Attention, Australian university students!
A petition has been launched by Dr Monique Ryan (Member for Kooyong) for Jason Clare (Minster for education) to fix HECS debt, making it easier to pay off existing debt, and is a step in the right direction to once again making university more accessible to australian students.
It used to be free! Now it’s being indexed at unsustainable and unacceptable rates.
Please consider signing and sharing.

I was talking to my American friends and I truly didn’t grasp how fucked up you economy and education was until I mentioned off handedly that I just got approved for my HECS debt and CSP.
Then I had to explain to them what exactly those were. Basically for those who don’t know, a HECS debt is a way to pay off your student loans which is really easy to apply for, and once you pass a certain pay bracket a percentage of your pay goes to the debt. The actual rate of which doesn’t change and is also much lower than a normal bank loan. It’s interest free and in general is much cheaper than banks. You need a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) before you can get a CSP. Some universities let you apply for both in the same document while others have you go to the government website.
They were all blown away by this and the conversation went into minimal wage and I yet again shared a little fun fact.
At my old job, my minimum wage was $18.50/h for my age with 1.5x pay Sundays and 2.5x pay public holidays. At one point I was payed almost $450 in a single day just as a casual worker. In retail.
So if your government ever tries telling you a decent minimal wage is unrealistic. No it’s not. They just want to keep you poor.

im wisely second guessing posting my face on here but anyway. Incredibly happy to finally graduate university (even though I'm probably going to be going back one day for a masters/PhD). Not gonna focus on that- for now I'm going to enjoy people paying me for my time rather than the other way around
#hecs debt is going to take a while to pay off but we're not gonna think about that...#now's the time for celebration

Ughhhhh I did my tax return but the estimate is about $900 more than I thought it would be and I don't have the money. I now need to decide whether or not to request a deferral on my hecs. It would take care of about $550 of that so I could probably afford to pay the whole amount by october. But hecs indexation is so crazy that it would be better in the long run to just pay it now, and set up a payment plan for that $900.
#the hecs indexation is literally BULLSHIT#it was between 0.6 and 2 percent for all the years i had the debt then last year 7.1 this year 4.6. why the fuck?

I finally remembered to check and I got $2500 wiped from my HECS debt. That makes me a little less panicked about how fast it was rising with the stupid indexation.
#if you have a hecs/help debt log into mygov and have a look#even if I am no closer to paying it off#it makes me feel better that's a few grand I don't have to pay

I genueinly don't know why the algorithm keeps feeding me these videos showing teens reacting to their ATAR, given there are barely any teens in my life, I'm not a parent and years away from school.
Also the videos all showing parents crying and hugging their children are also slightly hilarious because back in my day it was the OP and while I got quite a decent score and into my top uni (which I never went to, whoops), my mother's reaction was the most 'what do you want, a parade'.
#man get me drunk one time and i'll talk about how while i don't want to undervalue acaemia and teritiary education#i don't regret not doing it as i ended up pretty okay and without a giantass hecs debt#also i think we push it too much on kids! i said it!#anyway happy for you kids on the news#i don't think my mother even took me to sizzlers
