Can we just talk about the fact that Avitas Harper
Spoilers for all the AEITA books including the end of Sky
Helped Laia break Elias and Darin out of Kauf by giving her information.
Befriended a Scholar slave, Bee, when he was stationed at Kauf presumably as a Fiver which would have been when he was like 12-14 years old, and ten or so years later she still remembered him.
Made sure Helene would eat even when she was really stressed out and busy with work.
Kept Dex's secret about his sexuality, literally, did not say anything to anyone.
Kept Helene's secret about her ability to heal people.
Trusted Helene's judgement but also wasn't afraid to challenge her when he felt it was necessary.
Helped Laia escape by cutting the ropes binding her because he knew Elias, who was Helene's best friend, would never forgive her if she harmed Laia. Even though he was face to face with his brother in that moment he still put other people first.
Went through hell serving the Commandant even though he must have hated her because he had to know more about his brother, who he'd gone to school with but presumably didn't know was his brother at the time.
Makes sure Helene doesn't get hurt even though she's being stubborn. And when she does get hurt, he refuses to leave her, by standing up to the freaking Nightbringer.
Disobey's Helene's orders to collapse the tunnels because he could never leave her behind.
Makes sure to tell Helene she is beautiful, with or without a mask and scars. This is huge, do you know how many people would judge someone for a facial difference?
Fights beside Helene, time and time again.
Brings Helene the tea she needs because he knows she will be too embarrassed to get it, and is kind to her when she's obviously uncomfortable that he's had need to get this tea before.
Kept Mirra's secret.
Took Helene to the same room he went to when he found out how his father died, because he knew what she would need after losing her sister.
The way he handled finding out how his father died. It must have wrecked him, and yet he held himself together and even let the information be used.
Tells Helene to make the promise to her nephew and is also very sweet to the baby.
And after all of that, all of those things, he still didn't believe he was good or kind or had any of his father's better qualities.
He deserved so, so much better. Helene deserved better. Elias deserved to spend time with his brother. I will never forgive that ending because it ruined the whole freaking series for me in the end.
It's ok to let characters live. It's ok not to kill everyone. It's actually ok to let readers finish a book with tears in their eyes but also with their hearts full.

Avitas harper didn’t have to die? It was completely unnecessary. He deserved better and so did Helene.

A Baker And Her Lover
“Avitas, where the bleeding hells are you?”
“I’m here, my love.”
Harper walked through the front door of their small home, taking in the sight of his wife completely butchering a loaf of bread in an attempt to slice it.
“Skies, Helene, what in the hells are you doing?”
She muttered something under her breath about bleeding overseas merchants and their idiotic ideas. The remark was followed by a stream of colorful curses.
“You’d ought to be one of those bleeding merchants, seeing as you curse like a sailor.” Avitas approached her, deftly grabbing the knife from her hand and sweeping her into a kiss. “That should shut you up.”
Even though they had been married for a year, Helene still marveled at the passion of their kisses, the wonderful knowledge that she was his and he hers.
Though she certainly couldn’t tell him that, lest his head blow up to the size of a pregnant woman’s bleeding uterus.
“The whole Skies-forsaken city will be attending the Moon Festival tonight. Not to mention Ilyaas and Laia are coming to visit. And the bleeding merchants couldn’t do their bleeding job, and deliver the bleeding flour.”
“I hope the bleeding flour isn’t too red from the bleeding merchants bleeding on them all day.” Avitas chuckled. “I do hope I do not start bleeding too.”
“Honestly Avitas, you really are a-”
“Bleeding idiot? No need to say any more. I know you too well.”
“I was going to say “amazing”, but if you don’t want the complement, then fine.”
“I take “bleeding idiot” as a complement so long as it comes from you.” He had moved closer to her now, whispering the words into her ear.
A shiver of delight ran through her.
It was amazing how, of all the circumstances, of all the possible lives, she had been given this one. She could have been made a soldier from an empire far away, constantly fearing for her life. Or a slave, destined to never take a true breath of freedom. But the Skies had granted her a life with the man she loved, a peaceful life. One in which she could visit her family and friends as often or as little as she liked. And when all else failed her, she could simply sit at home and bake bread.
She turned away from Avitas, stealing back her knife and continuing to slice the loaf that sat before her. Her demeanor had become calmer, resolute.
“Now bleeding get back to work with festival preparations. And if any of your thickheaded students think to help you, please, allow them to do so.”
“Whatever you say, sir.”
As he walked away, chuckling as he went, she threw her knife at him. He caught it effortlessly and flung it right back at her. Then, he left without a backward glance.
They had been training in combat for years now, under the insistence of the commander of the Empire’s reserve force. Dex’s soldiers were likely to never be used - it was not as if war would ever approach the Empire - but they were incredibly skilled and were undoubtedly ready to lay down their lives for their people.
As their training stretched on, Helene and Avitas had become so skilled in the art of combat that they were granted permission to assist new recruits. The two of them were natural fighters.
“Probably would have made bleeding good soldiers too,” Dex constantly reminded them, in hopes that he could convince them to join his ranks. Harper had finally caved in, and consented to training soldiers, so long as he didn’t have to commit to any formalities. Helene still wanted nothing to do with it.
She was content with her simple life as a baker with a wonderful lover by her side.
That night, as the tribes began arriving and Scholars spilled through the streets, Helene headed to the Saif caravans in search of Ilyaas and Laia.
She spotted them walking through the streets near the caravans, hand in hand.
Skies, it had been so long ago that she had fallen for Ilyaas. He had been a beautiful tribal boy when she’d first met him; cheeky, kind, mysterious. But when she had met Avitas, she realized that what she had felt for Ilyaas was a shallow thing, nothing compared to the depth of emotions she carried for her future husband.
And when she looked upon Ilyaas now, with Laia, ever joyful, she could feel nothing less than happiness for them both.
“Laia!” Helene laughed, pushing her way through the dense crowds, “Ilyaas!”
“Helene, we’ve missed you!” Laia said when Helene appeared beside her. The two friends shared a warm embrace.
“Laia, my love. How rude of you to exclude me.” Ilyaas wrapped them both in a bear hug, knocking all three of them to the ground and meriting murmured and shrieked complaints alike from those around them.
“Would anyone care to tell me what is going on?” Avitas looked down upon them in mock confusion, his green eyes twinkling in the moonlight.
“Brother, you must join us.” Elias rose and wrapped his arm around Avitas’s shoulders. “Hail, big brother. I have grown taller than you.”
Avitas shoved him back to the ground. “You are slow witted as ever, I see.”
Once Elias regained his footing, the brothers reached their hands out to their wives, in an attempt to appear even slightly chivalrous. Both Helene and Laia refused them, rising of their own account.
“You knock us to the ground, and then expect us to accept your assistance. Really Ilyaas, you will never change. Laia, you must do a better job at controlling your man.”
“She controls me just fine, in be-”
Laia wacked him on the head.
“Shall we make our rounds through the festival?” Laia’s inquiry resulted in an eager nod from Elias.
“Whatever you say Laia, love of my life, amazing in spirit and amazing in be-”
Laia wacked him again.
Helene took Laia’s arm in her own and began walking away from Ilyaas and Avitas. “They can be such bleeding idiots sometimes.”
“Yes,” Laia said, sighing, “And we love them all the more for it.”
They walked at a slow pace, giving their husbands a chance to catch up with them. Once they did, Laia decided to set out for mooncakes.
“Bleeding merchants, bleeding flour, no bleeding mooncakes.” Avitas offered.
Helene nodded in agreement, attempting to hide her smirk with a sour expression.
Laia pouted disappointedly. “Then what are we to do now?”
Ilyaas extended a hand to his wife, “Would you care to dance, Kehanni?”
Helene turned to Avitas, reaching out her hand as well. “Dance with me.”

helene and avitas deserved better
so i just finished reading A Sky Beyond the Storm and as i’m sure any fellow readers would understand, i’m absolutely heartbroken over the ending. i’m feeling a lot of emotions right now, so this might be a jumbled mess, but i just wanted to write out my thoughts.
okay i understand that the deaths were probably meant to highlight the tragedy of war and the indiscriminate nature of death, showing that anyone could die at any time and just how high the stakes were, but i can’t help but be upset. maybe it was realistic, but in terms of the story, i felt like it was unnecessarily tragic.
i’ve been rooting for Helene and her happiness since book 1. the girl has had it rough -- she sacrificed herself to serve under a man she hated in order to help her best friend run away, was ordered to hunt and kill said best friend or else suffer the consequences, and then watched her mom, dad, and sister get killed right in front of her because she failed to do so, with her remaining sister being forced into a marriage with the loathsome emperor.
naturally, she blames herself for her family’s deaths and her sister’s suffering. tragedy follows her at every turn, and the poor girl just cannot catch a fucking break. she forces herself to shut away her emotions and dedicate herself entirely to the Empire. she becomes scared to love, because it seems like anyone she loves is inevitably taken away from her. this is why she desperately tries to keep her distance from Avitas, not wanting to open herself up to more heartbreak and pain that she’s not sure she can handle.
and yet, she finds that her heart betrays her, and slowly but surely, she falls in love with him, even though it takes her a while longer to fully come to terms with it. at the end of reaper, she pushes Avitas away after their kiss, putting up a wall between them with her position as Blood Shrike. however, in SKY, she is finally able to face her feelings, which is so important to her character growth and path to healing. she took the initiative to seek out Avitas and admit her feelings to him, opening herself up to love and be loved, and also allowing herself to become vulnerable to the pain and devastation that would come with losing him.
Helene was afraid of loving because she felt that she would only lose them, but allowing herself to love Avitas was so important in helping to heal that trauma. it just feels like his death would only reinforce the idea that loving people only ends in pain to helene, which isn’t what she needed after all of the suffering she’s already experienced. i know helene seemed to be recovering after avitas’s death, but realistically, i feel like his death would’ve finally pushed her over the edge. you’re telling me that after losing her entire family except livia, then watching livia bleed out in front of her, seeing faris sacrifice his life for her, and finally, watching the love of her life die because he was trying to help her wouldn’t have completely broken her??? i thought that after livia, avitas would at least stay by her side. i thought that she’d be granted this one happiness after all of her suffering but APPARENTLY NOT. i’m upset that avitas’s death wasn’t even important to the plot, but it ruined the positive trajectory that helene was headed on.
i was also annoyed because laia and elias were able to get their happily ever after while helene just got more trauma and suffering. i’m happy for laia and elias, but i don’t like the fact that all their problems were conveniently solved with the reappearance of cook/mirra, who was thought to be dead until the very end of this book, which made it feel like she was just brought back so that she could relieve elias of his duties as the soul catcher. it just seems like he got off the hook a little too easily, considering the weight of his vow to mauth. comparing her convenient "resurrection” to avitas’s death, it just makes his death feel so cheap and unnecessary.
i guess what i’m trying to say is that if avitas had to die in order to illustrate the realistic and tragic costs of war, the same gravity should have been applied to elias’s situation and he realistically should have dealt with heavier, lasting consequences from his vow to be the soul catcher. right now, it feels like elias got a happy ending because he’s a main character while avitas, as a side character, got screwed over. i just wish they both could’ve gotten their happy endings.

A Reaper at the Gates chapter 10 :
“ You smell . . . not unpleasant,” I say stiffly. “I was simply noticing.”
“Of course, Shrike.” His mouth quirks a little. Is that a bleeding smile?
Now that’s beginning to get interesting.

Elias Veturius & Laia Of Serra
Elaia:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Before any of that, I—ah—have something for you.” He stops and lifts his hands to reveal an armlet—intricately carved with apricot blossoms and cherry blossoms and Tala blossoms, a veritable garden of fruit. Along the edges, in vivid script, he has inscribed the names of my family. Words fail me, and I reach out to take it, but he does not give it to me. Not yet.
“I wish I could live a thousand lives so I could fall in love with you a thousand times,” he says.”But if all we get is this one, and I share it with you, then I will never want for anything, if—if you—would—if you—” He stops, hands gripped so tight around the armlet that I fear he’ll break it.
“Yes. Yes.” I take it from him and put it on. “Yes!” I cannot say it enough.
Helene Aquilla & Musa Of Adisa
Helmusa:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Though I was reluctant moments ago, now I find that I want to give in to that exuberant beat. So does Musa. So we laugh and dance again. We eat a dozen moon cakes and chase away the loneliness, two broken people who, for this night, anyway, make a whole.”
