Hi, sorry if this comes out as a ramble, but your Troy ask made me rewatch the movie (for the umpteenth time, lol), and it brought a lot of old feelings back, both good and bad. The good is how much I adored the Iliad as a child and that's something that still thrives today—since I was a kid, I loved Greek mythology in general, partly because I'm Palestinian/a fellow Eastern Mediterranean, so there is a lot of overlap in our histories, cultures, customs and myths, but the Iliad has always been a favorite. Hektor is my favorite character (and I love him and Andromache), but I also have an immense soft spot for Briseis... and now to get to the bad, rewatching Troy reminded me how a lot of people erase her and her role—and her romance—to Achilles in modern retellings. Now, I'm not going to argue which Achilles ship is the best (especially because that man is a hoe, if we're being honest), I don't care. My problem is the modern erasure of Briseis and the other women in Achilles's life that are romantically entangled with him being reduced to, "He's gay, actually." It reads biphobic if you believe him queer (Patroclus too, who had many named women concubines/slaves), first off, misogynist second. He has a son with his foster "sister," Deidamia, and in some versions even married. In the Iliad especially, Patroclus tells Briseis Achilles will marry her and Achilles himself refers to her as his wife/bride, stopping a whole war when she's taken, and she's even allowed to aid in Patroclus's funeral rights. In some versions, Achilles falls for Polyxena, and tries to make peace with Troy so he can marry her. In the afterlife, Achilles chooses Helen as his wife for some reason. Just... all these women, with complex situations and feelings, are all reduced or erased in modern tellings (and usually for a man/Patroclus), and it makes me want to scream. People use the excuse of, "We don't like the romantic situation they're in," but then claim to "better" it by... erasing or reducing these women and their complex roles and feelings from the story overall? Brieseis, for example, mutually loved Achilles and saw him as a husband... he also killed her first husband and brothers, and you can argue part of her love is out of the need for survival. Yet, she greatly mourned him when he was killed, too. And if exploring this complexity is still not your yum, what about Polyxena? Wouldn't she fit the girlboss archetype of using Achilles' affections to gain his trust, before stabbing him in the back (literally)? Or Deidamia, who's young and left at home, bereft of her husband and son? Heck, try and fill in the gaps how Achilles x Hellen happened, if you must. All these women have an important role in the story, and to Achilles, that could be explored—but people don't because they dismiss what's already there or don't know anything about The Iliad outside modern retellings (mainly The Song of Achilles). So, we get people claiming things that are untrue ("Achilles and Patroclus are exclusively gay!"... in some myths, they're actually relatives/distant cousins, fun fact 😭), and acting like they fixed something by "adding" onto "flat female characters" in a way that reads inauthentic and ignorant to the source material. I get wanting to prop up one's chosen ship, it's just the hypocrisy of promising to be more progressive in one area, but diminishing the progressiveness of another, that kills me. Anyway! Sorry for the rant, I just have a lot of feelings I wanted to share because of the movie and I know you've talked about all this before—it's just something hard to discuss on the internet without people coming down your throat 🥲. Anyhow, justice for Briseis, is my rallying cry, I love her so much, queen made a whole war stop for her and managed to escape from Agamemnon unscathed. Queen who launched a thousand ships to my heart 🫶🏻.

I'm glad you re-watched it! It's a beloved of many Greeks since the movie is quite epic and makes you understand some of the original's glory. Hector, Andromache and Briseis are some of my fave characters in the movie, and it made me also look out for those characters when they appear in the text.

Btw, I would love to know a Palestinian's pov on our shared traditions and myths, how do you guys learn the Greek myths, what parts of them have had perhaps an affect on your heritage and since when, etc! 😍

Briseis' situation is complicated one because many people won't catch the nuance of her living in a patriarchal society as a war captive and thus developing a strange co-dependence to her captors. In addition, the Homeric Epics are a work changed by time in the Greek society, as people added and altered stuff, so many storylines have been affected by other layers of patriarchal societies. So of course the notion of "slave girl mourning her captor's friend" would seem natural, because they probably don't consider a slave woman's POV. Or perhaps she was in the mourning because she had to be there as a woman "belonging" to the Greeks, and the text does not mention it explicitly because it a given for the era. (I don't recall the whole relevant text sorry)

I am not sure if the average author - judging by what is published in the Anglophone market - can handle the complexity of Briseis and other women in the Trojan war. For Briseis one could go for a romance there but they'd have to depict all of her psychosynthesis properly, so it doesn't come off as "Achilles killed my family but he is hot so I love him". To be fair, it is a challenging task but I am still sad that I haven't heard retellings that do this well. Such a retelling done well would be chef's kiss!

As you said, unfortunately, the writers for now focus on the couple Achilles x Patroclus which, ok, let's accept it since it's a ship and there is some background to it (although those guys are most likely 1) cousins 2) very close to each other like brethren in a way westerners misinterpret). I've enjoyed Song of Achilles and I am surely not against such works, but you are right that the female heroines are reduced to flat characters. A fandom full of women manages to be misogynistic - again. We shouldn't be surprised because misogynistic influences are very strong in our societies still, although many don't see it 😕

Fixed the tags, thank you! Actually IIRC you can't use a Story Bedivere during the Lartoria boss fight but to be fair they also didn't even have a Threat to Humanity trait back then (introduced AFAIK in Camelot with Gorgon).

And the chivalrous trait is still in progress at time of posting but so far without any narrowing down it looks like the following (also any question marks indicate exactly what you'd assume, so treat this less as a proper list and more like a list of "candidates"):

While on the field: - Increase buff success rate for all [KOTRT] allies by 20%. - Increase HP Recovery for all other [KOTRT] allies by 20%.

As Camelot's official team mom steward and personal caretaker to the King themselves, Bedi's definitely gonna need a few automatic benefits if they want to wrangle a group as dysfunctional as that lot. To that end we're giving a buff to all KOTRT healing while Bedi's on the field. They're not going to be gaining any direct healing effects, but this will increase anyone else's healing, be it a fellow knight or a third party providing the heals - from Barghest's buff devouring to Merlin's regen to any non-knight providing support. Though, running around caring for a group like that doesn't leave Bedi with much time to look after himself, so while there's no demerits involved, don't expect the steward himself to benefit from the extra healing. As for the Buff Success Rate, while none of the KOTRT normally have chance based skills, this will act a niche shielding against anyone who would LOWER their otherwise normal success rates, be it something like a unique/situational boss debuff or, more realistically, a certain Moth's pettiness. (Plus who knows, maybe i have some WIP ideas about conscripting temporary KOTRT members who would find buff success rate much more directly useful)

Knight's Tactics B -> Knight’s Tutelage B

Increase NP Strength for all allies (3 turns). Increase NP Gain for all allies (3 turns). Increase DEF for all [Chivalrous] allies (3 turns). [10-20%] Increase ATK for all other [KOTRT] allies (3 turns). [5-15%]

A model knight in most every regard, Bedivere not only supports his allies, but inspired his fellow knights. Chivalrous allies take their duty to protect more seriously, and his fellow Round Table members in particular especially benefit from this coordination. for other knights, works even more efficiently with the KOTRT who cover one another's strengths and weaknesses (even if as their support he's not exactly leading the charge). Simple as that!

Calm and Collected B -> B+

Increase own NP Gauge by 30%. Increase own Mental Debuff Resist (3 turns).^ Apply Buff to self: Increase NP Gauge for all [KOTRT] allies every turn (3 turns). [2-8%] Applies "gain 4 Crit Stars per turn" to all [Chivalrous] allies (3 turns).

If it wasn't obvious yet, there's something of a theme here in wrangling other knights into doing their job properly. Well, case in point, Calm and Collected is Bedivere doing exactly that as he calms himself and collects his allies, providing moral support to fellow chivalrous types, and going even further to accommodate his comrades from Camelot. This not only only keeps the instincts of his allies well honed, but brings out the Knights of the Round's greatest strength and source of their legend: Unity. Not only does Bedivere embolden the feats of all KOTRT, but the more knightly allies at his side, the more honed their attacks. IE more crit stars. (...That said, unity implies looking out for Bedi as much as his allies, so don't go thinking you can or should just send Bedi out to pop the skill and die, because that NP Regen is going with him if you do.)

Oath of Protection B -> B+++

Increase DEF by 30% for all allies (1 turn). Increase Debuff Resist for all allies (1 turn). Apply Target Focus to self if there is an [Arthur] ally (3 times, 3 turns). Apply Delayed On-Death Buff (1 turn). - Restore HP for all other allies. [1000-4000] - Increase NP Overcharge Level for all [KOTRT] allies (1 time). [1 stage at level 1-3, 2 stages at level 4-5, 3 stages at level 6-8, 4 stages at level 9+]

Enough about what kind of person Bedi is in general though, lets get into the things truly specific to him...even if that means acknowledging his failings as well. Arthur's steward, he's the first to defend his King, but....well, it's fleeting to say the least as something of a legacy to the incident at the lake. Rather than 3 turns of Target focus, Bedivere gains 3 Single Target charges of Target Focus. To remind you, Target Focus Charges are used up when any single target attack or debuff is used. Thankfully, Bedivere's new max of 50% defense up between his S1 and S3 means he can tank very well when optimized, and his debuff res is pretty damn well off too. However, should both those things fail him and he ends up falling the very same turn, it'll clear a path for his allies much like a certain Gudaguda flower of war. At it's absolute max potential, this sacrifice will bring the wrath of the entire round table down on the fool who struck him down.

EX Rankup:

Switch On - Airgetlám C+ -> EX-

Ignore an enemy's Anti-Enforcement Defense buffs (1 turn). [Activates first] Deal damage to a single enemy. Deal 150% extra Special Attack damage to enemies who are both [Knight or Cavalry class] and [Threat to Humanity]. Removes a single enemy's Invincibility buffs. Reduce your Max HP by 2000 (5 turns). [Demerit] <Overcharge> Increase your Buster effectiveness (1 turn). [Activates first]

This one's pretty self explanatory, and probably completely unnecessary for the most part given Bedi's already seen as having a really good budget ST NP, but there's just too much potential given the whole role he played in Camelot for me to not give it SOMETHING. I was really on the fence about making "Anti Purge Defense a thing" thing since Purge Defense is, itself, a bad solution to how ubiquitous Anti Invincibility has become, but i figured if there was EVER going to be someone who deserved it it'd be the slayer of Rhongomyniad. Plus, unlike Ignore Invincibility, anti purge defense would have no overlap with Invincible let alone evade. The invincibility removal grants a degree of utility but is mostly flavor since...well, unlike the Anti Enforcement ignore, it activates after, meaning if you didnt already have Ignore Invincible you'll be doing no damage with the NP. On top of all that, it's especially effective on story bosses, since that's pretty much the only time we see non-extra class enemies with the Threat to Humanity trait. No prizes though for guessing which particular threat to humanity goddess from the main story this is meant for. Of course, the massive burst in power comes with a similar story based penalty, with each use of Airgetlám draining Bedivere life force.

....So yeah! I dont know why this one took me so long to write up when in hindsight it's pretty damn straightforward where most if not all the effects are coming from. I admit though that's the last time I leave which one is next up to a vote because now I not only need to post Phantom and Sanson's rework, but after Summer 6 i'm dying to post Blackbeard's sweep of rank ups too-

Mash and Kiyohime frequently visited your room so you weren't so lonely, but still being bedridden for five days wasn't fun. After successfully repairing the 5th singularity, Romani immediately put you on bed rest. The Lancer was once your enemy in the third singularity, but somehow get himself summoned on Chaldea before your departure to North America. Unlike Kiyohime, your relationship with him was strained in the beginning, he may your Servant but you didn't have his loyalty. Nevertheless, you acknowledged and put your trust in him, and in the end, he finally saw you as a worthy Master to serve.

"Sure, just come in. I'm not locking the door." As you gave your approval, Hektor entered your room for the first time. Once again to your surprise, he brought a bag of various snacks for you.

"I thought these snacks can ease your boredom." He said with his usual grin, but somehow for you, that grin felt more genuine than before and there was no ill or sinister thought toward you. You couldn't help but smiled at those warm gestures as you accepted the snacks.

"Oh my, I never thought that I'll need them." You stared at the snacks in awe, you were almost drooling at the sight of the sweets you received. There are a lot of candies, chocolate bars, and even Japanese snacks. You were wondering where did he get all of them?

"But don't forget to brush your teeth after eating them, yeah? If you get toothache, This old man will be scolded by Doctor for giving you too much snacks."

"Yeah, I know. I don't need more nagging from Doctor."

"So... how are you?" From that on you and Hektor had a chat and turn out it was quite pleasant. You didn't have any chance to have a casual conversation with him before, previously both of you were only talking when discussing strategy or you giving out orders to him on the battlefield. Then, you realized there is something you want to say to him.

"Hey, Hektor? Can I say something to you?"

"Sure? You're my Master, you don't need to ask permission."

"I just want to say... thank you."

"Thank you? For what?"

"Well, a few days ago Da Vinci was visiting me and showing me the record from our last journey. She told me about how you fought Fergus by yourself." Even now you were still impressed and shivering every time you remember the record that Da Vinci gave to you.

"Thank you for carrying my order back then. You did protect everyone just like I ask you and I'm glad you're okay. Good work, Hektor." Your burden on your heart was lifted after you said your thanks. You couldn't reward him with anything but your gratitude.

Hektor's heart flutter when you said those simple yet heartfelt words. He was wondering why you were so kind and forgiving to him after everything he did to you in Okeanos. He tried to separate you from Mash and Kiyohime, he was pointing his lance at you, and most unforgiving was he did punch you right in your face when you tried to stop him from taking Euryale away.

"What are you talking about? This old man is your Servant, it's natural that I obey your command." Hektor gently took your right hand where the command spells were engraved and kissed it gently, "I couldn't erase my sins from that sea, to atone that I shall dedicate my lance just for you. From now on you're my Troy, Master."

You can feel a hot sensation rushing to your face and your heart beating faster. Did he just say you are his Troy? Was that means you are important to him? Mash told you before that Troy is Hektor's beloved home country, she also told you how Hektor tried to protect it with all his might for years until his tragic death at the hand of Achilles.

"Tha-Thanks.." That was the only word you can mutter. Hektor merely chuckled when he saw your modest reaction, it's very endearing to him. As you heard his soft laugh, you could feel a warm feeling growing inside your heart. You didn't really know what those feeling were, but as far as you knew, you felt happy.

Your journey to restore humanity would be more difficult. You would see more tragedies, bloodshed, and tears on your path. But, as long this person stays at your side, you were sure you can face them no matter what.

I'm writing a little Hektor/Andromache fic set immediately after they get married and. It's just Hektor who's always kinda close to crying doing anything he can think of to make Andromache more comfortable and hopefully keep her from being so nervous around him vs Andromache who's (understandably) paranoid about hurt and abuse given her lack of control with an arranged marriage and reads into Hektor's nice gestures way to much, worried he's trying to take advantage of her or indebt her.

They're both doing their best and eventually start to figure things out and fall in love, but they are on WILDLY different frequencies at first, wow lmao. Like they both feel like they're invested in a crucial match, but they're actually not even playing the same game. Andromache feels like she can outwit him anticipating 20 moves ahead in the world's most intense chess game while Hektor feels like they're playing go fish and he's trying to let her win but he keeps accidentally asking for the cards she has

Sometimes, things are better left unsaid. Especially in a marriage.

Had Paris learned that lesson, his words wouldn’t have filled her veins with fiery rage as they did; Helen would have stayed quiet at her loom instead of ripping apart the intricate work that she’d been weaving upon fabric, turning to look at him with a deathlike stare, her temple reddish with rage. The one thing that prevented her from directly attacking him was their shared grief. Still, his comments did nothing but to rub salt on the wound, like the hand of an enemy that twists the knife into one’s entrails, wanting to extract as much pain as they could in one strike.

“How dare you say this to me?”

She moved slowly, never averting her furious eyes from his figure, her chest heaving with heavy breaths. Her voice bore a seething tone, her upper lip tensely forming a snarl whilst her hands curled into fists, repressing more rage than they could.

Hektor was dead, for the sake of them both. Dead, because the Fates wove wicked threads for them. But to hear Paris still insisting on missing the point of his brother’s sacrifice even now, claiming that it was all for nothing… It was unforgivable. 

Stepping towards him, Helen grabbed a vase on her way, angrily tossing it over the marble floor  with all her strength, shattering it to pieces.

“Hektor died”, she said, her lips twisting into a wicked, menacing smile, “so you could live. He died, so his family could be free. He died”, her voice grew louder, more belligerent, until it turned to shouting, “because he had honor. Something that you will NEVER understand!”

Romeo, beckoning with his hand for Hektor to come closer: "Hektor, Hektor! Come sit on my lap! I saw a couple on TV do it and it looks so cute! I could wrap my arms around you and hug you!"

Hektor, thinking: *he thinks about how there is a huge height and weight difference between the two. Hektor is tall and muscular (his drawn chibi is thicker in size) while Romeo is described "literally a stick" (Romeo's drawn chibi is thinner). It is shown that Hektor is 6'3 and Romeo is 5'6*

Hektor, sweat dropping: "Romeo, no offense, but I'm afraid I might accidentally break your legs with my weight. You're not exactly... well suited for much weight... if any"

Romeo, staring: "..."

Romeo, cheerfully with a smile: "What an honorable way to d-"

Hektor, cutting Romeo off: "Romeo, NO"

Note/artist's commentary: Romeo is well-known for getting injured from the smallest things, so Hektor's concern is very valid. Hektor might be a little too muscular 😔
