Twenty years ago, an attack on the royal palace in Gilded Helianthia left its rulers dead and the country in turmoil. Little Princesa Perla was never seen again, feared to have been lost to the fire like her parents. Today, her former ward Lieutenant M.J. Sausage is the only person left who believes she must still be alive out there somewhere, posting a reward to the tune of fifty thousand gold for the one who can bring her home to him. Oli Sound is a conman and a crook - he's always looking for the next windfall to keep him fed and sheltered just a few weeks longer, and he doesn't care who he has to lie to to do it. Pearl Moon, orphan and cleaning lady, feels a similar desperation. When their paths cross in the ruins of the abandoned palace, together they hatch a plan that might just get them out of poverty for good. All Pearl has to do is convince the old guard, without believing it herself, that she's the lost princess he's looking for. It's gonna be a difficult journey, and a hell of a lie - but Oli reckons he'll take the bait for long enough that they can split the money and run. After all, she happens to look just like her!

"This dress doesn't fit me."

"What are you talking about?" Oli frowns, once he's confident enough that she actually is dressed to take a look at her. "It fits great! Like it was specially made for you."

"That's not what I mean."

The dress fits, sure, in the most literal sense of the word. Green silks cascade around her legs in smooth undulations, shifting slightly every time she twists; the off-shoulder sleeves are just snug enough not to let the whole ensemble slip, and loose enough that it looks like they're held up on wishes alone. The waist is cinched, but the corset doesn't push too tight on her poor pressured organs - which are not used to this, thank you - to be uncomfortable; if she stands at the right angle (back straight, chin up, shoulders down) she can almost forget that there's anything adjusting her figure at all.

But what she means is that it doesn't fit her. It's not Pearl the cleaning lady; it's Princesa Perla, La Hija De Girasoles, with all the terrifying implications which that title brings. Elegance and propriety weigh heavier than any drape of blackout fabric. This con is more pressure than the most improperly laced corset could ever provide.

Oli waves a dismissive hand at her. "It'll be fine. Don't be nervous - we've got this in the frickin' bag. You're gonna walk in that room and be like, wham, it's me! I'm the Princess! And he's gonna be like, whoa, you've gotta be her, oh my god! And everything's gonna go perfect."

She hopes so. It'd be an awful waste, to travel all the way to Sanctuary just for a rejection and another failed new start. But what other options has she got right now?

"Now get a move on - we're gonna miss the train!"

"Alright, alright," she sighs, and lets herself be dragged along into her new life. The life of Princesa Perla - lost heir of Gilded Helianthia.

She can only hope she fits the dress convincingly enough to look the part.

la princesa de girasoles has been missing since she was a tiny girl, her whole family wiped out in xornoth's attack on the palace. she is presumed dead by everyone but for her old mentor, lieutenant m.j. sausage. twenty years on from her disappearance, he does little more than tend the sunflower garden in the now-obsolete, unlived-in palace gardens. he never gave up hope, though - and all the money the family had left is offered up as reward for her rediscovery and return.

orion "oli" sound has been a conman all his life, a busker and a pickpocket. he gets by, but barely. and he's always relying on the next half-baked scheme to get another windfall, another place to sleep for the next few weeks, another grace period before he gets driven out of town again. maybe this time, he keeps promising himself. this time he'll get rich for good.

pearl moon doesn't have a past, not really. she's been a destitute orphan since she can remember, and traded one cruel workhouse for another when she turned eighteen. but she bears an uncanny resemblance to the paintings of the little princess, and those gaps in her memory might just lead her back to the unknown somewhere she feels like she must belong.

and then oli meets pearl - and a new hope for his fortune blossoms.
