The short of it

I’m leaving the Watcher fandom. Don’t worry, I won’t be unfollowing anyone, but I will be ceasing the creation of art for Watcher and interaction with the community at large. Thank you all for this short but meaningful ride. Feel free to unfollow me if you were here for Watcher art, and for those who stick around…

The long of it

It’s been a couple of days since a certain channel dropped an announcement that imploded its fandom. It was… a mess. A lot—and I mean a lot—of us didn’t handle the news well, and we made that known to everyone. The impact was so massive that YouTubers, who are nowhere near the niche that Watcher operates under, covered the situation, and some of them explained very well why the decision went over so poorly. Meanwhile some of them made fun of the situation, and some were just there for the clicks, but that’s the cycle of YouTube drama for you.

With the amount of ears waiting for even a peep out of their mouths, Watcher couldn’t ignore the backlash any longer and released an apology video three days after the announcement. By all accounts, it was a pretty good response. The reception was mixed, but it was definitely more well-received than their first video, and they actually listened to their fans who gave them valid criticism over the sudden shift to a streaming service.

However…

For as much as I appreciate their response, I still can’t find it in myself to continue following Watcher. I really mean it when I say this disaster soured any enjoyment I had for them. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch them again for a long time without thinking about this situation or remembering the people they have hurt, even if unintentionally, through their poor execution of a business decision.

Do I believe they could’ve pulled off moving their content to a streaming service? Absolutely. However, so many factors doomed this decision and their announcement from the start from them believing that $5.99/month was “affordable to everyone” (seriously?) to them insisting that this was for the fans even though the fans have vocalized that they were never there for the high production value. They were there because the three guys who run Watcher were enjoyable!

I feel like if they had been honest about the fact that the TV quality they are aiming for was more for themselves than anyone–hell, it’s the mission statement in their About page, and, I don’t know, considered the idea that $6 is not cheap, especially for international fans, people wouldn’t have gotten so angry at them. Now, there are still numerous issues plaguing this business model, but to go through all of the arguments would require a separate post, and I’ve already expended too much energy on this situation. Needless to say, Watcher has burnt their bridges, and it will take a while before they can build them back up again, let alone get people to trust them enough to cross them.

On the other hand, I can’t blame Watcher fully for my departure. Despite my heavy disagreement with their initial decision, I understand why they thought this decision was a good idea in the first place as YouTube is a very unstable career path, and it would rather hurt its creators with its relentless demonetization, censorship and restrictive guidelines than give up just a tiny amount of its profit. Besides, they’re in control of their content, and they could do what they want with it even if their fans disagreed with them.

Speaking of the fans, my god. The situation revealed a side of the fandom that I never thought I would see, but in hindsight, I should have seen it coming. To see fans resort to anti-Asian racism and death threats so quickly was extremely heartbreaking, and as an Asian person, it made me feel very unsafe and unwelcome in the community.

Moreover, using Steven as a scapegoat to absolve Ryan and Shane of any wrongdoing was unfortunately a very common response. Yes, he is the CEO, and yes, his series being centered on traveling and eating expensive food really doesn’t paint him in a positive light, but need I remind you that RYAN AND SHANE ARE GROWN ADULTS. They’re the founders of Watcher, and they both have to agree to the initial plan for it to be implemented. You can’t assume that Steven was a boogeyman terrorizing your precious little boys just based on a 15-minute video. You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

All of this to say that the initial announcement combined with how the community reacted violently to the announcement really nipped my interest in Watcher in the bud. It was a shame too because I really did love Watcher, and I still do. Had it not been for the time I invested in following them, I wouldn’t have made great friends, regained the joy in creating art–even reviving a hobby/skill that I assumed was long dead, and had a reason to be able to laugh or smile even in terrible days. I truly am grateful for Watcher, and I do not regret ever getting into them at all. However, I think it’s time for me to go.

Thank you all for this weird and wonderful ride, but at some point, you’ll have to hop off. I just didn’t expect to hop off it so soon.

I love how there's one Richard hater who's doing rounds on everyones blogs, leaving stupid asks. Using the exact same sentences about the exact same topics.

You gotta wonder if they truly dislike him - and it's fine if they do, whatever - why would they put so much time and effort into him? Why would you want to constantly see the person of your dislike and talk about him? Is it truly hatered, or is it masking something else?

Either way, I think they're long overdue in quitting this nonsense. At least on Richard-centric blogs.

99% of us are not blind to Richard's faults. 99% of us do not keep him on some sky high pedestal. He's a broken person just like the rest of us. Just like you, dear hater. But just like in all of us, there's also something beautiful in him, and that's what we can openly admire.

Find new purpose. Find peace. Stop wasting your life on leaving anonymous negativity because at the end of the day, it only affects you the most.

Hello 👋 I think in this fandom, we're somehow used to unimaginative and impertinent anons - better to ignore them altogether I guess 🤷‍♀️

I said it once and I'll say it again (probably until the end of time), it is absolutely beyond me why people put their precious time and energy into trying to bring Richard down, painting him like THE worst guy who ever existed and in general spending time on a person they seemingly don't like. It's like with everything else - you don't like it, you don't watch it/don't listen to it/just click away/unfollow certain blogs. It's that simple and brings you inner peace if needed. I sometimes do wonder if there's a superior motif to it, if Richard portrays something which people can't seem to face or are uncomfortable with (his openness as a man, which isn't that common maybe, or his honesty that yes, working in a group with 5 other individuals can be one hell of an exhausting ride everytime you enter the studio). Either way: Just don't send nasty comments or hate. It doesn't change anything and just comes across as desperate and very mean spirited or just shows how little research you do before you type. This as a whole is not a good look energywise, that's for sure.

Richard is neither a saint nor a villain, and he doesn't have to be either. People don't fit into drawers with specific labels most of the time, let alone in the creative world, and that's what makes them interesting. Richard has a lot of interesting sides to him, lovable quirks, made some very questionable choices and had very rough times resulting from it. You should never put people on a pedestal because they're just people like you and me, but I think he learned a lot in his life and even more important, he was open to learning, to better himself and get himself the help he needed.

And I think that's admirable.

about gene: hes apprehensive about him at first, as he is with anyone who Talks to archie, but i think he comes to really like him. gene just oozes respectable older brother energy and i think simon is drawn to that. much like jj, something about gene makes him feel like a kid again, in the sense that someone else, someone older and more mature can Deal with things and simon can just kind of breathe.

about cassidy: he does not like this man. naturally, of course. cassidy is an outlaw, he's killed and robbed and hurt and simon doesn't care waht kind of "moral code" he's following, he doesn't want him in his home. still, i feel like simon can sense that a lot of cassidy's demeanor is a front. he sees all the PTSD signs and trauma responses. he knows cassidy has gone through awful things, but that doesn't make him less dangerous. if anything, it makes him more unpredictable.

archie:

about gene: BIG BROTHER!!! i think the consensus about gene to everyone is just. gene is their responsible big brother. archie thinks he's really cool and he likes calliope too. i think gene is intimidating at first, but archie sees right through it. growing up how he did, he's learned to clock when people are actually malicious and he never got that from gene. he always knew he was kind and soft under his exterior

about cassidy: he thinks cassidy is so fun. like with gene, he doesn't sense any malice in him. archie knows full well what kind of things cassidy has done, but his intuition tells him theres more to it. archie is a very forgiving person (maybe to a fault) but he knows cassidy isn't a bad person. i think he and cassidy would have a lot of fun. he would take horse riding lessons and ask all about his jewelry and overall just make cassidy feel more like a Person. archie tends to have that effect on people.

gene:

about simon: right away, he clocks that simon works way too hard for someone his age. he's surprised he doesnt have gray hairs at the ripe age of 23. still, he appreciates what he does. he knows what it's like to have someone close to you constantly throwing themselves into dangerous situations for the sake of others and he sympathizes with the toll it takes on simon. if he's able to bear just a little bit of that burden, he'd be more than happy to.

about archie: his unrelenting enthusiasm is. sometimes unnerving. but still, he thinks he's a really cool kid regardless. he likes what archie does-- working behind the scenes to keep people safe. even if it's technically illegal, gene finds it admirable. he just. he loves how pure archie's heart is. it triggers something almost parental in him. he understands why simon is so deeply protective of him. archie is not the kind of person you come across often.

cassidy:

about simon: at first, he sees simon like a mini gene. cold, calculated, and cautious and of course, he understands it. he's a criminal, after all. hell, he doesn't trust himself! but after spending some more time with simon, i feel like he comes to appreciate what he does like most people do. and i also feel like he can sense simon reading him like a book and that makes him Deeply Uncomfortable. for both of their sakes, he repects him from a healthy distance. he would be lying if he said simon's disdain for him didn't hurt a little bit, though.

about archie: if gene is the responsible older brother, cassidy is the crazy fun one. he loves archie's energy and loves to get into trouble with him (and prank gene of course) and it just makes him feel so free. he didn't have a very good childhood so being with archie almost feels like a remedy for that where he can just have fun without worrying when montana is going to find out and berate him for it. and, again, he feels especially protective of archie. he sees his innocence and pure heart. he wants to do anything he can to preserve it, since he wasn't able to do that for himself.

see, you'd think cat person. because simon is cat-coded. BUT NO! he actually prefers dogs because of how loyal and energetic they are. he had a big great dane when he was a kid and he LOVESSS big dogs. the only reason he doesn't have one is because he lives in a tiny apartment BUT. one day he will. he shall get his dog.

for archie: big city or beach day?

similar to the stars vs sun question, archie LOVES the sun. it's gotta be the beach. he also LOVES to swim and will literally just spend hours in the ocean floating in the waves and looking for cool shells (to bring back to simon, who is calmly reading under an umbrella, of course). he already spends day and night in the city, the beach is a welcome change of pace

for gene: teleportation or flight powers?

hmmm. for this one i'm going to say teleportation. gene is a busy man, and he has most definitely thought of what it would be like to be able to be everywhere at once. plus, it would make it a hell of a lot easier to catch criminals (cough cassidy cough) and would honestly just be kind of fun. one could argue that all of the above applies to flying too, BUT i think the thought of being so high up in the air with no structure beneath him makes him... uncomfy.

for cassidy: past, present, or future?

THIS IS EVIL AND I LOVE IT.

it has to be present. 100% present.

the past is something cassidy thinks about the least amount possible. he deeply DEEPLY regrets things he's done, not to mention the copious amounts of trauma this man has gone through. if he pretends none of it happens, it makes living with it just a little easier. (no cassidy. don't do that.)

the future also deeply frightens him. in his line of work, there isn't exactly a good track record for,, being Alive. he's lost many friends in shootouts and to the gallows, and every day he lives in fear that he won't make it to the next.

the present is just the happy middle. he takes life one step at a time. if he doesn't, he isn't sure how he could go on. he finds value in focusing on the now, not on what did and could happen. is it healthy? no. but is it something he does to survive? absolutely.

Cass I wish I could easily explain the Dream situation but it's the culmination of literal years of him mistreating and grooming people. The TLDR of EXCLUSIVELY the current insane events is.

-> Nicolas Cantu, voice actor for Gumball Watterson (the Amazing World of Gumball), was for a moment a minecraft youtuber under the handle JunkyJanker. For years the main thing people talked about wrt his minecraft career was that he beat James Charles in Minecraft Monday. However, he's been in the creator space and thus would have access to Minecraft creators.

-> In iirc 2021 Nicolas Cantu called Dream's merch shitty on Twitter. Dream's merch was in fact shitty, but Dream and his fans made his life hell over it, including taking shots at(?) his dead dog(?) Events I was not present for since I very intentionally keep Dream away.

-> more recently, people come forward with leaked snapchat messages where Dream is being sexual with minors. An adult he was Also being sexual with leaks snapchat messages confirming that the account and typing style were his. This is barely addressed until the last few weeks.

-> Dream REALLY BADLY tries to defend himself from the pedo accusations on stream. It doesn't go well for him. Shortly after, a ton of his remaining "friends" from the DSMP finally outright unfollow him. Cue the wave of "war is over" tiktoks from fans of the content creators who unfollowed him.

-> Directly after failing to defend himself on stream, Dream posts a tiktok "unboxing" a minecraft t-shirt that has the text "I love miners" on it. This is quickly deleted, but his lawyers are doubtlessly sweating. Nobody knows why the fuck he'd post that.

-> Nicolas Cantu calls him out for making pedo jokes while under accusations.

-> Dream posts a blackmail video in response to this. Said video is from an Uber ride where Cantu, then 19, is visibly drunk and manic, and Dream is clearly pressing his buttons. In said video he calls Dream a faggot. When Dream keeps pushing him, Cantu punches him.

-> Dream clearly expects this to be a hate mob against Cantu. It is not. People are mostly wondering why he, an adult well above the drinking age, is in an Uber with a drunk 19 year old. And why he's recording said drunk 19 year old. People call him THE FUCK out because he clearly was sitting on this video for some time.

-> While Dream is failing to handle this situation he's made for himself, a MCYT Burner account posts leaked dms and recordings from his snapchat of him moaning at a minor. The owner of said account files a police report in the state of Florida because said leaks apparently contain CP.

Saya always knew when someone wasn’t from around Orre. They were easy targets for scammers and tended to get swindled more often than not. Along with that, most tourists were... fairly ill-equipped when it came to Orre. It was a harsh and unforgiving region, even to those born into it.

She wasn’t one to give tourists a hard time usually, unless they were asking for it. Tourism was good for the region, and driving those people away would only push Orre further into obscurity.

The streets of Pyrite were bustling with people. Performers looking to earn some extra cash, folks riding out on their hover vehicles, and others wandering towards the colosseum in hopes of seeing a good battle today. Saya had been wandering the town with no real goal in mind, beyond getting some replacement parts for her own hoverbike at some point. The idea of spending money on herself like that made her want to gag, but it was necessary to keep her shitty bike from breaking down even worse.

It was during her wandering along the streets that someone caught her eye - someone clearly not familiar with Orre, and likely from an entirely different region altogether. Was it really her problem? Was she supposed to just babysit all tourists to Pyrite? Why the hell would anyone even come here? Agate was a much nicer spot. Of course, it did suddenly become her problem when the dude went to cross the street, unbeknownst to the hoverbike roaring down the road. Some bikes were noisy, if you wanted to make them that way, while others were totally silent. This one was one of the latter kinds. Ugh.

“Goddamn man, watch out!” Saya scolds, taking hold of his arm and yanking him back to safety - just in time. If she’d been any later, the poor guy would have gotten totally flattened. The hoverbike speeds past, stirring up dust and dirt in its wake. The denizens of Pyrite seem unperturbed; clearly this is a common occurrence in the town. “Y’gotta watch out fer fucker like that. People love speedin’ around. They don’t care if they run someone flat, y’know?” Saya crosses her arms now.

“Y’don’t seem too familiar with these parts. What y’here fer? If y’don’t mind m’askin’. Orre ain’t a popular place with th’tourists.”

uh oh rearranging my house (this blog)

A little PSA for this blog going forward! As you may have noticed, it's been a good long while since I've made or reblogged any posts actually regarding studying and academia. I haven't been very active at all in studyblr in general for a long while now. There's lots of reasons for that, but most importantly - I have decided not to run this blog as a study blog anymore, even if it was just in appearance more recently. I'm putting this out here mostly because I'm planning to change my URL and general blog appearance - and I'm planning to post more frequently on here with other stuff, mostly general reblogs and maybe some art and original posts about all kinds of stuff in the future. So - if posting about generally nerdy interests (TTRPG, sci-fi, fantasy, maybe some horror), queer stuff (butchness! lesbians! aros!) and whatever I come up otherwise still sounds interesting to you, hell yeah! Glad to have you along for the ride. If you came here for the study content though - I might make a sideblog for it in the future but that's still in the stars. Until then, this blog will not contain any more - and if we're mutuals in the studyblr sphere, I'm gonna say a very fond goodbye as I will also be unfollowing a lot of y'all who post mainly about studying and academia. it was any time now where he’d find out.

she didn’t do a good job hiding the fact and was practically a super fan of his behind closed doors. she met vinnie through her brother max, who became one of vinnie’s closest friends, and since her and max were so close, she’d often join them on hangouts.

hence why the three of them were in paris.

the two boys had left y/n at the airbnb to go do god knows what, leaving the girl to study and finish up her schoolwork. she didn’t want to keep the boys from having fun so she insisted that they go on without her.

but two hours went by and she became lonely.

grabbing her bag, she called an uber to take her to the skate park, where she assumed the boys would be. putting her phone down on the bathroom counter, she quickly fixed up her hair before going to wait outside for her ride. how was she supposed to know that they were actually in the streets of paris taking pictures and posing with cigarettes? she wasn’t omniscient and sure as hell couldn’t read minds.

once she got to the skate park, she walked around aimlessly, her black shoes carrying her feet across the entire park, looking for them.

she saw the silhouette of two boys, one seated while the other one was skating on the half pipe.

“hey!” she waved, squinting to try and make out their faces. the boy seating looked up from his phone while the other one came to a complete stop.

wrong people.

“oh, sorry! my bad, i uh, thought you were someone else.” she awkwardly apologized, letting out a dry laugh and walking off, thinking over what to do in her head.

where the hell could they be?

she felt the back pocket of her ripped jeans, feeling for her imaginary phone. she pulled out her bag, looking through the contents as she assumed she just put it in her bag and forgot.

then she realized that she left her phone on the sink of the airbnb.

fuck.

she panned over, checking to see if the two boys were looking at her, but saw that they weren’t. pacing back and forth, she tried to take deep breaths and keep calm.

curse vinnie for being so damn heady. two hours without him and she already longed for his presence.

“hey, um. i’m sorry, could i borrow a phone? i need to make a call.” she chirped, raising a hand up and bringing attention to herself. she hoped that they spoke english.

the brunette boy stayed seated while the edgier blonde one, stopped his board and walked towards her, holding out a phone for her to use.

“thank you.”

she quickly dialed vinnie’s number.

she couldn’t remember max’s, despite being his sister, and yet she knew vinnie’s like the back of her hand. all those nights that she read those familiar digits and just wishing that she could have the courage to call him.

she silently prayed that he’d pick up, but he didn’t.

“your call has been forwarded to an aut—“

“fuck.” she huffed, realizing that he wouldn’t answer since it wasn’t a number he recognized. the blonde boy snapped the phone out of her hands, clearly annoyed as he walked away.

what the fuck do i do now?

“hey, wait!” she watched the two guys walk faster before the skated out of her view.

“fuck.”

she didn’t know what to do and her brain was so fried from studying that she didn’t have the power to move. she remembered the boys talking about going to the skate park and hoped that they hadn’t gone yet.

maybe if i just wait here, they will come..

i’ll just wait for a few minutes.

dropping to the side of a half pipe, she clutched her purse to her chest and sat cris-cross, her eyes closing ever so slightly from the fatigue before the sleepiness consumed her.

max and vinnie arrived an hour later at the airbnb, throwing their stuff on the counter and beginning to raid whatever food they could find in the fridge.

“y/n, we’re back!” vinnie heard max call out as he went to town on the leftovers he found, hungrier than ever.

“she’s not here.”

“huh?” vinnie asked, his chewing paused and his body gone still.

“she isn’t here and her phone is here.”

“shit.” vinnie sighed, trying his best to conceal the panic that was rising into his body. “well where do you think she’d be?!”

he looked at max before the two of them realized.

“i’ll get her.”

there she was, her hair sprawled out against the ground and her graphic tee shirt tucked into her jeans. her mouth was left open slightly and small snores left her body.

she’s sleeping.

the boy felt bad yet was amused by her state. being unconscious in the middle of a foreign country is not the safest thing for a girl like her to do.

“y/n?” he whispered, leaning down so his necklace swung. “hey.”

she woke up to the soft shaking on her shoulders, opening her eyes and feeling the hard surface beneath her, pressed against her cheek.

“vinnie?”

“yeah, i’m here. you really need to be supervised at all time you know?” he smiled. her eyes were half open and she was fading in and out of sleepiness.

“i’m tired.”

“yeah, me too y/n. let’s go.” he held onto her hand, lifting her up so she was standing. the girl wasn’t ready for his next move as he swiftly picked her up and carried her bridal style back to the car. his small grunts and footsteps were music to her ears in that moment.

peeling open her eyes, she looked up at him. “so pretty,” she murmured. her eyes danced over his appearance and the boy tried to hide his blush. before he could reply, the girl was knocked out in his arms.

now vinnie knew.

Katrina is a pretty bad friend, i guess theres a reason for so many including the girls from the traphouse friend group cut her off. I dont like Stas but its pretty obvious theyre transactional friends who just use each other . She recently followed Shea again, she unfollowed her before and now what? Will she be buddy buddy with her too? No one talks about it but just because she’s dating Sam doesnt mean she too isnt riding their coattails and social climbing. No one would know her if it wasn’t for them. And about Colby, i dont get why he keeps these girls in rotation but the more he does the more indifferent i feel about him because they’re not nice girls. Neither Shea or Stas are actually nice, they’re in it for the fame and attention of it all. For example, Colby gets arrested and the first thing Shea does is tweet “please be okay”, who was that really for if not his fans? He gets blacked out drunk and the first thing Stas does is post it and make sure everyone knows because she needs to deliver, does he call them out though? No, he continues his will they wont they narrative.

I don't necessarily think she's a bad friend, i only think this transactional friendship is a real thing.

If i were kat, who's been dating sam for 7 years or whatever timeline they have, i would be very picky with my friends too. Especially since her and colby started spending more time together, i saw a lot of girls approach her, especially stas who, from what another anon told me, didn't get along with kat and vice versa. I would say Kat's selective more than she is a fake or a bad friend. As i said before, she does have her own "to blame" thing since Sam helped her platform grow. And about the unfollowing/following thing, it's just something childish that i would probably do. If i don't interact with certain people, i don't have a reason to keep them "close"

As for the other girls, Colby's at fault for feeding them. He posts, he makes a big fuss out of stuff and then the girls have nothing else to do other than blindly accepting the attention they receive for free. Afterwards, it's obvious they will act and do stuff for the hell of it, because it's not necessarily them who started this. I don't understand why he doesn't stop certain behaviour and certain things from coming out on the Internet, but if they find it entertaining, mostly they will think that we find it entertaining. Which is not the case for most people, me included.

I love that they have fun together and don't waste their youth, but there are things that should be kept private. This way there's no need for "LA is full of fake people who use us for fame", bro, u deliver the fame to them, u can't just expect them to give it back to u since u drew attention on them
