Hey, how are you? Thanks for leaving this ask ─ I'll probably make it longer than it should be.

Talented musicians. It just fills me with hope, knowing the levels of talent a person can achieve. Can I ramble? I'm going to ramble, sorry.

I can't explain, but when I realize how cohesively these two solos were played, and one must imagine there is no sheet music! that this was done live, and it will never be done the same way again ─ I'm blown away by the sheer talent of the man. (solos one, two).

2. Accents. Just a little something I've always had an interest in. (You know the works; Scottish, Irish, British, midwestern, southern, etc.)

3. Clear skies. Blue skies. Sunny days.

4. Letters. Exquisite penmanship. Just the act of written communication existing as a whole. Stamps, wax seals, the whole shebang.

5. Ice cream! And all the different ways you can eat it. :D

Chapter 4: One For The Road...

@pepperonyscience @authortobenamedlater @thefinaljediknight @p0tat0-g0ddess @ionlymadethissoicouldleaveanask @helix-enterprises117 @purple-purple-pink-purple (Out of character, just real quick I appreciate everyone's patience with the delay to the campaign. The bug that blew through the ToBeNamedLater household had myself an ATBNL down pretty hard. We are doing much better, so back to it!) STORY CONTINUES BELOW: Picking up where our story left off, and advancing the story timeline slightly, all of you have evacuated your dead bunker and are on a dusty remain of a highway. Your group is a motley collection of fangirls @authortobenamedlater @thefinaljediknight @p0tat0-g0ddess. You also have one cattle wrangler @ionlymadethissoicouldleaveanask, a pilot (latecomer @purple-purple-pink-purple who was sleeping in the back room of the bunker for the last six months because that's just how much naps moms need to catch up) and a human survivor @helix-enterprises117 with an overpowered cybernetic fist that makes him look a bit like a fiddler crab. Despite the time being high noon, the sky has an orange haze on account of the extra particulates in the atmosphere, the telltale signs that a nuclear winter could be coming. Off in the distance you can see the burnt out remains of a city with the barely legible roadsigns indicating it is the town of Pueblo, Colorado.

Very little seems to be moving on the surface. You've seen a few scavengers, mostly crows, vultures and carrion eaters but nothing else of significance. You have heard a few rustles of *something* that seems to be following you, but haven't been able to make it out. The roadway is littered with the remains of burned out cars, the bodies now just skeletons or ash. The air is cold and dry on account of the reduced solar gain, lack of precipitation, and shortened days for October. You are all wearing matching desert camouflage uniforms (DCU's) surplus from the Desert Storm era. They blend in fairly well to the environment. For equipment you each have a matching pack in the same camouflage pattern. Inside each pack is the following: a bedroll, a poncho tarp for shelter, some waterproof matches, some water purification straws, a change of clothes and extra underwear/socks, a hand crank emergency AM/FM radio receiver and flashlight combo, a first aid kit, compass, map, spare boot laces, some fishing equipment and some paracord. You each also have a few quarts of water apiece along with some survival lifeboat rations, enough to last a week or so with careful use. For weapons, you each at a minimum are equipped with a survival knife and sheath. You all managed to scavenge a few other weapons in the bunker. For firearms there are two Glock handguns of mismatched calibers (9mm and .45 automatic respectively) and limited ammunition for each of just three preloaded magazines apiece due to weight and size limits. There is a singular AR-pattern rifle with iron sights and two magazines. The rest are carrying either a baseball bat, crowbar or tire iron as they choose to do so. These arms are distributed among the group to those that are best trained in their use. Overall, you aren't in the worst condition weapon-wise, but it's clear that scavenging ammunition and being selective with your engagements is going to be critical for now. An extended firefight could draw a lot of attention and burn through your at-present limited ammunition needlessly. Your orange avatar is riding in @authortobenamedlater's pocket. He hasn't said much lately other than the direction to go is northwest. The town of Pueblo is presently to your due north and you are just on the outskirts around the dried remains of Lake Minnequa. Your little group also has a fold-up DeLorme topographical map with the words "Candy Mountain" written in purple crayon and an X crudely drawn over the Almagre Mountain range approximately 50 miles to your north. This would seem to be your destination. The question is, how are you going to get there? It's 50 miles of mostly desert with not much there between Pueblo and the base of the mountain. That's a long way on foot with limited supplies. There appear to be three obvious possible avenues. One is the BNSF railyard in the middle of the bombed out remains of Pueblo which is filled with who knows what. Maybe transportation. Maybe looters. Maybe monsters. There's also the Pueblo airport out east which may offer some options but is in the opposite direction for travel to your destination. You might find something there, or then again it could be a red herring. Circling around Pueblo to the rest there's the aptly named suburb of Pueblo West. Doesn't seem like there's much in the way of transportation choice there, but they do have a number of shops that may yield important supplies. You're sure that you wouldn't be the only survivors thinking the same thing.

There may be other options yet open to you but there’s a problem. Your group is split on which direction to go. The limited weapons and deciding who got what proved to be incredibly unpopular and onerous in the extreme. It's clear that leadership is going to have to be decided on before following whichever path.

Other names for my AU that I scrapped.

Halo Reborn - Too generic. And I like generic.

Halo Resurgence - Too vague, but it does fit the idea of it being "A new and unique retelling of Halo". Still, I could do better.

Halo Nexus - Sounds cool, but makes zero damn sense.

Halo Resurgent - I returned to 'Resurgence' but altered the tense to see if it worked. It didn't.

Halo Extreme & Halo Overdrive - They sound like the name of Shovelware sports-based Halo spin-off games. Nope.

Neo Halo - Halo is already sci-fi, "Neo" is redundant.

Ultimate Halo - Derivative of Ultimate Marvel for obvious reasons.

Nu-Halo - Why is Halo a Nu-Metal Band? No.

Halo Reloaded - HEY WAIT. I like this one; it's cool, it fits the idea/concept of my AU being a 'fanmade reboot and retelling' without being too vague or derivative, AND it makes sense since Halo is an FPS and 'Reloaded' adds to the 'military & gun-motif' of the genre. Let's use this one!

CHAPTER 3: The Fall

The weary survivors, having gathered what meager supplies they can muster, gather about the Black Box. Instead of the avatar shimmering into existence, this image pops up with his voice narrating the projected images.

“It began in 1995 when SETI discovered an unknown object in the orbit of Neptune. This unknown object passed through the outer solar system, passing by and scanning the various outer planets before continuing on its orbital period out of the solar system with a calculated return in approximately 80 years.”

“This information was at the time classified as above Top Secret, but the occasional leaks still got out. You may remember the Heavens Gate suicide cult who thought that there was a UFO hiding in the tail of comet Hale-Bopp in the same year that they thought was there to rapture them to heaven? They weren’t entirely wrong about the presence of alien life. They were wrong about their intentions, and how a rapture works.”

The image shifts to this new one.

“After only 50 years, the alien starship returned in 2045. This time, it visited the inner planets and headed directly for earth. All communication and contact efforts failed as it approached our planet. The militaries across the globe manned their battle stations and prepared for the worst.”

The image changed again.

“As the visitor rocketed past earth, it released approximately one dozen smaller modules that impacted around the globe. In addition, it launched a flak storm into polar and counter-rotation orbits at varying altitudes. This flak and the shredded remains of space debris obliterated most communication and GPS-navigational satellites, crippling our response options. Watch the movie ‘Gravity’ if you want to get the idea of what ‘Kessler Syndrome’ is.”

The image shifts again showing a burned out hellscape.

“As the modules impacted earth, they simultaneously released a variety of biological weapons that eliminated almost the entirety of human life on the surface while discharging hunter-killer robots that laid waste to everything in their path. The remaining militaries of earth fought valiantly to fend off this new enemy, but conventional weaponry was ineffective against the alien tech.”

“We averted total annihilation by launching an overwhelming nuclear strike on the bases. While many missiles were shot down or shredded by the orbital debris cloud during the apogee phase of flight, ultimately the invasion was neutralized but the earth was ravaged. Overall, approximately 3000 megatons of whoop-ass were released.”

“There are a few pockets of survivors around, but by and large the surface is clear of human life. The alien bio weapon was terrifyingly effective but was only virulent for a short period of time before it burned itself out and died due to a lack of hosts…it also allegedly smelled like pumpkin spice by the victims before they perished.”

The avatar gives a sheepish look and crosses his arms before continuing.

“So, uh, I know this is a lot to take in but there’s more. The virus didn’t exactly kill every human it contacted. As turns out…well, the virus killed everyone but it also turned only redheads into zombies.”

“So…yeah. There it is. We got a post nuclear world full of redhead and ginger zombies and radiation mutated monsters while the rest of humanity was more or less eradicated by a pumpkin spice flavored super virus just in time for Halloween. Oh, and the zombies follow pretty much standard zombie rules, bonks to the head only takes them out.”

“Soooooo…questions so far or should we also discuss alleged safe refuge at ‘Candy Mountain’?”

When I'm playing a video game, sitting here totally alone, not playing co-op or anything, if something good/fun/random happens, I say out loud some variation of, "Chat, check that out. Can you believe that just happened?" like I'm streaming on Twitch or something. Then I laugh, just 'cause. 🤷‍♀️😂

My tol and smol ships. I've loved those who are NOT tol and smol, of course, but I just have a particular love for those who are.

3. Managing to 100% a game.

I just have 4 more achievements for Detroit: Become Human to go and I'm about to start the playthrough that should get all of them. 🤞😣🤞Dead Rising has 2 left but they're considerable: 5 Day Survivor and 7 Day Survivor. 5 Day Survivor means playing for 12 hours straight without dying once and without the ability to save. 7 Day Survivor is the same but takes 14 hours. They're both literally real life endurance challenges. Even still, I'm working up a strategy and plan on trying it one day. Just got to make sure I have my meals already planned and ready and that my family knows what I'm doing. I just love the game so much, I'd like to see if I can do it. And I'd like the Laser Sword you get for 5 Day Survivor (it's a lightsaber without the name, lol) and the boxer shorts with heart on them for 7DS. And just to know I was able to figure out a way to conquer them both.

I'll never be able to 100% the Halo Master Chief Collection simply because there are a lot of achievements requiring co-op play. Even without that, I have no desire to try and play LASO and I can't do the ones for "play the entire game on Legendary under 3 hours" even on the game that I'm absolute strongest at (Reach). I can play fast or I can play Legendary, just not both at the same time. 🤷‍♀️

I honestly never thought I'd beat even one modern game on Easy and now being able to complete or nearly complete 4 of them has made me so happy and proud. (I have a bit of a tremor in my hands so I have to adapt my play to account for that.)

4. The Halo theme. 'nuff said. When the game has written itself into your DNA, this song is part of your blood and bones.

5. Funny game glitches/random occurrences. Anything that's not really supposed to happen but then it does and there's something just so silly and ridiculous about it? Yeah, that's my jam!

Sara Ryder, the Pathfinder from Mass Effect: Andromeda, spending an entire gaming session, crouching over and talking to everybody's, um, belt buckles, will NEVER not make me laugh! 😂
