you sort of mentioned in your ask, that the interpretations of these beloved characters are trying so hard to be dark and edgy that it mostly just makes them supremely unlikable hypocrites.
Both of these come to a head in season 3's Red Hood arc.
It makes sense that they can't do a faithful adaption of UTRH, because Titans is the Dick show, not the Bruce show, and they don't want to try to do the Joker. That's fine, it wouldn't really make sense for this version of Jason anyway - he's older; his childhood trauma is a different flavour; he hasn't been with Bruce for as long; and everyone in this show is more violent and reckless, so Bruce benching Jason for being "too violent and reckless" wouldn't really make sense.
So they kill Jason off in the opening episode, and then they have Bruce kill the Joker and peace out of Gotham because, again, this is the Dick show. We have episodes 2 and 3 of Red Hood causing problems for Dick and the Titans - up to and including killing Hank which apparently we're supposed to be sad about - and then ep 4 where Dick figures out that Red Hood is actually just a pawn working for Jonathan Crane to break him out of Arkham Asylum.
Then we get episode 5, the flashback which shows us that an already suicidally depressed Jason also developed PTSD from the incident with Deathstroke and it's aftermath. He's having nightmares, panic attacks, and is unable to fight anymore. Bruce suggests therapy, which Jason commits to, but then Bruce benches him anyway, which leads Jason to go to Crane because a guy who makes fear gas can probably make an *anti*-fear gas, right?
Well. Sort of.
Crane gives Jason the wrong formula on purpose, and the result is a gas that makes him feel nothing at all. While he's under the influence of this drug, Crane manipulates Jason into proving he's no longer scared by going after the Joker, and then revives him to make him even more indebted to him.
This is all pretty sympathetic, and the next few episodes make a point of confirming that most if not all of what Jason did in ep 2 and 3 was Crane's plan. There's a scene where Jason questions Crane, and is promptly shown that Crane has other underlings who would be happy to replace Red Hood as his second in command.
When Jason undermines Crane again, Crane drugs him (uhh...double drugs him?) and ties him up. The Titans figure out where Crane is hiding and show up to wreck shit, and Jason (now detoxing from the drugs) seems almost pleased about this. Crane escapes, dragging Jason with him, but Jason has had enough of being used, knocks the creep out and runs. He broods on his own for a bit, and then contacts Dick because he realises he maybe fucked up.
So far so good.
I'm not gonna say it's perfect, because there are some really strange choices being made just in general (*cough*confessing that you murdered your teammate to a pair of hookers*cough*), but I can see where they've drawn inspiration from Arkham Knight and tried to connect the dots between the way Jason was treated in season 2 and said well, hey! A kid with RSD up the wazoo is gonna look for approval wherever he can get it, even if that's from a known supervillain who likes fucking with people's heads.
Now, if I were writing the show, this is where I would have Jason's redemption arc start. He walked away from Crane of his own volition, he made the choice himself to reach out to Dick. Crane is desperate and erratic, so having Jason on the titans side isn't any kind of deux ex machina "I know his whole plan and how to stop him" situation.
But because this is Titans, and they so love a bizarre 2nd act team breakup for increasingly stupid reasons, they don't do that.
Instead they pull a fake out, where Crane is evesdropping on Jason and Dick's conversation, and uses that information to lead the Titans into a trap that puts him back in control of the situation. It's never 100% confirmed if Jason was in on this plan or not, but I tend to think he wasn't. Either way, the Titans think he was, so his hope of redemption is dashed and he's drawn back into Crane's circus for another 3 episodes of lacklustre rivalry with Dick that goes nowhere before finally helping the Titans in the final episode.
What's more annoying to me is the way the supposed heroes talk about Jason during this time. When other Titans had been brainwashed, magically controlled, or even just had a violently emotional outburst, they get the benefit of the doubt. Jason doesn't. Gar is the only person asking how this happened, asking how they can *help*. Everyone else is ready to straight up kill Jason for his crimes, even KORI, whose b-plot this season is LITERALLY ABOUT FORGIVING HER SISTER FOR MURDERING HER PARENTS!!
Ahem Anyway.
I'm definitely rambling now lol, but yeah, I think they wrote a decently solid Red Hood plot that fits the Titans-verse, they just tried to make it last a full season when it was a half-season type arc.
Hello yes hi which are these Jason-centric episodes of Titans please? Because I tried it previously and gave up after like 3 episodes because literally every character’s characterisation was annoying me. But I wish to enjoy the Jason hours if that is possible without having to speed run the rest of the 4 seasons. If you please 💙
Oh that is entirely valid, and I would be delighted to help!
So, even though it's not technically Jason-centric, I really do have to recommend season 1 episode 6 "Jason Todd" which, as the name suggests, is his intro episode. It really sets the tone for his and Dick's relationship, and I don't think either of them ever fully recover from this first interaction.
Season 2 is a little trickier, because Jason's story takes place in the background of a couple other episodes - ep 2, 3, and 5, if you did want to skip through them for his bits - but this culminates in season 2 episode 7 "Bruce Wayne", after which Jason leaves the Titans.
Next, you want season 3 episode 5 "Lazarus", which is the flashback episode that bridges how we get from disillusioned Jason to the Red Hood. This is the only fully Jason focused episode, and for unrelated reasons also happens to be my favourite.
The rest of season 3 is... Complicated. It could almost have been good if they'd cut it off halfway through, but they drag it out and flip-flop too many times on Jason's stance for me in the end. I'm happy to give a more detailed breakdown if you want, just let me know!
And last but not least: season 4 episode 11 "Project Starfire" has the Jason Tim interactions, and is well worth skipping through for that alone imo. Jason is so much more settled in himself here that it makes all the suffering almost worth it.
#hell; if they still wanted to have Jason turning back to the Titans side in the last episode#they could have had a gap at the beginning of the season between Jason dying and bringing Red Hood into the story#but what do i know#titans (2018)#jason todd

Happy Birthday
“Surprise!”
A knife was in Jason’s hand in the heartbeat it took for the lights to flicker on. His eyes darted from laughing face to smiling face until he had checked over everyone in the room- all in the time it took to drop his bag and raise his knife-wielding arm.
Bruce was hovering like an uncomfortable shadow behind Damian and Tim, Stephanie lounged on his kitchen counter like a heathen with Cass predictably at her side, Alfred was filming with a gently scuffed phone, Kori and Roy were blowing party horns, Babs was even next to Tim, and Dick was of course at the center of it all. All in all, Jason was now faced with ten unwanted guests in his home. Go fucking figure.
Dick was the one to step forward, wasn’t he always?, still grinning like a fool as he gently took the knife from him, “Took you long enough to show up, Little Wing,” the acrobat wrapped an arm around the larger man’s shoulders, “Figures you’d be late to your own party.”
Jason’s tongue felt leaden as he took in the red streamers hung from his rafters and the large Happy Birthday spelled in silver balloons. His hands felt clammy and he itched for the knife now safely tucked in his brother’s pocket. Unconsciously, his fingers curled into fists as he croakily said, “Didn’t ‘spect an ambush, Dickie.”
Dick tutted like Jason had just said he didn’t expect the sky to be blue, “C’mon, Jaybird, you know better than that.” He did, he truly did, but he didn't expect something for today of all days.
Roy stepped forward, grinning like a fucking idiot in a way that made Jason’s chest tighten, and pulled him into a bro-hug, “Happy birthday,” the archer’s grip tightened, and his voice lowered as he continued, “Star and I can blow this bitch to hell if you want to get out.”
Jason, while not religious, was ready to thank whatever higher power was out there that he had Roy and Kori in his life. Jason forced air back into his lungs and squeezed his fellow Outlaw, “I’ll be okay. They need this,” he patted the redhead’s back, a clear signal for get the fuck off me before I stab you, and accepted the armful of Tamaranean princess.
Kori, ever the least subtle of her teammates, gleefully exclaimed, “Happiest of birthdays, dear one.” She lifted them both off the ground and squeezed hard enough to make something in Jason’s chest creak, “I have informed the Bats that I will burn them if they don’t behave,” she pulled away enough for Jason to see her eyes glowing a fiery green despite her large smile, “and I have brought a present!”
Jason huffed a half laugh as he was lowered back down. Tim offered him an odd sort of half-hug that was followed by Damian's frankly ridiculous handshake. Dick tried to snag him in one of his nightmare hugs of doom, but Roy distracted him with some gossip about the old Titans. Stephanie fully attempted to spear tackle him (fortunately missing), and Cass managed to pin his arms for a hug. Babs simply gave him a stern look, and he was forced into a squatted embrace. He and Bruce just exchanged nods.
But Alfred, Jason let himself be tugged into the old man’s gentle embrace, and he was immediately reminded of better days. Back when every single breath didn’t hurt, back when he could see an action movie without being tossed into fight or flight, back when he could work on a car without having a panic attack, back before he ruined everything.
Jason sniffed a little as he pulled away, blinking hard to push back tears that physically would never appear. He sat down at the table, tolerating the half-noogie Dick tried to give him before Kori nailed him with a star bolt, sending him staggering back a few steps. His smile turned genuine for a few seconds, right up until the cake came out.
There was a large 20 emblazoned across the top in chunky red letters.
That can’t be right. He felt his face fall in real-time as he stared at the burning candles.
He wasn’t twenty.
He had died when he was fifteen, four months before his sixteenth birthday. He came back in October, but he was catatonic for almost two years.
He wasn’t twenty.
He hadn’t aged when he was dead. He hadn’t really aged when he was walking around brain-dead. Right up until they dunked him in the pit, the lights were on, but no one was home.
A dead boy can’t age, right?
He wasn’t twenty- he didn’t even have a driver’s license.
The candles on the cake burned all the way into the icing before he was aware again. Roy was on one side, Kori on the other, as they tried to pull him out of the darkness in his own mind. He loved them both so much it made his chest ache. Jason’s eyes flickered between the other faces at the table, and blurs of memories, shadows, and nightmares looked back at him.
He wasn’t twenty- he couldn’t be.
The world shattered around him in a ghoulish kaleidoscope of greens and reds, fire and blood reaching out and pulling him under. He never turned sixteen, he never turned seventeen, he never turned eighteen, he never turned nineteen- he couldn’t be turning twenty.
The monsters around his table lurched forward in a horrifying swirl of colors that made bile rise up his throat. The hand on his left arm was gently shaking him, but he was beyond that. Jason couldn't breathe there was fucking laughter coming from somewhere and he was scared-
Jason squeezed his eyes shut and bit firmly down on his tongue, trying desperately to regulate his breathing and heart rate. Blood filled his mouth as he shot up from his chair- I’m alive, I’m okay, I’m alive- His hands reached out for Kori and Roy, but they came up empty.
His eyes shot open-

Just a little ficlet I thought up! ***
“I miss my mom.”
The admission was quiet, but Dick saw Jason’s head snap up from his phone, gaze indiscernible as he surveyed Dick. Probably trying to figure out what brought the confession on.
“Ok.” Jason said it like a statement, but Dick could hear the question in it.
“I miss how warm her body felt when she hugged me. I miss being able to bury my head into her stomach and breathe her in…. I miss breathing her in. I miss having a mom and knowing what it’s like to be loved by someone unconditionally. I miss growing and having her there to notice.” Dick got quiet a moment, a little unsure if he should continue sharing, but he felt the need to anyway. “Sometimes I miss being the youngest. My cousin was a few years older than me, all my friends at the circus were. Hell, even the Titans were. I miss being the one cared for. You know?”
Dick saw Jason set down his phone and turn to face Dick head on. After a moment Dick turned as well and matched his brother’s gaze. The confusion that was there making way to understanding.
“Yeah. I know what you mean.”
Dick felt himself relax slightly at the reassurance, closing his eyes he sunk deeper into his living room couch that the two were currently occupying.
“I miss wearing clothes that weren’t replaced as soon as they got holes. And I miss dishes made with cumin and cinnamon. And I miss my dad. God, I miss him so much. He was so calm Jay, he always smiled, he always knew that things were going to be ok, you know? He sang all the time, and no one sings here.” Dick felt his throat close at the realization, not even realizing all this was weighing on his heart until he let himself feel it. “No one sings here, and sometimes I forget about all them. It’s like my life is on auto-pilot and I just don’t think about it. But then I remember and it’s like my body is ripping itself open from the grief and I can’t... I can’t- just”.
Jason shifted in his seat, pulling Dick toward him as he started to get worked up. Breathes coming out quicker than intended. Dick let himself be manhandled into an awkward sideways hug. Unsure of where all this was coming from. For a moment it was quiet as Jason held him until his younger brother let out a heavy breath.
“Sometimes I miss my old apartment. Stupid, you know? The place was filled with water damage and mold and my Ma and I shared a shitty lumpy 20 year old mattress that should have been torched years ago…. But it still was mine, and now it’s gone.” Dick felt Jason shrug, arms still wrapped around him. “I think what people forget is, that to be human is to find the good memories in bad. It’s how we go on. That’s why everyone says grief is a gift, it means you loved someone so much that you get to miss them.”
“That’s stupid.” Dick muttered defiantly, grinning slightly when Jason laughed. “Grief isn’t a gift, it’s the cost of getting to love.”
“Careful Dickie, your dangerously close to sounding cynical and that’s my shtick.”
“I didn’t say it was a cost I was unwilling to pay.” Dick pulled himself back, leaning onto the side of the couch to face Jason once more. “I just wish I had more time to save up before I had to cash in.”
Jason nodded, leaning back himself, though still watching Dick with a careful eye.
“You don’t talk about this often.” Another statement, one Dick knew to be true. He never talked about his parents, not since his current family started to grow.
“Bruce never talked about his parents, for awhile I think I thought grief was locking away memories until they faded into existence. When I realized that wasn’t the case you guys were here and I didn’t want to bring them up in case you felt like… I don’t know… I didn’t love the family I had now?”
Jason stared at him dumbly for a moment.
“That’s the stupidest fucking thing you’ve ever said Goldie and that’s including the time you tried to convince Wally, B was a vampire.” Dick snorted at the memory, which Jason smiled at. “Remembering what you lost doesn’t negate what you have, and the adage that time heals all wounds is misconstruing. It doesn’t mean the injury stops hurting, hell your fucked up knee acts up every time it so much as showers. Just because something isn’t actively gushing blood doesn’t mean its fine, doesn’t mean you don’t still need to take care of it.”
Dick let out a heavy breath, he had forgotten how intuitive Jason could be.
“Yeah. You’re right.”
“Course I’m right, I’m the only one of you fuckers who consistently reads books without pictures in it.”
Dick pushed him roughly but without any heat, dodging the pillow Jason tried to lob at his face in retaliation. For a moment the two tussled, feeling younger than they had in a while. Only stopping when a wayward elbow sent Dick’s lamp thudding to the floor. Slightly out of breath Dick nudged Jason with his foot, the joviality making way for genuineness.
“Thank you. For letting me talk about them.”
Jason gave him a small smile, one without the useful veneer of snark.
“Anytime.”

when I found my love ❤️🖤🤍 (Jason Todd x fem! Reader)
Jason Todd. But you always new him as jay. You were around 10 when you saw a small boy around 11 steeling tires of an old car in the dump. “Hay! You, this is my place back off!” You say to him “ho sorry kid but I need these if I want to eat tonight” the strange boy said picking up the tires. “It will cost you!” You say just as he is about to walk off. “Yeah, ok fair point. What you need kid?” He asked walking towards you. “I can’t give you money though! I have a cigarette?” He said jokingly. “I’m 10 and a half! Plus I don’t want money.” You say with a hand on your hip. “So what do yo-I need something to eat!” You cut him off. “Oh um ok I normally get a sandwich from a soup kitchen but they shut down” he signed putting down a tier and holding out his hand for you to shake. “I’ll share what I can get from this. Ok?” He asked “yes! Oh I’m y/n, y/n L/n” you say “nice to meet you y/n I’m Jason Todd but…around here I go by jay, you should figure out a new name as well it’s safer like idk umm maybe Jen ?” “Ok sure jen and jay sounds cool!”
after around three years you got to know him better and became his closest friend and had maybe kissed once or twice. But then he disappeared. Vanished. Like he was never there. Only a week after Jason’s disappearance you were descoverd and put into foster homes but avenchualy you met the Kent’s. Thay already had a son Conner and he instantly saw you as his baby sister. When you found out that your foster father was the superman you begged him to let you train to become his sidekick along side Conner! And one day he agreed! You were over the moon you may not of had powers but you were one heck of an engineer you had made rocket boots so you could keep up with your brother and dad and not to mention a total badass when it came to hand to hand combat. You were 14 when Bruce Wayne came to your home to ask you to enter the titans who really needed an engineer. “Can I? Please dad please?!” You practically begged him “oh god fine but Bruce if I come round and see her with a fucking stab wound, she comes home!” Clark made it very clear on that but the next thing you know you’re in the elevator with your dad and Bruce by your sides. When you step out every one is in the living room watching some murder mystery movie or something like that. “Everyone I would like you to meet y/n L/n - Kent.” Bruce said as he patted your shoulder. “Ok I got to go be careful n/n” Clark said as he kissed your forehead before leaving. “Hi everyone I’m your new engineer.” You say as everyone comes to meet you expect one a black haired blue eyed teen still sat watching the tv. “Omg hi I’m Rachael finally more teenage girls!” You smile at the girl and everyone comes to say hi and greets you. “Jason.” Bruce calls out “come and introduce yourself”. “No I’m good thanks B much rather be here right now there about to enter crime alley!” Said the boy. You recognise the name Jason and his attitude towards everyone it was all familiar like you knew him from your childhood but didn’t know were. Dick when over and turned of the Tv to get Jason’s attention “what the hell dickhead!?” He said standing up. “Jason we all know you like crime alley but come meet new kid” they both walked over “hi I’m y/n L/n - Kent nice to meet you” you said “Jason Todd good to meet-wait L/n?” He asked you like he had remembered something. “Um yeah that’s me formally L/n now L/n - Kent” you said trying to explain you weren’t born a Kent. “No you’re what…Jen? That’s your nickname right? Jen?” He asked “yes it is- holy shit jay!?” You responded as he pulled you into a hug “I never thought I’d see you again!” Jason said still hugging you “um what is going on?” Asked gar “yeah not trying to reck the mood but do you know echother?” Kory asked “um yeah we dated in crime alley… speaking of which” you said pushing Jason off you. “Where the hell did you go? You just left me i when to bye us some sandwiches and when I get back you we’re gone!” You said still holding his shoulder’s “I know I know Ieft you and I’m so sorry but um can we talk about this somewhere that isn’t in font of my dad?” He said with that stupid voice he used when you argued back a crime alley.
When everyone was getting ready for bed later you Hurd somebody knock on your door you opened it to see Jason “hay babe can we talk?” You pulled him in pining him against the wall. “Don’t you ‘babe’ me, you left that is by far the opposite of being a good boyfriend!”you said you were about to carry on yelling at Jason but just as you opened your mouth he kissed you and you couldn’t help but kiss him back because in all truth no matter how angry you were at him you couldn’t help but miss how he kissed you, how he used to play with your hair after you had nightmares or when he would play a old music tape on his VHS player that you when both dance and sing along to you had missed everything about him and in all honesty so did he.

Caving In [14]
Pairing: Gar Logan x Fem!Powered!Reader, Jason Todd x Fem!Powered!Reader
Words: 7,539
Chapter Warnings: Swearing, angst, depression (canon, Jason), the roof scene is in this chapter and reader is the one who finds him so, the Titans being assholes, mentions of a burn
Summary: ❝Tell me Atlas: What is heavier, The world or its people’s hearts?❞ You never expected your life to end up this way, turned upside down by an infamous Gotham villain. It’s been a living hell, every single day, until Dick Grayson brings you to Titans tower where you meet Gar Logan and Jason Todd.
A/N: So, I finished writing the rest of this book and have started the next one which I also have had almost entirely plotted out this whole time and I’m excited lol I am easily motivated to post more often when I get feedback 😂 You can add yourself to the tag list below, ask me to be tagged, or you can follow my library blog @jasntoddslibrary and turn on notifications if you prefer that!!

As the morning goes by, you and Gar spend most of it in the living room. You ate your breakfast together, far earlier than ever intended but it was kind of nice because it was just the two of you. The rest of the Titans were still asleep and Jason only came by to pluck a pancake off of your plate before going back to his room. You and Gar do spend enough time alone but not having anyone else up, besides Jason, is really nice. You just get to be around each other without knowing that someone is going to interrupt or you'll have some type of training session to get to. It's nice and comforting.
One by one, the Titans get up, Dick being the first one and he's surprised to see the two of you awake and in the living room so early, especially you. You’re not an early riser. He doesn't ask questions though and hopes it's because you had trouble sleeping and not because you and/or Jason were up to something that Gar had to talk you out of. He just lets you be while you and Gar have a rewatch of The Walking Dead.
"I'd totally survive the apocalypse." You let out a sigh as you turn on the fifth episode.
Gar lets out a laugh beside you. "You could survive anything at this point."
"Right? Probably don't even have to try." You turn to face Gar. "Okay, if the apocalypse happens," You start and Gar raises his brows at you, intrigued where this is going. "Do you think it'll be like Walking Dead, Zombieland, The Last Of Us, or Love and Monsters?"
Gar lets out a breath, looking to the ceiling before looking back to you. He's definitely thought about this. "Walking Dead or The Last Of Us, both of those seem realistic."
You let out a booming laugh. "True! That would be the most likely scenario, even in a world with metahumans."
"It's also better than Zombieland zombies that can run."
"I know! That makes the whole thing a bit more terrifying." You shake your head. "But, I hope we end up with Love and Monsters because I mean, giant animals."
"That would be ideal." Gar gestures towards himself.
"A green tiger would be very normal."
"Exactly!"
Your laughter subsides and you fall into a comfortable silence. Gar resituates and guilt eats away at your bones. He winces when he moves and you figure it's because his side hurts. You swear you'll be apologizing for it every single day until you both die. You’re very grateful for him though because he is very understanding of it. You think most people would have dropped you, wanted nothing to do with you, and wouldn't trust you anymore. But, not Gar. You’ve already apologized several times since it happened and Gar has been telling you that it's okay and he's okay with a kind smile. You’ve said it before and you'll probably always think it, Gar is unfathomably kind.
"Are you sure you're okay?" You ask, guilt coating your words.
"I'm positive." Gar chuckles softly. "I'm fine."
You nod softly. "I'm still really fucking sorry."
"It's okay." Gar urges you before taking a drink of the Gatorade. "It was an accident."
"I know." You let out a sigh. "But, I'll probably be trying to make it up to you for...the rest of our lives." You laugh softly.
"You don't have to. Rachel nearly took my hand off and I'm fine."
"She...what?" You pause.
Rachel even accidentally attacking Jason makes sense. Jason pushes her buttons more than anyone so if she were going to snap, it would be on Jason. But Gar? What could Gar have possibly done?
"Yeah, I woke her up when you guys got kidnapped. Her cloud of razor blades attacked me."
"Okay, that's not fair. How are you the one getting hurt by us?" You groan. "I'm really sorry and I'm sorry I didn't know."
You were a little preoccupied with being kidnapped and tortured and then nearly dying and nearly losing Jason. You not noticing is excusable but that doesn’t stop you from feeling guilty about it. Gar was still hurt and you should have noticed. Gar would have noticed if the roles were reversed.
"You were kidnapped and then dropped from a skyscraper. I think not knowing is acceptable." Gar chuckles.
"Yeah, that's true." You shrug a shoulder. "Still, I'm sorry." You scrunch your nose. "So, whatever you need, let me know and I will get the thing." You declare, your voice confident.
"You're not gonna budge on that, are you?"
"Nope." You let out a laugh.
Your conversation gets interrupted by an alert coming from the intercom system. The two of you look at each other with confused expressions before getting up to see who's at the door. Everyone you both know is already at the tower, besides Dick, he left out of nowhere, but he doesn't need the intercom system to come up.
When Gar hits the button for the video and sound feeds on the intercom, you both see a woman with strawberry blonde hair looking a little panicked.
“My name is Eve Watson and I’m looking for someone who I think might be here.” She says, voice panicky and rushed.
You give Gar a shrug as he looks to you.
“Maybe you should go get Kory.” Gar whispers and you nod before running off to get Kory.
Someone showing up, in general, seems a little weird. You’ve been at the tower for three months and no one besides Uber Eats drivers ever show up at the tower. But, somehow this random woman knew you had weird flying guy? That seems a little off.
You find Kory in the room with the mystery guy, talking with him while he’s still unconscious.
“Uh…Kory?”
“Hmm?” Kory looks over to you. “What’s going on?”
“There’s some woman here?” You question. “Gar is talking to her through the intercom. She says her name is Eve Watson and she thinks she’s looking for someone here.” You look from Kory to the mystery guy before looking back to Kory.
“Okay.” Kory nods carefully as she gets up. “Let’s go then.”
Kory and you make your way back down the hall and back to Gar.
“Is there someone named Conner there?” You and Kory hear Eve say through the intercom just as you approach.
“Let her up.” Kory says and Gar takes a second look at Kory, almost to be unsure about it but he does as told.
The woman comes up through the elevator, Gar, you, and Kory waiting for her to come up. When she does, she has a white dog with pointy ears walking beside her. It’s in that moment, you trust her.
You’ve always wanted a dog but your mom would never let you get one. They’re a big responsibility and you didn’t have a lot of money. With your mom being a vet, it always seemed strange you didn’t have a pet. You understood the reasoning but it did not stop you from asking every birthday for a dog. But, now, there is a dog right in front of you and you haven’t been able to pet a dog since you were uprooted from Gotham. This is the best thing that’s happened in two weeks.
“She has a dog.” You whisper to Gar.
Gar chuckles softly. “She said the dog lead her here?”
“Oh, so a smart dog.” You smile almost visibility vibrating next to him.
“Are you okay?”
“Love dogs.”
“You think we have Conner?” Kory asks.
“It sounds crazy, but the dog led me here.” Eve explains. “Tall, dark hair, looks like Superman.” Even lets out a sigh.
“Come with me.” Kory jerks her head towards the hallway.
Your smile falls as you watch the dog follow the women down the hallway and Gar lets out a laugh.
“Why don’t you go with them? I was gonna take a nap anyway.”
“Are you sure? We could finish--”
“Go see if you can pet the dog.” Gar continues to laugh. “I’ll catch up later, wake me up before they leave though. I also want to meet the dog.” Gar beams and you laughs, nodding quickly before darting down the hallway.
You follow the women to Conner’s room, Kory noticing you. Kory doesn’t say anything though, figuring maybe you want to offer some help. After what happened with Deathstroke, Kory is willing to let you hang around for right now if you want to help. While Kory agrees that allowing any of the new Titans to go after Dr. Light would have been a bad idea, you sympathizes with you and Jason.
You reach the room and Eve sits down on the bed beside the mystery guy who’s still unconscious. The dog sits on the floor beside Eve and while the women talk, you stick your hand out for the dog to sniff you. The dog doesn’t seem bothered so you sit on the floor and cautiously pet his head. A giant smile plasters itself across your face as you pet the dog, now listening to the women talk about how Eve created Conner and how he ended up here. She goes on about how he’s going to die unless they can bring the sun directly to Conner. But, this is Kory. So, she has an idea and goes off to grab Rachel.
“So, you like….created him?” You ask, still petting the dog.
“Yeah.” Eve lets out a sigh.
“That’s pretty cool.” You state.
“It’s dangerous.”
“Yeah,” You sigh. “Having powers in a world like this seems to be. But, like, he’s half Superman and Kory will fix him so…pretty cool.” You nod your head. “What’s his name?”
“The dog?” Eve asks and you nods excitedly. “Krypto.”
“Krypto.” You smile looking at the dog. “I love dogs. Is it okay that I’m petting him? He didn’t seem to mind and you were talking.”
“Yeah, it’s okay.” Eve laughs softly.
“Hey, uh, you know, Conner saved my best friend.” You explain.
“He did? How?”
You shrug. “Dunno, exactly, I was dangling for my life but from what I’ve heard firsthand and what everyone else said, my friend was falling from a fifteen-story skyscraper and Conner came out of nowhere, jumped on a car and caught him mid-air.” Eve watches you carefully. “Look, I’m just saying you feel guilty and shit but had you found him earlier, it’s possible my friend would have died so I don’t think you should feel guilty about it.”
“He could die and that’s my fault. I created him and didn’t help enough.”
“No, you said that you helped him escape. They were gonna use him as a weapon, probably. You helped him and Kory is gonna save him. She’s a badass, trust me. So, you did good.” You offer her a kind smile.
“Thank you.” Eve says softly before looking back to Conner.
After a few minutes, Kory comes back with Rachel and she directs you, Eve, and Krypto to wait outside of the room. You sit right back down with Krypto, petting him while Kory gets Conner out of the bed and holds him up. She warns you it might get a little bit warm before asking Rachel if she’s ready. Rachel is a little uncertain and so are you.
Rachel has a hard time controlling her powers and you don’t really know why Kory trusts her so much to keep them in check right now. But, you trust Kory so there has to be a reason. Rachel uses her powers and her black and purple smoke surrounds Kory and Conner while Kory turns into a ball of fire. Your jaw nearly hits the floor as you watch.
“What…the…fuck.” You mutter and Eve has the same expression. “Sick.” You’re awestruck look turns into one of amazement and a giant smile comes to your face.
When Rachel brings her power back in, Kory stops and Conner is awake again. This definitely goes down in one of the coolest things you’ve ever witnessed and you find yourself having a little more respect for Rachel. Rachel always spoke so highly of Kory and maybe this is one of the reasons. Kory believes in Rachel enough to trust her to use her powers and not kill her. Not that you think Rachel could but it’s the trust that’s there and maybe that’s the whole issue with the tower right now. You, Gar, and Jason trust each other. But, Jason and you don’t trust Dick very much. Rachel doesn’t trust Jason and you think she doesn’t trust you very much because of your close proximity to Jason. The only person everyone collectively trusts is Gar but that doesn’t make for a very good team and you wonders if the Titans will ever work because of that.
Kory, Rachel, and you leave Eve, Conner, and Krypto to themselves, going your separate ways so they can talk. You head towards Gar’s room to tell him what just happened but his door is still shut and you know if he were awake, the door would be open. After last night, you do not want to wake him up so, you head two doors down to Jason’s room. You knock but then open the door, finding Jason standing in front of his windows, just looking out.
“Jay?” You call but he doesn’t even move. You walk beside him, looking from his eyes to the windows and then back to him. “Jason?” You wave your hand in front of his face and that seems to break him out f his trance.
“Fuck, yeah?” Jason jumps, spinning to you.
“You alright?” You ask, brows furrowed and the excitement you just felt vanishes and you worry about your best friend again.
“Yeah, what?” Jason snips and you narrows your eyes.
“You were just standing here…looking at the window?”
“You got a problem with that or something?” Jason snips again.
“Oh, snippy today.” You roll your eyes and walk over to one of his chairs, Jason shaking his head in confusion.
“Sure, make yourself comfortable.”
“I usually do.” You chortle. “Wanna know what just happened?” You ask, dropping the conversation about him because he doesn’t want to talk about it and you’re not gonna push him. Not today because maybe you owe him that much for last night.
Jason sighs and turns to face you. “Sure?”
“So, some woman shows up because of the guy that saved you and turns out, dude is named Conner and he is half fucking Superman and Lex Luther.” Your eyes nearly bug out of your head and Jason’s eyes widen.
“You’re fucking lying.”
“I could not make this shit up!” You exclaim. “So, she shows up and she’s got this dog with her who’s really cute. I got to pet him.” You beam and Jason finds it cute that you got sidetracked by the dog not the whole Superman and Lex Luthor thing. “So, in order to wake up Conner, Kory grabbed Rachel and turned into a ball of fire while holding Conner and Rachel used her powers to like keep it contained.” You ramble. “I know you don’t like Rachel or her powers but dude, it was the coolest shit I have ever seen.” You beam. “And Conner’s awake. Like, it worked.”
“He’s awake? From that?”
“Yeah, I guess it was something with kryptonite, that’s what he was shot with.” You explain.
“That’s…”
“Sick, right?” You ask.
“Yeah, that’s fucking sick. So, a ball of fire just wakes him up from a coma?”
“Guess so.” You laugh. “And there’s a dog.”
“You said that.” Jason chortles. “Didn’t realize you were a dog person?”
“Do I seem like a cat person to you?” You quip.
Jason laughs. “You're into Gar who turns into a fucking tiger.”
You pause before narrowing your eyes. "Yeah, but that's different. Tigers are not house cats." You hold your up and Jason shake his head at you. “So, it was super cool and I had to tell someone about it.”
“Gar not wanting to listen?” Jason quips.
“He’s napping, after last night I figured I’d let him nap.” You explain.
Jason nods just once. “How’d it go? After I left my own fucking room for you guys.”
Jason mostly asks because he wants to know if you both actually talked about your feelings or if you backed out of it. He figured Gar wouldn’t but he thought maybe you would. You didn’t seem too confident in your answer to Jason last night. You back out of a lot of the games you two play so he thought maybe you’d back out of telling Gar. He doesn’t hope for that though.
“Uh..." You furrow your brows. "It went, I guess. He's not mad at me or anything. He's being understanding, ya know?” You smile shyly.
"Did you tell him?" Jason asks, more or less digging for answers.
You pause for just a second, thinking about playing the game. But, then you think about how that would be unfair. You both made your decisions.
"No..." You let out a scoff. "It did not seem like the right time and..." You shrug, hiding more of the reason because you’d not about to tell Jason the reason you didn't tell Gar is because you like him. "I don't want him to feel obligated to tell me the same thing because I said it. I'll tell him eventually." You shrug it off and turn the question back to him. “You’ve been hanging out with Rose a lot…?” You question.
Jason gains a goofy grin. “She kissed me last night.” Jason announces.
“She what?” You nearly yell and you can feel the burning start in the very pit of your stomach. Definitely not jealousy.
Jason shrugs. “Yeah,” He has this cocky smile as he licks his lips.
You don’t need to know that Rose kissed him and then Jason put a stop to it like how he did with you last week. You don’t need to know that little bit of information.
“You really like her?” You ask, the slightest bit of snark in your voice that Jason absolutely catches.
Jason shrugs again. “Think so.” Jason laughs softly because he can’t have you. But, he likes Rose enough. He could like her more if he gave her a fair shot. Rose is different. Jason can’t break or hurt her. Deathstroke took care of that. And Gar isn’t into Rose.
“Good, I hope she makes you happy. She’s pretty cool.” Your words taste sour on your tongue but you swallow your pride anyway. You do want him to be happy. Jason deserves to be happy.
“Yeah, thanks.” Jason chuckles softly. “She got mad though, like right after.”
“What, why? You’re not that bad of a kisser.” You tease him, trying your best to brush it off.
“Shut the fuck up.” Jason groans, but there's still a hint of his cocky grin pulling at his lips. “I borrowed Dick’s records, he had one with her brother’s name on it. She freaked out on me.” The smirk falls as he shakes his head, brows knitted together.
“That’s weird.” Your brows furrow. “Have you talked to her about it?”
“Told her I didn’t know about it, think we’re alright now. But I didn’t even know she had a brother.”
“Seems getting information out of her is like getting information out you. Pulling teeth.” You chuckle softly. “I don’t know that is weird though.”
“Yeah.” Jason lets out a sigh but before either of you can continue the conversation, Rachel comes barging in.
Rachel storms right up to Jason and starts yelling. “How fucked up are you?” She yells, your eyes widen. “All you do is give people a reason to hate you!”
Jason just stares at her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“The crosses on my mirror!”
“Still don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” Jason’s voice is flat but Rachel doesn’t believe him.
Her eyes turn red as she shoves his shoulder. “Don’t fucking lie to me!” Her voice is lower and freaky with the shove.
“What the fuck?” You jump up from your seat on his chair, moving to stand in between them. "Leave him alone." You grit your teeth and you don't want to do this today. Why is she even blaming Jason?
Jason pauses for a second. He's not going to stand here and be blamed for something he didn't even do. He's been in his room since he got done training two hours ago. “I’m sick of this shit.” Jason mutters, grabbing his jacket and storming out of the room.
“Literally, what the fuck, Rachel?” You stare at her, fists balled at your sides but just for a second before you follow Jason, Rachel right behind you.
You’re questioning the universe right about now. You desperately want to know why either of you can’t seem to catch a fucking break. Seriously, what could either of you have possibly done to piss the universe off so badly? Especially Jason. He actually hasn’t done a single thing and yet he keeps getting dealt these hands and now Rachel is jumping down his throat. It’s ridiculous.
You and Rachel follow Jason into the living area where Dawn, Hank, and Kory are.
“Don’t fucking walk away from me!” Rachel screams past you.
“SHUT UP!” You scream, trying to catch up to Jason.
“Woah, hey, what’s happening?” Dawn asks from her seat at the snack bar.
“Jason drew crucifixes all over my mirror!” Rachel points her finger at Jason standing ten feet away from him while you’re smack in the middle as you all come to a halt.
“Bullshit!” Jason looks at Rachel.
“Jason, it’s okay if you’re angry.” Dawn says as she approaches the three of you.
“I didn’t do shit, okay?” Jason’s voice sounds desperate this time. “Look, don’t blame me for her voodoo issues.” Jason says as Donna walks in from behind him.
“What’s up with all the drama?” Donna asks as she stands next to Dawn.
“Someone drew crosses on Rachel’s mirror and she thinks Jason did it.” Dawn explains keeping her voice kind and calm as usual.
“I know he did it.” Rachel declares.
“No, he didn’t, Rachel!” You interject. “You’ve just got fucking problems with him so you’re first fucking response is to blame him.” You roll your eyes and cross your arms.
“Cute idea with the Bourbon bottle.” Hank starts, making his way towards the older women. “Not my type though. I’m more of a Sour Mash guy.” Hanks says, this time Jason and you looking at him with confusion having no idea what he’s even talking about. “You ever go into my room and pull that shit again, I’ll forget what team you’re on.”
“Why Jason?” Donna asks.
You let out a huff. You can’t believe you’re listening to them blame him for absolutely no reason. And when you look to Jason, he looks completely heartbroken and devastated. He has no idea what they’re even talking about. You don't think you'll forgive any of them for the look on Jason's face right now. And the fact none of them even see it, makes the whole thing that much worse.
“I don’t know what happened, guys but I-I didn’t do it.” Jason says, his voice defeated. You’ve never heard him stutter before.
“What about the picture of Elis?” Dawn asks.
“The orange soda bottle?” Donna asks, everyone pointing fingers at Jason.
“He did it to you guys, too?” Rachel asks.
“Fuck this.” Jason huffs, ready to leave the conversation.
“Hey,” Hank yells. “We’re not done here, kid.”
“You people are insane!” Jason yells, his eyes turning glossy. “I’d rather be with Deathstroke than you assholes.” Jason pauses and you can see his heart literally breaking. “You guys think everything is my fault.”
There it is. He can’t do it anymore. Even though he didn’t do anything, it’s still somehow his fault. He didn’t mean for the Deathstroke thing to happen. It was an accident and he’s the one that suffering the consequences but they’re all blaming him. They’re blaming him for this stuff he doesn’t even understand. What would an orange pop have to do with anything? The Titans have been on edge this whole time and Jason’s beginning to think it’s him. Maybe if he weren’t around, the Titans would be fine. Maybe they would all get along. They definitely would not be having this argument right now. All of this is his fault and he can’t do it anymore.
“Why is that?” You snap your attention to the older Titans and position yourself to be standing with your back towards Jason, drawing your own line in the sand. “He clearly didn’t fucking do it and none of you even suspected him until Rachel decided to fucking lose it.”
“Because I know he did it!” Rachel screams.
“Why would he do it, Rachel?” You screams over her. You’re going to lose your mind, you can feel it.
“He hates me, Y/n! Unless you’re too blind to see that!”
“You almost fucking killed him! Of course, he hates you!” You fight back, catching Rachel off guard. You will throw her under the bus. She’s gonna throw Jason under the bus, you’ll the same to her.
“You did what?” Kory asks.
“Yeah? In training, she lost fucking control and almost fucking killed him. Lifted him ten feet into the air, aimed a bunch of swords at him.”
“He hit me when I was down!”
“We were all blindfolded for fuck's sake! He didn't even hit you that hard!” It's in this moment, you’re positive Jason has always been right about Rachel because this is actual insanity.
Gar comes from one of the hallways looking exhausted. “Can’t a guy get some sleep?” His voice is drowsy and you glance to him.
“No, because everyone in the tower has literally lost their damn minds! They’re blaming Jason for some fucking bullshit!” You throw your arm out towards the older Titans.
“You’re always on his side!” Rachel screams.
“Someone has to be, Rachel! Clearly, none of you are gonna actually ask him if he did it. You’re all just pointing fucking fingers like a bunch of children.” You look at the supposed adults surrounding you. “Hey, uh, right, so how did Jason do it when I was like….with him? Do you think he ran out of his room the second Kory came to get you just do that? That's fucking stupid!"
“He's the only one that would have done it!" Rachel argues.
You laugh. How can anyone be taking this seriously right now? “But he wouldn't even do it! I know he didn't do it! He was barely fucking awake when I walked into his room! How would he have done it?!” You tell a little bit of lie. It's not that he was asleep but he was kind of in a trance when you walked in. Regardless, you know it wasn't Jason. He wouldn't mess with Rachel like that and the more you think about it, the more you’re realizing that almost every single one of their fights has been caused by Rachel.
“We aren’t pointing our fingers at him.” Dawn says calmly.
“Hank is! Rachel is! You asked him about the picture of Elis and you,” You face Donna. “Asked about a pop? How the fuck would he know any of that!? Jason’s right, you’re all fucking insane! You all take down these shitty fucking people with evidence but when it comes to your own, you don’t need evidence to point the finger! What the hell is that about!?”
“Jason is an asshole!” Rachel yells.
“He is! But he isn’t a mind games kind of asshole! And being an asshole doesn't justify being blamed for some bullshit he very clearly did not do! He’s got more of a fucking problem with Dick and Dick is the only one not experiencing this weird shit, isn’t that weird? What the hell is wrong with you guys?” You scoff.
The anger bubbles through your entire body. Every inch of you feels like it's on fire. It's disgusting and appalling that these supposed heroes can blame Jason for this. How do they not see that he's struggling? How have they not noticed he's all but sleeping in the training room and skipping dinner? You know you cannot be the only to have noticed. Gar has. They should notice. They're supposed to be looking out for you four, not making false accusations with no proof or even a motive. It's not right and it's not fair. Jason deserves better than all of them.
“Y/n.” Gar warns softly as your hands start to glow.
“No! Fuck that! Are you all fucking blind? Are Gar and me the only fucking people noticing that he is really fucking struggling right now? And all of you are going to be making it worse! He is practically living in the training room, he’s barely eating, and he’s not sleeping. I know you guys are self-absorbed and for heroes, that’s weird, too but you guys have had to have noticed right?”
The room goes silent. The only one who has noticed is Kory and she isn’t accusing Jason of anything. You can feel the burning start behind your eyes with the silence of the room. This is the most unbelievable thing you’ve ever witnessed and been a part of. How have they not noticed? It's so blatantly obvious and none of them even care. It's cruel.
“Wow.” You nod your head with a scoff. “Good work, team. Good work looking after your own.” You grit your teeth and you can’t believe these people consider themselves heroes. “You know, you get kidnapped, tortured, and then dropped from a skyscraper and let me know how that treats your psyche. He didn’t fucking do it and it’s disgusting you all even think he did.”
“Who else did it then, kid?” Hank questions, crossing his arms.
“I don’t know but it wasn’t him. I know him better than all of you. It wasn’t him, Hank.” You’re nearly whining, practically pleading with them to believe you.
“He drew the crosses on my mirror, no one else hats me.” Rachel declares.
“Okay, let me break this down because you're clearly not using your brain. Mental manipulation works best when the person doing it, lets you believe you’re on the same side. If you were on opposing sides, it’s easier to see through the bullshit. Jason and you are not on the same side, ever. So, why would it be him? Again, he isn’t the mental manipulation type. The closest he gets to it is just talking and talking and talking until you get annoyed.”
“We know it wasn’t Rachel.” Donna states. “Or Gar.”
“It wasn’t Dick.” Dawn chimes in.
“How do you know!? He’s been acting fucking weird as shit lately, too!”
Dick's been kind of down and out lately. He's been checking around the tower and you swear you overheard him talking to himself the other night. Dick seems like he's also losing it. But, again, apparently, the only people who notice are you and Gar. For people who are supposed to be observant, they all suck at it.
“Dick wouldn’t do that.” Hank defends.
“Right, so I should believe Dick wouldn’t do it because you say so but you won’t believe that Jason didn’t do it because I say so. Great reasoning there, Hank.” You gives Hank a sarcastic thumbs-up.
“Hey, watch who you’re talking to.”
“Yeah? The fuck you gonna do about it? I’ve been held captive twice and once was with Deathstroke, I’m not fucking afraid of you.” You scoff at him. “Gonna forget what team I’m on, too?”
“Y/n, come on.” Gar pleads with you.
“This is fucking bullshit and I know you know it.” You look over at him before looking back to the older Titans. “What did he do that is so bad that you guys hate him that much?” Your voice breaks with the question because you can’t imagine him doing anything. You can’t figure out why no one sees him the way you do. Or why none of them want to.
Just as Rachel is about to fight you, the elevator opens and all of you look over, seeing Dick look a little spazzed out.
“He’s here.” Dick whispers as if he’s just cracked some sort of code. “In the tower. Deathstroke’s here in the tower.” Dick explains. “He took pictures of all of us.”
You would very much, also, like to be back with Deathstroke. At least the guy was a little more straightforward than these people. Deathstroke had a reason for the madness. It wasn't a good reason but it was a reason. Meanwhile, the Titans have nothing and Dick had officially lost his mind.
“Dick…talk to me, what’s with the gun?” Hank asks, pulling everyone’s attention to the gun in Dick’s hand.
It’s this moment that confirms to you that everyone in the tower has lost their minds. Deathstroke is also completely insane but you and Jason were tortured by him and even you two aren’t that out of your minds. You aren’t sure what’s up with the Titans, but at this point, you don’t even wanna know. Instead, you figure you’ll use this time to grab Jason and try to avoid the other Titans. But, you look around and he’s gone.
“Fuck.” You let out an exasperated sigh, actively pulling attention back on you. “Shit.” Your eyes widen and the panic sets in. Jason isn’t doing well mentally and now you’re scared for what he’s going to do. Everyone blames him. Everyone hates him. He wants to be with Deathstroke over these people.
“Y/n?” Gar asks, seeing the panic written across your entire body as you approach him.
“Check the training room for Jason.” You rush as you dart the other way and everyone is left confused as to what you could be in a hurry for.
You head to his room first and he isn't there. You don't think he would go to the training room, it's too exposed. But, Jason keeps falling in his dreams and he has a thing for suffering. If it were you, you'd go to the roof so that's where you go. If Jason would rather be with Deathstroke, the answer would be the roof. He’s terrified and you can see it. He has nightmares about falling so of course, that would be his way out. To him, it’s going to be easy and accessible and no one even noticed he was gone.
You run towards the roof door, barging through it and the door flies open. Your heart sinks as you sees Jason standing on the ledge, looking straight ahead. Your feet come to a complete stop and you swear you never thought you’d have to talk someone down from this. And you hate that he even feels this way. He deserves so much better. But, you have to swallow the lump that’s forming in your throat and walk over to him.
“Jay?” You call quietly, walking carefully as if the roof is a lake covered in thin ice. Any wrong step would send you both into freezing waters.
“They all hate me.” Jason’s voice is so small and it breaks a part of you.
“They fucking suck, Jason.” You state, trying to make your voice sound like it’s not about to crack.
“It’s all my fault.”
“It’s not your fault.” You hold your voice steady as you close the distance toward the ledge. “None of this is your fault.” You state strongly. “Cam you please get down?”
“Rachel blamed me first. Maybe if I didn’t tell her to get checked by a priest.” Jason lets out a breath, ignoring the request. He swears everyone’s lives would be better if he wasn’t a part it anymore.
You take a step close to the ledge, looking over it and you feel yourself grow nauseous. You’re sick and tired of these heights but this is Jason. You look up to him and with shaky hands, you put your hands on the ledge and lift yourself up. You take a seat, letting your legs dangle as you have a death grip on the ledge. Jason glances to you with just his eyes, daring to not move his head. You’re never going to let Jason be alone in any of this. If he’s going to stand on the edge, you’re gonna be right there with him. He will never be alone if you have anything to say about it.
“Her dad possessed you, traumatized you. That wasn’t her fault, but it was her responsibility to apologize for it and listen to you about it. That’s not on you, Jay.”
“I just keep fucking up.” His voice quivers as he moves his foot forward and you nearly break.
“Jason,” You rush his name. “I am begging you not to walk off this roof.” You keep your attention on Jason and that’s all you can focus on. You can’t fucking lose him. “It’s not your fault. You’re not fucking it up. Okay? This is on them. You’re just trying to help.”
“I keep falling.” Jason’s voice quivers again. “It won’t stop.” Jason sucks in a breath and now you know why he keeps standing at his windows like that. He’s just reliving it over and over and over.
“Jason, it’s gonna be okay.” You keep your voice soft and gentle as you keep your stare forward.
Jason doesn’t know how you can even say that. It doesn’t feel like it’s going to be okay. It’s been a week and it feels like it happened yesterday. It still feels like he’s on the window washing crane. The Titans hate him for no reason. He’s never done anything to make them hate him. That’s not going to be okay and it’s not going to get better. They’re always going to hate and they’re always going to blame him for anything they can. And it’s his fault.
This always happens. Jason pushes and pushes until people break and pull away. He doesn’t even know exactly why he does it but he does. People try to help him and it all fails. He’s a mess and maybe he’s too big of a mess to ever be fixed. He’s tired of it and he’s tired of feeling like this.
“Bruce wasn’t the first one, ya know?” Jason states. “Who tried to help me. I can make a list. Relatives, teachers, cops, Dick. Nobody's been up to the task.”
You pause and you already knew that all Jason has ever wanted is feel good enough. He sabotages. You get it because you do it, too just in different ways. But, Jason is not all bad. Jason is hard-headed and stubborn and cocky. He can be a little shit and he’s a little too snippy and sarcastic sometimes. But, if anyone bothered to get to know him, they’d know him how you know him. Which is that he’s a good friend. He’ll sacrifice his own feelings for his friends, he’s self-sacrificing, and kind, and funny. He’s charming and a geek in his own way. He’s a nerd and he deserves to be cared for. Everyone gave up way too soon.
“I am.” Your voice is quiet and you peak up at him with just your eyes, keeping your head steady and your words catch Jason off-guard. “I mean it. You know I don’t lie to you. Put that shit on me, remember? You’re not a fuck up. You deserve for people not to give up on you.”
Jason lets out a scoff because he doesn’t want to believe you. “I’ve got a poison in me.” Jason lets out a huff. “Shit spreads. It can affect even the healthiest people.”
“You don’t have a poison, Jay.” You state. “You don’t.”
“Look at what happened to you!” Jason’s eyes water further, blurring his vision slightly as his voice cracks.
“What? Deathstroke?” You scoff. “I was fucked up long before Dick brought me here, alright? Gotham, death, torture, held captive, almost murdered. Almost murdered Jerry. That’s all me, that has nothing to do with you. Deathstroke was gonna happen. If it wasn’t you coming up with the idea, it would have been me, let’s be honest.”
Jason bounces to something else. He’s finding every reason he can to keep standing here. He wants it all to be over, for the pain and the shame and the guilt to just stop. But, he doesn’t want to give up either. There are two sides of his brain playing tug of war. One of them is screaming and crying, pleading to hold a little longer while the other side is cackling and chanting to jump because everyone’s lives would be better without him in it.
“It’s happened before.” Jason starts. “I once spent two nights in juvie and four fucking people died. It follows me like a curse.”
Your brows furrow and you hate that he feels this way about himself. No one should ever feel like that. You want to get off of this roof and hunt down every single person who’s ever made Jason Todd feel like he’s a poison and he’s not good enough. You’ll fight the entire world for him.
“Were you Robin?” You ask.
Jason pauses. “Yeah.”
“Then it’s not your fault.” You let out a scoff and you really do have something again Bruce and Dick. “That’s on Bruce. He’s been Batman our entire lives. He shouldn't need a Robin. He should have been a better Batman. It’s not your fault those people died, do you hear me?”
“I just want it to stop.” Jason’s voice finally breaks and you want to break with him but you can’t.
You want to drag him off of this roof and grab him by the face, scream at him that it’s all going to be okay and that he’s good enough. That he deserves everything good to happen because he is good. There is nothing wrong with him. He is worth the effort. But, you’re so scared that if you make any move towards him, he’ll lose it entirely. You would do anything to get his pain to stop.
“It’s not just you, Jay.” Your voice is soft. “Look, you know I have nightmares, too about all of it. It’s not just you and as long as I’m alive, it’ll never be just you. As long as I’m alive, you will never be alone in this shit.”
“What?”
“If I’m alive, you will never be alone. You won’t go through that shit alone because I’d follow you into the dark if you asked me to. You’re my best friend in the whole world and...I care more about you than I do about almost anyone I have ever met. I’d do anything in the world if you asked me to. You and me. Always.” You pause, looking behind you to see Dick standing a few feet away. “I mean it. You’re not a fuck up and you are not alone. Ever. Fuck, everyone else, okay? I am batshit terrified right now but I’m here with you because I care about you and I’d lose my fucking mind if I lost you. My life would be so much fucking worse without you in it.” Your words more intense and stern with every second. "Fuck them because you're not a fucking poison and you're not fucking cursed. And someone should have fucking been there for you. So, I will be. Now, get the fuck off this ledge.”
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Put it on me.” Your voice is so gentle, it nearly shatters Jason. "I will never give up on you. I will never let you do any of this alone, Jay. Please." You finally look at him with the final plea. Your eyes lock with Jason's and he make the decision. He takes a step back, stepping down from the ledge.
You follow his lead quickly, relieved over the whole situation and you feel like you can breathe again. You close the distance between you and wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him close to you. Jason buries his face into your shoulder, his arms hugging you tightly. Everything is so heavy for him. The weight of the world is drowning him and you are his life jacket.
And Dick sees the two of you and that’s when he gets it. When he gets what it means it has someone who is literally a ride or die. Dick worried about you together after Jerry. As friends, as more than friends, just being around each other. Something told Dick that would just be the beginning and the Deathstroke happened and Dick was certain he was right. But, now, he’s not sure if you’re the cause for each other’s destructive behavior.
You’re both just like that but you both get it. You understand exactly what the other is going through and how to handle it. It’s not about you causing each other to do something stupid, it’s that you both have someone who is there when you do it so you can pick up those pieces. He gets it now and he understands why he should have told the Titans about Jericho from the beginning. None of this would have happened. Jason would not have wanted to walk off this roof had he been honest. Maybe the Titans wouldn’t have disbanded. This is on him, not the two of you in front of him.
“This is my fault.” Dick speaks up, you and Jason pulling away from each other.
“Okay?” You question him, not even wanting to deal with him. This is also his fault, Jason and everything. This is on Dick.
“Deathstroke, all of this is my fault.” Dick admits.
“Yeah, I said that.” You nod your head. You’re not dealing with this. You got Jason off the ledge and would like to bring him inside and shield him from the Titans. “I’ll get Rachel or Dawn or Donna to talk you down though if you need it.” Jason looks at you, a bit surprised by the venom in your voice.
“No,” Dick shakes his head. “I owe everyone an explanation.” Dick sucks in a breath, you and Jason waiting to hear where this could possibly be going right now, of all times. “I killed Deathstroke’s son.” Dick admits.

I was going to reblog with a comment but that post is already super long. But so true ! Like the ninja assassin thing with Dick is a modern retcon something that would be a Tim Cass or Damian thing to do. But writing a flashback for an adult Dick in the 2000s would be weird. By the 1960s he was firmly in canon 18 and in college. How are you gonna go back to the era of goofy and be like this is Dick’s angsty teenage years involved getting turned into a vampire and fighting Bruce over dating Talia. It just doesn’t make sense with how Long comics keep going. 80 years of comics and he’s only what 28. Like it’s very hard to keep a consistent character when everyone wants to make Dick Jason and Bruce new characters every few decades
Absolutely!
My personal view about how they kept retconning Dick's personality as a child and his relationship with Bruce is that it's a mix of complex things and bullshit.
The complex things is yeah, Dick and Bruce had their share of problems when Dick was growing up. They did start bumping heads a lot, but it was more like "this kid is turning into a man and is starting to clash views with his father (who is already someone who's not easy to deal with)" and "that's the part where he starts to develop who he is as person" (I won't get much into that because I haven't read many comics regarding Dick transition from Robin from Batman & Robin to Robin from Titans until Nightwing in the pre-death of the family era.) than the borderline abusive and toxic relationship they started to introducing in the late 90's to early 2000's portrayals of them.
It's complex because after rebooting everything it's hard to introduce such a long and gradual process that took almost ten years of development that is Dick's emancipation not only from working with Bruce but also following his every step as boy wonder. Specially if we think about the huge fall out they had right after Jason died.
It's bullshit because they started with those retcons when we had that long and embarrassing period of Super-hero history (late 90's to early 2000's) where everyone was trying to make super-heroes popular again but following alongside with a palpable embarrassment and self-conscious shame regarding any silliness and/or whimsical side the superhero universe. Like "we're making superheroes stories but this is for adults, this ain't for children 😡😡". Nobody wanted to be the "60's Batman TV show everyone makes fun of" and everybody wanted to be Alan Moore.
We had all this writers who grow up reading "Death of the family", "The Killing Joke", "Batman Year one" add were dying to recreate the 80's dark period glory, even if they didn't had the same writing skills for that.
I mean hate the Killing Joke all you want (I know I do), it has a shit tone of good writing.
It's bullshit because everyone was still sore about how Batman turned into a joke in the 90's after that one movie and for some reason everyone blamed Robin. It's bullshit because comic books are always influenced by the popular media around them, and while 40's Batman had the American Way and American Family Values™ 🦅🦅🦅, 80's Batman has Scarface, Taxi Driver and long urban tragedies.... 90's have Die Hard and every extra power macho fantasy under the sun.
I mean... This was 90's Nightwing.
he's so big and so stupid and one day I'm gonna top h–*gunshots*
No one wanted to see "good father" Batman, hell no one wanted to see any emotional shit in comics? Emotions??? In my manly comics??? Miss me with that gay sit emotions is for girls 😡😡 I wanna see big buffy man making his enemies cry 🔥⛓️☠️💪☠️😡⛓️🪚🔧
So you reach early 2000, everyone kinda hates or is kinda embarrassed of Robin, Batman is a former shadow of the man and the father he used to be. But you still wanna introduce new readers to your character (Dick Grayson) that (for better or for worst) is loved but only by the people who already know him, you're still embarrassed of his silly origins and the whimsical part of it.
So what do you do?
Personally I think writers thought Dick had it too easy as Robin, personally I think they were obsessed about making it real, personally I think everyone was obssessed and trilled with the idea of being the next Tim Miller and making their one fresh real edge introduction of the boy wonder. Personally I think this is all the new 52 was absolutely on for the Batfamily.
Personally I believe (and this is more a optimistic take) some writers were creatively trying to tie Dick's anger issues as Nightwing to his origins as Robin.
You have this chance of one in million (at te time) to reintroduce Nightwing (reintroduce Robin), now you can make it as real as gritty and as edge as you want. You can make it Robin cool again, you can introduce in a way that will sell well the dark story you where preparing for this character. And you also can deny any father and son relationship he could had have with Bruce Wayne and keep the big beef strong man without feelings reputation that people have been manufacturing by choice into Batman from ten years by now.
And what is more dark and character building than an abusive father?
I think writers thought that making Bruce abusive towards Dick and Dick resentful towards Bruce was the best way to launch this new universe as realistic and grittier. Not only making Dick's Robin introduction (and origin) more "real" but also separating Bruce even more from a emotional and father like figure that for some reason some writers (and fans!) despised to much.
Killing so many birds with one stone might as well call yourself David from the Bible.
And they were so certain this direction would be a success that the just notice their mistake now.
Anyways... A load of bullshit.
I personally don't mind Dick's Robin having anger issues, I think it's a natural progression from his first real serious introduction from back in the 80's, I also think it adds more to his character tying up his first trauma along with a long life of others and the result of having to deal with a frustrating job (that is vigilantism is) since literally ever. I like the idea that the perfect Robin wasn't perfect all the time and he also had (and has) other side of his personality that isn't as nice or likeable as it should and that's a thing he consciously have to work on as a person since he was a child.
However I also think writers did took to far sometimes and Dick history and specially his relationship with Bruce suffered from it. And I also agree that if everyone tries to reboot, retcon and fucking "subvert" a character every fucking ten years you won't even have a fucking consistent character to begin with (gestures vaguely to Jason Todd, Deadpool and now poor fuckin Damian and their wreck of comic book history).

elbows him in the side. / @failrobin
instead of dodging out, dick uses the proximity to swing an arm around jason's shoulders. jovial, casual and proud. even though he trusted both sides of the equation with his body, mind and soul he knew it could still be a nervous venture. even now, dick thinks back to how desperately he wanted the early versions of his friends to find him COOL. " everybody, this is robin. " that still felt a bit weird to say. from 'i'm' to 'this' the switch was still a bit hefty on his tongue . a bit weighted when he thought of how the cowl had broken it to him but that was never on jason. and if he had a say in the matter maybe he'd have even given it himself. and maybe since they had time, he could do that for him now. acceptance and support, always. " robin, these are the titans. " he made a grand, gloved gesture towards the titans who had crowded into the little foyer. wally on the arm of the chair with a little wave, donna leaning on the threshold of the door, garth, gar, kori, raven, cy. all in varying degrees of superheroism and civvies. they all knew who dick grayson was, and titans tower had long since evolved from a 'co-working space' to something of a dormitory. gar was still in his black canary pajamas complimented by a very tired mid-day yawn to accentuate his point. however, reminiscent of the old days, dick and jason were still masked. if they'd made even one google search or hell, seen any news channel in the past few months their expert deduction skills could probably come down to who the new robin was, but dick was insistent on the idea of CHOICES. it was and would always be jason's choice if he wanted to be known, by anyone. maybe dick couldn't fix some of the issues that eventually broke the damn that was his run as robin, but maybe he could build a better foundation for the next. when all the hellos and waves and warm welcomes had drowned out, dick turned his focus back down to the domino by his side. "what do you say to a quick tour?"
#failrobin#there is something about how i wrote this i dont like#but the power of lil baby rob.in jason meeting the titan.s is too strong#WE POWER ON#maybe..... maybe i use my titan.s multi just the CONCEPT IS SO NICE D/C TAKE NOTES#maybe i write something better in this verse later only time will tell...#v. idk.

Kissing as a distraction
How would the batboys do it?
Dick: as Damian moves behind the counter to grab the visitor log, Dick distracts you.
“Hi,” he said with a sweet smile. You sat upright and smiled back.
“Hello. How can I help you?”
“I just wanted to say how beautiful your smile is,” he said moving closer. You flushed and looked down. “Seriously,” he said in earnest.
“You don’t go in a store to say that. What do you need?” You insisted despite the grin that wouldn’t leave your face. Behind you, Damian was on full view as he climbed a shelf. Dick frowned slightly and you looked at him confused. He moved even closer to an intimate closeness. He could see the interest on your face.
“A little kiss?” He asked. Your eyebrows rose and if your face wasn’t flushed before, you were certainly rosy now.
“A kiss? Really?” You stammered as the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen held your chin. He nodded lightly and tilted your chin up. You easily complied. He could feel your bounding pulse and if it was any other situation, he would have really enjoyed this.
“I suppose,” you finally whispered. Dick’s lips curled into a smile before he pressed them against yours. You held his arm as he kissed you before softly pulling back. His phone rang and he looked at it wistfully.
“Another time? I have to go,” he said sadly. And before you could respond, Dick was out the door and Damian safely had his papers.
“Wait,” you said and you finally noticed the crumbled paper shoved in your hand with a phone number on it causing you to smile.
————————————
Jason: you were the pretty girl that worked at the coffee shop and you just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Jason also happened to be without his Red Hood gear or a weapon more than his pocket knife.
“Jason,” you asked confused as he raced out the back of a club. He grabbed your hand to pull you along. “Wait! Where are we going?” He silently cursed when it turned into a deep end alley.
“Uhh, so here is the thing,” he mindlessly said as he frantically thought of a plan. Now you both were in danger and he still only had a damn pocket knife.
“Jason, what’s going on with you,” you asked, concerned. As far as you knew, he was the sweet literature major at Gotham U that occasionally came for a vanilla bean latte a few times a week. He realized a good distraction and hoped you wouldn’t get too mad.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,” he admitted before pulling your into a kiss. You froze for a few seconds before returning the kiss. His kiss was absolutely excellent. Jason held the sides of your face and you gripped his forearms eagerly.
The thugs looked at you both and decided that that couldn’t be their guy. No one in their right mind would make out in an alley when someone with a gun was hunting them. Jason even pushed you gently against the wall and you made a surprised moan. His tongue slid in your mouth and your mind melted a little.
When the guys were finally gone, he pulled back. You panted and stared at him. His hands didn’t leave your face.
“Wow. Okay,” you said. “Why now?”
“I’ve been meaning to do that for a while. Sorry, I should have asked first,” he said sheepishly before dropping his hands. Jason didn’t do that. You had a little smile on your face.
“I don’t know. If you hadn’t then I couldn’t do this,” you said pulling him back down for another kiss.
———————————
Tim: he’s just trying to get away from the most boring people at the gala. It doesn’t hurt that he thinks you’re super hot.
An hour talking about the economy affecting golf course values had Tim wanting to murder someone and he gently excused himself to the bathroom. After hiding in the toilet for as long a reasonably possible, Tim walked out to see the same men coming towards him. Shit.
“Mr Wayne, do you need anything,” you asked. Tim looked at you clearly dressed as waitstaff, black trousers and a white button down shirt. Your face was recognizable as probably consistent staff and Tim noted that you were quite pretty.
“Oh uhh, no. Thanks,” he said distracted. “Actually, can I kiss you?” Your eyebrows raised quickly. “Trying to avoid those guys. You know what? Nevermind... I’ll be fine-“
You cut him off with a kiss. You’d worked a few of these events and always had an eye for Tim. And when Mr Timothy Jackson Drake-Wayne asked for a kiss, you wouldn’t miss the opportunity. Tim froze for a few seconds before returning the kiss. He held your waist with one hand and the other wrapped around your upper back to hold your shoulder and pull you closer. You made a little squeaking noise but didn’t pull away. Instead you wrapped your arms around his neck.
After a little while he pulled back. Tim’s lips were puffy and his cheeks pink.
“Can I get your number?” He asked, never once caring about the scandal of a billionaire’s son kissing the waitstaff at a gala. You grinned and looked down.
“Sure,” you said before giving him your number.
“A dance?” He asked, pulling you to the floor.
———————————
Older Damian: he was on a Titan’s mission and Nightwing told him to distract you, his partner. Nightwing couldn’t have guessed that Damian’s idea was to kiss you.
“She will never agree to the harness. She hates heights,” Damian said into his comms quietly to Dick.
“She has to. It’s the only way off of the building you both got in. Distract her and strap her to you and then jump out. She can be mad later. They are coming,” Dick said. Damian sighed but agreed before walking over to you.
“How are we getting out?” You asked, looking at Damian. He didn’t respond but walked closer. He grabbed the sides of your face and kissed you. You gasped and Damian slid his tongue in your mouth before you responded, sucking on his tongue a little. Damian clipped you to him and broke the kiss. He grabbed you by the waist and jumped from the roof.
You screamed and grabbed him tightly. Damian swung over to a certain building where Dick would pick you both up in a helicopter. You were panting and looked furious.
“What the hell, Wayne?” You said, shoving him but all it did was yank you closer to him by the clip. “Undo this,” you practically growled.
“I apologize for kissing you but it was necessary for the mission,” Damian said, unclipping you. You rolled your eyes. “You would have never jumped on your own.”
“So even the kiss was fake, thanks,” you said, stepping away from him.
“No it wasn’t.”
“What?”
“It wasn’t fake,” Damian said before pulling you back in for another kiss. You responded roughly kissing him back. Almost teeth more than lips. Then you pulled away and slapped him.
“Stop kissing me without my permission,” you growled before slamming your mouth against his. Damian smirked against you while kissing back. You two violently kissed until Dick arrived with a helicopter. His eyebrows were raised as you both climbed in because that was the last thing Dick expected.

**********************************************************************
She watched the group socialize from her position in the corner; she’d never been out and open like Kori was. She’d always preferred to watch in silence, to observe…the years she spent captive, formed her mindset of watching and waiting for moments of weakness. Speaking of Kori, she watched her step into the room with Dick; their hands tightly clasped together.
Fighting a laugh, she glanced out the window, turning her attention to the waves as they crashed against the rocks below the tower. She wondered why she was here. She wasn’t a part of the Titans…not really. Her animosity towards leniency on justice put her at odds with just about everyone within the group, and especially the Justice League. Well, except for Diana; the Amazon was the only one who truly understood her reasoning.
But as for letting criminals go free? It didn’t happen. Rarely ever, did (Y/N) allow a criminal to walk away from her, and her mind drifted to the memory of her first mission with the Titans.
***
She stepped out of the smoldering hole in the warehouse wall and strode to the criminal crawling from her. Placing her foot square between his pelvis and spine, she stepped down with all her strength and listened to his spine crack under the strain. He let out a bloodcurdling scream and she rolled him over with her foot, glaring down at him, watching as he begged.
“Please!”
A white hot star-bolt formed in her hand and she raised it, speaking coldly. “The women you assaulted and killed did not want to die either.”
The man began to cry as she flung the bolt, watching his body incinerate, and turn to ash; she turned and began walking away, ignoring the concerned look from her sister, and the angry looks from her teammates.
They hadn’t even gotten five feet into the tower when Dick was on her like a beast to a fresh kill. “What the hell was that, (Y/N)?”
She glowered, warning him darkly, “Watch how you speak to me, Richard. I am not Kori. And you should believe me when I tell you that what I feel for you is nothing short of loathing. And loathing is quick to turn deadly should I be pushed.” (Y/N) turned to leave when he moved in front of her again.
“It doesn’t matter what you feel! You owe us an explanation!” He shot back.
She barked a cold laugh. “I owe you nothing, least of all an explanation.”
“You murdered him!”
(Y/N) narrowed her gaze. “And the point you are trying to make is?”
Dick threw his hands into the air. “It was wrong!”
“Was what he did to those innocent women also wrong?” she countered and he all but recoiled.
“Of course! But that doesn’t—”
“But nothing. He was a despicable criminal, and he deserved to die for his crimes.” (Y/N) turned around and began walking to the door.
“We aren’t executioners, Kiyahnd’r.” Dick admonished.
She froze in her spot and glanced over her shoulder, her eyes frosty towards them. “Perhaps not you, Richard. But you were not raped and beaten repeatedly as a young child.” Her gaze narrowed. “My justice is absolute in the face people who do the same thing that was done to me and my sisters. Never forget that.”
***
(Y/N) blinked, dragging herself from the memory; it hadn’t been long after that, that she found herself tangled in combat with the Justice League. Apparently, she had held out against them far longer than anyone ever had, managing to overpower The Flash and Martian Manhunter. She had almost defeated Batman when Wonder Woman and Superman intervened, subduing her. That was a fun day for (Y/N), and she remembered how Batman had made her concede killing people…mostly anyway.
The years had been decent to her and she came to terms with her life, even branching out into modeling like Kori did. They ruled the runways. But the “lone wolf” style she’d developed while in captivity still ruled her, and she found it increasingly hard to keep continuing the team. They had all gathered in the room, and she rose from her seat.
Immediately, the talking stopped as everyone turned to stare at her; Dick smiled at her from his seat, Kori perched herself across his thighs. “You alright, (Y/N)?” She met his eyes before moving to the table and setting down a small metal piece. It clinked and their eyes moved to it, as Dick questioned, “What’s that?”
“You know what it is, Richard.”
He glanced over, looking at the item, and took in the realization of what it was. “Your key to the tower?”
(Y/N) nodded. “As of now, I formally relinquish my role as a Titan.” Ignoring the shocked gasps and stares, she continued. “I will be leaving at dusk.” (Y/N) made her way to the door. “Thank you…and goodbye.” She didn’t wait for their replies, moving to her bedroom.
She closed the door and sat beside the window, occasionally glancing at her packed bag. (Y/N) had money saved up over the years, from odd jobs to her professional modeling career worldwide and she still had big money rolling into her bank account from other various sources. She would be alright; she just needed to find a place to live on her own and thrive.
A knock tore her from her thoughts, and she turned to the door. “Enter.” In walked Kori and Dick, and she sighed knowingly. “Delivering the parting words?”
“Kiyahnd’r…are you sure you want to leave?”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes. “Very.”
They sat down on her bed, a couple feet away, and Dick leaned forward. “You don’t have to leave, (Y/N).”
“I am aware,” she noted. “but this is something that I want to do.”
“Why Kiyahnd’r?”
(Y/N)’s eyes flitted to Kori. “Because this is not where I belong.”
“Don’t say that, (Y/N). You—”
She raised a hand. “Do not try and cushion the blow, Richard.” She rose and stared out the window. “It has been plain to see all these years that you all will never trust me.” (Y/N) glanced at Dick. “Or accept me onto your team.”
Dick went silent, and Kori nudged him. “Say something.”
“What do you want me to say? She’s kinda right.”
“Dick!”
(Y/N) stopped Kori. “Do not be angry at him, Koriand’r. Richard is right.” She paused. “I am not you Koriand’r…I allow my past to define how I live my life.” Her eyes moved to her sister’s, and a hint of sorrow crossed her tone. “I cannot let go of our pasts. It will haunt me forever, and I need to find my own path…away from this place.”
The two of them went silent, then Dick said, “If you don’t have anywhere to go…Jason’s been in need of a partner lately.”
(Y/N) scoffed. “That moronic imbecile? Certainly not.”
Dick snickered as Kori sighed. “Jason is not stupid, sister.”
“Truly? There have been a few times where he has fooled me.”
Kori sighed again, as Dick rose from the bed, moving to (Y/N). “Look…I know you think I don’t like you—”
“You do not like me.”
Dick rolled his eyes and corrected, “Wrong, Miss Know-It-All. I happen to like you very much. In fact—”
(Y/N) cut him off, turning to Kori. “Be cautious sister, you apparently have competition for Richard’s affections.” Kori and (Y/N) giggled as Dick raised his hands in exasperation.
He marched to the door with them still raised. “I give up! I came in here to wish you goodbye and good luck, and this is what I receive!” He was almost out the door when (Y/N) pulled him back, spinning him around to pull him in for a brief but heartfelt hug.
She pulled away and glanced at him. “For all you have done for me…and for all the times you have tried to help me…thank you, Richard.”
He grinned up at her and squeezed her round her middle. “See…you love me after all.”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes and picked up her bags. “Do not push it Dick. You still anger me.”
“You aren’t the first person to tell me that.” Dick shrugged.
She snorted and moved to the door, stopping and glancing at them. “And I most certainly will not be the last.”
***
The flight to Gotham City was quiet, and she remembered the first time she arrived.
***
The portal opened and she fell through it, still fighting off the Psions who followed her. They crash-landed into a building, and the rubble was lit up like the sun as she threw star-bolts at them. The fighting lasted for a few minutes, and in the end, she stood victorious among the scattered body parts. Her mind raced as she tried to remember where her sister had gone, and the next thing she realized, a Psion was on her back.
She cursed in her native tongue as it clawed at her, and gathered energy into her palm to kill it when it flew off her, landing a good distance away. She rolled to her side and coughed; a hand appeared in her vision, and she looked up to see a man in black standing over her.
His lips moved, and she knew words were coming out, but it sounded like gibberish. The hand extended towards her more, and she took it, allowing him to help her stand. He kept speaking and she rolled her eyes, reaching out and grabbing his face; she brought their lips together, and words and languages flowed through her mind.
She released him and he simply gaped at her, too stunned to move; she snorted. “Apologies. My race learns by psychophysically connecting with one another. The most effective way is through oral contact.”
“…You just learned to speak English from kissing me?”
She nodded. “Is that what you call it? English? What a strange name it is.” The corner of his mouth rose, and she stood up straight. “I am Kiyahnd’r of…well…it does not matter.” She paused. “My name is Kiyahnd’r.”
He nodded. “I’m Batman.”
***
(Y/N) felt the corners of her mouth raise at the memory; it had been a very long time since she’d thought about it, and it reminded her of how lucky she’d been to learn the languages from Bruce. Kori only received a small amount from Dick; (Y/N) had received twenty-three different dialects, all fluently. The fleeting memories lasted only so long, and the plane began to ascend, signaling her arrival.
She stepped off of the plane and made her way to the baggage claim, picking up her bag and moving to the doors when she saw a familiar man. (Y/N) stared as he walked towards her.
He stopped in front of her and smirked. “Need a ride, doll?”
She rolled her eyes. “Dick called you then.”
“Called a few hours ago saying you were leaving the Titans and coming to find me and Roy.”
(Y/N) scoffed. “I was coming to Gotham. I was not coming to see the both of you.” She glared at him.
“Sticks and stones, (Y/N).”
“Go crawl into a bush, Jason.”
His hand curled around the handle of her suitcase and he lifted it, nodding his head to the door. “Car’s outside.” Jason moved forward, and (Y/N) was left with no choice but to follow him. She watched as he put her suitcase in the trunk, then turned to her. “You hungry?”
“Are you going to cook?”
Jason paused as he was getting in the driver’s door; he looked at her, an eyebrow raised. “Do you want me to cook?”
She moved to sit in the passenger seat. “So long as you make something good.”
He grinned as he sat in the seat, starting the car. “I always make good food.”
(Y/N) let out a ‘hmpf’. “We shall see.”
***
The drive to his apartment was slow and when they arrived, the sun was setting low beyond the skyline. They climbed the stairs and entered his apartment; (Y/N) hummed. “I wasn’t sure that your apartment would be as tidy as it is. It is rather shocking.”
Jason grunted as he moved into the kitchen, pulling out pans from the cabinets. “Sorry doll, the role of messy Robin is Tim.” He paused and glanced at her. “And sometimes, Dick…but mostly Timmy.”
(Y/N) snorted and motioned to her bag. “Where should I put my things?”
Jason nodded down the hallway. “Second door on your right. I changed the sheets and cleaned it, so you should be happy.”
She said nothing and walked to the bedroom. It was a little dull for her tastes, but nothing she couldn’t fix with a trip to the department store and IKEA. She walked back out and sat at the bar, watching Jason cook for them. When he was finished, they sat out on the balcony sharing a bottle of wine.
(Y/N) swallowed it, gagging, “Earth wine is disgusting.”
“Wine’s a peculiar taste,” he snorted, taking a sip. “You have to get used to it.”
She grunted and replied, “I do not want to be used to it. It tastes like…I do not even know what it tastes like. All I know is that it is disgusting.”
“You’re just a Debbie-Downer, aren’t you, (Y/N)?”
“I do not know what that is but I can tell it is not positive.”
“Nevermind.” Jason chuckled and they lapsed into a comfortable silence, eating their dinner, and when they were finished, they climbed to the roof and watched the stars; Jason leaned over. “So, why did you leave the Titans?”
(Y/N) sighed quietly, murmuring, “I did not want to be within their company any longer.”
He eyed her. “And?”
“And I did not want to be ostracized anymore.” (Y/N) inhaled. “I am not Kori. She was accepted easily within the Titans because she is kind and sweet. But I? No…I was never one to be accepted. My attitude and stance on how I deal with criminals was not something the Titans were too keen on keeping.”
Jason listened silently, then tipped his head. “Dick told you to come find me then?”
She shrugged. “More or less.” (Y/N) glanced at him. “I assume he had an inkling that because we are so similar in our mindsets on criminals that we would get along and be able to work together.”
“Red Hood, Arsenal, and Supernova,” Jason grinned. “It’s got a great ring to it.”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes. “I regret this decision already.”
He scooted closer and slung an arm around her shoulders, ignoring the way she growled low in her throat. “Don’t be like that, doll…we’re gonna make a kick-ass team.”
(Y/N) opened her mouth to retort when a light shone in the sky; she glanced at Jason, tipping her head to it. “Well…let us go and show what a team we will make.” She rose, holding out a hand. “Shall we, Red Hood?”
Jason glanced at her hand before taking it, smirking. “Hell yeah.”

Protector (Batsis Reader) Pt. 2
"I can't believe he grounded me!" I yelled, pacing back and forth in my room back at the manor.
Alfred hadn't said anything as we got back or even as he cleaned, stitched, and wrapped my wound.
"What happened wasn't my fault, ya know?" I turned to Titus, Damian's dog, who sat on my bed. He tilted his head, seemingly confused as to why I wasn't his master. "I was just walking and it's not my fault I was kidnapped."
"Bruce is just trying to keep you safe," Dick said from my doorway. I turned to see both him and Damian standing at the door. "He's just upset that you didn't get yourself out of that situation when you could have."
"I already told you, I didn't want to reveal our identities," I protested as Damian sat on my bed next to Titus. "If he was really going to kill me, I would have teleported away, but I knew you or the Titans would save me." I felt Damian grab my hand but I ignored it.
"Just don't be too hard on him Y/n/n," Dick said. "Bruce lost someone that way before."
"What do you mean-" I felt Damian tug on my wrist. I turned to see him with a syringe with a blue liquid in it. "Stop that!" I exclaimed, yanking my hand away and swatting at him.
"Hush," Damian said, pulling my hand back, sitting me on the other side of Titus. "Grayson, tell your story."
"Before either of you, after I quit being Robin, Bruce adopted another kid he found off the street," Dick began. I felt Damian poke the syringe into my forearm. "His name was Jason Todd. Bruce made him the second Robin."
"Of course he did," I mumbled.
"But then he was kidnapped by the Joker," Dick continued, his eyes darkening. "The Joker beat him, tortured him until he was almost dead. By the time Bruce got there... it was too late." My eyes widened and I could tell Damian even looked taken aback. "Bruce blames himself. He never recovered after that night. But he still refused to kill the Joker."
"He still stuck to his code?" I questioned.
"Always has," Dick confirmed. He sighed, glancing at me. "When he got the call from Penguin, he thought he'd lose you too."
"Oh," I mumbled, pulling my legs to my chest. "I just thought he was being a helicopter parent."
"Some of it probably was," Dick chuckled. "Just remember, no matter how much he pisses us off, he does care." With that, he walked out of the room.
"What the hell did you put in me?" I hissed, pulling my wrist from Damian's grasp.
"Microtrackers," Damian answered casually. "Wayne Technology."
"What!" I exclaimed, jumping up and scrambling about, rubbing at my skin. "Get it out! Get it out! Get it out!"
"Calm down Y/L/N!" Damian said, watching as I crashed into the things in my room.
"Get it- Ow," I groaned, my wounded arm ramming into my wardrobe.
"Calm down," Damian said, standing up and dragging me back to the bed. "You have to be careful."
"Are you going to treat me like this too?" I asked as he forced me to sit. "Like a glass doll? Something that could shatter at any moment?"
Damian's eyes softened, which was a sight to behold. "I lost my grandfather, I would prefer not to lose a sister, even if we do not share blood," he said.
I jumped up, wrapping my arms around the shorter boy's neck. He stiffened, patting my back awkwardly. "You're not a horrible brother," I admitted, pulling away.
"And you are not an awful sister," Damian said, his face serious. He cleared his throat. "Get some rest, just because you are injured does not mean I shall go easy on you in training."
"I wasn't counting on it," I chuckled.
Damian nodded before leaving the room. "Titus," he said. Titus jumped up, rushing toward his master.
Damian could be a little demon child but he had his moments.

Titans: Prodigal (3x12)
1. Garfield really turned into a bat… I mean if he was gonna change, I’m glad it had meaning behind in. I am kind of wondering how a bat will do in battle but I’ll take this win for now. The CGI was a1 too! Also it was great to get an insight on why Gar hasn’t changed in to other animals. The writers listen when they want to chile.
2. How are we getting Dick’s soul back when he comes back from the lazarus pit?? Do you lose your soul in this DCU’s version? lmao
3. They took pictures of Dick’s dead body 🥴
4. Why is Barbara arrested? This makes no sense.
5. Jason was annoying asf. Why are we pretending like Dick was jealous of Jason? This storyline is overused and inaccurate. Just like calling Bruce an abusive foster dad. Jason was impulsive as all get out and he never listened. he always got himself in to trouble but somehow we’re blaming it all on Dick? FOOLISH.
6. I love Komand’r saving Conner but she just automatically knows how to use her new fire powers? Among other things, I wonder why the writers just switched up everything with Starfire and Blackfire’s storylines. Blackfire is good? Y’all need to quit playing with me.
7. Dick and Kory’s child… that little girl is adorable as hell but why y’all bring her into this foolishness? Is this the writers way of saying dickkory is still endgame? This was the only dickkory thing about this season so far. This scene would feel/ be different if this season Dick was trying to wrestle with his feelings for both Barbara and Kory. The vision of mar’i would be his way of telling himself Kory is the one. Just a very big missed opportunity for development.
8. “Is it ok if I call you my girlfriend” aww.
9. Dick on some “Unite the Titans”. Let’s see how long this lasts.
10. Smh Komand’r leaving is Conner’s villan origin story 😭😭. He is gonna be on his Lex Luther shit next season. BELIEVE THAT!
11. HOLD THE FUCK UP!!! YALL HEAR THAT SCORE WHEN KOMANDR ASKS CONNER TO HELP HER??? THAT IS THE CLASSIC SUPERMAN SCORE BUT AT A DEEPER REGISTER!!! I swear I typically don’t notice things like this but wow how do you miss it??
12. At the end of this season, I need Jason to take a break like Dawn did. Just a trip to a DC city no one has ever heard of that has no cell service.
13. “You’ll never be a Titan again”
14. Conner done fucked shit up jesus. Evil Conner has arrived sooner than I thought🥴 The hold of a first love man. Punani be powerful!
15. Ok Barbara let’s reboot Ms. Oracle 👏🏾
16. I really hate everyone up down and through this batcave. I’m sorry but y’all got no choice but to blow that mansion up.
I have to say, this episode was better than the rest. There are still things that pissed me off but there are things I really enjoyed. Gar and Rachel working together and Gar opening up to Rachel. Conner turning on Kom was predictable in the moment. Not gonna lie, I thought Kom would turn on Conner lol. This is the perfect time to bring out Conner’s Luther side. It did break my little Konner heart. I feel like it is taking Donna and Tim forever to reunite with the Titans. Their story is dragging a bit for me. Dick… it’s always at the end of the season when he wants to work with his team. I’m over it. This should be a season thing.

pairing: titans!jason todd x reader, pre-established relationship, best friends
warnings: mentions/allusions to (attempted) suicide, jason just needing someone in his corner, spoilers for titans s2e12
a/n: 1000/10 this is meant for @cipheress-to-k-pop, kudos to her for inspiring this and simping over jason peter todd with me - so here’s an exploration of what happened between jason leaving rose and showing up to donna’s funeral
Gotham is, by no means, a small city. And it's easy to come back to, after everything.
After the Titans disband - again, and you’re honestly left with nothing to do and nowhere to go.
After your best friend gets kidnapped, tortured, and thrown off a roof.
After you find him driven to another roof, ready to step off with nothing to catch him, because he’s ready to go somewhere you know you can’t follow.
And after Jason Todd leaves on a motorcycle with Rose Wilson, because he is going somewhere you think you can’t follow. Except can’t isn’t the right word - you shouldn’t follow him, you think. Because Dick was the one to talk him off the roof, like a brother is supposed to, and all you can remember is the wind roaring in your ears and blocking everything out except that Jason wants to jump, Jason wants to die, I don’t know how to help him. The words die in the back of your throat, and if Dick hadn’t been there-
You don’t want to think about if Dick didn’t make it up there when he did. So you’re avoiding Jason - which is all too easy to do when he’s supposed to be on the other side of the country. Until he calls you and you realize he’s here. In Gotham. The two of you are still connected by the same city.
He doesn’t say where the two of you need to meet, but you know exactly where to find him in the vastness of Gotham’s skyscrapers and abandoned warehouses.
By the time you make it to the top of - surprise, a skyscraper - your legs and lungs are burning. It makes it all the more apparent that you haven’t gotten the same level of Batman-training, and that a busted elevator forcing you to take the stairs is already a sign of bad luck. When you’re able to push the door leading to the rooftop open, you spot the gargoyle first, and it somehow manages to make you smile. All the years you’ve known Jason, the guy who’s become your best friend, and you’ve lost count of the number of times you’ve been able to find him hunched up next to the stone monster. Even now, the shades of yellow on his hoodie stand out like muted sunlight.
“Hey.” The sound of your voice and the opening door gets him to turn around. His legs are dangling over the edge of the roof. You know he’s just sitting there - just sitting, nothing else - but it’s suddenly harder for you to take another breath, and when you move towards him, it’s in a sprint. There’s a spot left for you between him and the gargoyle, one that you take without hesitation as your hand grabs at his jacket. He’s taken aback, you can tell - his eyebrows furrow and he opens his mouth to say something, only to close it a second later. This close, and you can see how his eyes are rimmed with red. Like he’d been crying.
There’s a stinging sensation at your eyes that makes you think you must look the same. Your fingers tighten around worn fabric, and it grounds you. Jason wasn’t wearing the hoodie that day. This isn’t the same as that.
“Are you okay?” you finally ask, pulling your knees up towards your chest instead of dangling them over the edge. You’re too close to the edge already. “Where’s Rose?”
When Jason finally speaks, his voice is rough in the way that it gets when he’s had a few beers. You know this voice well, the same way he knows his way arounds brews, and this takes you back to the first time you'd met him when you were kids, at the bars that your dad and his uncle would get together at.
“I don’t know,” he says. Then he laughs. “I don’t care, you know? Fuck Rose-”
“Could you scoot back?” The question almost rips itself out of your throat, despite your efforts to keep it in until he’s finished telling you what happened. But all you can see are his shoes dangling over the edge, stories above the street, and when you look at the street, you’re imagining his body leaving its impact on it. You can feel Jason’s eyes on you, and you wait for him to tell you to stop being a pussy.
Instead, he mirrors your position and pulls his feet up, tucking them in as he pulls himself away from the edge.
You can breathe again.
“Sorry,” you mutter, finally making eye contact with him again. “I just - I’m sorry.”
I’m sorry I wasn’t there.
I’m sorry I’m such a coward.
I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.
I’m sorry I’m such a bad friend.
“Why the hell are you sorry?” Jason asks, brows furrowing. Now he’s really looking at you, and it’s so heartfelt that you need to drag a hand down your face so you can hide. At the same time, it makes you so angry, because all you can remember is a room full of broken and awful heroes, painting him a villain who would drag out their darkest secrets, their deepest pains, to taunt and jab them with.
How could people do that to a kid? How could they do that to Jason, who - sure, he was rough around the edges, and cocky, and he went out of his way to be a little unlikable sometimes, but he was good. He was one of the best goddamn people you knew, even if you were saying that with bias.
You’re pulled out of the daze you’re in when he calls your name, and you try to speak around the words that are lodged in your throat, clogging it up. “I’m sorry,” you repeated, and the Vice around your throat tightens. “I wasn’t there when it mattered. With you. At the Tower. When they - and you-“ At this point, you have to suck in a deep, shuddering breath. One that has you keeling forward, head falling between your knees.
“Woah. Woah, woah, hold on-“ Jason wrestles his arm out of the sleeve you’re holding onto, and then you feel him pulling you back from the edge. It’s his turn, and he does it with ease, like you’re nothing but air. There’s that training again. “Jesus fuck, you - come on.” Just like that, the two of you are collapsing and folding in on each other.
Jason has gone so incredibly still, like he doesn’t know what he should be doing, and it makes you want to cry - except you don’t. You don’t know if you can feel anything else besides being scared or pissed off - at the Titans, at him - that couldn’t possibly be fair - at yourself. He’s so still it’s like he’s a corpse. “You get hurt somewhere?” he asks, and you shake your head, even as he’s awkwardly patting you over. “Someone pull some shit on you when you ditched the Tower?” You shake your head again, and you register that you're holding onto his hand. You squeeze, tight. It’s warm. He’s warm. There’s blood flowing through his veins.
He’s okay. He’s alive.
Jason’s hand is squeezing yours just as tight, and it grounds you - he’s keeping you grounded - long enough that you can start to breathe again. Enough that you can keep talking.
“I fell asleep.” The words are eerily similar to Gar’s own sentiments when the two of you wandered into the kitchen to find an already-fractured team. “I didn’t - I didn’t sleep for two days, you know that? You don’t really get any of that when there’s a psychopath torturing your friend and it’s your fault.”
“It ain’t your fucking fault,” Jason’s quick to say, words frosted with the kind of accent that’s married to a childhood down in Crime Alley. You haven’t grown out of yours, but his has gone sparse since Bruce Wayne picked him out. “Don’t fucking say-”
“Gar and I were supposed to have your back down there.” You press your lips in a thin line, eyes meeting his. “I’m supposed to have your back.”
“I was being a stupid little shit. Hank was right.” Fucking Hank. You think you could attack him, probably. Pick a stupid fight.
“We always think it’s our fault.” Now your words are deliberate. “And we always think we’re the fucking poison. ‘Cept we’re not.” Jason groans, and you can feel him start to pull away. You don’t let your grip loosen, so he uses his other hand to push his hair back roughly and pull the hood over his head, yanking the fabric down so you can’t make out his expression.
“I wasn’t gonna jump.”
“Yeah, you were.”
“I mean just now. I saw your face. I know what you’re thinking.”
“I thought you were gonna fall.” His lips twist into a grimace, and you let go of his hand to shove your own into your pockets. Your fingertips are cold.
“I would’ve caught myself.” Finally, the traces of Robin Jason - cocky, uncaring, cool - are coming back. “Could teach you how, if you want.”
“Do you want to catch yourself?” you ask, not quite ready to fall back into lopsided and carefree with him. “‘Cuz if you don’t, I gotta be the one doing the catching, Jason. Even when you’ve got some kind of - I don’t fucking know, a Superboy doing it.”
“Why?” The little shit has the audacity to smirk. “You jealous?” Incredulous, you stare at him. And then you take your bag and you swing it at his shoulder, only for him to smack it away.
“I’m being serious.” It amazes you how Jason does that - switches at the flip of a coin so as to replace the real shit he’s going through with throwaway comments like that. Sometimes, he’s a real asshole. Even as he’s staring at you with an entirely different expression now, one that makes you wonder just how much he knows about how he makes you feel.
“You need me to catch you?”
“Sometimes,” you admit, turning your head as he shifts closer to you, enough that your knees bump against one another. You push against him, and it turns into an exchange that lasts until your knee is sore. By the end of it, you can feel Jason laughing in your ear. His eyes aren’t red anymore. You take the sleeve he’d shrugged out of and get your arm through it, leaving the two of you awkwardly cramped against one another, and he laughs even more.
“Why can’t we do this shit at the tower?”
“Because you get - you’re all moody, you ass. It’s weird.” You can feel the weight of him on your shoulder and it makes you sigh. “You - look, we gotta talk. For real, you know that?”
“We did,” he mutters, a bit more sullen now. But there’s another elbow to your side, so you think that maybe it’s a bit better. For all that Gotham is home to the world’s evils, you can still love it if it can bring this out in Jason. “You know I say shit to you that I’m not saying to anyone else.” That elicits a half-hearted grin out of you, and you knock your fist against his. His eyes rake over bruised knuckles.
“You asked me if I was okay,” he says, thumb brushing over them. “Are you-”
“Someday,” you interrupt, because it’s a fruitless question. There’s no being okay, and you realize how your own question from earlier is naive. “I’ll get past the fact that we’re gonna keep almost dying. Like the shitshow with Deathstroke. And the fact that the assholes that are supposed to be heroes are full of shit.” Jason’s expression is all-too knowing, and you wonder if he’s figured out that the reason you went to San Francisco had nothing to do with wanting to be a hero and everything to do with not being able to handle Gotham alone. Maybe it’s better to just have yourself - to not have to lean on anyone else to keep on living, but then you look at the boy in front of you. And you know that if Jason only had himself, you wouldn’t be sitting with him right now.
He’s probably figured you out already. He’s Robin. For all that you poke at him for being boneheaded, you know that Batman’s taught him all the ways to see through a person. Even without x-ray vision.
Then he gives you a lopsided smirk, and you know he’s chosen not to say anything. Instead, he hauls himself to his feet - and you with him - with graceful ease, letting you link your arm with his in a way that has your hands brushing together.
“You still haven’t told me what happened with Rose,” you say. At that, he makes a face. One that draws another laugh out of you, because it has his features scrunched up in a scowl that departs from the betrayal you’d found him drowning in when you’d first gotten here.
“You wouldn’t fucking believe - come on.” He uses his foot to toss his bag in the air, catching it with one hand and slinging it over his shoulder. “I’m not doing this unless we’re getting a burger or some shit.”
“What, she break your heart, big boy?” You manage to catch the elbow that’s headed for you, even as Jason kicks you in the back of the knee for that comment. It’s quips and banters that are coming back, a routine the two of you fall into even after weeks apart. Jason’s shouldered the door to the stairwell open - losers first - and you find yourself casting one final look to the lone gargoyle before you step inside.
Gotham is, by no means, a small city. She’s unforgiving and cruel, and her metal arches and stone beams are interwoven with a history of poison. Some days, you wonder if it’s too late - if you’ve already got it in your veins, running through your blood and killing you from the inside. Leaving a city like her was easy.
And it’s easy to come back to, despite everything. Because if Jason isn’t poison, then maybe you’re not, either.

WANDERING WORLDS
DickKory | Core Four Centric | Cannon Divergence | Longfic
Summary:
Dick Grayson is dead. His life taken by his own brother. The Abel to Jason’s Cain. Consumed by grief, Rachel gives in to despair, losing control, a portal opens, but from it no destroyer of words come through. Now Kory has to deal with the death of the man she loved and with this stranger that looks exactly like him, but isn’t.
————————————–
Chapter Thirteen – By any other name
Still lying on his bed at the hotel, Dick turned the invitation card in his hands. Traveling across realities, finding a world and people he once was sure were lost forever, that all had become somehow normal concepts through the last months since he had time to get used to them. But that thing… That piece of paper and the words written on it. That was crazy.
“What do you think he means with this, Donna?” he had asked her when it was only the two of them after a good training session.
“He decided to accept you, stupid.”
READ ON AO3
Dick didn’t think so, it felt much more like that this world’s Bruce was making a statement. The card could be printed “You Are Not Him” all over, front and back for what Dick was concerned. He didn’t want to admit even to himself, but it hurt a little bit. Why would he care if a man that, under the wrong circumstances, could start the end of the world, thought about him?
He squished water from this bottle on his neck, using the thermic shock to ground himself to the moment. It was too easy sometimes, to float away or get trapped in his own maze of thoughts.
“Are you really letting me go alone?” He cringed as soon as the phrase left his lips, and the condescending rising of Donna’s eyebrow didn’t help.
“You’re not going alone, you’re taking Kory…”
He had taken a deep breath there, irritation taking his whole body, irritation he knew, had nothing to do with Donna.
“About that, I wish you’d stop the insinuations-“
“Bird boy,” she said in that patronizing tone that drove him crazy since they were kids, “I’m not insinuating anything, I’m affirming. Look, if some parallel Garth fell from the sky you would not see me losing time with bullshit.”
“Well, I’m not you, and neither is Koriand’r.”
She snorted.
“Obviously.”
The thing with him and Donna was that, even when he was in his worst behaviour, it still felt somehow justified because she found a way to come through and above him. Prettier, smarter, yadda yadda. And as much as it infuriated him it was nice. It was nice to have someone that he couldn’t hurt easily, that he didn’t have to hold back his worst side like a boiling potato. Someone who he knew wouldn’t leave him at a wrong word, but only roll her eyes, kick his ass, and tell him to do better.
He had never had that with Bruce. He thought he had that with Kory. But she didn’t even told him who she really was. And when things got tough, when he became tough, she gave up on him, and decided to fix things on her own.
His phone buzzed, and he let down the card at the bedside table and reached for it. Dick scrolled over the Titans chat, and all the activity after Koriand’r posted his picture the previous night. Rachel’s dramatic memes made him chuckle, but his thoughts darkened again when a new text came.
Selina was having breakfast with them at the hotel.
No word from Bruce.
Donna was wrong.
But if she were, what the hell he was dragged to Metropolis for?
*
The conversation with Donna was still replaying in his head with mixed thoughts regarding Bruce when he met Koriand’r in their way to the elevator. She was staring at him, so much that he almost missed when she ignored him. Last time she stared at him like that, he had to be a gentleman and ended with a bruised jaw as payment.
“What? There’s something on my face?” He asked slightly annoyed.
God… She blushed. Dick swallowed dry. Don’t let Donna get to you, you are not a teenager anymore, he tried to say to himself.
“No... It just came to me, that we hardly see each other outside of the tower, I’m used to find you in an apron serving breakfast in the morning.”
“Glad to hear you’re used to me,” the flirty remark escaped him before he could stop himself, and the elevator dinged, doors opening, but no one entered. For a few tense seconds, he worried hard about what would she say or if she would say anything.
“Kinda didn’t have a choice,” she said in that suave self-assured tone of hers that he could only dream of simulate convincingly, nevermind embodying it authentically, which only made it all more attractive in her “you stole my best friend and my kids, it was that or losing for a x’anyan.”
After that he lost completely the war against the muscles pulling his lips into a smile.
“A what?”
The door opened again, she walked across him leaving first. Their bodies didn’t even brush, but Dick could feel the electric discharge of her movements prickling his skin.
“So, there are some things other me didn’t teach you,” she said, standing outside, she had braided her long fluffy hair, and it fell over her shoulder leaving one side of her neck completely naked, he tried to not obsess so much about the elegant lines curving from her jaw to her shoulders.
When he was able to move again the doors were almost closing again.
“Told you,” he whispered, but close as they were, even without her alien powers, she’d be able to hear him easily, “I was a bad student.”
The look she gave him, then. In another world he would have kissed away that smile. In another world they wouldn’t even left the hotel room.
But there was no they and, no matter how Donna tried to make him believe it was just that easy. It was not her.
“Excuse-me,” a man said, reaching for the elevator button and forcing the both of them to move and break their stare competition.
He didn’t feel guilty, not really, but a deep sadness settled in his stomach as he watched her walk in front of him.
She was not her, she would never be his Kory.
Because his Kory was dead.
He could fall in love with this Princess Koriand’r too, of course, it would be terribly easy. And maybe he was already half-way, but he couldn’t cross that path. He couldn’t because the truth was, he didn’t want to. He didn’t want the responsibility of loving that woman, when truly, his heart ached for someone else. She, he realized, as he watched her approach the table where Selina was already waiting for them, deserved so much better than borrowed love.
*
“There he is,” Selina said standing up as they approached, she had already kissed Koriand’r as if they were old friends. They matched in that easy way they approached people, a certain grace he would never have. Selina reached up to him, her many bracelets clinking to each other like wind chimes until her hands, warm and skinny held his face.
“Isn’t he handsome, Miss Anders?”
“Please call me Kory.”
Selina turned the corner of her eyes to Koriand’r, a twinkle in them that, although it was not the woman he had grown up with, Dick could recognize exactly what it meant.
“Clever way to dodge the question, but I’ll let it slide.”
“Nice to see you, Selina,” he breathed putting his hands over hers. Automatically, Dick leaned in, as he would do as a little kid, she smiled, and the crinkles around her eyes deepened.
“Wonderful to see you, kitten,” and then she let go with a sigh, sitting down. She had chosen a table at the balcony with a view to the river “I told your father I’d be meeting you for breakfast,” she started with an annoyed tone, “but you know he doesn’t do mornings, and god knows he needs his beauty sleep…” She trailed off looking down and choosing a macaron. “Don’t worry, you’ll see him tonight.”
Dick didn’t hide his wince as he also sat. He wanted to have a nice breakfast, he really wanted too, but if that’s how she’d be handling the situation from the start, he had no choice but fight her bullshit with honesty, raw and clean.
“Selina… What are we really doing here?”
She frowned, looking genuinely confused at his question, which only made his anger brew a degree hotter.
“Honey, isn’t it obvious?”
He let out a shaky bitter laugh at that. Obvious. Did that word even mean anything any longer?
A dark, impossibly warm, hand covered his under the table, and he relaxed the fist he didn’t know he was holding tightly on his lap.
“No,” it was all he managed to say through his teeth.
“I don’t want to blindside Bruce. And this is not my conversation to have. But remember what we’ve been talking about all this time.”
“We don’t even talk about Bruce,” he snapped.
Dick couldn’t have foreseen the betrayal he was feeling, because he had known all that time that her calls were nothing but lip service to Bruce. That he did, in truth, not trust him at all. That all Bruce thought of him was that he was an impostor trying to steal the place of the undoubtedly perfected version of the son he’s lost and blemish his legacy. That, after Donna couldn’t give him the proof the wanted, he sent Selina to get it by any means necessary. That this whole thing of taking him away from San Francisco and the rest of the Titans was just the set up.
“Baby,” Selina called so sweetly that not for the first time, he wanted to fall for the trick, he wanted to go along, just to find out what would happen, when they figured it out that there was no scheme, that it was not a trick. It was just him, even if for better or for worse, he was not what they expected or wanted to be. “You don’t talk about him. He talks about you all the time.”
“Even if that was true,” he moved his hand under Koriand’r’s, holding it properly. He didn’t know where she had become Koriand’r instead of Kory, but the divide felt right. Maybe it was after both Gar and her told him they had trouble picking him and the dead man aside. If this was not the woman he had thought internally as his wife, he didn’t need to push her away. He could accept the comfort of her hand. “He’d be talking about his real son.”
“You look pretty real to me,” she said in a dismissive tone. “Pretty real anger issues too.”
“I’m not him, Selina. You think you know me, you act like so, but I’m not.”
He was this close of standing up, but the hand holding his grounded him, even though there was no other force other that it’s delicate weight being exerted.
“You still need Bruce, that’s very much the kitten I should have held closer back in the day,” there was real regret in her voice, and a whole lot of grief.
How could she know? How could she even imagine what hearing that meant to him? Even if she meant to someone else.
“That’s what you think this is? A second chance?”
“Why not?” She said with an unnerving smile that brought a glimpse of the tricky thief of her youth. “You told us, Bruce killed me in your world, you can think me a fool for standing beside him still after hearing that. I’ll let you. And twenty years ago, this story would be enough to send me straight to eastern Europe with a one way only ticket. But kitten, we’re old now, we’ve lost enough. We take what we can and we make the best of it.”
He wanted to talk back, he wanted to scream at her face that his whole family was dead, that it didn’t matter how she saw it, to him, it was not worth it. This second chance, it couldn’t be worth it if the price was his Kory, his children, even his Selina, to whom he hadn’t talked since he was a teenager. But how could he? How could he when she was there in front of him, beautiful, infuriating. How, when the hand now clasped to his was warm and pulsing with life.
Dick bit his words and turned his gaze to Koriand’r, she seemed to be waiting for him. Her beautiful green eyes questioning. He shook his head. It’s fine, he meant. She gave him a little smile, and patted his hand a couple of times before letting go.
*
Later, Dick caught his image at the mirror, and for a moment he was back at that bathroom in a Wayne Manor he could recognize even though he had never been truly there before. Eyes enlarged, eyebrows arched, he massaged his rising chest over the tight white shirt. The man in that mirror looked like a monster. It was anxiety inducing to think that, in so little time, only two things remained from him. The scar, that sometimes was the only thing that had the kindness to remain and prove to him this was not all a dream, and the long hair he didn’t know what to do with now.
He jumped when someone knocked at his door.
“Dick? Are you ready?”
His eyes trembled shut, and Dick tried to even his breathing.
“Just a minute.”
But a minute became two, and then three, he thought she had left without him when the door clicked open forcing to him to move his head in its direction as she let herself in.
“What’s wrong?”
She had chosen an off shoulder periwinkle sink dress that at the same time hanged elegantly to her angular frame and looked like it could fall apart at any given moment. Like a nymph in an old panting. The skirts flared when she walked towards him, the fabric shimmering silver.
“Dick?” She asked again, brows frowned in concern.
If she were his Kory, he’d have stood up and kissed her, and kissed her and kissed her. To hell with Bruce, to hell with Selina, to hell with this stupid gala. He’d locked the door and loved that dress off her only leaving the room when the hotel sent someone to see if they were still there.
But she was not.
So, he just tried to smile.
“My hair,” he swallowed, his face heating.
“Uh?” She blinked.
“I don’t know what to do with it, it’s too long.”
Her laugh was like little silver bells, frown relaxing.
“Lemme help you, then. In Tamaran most men have long hair, you know?” Koriand’r rushed closer to his side and put one knee on his bed, gently nudging him so he’d be with his back towards her. “My father’s hair goes to his waist. Can’t wait to tell Donna you had a diva freak out.”
He didn’t comment about the tense she used to refer to her father, she had lost a lot too, didn’t she? He wondered how it made her feel, being so far away from her people. He hardly ever talked to his Kory about her planet, too afraid bringing up beyond their flirting in her native language would make her miss everything and want to go back.
Dick held a sigh when her long fingers slid into his hair, peeking at their reflection through his lashes.
“You just came with me to gather blackmail material,” he managed in a low voice, “now I see.”
Their eyes met in the mirror, but the contact was brief, and she went back to concentrating in his hair.
“Isn’t blackmail material if I keep giving it away free, but now you gave me ideas. Do you have a comb or a brush?”
“Yes, in the bathroom.”
He watched her move to fetch the materials she’d need biting the trembling of his lip, and when she was back, it felt a little bit easier.
--------------
There’s a conversation between Dick and Bruce that I’m trying to write but I keep avoiding it and putting other stuff between that and where we are in the story, it’s so annoying even though I’m the one writing and technically have all the control lmao.
I hope you’re doing well. I’m my usual self, and right now very into soft romance with just a little tinge of longing and angst because that’s the thing fueling this simulation lmao. I watched Matrix 4 (finally) and WW will be drinking a lot from that, you can thank Miss Lana and tell her she owes me 20 bucks for the first act of that movie.
Shout out to @escapism-through-imagination for being such a good friend and listening me babbling about how I suffer writing fic, you know, a work nobody ever forced me to do.

♡ prompt: "you accidentally get sent into the future and see how you both turn out.”
♡ pairing: dick grayson (anyverse / nightwing) x fem reader
♡ lyric inspiration: “I said that’s life and as funny as it may seem, some people get their kicks stomping on a dream but I don’t let it get me down cause this fine old world keeps spinning around.”
♡ note: not checked for grammar or spelling mistakes / again like what I said with my Jason fic, you don’t necessarily use the TITANS universe to imagine this fic. i just used this version of dick for no reason.
“god, this is the last time I do any kind of work with ANY OF YOU!” you yelled at Dick as he bit on his inner cheek. all of you had been fighting off a bunch of crooks and at first, you thought it was okay.....that was until one of the crooks pulled out his hidden magical abilities, “at the very least, we could’ve called Klarion for help!”
Damian gave you a look as if what you were saying was stupid, “I’M JUST SAYING! WE’RE ALL FUCKING HUMAN AND ZATANNA ISN’T EVEN IN THE COUNTRY TO HELP!” you yelled back.
Dick was trying to remain calm as he hadn’t seen one of the criminals approaching him. he was too busy charging one that was heading towards you. you; however, had saw them out of the corner of you eye and practically sped to Dick which is what the criminal wanted.
he wanted you and Dick out of the way in order to get Damian trapped. as you and Dick had passed each other with the notion to save each other, the crook pulled out a gadget that opened up a portal.
“NIGHTWING!” “( YOUR HERO NAME )!”
+
the two of you went to grab each other but it was too late. you and Dick had gotten sucked into the portal as you let out a piercing yell. Dick tried grabbing you, hoping that wherever the two of you landed, he would get the hardest impact.
soon enough, both you and Nightwing collided with the ground. you instantly shot up, preparing to fight whoever was around. Dick had took in the surrounding and whispered that the two of you were safe.
“where the hell are we?” you asked, trying not to panic, “we need to find another portal back. Damian is on his own!” you fidgeted with your fingers as Dick waved you off.
“if anything, Damian might be more in his element,” he whispered, “you forget how Damian grew up. I think he’ll be fine. he probably already called Bruce or one of the boys.” you tried to figure out how the hell Dick was so calm about the situation.
Dick took off his mask as you followed along, “I think are biggest issue might be trying to figure out what year he took us too. I can’t imagine he took us in the past so we might just be in the future,” Dick explained.
both of you walked down the hill that you had landed on and saw you were in Bludhaven, “I think we’re in your home territory,” you murmured. Dick sighed in relief. he was more relieved that both of you landed in his hometown because had you landed in Gotham, he felt like that would’ve landed you in more trouble with the Bat, “I didn’t think Bludhaven was this ran down,” you told Dick.
“hey!” he exclaimed, “it isn’t as bad as it looks!” you giggled trying not to catch attention from anyone. the two of you made it down the hill when the realization hit you. Bludhaven had snow falling all over the town and you nor Dick were even mildly dressed in clothes to handle the cold.
“do you have clothes in your apartment? it’s freezing out here!” you exclaimed. Dick gave you the side eye, “I do but if we landed in the future, my future self might be there. we can run into a store and get clothes there.”
“and do you have cash? bc if you’re carrying a debit card, that would be really weird to see a transaction from the future,” you replied. Dick took out his wallet and pulled out a crisp 100, “I stand defeated,” you murmured. Dick rolled his eyes as the two of you saw a department store at the corner of the street.
before you could pull in, you heard someone scream you hero name, “hey! those are sick cosplays!” they said running up to you. you gave him a confused look before realizing, you had to pretend that you weren’t actually yourself, “thanks! it took a lot of work,” you tried to say.
“I bet. it looks super realistic too! ever since she stopped fighting, it’s been super weird not seeing ( your hero name ) around.” you stood confused, wondering what he meant by that, “oh! you’re supposed to be Nightwing! that’s awesome! do you think I can get a picture!” he asked.
you looked to Dick who just shrugged and agreed. the two of you smiled for the photo as he scanned it, “thanks! I swear, you look exactly like her too! but clearly that can’t be right since the actual ( your hero name ) is pregnant allegedly!” he said as he turned around to leave.
“pregnant?” you yelled, holding onto Dick who was laughing hysterically, “it’s not fucking funny! I’m pregnant in whatever year this is!” you yelled. Dick could see the panic in your eyes, “he never said it was actually true. he said it was alleged that you were,” Dick tried to emphasize.
you walked into the department store, which ended up being a Target, and ran to the women’s section, wanting to get out of your hero costume as soon as possible. once you and Dick grabbed the clothes, he quickly paid for it before the two of you darted to the bathrooms to get dressed.
you managed to come out faster than Dick as you held onto your costume by hand. with curiosity plaguing your mind, you saw a magazine and looked at the date.
December 22, 2024.
you sighed in relief. the two of you had only gone three years into the future which was a good thing....right?
“we’re three years into the future,” you told Dick. he nodded as you walked outside, “we can check if future you is actually home and if he’s not, you making some portal to get us back home!” you threatened.
“at this rate, I would’ve preferred if Damian would’ve been the one to come along,” Dick retorted. you pushed him to street, making him stumble over his feet, “say some snark shit again and see where that gets you,” you told him, “plus, you think I want to get stuck in the future with you? I would have preferred Jason if we’re going to be honest. at least he would’ve been more entertaining to be around.”
Dick remained quiet, not knowing how to respond.
the two of you had a weird relationship with each other. at times, the two of you got along, to the point where some thought the two of you were together while other times, you practically hated his guts. no one knew why the relationship was this way but his heart felt a pang as you confessed that you would have rather been here with Jason than him.
“way to kill a mood,” Dick said. you rolled your eyes, “you literally just said you’d rather be with Damian! don’t blame me for this shit. plus, if it wasn’t Damian, I’m sure you would wanted Starfire next,” you added on.
Dick looked at you stunned, “what makes you say that?” he asked. you rolled your eyes, “please, it’s not hard to tell that you and Star have a thing for each other,” you said, this time more quietly than before. Dick didn’t know how to respond but quickly for him, he didn’t have to. the two of you had arrived to where lived or at least hope he still lived there.
the house wasn’t big, not in the slightest; however, it was big enough for him on his own. the two of you looked inside of the window and saw that someone was facing their back towards it.
“whose that?” you asked Dick. he shrugged, half of him annoyed at you and the other half not knowing who it actually was. the two of you remained looking at the person, hoping they turned around so you could get a look, “it looks like you if I’m going to be honest,” Dick replied.
you sighed, “I don’t think it is but sure,” your statement was quickly taken back as the person finally turned around. it was in fact you...fully pregnant and opening up the window. you let out a piercing scream as Dick quickly covered your mouth, trying not to get caught.
“can you shut the hell up?” he whisper screamed, “you’re going to get us caught!” he continued. you took his hand off your mouth, “do that shit again and you’ll be dead before you can even see your future self,” you threatened, “plus! that’s me! pregnant as fuck!”
Dick tried not to laugh at your last statement but couldn’t, “if you’re pregnant, I wonder whose kid it is and why the hell you’re even at my place,” he wondered, “it’s probably yours,” you joked, making the both of you laugh quietly.
you remained looking through the window, watching as you stood up and got different things from a box. you were whispered things you couldn’t exactly heart but one thing you did notice was the huge ring on your left finger.
you whipped your head to look at Dick as his eyes widened. his future self had walked into the living room, giving you a peck on the cheek before bending down and kissing your stomach, “hey bubba! treating your creator well?” he asked.
both you and Dick looked at each other speechless as you put two and two together. you were pregnant....with Dick’s child, “you better because your mom might kill me if you’re giving her a hard time,” he joked before placing a kiss on your lips, “we should eat before John gets hungry and your dad thinks we ditched out on the plans,” you mentioned.
“John?” you whispered to yourself, wondering why the hell you named your future kid John, “John was my fathers name, you know, before he passed,” Dick confessed. your eyes widened, “oh, is it?” you murmured back, not knowing what to say.
the two of you walked closer the door as you noticed your belly again. it was bigger than you realized as Dick had to help you down the stairs. you watched yourself get into Dick’s are as you were struggling to put the belt around you. eventually, Dick drove away and left the two of you alone again.
the air was thick with silence as you had no idea what to say, “parents huh?” Dick asked with a chuckle of nervousness, “yup....and you’re the dad,” you added on. Dick nodded as you sat on the curb with your hands on your knees, “and you’re the mom,” he replied.
you let out a laugh of disbelief as you couldn’t make up anything to say, “crazy right? I think we’re married too,” you finally looked at Dick as he stared at you, almost lovingly, “is there an issue with that?” he asked as seriously as possible. you shook your head no, “nope. just weird that we were the ones that ended up married and having kids together,” you said.
Dick slowly grabbed your hand and held it softly.
“I mean it could be weirder...it could have been Jason or Tim,” he said out loud. you shrugged, “I mean, that would have weird too,” you played with Dick’s fingers and bit your lip, “I guess we should try and find our way back? we wouldn’t want to change the future,” you gave Dick a hopeful look.
he nodded as he helped you up but without hesitation, he pulled you in for a searing kiss, “I’ve been meaning to do that for a while now,” he whispered as he put his hand on your cheek and caressed it softly with his thumb.
a few seconds later, both of you saw a portal opening with Damian screeching from the other side of it, “COME ON YOU BUNCH OF IDIOTS!” he yelled dramatically. you laughed, looking to Dick, “you heard the boy, let’s get the future started,” Dick nodded grabbing your hand and stepping into the portal.

Jayslade (my first and only, inspired by a discussion in a Sladejay server and a convo I had with @d-xs). It was supposed to be NC-21 but as often happens, I ran out of steam during the setup.
Anyway:
If you wanted Jason to describe to you just how did he end up here, falling out of the highest floor in Titans Tower, bleeding from a stomach wound, with Slade Wilson in his arms... He can tell you, but it's not like it's a rare thing nowadays.
Well. It was a hell out of the first kiss, he can tell you that.
Probably the only thing that is making this different. And only time will tell if the butterflies in his stomach is a "good different" or a "sword wound, but extreme amount of dopamine released in his bloodstream fucking up with his pain perception".
It started when on his way to LA, he met with Talia. Unlike all the other times, she didn't come alone. Trouble followed her. Literal and figurative.
Figurative trouble came first, in the form of a six years old boy with a familiar scowl.
"And who might it be?" He said, completely unnecessary, save for him wanting to see how she would answer that one.
A sword tip pressed to his skin faster than he could move.
"Someone who can pierce your throat for the disrespect," the boy said.
Talia pressed a hand to the boy's shoulder.
"Someone who is on his way to meet his birth father, and so he should start to get used to the rules that are going to be expected from him. Damian, unsheathe the sword only as means of physical defense. Use your words otherwise."
The boy grumbled but put the sword back to its sheath on his back.
"Now, boys, lets get out of the open," Talia clapped her hands.
Jason made a half-bow, gesturing toward his car. Judging by the expression Damian made, he completely missed that it had been ironic.
Jason sighed. He could already tell that the little guy inherited the worst out of both parties involved in his conception.
"Why are you doing this?" He asked Talia after all of them had been seated and put belts on.
In case of Damian, it has been a kids car seat - which, now it made sense Talia asked for one to be installed when he picks them up in the airport. Damian had to put the sword down and right now it was just out of his reach. Jason couldn't help but chuckle - Damian noticed. Judging by his glare, he will remember it forever.
"Why am I bringing my son to meet his father?" Talia raised an eyebrow at him. "Indeed."
"You know what I have in store. You know it's not going to be a picnic for your Beloved. You really want to bring a kid into the mess?"
She waved her hand.
"As you assured me when you asked for my support, your plan ensures the city is to become safer, not more dangerous. Do you have second thoughts about your own tactics? You shouldn't follow through, then."
Jason shut up. If that's how she's going to play it, fine.
LA being what it is, soon enough they hit a traffic jam. He fiddled with radio. Drummed his hands on the wheel. Sneaked a look at Talia. She was immersed in something official-looking on her tablet. Jason only caught "Lexcorp" and "Offer".
He cranes his neck to check how the things were going in backseat.
Blue eyes immediately met his.
"So," Jason said. "What's your favorite book?"
A thump, and windshield broke, with pieces of glass inserting themselves into his back, just as he himself was flying to cover the boy and shoot the attacker. Talia's Kris managed to stop a blade from being embed in his side as he turned again.
In a blink of the eye, Talia was out of the car and Damian - out of his seat, shoving Jason to get at his sword and screwing up his aim. Jason still took out the first attacker, and he noticed Talia piercing the second. Damian hit the third one opening the car door and Jason shot him twice. Fourth and fifth jumped over the car and. The fifth one had been huge, with bulging veins and muscles, probably Venomised. Damian sliced his leg and he didn't even blink, bringing his fists on the boy's head. If Jason didn't tug him back, his scull would probably burst open as a walnut.
"What are you doing? Unhand me!"
Jason didn't listen though, sending a bullet into the Gargantua's chest, which did little more than knock him a few paces back.
Jason took a quick look around. There had been more assassins, crawling closer. Talia was fighting two, currently. She didn't tell her son to run, so probably she didn't see any way out except to fight till the last one, same as he. But, neither Jason saw how the little guy is going to fight them.
"Okay," he picked Damian up and swung him up, so Damian would sit on his neck. "This way you have a better reach to his neck. Let's work together, okay? I can't take him alone."
"I can," the boy said, but still, he listened.
Jason took a position back to back with Talia and continued making sure nobody could get to al Ghuls from his side closer than a bullet wound distance.
"So," Jason said, as the hostiles stopped coming and the police sirens were getting louder. "This is why you travel light."
"We need to leave the car," she inclined her head. Then she raised her hand and gently touched Damian on the wrist of his sword hand (kiddo was still sitting on Jason's neck, still dangling the sword precariously close to his face). "Are you alright, my love?"
"I wasn't afraid," Damian said immediately. "Todd chose to - I was helping him."
"I know, I saw you. You fought bravely, and I am sorry you had to fight at all. But I am asking if you're unharmed, and if you want me to take you down."
"No," Damian let go of Jason's head. "And yes, please."
Jason took the sword and Talia took her son. All of them took a retreat.
They made a pit-stop in a drug store, then Jason bought some clothes. Now, Jason was sporting bright red curls, Talia was looking gorgeous in a men suit and a hat, and Damian's sword was hidden from privy eyes in an elongated gift box.
They checked into a different hotel than Jason reserved. But that was the least of the inconveniences they were going to face now.
"So," Jason sipped orange juice.
They were sitting far away from the other restaurant patrons, and the architecture of the place ensured their voices wouldn't carry.
Talia didn't reply, though. She was carving Damian's meal into smaller pieces while the kid was looking at her with indulgence, as though she needed that far more than he did. He merely allowed it.
Based on how Damian was with his sword, maybe that's how it actually was.
Jason coughed and said louder.
"So!"
Talia sighed and gave the fork and knife back to Damian.
"Yes. Jason. Those were my father's men. Or hired by him in any case, thus allowing us to be attacked with so many witnesses, each of whom potentially could have recorded the incident and posted on social media. Which, in turn, would make it harder for us to reach our destination unnoticed. Or, keep your father from finding out you're alive."
"He really doesn't like me, does he," Jason pursed his lips.
What did he do? He didn't feel like he deserves that negativity yet.
"Grandfather said you're a blight upon the world," Damian said helpfully. "You coming back disrupted the natural order of things."
"Natural order?.. He is an immortal!.."
"Father is very much a mortal man, hence his reliance on the Lazarus's Pit. And he never was closer to feeling his mortality than when he caught up to the fact that I disobeyed his orders continuing to help you, and us, together, decimating his operatives around the world."
"He's not seriously butt-hurt I killed a child slaver, is he?"
"His issue was more with the poisoner. And my insubordination in general. He told me he was too lenient with me for too long," she rubbed her forehead. "And he can forgive a youthful folly, and he can forgive me taking pity on you once. Everything else required a proof of loyalty from me."
"Which was?.."
Talia pressed her lips together. Jason glanced quickly at Damian and back. She closed her eyes in response and when she opened them, there was nothing but determination.
"So, you're going to Gotham."
"I learned the way of Sword and Shadows from my mother," Damian said after he chewed a bite. Jason noticed he shoved carrots to the side. Good to see something of a normal kid in him. "And now I am going to learn the way of the Bat from my father."
"You know, I learned the way of the Bat already. I would rather do swords." Jason looked up at Talia. "Speaking of which. I guess the supply of masters is all dried out? Can you teach me?"
She wrinkled her nose.
"We teach the sword from the time a baby starts walking. I don't have patience going through the basics with someone like you."
Jason pressed a hand to his chest.
"I am a delightful student, I will have you know. No teacher of mine ever had a bad word to say, after."
He could tell she wanted to roll her eyes, but also she wanted to smile, so that was a win.
What Talia actually did, was to offer him a couple of option.
"I know a group of people in South Eastern Asia. But their sword style differs from mine, or most if what you will meet nowadays. It also includes a lot of introspection, suffice to say."
"Pass," Jason said.
"And the Terminator."
"Will he do it, though?"
"For a price. I can place a call, check out the price - but you will have to cone up with money this time."
"Don't worry," Jason said, mentally adjusting his plans. "I just know where to get it."
It's what he would have to do in any case. Jason getting outed was a big possibility. He can't step into Gotham - or, rather, let Bruce know he is back in town. Which meant no Red Hood, and no toying with food. It meant getting sneaky and flying under all kind of radars.
One part of the plan didn't change: Joker was going to be in LA tonight, and Jason was going to kill him.
The new spin on that plan was, Jason was going to rob him first.

After the next few hours, Gar and you keep up with city surveillance cameras but you haven't been able to spot Conner or Krypto. Your best guess is that they're probably in some secluded alley waiting for things to calm down before they start moving. It's a bit disappointing and disheartening. You and Gar need to find him and bring them back to the tower. It's not safe for them out there alone.
With no luck at the cameras, you convince Gar to come to the kitchen to have a snack. Neither of you have eaten in a while and you won't be useful if you're hungry. Gar reluctantly agrees but he pulls up the news on a laptop as he paces back and forth, you rummaging for a few granola bars. Gar tries to call Dick again but still gets his voicemail.
"Why isn't he answering?" Gar asking, words steaming with annoyance.
"Guilt?" You question, tossing Gar a granola bar from the other side of the counter. "I have no idea. Call Bruce again?"
"Uh...right, um." Gar rubs the back of his neck and you narrow your eyes at him.
He neglected to tell you that he did not call Bruce when he said he would. He went to call but then hung up before the call went through. Conner was your best chance at getting the Titans back together. He just wants them back, they belong together. They’re Titans. But, he knew you would probably be mad if he told you. You and Gar had one job.
"Gar, did you not call him?" You blink at him, sucking on your teeth.
Gar shakes his head, wincing. "Conner woke up and I thought if we called Bruce, he'd take Conner away and then we'd never get the Titans back to together."
You stare at him and you can't believe he was that desperate to lie and then not do what Dick told him to do. You know the Titans mean a lot to him but he should have called. This was probably part of why Dick wanted you to call Bruce. The two of you are not equipped to deal with this and what just happened proves that. But, Gar is beating himself up enough for it and you aren’t going to beat a dead horse. Especially because it’s Gar.
“Okay.” You let out an exasperated sigh, rubbing your face with your hands. “Okay, I’ll call Bruce then.”
“But we lost him. How are we--”
“Gar,” You shake your head. “Look, it’s Bruce Wayne. He raised Dick fucking Grayson and took Jason fucking Todd in who was stealing from the Batmobile, okay? He solves riddles from the Riddler. Us losing Conner? That’s child’s play. Bruce will know what to do.” You swallow your pride admitting Bruce might be kind of helpful right now and he might not yell at either of you for it. This can’t be worse than anything Dick and Jason have put him through.
“I’m really sorry.” Gar's brows knit together with guilt and you hang your head before looking back to him. You can't let him beat himself for it.
“It’s fine, I get it.” You sigh. “I just wish you would have told me. But, it’s okay. I get why you did it. I’ll call Bruce and we’ll find him.” You walk over to the other side of the counter and put your hands on his shoulders. “We got this.” You give him a confident smile and it does make him feel a little bit better.
You take your hands off him and just as you’re about to walk away, the alarm system goes off for zone two. Gar glances to you before going to the laptop and pulling up the intercom feed from the front door.
“Hello? Who's there?” Gar asks annoyed, not seeing anyone. You look over his shoulder, just seeing the buildings across the street.
Krypto jumps up on the screen and barks. You smile widely, already making your way toward the elevator. Gar follows right behind you, feeling a little bit of relief. At least Krypto is back and he can lead you both back to Conner.
You and Gar follow Krypto through the city, keeping up with him at an even pace. You almost laugh to yourself as you walk because this is kind of like Lassie. You're literally following a dog to find someone who's lost. But, Krypto is cooler than Lassie. He's a superdog. Gar, on the other hand, is just relieved you'll be able to get Conner and come back to the tower. He swears he'll be calling Bruce when you get back. He should have done it yesterday but he can make up for it now.
After about a fifteen-minute walk, Krypto runs ahead of you and Gar, jumping on someone in a trench coat. Gar feels the weight immediately lift from his shoulders. That's definitely Conner. You’re a bit surprised it was actually that easy to find him. But, you’re definitely feeling like you got lucky that no one had recognized him from the news.
"Great, dumbest dog ever." Conner says, looking down as Krypto sits right in front of him.
"He can ring a doorbell with his nose." Gar smiles softly at Conner as he walks up, you right to his left. "I've seen dumber."
"He brought Eve to the tower to find you, came to get us, found you again. Give him a little credit." You let out a soft laugh as you walk over to Krypto, patting his head gently.
Conner deadpans at the two of you, clearly not in the mood for anything. "Stay away from me." Conner states before walking off.
You look to Gar as his face falls. How is Conner possibly mad at the two of you? Sure, you were not specific with the Titan's instructions but he went rogue. It's at that moment you get why Dick was so angry at you and Jason, twice. You swear that thought will never see the light of day.
You and Gar start walking after Conner, taking long strides to keep up with him.
"What you did to those cops...you messed things up for a lot of people, including us." Gar says as you catch up to Conner. "I think we deserve an answer. What the hell happened?" You look to Gar and you’re proud of him for standing up himself. He doesn't do it nearly enough.
"When you invited me to be a Titan, I told you what I was. But you didn't listen cause that's not what you wanted to hear." Conner’s voice sounds hurt.
"You're right." Gar moves forward, standing in front of Conner so all of you come to a stop. "I didn't listen. Being a Titan isn't about being perfect. I..." Gar sucks in a breath, his voice lowering. "I killed a guy once. And I clawed him to pieces."
You remember after Jerry, Gar has said something about how he had killed someone and that must be what he's referring to. You didn't really ask, it didn't seem like something he wanted to talk about but given the look of distress on his face, you’re thinking maybe you should have. But, Gar is right. None of the Titans are perfect, and Conner doesn't have to be either. Being a Titan isn't about being perfect, it's about helping people who can't help themselves.
"So, maybe we should both be locked up." Conner states.
"Hey," You chime in. "No, that's not how it works. We all fuck up." You state, moving to stand beside Gar so you can look up at Conner. "You hurt those cops because you didn't know any better but everyone is capable of learning from their mistakes. Gar did what he had to survive. I nearly beat a guy to death for torturing me. We fuck up and then we work through it with each other. That's how it works."
Gar offers you a kind and grateful smile before looking back at Conner. "She's right. When we mess up, we learn from it with each other and so can you." Gar lets out a breath. "What we do...other people count on us to help them."
"Well, they shouldn't." Conner fires back.
"Why not? If you wanna argue about it, I'll argue." You cross your arms over your chest. "We can help them." You haven't actually been able to given Dick not letting any of you but that's the idea. "We have these abilities that we choose to use for good. Who you are has nothing to do with who your parents are. That's all you and you can choose to be good."
"And you two still hurt other people by choosing to be good." Conner strikes back and your eyes narrow.
But, before Gar or you can try reasoning more with Conner further, Krypto starts barking. The three of you look where Krypto is barking, seeing a dark grey armored vehicle show up with a CADMUS decal on the door. Those are the people who are looking for Conner and Krypto and you start getting a bad feeling about this.
"You guys have to get out of here, now." Conner states, lightly pushing Gar's chest before he starts walking confidently towards the vehicle.
You and Gar are quick to catch up to him. Gar runs in front of him, putting his hands on Conner's chest to stop him.
"No, no, no!" Gar's words rush together. "Do you really want to hurt someone else?" He asks as the three of you come to a stop.
"You can choose to walk away, Conner." You state.
Conner looks between you, jaw clenched. But, he doesn't start to move forward.
"Come on!" Gar taps Conner's shoulder and the three of you start running, Krypto running slightly in front of you.
The four of you run back to the tower, hoping CADMUS didn't notice you or follow you. You hope you lost them. You kept looking over your shoulder, checking but you’re pretty sure you lost them when you took a shortcut down an alley and cut across to a second one. That's the last you remember seeing them but there is a part of you that starts to worry about it.
They're looking for Conner. They're going to keep looking for him. Gar and you are not equipped to deal with that on your own. You’re worried for Conner. If anyone knows what it's like to be held against their will, it would be you. It's CADMUS and they made him which means it was probably torture. The anxiety creeps into the back of your throat but you have to swallow it down as you get out of the elevator. This isn't about you. This is about keeping Conner safe.
“Hey, you know they’re just gonna keep coming after me, right?” Conner asks as he sets his coat down on one of the table chairs.
Gar grabs three drinks from one of the shelves in the kitchen while you take a seat at one of the barstools.
“Let them try.” Gar states, putting the drinks down in front of you.
“We’re always gonna help.” You add in. You wouldn’t risk someone being subjected to what you were.
“This is my mess, not yours.” Conner states.
“This is what the Titans do.” Gar urges, leaning his arms on the counter, facing you and Conner.
“We protect people, including our own.” You give Conner a nod.
The words still feel a little sour in your mouth. That's what you're supposed to do but it doesn't feel like that's the case. You keep that to yourself though. It's not fair to argue that right now. Giving Conner this rundown of the shit that happened a few days ago isn't going to help anyone or anything or this situation. You decide just to back Gar up on this.
“Exactly, we have each other’s backs.” Gar smiles proudly before walking back off to the pantry.
“So, where are they? The other Titans.” Conner asks and you spin on your chair, facing away from Conner and towards Gar. That's all for Gar to explain.
“You know what,” Gar pauses for a second. “Maybe I should do what Dick wanted me to do in the first place.” Gar walks back of the pantry and pulls out his phone.
“Yes, yes you should.” You nod your head. This is gonna be a big mess if he doesn’t get ahold of Bruce. You cannot take CADMUS.
“Call in the big guns.”
“We’re gonna use guns?” Conner asks, a little worry in his voice.
“No, it’s just a metaphor. Calling Bruce Wayne.” Gar says with a smile.
“You are calling him, right?” You raise your brows at Gar and Gar nods softly at you, typing into his phone.
“Yeah, we need him.” Gar states and he starts to walk away but then there’s a security alert.
“Zone six, unauthorized access.” The automated voice says through the tower and Gar pauses, looking back at you.
“What’s that?” Conner asks.
“Zone six is the roof.” Gar's voice is filled with confusion.
"Why does it have to be roof?" You let out an exasperated whine. You’re really starting to hate rooftops.
The three of you look around, as if unsure what you should do but before you and Gar can check the security cameras, the floor-to-ceiling windows shatter. You lean away, dodging the glass. Gar takes a few steps further away and Conner flinches away from the windows. People in all black with guns start to storm the tower.
They repel through the windows and start coming in through the hall leading to the training room. You jump up from your spot, moving away from them, meeting Gar and Conner at the very end of the counter. Krypto starts barking as he runs in to join you. Gar puts his hands up, not knowing what the hell else to do with guns pointed directly at him.
Krypto starts barking and won’t stop while the men say to shut him up. Before they can act though, Krypto uses his superspeed and jumps onto one of the men, tackling him to the ground. Unfortunately, another man shoots a net with glowing green orbs at the ends right at Krypto and captures him. Conner jumps into action with the sound of Krypto whimpering.
This cannot be happening. The tower is supposed to be safe. It’s supposed to be secure but now you’re being stormed by fucking CADMUS. You feel your mouth run dry and this can’t be happening. They’re going to take Conner and probably kill you and Gar. How does this shit keep happening? But, now is not the time to panic so you watch them carefully, the throbbing hasn’t started yet but you’re sure it’s going to.
Conner punches two men at the same time, sending them flying backward and onto the floor. Two men start to walk towards you and Gar, Gar still having his hands up. You look to Gar and you’re thinking the same thing. Do or die. You nod at him and Gar attacks on of the men, grabbing his gun and then yanking him by his head, into the wall while you grab the other man.
You grab the gun, shoving the gun into him with all of your force before using it as momentum to swing him around into the kitchen area. You twist the gun around, as the man loses his grip and use the weapon to drag him further to your level. You bring your knee up to knee him in the face before landing a hit to the back of his neck, sending him to the floor.
You and Gar look at each other with pride before the throbbing starts kicking in, right in the front of your head. Your eyes widened and you grab Gar by his jacket, yanking him down behind the center counter and to the floor just as another man starts shooting at the two of you.
“Thanks.” Gar says, breathing heavily.
“Got you.” You offer a nervous smile. The throbbing has moved to the side of your head where more men have started shooting and Conner is still dealing with a few others. “Got a plan?”
“I’ll distract them so you can move.” Gar rushes his words, ripping his jacket from his shoulders while his face turns green. “Keep fighting.”
You look above you seeing the block with all of the kitchen knives. You crawl to the left of Gar so you’re right under where the knives are, Gar fully transformed now. Gar walks out from the counter, growling at one of the men before he jumps on him. You take that as your chance to stand up, and immediately start grabbing knives. The throbbing starts coming from the back of your head and slightly to right. In a swift motion, you spin, hitting one of the men whose gun is aimed right at you. You hit him right where his neck peaks out of his protective gear. He drops to the ground, holding the wound where blood starts spraying out of it.
You take the knives, moving towards where Gar is to make sure he’s doing okay. Gar still has a guy pinned as a few more men come in, all aiming guns at you, Gar, and Conner and the throbbing intensifies, right in the front of your head but you’ve been training for this. You start throwing the knives with everything in you, one right after the other, hitting two men and they go to the ground but the throbbing switches to the side and it's all starting to mush together as you catch a glimpse of Gar slowly moving away from the man on the ground and he looks hurt. Two men are moving to either side of the counter to surround you so you throw your last knife at the guy to the right, turning to fight the other one.
You take the first swing but he uses the gun to hit you away, the butt of the gun connecting with the side of your face. Before you can regain your footing, you feel a hard hit to your right leg. You try to fight through it, trying to grab the gun from this man as well but he yanks it away and the world starts spinning around you. You sway slightly before going to the floor with a heaving breath.
You drag yourself up against the counters facing the windows, while your heart rate starts to slow. Your vision is blurry and warped as you look in front of you. Gar is leaning against the opposite counter with a heaving chest, no longer in tiger form. They shot him, too and there's a bloody handprint right before his head. This can't be happening. It can't be happening. You have to save him.
You look to your leg. There's a dart sticking out of your leg and you know that's not good but there's no real panic happening. You should be panicking, getting an extra boost of adrenaline, but it's like your entire body is shutting down, the adrenaline won't kick in. You pick up your arm to pull it out and your arm feels like it weighs a thousand pounds. It takes you a few tries to get your arm to line up with the dart. It's like your brain isn't quite connecting with your body and it's frustrating but eventually, you’re able to pull the dart out of your leg.
Gar looks to you and you lost. He was shot with a tranquilizer and he can't do anything to help. He's stuck here and you are so in over your heads. Everything is so heavy and it's hard to breathe. Gar can barely keep himself up right and he's watching you struggle to breathe in front of him. He really messed up this time. And he's fucking scared. They're gonna kill you both.
A woman comes in with more men, they walk in through the elevator and her voice sounds distorted to you as your eyelids grow heavier. You’re wheezing with every breath, trying to look over to Conner. You get a hazy glimpse of him just standing there. You have no clue what the hell is going on but what you do know, is that you are so screwed. And no matter how badly you want to get up and keep fighting, your legs won't work. Your arms are too heavy to lift and it feels like you’re in a fever dream. Every second is a struggle as the woman keeps talking and finally, you’re body gives out to the tranquilizer.
You don’t come to until the following day. You’re in the same spot you were before and your head still feels heavy and foggy. At first, you just feel a little disoriented and confused. For just a second, you forget what happened last night, aren’t sure why you’re on the floor in the kitchen. Your right leg where you were shot with the tranquilizer is sore. Your breathing is ragged while you look around slowly. But confusion clouds your mind as you look around slowly seeing broken glass and blood around you. And that’s when everything starts to become clear.
Gar, Conner, Krypto. Tranquilizer darts. Guns. Fighting.
A sense of panic washes over you as you look at the spot in front of your where you last saw Gar, the bloody handprint staring directly at you. Your head starts to throb, but not for fighting, just from a normal headache. You know Gar wouldn’t leave you here if he were still here and your heart breaks. They took him. They took all three of them and left you for dead. But you can’t focus on that, you need to get help. So, you start to get up.
You place your hands on the cool floor beneath you and push up. Your arms feel like limp spaghetti but you push through it. Tranquilizers are just an anesthetic and you know the more you come to, it’ll start to wear off. You need to just find a way to push through it. You lean forward, grabbing the counter for support as you lift yourself up, groaning as your leg feels like it has the worst Charlie horse of the century. You keep pressure off it as you get fully to your feet, your heart thundering through your ears. The whole room feels off and it’s starting to make your nauseous.
You groan and pull out of your phone from your pocket. Your vision takes a second to focus on the screen as you go to your recent text thread, hitting the call button.
“Hey, it’s Jason. Leave a message or don’t.”
“Seriously, Jay? Answer your damn phone.” You huff into the phone. “The fucking was attacked. I’m hurt and CADMUS took Gar, Conner, and Krypto. Call me.” You hang up the phone, rolling your eyes before you start texting him.
You: Gar kidnapped, hurt, check your voicemail shithead
You let out a sigh and pull up Dick’s contact whose voicemail is now full. You grit your teeth before letting out a scoff. You pull up Kory’s number and that goes to voicemail. What is with these people? Can’t anyone answer a phone? Everyone has their phone attached to their hip, constantly on it but now there’s an emergency, everyone conveniently can’t answer? You grow more annoyed as you start making your way through all of the Titans. Donna, Dawn, Hank. You even try Rachel and not a single one of them can answer the phone either.
You nearly chuck your phone across the room. What the fuck are you supposed to do if you can’t get ahold of anyone to help? The boys could be getting tortured or killed right now and you’re stuck here, no backup. You’re all alone and hurt. The panic sets in as your hands start to shake and tears burn the back of your eyes. Your nose grows warm and you have no idea what you’re supposed to do. Your breathing quickens as the room starts to spin. You can’t do this on your own.
But, then your phone starts ringing, Donna’s name appearing on the screen.
"Hey—"
"Where are you?" You rush your words, wiping your eyes with your sleeve. "I need help, Gar was kidnapped with Conner and Krypto. Dick isn't answering the phone."
"Slow down, what happened?" Donna stops, looking around the street.
"Gar, Conner, and Krypto were kidnapped. We were attacked last night by the people looking of Conner." Your throat feels raw like sandpaper.
"Where are you?" Donna starts walking quickly.
"Still in the tower, they used s tranquilizer on me? I guess I don't know. I just came to."
"Stay there, do not move. I'm on my way."
"Thank you." You let out a breath, the smallest bit of relief coming over you. At least Donna called back.
You pocket your phone and you need to get yourself straightened out. You'll explain everything to Donna but you want to be ready for whatever Donna will come with to help them. You have to be ready.
You limp over to the fridge and grab a bottle of water, taking a few sips of it to ease the cotton mouth. The water is cool and helps perk you up a little bit. It helps the panic subside a little as you take a few deep breaths before you start limping to your room.
You grab new clothes to change into, getting a look at the damage a tranquilizer dart can cause. There's a deep bruise covering the majority of your thigh and you wince at the sight of it, understanding why it actually hurts to walk. It sucks and it hurts, but you’re honestly relieved that's all there is. Tranquilizers used for wildlife, something like a tiger for example, can kill people. You’re not really sure what type they used or the dosage, but you feel lucky to not be dead right about now.
While you change and grab your knives, you can't help but feel the guilt seep into your bloodstream like an infection. It's there and tugging at every part of you. You had them. You were holding your own just fine and you got that glimpse of Gar. That split second and it made you pause. You should have been able to take the last two. You should have been able to help Gar. And the more you think about it, you should have used your powers.
You were just so scared to use them. A part of you think the only reason you’re even still here right now is because they didn't know you have powers. Gar does. He made it obvious and maybe that's why they left you for dead but not him. And you think you should have tried because trying is better than nothing. You could have made a barrier around you and Gar, around the counter of some sort, maybe. You could have done something to try and protect all of you. And the more you think about it, the more the anxiety creeps in like the reaper waiting for you to finally cave in. Because, you think they would have taken you, too if you used your powers and you would have been held captive three fucking times. You don't think you would survive a round three. And you should have been able to save Gar, regardless.
The guilt is suffocating.
Donna comes up the elevator two hours later. You’re sitting in the living room, an ice pack to your leg while your phone is glued to your hand. Your eyes are trained on the text thread with Jason, several of your messages fill the screen from the last few hours. You chew the inside of your cheek and flip to Dick’s text thread, it looks similar to Jason’s.
“Y/n?” Donna calls with hesitance.
“Here.” You call, your voice flat.
Donna walks over, looking around the tower and seeing glass, blood, and knives covering the floor. “Are you okay?” Donna gets a look at the bruise across the right side of your face as you look up at her.
“Yeah.” You nod, keeping it short. “We have to save Gar. And Conner and Krypto. I’m fine.”
“What even happened?” Donna looks to the windows, every single one of them shattered.
“They came in through the windows first, started attacking. I don’t know. We had the alert for the roof but they came in before we could do anything.” You shrug, grabbing the ice pack as you stand up.
“And they took them but not you?”
You shrug once more and you get a distant look in your eyes. “Guess so, I, uh, I didn’t use my powers. Maybe that’s why. It’s CADMUS, we saw them earlier when we were out.”
“You saw CADMUS and you and Gar didn’t call anyone?” Donna almost yells.
You narrow your eyes. The last thing you want right now is to be told you fucked up. You’re very well aware of that right now. “Does it fucking matter? They were here within ten minutes of getting back and none of you answer your fucking phones anyway.” You let out a scoff and you hang your head for a second. “We tried.” You look back at Donna and Donna lets out a sigh.
“Okay,” Donna runs a hand through her hair before putting a hand on her hip. “You’re positive it was CADMUS?”
“That’s what the truck said and some woman came in. I don’t know what she was saying. They shot me with a tranquilizer so I was out of it. But, we have to save them. Who knows what fuckshit they’re doing to them.”
Donna pauses for a second and if it’s CADMUS, the two of you are gonna need some help. The others aren’t answering your calls and to be fair, the last time you all spoke, you were screaming at most of them. But, that’s not an excuse and Donna knows something is up. She hasn’t been able to reach Dick either.
“You’re gonna think of a plan, right?” You ask and there’s a hopefulness to your voice as you knit your brows together. As upset as you are with the Titans, Donna showed up and she looks worried. You have no choice but to rely on her.
“Yeah,” Donna nods. “I’ll start calling and trying to get some backup, we’ll need it.” You give Donna a soft nod while Donna pulls out her phone.
Before Donna can start making calls, she gets a phone call herself. You watch her carefully as Donna answers. Her brows knit together as she says Rachel’s name and you nearly roll your eyes. Not because it’s Rachel but because by the way Donna said her name, there’s something else happening. Everything is really crumbling around you right now.
“Rachel?”
“I think she’s in trouble?” Donna questions. “Have you heard from her?”
You blink at Donna. “Nope.” You pop the ‘p’. “Haven’t spoken to her since that day.”
“Right,” Donna sighs. “Well, we’ll need backup anyway so…we have to go help her.”
You let out a sigh, looking up and then back to Donna. “What about Gar? We know for sure he’s in trouble.”
“We can’t just walk into CADMUS by ourselves. We need help. Come on.” Donna turns on her heels, walking towards the elevator.
You let out a groan but limp quickly after Donna, catching up to her. You aren’t a big fan of the idea but Donna might have a point. If the four of you last night were no match for CADMUS, you and Donna won’t stand a chance even entering the front entrance. You hate it because Gar is in trouble right now and you going after Rachel means that’s more time CADMUS has with Gar. But, you’re given no choice in this matter and all you can do is follow Donna to the car and hope you’ll have some sort of plan to save Gar.
You and Donna start your drive to some place called Elko Diner and the ride is quiet. You keep your stare out of the window, thinking. You replay last night over and over, picking apart everything you could have done better. It’s not making you feel any better, you’re pretty sure it’s making you feel worse which at this point, a part of you thinks you deserve.
Donna glances over at you a few times, the silence between you feeling a little unsettling. In the short time you were at the tower together before everything went to shit, she heard you talk a lot. You were always talking to either Gar or Jason but you’ve been silent for an hour. Donna gets it, beating yourself up over everything that went wrong.
“You know it’s not your fault, right?” Donna finally asks.
You snap your attention to Donna. “Mhm, yeah, just…” You let out a scoff. “Wasn’t enough again.”
“You guys didn’t stand a chance against CADMUS. There was nothing else you could do. We’ll get the boys back.”
“Yeah.” Your word is short and quick. “Hope so.” You chew the inside of your cheek and you aren’t going to talk about the inner workings of your head with Donna. This is a three-hour drive to this diner. You can’t sit in complete silence the entire way so you’re going to try and talk this shit out. You’re going to have to trust Donna which means talking and letting some shit go.
“You were wrong, by the way. About Jason.” You change the subject, putting the spotlight on Donna.
“You’re still going on about that.” Donna lets out a sigh.
“Obviously.” You roll your eyes. “It was Rose. Gar and me found the footage and it was her. Like I said, not Jason. And I needed you to know that.”
“Rose? How did she even know any of that?”
“Her dad, apparently. She’s been working with him the whole time so all of us got played.” You look over to Donna who looks completely lost. “It’s a long story but yeah, that’s a thing. We don’t know how he knew anything though but…ya know.”
“Guess I owe the more annoying Robin an apology.”
“You all do.” You state, rolling your eyes.
“Hey, who else would have been?” Donna tries to defend herself.
“Doesn’t matter, he went to the roof and was gonna jump off but you’re all so self-absorbed that none of you cared to even offer an apology. Dick hurt your feelings so you got mad, fine but you all should have been nicer to Jason. His feelings and innocence were never any concern of yours.”
“We aren’t self-absorbed.” Donna lets out a scoff. “You don’t know us well enough to even have that opinion.”
“You made it obvious. If anyone would have done that shit, they wouldn’t have deserved to feel the way Jason did. It hurt your feelings what Rose did and that’s valid, but it never should have led Jason to the roof. Even now, you’re defending your distaste towards Jason when I’m telling you how he felt. Self-absorbed.” You look over at Donna with raised brows.
Donna clenches her jaw and maybe there is a point to be made with what you’re saying.
“Okay.” Donna says reluctantly. “We all could have handled it better. We owe him an apology.” Donna glances to you who still looks displeased. “He’s not….that…bad.”
You let out a laugh with Donna trying to get the words out in a single sentence. “He isn’t, he kind of reminds me of Dick sometimes. I think that’s why they butt heads so fucking much. But, yeah, you should apologize and kiss his ass.”
Donna scrunches her nose at the thought. “I am not kissing his ass.”
“It would be funny.”
“To who?”
“To me. I need a good laugh.” You let out a breath.
“I am sorry. You’re not Jason but…I’m sorry.” Donna glances to you for just a second.
“Thank you.”
You look in front of you and you let it go. Gar comes back into your thoughts and you worry all over again. You hate worrying so much. It’s exhausting and it clouds everything else in your mind. You can’t focus on worrying about him when you still have a two-hour drive ahead of you. You don’t have a plan. You have nothing right now. So, you try your best to push the guilt down and the thoughts of Gar away and start asking Donna questions about missions and the rope. You figure that might actually be a good distraction and maybe one of the stories will spark some sort of idea to help you save the boys.
You and Donna finally get to the diner, exiting the vehicle. You both take a second to look at the outside. It's in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by farmland. You’re beginning to think this is the beginning to a bad Children Of The Corn movie. It's a bit unsettling and the diner looks rundown, old. But, Donna looks at you, jerking her head towards the diner before you both start walking and head inside. You're met with not only Rachel but Kory and Dawn as well. You look at everyone, already confused as to what the hell is going on here. How did they all know to meet up here?
"Is this real or am I going crazy?" Kory asks.
You look at Donna. "Am I still high?" You let out a huff, everyone snapping their attention to you.
"Tranquilizer, long story." Donna adds in.
There's a short pause before Dawn nods. "This is definitely real."
"Why are you following me?" Rachel's voice is snippy and annoyed as she looks at Donna. Now that's also weird. What the fuck is happening?
"Following—what? You called me and told me to come here." Donna states.
"No, I didn't." Rachel looks to you. "Why are you here?"
"Called Donna for help then you called Donna, I was there." You give Rachel a look of pure annoyance.
"My check engine light went out." Dawn states before looking at Kory. "Kory?"
"I'm just here for the donuts." Kory shakes her head.
Just then, the door opens again and everyone turns to see who could possibly be walking into this diner now. Your jaw about hits the floor as everyone else looks at the man who's dressed nicely.
"Bruce?" Donna asks.
"Holy shit, you're Bruce Wayne." You let out a chuckle. "I'm definitely still high." Donna gives you a disapproving look.
"I'm so glad you all could make it." Bruce says.
All of you gather around, taking seats at different tables. You sit on one of the tabletops behind Kory, just looking past her to see Bruce. You all take turns filling Bruce in as to what's happened over the last few weeks. You all fill him in about Dick and Deathstroke, the events that lead to you and Jason being held captive as well as the detail to that. Bruce sits with one leg over the other, carefully listening to everything the five of you have to say.
"This is troubling news." Bruce says. "And no Conner or Gar?"
"No." Donna answers sadly.
"CADMUS has them." You state. "They attacked last night."
"What?" Kory gets a look of sadness as she looks at you.
"Hence the bruise." You gesture around it.
"I am aware of what's happened to all of you. And I...I'm sorry." Bruce states. "Lies can tears a family apart and hope been living in the aftermath of that. And it's a...lonely place to be. But this was a...this is...a family of choice. Breaking apart was a choice. In the light of this news, I'm asking you to make another one. To come together. Walking away from bad feelings is easy. It's much harder to take the blow, and come back for more, but that's what a family does. If you can unite, you can face any threat. But if darkness arrives while you're still cast apart, I truly believe that none of you will survive.." Bruce pauses as he stands up, the whole room growing eerie. " If you won't protect one another, who will?" Bruce asks with a nod before grabbing a biscuit and leaving the five of you to yourselves.
"That was fucking morbid." You mutter, understanding why Jason and Dick are so pessimistic right about now.
"Did he just leave?" Donna asks.
"Yup." Dawn answers.
"So, let's get this straight. Bruce Wayne somehow miraculously arranged for us all to meet in this diner in the middle of nowhere to mansplain us into putting the Titans back together?" Kory asks.
"Yup." Dawn answers as she gets up and puts her coat on. "I think that's exactly what just happened." Dawn lets out an exasperated sigh.
You’ve never met Bruce Wayne, you only know about him. He's always seemed a little weird to you but right now, that proves that thought. He just organized for all of you to get together, somehow. Gave you some weird ass speech and then leaves. He doesn't actually offer any help or anything. Just leaves.
Suddenly, there's a sound of static coming from the front of the diner. All of you get up and head to the front. You see an old TV, static on the screen before it switches to a news report.
"Today's top story. Two men escape Kane Jail, apparently aided by imprisoned Detroit police detective Dick Grayson. More details on this story and more on our next news update."
"That sure explains a lot." You let out a scoff. "He left us to get himself arrested."
"I'm sure he didn't do on purpose." Rachel snaps.
You roll your eyes in Rachel’s direction before looking to Donna.
"You got to be fucking kidding me." Donna states, her voice annoyed. She shakes her head and jerks it towards the door. "Let's go, Y/n."
"Finally." You let out a breath and follow Donna right on her heels out of the diner, the other women close behind.
"Donna, wait." Rachel calls.
"Troy, where are you going?" Kory asks.
"Back to San Francisco." Donna turns around to face them, you following suit.
"To save Gar and Conner." You quip.
"No, we need to save Dick." Rachel argues, stopping Donna before she can turn around and keep walking.
"Dick's on his own." Donna yanks her arm back.
"What is wrong with you?" Rachel asks.
"Me? Look, I know Dick Grayson, okay?" Donna starts. "He put himself up on that cross. Nailed himself to it. Now he's gonna have to take himself down, too."
"Donnas right. Whatever Dick's doing, he's doing to himself." Dawn agrees with Donna.
“He saved your life, Y/n!” Rachel turns it to you, knowing she won’t get anywhere with other women.
“Okay?” You shrug. “And Gar is like, important and didn’t get himself kidnapped on purpose so? You’re on your own here, buddy.”
“He saved us!” Rachel grows angrier with your response.
“Who the fuck cares!?” You snap. It doesn’t matter that Dick saved you. Gar needs your help.
“You should. You want to let him rot away in federal prison?” Rachel’s voice is offended this time.
“Yeah, kind of, Rachel.” You state with ease.
“How can you say that!?” Rachel yells. “He’s done so much for us!”
You roll your eyes. Yes, Dick has done a lot for all of you. But, so has Gar. Dick saved your life but Gar is your best friend. Gar is there for you and you’re there for him. Dick did this to himself. The choice is easy.
“Okay, guys—“ Kory tries to break it up.
“Dude, I, from the bottom of my heart, could not give less of a flying fuck right now.” You nearly breaks out into a fit of laughter. You’re so flabbergasted that Rachel is actually choosing Dick right now.
“How can you say that?” Rachel’s brows pull together as if she’s hurt by what you said.
“With ease, actually.” You quip, shrugging your shoulders nonchalantly.
“We’re saving him, you don’t get a say,” Rachel crosses her arms over her chest and you’re done. This is ridiculous and you were already mad at her but this is the edge.
First of all, Rachel is not your keeper. Rachel doesn’t get to decide what you do or don’t do. And second, this isn’t her decision. Rachel doesn’t get to control what everyone else gets to do. Donna is with you on this one and you kind of want to see Rachel try to stop you.
You limp closer to her, getting in her face. “Fuck Dick Grayson and fuck you for being his fucking lap dog all the damn time. You know, I defended you a lot against Jason but I get it now.” You give Rachel a sinister laugh. “It doesn’t matter what Dick does because you’ll always be up his ass. He dropped us from a fucking skyscraper, he left me and Gar in charge of some random ass dude knowing people would be looking to hunt him down as if we had any business dealing with that alone. He got himself arrested on fucking purpose. Fuck Dick Grayson, got it?”
“Y/n, I think you need—“ Dawn starts, putting a hand on your shoulder.
You shrug her hand off. “Calm down? Fuck that. I’m sick of being calm about this shit. It’s always about fucking Dick.”
“As opposed to it being about you?” Rachel challenges.
Your eyes widen, shaking your head as if you can’t process what Rachel just said. What the fuck is she even talking about? “It’s not fucking about me, Rachel. This is about Gar!” Your voice echoes in the parking as you toss your arms out to the side. “CADMUS fucking took him! What part of that doesn’t seem urgent to you!? They hurt him and they took him and you’re so wrapped up about some guy that got himself arrested on purpose! That you left, may I remind you! None of it would have happened had he left Jericho alone but he didn’t. He started all of this shit. And now Gar is kidnapped and for all we know, they’ve killed him and your wounded puppy ass wants to help Dick!? They are probably torturing Gar right now because of his whole tiger thing. Over my cold dead body am I going to save Dick before I save Gar.” You huff in Rachel’s face.
This is insanity. It’s the last day at the tower all over again. Trying to get anything through Rachel’s head is worse than explaining rocket science to a brick wall. It is infuriating. You don’t get her at all. The whole time Rachel defends Gar and is on Gar’s side but when it fucking matters, it’s about Dick? You can feel your blood boiling and you’re already on edge. You’re not dealing with Rachel’s shit today.
Rachel stands her ground, unphased by you. “You’re saying I’m a wounded puppy?” Rachel crosses her arms, letting out a bitter laugh and you can feel yourself falling into the pits of rage. “You’re still mad about that stuff with Jason! That’s why you don’t want to save Dick. We’re going to get Dick and there’s nothing you do about it.”
“That’s it!” You bring your arm back, connecting your fist with Rachel's face as the other women jump in. Donna pulls you away while Kory checks on Rachel whose nose is bleeding. "Jason was fucking right about you!" You scream, fighting against Donna to let you go. "You're fucking nuts for actually siding with Dick right now!"
"You punched me!" Rachel screams, her nostrils flaring.
"Yeah, I fucking did! I punched you because I won't be telling Gar that you really wanna put him in last fucking place and I punched you for how you fucking treated Jason! You were the one that started that shit that led him to the roof! That punch is for my boys, so fuck you!"
“I didn’t choose Dick over Gar!” Rachel tries to take a step forward, Kory blocking her away from you. “You think because Jason helped you train behind Dick’s back that you take on anyone or anything.” Rachel snips. “You think you can do whatever you want, just like Jason! Look what happens when you do that!”
“First of all, it wasn’t behind Dick’s back. We were trying to be productive unlike you who took out your jealousy on Gar! Yeah, he told me what you said to him, asking if he growled at Dr. Light. I will defend those boys against the entire world. Dick has done a lot for us and while he pisses me the fuck off sometimes, I do like him and respect him but this was his choice.”
“Jason treats everyone like shit! Why can’t you see that!? He’s not even here! He left and you’re still defending him! Dick did what was best for us! How can you even stand her yelling at me!?” Rachel screams at you.
“You also left, Rachel! The irony is that somehow, amongst all of us standing here, I was the one that stayed! I chose to stay and everyone else bailed!” Sam screams past Donna, her throat growing raw. ”But I get why Jason left which is why, even when I wanna be mad, I can’t be. Because I get it. Gar and Jason are everything to me and I don’t know why that’s such a fucking problem for you. You're literally standing her talking shit about Jason when he's not even here and then choosing to get Dick out of prison instead of saving Gar's life! You're insane!"
“This is life or death! You should have used your powers! If I were there--”
“Here we fucking go. Round and round and round we go. Where we will stop on the Rachel has a fucking hero complex stop? Everyone deals with shit differently but the only way you can defend yourself is with your powers.” You glare at Rachel. “You have nothing besides your powers. Powers get you fucking killed and kidnapped, as has been proven in the last twenty-four hours. If you were there, you probably would have hurt Gar!”
“Fuck you!”
“Not even in your wildest dreams, Rachel!” You snark back.
“Gar deserves better than you! Okay, you wanna go find him and then what? You leave to hunt down Jason, right? You sound just like him, you train like him, you went through the same things. Both of you think no one likes you which is true! You guys put everyone in danger without ever thinking about anyone else! He left you! And for Deathstroke’s daughter!”
You let out a sinister laugh and it’s such a low blow. You don’t get how Gar is actually friends with her if this is how she treats people when she’s mad. And you hate to admit that comment actually hurt a little.
“We are friends, Rachel.” You grit your teeth and you’re done arguing about this shit. “I don’t know why the fuck you care so much about us. Is it guilt, maybe? That you aren’t going after Gar? Do you feel guilty so you’re trying to make me feel guilty enough to hunt down Jason instead of Gar so that way if Gar dies, you can again, point the finger at me?” You shake your head, disgusted with this whole argument. “Gar deserves better, you’re right and guess what. It’s why we’re friends. I chose Jason, despite him going with Rose but that’s none of your fucking business. We are friends, all of us. So, if you wanna keep throwing my feelings in my face, fucking fine. But I can live with my decisions, can you?” You let out a sigh as you stop fighting against Donna. “I’m done fucking arguing about this shit with you. It’s not fucking worth it. Do whatever the hell you want but I’m going to save Gar.” You turn away from her and start walking towards Donna’s car.
Rachel lets you walk away, letting the argument simmer in the air. It’s more than Dick being there for her and saving her. Gar has done that, too and she does care about him. Gar is her best friend, too. But, there’s more to it and she was hoping she wouldn’t have to come clean about it but it doesn’t look like she’ll get so lucky.
“That was…” Donna start.
“Dramatic.” Kory mutters.
Rachel stands there with wide eyes and decides to come clean. “I’m having dreams again.”
You pause, turning around to face Rachel.
"I was at Dick's funeral. Deathstroke killed him. Look, I know that I sound crazy. I know that. But Dick needs my help. And I really need yours. Please." Rachel’s voice is pleading, almost breaking as she asks for help.
You put your hand on your hip because this is ridiculous. Rachel's demeanor might have changed and it's obvious she is honestly worried about Dick. You understand dreaming about someone and seeing them die. It is terrifying and Rachel's dreams sometimes mean something. But at the end of the day, Dick got all of you into this mess in the first place. That's still fact. Gar being in danger is still fact. You don't know about Dick, not for certain. And it seems Dawn and Donna are on the page.
"I'm sorry, Rachel." Donna says. "But Gar needs us more." Donna finishes before she walks back to the car and gets in, you follow right behind and get into the passenger seat. "Do you feel better?" Donna looks to you, sarcasm in her words and clearly annoyed by the whole argument.
"So, much, I didn't realize how much I had been holding in. I feel so much better now. Gar is right, talking about things helps."
"I don't think what you did there was talking but sure." Donna shakes her head and sees Dawn coming to the car. "Alright, backseat." Donna looks to you and you don’t protest. You do as told and climb into the backseat while Dawn opens the passenger door.
You buckle your seatbelt while Donna puts the car in drive and takes off. You lean forward between the women.
"Well, I would like to apologize for my ranting and airing out some of my dirty laundry, that was weird of me. Uh, yeah, so sorry for that." You nod at the two of them, offering an awkward, closed-mouth smile.
Donna can't help but let out a soft laugh and Dawn gains a smile.
"Just don't punch Rachel again, okay?" Donna asks.
"I will try very hard not to." You let out a sigh. "So, uh, what's the plan?"
"We're going back to San Francisco. And we're gonna get Gar back. We can look at the footage and run facial recognition. One of them has to be able to give us information." Donna explains.
"Sick." You nod, you’re just relieved you're actually going to be doing something to save Gar now.
You lean back in your seat, the adrenaline dump from your argument with Rachel starts to hit and the tranquilizer has some lasting effects. The exhaustion starts to hit you, slowly and then all at once. But you feel safe in the car with Donna and Dawn. It's getting late now so you decide to just rest your eyes, just until you get back to the city.
When you wake up, you're back at the tower. You don't have anywhere else to stay so the three of you make your way through the elevator. You didn't clean anything up before you left so there's still blood and glass across the floor. You were feeling a lot better after yelling at Rachel and having Donna and Dawn on your side. But that feeling fades as you look around the tower. It feels emptier now than it did that day everyone left. You don't like it. But you excuse yourself to your room and try to get some rest until the morning.
Sleep did not come easy. And when it did come, it was broken up between different nightmares. There was a nightmare about you being dropped from the skyscraper, one version Dick dropped you and in another Jason dropped you. Another nightmare was Gar being killed by CADMUS in front of you. Another was Jason killed by Deathstroke and the last one that finally convinced you to not sleep anymore, was both boys being killed. By Deathstroke. That was enough for you.
It worked out timing-wise because Dawn and Donna were both awake, and the tower had been cleaned up. That's when Donna fills you in on the plan. Donna found a guy with facial recognition and they're gonna go to him. You’re told to stay in the car because he might recognize you and they're guessing CADMUS only left you because they thought you were dead or would be. You aren't a big fan of the idea but you also get it. If he recognizes you, he'll know what's up and it could end worse for all of you and Gar so you go along with the plan. You grab a quick breakfast before the three of you make your way to the man's house.
Once at the man's house, Dawn turns around in her seat, looking at you. "Okay, what's the plan, Y/n?" Her voice isn't exactly asking but more looking for verification that you aren't going rogue.
"I promise I will not leave the car." You promise them.
"Good, now stay here." Donna has a stern voice as the two older women get out of the car.
You let out a sigh and slide back in your seat, unbuckling your seatbelt. You take out your phone and go to your messages with Jason. You still haven't heard from him. So, you try again. You have nothing else to do while you wait for the women to do their thing and you’re actually getting really worried. There has to be something going on. Even if Jason is just trying to enjoy his new relationship with Rose, he would call or text given the entire CADMUS situation.
The line trills and you chew on the inside of your cheek. You think he won't answer. He hasn't in a few days anyway but you wait patiently, almost holding your breath. And then he picks up.
"What!?" Jason yells.
"Uh.....hello to you, too?" You question.
"What the fuck do you want?"
Ouch. You pause and it hurts with him yelling at you. You didn't do anything. Does he suddenly not care about Gar? About you? What is with everyone?
"Dude, what's going on?" You ask hiding the hurt in your voice.
"Nothing, what?" Jason huffs.
"You sound upset? What's going on, Jay?"
"Why the fuck did you call?"
This is not a good time. Jason is on his way to leave, to go somewhere else that's not here. Things, in his opinion, were going pretty well with Rose. He was making a solid effort and letting her in. They were doing some drug busts and it was fun. It allowed him to escape from the tower and all of that bullshit the other Titans put him through. But, he's just had a blow-up with Rose because as it turns out, she's been lying to him the whole time. He let another fucking person in and all she did was lie and use him. This is not a good fucking time for him.
"I've been trying to reach you for like three days." You drop asking him what's wrong, he's clearly not going to tell you.
"Bullshit, I haven't gotten a fucking call from you at all."
"I literally called you yesterday, hold on." You take the phone from your head and screenshot your call log, sending the screenshot to Jason and then taking a screenshot of the texts, sending them to him. "I just sent screenshots."
Jason takes the phone from his head and looks at the messages. There he can see that you have not only called him about a hundred times but you’ve also texted him at least, an entire page full of messages. He reads them over, seeing none of them in his actual message thread with you. A lot of them are question marks or begging him to call you back.
"What the fuck?" Jason yells into the phone.
"I told you." You state. "What? You didn't get any of them?" You furrow your brows and you knew something weird was going on. Jason wouldn't abandon you and Gar.
"Fucking Rose probably deleting them." Jason lets out a scoff ad he's not even sure if he's more mad at himself for trusting Rose or at Rose for lying to him.
"Ah," You nod your head. "She had your phone?"
"I wasn't with it the whole fucking time. She wanted us to spend time alone, without our fucking phones. Know why now, huh?" Jason's voice breaks and he's just so fucking mad. This is why he doesn't trust anyone, it's why he doesn't show anyone those parts of him. They use him and exploit him. They take and take and take but never give. It fucking hurts. And you’re unusually silent on the other end. "What?" Jason sounds completely exasperated.
You hesitate, almost debating on telling him but that wouldn't be fair. "Did you get our texts about her? Mine and Gar's?"
"Nope."
"Shit, I'm sorry, Jay. She working—"
"With her fucking dad? Yeah, she just fucking told me. She was using me and lying to me this whole fucking time!" Jason sniffles and you swear a part of your heart just broke for him. Why would anyone do that to him? He doesn't deserve it. That explains why he's so mad.
"I'm really sorry, Jay," Your voice is quiet. "We didn't know she had your phone." You pull the phone away and switch it to FaceTime. You figure maybe if you see each other face to face, it'll help calm him down. You can give him a smirk and a grin, he'll play along. Maybe it'll help. It would help you.
Jason goes along with it, seeing you in a car, a nasty bruise decorates your right cheekbone, the bottom of your eye socket a lighter shaded bruise. His heart plummets with the sight of you. He feels more anger start to flood his blood. He's going to find whoever hurt you. What the fuck did he miss?
"Not your fault." Jason lets out a huff and immediately drops it. He doesn't want to talk about it anyway. "What the fuck happened to you?" The worry creeps into his voice as he asks.
You see Jason's nostrils flare and a part of you definitely forgot the bruise. You shake your head. "Uh...right, um," Your brows furrow as you look down and Jason knows you do that whenever you don't want to tell him something. He's picked up on it. "CADMUS came and broke into tower. They took Gar, Conner and Krypto." You look back to the camera, letting out a breath.
Jason shakes his head, closing his eyes for a second and for just a fraction of a second, he feels relief because they didn't take you. He can’t imagine you getting taken three fucking times. That’s insane but you’re hurt anyway and now they have his best friend.
"What the fuck does that mean? They took them?"
"Uh-huh." You nods. "I was spamming the fuck out of you. They broke in, guns. Um...one of em, uh, ya know. I lost." You let out a scoff as the guilt floods your system again. "Donna and Dawn are trying to get answers from a guy now."
"What the fuck." Jason lets out a quiet sigh.
Rose had the idea yesterday to shut their phones for the day, and not be bothered by any outside bullshit. Jason went along with it, he kind of thought you and Gar weren't talking to him, he hadn't heard from you. Maybe you were having fun alone or something. But, apparently, it was all Rose and he feels so stupid for all of it. For not seeing through it.
"Are you okay?" Jason’s eyes scan across her face and he wishes he were there.
"Dunno." You chew the inside of your cheek, your brows knitted together. "I tried so fucking hard but it wasn't fucking good enough, ya know? They just kept fucking coming, Jay. There were too many and I ran out of kitchen knives. They shot me with a tranquilizer and left me for dead. But, they...but they took Gar. He shifted into a tiger and maybe that's why. I didn't use my powers. I wasn't useful, maybe. I don't know but it fucking sucks. I couldn't--" You cut yourself off, feeling the lump grow in your throat. "I couldn't save him. It wasn't fucking enough and I wasn't fucking good enough." Your voice breaks.
Jason wants to personally hunt down every man from CADMUS that attacked the tower. For taking Gar and for hurting you and making you feel this way. That’s his best friend they took and it’s bullshit. And you fight like hell, he knows for a fact you tried your absolute hardest but it’s CADMUS. He doesn’t need to have been there to know whatever you did was enough.
"Hey," Jason calls. "Don't do that shit, alright? It's not your fault. I wasn't there but I know you fought like hell because you did for me. That's fucking enough." Jason pauses and you nods softly. "I'm fucking serious. You grabbed the kitchen knives?" Jason chuckles. "Smart, guessing you fought until the tranquilizer kicked in?"
"Still tried after." You let out a soft laugh. "My arms and legs just wouldn't move."
Jason lets out a soft laugh. "Exactly so it's not your fault." Jason’s face softens slightly and it does make her feel better.
Seeing Jason face-to-face is helping in general. His hair is messier than usual and his eyes are red, but there’s something comfortable about seeing him that you haven’t felt since he left. He knows exactly what to say and he laughs about the kitchen knives. No one else would but it makes you feel better. Not fully, but enough. And you do really miss him.
"Thanks." Your smile falls and you clear your throat. "You okay?"
Jason shrugs and starts pacing. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"It's okay if you're not. She fucking sucks for lying to you."
"Yeah, no shit." Jason offers a half-scoff half-laugh.
"I'll beat her up if you want." You offer Jason a smirk to try and cheer him up.
It seems to work because Jason gives you a laugh and a smile. "Yeah? Think you stand a chance of all sudden?"
"I punched Rachel, I could take Rose, now."
"You punched Rachel?" Jason lets out a booming laugh and he can't believe it. He would have loved to have seen it. "Why?"
You shrug. "She made me mad and I was exhausted. I just couldn't fucking do it anymore." Your eyes widen, as if to be mocking the situation.
Jason has a grin and he does feel a little better. "She attack you?"
"No," You shake your head. "She just yelled at me. Kory and Dawn held her back while Donna held me back. It was all very dramatic, you would have loved it." You give him a teasing smirk. "But, hey, we need you, Jay. Gar needs you. We can't do this alone."
Jason's smile falls and it still hurts, the way the Titans attacked him for shit he didn't do. It's still an open wound and he's not sure it'll ever heal. They don't want him and he's tired of being in places he's not wanted.
"Look, they don't want me."
"Donna texted you last night." You state.
"Fucking seriously." Jason groans and he's so mad at himself for not seeing through Rose, for not knowing it was weird not to have heard from you and Gar, for not being the one to text either of you. Phones work two ways. Jason just thought you were kind of done talking to him, living it up as a couple or whatever. You weren't interested in him anymore since you and Gar had each other. He should have sent at least one more text when he didn't get a reply from either of you.
"Uh-huh. She said she would try and I guess Rose deleted that, too."
"What the fuck, man?"
"So, uh, you gonna come?" You ask hesitantly and Jason sees the worry across your face.
"Gar's my best friend but I don't—"
"Jay, he needs you, please." You plead with him and you pause for just a second. "I need you." Your voice goes quiet and you do. This whole thing would have been a little easier if he were around, even just to talk to.
Jason lets out a sigh. He can't say no to you even if he feels unwanted around the other Titans. You look desperate and you’re always there for him. You’re the one person who doesn't give up on him and he knows he can't let you do it alone.
"Alright, fine." Jason nods his head. "I'll help get Gar back and then I'm gone."
"Deal." You smile sadly at him. You know it'll be temporary but at least he'll come back to help. You all definitely need him.
Jason shakes his head. "Hey, seriously, you gonna be okay?"
"Yeah, uh....just...traumatized." You let out s scoff. "Shocker, huh?"
"Hey, look, fuck those assholes, we'll show them who they're fucking with."
"Thanks, Jay," You offer him a soft smile. "I don't know. Feel a whole lot better once we sort it out."
"I'll find a way, I swear. Text me where you need me and I'll be there. I'm not fucking staying but I won't let you do this alone."
"I knew I could count on you."
"Always, babe." Jason gives you his cheeky grin.
You almost hate to admit it, but you kind of miss him calling you that, too. You have to laugh, looking away from the camera.
“Shithead.” You mutter and Jason chuckles on the other end. He misses hearing you call him that. With anyone else, he’d be annoyed but not with you. "I'm still sorry about Rose." You look back to the camera, smile erased with a look of empathy.
"Eh, you were right." Jason shrugs a shoulder.
It hurts. Jason hasn't been in many relationships. With living on the streets and his home situation, it was never something he ever had time or energy for. He's had heartbreak, sure, but this one is different. He was in a stable enough place for something and it ended like this. Broken trust and more betrayal. It just really hurts a lot more than Jason really wants to admit to anyone. It feels a little embarrassing even.
"I wish I wasn’t though. That's not fair to you and you deserve someone who's not gonna treat you like shit and lie to you. You deserve better always."
He’ll never understand why you are the way you are with him. But, he’s thankful for you.
"Thanks."
You look to the window, seeing the women coming back. "Hey, they're coming back, I'll text you and call you okay? Just, uh, see if you can pull a string with Bruce and get on a flight."
"Who says I'm in Gotham?" Jason looks around him and he doesn't know how you know that but he can't say he's surprised. Of course, you would know where he went.
"It's home." You chortle. "Where else would you go?"
"Yeah, alright, fuck you."
"Mmm," You hum and decide you'll leave him with your game of chicken. "Maybe I'll get you lucky one day." You smirk at him and Jason shakes his head, eyes closing for a second before the looks back to the screen. The comment throws him off because shouldn’t you be...with Gar? You let out a laugh and seeing him confused and flustered never gets old. "Alright, get a fucking flight, Jason."
"Alright, don't do anything stupid until I get there." Jason nods at you, his cheeks a tint of pink.
"Course not, I only do stupid shit when I'm with you." You give him a wide smile. "See you in a bit, Jay." You hang up just as the women enter the car.
"Okay, we need backup." Donna starts. "No Rachel, no Kory. Nothing from Jason or Rose either."
"Jason's coming." You scoot closer to the women, the both looking back at you. "It's a long story, he wasn't getting our messages. I just got through though, he said he'll come to help Gar. I just gotta text him what we know."
"Okay, good, this is good." Donna says.
"Nice work." Dawn gives Sam a kind smile.
"I am very annoyingly persistent." You scrunch your nose.
"Let's get a plan together then." Donna smiles at the two of you before putting the car in drive and driving off.
