Hey there! Tracy here. Today’s self care tip this week: speak on it! You hear Heben say it on the show all the time, but I don’t know that we’ve ever examined the importance of making those three words a part of your life. Society teaches us all very different things about having a voice: who is allowed to have one, whose is worth listening to, whose is more likely to be believed. White dudes are basically told that their voices matter from the day they’re born (remember all those studies done about how boys are given more attention in classrooms?) while the rest of us have to go through the process of learning how to use our voices, to speak up when we need something or when we have questions or when we’ve been done wrong. It was quite a process for me but I’m getting it down. I self-identify as a mouthy broad and can sometimes barely believe that I spent so much of my life being so quiet.

Is there something you need that you’re afraid to ask for? Something you want to say but don’t because you don’t think anyone cares? Your thoughts, needs, and questions are important. You’re allowed to have them, regardless of what our world may tell you, and they all deserve air and attention. Put it out there. Ask someone. This is good advice for situations big and small. I, for example, was certain recently that my landlord wouldn’t do a thing about an unfair rent increase but I decided to open my mouth anyway, and was surprised to find that there may actually be something we can do. I left the rental office feeling heard and powerful, and I might even find a few extra dollars in my bank account because of it. So, speak on it! Your voice is important, you never know who is listening and a closed mouth doesn’t get fed. <3
