Come Down That Tree! (An aftermare story)
Chapter 16: Kutya pamutambo wemaruva
A week or so had passed since his little soul-to-soul with Geno and his injury…
While that arm was not fully healed yet, the other didn’t seem that bothered about it and even regained almost all of his limb’s mobility. He told them he got all of it back but Nightmare noticed how stiffly he moved it and how he favored his right even though it was obvious it wasn’t his dominant hand.
Nightmare bit into his piece of pear pie. It was sweet and juicy. They didn’t have such high-quality snacks everydays, so he was planning to enjoy it.
How long has Geno been here now?
The weather had yet to turn cold so it couldn’t have been that long.
It felt like it however.
The guardian licked his fingers clean and glanced at the other two. They were silently sharing some lemon bread.
The village must be in a good mood, it was more and more frequent to see Dream coming back bearing a full basket of food and gifts. They even now had a spare blanket and an old cushion they decided to lend to their guest.
…Do you still consider someone who stayed for long at your home and wasn’t showing any sign of moving out as a guest?
Geno met his eyes and slightly inclined his head.
He averted his gaze to watch a random blade of grass.
Oh, a ladybug.
“Is the pie any good?”
Nightmare nodded in his brother’s direction, not feeling like talking just yet.
“Nice. I’ll keep my part for later.”
If the definition of “guest” was, as of now, outdated to describe Geno then…what was he?
“I’ll put the basket away. You should go for an afternoon nap, Geno, you look tired.”
That was true the other had progressively slouched against his cushion during the meal and his dimming eyelight seemed to scream sleep.
He didn’t even answer the proposition and promptly klonked out.
That capacity to fall asleep fast and clean was impressive.
Nightmare stood up, dusting himself off and calmly helped Dream cleaning the last traces of their meal…while keeping an eye on the sleeper.
He couldn’t help but be pensive about all that.
He couldn’t lie to himself anymore. He didn't hate Geno. He didn’t fear him either, even though he saw hints again and again of how volatile and dangerous he could be.
Nothing happened recently.
It had been quiet.
They talked a lot. About books. About the sky. About childhood adventures and stories.
It was… nice.
And if he often found himself slightly leaning against his shoulder to sleep at night, that was his problem.
Two amber wells entered his field of vision without warnings and startled him.
“What are you thinking about ?”
He caught himself with one hand against the tree before answering.
“Nothing, nothing at all.”
He couldn’t say any of his thoughts, he wouldn’t hear the end of it if he told him he was thinking about how he didn’t despise Geno anymore.
“Hmmmm, I’ll let that slide… For now!”
With that said, Dream all but jumped on him and he barely avoided falling again. Shifting his feet to stand steadier, he glared at his brother.
This one was making pitiful wet eyes and he knew -oh he knew…- that he was going to be asked something he wouldn’t like soon.
“Soooo, I was thinking…”
And there it was…
“What were you thinking…?”
The doubt and carefulness he tried to convoy didn’t seem to deter his brethren. Sadly.
“You noticed how I’ve been given more gifts recently…?”
“I did… I assume the village’s mood is high for some reason?”
He got shaken quite roughlessly by that overly excited puppy.
“YES! Today is the first day of the Verflor festival so place is absolutely decked out in flowers! And there’re food stands and dances and music and we need to go!”
Nightmare gripped his arm, focusing on the sensation of a fistful of fabric under his fingers.
“We…?”
“...Yes, we. Come on! It’s been ages since the last time you went down! You didn’t even go borrow books recently…”
Dream trailed off for a second before bouncing back into his plea with gusto.
“I know we’ll have a blast! I’m pretty sure the central bookstore said they wanted to put up a stand with newly arrived finds, you can’t miss that!”
Oh he could. But the offer sounded slightly less bad after that statement, somehow. He was still not convinced.
“I’m not su-”
“And don’t wake up Geno. Guy’s great but you spent so much time with him recently. Can’t I request some wholesome brother bonding time when I really feel up to it?”
Yeah, he was not winning against this one. Might as well give up, enter the village for five minutes, find a random excuse and go back right away. Easier than to argue now.
“...Ok, fine. We can go for a bit.”
He was promptly released as Dream twirled around, looking truly enchanted by the news. After a few seconds of this show, Nightmare was once again caught by the arm and pulled harshly enough to make him stumble (again).
That day was going to be exhausting, wasn’t it?
“LESSSSS’GO!”
Surprisingly, the ruckus did not rouse Geno out of his food coma and they runned down the hill, clumsily, as they dug every once in a while their elbows into each other’s ribs.
And soon.
Sooner than Nightmare would have liked if he had a word on the matter.
They reached the village.
And, as promised, the verflor festival was in full display.
Fresh flowers -that kids must have collected early in the morning- were decorating every possible surface. Daylilies and bacopa pots were proudly displayed under each window. The mix of perfume was so strong that he wondered briefly how nobody fainted yet -as far as he knew. A bird-like teen was running around with a water can, making sure the heat was not getting to the vegetation.
That task must have taken all their focus as they almost bumped into him…and apologized without even looking.
The lean feathered guy just runned off to their next pot and fussed over a slightly damaged balloon flower.
“It’s been so long since the last time we went together to that event! How long has it been again?”
Nightmare pretended to think before giving his twin the answer he could have given in a blink.
“6 years, I think.We needed fresh flowers.”
“Ah yes I remember, maybe we should pick up some today as well?”
“...yeah, we should.”
Dream clapped his hands, looking satisfied.
“Then it’s settled! We look around, enjoy the event and pick up some plants -and maybe a book if you find something interesting?- before going home!”
And without waiting for an answer, Dream grabbed his hand and started energetically walking and making comments on how each display of flowers were installed and by who.
Surprisingly, he found himself infected by the other’s joy and quickly started truly appreciating the evening. Some people watched him curiously and some others were sending some rather nasty glares but he ignored all that and focused on his brother’s unending chatting.
They picked up some flowers and put them down their pockets, uncaring of if they’d survive the trip. A flower didn’t stop being pretty just for some bruises and missed bits after all. And both of them were now wearing flowers breaded firmly into their crowns, almost fully masking the glistening metal. Coreopsis, poppies and some treasure flowers for Dream. Delphiniums, lilies-of-the-Nile and some drooping verbenas for him.
The day was sunny and rays bounced across the windows, producing rainbows in water puddles.
The people were merry and colorful dresses and shirts were twirling around in every corner.
It was loud.
It was bonded.
It was so many things he usually avoided.
But somehow…
It was nice.
He could see a table set just down the street with books laying on. From here, he thought he could recognize a cover or two. That red one with the white handle casting a shadow of a knife’s blade, for example, was the cover of a story that was hard to forget…
“Dream, I want to make a stop at the book table just there!”
Dream didn’t answer and soon, he realized he wasn’t holding his hand anymore.
“He can’t be far, he was blabbering about some pie smell just a moment ago…”, he muttered as a self-reassurance.
When had he let go? Or was Dream the one who let go?
The streets suddenly seemed less welcoming.
It was loud.
It was bonded.
It was so many things he usually avoided.
After getting bumped into a few times (and getting insulted for it), Nightmare scooted against a wall and fiddled with his fingers, keeping an eye on the crowd moving around.
He just needed to find Dream and they could leave that place and all would be well! There wasn’t any need for stress here.
Everything was swell.
His hands were pulling on any bit of fabric he could grab onto and he really hoped it wouldn’t tear from the abuse later.
Where are you?
People are staring.
People are judging.
They’re staring. They’re staring. They’re staring.
Calm down, Night’. Deep breaths. Happy thoughts.
His legs were shaking and he couldn’t afford being seen panicking so far from his haven.
They’re staring.
That guy is staring. The children are staring and giggling at his misfortune. That mother is mocking him.
Even that dog is against him.
He needed…out!
But Dream?
Why did he leave him here alone?
Why did he drag him there at all?
Did he…?
A glint of golden metal caught his attention and he dashed in that direction.
Dream!
Unfortunately, he lost the trace fast but he kept running through a few streets just in case.
He just couldn’t bear everything so he sped off into smaller and emptier streets until he was finally alone.
Then, he crashed in this tiny dingy one-way street that smelled of anything but flowers and wept on his knees for a while.
Why must he be like that? Five seconds alone in the street and he started acting worse than a toddler. No wonder he was hated around here… He must have been such an easy target that any aspiring violence couldn’t help but look his way and see a snack.
His pants were damp from his tears before he calmed down enough to close the watergates.
The guardian raised his head to look around.
It was a fairly narrow space but some could still stand up without being squished together.
Beside the walls, he could see the sky and even the top of their tree, merely a green stain dotted with warm gold and purplish black against the blue of the day.
So small.
Nightmare sighed and vowed to only rest a bit more before heading back home.
That corner was void of flowers and he relaxed in their absence.
Wind was making dance two lonely leaves that swirled and twirled before being stopped by a wall then the ballet stopped until a new burst guided them to a new barrier and this, again and again.
Far away he could still hear some laughter and music but he ignored the background noise.
He ignored the distant steps, running and dancing, enjoying the celebration.
He ignored all those sounds to focus on the leaves, on the crown’s weight on his head, on the warm feeling traveling through his vessel of a body and some forgotten tune, he couldn’t name but felt soothing, flowed out of him.
He shouldn’t have, probably.
He shouldn’t have blocked out the rest.
Maybe if he hadn’t…
He could have slipped away in time.
Before the steps were not so distant.
Before the voices were right in front of him.
Before he was trapped with these three.
But he did, so when two monsters and a human showed up, he was taken by surprise.
After that?
There wasn’t much of a conversation. It had been a very one-sided ordeal.
They pushed him, making his thoughts rattle each time his back hit bricks.
Stay calm, they’ll get bored soon.
The purple hare tugged on his sleeves until they ripped.
He already went through this dance and song enough to know how to act to minimize dommages.
The plant bear clapped and hummed, not participating but enjoying it nonetheless.
Do not retaliate, it would only aggravate the situation.
“Ah that’s boring, let’s up the game a bit!”
He had been too boring, that wasn’t going to end well.
The last lanky teenager looked at him for a second before leaping towards his head.
“Give me that circlet thing! That’s too fancy for you!”
A scalding warmth spread through his bones at these words. And he dodged and let the guy crash against the bricks at his turn.
That was where he drew the limit.
Nightmare winced at the harsh sound of flesh hitting solid and crouched down in an action ready.
He wasn’t going to allow those to even dare touch his crown.
Soon, joyful expressions turned sour and he was attacked once again.
Some vigorous kicks made one tumble while another retreated.
One was on the ground, grumbling about stained clothes.
One was looking at him, calculating.
And the last…?
Strong arms caught him under the armpits and he was left wiggling in the air, captive by the superior strength of the bear monster who was towering over him by their sheer size.
Ah. He had lost fast.
He squeezed his eyes shut in anticipation as his aggressors came closer.
Then…
Nothing.
Silence.
A tremor runned through his holder and he wondered…
What could have made them hesitate all of the sudden?

In the morning Lila Kurtzberg stood in the bathroom brushing her tooth in front of the mirror with a neutral facial expression. From the corridor, which was connected with the bathroom Nathaniel appeared still wearing his boxers from sleeping and passed by Lila and gave her a kiss on her cheek.
„Good Morning Lila“ Nathaniel greeted the woman and grabbed another cup to take out a blue brush and poured water from the tap on it, afterward he put toothpaste on it to start brushing his teeth and at that moment Lila was done and rinsed her mouth, then cleaned her brush and cup before putting it back.
„Could you sleep well?“ Lila asked earning a nod from the husband. „I‘m sorry that you had to go out of the house in the night, just because we didn‘t have any strawberries“
„It‘s alright“ Nathaniel mumbled as he was brushing his teeth. „Today I‘m off, so there‘s no problem“
Nathaniel passed his mouth with water as he was foam from the paste over his lips, then continued to brush while Lila pulled her shirt up to see her belly, which was a little bigger than last time and she got up on the scale in their bathroom to see the weight and she shrieked as she saw how much weight she had right now.
Nathaniel spit out water from his mouth, then heard Lila sobbing and looked back at her to see her standing on the scale and approached her to see the weight.
„You‘re okay?“ Nathaniel asked watching Lila shake her head.
„Did you see how much weight I gained?“ Lila asked horrified by the number.
„Pumpkin, that‘s normal. You‘ve got our baby in there and he‘s growing with the help of food you‘ve additionally taken to you. The reason you look a little…...blown up there is because the baby is growing and he needs to to be healthy“
„But I look horrendous. I look like a hippo“
„No, you don‘t. You look perfect Lila, just as always,“ Nathaniel cheered the woman up embracing her from behind. „You‘re just…..having mean thoughts in your head. Just like I have it with becoming a dad“
„You‘re just saying that, because you have to“ Lila countered making the redhead shake his head.
„No, I don‘t have to say it. I say it because it‘s the truth“ Nathaniel explained. „I could recite you a lot of words that suit your looks“
„Really?“
„Really, really“
„What for example?“ Lila asked making Nathaniel chuckle sheepishly.
„It would be a good time for me to write a book about it…...so….you‘re pretty, fancy…..attractive….elegant….wonderful…...kind…...your skin is…..nice…...Should I bring up more?“
„It‘s alright babe“ Lila mentioned seeing Nathaniel peck her on the neck, then she elbowed him away from her. „Hey keep your pants on, boy“
„They‘re on, Lila“ Nathaniel mentioned, then noticed down, that he had under his boxers a bulge formed and he was close to Lila‘s butt like that and blushed embarrassed as he figured out, what she actually meant. „Just because this happened it does mean I want to do it. You‘re pregnant. I don‘t want to hurt you or the baby“ „It‘s actually safe Nathy, you don‘t have to worry if you want to do it“
„Eh, I still prefer to not do it. At least in these few months“ Nathaniel pointed out. „I hope that‘s okay for you“ „Sure no problem. If it makes you feel safer and better, I‘m okay with it“
„Thanks Lila“ Nathaniel answered, then Lila sat down on the side of the bathtub and watched Nathaniel wash his cup and brush for his next use and Lila looked out of the window to see several apartment buildings and looked up at her husband, which stored his things back.
„Are you interested in passing by Ivan and Myléne in the afternoon? Lila questioned making her husband shrug his shoulders.
„Aren‘t they going to visit Ivan‘s family today?“ Nathaniel asked making Lila shrug her shoulders unsure about the fact.
„Not that I know“ Lila replied. „Did Ivan say something?“
„No Luka did“ Nathaniel answered. „They had both practiced together in the garage together hours before I met him,“
„Alright I call Myléne afterward. If they‘re gone, we can do something else“
„Should we take a walk again like last time?“ Nathaniel suggested. „I kind of grew attached to us two walking alone together. It‘s sort of peaceful and relaxing“ „Why not. It‘s a great idea“ Lila agreed making the husband smile. A smartphone rang from another room of their house and the two glanced at each other and Lila walked out of the bathroom going to check the call. „It could be my mother“ Lila pointed out. „I‘m going to check it, “ Lila said earning a nod from the husband, which leaned his back on the bow of the entrance to wait for his wife to answer.
In the bedroom of Adrien Agreste, he sat along with Raiden on his couch gaming a racing game together.
„Oh shit, I almost had you“ Raiden complained as on the split-screen on the TV spelled on the top the word game over and under it said Player 2 won.
„Can‘t believe you didn‘t know this short cut“ Adrien mentioned to the raven-haired man. „We‘re driving in Tokyo after all“
„You know the real-life Tokyo and the video game Tokyo don‘t look too 100% alike. A lot of places are missing there“
„Okay I need to admit the same about Paris with those highways and the sewers at the Notre Dame leading to the Louvre“ Adrien pointed out at the response of the gaming mate. „So weve got now 6 to 4 wins. Do you want two more games or are you fine with the results?“
„I want to beat your ass man“ Raiden answered. „Or at least make it a tie“
„Okay….hey, what about we two race both alone, but backward?“ Adrien suggested making Raiden snort at the suggestion.
„That idea is ridiculous…..but I like it“
„It turns more challenging for both of us, hein?“ Adrien asked with a smirk.
„I‘m turning it more challenging. We both pick a golf cart“ Raiden suggested making Adrien laugh.
„That‘s the greatest yet awful idea…..I love it!“ Adrien agreed, then he picked up on the menu the Parisian city and pressed on race number 5, which was located on the highway all around Paris. „Alright, I‘ll take a red golf cart, “ Adrien said exchanging the white color to red, then pressed the X button on his controller and Raiden picked the same vehicle and added the dark blue color.
„Hehe good luck man“ Raiden wished making Adrien chuckle.
„Same to you“
At the entrance of the bedroom entered Kagami carrying her barrel bag and she walked into the room dropping the bag on Adrien‘s bag, then walked down at the two men to greet them.
„Hey guys“ Kagami spoke while they laughed, then they looked up at the blue-haired woman and smiled.
„Hey Kagami“ Both greeted at the same time, then she gazed at the TV to see the game load.
„How was your day at work?“ Adrien asked.
„The same as usual“ Kagami answered. „How about you two? I never have seen you two getting so well along“ „Yeah“ Adrien agreed. „We really getting along pretty good“
„We just needed more time to get to know each other to get along,“ Raiden mentioned. „And I think that‘s what the problem was“
„Yes, besides you and Adrien already had this strange tension with each other since the first day you two saw each other in the match“ Kagami reminded the two men.
„Maybe it was because I won on that day“ Raiden hinted making Adrien frown.
„But you had cheated on that day,“ Adrien enunciated. „Even Kagami saw it“
„Yes I admit it, I did that and I know I didn‘t deserve it, but that‘s in the past and now you defeated me this time and I didn‘t even cheat. On that time you lost I was angry at your scenes and how all idolized you, that I needed to get you off my sight and took that one chance to trick you“
„Yes“ Adrien replied. „I feel like if you didn‘t defeat me on that point, we would probably have already gotten along with each other in the end….erm eventually“
„Who knows, but I‘m glad, that you two are now friends,“ The Japanese woman confessed placing her hands on the shoulder of the two men.
„We need to seal this bond with something, maybe a beer?“ Raiden suggested.
„We don‘t have beer, but any type of food or water“ Adrien suggested.
„Food would be fine“ Raiden answered.
„Do you know, what I have appetite on?“ Kagami asked making the two shrug the shoulders. „Nachos“
„Nachos?“ Adrien asked surprised.
„I really don‘t know it why I want to eat it so bad“ Kagami mentioned making Adrien chuckle softly.
„Well, I believe the kitchen chef can arrange it, “ Adrien said picking up his smartphone to call the chef inside their house.
„I‘m going to take a shower first, see you two later“ Kagami wished giving Adrien a short peck on his cheek and went to the bathroom locking the door behind her.
„I don‘t know her as someone very fond of food or is it because she hasn‘t eaten enough today?“
„Maybe she hasn‘t eaten a lot“ Adrien answered. „I‘ve noticed, that she seems to eat more than she usually did“
„Okay“
„Is that bad too?“ Adrien asked.
„No I‘m just curious,“
„I don‘t know it, maybe she‘s stressed with the school, the work and all that“
„Yes maybe“ Raiden answered looking at the screen to see their cars standing on the road with the timer already counting. „Hey...I‘ve watched a few interviews of the superheroes and that one superhero…..Cat Noir I think was his name. It‘s kind of weird, but he kind of resembles you a lot“
„Oh…..yeah…..uh….I‘ve heard that a lot“ Adrien coughed at the sentence of the man. „I don‘t know, but many of my friends think that, but this must be a pure coincidence,“
„It‘s funny, cause your voice and his are quite alike“
„Yes, that‘s what my friends told me too, but I‘m not him like….I barely would have time to protect the city since I already have to go to school, work, study, sleep, eat and be around friends,“
„Sure, but I haven‘t seen Cat Noir or the others since my arrival here“
„Well since Hawk Moth and Le Paon got defeated, the heroes don‘t appear a lot during the day or the night, only…...sometimes….They were yesterday at the Grand Paris as you probably saw in the news“
„Yes, they were“ Raiden agreed watching Adrien look at the screen of the TV looking at the friend.
„Come, let‘s finish this race like we planned to“ Adrien suggested earning a nod from the raven-haired man and both pressed the square button to drive with their vehicles backward.
Lila and Nathaniel were at the house of Marinette‘s family sitting on the couch together with Marinette and her mother, which showed the younger couple with a pink-colored tablet a picture of a baby crib.
„This is my favorite blue shade of the bed“ Marinette mentioned. „Egyptian Blue“
„That‘s actually Persian Blue“ Nathaniel corrected the blue-haired woman, which frowned annoyed at Nathaniel‘s comment.
„How can you see the difference?“
„I‘ve been dealing with colors my whole life“ Nathaniel answered. „Sorry, I didn‘t mean to sound rude“
„Sorry, I didn‘t want to sound stupid,“ Marinette mentioned. „How is your pregnancy going Lila?“
„Fine“ Lila answered. „We have in a few weeks our next appointment and we might find out the gender of our baby“
„It would be great if you had a girl“ Marinette mentioned. „I and Myléne are at the moment the only ones with a boy“
„Who knows, maybe we‘re lucky“ Lila mentioned.
„Or we get a boy?“ Nathaniel mentioned. „Could happen“
„Yeah that too“
„I would be fine with a girl, I wouldn‘t have to explain to her anything about girl things and all. That‘s too complicated for me…..and I think for me or her it would be too awkward“
„Eh I think my father explaining me period and all that stuff would be weird too“
„I know, what you mean“ Marinette agreed.
„Your dad did you that?“ Nathaniel asked surprised.
„No, but he did weird things once as I pretended to be dating Cat Noir, so I wouldn‘t blow up my cover as Ladybug“
„Weird“ Nathaniel replied. „My mom just let the school take care of it. And Luka in some aspects,“
„That explains a lot Nathy“ Lila flirted with the husband, which shook his head.
„Nope that was me all by myself, okay?“
„Okay it‘s starting to get weird guys“ Marinette mentioned a little embarrassed, then the two nodded.
„Sure, uhm how‘s Alya doing?“ Lila asked. „I‘ve heard about her mother“
„She‘s fine and her mom is recuperating“ Marinette answered. „She‘s doing well at the university. Nino‘s still working at the radio and is alright too“
„Great“ Lila responded.
„I like listening to the songs Nino plays. At least it‘s not repetitive“ Nathaniel added earning a nod from the half-Chinese woman.
„He had suggested months ago to make more playlists and rearrange the order every time the songs get played. It started to bore him, every time listening to the start of the work Happy, which he felt made him and other people depressed,“ Marinette explained. „You know how annoying it is to listen to Baby at 4 am?“
„For me, that is any time of the day“ Nathaniel confessed making Lila laugh loud.
„Ahhahahahaha. That‘s so funny“ „Yeah, I know“ Marinette agreed laughing just like Lila making Nathaniel tilt his head in confusion.
„The mood swings are so weird lately“ Nathaniel mentioned making Sabine shrug her arms.
„How are Adrien and his girlfriend doing?“ Sabine asked making Nathaniel shrug his shoulders.
„I don‘t know“ Nathaniel answered. „I think good“
„I saw Adrien yesterday at the farm with other people collecting the grass for the farmers. How long is he still going to do that?“ Marinette asked.
„I think three weeks?“ Lila answered. „The rest of the year isn‘t going well for them“
„Is there more going on with the two?“ Marinette asked interested about the comment of the brunette.
„Kagami wants to talk with Adrien about something, but she is afraid, how he will react“
„Is it that bad?“ Marinette asked making Lila shake her head.
„Not very bad, but let‘s just say…..bad timing“
„Is it possible, that she‘s pregnant?“ Marinette asked making Lila wide her eyes in surprise at her guess.
„How did you know?“ Lila asked the blue-haired woman.
„I‘ve got a card of Kagami‘s menstruation cycle and know exactly when she was going to make this mistake?“
„I can‘t believe it. You‘re insane Marinette. Even as an adult?“
„Ahahahaha“ Marinette began to laugh confusing Lila for a bit, then she groaned as she figured out she was just joking. „I‘m just kidding. I have no idea about anything, that was just a lucky guess“
„I actually believed this with the card cycle thing“ Nathaniel confessed passing his hand behind his neck.
„But why doesn‘t she want to tell it, Adrien?“ Marinette asked. „Isn‘t the baby his?“
„Yes it is, just she doesn‘t know, how she should tell him that as they‘re both in school….Well I don‘t know if she already told him about it, but I think she hasn‘t done it yet“
„Okay and haven‘t you two talked together since the last time?“
„No“ Lila answered. „Pressure is the last thing she needs“
„But isn‘t school or the work already doing it?“ Nathaniel pointed out.
„She‘s been managing the school-work-life balance very well, since Adrien and I are more present around her life and her mother also has been less strict than she always was before“ Lila explained. „That‘s a good thing that changed on her,“
„Yeah and without her and Nathaniel your…...uhm…..you know…..lying habit has also changed“
„Not to 100% thought“ Lila admitted. „But hey this is quite useful during acts, cause it makes it more believable for me and the audience“
The kitchen bell rang and Marinette looked back along with the mother to see in the over a plate full of cookies, then Marinette got up and walked into the kitchen.
„I‘ll be right back and don‘t worry, the cookies will be fine to eat after five minutes, “ Marinette said earning a nod from Lila and Nathaniel, which licked his lips feeling hungry about the fresh-made cookies.

Chapter 25: Itati the Brave
The Sports Festival happens, now the agents get their fun! The list of supplies gets handed out and we get into survival studies so we all pull through without causalities. Monoma and I cut our training to only once a week now that he’s gotten the hang of extending his copies and developing techniques. But that hasn’t stopped our bedroom sessions from being whenever we want each other.
-Thursday in the Halls with Mimi and Jin-
“Did y’all hear what happened at lunch?!” Mimi gasped like it was news of the century.
“What’s the tea sis?” I say as I’m hovering a very sleep deprived Jin above our heads.
“Yuka broke up with Tetsu!”
“NO WAY?!” Jin and I gasped.
“YES WAY!” she responded in equal exaggeration “she was peeved that he’s too much of a pussy to step up to get more intimate with her” she was remembering what she saw “they were in the work room I was in, but I was in the rafters to get the bird that flew in the morning. They rushed in, kissing really rough, when Yuka tried to go down on him and he said no. She then asked him if he wanted to do anything aside from kissing and he said that he was scared. Yuka then started to do that thing where she stops breathing to make a quick decision. The bitch fuckin yells she’s been horny since the party because she stopped sleeping with the weed man to be with him.”
“I knew they were sleeping!” I wasn’t surprised about that now confirmed fact “nobody gets weed from agent 420 without proper payment of yen or pussy.”
“What made matters worse is that metal man was feeling inadequate and cried that he loved her and was trying to be a better man for her” she crossed her arms and sighed tiredly “Yuka backhanded him and stormed out of the room saying that it was over, leaving him to cry. Which made things very awkward when I had to get down from the rafters at some point to go release the bird outside.”
“Oh no! Poor dude” I think about the places he might be after school “I’ll talk to him about it later but dang, didn’t think Yuka would be that like that. It’s been what, almost 3 months? That’s alot of time to abstain from sex.”
Fast forward to after school, I walk to the school patio to see if Tetsutetsu was there with Shinso. I always saw them together after school by the stone tables on certain days, maybe I’d see them there today. I saw Shinso talking to a tree and my mind didn’t know how to interpret the sight.
“Please? You have to tell me what’s the matter” Shinso coaxed at the tree “I promise I won’t judge you if you tell me!”
“Shinso?” I asked, startling him “sorry to give you a scare, but who are you talking too? All I see is the tree.”
“Oh uhh hehe” he gets self-aware of his surroundings “Tetsu is up in the tree sobbing and he won’t tell me what’s wrong.”
“Oh! I was just looking for him” I got closer and saw that he was hidden in the leafy branches of the tree “I know why and I’m here to talk to him about it.”
“I don’t want to” spoke Tetsutetsu between sobs “today is the worst and I just want to hide!”
“Well, whether you want to or not” I start to climb the tree “I’m coming up there to make you feel a bit better.”
“I’m coming up too” Shinso follows after me “I want to know.”
“Hey bud, so Mimi told me what happened” I popped my head near where he was perched “it was fucked up of Yuka to just blow up on you like that” I helped Shinso up on a branch “intimacy can get a bit scary, especially sex, Yuka stopping having it since you guys started going steady! She cares about you to be committed to you but having those pent up urges does make you lose it.”
“Has that ever happened to you?” asked Shinso.
“Umm well, I’ve never gone that far but I see this type of thing in others all the time.” I did not want these boys to know about my sessions at all.
“Tetsu, you’re crying over your girl?” Shinso put everything together “sorry that happened bro, what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know! I’ve fallen in deep with her bro” he said between sobs “I want to win her back and show that I’m a man worth her time but needs to be in the right mind to do that sort of thing.”
“I have a plan” I spoke up “we have a party on saturday, just announced by Hansai like an hour ago. I can use my plus one on you to come in and make up with Yuka, knowing her, she can easily avoid you at school but she really can’t at one of our parties.”
“I want to come too” Shinso butted in “for moral support and so he doesn’t get all teary with everyone watching when things go down.”
“Hmmm, I didn’t count on that factor” I thought about how I was going to include Shinso in “Oh! I’ll ask Jin to use his plus one on you, he never invites anybody from outside the program and he’s the bouncer of our parties.”
“Bro, you’re gonna be in for the wildest night of your young life” Tetsu said without sobbing “those agent kids don’t mess around with their liquor or competitive drinking! I woke up with my shirt up my ass at the first party I went.”
“Hehehe yea he did” I giggled as I pulled up the picture to show Shinso “Yuka took the picture, apparently he made a bet that if he makes this last shot on a game of beer pong he was going to kiss Yuka but if he doesn’t he was going to shove his shirt up his ass. Guess what happened.”
“Oh my God, really dude?” Shinso looked horrified at the picture “now I’m scared.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll tell you whats good and what to avoid” I pat Shinso on the back “I realize that y’all are party babies and need some help.” I pull up the mass text with the details “Okay so it’s this Saturday at the 2nd year dorms, doors open at 7pm, all rules apply.” I turn to the boys “You got that fellas?”
“I’ll fill you in on the house rules but we got it” Tetsu turned to Shinso to confirm.
“Great! I’ll be zooting outta here now” I put my phone in my bag “see you boys then!” I teleport out and kept the details to myself until the day of the party.
-Morning of the party, at the mall with Jin and Mimi-
“Do you think Yuka and the others are handling things alright?” I asked worried as I checked the time “it’s 3 hours til and we haven’t been contacted about anything.”
Jin tosses his final item into his cart “I’m sure they’re fine” he checks the list for any missed items “it’s not their first time handling things.”
Mimi tries on some hiking boots “No, babygirl has a point” she stands to do a test walk in the boots “remember when we were gone for the take down practice test and they couldn’t handle us being gone for 2 days?” she stumbles a bit “everything was a disaster! Why don’t we shoot a text to see if they need us to pick up anything?”
I sent the text and we didn’t get a reply, it gave all of us anxiety and we rushed our supply shopping to go back. When we got back, things were on the brink of going wrong so we helped with that. Everything was done an hour before people started to arrive and that gave me time to get pretty. And like clockwork, everyone came right on the dot. Once the boys came, it was go time with the plan.
“...Ok Tetsu, remember, you go up to her THEN you yell ‘you just got ICED!’, now go!” I say as I hand him the bottle and point to Yuka across the room.
Shinso sees him walk to Yuka “So this a dorm party huh?”
“Psh it’s just intel that has these parties” I scoff as a mix him a drink “If you think the hero dorms are like this, sorry to say but y’all can’t do shit.”
“Is that why you ran wild all the time?” he glances back to me “I’ve heard from the others of your little adventures.”
“Yea, I have more liberties than the hero program” I hand him the drink “thankfully everything is where it should be now but living with those kids was such a pain in the ass.”
He takes the drink from my hand “Really? Now I’m not looking forward to moving in during the summer” he takes a sip and almost spits it back in the cup “oh Tetsu wasn’t kidding, it does taste like burning!”
“Oh you’re moving in! That means you’re gonna take my old room!” I get giddy “lucky you! it’s the biggest room on the boys side.”
“Oh yea? Well, hows class with those kids? I’m getting incorporated in 2nd term.”
“Oof, it’s alright but maybe it won’t be as bad” I pause to get Shinso a napkin “I’m also coming in 2nd term for the communications and strategy class.”
“Oh that’s cool” he wipes his chin and takes another sip “I guess we’ll be seeing each other more often then just in passing and training.”
“Yup! and I can’t wait!” I open a beer “I’ve heard about the off site simulation training we’re going to do and I’m stoked to take part!”
Meanwhile, In the hero dorms...
“Anything interesting happening?” Mineta asked Kaminari that was hogging the binoculars.
“Nothing yet- WAIT! Oh man Iida-kun is going to flip!”
“WHAT?! What did you see!” Mineta screamed trying to grab the binoculars to take a look.
“Palma-san is getting a little too social with Shinso” Kaminari gives the binoculars back “please tell me he’s still awake!”
“It’s almost 10pm, I doubt it” Mineta looks at the clock then at the party “don’t you find it weird that the only time anybody in the hero program is let in those parties is because they’re associated with Palma-san?”
Aoyama perks up from the couch “Don’t you know? Those parties are invite only, everyone in her class has an admit one guest” he strikes a pose “that means that Shinso begged her to let him in this party.”
Mineta and Kaminari put two and two together “ALL THIS TIME WE COULD’VE GONE TO ONE IF WE ASKED TO BE HER PLUS ONE?!”
Kaminari remembered the school dance events and the morning after “So that means that Iida-kun wasn’t formally invited to that after party, he begged her or included himself” he thought some more “then he went, got drunk with her until who-knows-when and they ended up in the situation in the morning after.”
“What are you trying to say?” asked Mineta, still confused.
“I’m saying that Iida-kun is the coolest guy in our class! He partied until he literally passed out and had a girl take care of him AND the same girl always invites him first to these parties!” he then got a bit hysterical “making us dumb, lame party virgins!”
-Fast foward: Thursday Night, gearing up for the camping trip-
“Uh oh sisters” I exclaimed in a semi-panicky tone.
“Whats wrong?” Jin asked.
“We’re missing a large lantern ” I said as I pointed on the list “we have the oil and the emergency back up but not a the lantern.”
“Ah frick now what?” Hansai thought for a bit “any of you know who might have one? All the shops are closed and we won’t be able to go buy one in the morning.”
“I’ll call my brother” Yuka said dialing on her phone.
“I’ll go pop in the hero dorms and see if anyone has one” I check the time “it’s 6:40, dinner just finished for them, I’ll be back.” I teleport to the commons room and I saw that I popped in the middle of a stressful study session “Um sorry to disrupt yall but do any of yall have a large lantern for camping?”
“What do you have to exchange for it?” Kirishima mocked my line when I would barter my illegal dorm goods.
“I have 1,500 yen, help with your english or strategy homework, a discount at my dorm goods store, this coil hair tie, a tiddie flash and a mystery hand touch.”
“Whats that last thing you said? Mystery hand touch?” asked Tokoyami.
“It’s when I touch a part of your body for 5 seconds, no limitations” I explain as a wiggle my fingers.
“I HAVE ONE!” Iida and Midoriya stood up at the same time.
“I’ll just lend it to you for no charge!” Iida said while doing his air chops “please don’t put up odd services for things you need.”
“I’ll give it to you for 500 yen, the discount and the hand touch” Midoriya put up his offer “I want a back rub, I had a bad day.”
“Aww poor baby! Sure thing” I said has I counted out the money and a pink sticky note for the discount “I’ll extend that back rub for 10 seconds.”
He comes out with the lantern, showed me how it worked and sat on the couch for the back rub “mind if I cry a little too?”
“Let it all out” I said as I started rubbing his back, slowly counting to 10 in my head. Once the 10 seconds was up I asked in a soft tone “feel better Izu?”
“Yeah, Thank you for popping in” he said wiping his tears “what did you want the lantern for anyways?”
“Oh I’m going on my survival camp trip with my class” I stood up “We’re leaving tomorrow at twelve and come back next week friday.”
“So while you go camping, we’re stuck here doing midterms?!” exclaimed Sero “you intel kids have all the fun.”
“Not really, we’re competing with other intel programs to see who’s top dog” I stretch my back “so there’s a chance that some of us won’t make it, there’s bears and shit plus we have to work as a team to raid this cabin and we have to be ready for anything.”
“That still sounds like more fun than what we’re doing” Aoyama pouted.
“Before you go Ita” Iida walked toward me “let me hug you goodbye.” He gives me those gentle but comforting hugs “be careful, beat those other schools and stay together with your team.”
“Aww you’re gonna miss me?” I broke the hug “don’t worry, I know we’ll pull through this one” I put my hand on his cheek “I’ll come back, I promise.” Before he could do anything, I teleported off with the lantern.
The boys looked at Iida suggestively. “I’ll come back! I promise” some of them mocked with kissy noises.
“It’s not like that, cut it out!” Iida fixed his glasses as he glared at the boys.
In the morning, intel set off to their survival camp about 3 hours away from the dorms. The hype was real until we got there and the other groups looked like something out of Mad Max.
“Oh my fucking Gawd” squeaked a B class student “we’re gonna die die!”
“Shut up Tokka-san!” groaned her friend “we gotta do it for Zippy!”
We unload our stuff and get the announcement to line up at our designated spots for a map and instructional radio for daily updates and emergency contact. We started strong until nightfall, Hansai was going to stay up to fend off any attackers or bears while we slept. It backfired as we got ambushed, 2 nights in a row, taking things like blankets and some rations. On the 3rd night I put it upon myself to stay up for the rest of the remaining time, no sleep. With the skills my dad taught me to survive, I managed to keep everyone safe at night. On the 5th day is when some of us were losing it a bit.
“LOOK! APPLES!” Jin screamed like he found treasure “we’re gonna live!” he ran up to the tree to pick the fruit, tears in his eyes.
“Wait, if we check map.....yup! the river is just a quarter mile east!” Yuka exclaimed then turned to Mimi “can you climb up and confirm for us?”
Mimi nods and climbs up one of the apple trees and looks all directions “Okay some good and bad news” she yelled “good news, the river is in fact a quarter mile east” she turns and points behind us “bad news, we got to keep an eye out for 2 groups that are a bit too close for comfort.”
“We have to cross the river before settling down for the night” I spoke up “if I’m not mistaken, we have 4 hours of daylight left, rivers are prime water ambush zones.”
“Then lets keep moving team!” Hansai points east “stay close, it’s bear and deer territory, watch out for traps.”
We get to the river after an hour and we stop dead in our tracks, there was a fucking bear near the edge.
“Aw fuck, now what?” whispered Yuka “Oleshin, any ideas?”
“I’ve never seen a bear before in my life!” Mimi whispered harshly with some panic “and thats one big bitch!”
“I got this yall” I said as I put on my rancho hat “my dad always said the key to approaching wild animals is to talk to them like a neighbor” I get a few apples from my bag and put them in my coat pockets before walking up to the bear.
“Well, there goes our only hope of surviving this shit” sighed a B class student.
“Hola osito! Que pasa?!” I casually say to the bear to get it’s attention “nice day for fishing huh?” the bear turned and whimpered as it was stuck in a bear trap “Ay mira! easy there big guy” I carefully approached to break open the trap “look what I have for you, some nice and juicy apples” I rolled an apple to the bear to gain it’s trust and they ate it in desperation “pobresito, you’re starving, not for long though” I pry the trap open just enough for the bear to get it’s paw out and gave it another 2 apples. The bear then licks my hand starts to muzzle into my arm, like a dog. “Oh my, aren’t you a sweetie?!” I then motion everyone that it was safe to approach.
“Palma, you crazy American bitch!” Hansai sighed in disbelief at the sight of the bear eating an apple out of my hand “you tamed a fuckin bear, in Spanish! I must be dreaming.”
Everyone held out an apple for the bear to gain it’s trust and the bear was licking and sniffing us like a big dog. As we tried to cross the river, the bear followed us like it was trying to return the favor by protecting us. We let the bear sleep near us when we set up camp for the night. And followed us in the morning.
“MORNING UPDATES: 2 MORE TEAMS HAVE FORFEITED DUE TO ILLNESS, LEAVING 4 SCHOOLS STILL IN THE RUN. REPORTS OF A SCHOOL THAT TAMED A WILD BEAR AND IS USING IT AS GUARD AND ATTACK, NAME OF THE SCHOOL IS UNKNOWN DUE TO LIMITED INFORMATION. WEATHER REPORT OF CLOUDY SKIES WITH 15 PERCENT CHANCE OF LIGHT RAIN.”
“Oh wow, word got out fast about big boy” Jin said as he tossed a salmon tail to the bear “how many groups tried to attack us last night?”
I rubbed my eyes “2 groups but they didn’t get close enough for a fight, big boy shoo’d them away.”
“It’s day 6 Palma-san” Yuka spoke with concern “are you sure you don’t want to rest? we can carry you as you sleep.”
“I’ll be fine” I took a sip of water “we can’t afford to waste man power on comforts” I peer over the map and point to the objective area “we are about 3 more miles until the suit up point, by then it will be nightfall and we’d be forced to stop anyways” I stretch my arms and stifle a yawn “if everything goes mostly right and nobody gets injured, that’ll be my rest.”
“I volunteer as guard for tonight” Jin stood up to stretch “we need you rested and alert for the ambush, you’re our wildcard.”
We trudge along these 3 miles just as scheduled and I was allowed my rest. I woke up in the morning, ready for whatever.
“MORNING UPDATES: 4 SCHOOLS STILL REMAIN AND ALL 4 HAVE CHECKED IN AT THE SUIT UP POINT AS OF THIS MORNING. IT’S THE FINAL DAY, ALL CAMPING GEAR IS TO BE SURRENDERED IN THE MARKED STORAGE BIN WITH YOUR SCHOOL’S NAME ON THE SIDE FOR SAFE KEEPING.”
“Okay listen up team” Hansai stood up on a rock to overlook us “from this point on, all command is to be switched over to our big 3 here” he motioned over to Jin, Mimi and me “they have the most experience with these types of mass ambush and strategy, I will be following behind the group to make sure nobody falls behind.”
“I won’t be of much use as the forest here is thick with little visibility” Mimi stated “but lets hype up team! Do it for Zippy!”
Everyone was gassing up to get on with the final leg of the forest. A student from B class spoke up “I know this seems a bit extra but I made this rope harness for Big Boy” they held up their creation “its so we can ride on his back with comfort.”
“Innovative! Lets suit up Big Boy too!” I gasped and got excited “he’s a battle bear now.” We put the harness on the bear and he lets me on his back “Everyone armed?” everyone nods “get in position, and lets head out.”
We got through the forest with little incident and made it to the cabin by sundown.
“Stop!” Mimi commanded “one of the schools has infiltrated the cabin already.”
“Aw frick, now what?” I pondered “do we just wait it out?”
“It’s best” Jin spoke up as he was listening to the radio through the headset “I changed the frequency so I can tap in the other’s ear piece systems” he sighed “things aren’t going so well on their end, we have to wait for the other school to do their thing and see our next moves from there.”
We waited out and the other school couldn’t even make it in the cabin before getting struck down by the enemy.
“Jin, are you thinking what I’m thinking?” I turned to Jin with raised eyebrows.
“Yes and I hate that you’re right” he rubbed his temples stressfully, then faced the rest of the group “Okay we need a sniper team, ground control team and a raid team. New goal, since there’s 5 people in the cabin and one hostage to retrieve, the raid team goes in and warps them out of the cabin and the hostage to the safe zone. Ground team detains the enemy as they get warped out and sniper team fires at will as back up leaving Big Boy as our last ditch savior.”
Everyone gets in position, raid team being myself, Jin and Hansai. We bust in and get wary that there was nobody in the living room nor the kitchen.
“I have a bad feeling that they have a trick up their sleeve” I spoke up “coming in was too easy and I can’t detect any noises” I turn to the other 2 “Hansai, can you use your quirk to see if you can detect the enemy and hostage? Jin, alert the sniper team to be on lock.”
“You’re going to hate this” Hansai chirps “there’s 7 people and 2 hostages, plus there’s 2 more levels to this long cabin.”
“Fuck” I said softly, then recouped “okay, any nearby?”
“Yes, in the bedroom and the door to the other level is there too.”
“Lets smoke them out boys” I cocked my gun and signaled them to follow suit. We opened the door to the bedroom and before the 2 people had the chance to do anything, Jin portaled them outside for our ground team to detain. Same thing when we raided the basement.
“We found the hostages” Jin pinged me as I was searching for the last person on the enemy side on the level below the basement “I’m going to portal them and Hansai just outside the sniper ring, near the safe zone.”
“Great job, see you on the upper level” I responded. As I did a quick sweep of the level, I found nothing. I pinged Jin to give the clearing “basement 2 is clear, how’s the ground level?” No response “Jin? Status report.” Still no response, I get on high alert “All teams on code white, Jin is not responding to my pings.”
“All snipers are at your will Palma, find our boy.” calmly said Mimi.
I teleport up to the bedroom and kick every door open to find him and in the main room was my worst fear. The last member of the enemy group had Jin in a chokehold with a gun to his head.
I put my gun up but before I could do anything, the man speaks “Don’t shoot or he gets it!” he presses the gun up to Jin’s temple.
“Don’t do it babygirl” Jin weakly croaked “he has an energy drain quirk.”
“And with every passing moment, I drain more of his energy” he explained “so, drop the gun and he’ll live OR shoot me and your boy here won’t live to see the sun!”
I think fast and point my gun to my head “What will I get if I shoot myself?”
The man stops his act in confusion “Wait, what?”
“You heard me” I cock the gun and press it up to my ear to switch on my earpiece “I said what will happen if I shoot myself? I’m talkin blasting my brains out, will you let him go?”
The man lowers the gun and thinks about my offer but by then its too late, a hail of round rubber bullets come down from the high windows and strike the man down and releasing Jin. I net the man and I teleport him out first before carrying Jin’s weakened body out. As I give the all clear, the radio wails
“CONGRATULATIONS TO UA INTEL ON COMPLETING THE OBJECTIVE, THUS CONCLUDING THIS YEAR’S SURVIVAL CAMP! PLEASE REPORT TO THE SAFE ZONE IMMEDIATELY.”
We make our way to the safe zone, Jin’s limp body on the bear’s back and all. Upon arrival, we see Hansai and the other schools that were still in the race with us.
“Holy shit, UA were the bear tamers?!” Were some of the things the other schools said when we came strolling in with the bear in a rope harness. The people that hosted the camp trial came out to show everyone the ranking, since we completed the camp and objective, we ranked top and everyone else trickled down the list. Diya sensei came out after and he froze in his place.
“I leave you kids alone in the wilderness for a week” he motions over to the bear “and you come back with a fucking bear? What is with you kids and taming wild animals?!”
“To be fair” Mimi spoke up “Palma rescued him and it just started to follow us and obey.”
“Sorry?!” I half-heartly apologized as I fed the bear an apple “Also, Jin need som milk.”
“Him and the other guys” Diya’s tone changed to more impressed then stressed “the man you sniped, oof, he got air lifted to a hospital because he got a few broken bones.”
We all cringed at the idea, Jin got some medical attention to regain some of his energy. We took a group picture with the bear and started to load the bus for the journey back to the dorms. The bear wanted to board the bus with us after we took off the harness but we had to say our good byes.
“Sorry Big Boy, you can’t come with us” I comforted the bear “thank you for your brave service to us.”
“Thank you gentle creature” Mimi pat his back “I hope you help another group in need of your loyalty.”
Jin walks up to the bear and hugs him “I’ll never forget you, go hit that bear pussy, Zippy would’ve wanted it that way.” He gave the bear the rest of his apples and boarded the bus with the rest of us.
On our journey back to the dorms, we figure our how the hell we’re going to tell everyone we tamed a bear without making it sound dramatic. Upon arriving, B class’s parents were there to take them home and our classmates from the other levels were there to greet us back. None of us were in the mood to celebrate, we were stinky and hungry plus I felt the early symptoms of a head cold. We soaked in the bath, ate whatever we didn’t need to cook as long as we ate something and passed out. The next day, like I predicted, I got sick and so did a few others including Jin.
“Hey uhhhhh, you good for visitors?” asked Mimi while I was sitting on the couch, watching a cooking show.
“Depends, who’s a-knockin’ and askin’?”
“Monoma, and he brought flowers”
“Oh shit, yeah bring him in” I perked up and blew my nose.
He walked in and saw that I was loungewear and wasn’t looking too well. “Oh my, you really do look like you survived a week in the wilderness!” he put his hand on my arm to copy my quirk “I’ll take good care of you” he floated me to my room and everyone got the hint that he was going to do more than nurse me back to health. He situated me on my bed and put the flowers on my desk “How I’ve missed you darling” he tried to kiss me but I pulled away.
“Don’t, I don’t want to get you sick too.”
“Oh, I then I’ll kiss you here” he kissed my neck and other parts of my body “you missed my touch? my kiss?” he said between kisses “lay back, relax” he took off his shirt and fixed my pillows for me to lay down comfortably “I want to please my master after a long and victorious journey.” I consented and let him please me.
“Oh Neito, you’re so sweet and obedient like a servant when we’re alone” I moaned in the middle of passion “what would the others think?”
He looks up at me and looms over me “They’d never believe us” he mounted me “they’ll never believe me if I told them how sickly sweet you body feels when I enter it’s heavenly gates” he shudders in pleasure as he does so “and they’ll never believe you if you told them I get on my knees for you or that I please your body whenever you ask me to” he grunts as he finds his rhythm and I lose my breath.
-Fast forward, Monday in homeroom-
“Hey Hey! It’s video announcements from Present Mic! Before we get to our school wide announcements, a big congratulations to our intel second years for not only completing this year’s survival camp challenge but also coming out on top of the ranking! YEAAAAH! Here’s a highlight reel of their week in the wilderness...”
“Oh geez they kept in the part where Mimi shot that west side kid’s ass for stealing our rations” I cringed as the kid screamed for death.
“Oh shit look! They captured the part where Palma-san rescued the bear!” Yuka jumped in her seat as the part where the bear muzzled me came up “AH! they even got GoPro shots of the bear attacking that loin cloth group after they tried to spear us!”
“Well I’ll be damned” Diya looked in shock at the footage “you really did that rescue shit and it devoted it’s life to you.”
“...you saw that correctly folks! A bear aided our students in their challenge, all thanks to the kind-hearted and brave efforts of 2nd year, and intel Big 3 contender, Itati Palma! If you see her around, praise her for being very Plus Ultra to a creature in need. Now on to other school news...”
I turned red in embarrassment as I knew I was going to get all this unwanted attention as I go to my other classes and lunch. And as predicted, there was whispers as I walked the halls and a few people did give me approving looks and words.
“Look who’s here! Bear rescuer Palma!” Mic announced as I walked in the english class to assist “You have to tell me and the audience how you did it!”
“Well, my dad taught me everything about survival and living alongside animals” I overlooked the room and saw that everyone was attentive “he said to me, Itati, the key to approaching an animal is to talk to them like they’re a neighbor. Give them a casual greeting and a compliment on the weather and the rest will follow suite.”
“Was your father an animal rescuer?” Kendo asked naively to what I was going to say next.
“Ha, nope, he was raised on a farm and thought he was a real buckeroo” I responded in a rough rancho accent “rode horses and bulls and shit, he’s also an avid meat eater and so am I” I giggled “so if that bear didn’t pull through, I would’ve eaten it, made a nice bear pelt coat and brought it home. My dad taught me how to do all that too.”
“Oh my god why would your father teach you all those barbaric things?” shrieked Shiozaki.
“That’s how he shows his love for his children” I get nostalgic “by teaching them very valuable skills in case of survival, so really, I have to thank him for teaching me so much to shape me into the confident and reliable person you see before you.”
The rest of that class was tense after that but the rest of my day went better. I did my little jazz band practice for Mic, Midnight and Aizawa for the last hour of school. “Loved the set today Miss Palma” Aizawa spoke up after our last song “not to bring up school work but can you help out your fellow classmates.”
“Um sure” I hopped down to sit on the edge of the stage “what can I help you with?”
“Well, as you know, for the class you’re taking with us” he started off fine “it’s first term strategy and second communications but” he sighed stressfully “strategy is really kicking them in the ass, something isn’t clicking with them.”
“Is it that bad?” I didn’t believe it was as he was making it sound like “what’s the average on the last exam?”
“70 percent, Midoriya and Bakugo are the ones keeping it that high but even they’re struggling”
“Oof, that’s sad” I think a bit and come up with a solution “I have a fun little thing that’ll get things clicking, what’s the P.E. schedule for this week?”

Hi readers, hope your having a super awesome day! I have enjoyed OBSESSING over The Ending Series so much, and who’d of thought just a little tag in a fan art piece, by yours truly, started the on going blog posts and art work. Not forgetting how amazing team Lindsey has been…. hopefully I didn’t get on their nerves to much with the constant tags 😊 I have loved every second of it, and The Ending Series will always have a place in my heart and on my TOP shelf!
I was invited to join a VIP reader group, and I was over the moon! Lindsey Pogue has been great, we have spoken over social media which I then asked if I could do a feature Author Interview for my blog and they said yes!!
I seriously can’t get enough of this series!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Anyway that’s enough about me let’s meet the Authors to this AMAZING series……
The Ending Series- Question time 😉
1. I’m an emotional wreck when reading and quite often find my eyes blurring with stray tears….the ending series got me good! Real good!! What was the first book that made you cry?
LP: I honestly can’t remember the first book that made me cry, but I can tell you that I cry a lot. I even cry while I’m writing gut-wrenching parts of a story or while I’m watching sappy commercials. When I read Me Before You, I got teary-eyed, but when I watched the movie, knowing what would happen, I bawled my eyes out.
LF: It’s so amazing when we hear that our books create a strong emotional reaction in readers, especially because we had strong emotional connections to the characters as we were writing their stories. I usually have a moment or two during each project where I tear up during the first draft phase, and it’s no different for me when I’m reading other people’s books. The last one to make me cry was the beta version of Sarah Lyons Fleming’s Peripeteia, but the first book to make me cry…hmmmm. I’m certain that plenty of books made me cry when I was younger, but the first book I can vividly remember crying while reading was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I was in tenth grade, I think, and I was outright ugly crying during that scene in the Department of Mysteries when Sirius, well, you know…
2. I can feel rather overwhelmed when my creativity is flowing and sometimes writing really does exhaust me, so I’d love to know… Does writing energise you or exhaust you?
LP: I think it depends on where I’m at in the writing process. If I have a deadline, it’s exhausting because I can’t let my mind rest. If I’m chilling and flowing with a glass of bubbles, lovin’ life, it’s energizing and I don’t want to stop.
LF: Both! I definitely reach a done point during days when I’m writing for the full day, and if I’ve been pushing out books back-to-back, I generally need to take a loooong break (think, vacation) after the second or third book. That being said, during each project, I seem to reach a point where the story is snowballing, and I can’t seem to get it out quickly enough. It’s all I can think about. It’s in my dreams. I don’t want to watch or read anything. I don’t want to see people. I become obsessed with the story, and that feeling is intoxicating.
3. I personally love series! Particularly The Ending Series hehe, and love delving deep into the characters lives…. Do you prefer to read series or stand-alone? And why? LP: Generally, I like a good series. I feel like you can get to know characters so much more and it’s satisfying to be able to hold on to them a bit longer than a standalone allows (Pride and Prejudice, for example). BUT, I read standalones just as much and bear them no ill-will. Haha.
LF: I have a strong preference for series, especially long series. I love it when the characters start to feel like real people to me, and that usually doesn’t happen after just a single book—at least, not for me.
4. We all know mine! 😉 Do you have a favourite book/series? LP: I wish I read more for pleasure these days, but I haven’t been reading as much as I used to. I’m lucky if I get in my book club book in a month (sad, I know). I do a lot of beta reading, as well, so I stumble across some amazing series that way. I can tell you that I used to be obsessed with J.R. Ward’s Blackdagger Brotherhood and I nearly peed my pants with glee when Blay and Quinn got their own book. Sigh.
LF: My all-time favorite series is Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, starting off with Dead Witch Walking, but I have many other near-favorites ranging from Urban to Epic Fantasy to Paranormal or Time Travel Romance to Dystopian and beyond.
5. I’d love to know…. Do you prefer to read or write romance?
LP: I enjoy writing it, but I LOVE reading it more, I think. It’s less stressful and I can sit back and enjoy the ride. J
LF: Um…both? I love the surprise of reading stories with a strong romantic plot or subplot, but I have to admit that writing the romantic subplot is one of my favorite parts of each project. And there’s nothing better than a slow-burn, long build-up romance, which is what I’ve got going on in my Urban Fantasy series, the Kat Dubois Chronicles. I’m several books in, and things are finally starting to happen with the main character and her intended love interest. This next book’s going to be pretty fun to write… 😉
6. I’m writing my first novel and I’m not looking forward to editing it…. Did you edit a lot from The Ending series? If so, was it hard to take parts out of your beloved story? LP: We edited After The Ending SO much it’s crazy. We changed the tense, we took out chapters and scenes and emails—added text messages…the list goes on. Revising has good and bad connotations for me. It’s daunting in that you need to be able to admit that your first draft was crap. That’s just the way it works. But when you revise it, you get to focus on making it better instead of just getting it down on paper. You get to add in the fun details and focus on the characters more than the story, if that makes sense. It does free you mind a bit to know you will be coming back to each word (many times), so writing, “his eyes looked like (something)” helps you keep going when you’re flowing and you can fill in the particulars later J
LF: I love editing and revising! I think that embracing that phase has really helped to free up my imagination during the outlining and first draft writing phases of each project, to the degree that those first drafts end up being better and requiring less revising. It’s a win-win! But yes, for the first couple books, it was hard to cut parts, but we did. We cut entire scenes, even resequencing one of the books altogether. But in the end, that book is so much better than it was originally, and when I read it, I can’t even remember what we wrote originally. For me, the cutting of lines, scenes, and even entire characters has gotten much easier with each consecutive project, but it wasn’t easy, at first.
7. I’ve yet to come up with an actual way to choose characters names…. But how did you select names for your characters from The Ending series? LP: Because we started off writing a blog, we didn’t think about names the way he should have (Camille, Clara, Cece, Cam). We got a lot of flack for not switching them up enough and making it confusing for readers. Now, names are SO important to me. In my Saratoga Falls Love Story, Nothing But Trouble, I had THE perfect name in my head for Colton Hayes’ character—that was his identity. But when beta readers got ahold of the manuscript, there was concern because of an actor named Colton Haynes and that was distracting them while reading. I had to change my Colton’s last name and it was SO hard to do.
LF: Funny you should ask that! I think our method (or lack there of) for choosing character names early on in the creation of The Ending Series is one of the things we would do differently, if given the chance (Jason, Jake, Jack…). Now, I make sure that few, if any, names start with the same first letter, and pay attention to (and try to avoid) names that rhyme, as well.
8. What was the hardest scene to write? LP: Hmmm…shootout scenes are always difficult for me—Into The Fire, in the center of town, outside the Colony, and in Before The Dawn with the final showdown, if you know what I mean. It’s often hard for me to wrap my head around “strategic” ways to kill people, fight each other, etc.
LF: Those final few scenes in the last book of The Ending Series were pretty tough. We wanted to make sure we delivered on everything we’d promised throughout the series, and we ended up heavily revising the ending—cutting one scene entirely and bulking up another quite a bit. I’m super happy with how it all wrapped up, but it wasn’t easy getting there. In another series, I had a scene where I literally wrote my character into a bathroom, trapping her in there with no way out. It took me a week or two to figure my way out of that one, and now I think it’s one of the most memorable scenes in that book.
9. Did you have to set yourself writing goals? Is that the best way to get things finished…. as I struggle to juggle writing and family life. LP: Yes. My entire day is planned around writing. I write for two(+) hours in the morning, then go to my day job. On my full writing days, I try to write for at least half the day and use the second half for the marketing and the business side of it (there’s A LOT to do all the time). If I’m on a deadline, I’ll set word counts per day or week.
LF: I write first thing in the morning, Monday through Friday. No social media, no checking stats and sales. And absolutely no emails. I walk the dogs, make my tea, then cuddle up with the cats and my laptop and settle in to write. I stop at lunch and spend the afternoon doing more business-y things. That schedule works for me, but each person is different. The only absolute is that you have to get butt-in-seat time. Figure out what motivates you, what you need to do to hold yourself accountable, and get your butt in that seat. 🙂
10. If you could spend time with a character from your book…. who would it be and what would you do?? LP: Normally, I would say Harper. But, today, I’m feeling like it would be Jake. It’s hilarious to think about. I have NO clue what I would say or do, especially since he’s the strong silent type. **Cue the crickets and awkward silence** I could pick is brain about spin-off series stuff, though J
LF: From The Ending Series? I’d have to say Jason… *blushes*
11. What genre do you prefer to write? And would you consider writing in another genre? LP: I always say that writing, for me, is like Skittles—I want to taste (write) the rainbow. I write multiple genres, including post-apocalyptic, contemporary new adult, historical fiction, alternative history… all with a splash of romance. I love myself a good love story, so you’ll always find that in my books.
LF: I’m pretty happy with anything in the Science Fiction or Fantasy realm. I’m writing Urban Fantasy right now, but I’ve also finished up a Paranormal Romance/Time Travel series and a Post-apocalyptic/Dystopian series (obviously). One genre I’ve yet to tackle but would like to one day is Space Opera, and I’d also like to try my hand and Epic Fantasy.
12. What is your method when creating first thoughts of your writing and ideas? LP: Honestly, I need to bounce ideas off of people, so I generally come up with a basic story outline and ideas, then I go have drinks with my friend(s) and they give me feedback. It also helps get me exciting about starting something new, which can be daunting at times. I’m a verbal processer, for sure.
LF: I go for walks. Lots and lots of walks. I listen to audiobooks I’ve already read/listened to, usually books in the genre I’m currently writing, and just sort of zone out, letting my thoughts wander through the potential story. I usually do that for a few days, jotting down ideas in a notebook, before actually attempting an outline.
13. Do you have a favourite place and time to write?
LP: Once I get my office fixed up, I will hopefully never want to leave, though right now, I would take the couch to my office (in disarray, though that’s where I sit now). As far as a time to write, I’m currently trying to train my brain to write in the morning. I like to write in the evening when things are quiet and chill, but after work is always crazy and cuts into my writing time. Mornings are more conducive to my crazy life, at least while I have a day job.
LF: Morning, sitting on the couch in my office with a cup of tea and a cat or two.
14. Do you write everyday?
LP: If I have a draft to write, then yes, at least Monday – Friday. Weekends, sometimes. If I’m revising/editing/plotting, I’ll use my writing time in the mornings to do that (or answer interview questions J)
LF: Sort of. I either outline, write, revise, or on the very rare occasion, beta read during my morning block. And I take weekends off. I didn’t use to, and I found I was draining my creative energy faster that I could replenish it. Now, I’ve found a good, healthy balance.
15. What else do we have to look forward to from you both?
LP: Now that Dust and Shadow is finished (or in the final round of editing), I will dive into the 3rd book in my Saratoga Falls Love Stories, Told You So. I’m excited to change things up a bit. Creating a new world for Dust and Shadow was exhausting. Revisiting the Saratoga Falls crew will be like hanging out with old friends. (LF can speak to the Ending Series goodies coming up.)
LF: Well, we’ve got one more project planned for The Ending Series proper—World After: A Collection of Stories. It’s companion book, World Before, comes out on July 31. We have a spinoff project planned, as well, but that’s farther off. Otherwise, I’m currently writing Soul Eater, the fourth book in my Urban Fantasy series, the Kat Dubois Chronicles, and I plan on writing at least two more books in that series before starting something else new.
