Is dazai (and version of him, really, but specifically beastzai) really that strong physically? Because while he’s tall and has broad shoulders, he doesn’t seem very buff, and I don’t feel like he’d hold that much physical power over you, like Nikolai, for example.
He's not buff, but you underestimate the power size and limb length can have. For example, me! I work out, I can comfortably pick up one of my friends because he's on the skinny side. However, he's significantly taller than me and his limbs are longer, plus he weighs more. In an all out fight, he would win without question.
While Dazai may not be strong enough to pick you up like Nikolai can, he is definitely strong enough to hold you down and immobilise your arms or legs. Trying to throw him off when he's taller and has more leg than you would be extremely difficult unless you're trained in some type of martial arts. He can land a hit on you while maintaining enough distance that you can't do the same to him, simply because he doesn't have to get as close as you.

Summary: Ochako goes wandering in the palace gardens, looking for an escape from her reality as a caged bird.
Hello everyone! Here is my story for the Shinchako Sleepover server’s exchange! Enjoy :)
The full moon loomed large in the night sky, as if it had traversed the far reaches of the heavens in order to grow close enough to peer down at the earth. Ochako couldn’t blame it; the world truly had some wondrous places. However, it would be hard-pressed to find places that were more beautiful than the sprawling palace gardens of Uraraka Castle. The massive estate spanned hundreds of acres, featuring a dizzying array of dense hedge mazes, trimmed topiary sculptures, ornate marble fountains, and hundreds of plant species imported from every place imaginable. Since she was a mere toddling babe, Ochako had found solace in the sprawling mass of foliage surrounding her lofty palace home—especially in the deep of night when the moon bathed it all in its silver glow. 
Deep in the eastern section of the garden, she stood before a small grove of plum trees. It was on the cusp of spring, and so the trees had burst into bloom to eagerly welcome its coming. The white fringes of the blossoms seemed to shine even brighter in the pale light like the rosy petals were dipped in the moonlight itself. Ochako reached up to gently touch the underside of one, appreciating the silk-like feeling against the pads of her fingers. It was strange how the forbidden things seemed the most beautiful of all. 
Forbidden to Ochako, at least. Though the Uraraka family had spared no expense in designing their extraordinary garden, all but the innermost circle were open to the public. Thus, it was extremely unwise for a princess such as herself to wander the gardens unsupervised, especially in the deep of night when any number of unsavory characters could be skulking about the shadows. But the gardens called to Ochako, even more so when the sun sank below the horizon and the moon ventured forth to admire the gardens with her silver eyes. For it was only wandering through the endless expanse of lush greenery that Ochako felt the weight of the world fall off her shoulders. 
As the only child of the Uraraka family, Ochako stood to inherit her parents’ kingdom. It was not large nor powerful, but it was an established country in its own right. Thus, Ochako had an immense amount of responsibility even at the tender age of seventeen—on top of all the normal duties that a princess was expected to undertake. From dawn to dusk, Ochako’s day consisted of a cram-packed schedule of lessons, meetings, tea parties, dress fittings, soireés, budget plannings, grievance hearings, and more. By the time she dragged herself into her tower bedroom, she was ready to collapse face-first into bed; however, as soon as the moon would shine upon the trawls of ivy clinging to the stone bricks of her windowsill, she would become instantly rejuvenated. 
Just one stroll, she would convince her aching feet while opening her window. She had long since memorized the bulges and divots of the worn tower wall. It was nothing now for her to shimmy down like a trained cat burglar, and, as if in camaraderie, the moon would always turn away so that Ochako was instead enveloped by the shadows. And as soon as her bare feet met the cool grass at the base of her tower, the rest of her body followed suit with her heart. Her nerves would go abuzz and her muscles would itch with the desire to run deep into the green leaves and colorful blooms. And so she would, for why deny herself the pleasure everyone else was free to experience?
Ochako was close to the outskirts of the gardens now. The massive height of the palace walls eclipsed all but the highest of the glittering stars. Even the moon could not breach its zenith, just barely peeking over the top of the square stone blocks. It was a poignant reminder that no matter how far Ochako sought to wander, she could never truly escape. Though her cage was wide, it still had bars in the end; she was but a bird who could only get the first taste of flight before she was cruelly reminded that the sky was beyond her reach. 
That wasn’t to say she was resentful. Despite the hither-tither and mountainous responsibility, Ochako loved her parents, and she loved her kingdom. She was actually quite eager to ascend the throne someday. However… She just wished that she could actually see her kingdom—not just the blurry smudge of buildings on the horizon or stolen glimpses through the curtains of a carriage. But that was one of the few luxuries Ochako was denied, at least until she became a queen proper. She could only come here, to the border between, and wonder if the world beyond the stone had a beauty comparable to the one she called home. 
“Soon,” she murmured to herself. “Until then, I must do my best in my studies.” And her tutors always said that one learned best when they had something to enjoy. Of course, none of them knew that Ochako’s hobby was stealing into the gardens late at night; they just thought she sewed or embroidered like any good and proper princess. Ochako much preferred the prick of a rose thorn to a cold silver needle, thank you very much. At least that came with the sweet aroma of a rose as a reward. Speaking of… If Ochako remembered correctly, there were rose bushes nearby this section of the wall. 
I’ll see the roses, and then I’ll head back to the castle. I should be getting to bed, she decided. Despite wandering this far, she was not yet sated. Doubt still clouded the back of her mind and hung heavy on her shoulders. Just a little bit longer, she told herself, and maybe she could return to the castle without her worries… at least until they returned with the rising sun. 
Ochako held up her skirts so she could scamper around a trimmed hedge to where she knew the rosebushes were. Her face illuminated with delight when they came into view, the rich red of the petals shining like velvet in the moonlight. She dropped her skirts as she approached in favor of cupping her fingers underneath two of the flowers, the petals soft as silk against the pads of her fingertips. But she could not completely abandon herself to the joy of admiring the roses; the tips of the thorns just barely pressed into her skin, a silent threat to keep her from reaching even a millimeter more. And Ochako respected the warning, keeping her touch to the lightest of caresses as she marveled at the ruby-hued blooms. 
Though Ochako would like to stay there all night, she knew that was not prudent. It would take another half an hour to trek back to the castle, and she didn’t want to betray her nightly adventures to her tutors on account of lack of sleep. So, she spent just a few moments more adoring the roses before pulling herself away. 
But before Ochako could take even a single step, she realized something strange. The gardens had gone… quiet. Too quiet. The gardens were as full of life at night as during the day; though the songbirds tucked their heads under their feathers with the falling of the sun, their melodies were soon replaced by those of the crickets and the frogs and the occasional nightbird. But there was no symphony in the garden now, just an eerie silence. There was only one reason why they would cease their tribute to the moon and stars. 
There was someone else here, someone they perceived as a threat. 
A shiver rocketed up and down Ochako’s spine as a twig snapped. It pierced the silent air like the crack of a whip, and it was even more jarring because it was close. When the hair began to rise on the back of Ochako’s neck, she knew—she was caught within the gaze of whatever predator was skulking in the shadows, be it man or beast. A cold sweat bloomed on her skin, the blood drained from her face, and a strong shiver gripped her body. Another twig snapped to her left, and she peered anxiously out of her peripheral vision just in time to see the hedge she had passed earlier shake violently. 
Though her heart thundered against her ribcage and her mind screamed at her to move, Ochako remained frozen in that spot. It was like the gardens had trapped her, wrapped her feet up in tight tendrils of roots to keep her from moving an inch. Had she misjudged them? Had they enticed her out with sweet promises and whispers of peace, only to reveal themselves at the last moment as a living beast desperate for her blood? The hedge rustled vigorously again, and then—
a dagger came flying out from behind Ochako. It embedded itself in the soft, loamy earth right as the weasel squeezed its slender body through a gap in the tightly twisted branches of the bush. When the silver blade punched into the dirt mere inches before its face, the weasel released a shrill squeal and puffed out every bit of its fur in fright. Then, it whipped around to wriggle back into the bush from whence it came, chittering angrily all the while. 
Ochako’s blink was slow, for her mind was struggling to process what had just happened. Everything lagged behind, including her instincts—so she didn’t even flinch when someone brushed past her to trudge over to the knife. The newcomer leaned down to pluck the dagger from the earth. As he rose, Ochako’s mind finally caught up with all the information it was being bombarded with—and she breathed a sigh of relief. 
“Hitoshi!” 
“Good evening, princess,” he purred as he turned to smirk at her. Once gloved hand dove into his messy lavender locks to push his bangs out of his eyes, while the other slipped the dagger into the holster strapped to his thigh over his trousers. The hilt clinked as it hit that of the gilded sword sheathed beside it, one of silver embedded with pink opals. His doublet was pink, too, and embroidered in white thread was the sigil of Ochako’s house. It was a symbol Hitoshi Shinso had to wear at all times, for he was Ochako’s one and only knight. 
“It’s dangerous to be in the gardens alone, Princess,” Hitoshi scolded playfully, crossing his arms as he walked up to her. Ochako’s cheeks began to burn, both from the embarrassment of being caught and the mortification that she had been so frightened of a mere weasel. She averted her gaze, and Hitoshi tutted at the way her lips poked out into a pout. “What would you have done if I wasn’t here, hmm? That weasel could have bitten your face off, you know,” he joked with a smug little waggle of his head. 
“Hitoshi, don’t tease,” she whined and face-palmed herself. How embarrassing, getting so worked up over a wild rodent! Ochako had been wandering these gardens since she could walk; she should have known that it was just a small nocturnal predator slinking about in search of food. She heaved another sigh, one of frustration this time, before dropping her hand to look dourly up at him. “What are you doing out here?” 
“Looking for you, of course.” He answered it like she should have known. In reality, she should have. Ochako and Hitoshi had known one another for their entire lives, for he had been placed in her service as soon as he was old enough to hold a wooden sword. Hitoshi knew everything about Ochako, including her habit of wandering the gardens. And Ochako knew everything about Hitoshi, including the fact that he always checked her quarters before retiring for the evening himself. She almost face-palmed herself again at the realization of her stupid mistake. How could she have not thought to leave after he’d come by to check on her?
It seemed this question was also at the forefront of his mind. The playful smirk dropped from his face, replaced by a serious and concerned frown. “Princess, you hardly ever wander out this far. What is on your mind?” 
Ochako could only smile wanly. Hitoshi had never been one to beat around the bush—and thanks to their history, he had the uncanny ability to perceive Ochako’s uncertainties, sometimes even before she became aware of them herself. She exhaled deeply, then turned to walk over to one of the stone benches nearby. Hitoshi waited until she had seated herself and beckoned him over before joining her. They were best friends, but he still insisted on maintaining that line that must exist between knight and princess; so he waited for her order before moving, and he seated himself with plenty of space between them. 
Ochako felt her heart clench, contorting with a pain like rose thorns piercing deep into the flesh. The world beyond the gardens wasn’t the only thing that was forbidden to Ochako. 
“Princess…” Hitoshi murmured encouragingly. But Ochako did not find herself comfited—just slightly annoyed. 
“How many times must I ask you to call me ‘Ochako’?” she grumbled. Look, she got it—Hitoshi had to maintain appearances. But surely when they were alone, they could forget the bond of princess and knight, and instead focus on the bond of friendship? That was the only one Ochako cared about, at least. 
Hitoshi hummed at her insolent question, head tipping to the side as he acknowledged her with glittering eyes. She puffed out her cheeks indignantly when she glared at him, and he only chuckled. 
“Come on, there’s no one around. Just say it once! ‘Ochako’!” she urged. Hitoshi just chortled throughout her little fit, which only served to stoke her ire. However, just as she opened her mouth to protest again, he grabbed her hand and brought it to his mouth to lightly kiss the top of it. 
“If my princess wills it, so it shall be,” he murmured against her lips, his amethyst eyes boring into hers all the while. “Ochako.” 
Ochako’s heart fluttered in her chest, both at the sudden forwardness he was exhibiting and how utterly divine her name sounded on his tongue. Hitoshi had always possessed this languid, smooth way of speaking, as if his words dripped with honey; it was no secret that it drove the castle’s servant girls wild. As her name rolled off his tongue, coated in that sticky sweetness of his molasses-like voice, Ochako suddenly could appreciate what they all twittered about. 
“Now,” he hummed, looking quite satisfied with himself as he lowered her hand back to the bench. He let it go, but placed it just a short space away, still close enough for the tips of their pinky fingers to touch. “You have yet to answer my question. What is bothering you, my lady?” 
Though she had always found the pale purple of his eyes captivating, now, Ochako could not stand to meet them. She averted her gaze to her lap, and then began to worry her bottom lip between her teeth. Truly, there was so much that Ochako was denied. One thing… She just wanted one thing to be hers unfettered…
“Apparently,” she started in a quiet voice, “my parents have been talking about marriage candidates.” She’d overheard her tutors this morning while she was pretending to study in the library. Marriage had always seemed such a far-off thing, too busy was she preparing to inherit her parents’ throne. But she’d neglected to consider that marrying was quite a part of that. And now that Ochako was on the cusp of turning suitable age, it seemed that issue had come to the forefront of her parents’ minds. 
And it terrified her. Terrified her enough to flee to the far reaches of the gardens. But all she’d managed is reminding herself of the fact that she was caged, and that cage was about to grow smaller still. 
“Hitoshi, I—I don’t want to get married,” she whispered hoarsely. “Not to a stranger.” When she looked at him with wide, watery eyes, Hitoshi was just gazing piteously at her. She could tell that her agony hurt him too; his brows were pinched, his lips pulled down into a frown, and his eyes swam with pain. He reached up to tenderly cup her cheek, and though Ochako leaned into the touch, she could not help but lament the fact that her skin was brushing against the cloth of his glove and not his calloused palm. She squeezed her eyes shut tight, forcing the tears to leak out and onto the palm of his glove. “What do I do?”
“Ochako…” Hitoshi sighed. Despite the apprehension and misery tearing it apart, her battered heart still managed to flutter at the fact that he had used her name again. She felt him shift on the bench, and when she opened her eyes, she was surprised to find that he had closed the distance between them. Now there was nothing there—his thigh pressed against hers, his heart thumped inches from her own, and his face was so close. His eyes slowly wandered around her face, drinking in her lachrymose expression with a strangely blank look. He used his thumb to gently sweep the tears away, and then, he began to smile. 
“You didn’t hear the full conversation, did you?” he chuckled. Ochako blinked, her tears stopping short as confusion began to replace the sorrow. What on Earth was he on about? With an amused smirk, he tilted his head so that the tip of his nose just barely brushed against the bridge of hers. Electricity spiderwebbed from the point of contact, spreading through her body until it felt like she was simultaneously numb all over yet tingling with anticipation. “They aren’t talking about marriage candidates. There’s just one.” 
Ochako didn’t freak out. First of all, Hitoshi didn’t seem bothered about that fact, so there must be a reason. But for the life of her, she couldn’t figure out what it was. On top of that, her poor brain was too overwhelmed with the closeness. It was nothing like any closeness they’d ever shared before. They’d been close in every platonic away imaginable—but this? This carried such a sense of romanticism that it had Ochako’s head spinning. 
So, she just stared up at him with an utterly bewildered expression. 
“Still don’t get it?” Hitoshi laughed. It was a laugh he only showed her—completely inhibited, eyes scrunching up and shoulders shaking as he tossed back his head. When he looked back at her, his cheeks were rosy with mirth, and his eyes gleamed with this certain something that made her heart flutter again. With a soft, content hum, he used his other hand to gently tuck a swathe of her hair behind her ear—and then he leaned forward so he could huskily whisper into it, “Ochako… They want you to marry me.” 
She couldn’t help the strangled sound that tore from her throat when her mouth dropped open. Of all the things that Hitoshi could have said, she’d never expected that. Of course, the surprise was rapidly overtaken by something else—joy.
“Truly?!” she explained as he retreated from her ear, and Hitoshi nodded. She clasped her hands together as tears sprung to her eyes anew, but they were not of sadness. 
Hitoshi’s suave smirk morphed into a bashful grin. His face was gradually turning the shade of the roses, but he tried not to seem as demure as he was as he asked, “So… This pleases you?” 
“Hitoshi, of course.” Even with as much emphasis as she put on the statement, it still wasn’t enough to convey just how much it did. She reached up to clasp his free hand in her own and squeeze it tight. “Hitoshi, I love you. How could I not, after how long we’ve been together, how much we have been through together?” Hitoshi would have stolen the moon and stars to lay at her feet if she but asked. So, the expression she gave him then was utterly lovestruck, smile serene and eyes lidded as love burst within their depths. 
“I wouldn’t want to marry anyone else in the entire world, even if they were a king among kings.”
“Well, that’s reassuring to hear,” Hitoshi said. He’d begun to regain his confidence thanks to Ochako’s answer, bringing that suave purr back to his voice. When he leaned his face back in to gently run the tip of his nose up the curve of her jawline, Ochako didn’t retreat; she leaned her head back to ease his path, eyes fluttering shut at the sensation. He stopped at the junction of her ear and her jawline, placed a light kiss there, and then turned his face to murmur in her ear again. 
“So if we are already breaking social graces tonight… May I do something a bit bold?” 
Goosebumps sprouted all over Ochako’s body at the seductive rumble of his tone. She wasn’t even consciously aware of nodding in consent, but she must have, because next thing she knew, Hitoshi’s face had moved to gaze into her eyes. The fire burning within them, making his irises gleam like real amethysts, stopped her breath short in her lungs. It was just as well, because her breath would have been stolen anyway as soon as Hitoshi’s lips met hers. 
It was soft and sweet, everything Ochako dreamed of as her first kiss. Just a lingering brush of his mouth over hers, and then he was pulling back to tenderly cup her face with both his hands. He smiled giddily, and then he leaned in again, pecking her lips once, twice, three times. Ochako began to giggle when he began to pepper little kisses all over her face, simply drowning in his own excitement. But she let him, because each little peck of his lips against her skin made her body flush with warmth. 
And as the moonlight turned her gaze from the flowers to the far more beautiful sight of the two young lovers basking in their joy, Ochako closed her eyes to the feeling of its silvery glow washing over her. For as many times as she had wandered the gardens searching for peace, it at last felt like she had truly found it.

     ‘ Intuition ‘. What a fucking complicated word. He thought he knew what it meant though. Wasn’t it like... The ability to easily understand things? In which case - NO, he absolutely didn’t have any sense of intuition. He had always been stupid, and that included an inability to understand people. Even those who he knew really well, like Grimmjow - he had a hard time understanding. It often seemed like his boyfriend could read his mind, but Nnoitra couldn’t perform any such trick in return. It was a cause of frustration for him, especially since when he TRIED to understand him, he almost always ended up assuming the wrong thing. Pretty much EVERY misunderstanding that had occurred between them had been Nnoitra’s fault. It wasn’t something he could help though. He had always been like this. Always assuming the worst about every single situation.
     ❝ My intuition is real bad. If I think I’m seein’ somethin’ without nobody explainin shit ‘ta me, I’m pretty sure it’s just my paranoia. ❞ There was a slight hint of humor to his voice. It lead him into a lot of shitty situations, but he head learned to live with it. It was just a part of his personality at this point. In any case, no matter HOW BAD he was at reading other people, he was still able to communicate with Grimmjow, and in the end that was the most important thing to him.
     The next question had him grimace a bit, as if he was making an errr sound. He WISHED he could boast about being real ambitious. WANTING stuff out of life. Like he had a career path to follow or something grand he wanted to achieve. There wasn’t. He hadn’t had any big goals since he was a kid, and back then it had just been one of those stupid childhood dreams. Like how everyone wanted to grow up to be a firefighter or a police officer or whatever. Nnoitra had wanted to become an astronaut. Because he wanted to leave earth. He couldn’t think of anything COOLER than going to the moon. It hadn’t taken many years for him to understand that something like that was completely unrealistic, and he had stopped dreaming. For the most part, Nnoitra’s life had been about survival. Not from something physical like starvation, but from his own desire to die. It hadn’t manifested itself in real suicide attempts. It had been an inability to see the future. Not WANTING there to be a future. Crossing the road without looking. Yeah, some days it was still like that.
     ❝ Dunno. ❞ He finally said, not wanting to say straight out that he wasn’t ambitious. It sounded kinda pathetic, he thought. ❝ I just live my life ‘n see what happens. I wanna be strong, ‘daz ‘bout it. ❞ Yeah, that was the ONE thing he always strived for. He wanted to be strong. To BE strong and appear strong. Nnoitra couldn’t imagine living a life where he was physically frail. He could hardly even deal with falling ill, because he’d feel so disgusted by his own weak body. He didn’t think he’d want to continue living if he ever got to the point where he was fragile. He didn’t think he’d make it that far anyway. He wasn’t going to die of old age. There was no way. 
     Other than wanting to be strong, Nnoitra was pretty modest in his wishes. He wanted to go camping with Grimmjow this summer. He wanted to lay in the grass in the sun. He wanted to eat good food ( preferably something sweet ), and have sex every night. He wanted a NORMAL life ( at least as normal as someone as him could hope to live ) that he could live without too many worries. And, most importantly - he wanted to be together with Grimmjow. If he couldn’t be with him, then NOTHING would matter anyway.

     ❝ Yeah, I’m athletic. Can’t ya tell? ❞ He didn’t like having anyone ( including himself ) point out his physique, but right now it seemed a better option to do it himself, since it was the subject for the next question. Nnoitra had always been skinny. When he was a kid, he was of average height, but still skinny. When he entered puberty, he SUDDENLY grew to be really - really tall. A little over seven feet. He was still very thin. He was still all muscles though. Long and lean, his muscles packed more strength than one would expect. Because of the length of his arm for example, he could easily arm-wrestle with guys who packed muscles. Working out didn’t do anything for Nnoitra, because he didn’t have any fat he could convert to muscles, he couldn’t build muscle mass. This really bothered him, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it. No matter how much he ate, he couldn’t gain weight.
     When he went to high school, before he lost his eye, he had played basketball. He had actually been the captain of the basketball team, and they had done really well. He had been GOOD, but he suspected that was more or less ALL due to his height. He imagined he still would’ve played to this day, if it hadn’t been for him losing his eye. He doubted he ever could’ve gone professional though. He wasn’t bulky enough for that. He had a lot of insecurities about his body, and he just lived with that. He disliked being shirtless, and tied to avoid it as much as possible ( he even slept in a t-shirt, and whenever him and Grimmjow fucked, he’d keep it on ). He liked wearing baggy clothes because they made his frame not look so thin. Guys weren’t supposed to be this skinny. They were supposed to be muscular, like Grimmjow.
     Despite everything, Nnoitra was still fairly atheltic. Not in his physique, but in SKILL. He made his living from fighting after all. He was fast and strong and agile. His height of course was a major advantage as well. Considering he couldn’t get thick and muscular, he had to have more natural talent than others to be able to keep to the level he was currently at. There really was NOBODY who was better at him when it came to fighting. Nnoitra was proud of that.
     Now, with the last question, it was back to talking about COMMUNICATION. Even if he was really bad at it, Nnoitra knew that communication was important in a relationship. Maybe not AS MUCH when it came to friendships, but romantic relationships? Yeah, then it really mattered. Thankfully, Grimmjow was good at understanding him, and a lot of the times when something was bothering him, Grimmjow would either guess what it was, or manage to coax it out of him. Nnoitra thought it took a special sort of person to be ABLE to deal with him. Grimmjow was that kind of person. ❝ Mah, ya know, if people don’t understand ya, then ‘daz their problem. ❞ No, not really. Most of the time it became his goddamn problem. ❝ It’s better ‘ta just hang out with those who understand ya without ya havin’ ‘ta explain everythin’ all’a ‘da time. ❞ This he did think was true. It was a hassle if he had to constantly explain his feelings or actions. Especially his feelings, since he didn’t like talking about them.

A LingZhen Ranch AU OS
Yes, they still don’t have official titles because that’s how they’re named for now XD So, in this AU, City boy Jin Ling has to go lay low at his uncle Wei Wuxian’s ranch because his other uncle Jin GuangYao messed up and is now in prison, and being the heir of the infamous Jin Corp, the press was being heavy on him. Of course, Jin Ling doesn’t want to go on the countryside, but uncle Jiang Cheng didn’t leave him much of a choice. Farm boy ZiZhen, foster child of Wei Wuxian and Lan WangJi since he was thirteen years old, makes quite the impression on Jin Ling once he gets there. 
In this OS, their relationship is established, Jin Ling went back to the city after things calmed down, and ZiZhen visits him for the first time. Enjoy!
The city’s light tumbled through his half-closed eyelids. He could only watch in amazement wherever they went. The neons, the skyscrapers, despite the night being advanced, everything was so alight and alive. So different from where he came from. 
- Jin Ling! We need… we need to go see that movie! It looks good!
ZiZhen pointed to the giant billboard at the entrance of the nearest subway station. His words were slurred by a whole evening of them jumping from bar to bar, enjoying what he dubbed their “first official date in the big city”. Jin Ling had rolled his eyes, arguing that they’ve already had plenty of dates together, but he had to admit - albeit reluctantly - that his boyfriend’s looked too cute in his excitement to deny. After all, ZiZhen had only seen the city by day so far, so Jin Ling agreed to show him around the district that never sleeps. 
- ZiZhen, love. That’s a perfume ad. 
He looked confused for a few seconds before laughing at himself, and Jin Ling couldn’t help but smile and laugh too. 
By around midnight, they’ve been to four of Jin Ling’s top 10 favourite bars and restaurants, and, seeing ZiZhen’s state already, he realized he might have been a little too ambitious with his plans. Despite his height and muscle mass, his farm boy was a real light weight when it came to drinking. 
- Come on, he said, putting an arm around his waist, I think it’s time to go home. 
ZiZhen agreed, but not before pulling his boyfriend into a kiss that left Jin Ling breathless. When they parted, he put a hand on his chest, voice hoarse. 
- Okay, let me just call an Uber. 
While they waited outside, underneath the awning surrounding one of the many theaters in that area, ZiZhen pulled his boyfriend into a warm embrace, his chin resting on Jin Ling’s head. The latter hugged back and smiled when ZiZhen rubbed his cheek against his hair. Despite the people coming and going on the street, the world was somehow quiet around them. When he saw a couple being photographed by a third party on the sidewalk, a couple of meters from them, ZiZhen remembered the conversation with Jiang Cheng’s a few weeks prior. The shovel talk had gone much better than he expected, but some of what he said that day still puzzled him. “Do you know who he is, to the public?”, he had asked, and ZiZhen had to admit that, besides being the now young CEO of Jin Corp, he still had no idea who his boyfriend was to the rest of the world, especially not to the media. But he knew one thing for sure. 
- If I ever do something that makes you feel ashamed in public, you can break up with me!
Jin Ling pulled away and lifted his head up, absolute confusion written on his face.
- What?
- If you feel ashamed of me, ZiZhen repeated serenely, you can break up with me.
- Yes, that I heard, but where is this coming from? Why do you think I would break up with you? Why would I feel ashamed of you?
Jin Ling was now scowling, his tone irritated… and perhaps afraid? ZiZhen caressed his cheek and kissed the line that formed in between his eyebrows.
- Your uncle… When he gave me the shovel talk, he told me about your public status and -
- What did he tell you?!
Jin Ling’s whole body stiffen and he would have pushed away if ZiZhen didn’t hold him there. His boyfriend kept that same calm expression and smiled at him.
- He just asked if I knew about what the public thinks of you, and I just thought… If your public image is that important, I know I’m just a farm boy, and I don’t know that much about the city, so… if I ever do something that would taint your image in any way, you can leave. I love you, and I just want you to be happy, and - 
He got cut off by Jin Ling’s lips on his, pushing him against the pillar of the awning. 
- Idiot, he said tenderly when he pulled away, that’s not what Jiujiu meant.
Their Uber driver honked at them once, startling them. Before they climbed in, Jin Ling kissed him again.
- I’ll tell you another time. When I’m ready. And both of us are sober.

The car smelled like ice cream. That’s all ZiZhen could think about as they drove in silence through the city, Jin Ling’s hand in his. When they passed in front of the third board advertising yet another brand of ice cream, he turned to his boyfriend, startling him.
- I want gelato. 
Jin Ling raised an eyebrow at him.
- We can have some tomorrow.
- It’s already tomorrow, ZiZhen insisted. I want gelato. 
- The shops are probably all closed by now, Jin Ling scoffed, yet unable to completely hide his smile at his boyfriend’s eagerness.
- I know this place near 3rd avenue, it’s open 24/7, I can take you there if you want, offered the Uber driver. 
- Yes please!
- Wait!
Jin Ling turned to his boyfriend.
- If we wait until tomo - later today, I can bring you to the best gelato parlour in town. 
ZiZhen shook his head, imperturbable.
- I want gelato now. 
Seeing his boyfriend’s unmoved expression, ZiZhen closed the distance between them and softly kissed his cheek. 
- Please?
With a huff, Jin Ling turned to the driver and agreed to his suggestion, much to ZiZhen’s delight. 
The gelato parlour was empty save for two seemingly high customers eating their share at one of the tables, laughing at a joke they made five minutes prior. Behind the counter, the tired but welcoming smile of the employee has long turned into an annoyed pout. ZiZhen has been staring at the flavours for the past fifteen minutes now. Jin Ling was already on his second serving. 
- Come on, ZiZhen, just pick a flavour!
ZiZhen looked up, scandal written on his face. 
- No! This is my first time having gelato, and I want it to be the best experience I can ever… experience. 
Maybe, but you’re clearly not this poor girl’s first customer. Pick a flavour, and have yourself another serving if you want more. 
- It’s not that easy!
Jin Ling slowly exhaled through his nostrils, exchanging a look with the clerk. He apologetically shrugged, mouthing “I’m sorry”, before taking another spoonful of gelato. Another five minutes passed. He ordered another one. 
- Okay. I know what I’ll take, said ZiZhen.
- Fucking finally!
They sat down on the now empty chairs, ZiZhen carefully tasting the four different flavours in his extra large container. Jin Ling finished his and threw it in the trash can. 
- So, how does it taste, Master Chef? 
ZiZhen stared at his cup, spoon hanging between it and his mouth. He pouted.
- Disappointing. 
- I told you we should’ve waited to go to the other place. 
ZiZhen brought the spoon to his mouth and nodded.
- Can we still go tomorrow anyway?
Jin Ling smirked.
- You mean today?
ZiZhen lightly whacked his shoulder with his spoon and pulled his tongue at him, then quickly finished the rest of his gelato. After getting up, he pulled Jin Ling on his feet and held his hand, leaving a taste of coffee and caramel on his lips with a kiss. 
- Let’s go home?
Jin Ling nodded.
- Ya. We can walk from here, it’s not too far. 
They left the parlour, fingers intertwined.

Home was farther than Jin Ling anticipated. They had been walking, hand in hand, for half an hour, and still, no sign of his apartment building. While they started walking at the same pace, now, Jin Ling had slowed a few steps behind, while ZiZhen kept ahead. But there was no way he would tell his farm boy how much his feet hurt. He didn’t spend these months on his uncle’s ranch to complain about aching limbs so soon. Jin Ling didn’t get to finish his mental pep talk when ZiZhen stopped walking.
- Are you alright?
Jin Ling frowned.
- Of course I’m alright, what would make you think I’m not? 
ZiZhen looked at his boyfriend and smiled, understanding. 
- You’ve been digging your nails in my hand for at least five minutes. 
Jin Ling looked at their hands and loosened his grip, noticing the half-moon shape imprinted in ZiZhen’s skin. He kept his eyes on the ground, cheeks reddening. 
- I’m sorry. 
ZiZhen laughed, and pulled him closer. Jin Ling let out a scream of surprise when what he thought would be a hug became ZiZhen’s arms behind his back and knees, lifting him up from the ground. 
- Hey! Put me down! You’re still drunk!
- I’m not, and your feet hurt. 
- So?
ZiZhen laughed again.
- So, isn’t this more comfortable?
Jin Ling would have argued, but his pride left in a huff and he answered by weaving his arms around his neck, head dropping on his shoulder. The surprisingly steady rocking of the walk and the heat of ZiZhen’s body slowly lulled him to sleep.

He was on his bed when he opened his eyes, ZiZhen curled behind him, Fairy at their feet. Jin Ling turned around, careful not to wake him up and softly kissed the tip of his nose.
- Fine, you deserve another round of gelato, he whispered. 
ZiZhen responded with an incomprehensible mumble and pulled him closer. Jin Ling laughed quietly and fell back asleep in the crook of his shoulder.

Pairing: Dean x Reader Warnings: Kinda cracky. You’re a bit of a perv. Stitching up an injury. Word Count: 3000ish. Summary/Prompt: You’re visiting your friend Jody when two flannel-clad brutes come storming in the door, both bleeding and needing help. You help the shorter one with stitches to his thigh. When Jody and Sam walk in to check on you guys, they were not expecting to find you like that! A/N: Guess who’s back, back again. By that I mean guess who’s back with a prompt by my girl @divadinag? That’s right, me! Basically, this is a trash fic with no discernable plot beyond holy shit DEAN HOT.

As much as you hate doing the dishes, and that’s why you own a dishwasher, you’re still doing them. Jody cooked for you, saving you from the pseudo-food in your freezer. Plus your mom taught you that manners matter, especially if you’re the guest. It doesn’t help that Jody excused herself to the living room to take a call from the station.
Honestly, it’s her fault. She straight up left you alone with the dishes.
It’s not that bad anyway. Considering you never do your own it’s almost a novelty. The soap Jody has smells like a poor imitation of roses. It’s pink anyway. And the whole thing is keeping you entertained while she's busy. Idle hands are the devils' playthings and all that.
You’re humming to yourself since there’s no music. You’re offended by the lack of a radio or anything but Jody probably didn’t count on being gone this long. Or the fact that you’d start doing chores in her absence. She’s going to smack you upside the head when she gets back but the dishes will be done so you know she’ll be grateful too.
It’s a particularly stirring moment of the tuneless song you’re humming when the back door slams open, “Jody! Little help here!” Two hulking masses of flannel amble in with no consideration for the fact that they are total stranger dangers.
Obviously, you scream.
The noise begins shrill and high pitched. Like how you imagine Macaulay Culkin screams now that he’s come of age. Then it morphs into a roar of attack all without taking a breath.
Of the two men who have burst in unannounced and covered in blood, the taller one scrunches up his entire face. Dramatics aside you’d think the noise is causing more pain than whatever injury he has. The shorter one leans his friend against the wall and then raises his hands in a calming, defensive position, “sweetheart…”
You finally take in some air, by which time Jody has come running in guns blazing. But you’re not some defensive, wilting wallflower. You can look after yourself. You dip your hands into sink again hoping to find a knife or other sharp kitchen implement. What you yank out, dragging a trail of dirty, soapy water with it, is a metal potato masher. Determined to not die like this you do the only that seems reasonable since Jody hasn’t fired a shot yet.
You throw the damn thing.
It spins as it cuts through the air and hits the shorter man square in the face. Success. You’ve fended off your attacker, or at the very least softened him up. Now all you need is some butter and you’re in business.
“Shit!” He growls as he rubs the wet spot on his face while your weapon clatters to the floor.
“Y/N! Y/N! It’s fine.” Jody’s tucking her gun away and stepping between you and the potential murderers, before you attack again. “I know these dummies.”
She throws a pointed look in their direction as you finally feel your heartbeat calm enough to think rationally. “They didn’t knock.” It’s the most important thing your coherent mind wants to say. You’re not crazy, because it’s them who are uncivilized.
She smiles at you like you’re a child but her tone is clearly meant to chastise the lumberjacks behind her. “That’s right they didn’t knock because they were born in a frickin’ barn. Y/N, this is Sam and Dean.”
They’re both introduced together so there’s a solid minute where you’re still not sure which one is which. You only know that collectively they form a duo known as ‘Sam and Dean’. The taller one, all hair in his face, whichever one he is, seems to be struggling to stand straight. Although, considering his height the air might be that much thinner up there.
“Listen, Jody, we’re real sorry to barge in like this but Sam he’s-” it’s the shorter one talking, at least now you know which is which.
Jody takes one look at Sam and her friendly annoyance becomes motherly concern real quick.
“What the hell happened to you guys?” You watch your friend go across the room and eyeball Sam's blood-soaked undershirt. Dean, still watching you with annoyed suspicion in case of more flying utensils, pulls her in to whisper in hushed tones. She pushes him back with an elbow to the ribs, “what am I going to do with you two? Help me get him upstairs.”
“Jody what’s…” you start.
“Y/N I’m sorry maybe it’s best if you went on home?” She doesn’t outrightly say she’s throwing you out but it sure as hell sounds like she’s throwing you out.
Dean chooses then to grit his teeth at Sam’s weight back on his shoulders. You scan his body for the source of the pain and see a sizeable cut in his now red stained jeans.
“At least let me help him with that while you help… um, Sam.”
Dean looks about ready to argue but Jody catches your meaning and rolls her eyes. “So, you’re both hurt?” She sighs like they're both so exhausting although you can read the worry behind it.
“It’s fine, I’m fine. Can you just patch up him please?”
“Sure, I’ll patch him up. While my nice doctor friend takes a look at you.”
Dean doesn’t argue but then Jody has that power over the majority of people she meets. Sheriff or not, she gets her way most of the time.
You follow behind them as Jody carries most of the weight but somehow they manage to get Sam moving. Between the three of them, it’s all limbs and sideways shuffles but they move him upstairs and out of sight.
Everything happened so quickly that the sudden silence of the room now that it’s empty is deafening. There’s scraping furniture and muffled yelling from above while you’re left there staring at your nails.
A minute later and Dean starts hobbling back down the stairs. Apparently, he’s forgotten you’re there because he’s grimacing with every step now that Jody and Sam are gone. It’s only halfway down that he notices you still standing in the middle of the living room and straightens his jaw. “I’m fine by the way."
“You sure look fine,” your arm stiffly points at the dining table. “Sit.”
He grumbles under his breath but still slumps into the chair, Jody and her superpower must be rubbing off on you.
You lean over and use careful, measured touches to peel the frayed denim away from the cut. You don’t normally deal with patients so you’re paying extra attention to the pressure of your fingers. Shooting for gentle. It still has to hurt though. The cut is deeper than it looks. “Dean right?”
“Yeah.” He grinds through clenched teeth.
You stand up swiftly. Quickly enough to give yourself headrush if you weren’t so focused on the task at hand. “The jeans, lose ‘em”.
You don’t hang around to see his mouth twist in confusion. There’s a first aid kit under the sink, god knows what Jody is using upstairs. You know where it is because you’d been here a few months back when Claire cut her hand on something or other. Of course, she’d only needed a bandage at the time but you know it will have the tools you need now. In the past, you’ve never questioned why your friend has such a large at home medical kit. Now you’re guessing evenings like this are why.
When you wander back into the living room with the hefty plastic box in your arms you’re instantly irritated at the sight of Dean still clothed. “Do you need help taking those off?”
There’s a reason you don’t work in clinical or surgery, you have a shitty bedside manner. Though Dean, to his merit, seems to be riling you up extra fast.
“I don’t need to take these off.” For someone who looks like a male stripper he sure is being a brat about taking off his pants.
“That cut needs stitches and I need to see what I’m doing if I’m going to sew you up all pretty. Normally I’d cut them off but I’m guessing you want to be a big boy about this?”
He frowns petulantly, then sighs and finally starts working on his belt and fly. “Don’t get excited or anything sweetheart. This is strictly professional.” He’s trying to claw back some of whatever macho bravado he thinks he has.
“Don’t fall in love. Got it.” You quip back at him complete with a finger gun. It’s all fun and games anyway. That is until his pants drop.
The guy is handsome. That’s not a question. He’s an Adonis. You don’t need to dwell on the sharpness of his jaw, the emerald hue of his eyes or his lips that are the perfect mathematical curve for kissing the fuck out of.
But the guy almost murdered you tonight, in your mind at least. So, you’d made an effort to not let yourself be distracted by his face. You’d been doing well so far. You hadn’t looked at him much at all, even if you’d thought about it.
At least you hadn't looked until those pants dropped.
It’s hard to pinpoint what makes your throat tighten. Is it his black boxer briefs that leave nothing to the imagination? Probably. The guys got a third arm for crying out loud. And it’s so inappropriate that you’re even noticing but damn, those thighs. He's got those bowed legs, which are hot on a regular day, except Dean also has these thighs that are pure sin. Toned, muscled tree trunks that look like they could slam into you with all the force off…
He whistles, waves a hand to his face and lets a self-satisfied smirk settle on his lips. “I’m up here sweetheart.”
Oh god, you’d been staring. It wasn’t professional but then again your patients are usually a lot less chatty and a hell of a lot less handsome. No one is handsome when they’re dead. It’s not your fault. You’re at Jody’s. You hadn’t been prepared for this.
Somehow you have the gall to act affronted by his accusation, “and your gaping wound is down there genius. I’m a doctor for crying out loud.”
Good. He looks confused like he can’t decide if you’re a pervert or medical professional. The truth is a little of both. It’s hardly your fault that his cut goes all the way up his thigh to the edge of his underwear. Wait, what if it goes further? No. No, it can’t.
Once you open the first aid kit everything flows on autopilot and his dumb half-naked body fades into the background. You know this, it’s as easy as blinking. You sterilize the needle and lay everything out like you're at work. A latex glove gets pulled over each hand and you remind yourself to be careful since he’s still breathing.
"This is going to hurt," you warn him with alcohol in your hand.
“I’ll be fi- shit!” He’s so busy trying to be brave that he doesn’t brace himself for the sting as you clean the cut and blood drying on his skin. His fists clench at his sides but other than that he stays deadly still while you finish.
Then when you're ready to put Humpty Dumpty back together again you find yourself pausing to look down at his leg. You’re too high off the ground to do this without killing your back. You already know that there’s only one solution and as much as you don’t want to you slide to the floor. Resting your knees between his thigh gap, all the better to stitch him up.
Whatever he wants to say he holds in. Thankfully. If you’ve got to ignore being this close to his dick then the least he can do is keep his perfect mouth shut.
It’s a grueling silence at first. You’re not talking because you’re concentrating on how many stitches you want to make. He’s not talking, you imagine because it hurts. It's only after the first few stitches are tied that he’s used to the jab of the needle enough to speak.
“So, you’re a doctor huh? That how you met Jody?”
You’d shrug or laugh if your hands weren’t busy, “I mean, I’m a doctor but not a doctor doctor. We actually met over a dead body.”
He stiffens under your touch and you don’t think it’s because you hit a nerve. Unfortunately, it’s not an unusual reaction when you tell people about your line of work.
“I’m a pathologist. So, I deal exclusively in bodily fluids, specimens, and autopsies. I mean, I’m great at stitching things but my patients are normally pretty stiff.”
He laughs at you and the sound is refreshing. There are no questions about why you’d want to cut open a dead body or how you can stand to do it. “That why you don’t have the whole soothing doctor thing going on?”
“Exactly. I never was a soft touch and cadavers don’t talk back.”
You’re going faster now. He isn’t so tense under your fingers and you’re finding a rhythm.
“I can’t believe I’m nearly finished and you still haven't told me how you got this.”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you darlin’”
God knows what it is about the way he says darling but it stops you from sinking the needle into him again, at least for a second. From your kneeling position between his legs, you can’t help but look up at him through your lashes. His tongue darts out to wet his lips and you wonder if you're the only one who can taste your heartbeat.
“Try me.” You don’t even know what you mean when you say it. You don’t even know what you're offering.
Jody does.
“Y/N! Dean! What the hell?”
Jody is standing at the bottom of the stairs with a freshly sewn together Sam, who is better able to support himself on the banister. And they’re both wearing equally shocked looks. All raised eyebrows and open mouths. It’s only when you look up at Dean again and how the green of his eyes has all but disappeared that you understand.
No less than an hour ago Dean burst in as a stranger. Now you're on your knees in front of him while his jeans and belt sit around his ankles. And when you paused to stare into his eyes like a lovesick puppy you rested your hand on his uninjured thigh. Something you’re only noticing as the heat of him seeps into your fingers.
Yeah, you can understand what Jody thinks she's walked in on. You get what this looks like.
“It’s not what it… I just have one more stitch and then he’s free to go.”
Well, now it sounds like you’re the one who orchestrated all this. Like you’re keeping Dean here against his will. He doesn't seem to notice their entrance. Or care. He hasn’t stopped looking at you with this curl to his lips like he thinks the whole thing is so damn funny. He might be right. You’d see the funny side if it wasn’t you on your knees.
You tie and cut the last stitch with Sam and Jody whispering as your soundtrack. As soon as you’re done you jump up and pretend that you don't need to get away from the heat between his thighs. 
“I… erm. I need should wrap that up and you need to keep it dry for a few days.”
“Whatever you say doc.”
It’s not fair that he’s so comfortable now. You almost regret stitching him up. Now that Dean isn't in pain he's far more dangerous than when he was busting in the kitchen to kill you.
Jody’s helping Sam to the sofa even though he insists he’s fine and they’re both so there. But Dean's still looking at you like they don't exist.
You pick up the gauze intending to wrap his thigh and realize with him sitting this might be harder than it looks. “Um, can you…?” You point upwards to motion standing without thinking of the consequences.
You bend down again to wrap his thigh only realizing halfway through that because he’s standing you’re now eye level with his dick.
His barely concealed by his underwear dick.
You cut the gauze probably before you should and secure it so you can jump back again. The smile on Jody’s face definitely isn’t making you want to blush. It’s just a dick. Every second person has them. Or at least, that’s what you’re telling yourself.
“Ok, you’re good to go.” You say loudly enough for the room while packing up the first aid kit.
He pulls up his still bloodstained, ripped jeans chuckling to himself, “thanks, doll. Hope I was a better patient than a dead body.”
“Debatable,” you glance at him out the corner of your eye.
He holds a hand to his chest dramatically, still staring at you, as Sam hauls himself up again. “Come on dude, we’ve still got to clean up that thing.”
Dean all but ignores Sam, once again focussing on you. “Right right. I should swing by and see you though? Get these stitches removed by a professional?”
Jody starts pushing Dean out the door, finally sick of them both, “if you wouldn’t mind not accosting my friends. Any more than you already have.”
“I’ll see you in a week! Doctors orders!” you call out from behind Jody. She closes the door giving you a look that’s half warning and half judgment.
You 100% don’t care.

Welcome to day 12!
Now, since we are doing three days a week, day 12 is the last day of week 4! That means that, at the end of today, we will have been doing this for ONE MONTH!

So I want you to think back to the first day you started exercising with me. How long ago does that seem? Has the time flown by? Are you completely blown away that the month has ended already? Or has it been a struggle every day and week?

Now, on to today’s topic!
Speaking of hitting our one month point, let’s talk about progress.
So, I have talked before about the importance of weighing and how you should also have non-scale victories.
On bodybuilding.com, registered dietitian Paul Salter, said this “The thing about weight is that it's really just one piece of the progress puzzle; it's not the piece. Exercise performance, appearance, measurements, energy level, body-fat percentage—all of these things indicate important changes, but you can't measure them as readily as weight.”
He asks these questions: “Have you found a routine that works for you? Do you feel like you're in control of your situation? Is your nutrition humming along, or is it a raging tire fire? Are you pushing yourself adequately, but also recovering adequately? These things are far more important than a single number.”
Today we’re going to talk about some of those other metrics for assessing your progress.

I’m using this for appearance, but you all should take pictures or videos too. I know it is hard, because you don’t want to have a reminder of yourself at this weight, and especially one without your big baggy concealing clothes. But it can be a good way to track your changes.
You can always take a mirror selfie, but you can get a better shot with a helper or using a timer and your phone.
Measurements
Now measurements, I also shared, and I’ll show them here.

I intend to do these once a month, so I’m not obsessing, but hopefully I’ll see some progress by the six month mark. And I’ll actually post that update on the first, next week, because we are a month in! Yeah!
I don’t expect my measurements to change too much just yet, at my one month check in, because I’m not doing any actual strength training to tone my body, and my nutrition isn’t there yet, but again, by that six month mark I’m hoping for some smaller numbers.
If you want to take some measurements, you’ll need a flexible tape measure. These come in sewing kits, and you can almost always find them in the dollar store or in the grocery store in the, like, emergency sewing area, with the patches for pants and stuff.

You don’t want to use a construction tape measure, even though it has some flexibility, because it is not as flexible as you need. Now, this is easier with a helper - and not a kitty helper like my baby - but someone like Roly Mama. She helped with mine. You want to make sure that your helper isn’t cutting off your circulation trying to get smaller numbers. And you don’t want to be flexing. Just hold your arm out, or prop your leg up on a chair or step, and let it be natural.
So that’s measurements. You can see the list of ones I did: neck, bust or chest, waist, hips, thigh, biceps, and calf.
Energy Level/Stamina
So, I will be the first to admit, that I currently get winded going up the stairs too quickly. When I was working at my old job, I had much better stamina because I was more active. I was walking every day, and I lived on a third floor walkup, and my bedroom was upstairs within my apartment, so I was using the stairs a lot. I had much better stamina then, though I was too stressed out to lose any weight.
So when I can walk up three flights of stairs without getting winded, I’ll know that my stamina is back up to where it was. And it might even get better!
Exercise performance
So, when I had more stamina, I was also performing better at exercise. I was walking 5Ks somewhat regularly - you might have noticed my 5K shirts - and though I was only walking, I was able to do it in under an hour and a half without dying. I even walked a couple of 10Ks. So I had much better stamina.
When I’m able to walk a 5K or up 4 flights of stairs without collapsing, I’ll know that my stamina is getting better - back to where it was when I was more active. My goal is to eventually be able to actually run a 5K and then a 10K, so I will be able to track how that improves.
With stamina and activity level, it is easy to set personal goals for yourself. And you can break them down into small chunks. Like, one flight of stairs without being winded. Then two flights, then three. Or walk a 5K, then walk a 10K, then run a 5K, etc. Set those small goals for yourself and see what you can achieve.
Right now, I complete this short workout on this bike, or I do an easy 30 minute walk, and my thighs are doing that tingly popping thing after. I will know my performance has improved when it takes 45 minutes or an hour to get that same level of tingles.
Routine
So routine can be a lot of things, like we talked about sleep routines and bedtime routines. There’s also the exercise routine. I’m doing the 3 times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and I hope you’re doing it along with me on the days that work for you.
And I’m doing the No Zero Day May, walking every day. I’m establishing these routines, and as I keep them up, I’ll be able to keep track of my progress. A calendar or app is great for this!
Feeling of control
This, I think, ties more into nutrition and eating. When you have that out of control food feeling, which I’ve had before. Since I haven’t tackled my nutrition yet - that’s coming, but I don’t want to get overwhelmed by starting everything at once.
So, in that respect, I’m not feeling overwhelmed, so I’d say I’m feeling in control.
Pushing Yourself Adequately/Recovering Adequately
These kind of go together; are you pushing yourself enough to feel it, and are you not pushing so hard that you’re dead. And I’d say yes! I’m getting those tingles from working out, but I’m not dead every day. And I’ve only had to take a nap after our walk twice - both early days!
Nutrition Status
So, again, I’m not focused on this one yet, but I will be getting to it soon, and we’ll cover it then. But again, taking “before” assessments and then tracking it throughout!
Fit of Clothes
So, my lowest adult weight, I was pretty comfortably wearing medium tops and size 12 jeans. I’m currently in 2-3XL and 24W. That is scary to say out loud. But, again, I’m looking to change that. So I know that, when I can fit back into my 22W jeans, and when a 2X is baggy instead of comfortable, I will have made progress.
I have those goal clothes that I’m waiting for, but, I’m not setting myself up for failure by having only my size 12s and mediums as goals. I’m aiming for each next size of jeans and tops. I will throw a party when I hit 2XL, and 22W jeans. Because that is a huge step for me!
Don’t only pull out those clothes from five or eight years ago! Set yourself up for success with small increments! One size down at a time is the way to lose 12 sizes!
Body Fat Percentage
So, this one is the hardest to do at home. In fact it might be impossible. You see on shows like the Biggest Loser - in the later seasons - they would do this thing where they dip you underwater to find your body fat percentage and all these crazy things.
Ain’t nobody got time for that!
But, there is an almost do-it-at-home yerself way!

So, I found this thing, actually, because they advertised at my old job, and I found it really helpful. The company is called Body-Comp, and you can go to their store, but also they have this big, mobile bus, which they take to places, and you can go there.
Like I said, they came to my work the first time, but they also go regularly to gyms and places like that. And you don’t have to be an employee or a member of the gym or whatever, because it is out in the parking lot in their bus.
So you can go at any time, and it only takes 15 minutes.
What you do, is you lay on this table, and this scanner just goes over your head, takes about 5-6 minutes for that part, and it does a full body scan. A DEXA scan.
Then you get this great doc emailed to you with your scan and all these breakdowns. And yes, I am going to do the scary thing and share mine with you.

So right at the top, it shows your body fat percentage, your mass (weight), and how much of you is fat tissue or lean tissue. Now, one of the big things is when you think about “oh, muscles weigh more than fat” - well this breaks it down for you. You know how much weight is muscle and how much is fat.
So you can see that, in March, when I did this, I weighed 272.7 that day, and my body fat was at 55.5%. So I had 151.4 pounds of fat tissue, and 115.4 pounds of lean tissue. And that fat tissue one is almost my weight loss goal. My goal for my height to be comfortable in my body is 150 pounds, assuming that I don’t really have muscles built up, though “officially” I should be 130 for my height. So from 270 to 150 is 120 pounds to lose, or, if I’m going for the 130, that would be 140 to lose.
And that’s basically - I have 150 pounds of fat, and I should lose basically all of that. 120-140 of that 150.
So, the other thing it does is give you this picture of your body.

So you can see the yellow is fat and gunk, and the orange is lean. So you can see, you gotta have something positive. And my calves are mostly muscle, not fat. I’m proud of that, darn it.
I think this is a remnant of when I was doing those 5Ks, but my calves are on fire! You have to be happy about something on your body, and for me that’s my calves!

And like I said, you can go back every 6 or 12 months and see how you are improving. Now, going to one of their mobile busses is cheaper than their store, but it does still cost $49 a pop. But, you can buy a four-pack for only $175 and save yourself $20. And you use them later.

Now, small caveat, Body Comp is based in Southern California, so if you aren’t there, they won’t be convenient for you. There’s another company, DexaFit, which has more locations around the US and Canada, but I don’t have personal experience with them. But I assume that the process is similar.
But! I bring them up, because you can use their site to get an idea of what all these things are called, and what they do, and then you can then find a resource in your area.

What is Progressive Overload? (+How to Do It)
So you want answers to the question, “What is Progressive Overload?”
Well my friend, you’ve arrived at the perfect place.
Progressive overload is one of the key principles of strength training, which is why we focus on it extensively with our coaching clients. Today, we’ll share these same principles with you too.

What Is Progressive Overload?

In the video above, I walk you through the ins and outs of progressive overload.
First, let’s give a definition:
For strength training, progressive overloading is doing slightly more than last time – like lifting a heavier weight or doing one more rep.
The name of the game is overloading our current capabilities, slowly but surely.
By doing this consistently, we get stronger – since our bodies adapt to the ever-increasing demands placed on them. 
Said another way, without overload, there is no adaptation by the body.
When you challenge your body through resistance training, it responds with:
Neuromuscular adaptations and increased coordination. After some resistance training, the nerves in your muscles will fire better, making them more responsive. Plus, the more you do a movement, the better you’ll get at it (coordination).[1]
Increased muscle and bone mass. When you subject your muscles and bones to resistance training, they grow larger and stronger.[2]
Improvement in connective tissue strength. Not only will your muscles grow stronger after progressively overloading them, but so will all the connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, etc.).[3]
Increased lactic acid tolerance. When you exercise intensely, lactic acid will build up and eventually slow you down. But the more and more you progressively overload, the more of a tolerance you’ll build up to lactic acid.[4]
Don’t worry about the terminology here. 
You can think of progressive overload much like a video game:
When you start an RPG, the first bad guys you encounter will be weak. They only give you a little bit of XP for defeating them. They’re probably rats or slimes or something.
Once you beat a bunch of these rats, you’ll accumulate enough XP that you can level up and fight something else (a goblin perhaps).
As you keep fighting tougher and tougher enemies, eventually, you’ll be able to take down a dragon!
Working out is the same thing:
At first, you might only be able to do push-ups against a wall. NBD! Knock out these wall push-ups until they start feeling easier, then begin doing push-ups on a counter-top (this is progressive overloading!). 
Continue to put in the work and decrease the height of your push-ups until you’re doing them on the ground! Congrats, dragon slayed! 
So whenever you’re following a progressive overload strategy, just tell yourself “I am earning XP here to grow strong.”
How Do I Overload My Muscles? (8 Ways to Progressive Overload)
There are all sorts of ways for you to achieve progressive overload.
Here are eight strategies for increasing work and overloading your muscles:
#1) Increase the weight. This is the most common way to make a weighted exercise in the gym more challenging. We’ll talk a bit later about how to choose the correct weight.
#2) Increase the reps. This is the other most common way to make things more challenging. So instead of 10 push-ups, go for 11. Then 12 the next time. And so on.
#3) Increase the sets. So instead of doing 3 sets of 10 push-ups, you can do 4 sets of 10 push-ups, then 5 sets of 10 push-ups, etc.
#4) Increase the frequency of your workouts. Let’s say you work out twice a week, Monday and Thursday. Maybe we add an extra day, so Monday-Wednesday-Friday. That way we get more total work in for the week.
#5) Decrease rest time. Instead of increasing the weight, or reps, or sets – you simply decrease the time you rest between sets. This will tax your body more and might be a good option for some, based on their goals and schedule (especially if you are short on workout time already).
#6) Doing more difficult variations. This is relevant for bodyweight exercises in particular, where we’re not adding weight to anything.

Or back to the example of push-ups, you can do them against a wall, then a counter-top, then the floor.
Switches like that would make the movement more challenging, and thus an overload strategy.
#7) Slow down through the range of motion. Play around with the exercise tempo! If you take a longer time to do a push-up, you’ll increase the time your muscles are under tension and working.
#8) Hold the position. Just like slowing down, this will increase the time under tension for the muscles, and therefore more work. You could pause at the bottom of your squat:

For any given workout, there’s likely a way to make it more challenging, and thus, perfect for progressive overload.
Let’s now chat about when to make an exercise more difficult.
How Do I Know When I’m Ready for Progressive Overload?
The key to progressive overload is continuing to make a workout more and more challenging. 
How do you know when it’s time to move up?
Unfortunately, you won’t start glowing with stars after you’ve completed a certain number of workouts.
We’ll probably have to wait for the “singularity” for that.
However, you’ll know when you’re ready to increase weight or intensity when you complete the prescribed number of sets and reps for an exercise, and you still feel like you could do a few more reps.
This will happen MUCH more often for a beginner.
Here’s what’s going on:
When you just start working out, you’ll adapt and progress quickly. Much of this is just from improved coordination and comfort with the exercise.
That means you’ll be able to progressively overload at a faster rate – likely adding weight or intensity every workout or every week.
It’s important to understand that progressive overload won’t continue upwards forever.
For example: If you started benching 45 pounds, and added 5 pounds every week, after two years you’d be benching over 500 pounds.

But that’s not how it works.
After a while, progress will go slower and slower.
You may even plateau and sit at a certain intensity for several weeks or more. That’s ok.
It’s hard to say how long you’ll be at each stage.
How fast you can progressively overload depends on a lot of factors, such as:
Your training
Your nutrition
Your recovery
Your age
With that being said, don’t be afraid to test the waters with a more difficult exercise. You can always go back down if it doesn’t feel right.
But do move up from time to time. It might surprise you how much more you can handle!
How Much Weight Do You Add to Progressively Overload?
Normally, we recommend going up in small increments when adding weight to your exercises.
For barbell lifts, adding 5 pounds (or about 2.5 kilos) to each side is generally a good rule of thumb. 
That would be an increase of 10 pounds or 5 kilos for the entire lift. So you might go from benching 75 to 85 lbs.
This rate of increase is an average recommendation but may differ based on what exercise you are doing.
For upper body lifts, this may be too much of an increase for you. In that case, look to add 2.5 pounds or about 1 kilo – to each side of the bar. That would be an increase of 5 lbs or 2 kilos for the entire lift. If that’s too much of an increase, there are smaller fractional plates that allow you to increase weight in even smaller quantities than that.
For lower body lifts, we may want to add more weight – so 10 pounds – or about 5 kilos to each side of the bar. That would be an increase of 20 lbs or 10 kilos for the entire lift. So you might go from deadlifting 135 lbs to 155 lbs.
For either case, if you are using dumbbells, increase the weight of the dumbbell by whatever amount you’d add to the side of the bar (e.g. 5 lbs per side = 5 lbs per dumbbell).

Is Progressive Overload Bad for You?
The biggest danger with progressive overload simply comes down to increasing faster than your body can adapt.
Are you ready for handstand push-ups? 
Is a 315-pound deadlift a big jump in weight for you?
There’s nothing inherently dangerous about those movements. BUT, I have seen plenty of folks rush to do more…then not be ready.
That’s how you can end up hurt. 
So start your training by doing less than you think, including lifting just the bar – or even a broomstick:

When you’re adding more weight or increasing the intensity of an exercise, go in small increments.
There’s no rush.
Do You Always Have to Progressively Overload?
Do you always have to keep increasing the weight or difficulty or reps that you’re doing?
No!
It’s perfectly fine and normal to hold steady at a certain level.
You are still moving around and getting a ton of great benefits, like:
Improving your mood.[5]
Helping with weight loss.[6]
Keeping your bones strong.[7]
Making you more energetic.[8] 
Reducing your risk of chronic disease.[9]
Don’t let the thought of “needing” to continuously work harder scare you off from exercise.
It’s up to you how far you push things, and there is no right decision for everyone. Do what works best for you.
