Hemispherical Combustion Chambers Weren't Just a Gimmick: The Chrysler Hemi engine is renowned for its hemispherical combustion chambers, which provide an efficient shape with an excellent surface-to-volume ratio and minimal heat loss.
Three Generations: There have been three generations of Hemi engines: the FirePower series (1951-1958), the legendary 426 Hemi (1964-1971), and the modern Hemis (2003-2024).
FirePower Series: The first-generation Hemi, known as the FirePower series, had displacements ranging from 241 to 392 cubic inches and was produced from 1951 to 1958.
426 Hemi Nickname: The 426 Hemi, produced from 1964 to 1971, earned the nickname "elephant engine" due to its large size and heavy weight.
426 Hemi Power: The 426 Hemi was rated at 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, although actual dynamometer testing showed it could produce even more.
Racing Heritage: The 426 Hemi was initially developed for NASCAR racing and made its debut in the Plymouth Belvedere in 1964.
Street Hemi: Chrysler introduced the "Street Hemi" in 1966, making the powerful 426 Hemi available to the general public in various Dodge and Plymouth models.
426 Hemi in Drag Racing: The 426 Hemi dominated NHRA and AHRA drag racing, with its large casting allowing it to be overbored and stroked to displacements unattainable by other engines of the era.
426 Hemi in Iconic Cars: The 426 Hemi was used in some of the most iconic muscle cars, including the 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, the Dodge Charger Daytona, and the Plymouth Superbird.
High Compression: The 426 Hemi had a high compression ratio of 10.25:1 in the street version and 12.5:1 in the racing version, requiring high-octane fuel to avoid pre-ignition.
Dual Four-Barrel Carburetors: The 426 Hemi featured dual inline four-barrel Carter AFB carburetors, contributing to its high power output.
Advanced Rocker Arm Geometry: The Hemi engine's complex valve train and large, wide cylinder heads required advanced rocker arm geometry, making it more expensive and challenging to build.
Military Origins: Chrysler's experience with hemispherical combustion chambers began with their development of the XIV-2220 engine for the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft during World War II.
M47 Patton Tank: Chrysler also used hemispherical combustion chamber technology in the air-cooled AV-1790-5B V12 Hemi engine for the M47 Patton tank.
Modern Hemi Engines: The third-generation Hemi engines, produced from 2003 to 2024, featured advanced technologies and displacements between 5.7 and 6.4 liters, continuing the legacy of high performance.

Now that the forces of gentrification are at work in my humble community, I'm seeing all kinds of new people on the streets, when before it was just catalytic converter thieves. Community organizers, politicians, joggers, and dog walkers. It's that last one that really gets my goat.
You see, it's one thing if you walk a dog all the way from one place to the other. This new breed of dog walkers, though? Loads up their car with the dog, and drives approximately two blocks to the dog park to let them out. I got a real problem with that. That doesn't build sufficient oil pressure. It doesn't put enough heat in the engine. It's hard on the bores and the bearings and the cams. You're also beating the shit out of the battery starting this whole mess without letting it charge fully in this weather. It makes me sad.
Sure, if you're one of those hippie types, you can also argue that the cold-start emissions and low distance-to-fuel-spent ratio ratchet us ever closer to an irreversible climate apocalypse. That's true, sure, but the bigger problem is that it reduces the supply of viable junkyard engines I'll have to pick from in just a few decades. It's already hard enough trying to find iron block engines without excessive bore scoring; as soon as I start trying to throw Toyota 2GRs into my ancient Plymouth, it's going to be oil-burning city because all y'all couldn't be bothered to walk an extra two blocks with your dog.
Let's all try this again. When you walk your dog, walk your dog. He, she, or they are not gonna suffer from a few extra minutes of walking to bookend the five minutes of limp frisbee-tossing that you're going to treat them to at the dog park. It's better for the environment, and it's a lot better for the most important people on Earth: scavengers of long-destroyed internal combustion machinery who are too cheap to pay for a machine shop to clean up a two-hundred-dollar junkyard block.

The Anatomy of the 427 SOHC – Ford’s Answer to the HEMI that was banned from NASCAR and went drag racing.
What is the most feared engine ever to come out of Ford? A very subjective question – but the Boss 302, 427 Tunnel Port, Boss 429 come to mind. All these are candidates, but a lot of people would say that distinction belongs to the 427 SOHC. Mostly referred to as a 427 “Cammer” or “Sock”.
1964 was the year that Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 with the new Dodge 426 Hemi. Ford was running the 427 Hi-Riser that year and won the majority of NASCAR races. The writing was on the wall and the boys at Ford had to come up with an answer to the new Hemi. Within 90 days, Ford took what it learned from the 255ci Dual Overhead Cam Indy motor and applied it to the bulletproof 427ci FE motor. The displacements started at 332ci and grew to 428ci. The baddest of the bad of these were the 427’s and the King of the 427’s is the 427 SOHC!
The shortblock for the “cammer” was basically all 427 hi-riser. Ford wanted to keep the cost down by using as many off-the-shelf parts as it could. The crank was the 427 forged steel version that was cross-drilled at both the mains and rods. This crank with the steel hi-riser connecting rods and special “hemi-head” pistons was the ticket needed to live at 7500 rpms. Increased oil pressure and updated water pump helped to keep all fluids flowing no matter what the conditions were.
The main thing that drew your eyes to this motor was the massive valve covers, which were made from magnesium. One look and you knew that this was no ordinary engine. The heads were cast iron and wide. With a machined combustion chamber putting the compression ratio at 12.0:1. The intake ports were a “tunnel port” design that fed 2.25″ intake valves and through 1.90″ exhaust valves, gases exited out D shaped exhaust ports. Hollow stem intake valves were used and the exhaust valve stem were sodium filled to help control the heat that is generated at 7500 rpms.
The first public mention of the Cammer V8 appeared in the Daytona Beach Morning Journalon Feb. 23, 1964. Beaten up at Daytona all month by the new 426 Hemi engines from the Dodge/Plymouth camp, Ford officials asked NASCAR to approve an overhead-cam V8 the company had in the works. But as the Journal reports here, NASCAR boss Bill France turned thumbs down on Ford’s proposed engine. France regarded overhead cams and such to be European exotica, a poor fit with his down-home vision for Grand National stock car racing.
Even though France barred the SOHC V8 from NASCAR competition, Ford proceeded to develop the engine anyway, hoping to change Big Bill’s mind. In May of 1964, a ’64 Galaxie hardtop with a Cammer V8 installed was parked behind Gasoline Alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the assembled press corps could get a good look at it.
On October 19, 1964, NASCAR moved to ban all “special racing engines,” in its words, eliminating both the Cammer Ford and the Chrysler 426 Hemi from Grand National competition for 1965. Chrysler responded by temporarily withdrawing from NASCAR, while Ford continued on with its conventional 427 pushrod engine in NASCAR and took the SOHC engine to the drag strips.
Despite heavy lobbying from Ford, in December of 1965 NASCAR again banned the Cammer for 1966, with USAC piling on (Spartanburg Herald-Journal, December 18, 1965 above). However, in April of 1966 NASCAR finally relented. Sort of. Okay, not really. The Cammer was now allowed, technically, but only in the full-size Galaxie model, limited to one small four-barrel carb, and with an absurd, crippling weight handicap: nearly 4400 lbs, 430 lbs more than the Dodge and Plymouth hemis. At that point Ford said no thanks and dedicated the Cammer to drag racing. The engine never turned a lap in NASCAR competition.
Ford made the Cammer widely available in the drag world, providing engine deals to nitro racers Tom Hoover, Pete Robinson, Connie Kallita, and a host of others. Among the most successful Cammer-equipped drag cars were the 1966-67 Comet flip-top funny cars (Don Nicholson, Eddie Schartman, et. al.) and Mickey Thompson’s dominating ’69 Mustang team starring Danny Ongais and Pat Foster.

English, dead carrier s/on @0358z then ID@0359z pips and newsroom preview. @0401z World News anchored by Neil Nunes. The leaders of Italy and Germany have strongly rejected ceasefire terms laid out by Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine, as scores of countries gathered at a two-day summit in Switzerland to discuss ending the conflict. A draft declaration issued at the summit reaffirms Ukraine's territorial integrity and unambiguously rejects any nuclear threat against the country. More than 90 countries and global institutions are attending the event. It is the biggest gathering for Ukraine since the full-scale invasion. But Russia was not invited, and China, a key ally of Russia, is not attending, so expectations of significant progress at this stage are low. Thousands of people have staged a protest in Tel Aviv to demand the Israeli government do more to secure the release of the hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza. The weekly protests also have an anti-government element, with many demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu call fresh elections and make way for a successor. Eight Israeli soldiers were killed in a blast in southern Gaza on Saturday, Israel’s military said, the deadliest incident for the army in the war since January. The soldiers were in an armoured vehicle that was hit by a major explosion that, according to a preliminary investigation, detonated explosive “engineering material”, the army said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had paid "a heart-rending price in our just war in defense of our homeland", but said his country would continue fighting this war "to ensure our existence and our future". Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has accepted an invitation to visit the Pentagon, according to a statement released by a Pentagon spokesperson Saturday. China Premier Li Qiang kicked off his four-day visit to Australia on Sunday by announcing Beijing would provide a new pair of pandas to Australia's Adelaide Zoo after the current pair returns to China later this year. New Caledonia’s main international airport will reopen from Monday after being shut last month during a spate of deadly unrest, the high commission in the French Pacific territory said, adding a curfew would also be reduced. North Korea's military has been building roads and walls inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates it from the South. Northern Nigeria’s largest city Kano has sparked outrage after police banned its famed Durbar festival because of a dispute between two traditional royals. Kano has been on edge since the squabble erupted between the two rival emirs, who both claim the right to the traditional throne in the city. The incumbent was sacked by the state assembly and his predecessor was reappointed by the state governor, sparking a legal battle between the two emirs. Eight people have been injured after a shooter opened fire at a water park in a Detroit suburb where families gathered to escape the summer heat, authorities say. At least two of the victims were children, officials said. The suspected gunman has died by his own hand, police say. @0406z "The Newsroom" begins. New Post has been published on https://fastmusclecar.com/the-american-muscle-car-winning-british-touring-car-racing/best-muscle-cars/
The American Muscle Car Winning British Touring Car Racing
For years, the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) was dominated by Jaguars. From the legendary Mk1 and Mk2 saloons to Stirling Moss’s victory in a Mk7 at the 1952 Daily Express International Trophy meeting, a Jaguar was the clear choice if you wanted to win a race outright when the series began in 1958. But that all changed on May 11th, 1963. When Jack Sears arrived at Silverstone with a Ford Galaxie, an American buil V8 machine from the world of NASCAR, it signalled the start of an era where American V8 power was the norm at the front of the field for over a decade.
The Galaxie quickly proved itself to be a formidable force. Despite the presence of renowned drivers Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori, Sears blew past the leading Jaguars on Hangar Straight when he hit 135mph and disappeared out of sight. He went on to win the 12-lap race by an incredible 20 seconds, setting a new lap record and even outrunning the brand-new 1100cc Mini Cooper S driven by John Whitmore.
At the end of May, a non-championship race at Aintree cemented the Galaxie’s dominance, with Sears again taking first place. Finally, at Crystal Palace, the next round of the BTCC, Sears and Gawaine Baillie’s Galaxie cruised past Salvadoi and Hill once again, proving that it wasn’t just fast and at home on a straight but could also take on more twisty, technical tracks.
Naturally, the Galaxie didn’t come without its fair share of controversy. Questions were raised about the legality of the American build, which resulted in alterations that weakened the car’s roll-cage and had to be reverted back to drum brakes after the Royal Automobile Club refused to let them run discs on the front. But even with these changes, the Ford still came out on top.
Sears took first place again at Snetterton in a non-championship bout and followed this up with another 1-2 finish alongside Baillie at Silverstone in the Grand Prix support race. Jim Clark eventually ended Sears’ winning streak at Brands Hatch in August, but even then it was a Galaxie, run by Alan Brown.
It was clear that the Americans had changed the game forever. Autosport remarked at the end of the season that nothing could keep up with the two cars and looked forward to the “splendid spectacle” that the American muscle cars provided.
60 years later and the American muscle cars continue to shape the BTCC, and in many ways, motorsport as a whole. The Ford Galaxie ushered in a new era of V8 domination, and set the wheels in motion for a new level of racing excitement. From its very first race, the American muscle car had proven itself capable of challenging the best and leaving its mark on the BTCC for generations to come.
The immediate success of the Ford Galaxie sparked a wave of enthusiasm for American muscle cars in the BTCC, with other iconic vehicles such as the Dodge Charger, Plymouth Barracuda and Chevrolet Camaro quickly becoming staples of the series. These cars provided a unique challenge to the touring car drivers of the time, incorporating aspects of stock car racing with the demands of a traditional road course. This new style of racing emerged as a precursor to the regulations used today in a range of racing categories, which blend traditional touring car elements with those of sports car and stock car formats.
Alongside their performance on the track, the American muscle cars also became legendary for their showmanship. The powerful V8s produce an unmistakable roar and the engines had to be frequently replaced due to the intense heat they generated. Carrying a wide array of liveries, the American muscle cars also drew in large crowds of enthusiasts who would watch them thunder around the circuit.
The impact of the American muscle car on the BTCC can still be seen to this day. As the series has grown, so too has the technology and regulations allowing for more powerful machines capable of handling the diverse circuits the championship visits. With the current regulations allowing for larger displacement engines, the American muscle car legacy is more relevant than ever.
From the Mustang Mach 1 of 1969 to the Dodge Charger and various Raysees and Chevrolets, American muscle cars continued to remain an influence on the BTCC throughout the following decade. These cars were consistently quick just like the Galaxie and allowed drivers to display their own individual style.
By the late 1970s, the American muscle cars had been supplanted by more modern cars. But that doesn’t mean their legacy was forgotten. The presence of these cars in the BTCC continues to inspire future generations of racers and the fact that they’ve risen to fame in the world of motorsport remains a testament to their enduring impact.
Even today, the American muscle car remains a popular choice for fans of the series and drivers alike. Drivers such as Matt Neal, Tom Chilton and Tom Oliphant have found success and fame with their American-built machines, bringing the spirit of the original Galaxie back to BTCC.
The legacy of the American muscle car in British Touring Car Racing can’t be overstated. From its introduction in 1963 until now, the cars have left their mark on the series and paved the way for further innovation in motorsport. With each new generation of cars, the influence of the American muscle car shows no sign of fading, and as long as BTCC continues to race, we’ll be sure to see some American muscle cars out on the track.

There are a variety of AC units available, and some will be more efficient than others, but the best-case scenario is they’re electric, and until our electricity grid is 100% renewable, all energy use is exacerbating climate change. Most units will be ejecting hot air into the urban spaces between the buildings, so you are heating up the outdoors and increasing discomfort for anyone in the line of your hot exhaust, including people outside and people desperately trying to get some fresh air in through their windows.
Almost all systems use refrigerants that are extremely potent greenhouse gases. Also, as with all electrical equipment, AC units include rare Earth metals that leave a wake of devastating social and ecological harm through their extraction and processing.
There are other, well-established solutions we can turn to. If you can, retrofit your home to make it more comfortable year-round with loft insulation (it works both ways!), external shading (such as shutters), painting external walls and flat roofs in pale colours that reflect the sun’s energy back out, and planting deciduous trees in front of south-facing windows that provide free shading in the summer that conveniently disappears in winter. Quicker fixes include closing windows when it’s hotter outside than inside to trap more cool air, closing blinds and curtains or fashioning external shades, and reducing heat by turning everything off standby.
For new-build homes or deep retrofits, we need to apply principles of passive design such as treating facades differently depending on whether they face north, east, south or west, introducing overhangs, especially on south-facing facades, positioning windows and organising layouts to allow cross-flow ventilation, and of course, external shutters. In the UK we’ve not typically built our homes with shutters since glass became the preferred material for holes in walls, but maybe it’s time they made a comeback. Wouldn’t towns and cities resplendent with beautiful, colourful, shutters be preferable to a melted wasteland with a few fortresses decorated with condenser units?
There is of course a place for air conditioning in our built environment, especially in care settings. But the solution is definitely not a glut of individual, inefficient AC units. Rather the solutions must be large-scale and infrastructural, such as heat pumps connected to fifth-generation heat networks – a recent pilot in Plymouth allowed users to both import and export heat into the network, improving efficiency and sharing of resources.
Fundamentally, this comes down to short-term individual solutions versus longer-term collective action. How can we culturally adapt to our new climate? How can employers offer more flexibility? How can the construction industry (including AC manufacturers and installers) be encouraged to maximise passive – non-power-sucking or chemical-burning – measures before relying on active cooling? How can the government offer good advice, resources and grants to retrofit all our homes for long-term sustainability? How can we learn from indigenous technologies that better incorporate collective management of resources and collaborate with natural systems? For example, the subak irrigation system in Bali, which collectively manages steep terraces of rice paddies with a network of channels that distribute cooling water while facilitating healthy nutrient cycling and organic pest control.

So-called motorcylists love to shove their beloved bikes away whenever there's a little bit of snow on the road. That's because motorcyclists are famously concerned with their public perception. They don't want to drive around town with wood screws run through their tires, shrieking profanities at stopped traffic before ripping a perfect 12 'o' clocker and driving across the iced-over multi-use-pathway, comfortable in their knowledge that the police will not and can not follow. Or it's because they don't have heated grips, and their handsies get cold.
Heated steering wheels are the single greatest innovation in cars in the last two hundred years. Unfortunately for me, they hadn't been installed into cars of the age I own. In the late 1970s, the newest innovation in steering wheel comfort was "maybe make them a little smaller, for the ladies." Seems like I was cursed to a lifetime of wondering if my thermostat was seized, freezing to death even through many layers of mittens and work gloves while waiting for the tow truck to arrive and clean up the commuters in front of me.
Of course, Plymouth also didn't equip this car with a lot of other modern features. For instance, liquid-cooled active speed laser and radar jamming was not available. Active pursuit drones pre-programmed with a seek-and-destroy order for all speed cameras were not yet on the market, unless you worked for the CIA. And also the good people of China had not figured out how to make $35 45-millimetre ball-bearing turbochargers capable of adding nearly four hundred horsepower to any engine strong enough to keep its guts on the inside when presented with one medium-sized jet engine's worth of boost. I had to add all those things myself.
Easy, right? Run some wires to a heating element on the steering wheel. There's just one complication: steering wheels turn. If I keep spinning the car left and right, eventually the wire will get tangled up and rip itself out, causing an electrical fire. Admittedly, that will also keep my hands warm, but the walk home after is inconvenient.
The original "engineers" who took a whisky-soaked gander at this car before slapping their secretaries on the ass had a solution, though. In every steering wheel, the horn button has the same problem. Unfortunately for me, the horn hasn't worked in this car since 1983, which complicated my attempts to reuse the wiring.
Ultimately, I came up with what a rocket scientist would call "a compromise." A pair of bolt cutters and a map to the local truck-supply warehouse's storage yard soon provided me with a nifty diesel-fired interior heater, a roaring flame that consumes all and produces enough heat to make toast from three feet away. Ratchet-strapped to the place where the passenger seat used to be, it will keep my fingers warm, as well as my feet and every other part of my body. Sure, it's inconvenient having to continually refill it with stolen farm diesel, and I could have run the exhaust pipe out of the cabin a better way than through the rust hole in the floor. Once you get that heated seat feeling, though, you simply can't go back. If you'll excuse me, I need to get going: if I don't get to work in the next five minutes, my boots will melt again.
