Torrential rain in India’s Himalayas triggered landslides over the weekend that have killed over 50 people, with dozens trapped or missing, officials said on August 14.
Unusually heavy rain and melting glaciers have brought deadly flash floods to the mountains of India and neighboring Pakistan and Nepal over the past year or two, with government officials increasingly blaming climate change. Television footage from India’s Himachal Pradesh state showed houses flattened by landslides, buses and cars hanging on the edge of precipices after roads gave way, and hundreds of people at rescue sites as emergency workers struggled to clear debris. “Again, tragedy has befallen Himachal Pradesh, with continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours,” the state’s chief minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, said in a post on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Reports of cloudbursts and landslides have emerged from various parts of the state, resulting in loss of precious lives and property.” Reports of more casualties kept coming in on August 14 as the chief minister inspected some of the damage. In one of the most deadly incidents, a temple collapsed in the state capital, Shimla, with rescuers pulling out at least nine bodies, the chief minister said. Schools and other educational institutes had been ordered to close, and people in danger were being moved to safety in shelters, state officials said. Parts of the state had received as much as 273 mm (10.75 inches) of rain in 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. “This is the first time we’re seeing multiple cloudburst incidents and widespread damage in the state,” said state disaster management official Praveen Bhardwaj. In the Solan district, houses collapsed after a cloudburst, killing at least seven people, and a mother and her child were killed in the Mandi district when their house collapsed, Bhardwaj said.

Sar Pass Trek Safety Tips: Hike Smart, Stay Safe!
Tumblr media
The Kasol Sar Pass Trekking adventure is one of the most thrilling and scenic treks in the Himalayas, attracting adventure seekers from around the world. Situated at a maximum altitude of 13,800 ft, this trek offers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and an unforgettable experience.
However, trekking in such high-altitude regions comes with its challenges. To ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, it’s essential to be well-prepared. Among the many treks near Kasol, the Sar Pass Trek stands out for its stunning landscapes and adventurous trails. Here are some important Sar Pass Trek Safety Tips to help you hike smart and stay safe!
How to Reach Kasol, Himachal Pradesh
Kasol, a picturesque village in Himachal Pradesh, is well-connected by air, road, and rail, making it accessible for travelers from various parts of India. Here’s how you can reach this beautiful trekking hub:
By Air:
The nearest airport to Kasol is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar Airport - KUU), located about 31 KM away. From Bhuntar, you can hire a cab or taxi to reach Kasol in approximately 1 hour. However, flight options to Bhuntar are limited, so travelers often prefer flying to Chandigarh Airport (IXC), which has better connectivity. From Chandigarh, you can continue your journey by road.
By Road:
Kasol has a well-connected road network, making it a popular destination for road trips.
You can drive yourself or hire a cab from nearby cities like Delhi (520 KM), Chandigarh (270 KM), or Manali (75 KM).
Regular buses operate from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, you can take a local bus or taxi to reach Kasol.
By Train:
The nearest railway station to Kasol is Joginder Nagar Railway Station (JDNX), situated 144 KM away. From Joginder Nagar, you can hire a cab or take a bus to Kasol. Since Joginder Nagar is a small station with limited connectivity, most travelers prefer reaching Chandigarh or Pathankot Railway Station and continuing the journey by road.
Whichever mode of transport you choose, the journey to Kasol is filled with breathtaking landscapes and serene mountain views, making it an experience in itself!
Understand the Sar Pass Trek Height & Challenges
The Sar Pass Trek height reaches 13,800 ft, making it a moderate to difficult trek. At this altitude, the air gets thinner, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. To adapt to the altitude:    Spend a day acclimatizing in Kasol before starting the trek.  Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or smoking.  Ascend gradually and avoid rushing.
Be Aware of Sar Pass Temperature Variations
The Sar Pass temperature can vary significantly depending on the season.   Summer (May – June): 0°C to 22°C (Pleasant during the day, cold at night).   Autumn (September – October): -5°C to 15°C (Colder, with chances of early snowfall).
Always carry thermal wear, waterproof jackets, gloves, and a warm cap to stay comfortable throughout the trek.
Choose the Right Time – Sar Pass Trek Best Time
The Sar Pass Trek best time is from May to June and September to October. These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and safe trekking conditions. Avoid trekking during monsoon (July-August) due to heavy rains and slippery trails.
Pack Smart for the Sar Pass Trek
Packing light yet carrying the essential gear is key to a safe trek. Here’s what you need:
Trekking Shoes: Sturdy, high-ankle boots with good grip.   Layered Clothing: Quick-dry t-shirts, thermals, fleece jackets, and waterproof gear. Backpack (50-60L): Comfortable with padded straps.   Sleeping Bag: Required if not provided by your trek organizer.   Trekking Poles: Helps with balance and reduces strain on knees.   First Aid Kit: Bandages, antiseptics, altitude sickness medicine.   Torch & Extra Batteries: Useful for early morning or late-night hikes.
Follow Trail Etiquette & Safety Rules
Stick to marked trails and follow your trek leader’s instructions.    Avoid littering; always carry your trash back.    Be cautious on snow-covered sections to prevent slipping.   If feeling dizzy or nauseous, inform your guide immediately.
Enjoy a Safe & Thrilling Kasol Sar Pass Trekking Adventure!
The Sar Pass Trek is a dream destination for adventure lovers, offering stunning landscapes, thrilling trails, and breathtaking views. By preparing well, understanding Sar Pass temperature changes, and following safety tips, you can enjoy this trek to the fullest while staying safe. So, plan your journey during the Sar Pass Trek best time, pack smart, and get ready for an unforgettable Himalayan adventure!

STORMY NIGHTS IN BAIRAGARH, HIMACHAL PRADESH VLOG 3
In Chamba’s embrace, we found our place. After all the struggles, we reached Bairagarh , Himachal Pradesh situated at an elevation of 489 meters in the Chamba district. My plan was to reach Sach Pass, but bad weather made our journey difficult and harder to move forward.
Instead, I set up my camp in Bairagarh and spent the night in the dense and lonely jungle. I cooked my meal and waited for the morning. It was one of those STORMY NIGHTS IN BAIRAGARH , with heavy rain making it a thrilling and exciting experience, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The rain and wind made the night feel even more haunting. My heart was racing, and I prayed for my safety every second as I braved the intensity of the stormy night in Bairagarh.
But as they say, you must go through some hardships to see beautiful places. Join us in MOHALI TO SPITI VIA SACHPASS – Vlog 3 , where we share the excitement of our unexpected camping adventure.

What Are the Best Months for a Motorcycle Expedition to Pangi?
Pangi Valley, a remote and breathtakingly beautiful region in Himachal Pradesh, is a dream destination for motorcycle riders seeking adventure on some of India’s most dangerous roads. However, due to its high-altitude terrain and extreme weather conditions, the timing of your trip plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
Tumblr media
Best Time for a Pangi Motorcycle Expedition
The ideal months for a motorcycle tour to Pangi Valley are June to September. During this period, the roads are open, the weather is relatively stable, and the valley is at its most picturesque. Let’s break down the seasonal conditions to help you plan your journey better.
June – The Beginning of the Riding Season
June marks the start of the riding season in Pangi Valley as snow starts melting, clearing the high mountain passes like Sach Pass and Rohtang Pass. The roads, although still challenging due to occasional snow patches and water crossings, become accessible to experienced riders.
Pros: Snow-covered peaks provide a stunning backdrop. Freshly opened roads offer thrilling off-road experiences. Less tourist crowd compared to peak months.
Cons: Water crossings can be tricky due to melting snow. Landslides may occur as the ice melts.
July – Best for Thrill Seekers
July is one of the most adventurous months to visit Pangi Valley. The roads are more stable, and the lush greenery of the valley makes the ride breathtaking. However, early monsoons can bring unpredictable weather.
Pros: Comfortable riding temperatures. Streams and waterfalls are at their most scenic. Roads are more accessible compared to June.
Cons: Monsoons can make roads slippery. Risk of landslides increases.
August – Peak Season for Motorcycle Expeditions
August is considered the best month for a Pangi motorcycle tour. The roads are fully accessible, the weather is pleasant, and the valley is bursting with greenery and vibrant landscapes.
Pros: Best time for photography and sightseeing. Roads are at their best condition. More fellow riders on the route for company and assistance.
Cons: Can get crowded, especially near popular spots. Sudden weather changes are possible.
September – The Perfect Blend of Adventure and Tranquility
September is another excellent month for a motorcycle expedition to Pangi. The monsoon rains subside, making the roads drier and safer, while the landscape retains its lush beauty.
Pros: Clear skies and stunning mountain views. Less tourist traffic. More stable road conditions.
Cons: Some higher-altitude areas might start experiencing early snowfall. Days are shorter, so riding hours are reduced.
Months to Avoid
October to May: Heavy snowfall makes the passes inaccessible, cutting off Pangi Valley from the rest of Himachal. Temperatures drop below freezing, and only experienced winter expedition teams can navigate the harsh conditions.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a motorcycle trip to Pangi Valley, July to September offers the best conditions for a safe yet thrilling ride. Whether you prefer the snow-covered beauty of June, the adventurous monsoon trails of July, or the post-monsoon serenity of September, each month has something unique to offer.
Gear up, ride safe, and enjoy the ultimate Himalayan motorcycle adventure!

At least 31 people have died and dozens more remain missing Friday after flash floods washed away houses and bridges in India's northeast Sikkim state.
Heavy rainfall on Wednesday caused a lake high in the mountains to burst, leading to major flooding that authorities said has impacted the lives of some 22,000 people.
The death toll varied on Friday, with Reuters news agency putting the toll at 40 on Friday. Sikkim officials put the death toll at 18 on Thursday evening.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office announced relief funds for the state and deployed a disaster response team to help affected people, according to a press release by the government.
Soldiers missing in floods
The flooding, which began shortly after Wednesday midnight, was worsened after the waters cracked open a 6-year-old dam in the mountainous state of Sikkim.
Floodwater then gushed through towns in the Lachan Valley, submerging army camps.
At least 23 soldiers were reported missing in the floods on Wednesday, according to the Indian Army. Search and rescue operations are still underway.
Vinay Bhushan Pathak, the state's top bureaucrat, said Thursday that 26 people had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Nearly 3,000 tourists and 700 taxi drivers were also stranded in the flood-hit areas, Pathak added.
Latest deadly flood to hit northeast India
The incident is the latest deadly flood to hit northeast India in a year of unusually heavy rains.
Nearly 50 people died in flash floods in Himachal Pradesh state in August. Record rains in July killed more than 100 people over two weeks in northern India.
