a REAL introduction to Korean rock music

H.O.T’s Jang Woo Hyuk (장우혁)

when k-pop fans want to convince their non-k-pop fan friends that, in fact, k-music spans a lot of music genres, they take for examples of rock songs “Mirotic” from TVXQ. I love TVXQ, I love this song but it sounds a little bit “too pop” to convince a metal head or a rock music fan in general. 

that’s why I suggest a (non-exhaustive) playlist of songs that can be labelled as “k-rock” (or at least “Korean pop-rock”) in my opinion... you’re welcome.

IMPORTANT: I tried to put the songs from the softer songs (ex: pop-rock) to the harder (ex: nu metal). There are also a lot of songs from Seo Taiji because I love him and I do whatever I want.

(1)  이승환 (Lee Seung Hwan) -  나의 영웅 (My Hero) - this song can’t be considered as a “rock song” but it cannot be considered as a “pop song” either. this is a ballad but Lee Seung Hwan growls here and there.

(2)  신화 (Shinhwa) - 악동보고서 (Yo!) - this song cannot be labelled as a rock song either but I love Dongwan’s growl.  warning: n-word here and there

(3)  서태지와 아이들(Seotaiji and Boys) - 발해를 꿈꾸며(Dreaming of Bal-Hae) - here comes a “real” rock song. The youngest generation of k-pop fans knows his song “Come Back Home” thanks to BTS’ remake. whereas, the intellectual (lol) know that he can be considered as the father of k-pop. however, he is not only a pop singer since he is very versatile. he’s always mixed rock, hip-hop and pop music in his songs. I think that you should listen to absolutely ALL of his discography.

(4) 젝스키스 (SECHSKIES) - 학원별곡(School Song)  - this song caused public outrage because of its lyrics that denounce academic pressure in South Korea. when your debut single is iconic.

(5) 서태지와 아이들(Seotaiji and Boys) - 필승(Must Triumph) 

(6) 서태지(Seo Taiji) - 울트라맨이야(Ultramania)- this article should have been called “I want to marry Seo Taiji” (nu metal)

(7)  서태지(Seo Taiji) - 인터넷 전쟁(Internet War) - my favourite song of all the time (nu metal)
