first draft of my specter family. i have barely slept in 2 days so i don't think i'll finish them (they're both wip and i haven't touched layne nor ophelia) have you ever taken a townie into cas and been horrified at their how they look until you scroll through hair and fall in love with them? that's what just happened with Olive. she is definitely carried by @northernsiberiawinds skinblend. i've been dying to use that hair on at least 1 sim and it just suits her so well. i think i'm gonna find them a nice new orleans style house and make them involved with working at the cemetery (career? idk how it works yet) i made my nyon specter aka nervous subject while being heavily inspired by @somewhereinstrangetown 's nervous subject that i crushed on. >.> hope you don't mind.

Sorry again for how few and far in-between my Tumblr posts are, guys! I'll try and be more frequent with them!
It hit me a while back that for all I talk about my Next-Gen on Twitter, I hardly ever talk about my fan kids here on Tumblr! So, I decided to throw together a ref sheet for my main girl, Emmy, to get started on that and introduce her to y'all!
---
Her full name is Emilia Luna-Ophelia Barrabas-Darling, but almost everyone calls her Emmy for short. She was named after her late grandmother on Eduardo's side, although Laurel was actually the one who suggested it when she was born. (Eduardo absolutely cried when she suggested it, not that he wasn't already sobbing lol.) Her middle names were each chosen by one of her parents. (Luna for Eduardo, Ophelia for Laurel bc her mummy's a Shakespeare geek and we love her for it aaaaa.)
Probably 21 in the reference, definitely college-aged!
Working in retail currently to pay the bills, but saving up to attend art school when she gets the chance, wants to work as a background artist in animation.
Is generally a really friendly and outgoing person, extremely open with her personality, interests and affection, much like her mom. KNOWN for her hugs that could throw out someone's back, just generally really kind and chill, basically a big ol' puppy lady. She's also pretty stubborn and abrasive, however, and does have a temper on her, however. Aside from just generally getting grumpy when she's tired, exhausted or frustrated, she is just as willing to throw some HANDS when someone's pissed er off, just like her old man.
A pretty artsy-fartsy kinda gal, but not so much a snob about art, more like she'll happily ramble about art techniques and history when the subject is brought up. Also has a love for dancing, sports and Shakespeare.
Is extremely close with her family, she adores her Mummy Laurel and is a MASSIVE Daddy's Girl for Eduardo, she never misses the chance to see and spend time with them, and always wants to make them proud. (Her dad was her inspiration to start drawing when she was little, and always thinks of Eduardo and Laurel both as her heroes.) Also loves her little brother Leonardo, and is very protective of him, mess with him you mess with HER. >:(
Also loves her Uncle Mark and Uncle Jon with all her heart, they basically were third and fourth parents to her ever since she was a baby and she knows she can always go to them for anything. Very close to her other uncles, too, but out of all of them, she's closest to Jon and Mark. Also loves her Grandmado, and misses her terribly as an adult.
Has ADHD and dyslexia, so she often uses word processors and audio books to help with the latter and tends to plan and schedule her days in advance and stick heavily with routines to avoid losing focus with the former. Still has her struggles but knows she's supported and loved by those around her and is too stubborn to let them win.
Loves avocados, just like her dad. It was one of her first words, and to this day, her and her dad have a designated day all for eating avocados all throughout. (HC BY THE AWESOME @tamaraskabr ITS SO WHOLESOME I LOVE IT QwQ) Other than that, she loves basically anything mint chocolate, she's a simple woman lol.
---
All the tidbits I've got for now! Plan to follow up the post with some sketches of her other outfits I've worked on! For now, hope this gives some insight on who she is so I can share more art of her on here with context!
she's my goober daughter and i love her sm lol

Roméo et Juliette: de la Haine à l'Amour - Redesign - 2024
To understand my completely unnecessary desire to redesign a musical that is over twenty years old, you have to understand that Romeo et Juliette is my Roman Empire. Long explanation under the break.
I wanted this design to be an homage in the silliest way possible.
I really leant into the sensibilities of original costume designer Dominique Borg, who used contemporary colour and technique and applied it to historical (or pseudo-historical) silhouettes.
Broadly, I wanted the Montagues to feel English in their shapes--Elizabethan doublets, high necklines, and ruffs, in homage to Shakespeare and the source text. They're all leather, denim, silver hardware--a little bit punk with status.
The Capulets would be deeply Italian Renaissance in their silhouettes, in reference to the setting of the play. They're all velvets, lace, chiffon, satins, and gold hardware--giving them an airiness of the Mediterranean while still allowing some drape here and there.
I wanted each family to have a slightly more broad palette than most versions afford them--which is why the Montagues have a smattering of green and magenta while the Capulets play with some soft yellows and lavenders.
The ball scene is largely Arthurian in inspiration--just because I took the idea of "what would the 1500s consider vintage and costume-y in the same way we think of the Victorian era" and ran away with it. There's also some silly Y2K nonsense because I rewatched the "On dit dans la rue" music video and thought "What if the Capulets threw this big Arthurian affair with full elegance and the Montagues cobbled together some gay club outfits circa 1998 fits out of a suit of armour."
FINALLY, I wanted Roméo and Juliette to take on elements of each other's family's style and colours for the end of the play--because to be loved is to be changed.
So here is a breakdown of my choices for each of the looks.
Un Jour: Here we see Roméo in his base look. It's a two-tone patent leather double with multiple zipper details. The peplum is criss-crossed zippers. The wings over the shoulder seams are edged with zipper teeth. The ruff detail at the neckline is also edged with zipper teeth. He has along zipper across the front of his boot like he's trying to be the next Sailor Moon. I don't know y'all. I went a little feral with trying to figure out all the places I could put zippers in.
Juliette is the most juvenile looking in Un Jour. I imagine that in this scene, she's being dressed by her family instead of her own volition.
She's in an asymmetrical, empire-waisted gown that is likely a brocaded or printed silk. Her chemise is a sheer lavender georgette or chiffon that peaks through the lacing at the shoulders and along the upper arms. She has a velvet choker and velvet belt and a heavily stoned velvet headband. Her hairstyling (it would have to be a wig, it would be NUTS to not make this a wig) is an homage to the open-weave Juliet caps that were similar to nets worn in the period on hair. Italy was, fun fact, one of the few countries where women didn't cover their hair during the renaissance.
L'amour heureux: As I explained above, Roméo's outfit is so silly. The wrap around glasses. The one arm of armour. The sheer, stoned period shirt. The gold brocade on the trousers. The pearl earring. The many, unnecessary belts. Bless this mess. It's also a cheeky little nod to Baz Lurhmann's Romeo + Juliet.
Juliette is, ostensibly, cosplaying as Guinevere or Lady Macbeth or Ophelia or any number of Middle Ages women. The ball is the Capulet's opportunity to really sell their daughter as marriage material so I wanted the look to feel bridal, hence the veil. I wanted to give reference to exaggerated surcote sleeves without actually doing them, hence the sleeve-into-glove and bow detailing with trails down to the floor. There is also a hint of yellow chemise underneath, which is actually just her Le balcon look underdressed for ease of the quick change (yes, I did think about this.) The dress is velvet with one panel of lace in-set into the underskirt. The bows are satin-face organza.
Le balcon: Romeo would change into his base again (during Le Poète). Juliette is in a simple yet totally impractical sheer chemise + slip combo. I wanted this soft yellow for this sequence because I always think about the lines "O she doth teach the torches to burn bright!" and "But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?/It is the east and Juliet is the sun" when it comes to describing her. The chemise would likely be a chiffon, while the slip would be silk.
Aimer: I say this with my whole chest--I hate how they changed the palette for Aimer in the 2010 production. I want my lovers soft and angelic and matching in this moment of union. Here we see a bit more of Romeo's lace shirt--his sleeves are laced like Juliette's in the first look. His doublet, trouser, boot combo are off-white leather in homage to the original production. Juliette's dress has a similar train length to her ball look (again, bridal) and we see the neckline creep up into a ruff (Elizabethan, rather than Italian). Lots of sheer net and lace with cream bridal satin as a skirt. Tiered sleeves. A little circlet on her head.
Le poison: Honestly? Just wanted her to have another outfit change before her death dress as a transitional choice. There's so much more of the purple in this look because it's going to take us into the blue elements of the final dress.
La mort de Roméo/Juliette: Again. To be loved is to be changed. Juliette has a dropped waistline, a high neckline and ruff, and a heart shaped cut-out detail (see: boob window). She's straight up in blue, and all the sweet and soft pinks of her youth are gone. Romeo has lost his high neckline, ruff, wins, and peplum in favour of a shorter Italian silhouette. He's asymmetrical (a call-back to Juliette's asymmetry) and all the edging detail is done in red. Mantua as a setting is patchworked, torn, and dirty, so I imagine the doublet is pieced together from scraps of jersey (so it's drippy and sad and hangs off him in a lovely manner).
#romeo et juliette#damien sargue#cecilia cara#joyce draws#retj redesign 2024#retj#this is the most unhinged thing I have ever dreamed up#anyways more to come soon#will probably do mercutio and the prince and benvolio and tybalt together as one post#did little 14 year old joyce think this is what she would STILL be talking about? nO#also if you've ever wondered what my costume design process looks like it's this

This one is kind of tricky but I don't regret this choice: for me, Tissaia had been for years a figure of judgment. For sorceresses for instance, for Aretuza, for Yennefer. It is even said that she is the only one to be able to see through any illusion, and thus being the most indicated to judge. If the Netflix show did something good, it's giving us MyAnna Buring as Tissaia. Her suicide too, is heavy with judgment symbolism: it's her choices, her judgment that led to help Vilgefortz in the Thanedd coup and brutally led to Aretuza's fall. And ultimately, she judged herself and deemed she wasn't going to live anymore.
As for the symbolism, I was heavily inspired by the pre raphaelite painting 'Ophelia', which explains why the flower colours are so bright (also to counterbalance Tissaia's more dull tones).

Do you prefer Historic or Fantasy Names?
I love a good Fantasy name like Aragorn or Daenerys, but I remember a name like Samwise or Jamie. Case in point: I just spelled Daenerys as Danaerys while trying to give this example. Twice.
Personally, I find it easier to relate to characters with relatable names. It makes it easier for me to think about them, to call them something in my head and begin to see them as people instead of concepts.
Moreover, you can use existing names to indicate certain worldbuilding aspects without drawing attention to them.
For instance: my From the Bay of Fangs anthology focuses on the Hunters of Fenblith, whose culture is heavily inspired by that of England. Thus, the Hunters usually have names such as Gilbert, Henry, Ruth, or Ophelia. However, sometimes there's a Mahala or a Nnamdi in there.
This indicates that most of the Hunters are culturally "English" (or trace their roots to some other "European" culture), but that some of them hail from much further afield. Thus, I address that the City of Fenblith is at least somewhat culturally diverse and allows people from all backgrounds to become Hunters without having to say it.
There's something beautiful in the creation of names, I'm not going to pretend there isn't. Nor am I going to deny that there are a lot of real names that I just don't know and they shouldn't be excluded from stories because of my limited knowledge or experience.
But making my own characters nestle inside my mind is essential for writing, and using names I can remember is vital to that, as even names I come up with myself often slip my mind.
So, which do you prefer? Do you use a baby naming website or fantasy name generator? Or, glory to you, do you painstakingly create your own names?

Never love an anchor is a classic and is a complicated motherly relationship song for all characters forever and ever <3 I love the crane wives in general but I think the garden and the well are underrated songs too
So for songs I feel along those vibes I give you:

Cleopatra - oh i am fond of this one, oh you could absolutely make a disco animatic out of this hkjh the first verse being harry and dora ("And it hardened like my heart did when you left town") and the second verse being kim and eyes ("So I drive a taxi, and the traffic distracts me / From the strangers in my backseat, they remind me of you") and the bridge waugh (HARRY - "And the only gifts from my Lord were a birth and a divorce" / KIM - "But I've read this script and the costume fits, so I'll play my part") and then the bedroom after the tribunal ("leads me back to my guestroom / It's a bed and a bathroom / a place for the end'') OUGH VERY NICE HJKGH <33

TMI Tuesday Author asks!
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?
hello! these are such thoughtful questions to pull, thank you💙
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
i'm gonna shoutout an underdog here - you're so golden i really like because it's one of the most lighthearted and soft things i've written. it's very short at 0.9k and i banged it out in an hour one late night to unwind after work. i greatly enjoyed doing it, and the fact that it was heavily inspired by @omens-for-ophelia's fanart makes me very very happy!!
31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?
the last time i answered this i cited @bowtiepastabitch and @queer-reader-07's comments on I'm Beginning to See the Light, which still rings true as an answer, but i'm gonna add to these and mention @fuckyeahgoodomensfanfic's post about that same fic because op opens her review by saying it's the best trans sex she's ever read😭 i think i just about fainted the first time i read that hehe
what are your answers to these questions, with regards to your own work?

Which character has changed the most since your first draft of them, and how?
(God sorry for sending so many questions)
(OMG NO WORRIES I LOVE THESE KINDS OF QUESTIONS PLS KEEP SENDING THEM-)
But OH MY GOD!!!!! E D G A R. Edgar from The Monster and the Butterfly is the character that I feel has changed the most since the very VERY first draft of this story. Both in design and character! He and Sophie are some of my oldest OCs, with their story existing in some way shape or form for about 10 years when I first started writing in middle school!
Be prepared for a long post because omg I love rambling about the evolution of characters and stories, I hope you don't mind!!
Also I got excited about this ask so I included a rough visual of Edgar's previous designs:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3d81727ea92e80987de3ca44dbe1d4b0/f237f1f10b102ce2-6c/s540x810/52a6f565334ea5452eec63c0d9615cd042503b67.jpg)
Starting in 2014 he (or rather she) was Ophelia, a witch that cursed herself with a rogue spell, and her 'beauty' counterpart was a boy named Samael that was sacrificed to her by a witch cult lol. It was very cringe, very much 2010s Wattpad content (i mean...the story literally started with Samael waking up to his alarm and mom waking him up for school)... and I distinctly remember calling this story "Beautiful Beast" because I thought I was being very original with a female beast x male beauty story lmfao (i was not)
Then around that same time I discovered The Phantom of the Opera...meaning that Edgar was going to become a poorly done carbon copy of the Phantom lol. He was like this for about a year, and across the board he was a dragon shifter for some reason? I cannot remember why lol...and also I remember in these versions of the story he had a brother named Lazarus who's FC was Robby Benson, and his 'beauty' in this version was named Kristine and she had a son (???????). Again, very 2010s Wattpad cringe, very much plagiarized Phantom X Christine fanfic (i'm very sorry)
It was around 2016 when I discovered the movie Panna a Netvor/Beauty and the Beast (1979), a very gaudy, atmospheric Gothic horror retelling of the fairytale from then Czechoslovakia. I was OBSESSED With it (and still am!) so I wanted to create a bird-like beast like in the movie. At the same time I was also obsessed with stuff like Black Butler and Penny Dreadful so I was inspired to change this story set in Victorian Era London. But this version of Edgar was VERY horrible and very much made it a tragic horror story rather than Gothic romance. He was the one behind the Jack the Ripper murders, drinking the blood of woman to satiate himself, and had very poorly-written schizophrenia as he was 'haunted' by his dead mom. I did away with this idea around the time of the pandemic because I found the idea insensitive and overly-edgy. But nonetheless this was where TMATB as we know it came to be: Gothic romantic setting in late Victorian era London with a bird-themed beast and a main female character who was into gardening in some capacity.
Then story started becoming more romantic, Edgar went through another design change to now be a fleshy vulture-thing, and was now becoming a sympathetic, gentle beast who loved reading and ornithology. Still I wasn't satisfied in terms of his design tho.
So then around 2020, after wanting inspiration to create a more humanoid-looking beast (and getting such inspiration from Brad Dourif as Grima Wormtongue in the LOTR films and Danny DeVito as The Penguin in Tim Burton's Batman Returns), Edgar's design became this:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2fd51a73575c8a96118303f393fc1d05/f237f1f10b102ce2-b5/s540x810/eaab8ebfcdc2a6eca85d280f5033f28c02651c8c.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/55b90410286e4f22df4672967ae862c4/f237f1f10b102ce2-6f/s540x810/102db206d1529d7baacc16e97c6be805079af074.jpg)
While remaining a romantic hero, his role has become the more feminine one in the romance: he is the one needing saving, he is the one often in distress, he reads romances often intended for women, he's a very passive romantic role, etc. Also, his character is now heavily inspired by historical figures like Joseph Merrick (a.k.a. The Elephant Man) and Quasimodo from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, so now he's a gentle, well-read, kind-hearted, traumatized emotional basket case we all love today!
I hope this is a satisfactory answer omg so sorry for the long ramble of a post!!
