What i say: I'm fine
What i mean:
holy fuck Harry Mason's notebook in Silent Hill 3 fills me with so much pure sadness. like holy shit the horrors this man had to endure while raising a child he was genuinely afraid of. like this child could very well be an eldritch horror ready to unleash itself on the world and harry would never truly know. he felt like an awful person for feeling so conflicted about Heather but he quite literally KILLED FOR HER. I;M SOBBING FUCKKK THESE LINES FUCK ME UP SO HARD
I confess I had reservations at first about raising that baby.
Could I love her?
Her existence was thoroughly unexplainable.
I thought, 'She could be that young woman who snatched away my beloved daughter.'
That led to sadness, anger... there were times when I put my hands around her tiny little throat.
Several times I even considered abandoning her.
That's what a terrible person I am.
But I decided to raise her after all.
I just couldn't seem to let her go.
When she... when you look at me, you laugh, so...Even now, I can't forget about that girl.
But I love you.
I have no doubts about that.
That's all I ask you to believe.

Top 10 Spinoffs that really need to happen
Hi, friends. I may not be a fan of cheap sequels or prequels we don't want, I do think spinoffs are underrated especially if they focus on characters that are beloved and have interesting stories to tell. I mean, look at the success of Star Wars' many series especially its two diamonds being Clone Wars and Andor. I was inspired to make this list after seeing the trailer of Daryl Dixon.
In this list, I will my top ten medias that could it even bigger if they make these specific spinoffs.
Tumblr media
Marvel's War Machine (Film/TV Series) - Nevermind Riri. Let's focus on this guy who was not only around long before her, but since the beginning. In time where we want more black representation than ever, I think War Machine is should be the next big thing. War Machine aka James Ruper "Rhodey" Rhodes is a decorated soldier to begin and Iron Man's right hand man. Despite the similar gimmick, his personality is much more serious, professional and mannerly. He can hold out on his own and he is a hero anyone of any type can look up to.
Tumblr media
2. Marvel's Mary Jane Watson (Mini Series) - While she started off as Gwen Stacey's replacement and would alter become Peter Parker's main woman, she has now come quite into her own. She has even gone on adventures of her own, has become more capable and even became an ally in action for Spider-Man. While the comics have gone sour, maybe TV can bring us back MJ and Spidey as not only a couple, but as equals who both have exciting stories to tell.
Tumblr media
3. Marvel's (REAL) Spider-Girl (TV Series/Film) - Speaking of TV redeeming MJ and Spidey as soul mates, last I remember, at one point, they were not only happily married, they had a daughter Mayday Parker who had the mantle passed down to her long before Miles Morales, the other Gwen Stacey (Spider-Woman) and all these other modern incarnations. She is a very underrated heroine who fell into obscurity no thanks to how Marvel broke up one of its most iconic couples. She needs to make a comeback because she is the true Spider-Girl in every way possible,
Tumblr media
4. Disney's Goofy kid's show (TV Series) - For a while, the Disney gang made a big comeback since Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and almost everyone got their own spinoff or reboot. Everyone, but Goofy which I find is a waste because unlike all the others with the exception of Pete, he actually is a father. So far, the only independent works Goofy has gotten are Goof Troop, the two Goofy Movies and two animated shorts in some holidays specials. I think Goofy can make for a great host in a kid's show because despite his goofiness, he is a very capable and in fact, wise father. He would be a lot like Mr. Rogers or Mr. Dress Up where instead just playing with kids, he's actually teaching them and even comforting them the way a father does.
Tumblr media
5. Resident Evil's Billy Coen (Video Game) - I don't think there's an RE fan out there who hasn't wished to see what became of this beloved one off character. Between you and me, I think he's still alive and kicking zombie, and I would love see what became of him after RE0. He not only came from one of the few prequel media out there that was great, but he is a total badass with a compelling backstory. We even got to see what happened to Sherry Birkin later one. I think Billy is more than worth a chance in the spotlight.
Tumblr media
6. Silent Hill's Heather Mason (Video Game) - I know what you're thinking, but hear me out. While she got her own game (technically, two if you count the first ever SH game), I don't believe her story should have ended with SH3. The Mason family is the closest thing to a true SH main protagonist as there is I would love to her a now adult Heather Mason still fighting the Order as it is still out there wreaking havoc. She was a great heroine and an underrated video game character in general.
Tumblr media
7. Jurassic Park for grown ups (TV Series) - It's had a few spinoffs so far and the only that is a big hit is Camp Cretaceous. I think another one should be made and this time, it should be aimed for adults. In the beginning, JP showed a lot of promise when it came to making adult oriented spinoffs with the comics and the sequel The Lost World, but after that, it became more and more about the action and less about the horror factor and dinosaurs. Even the revival trilogy of Jurassic World lacked that horror element that adults appreciated in the first two movies and most importantly, the book. We need to make a spinoff that is aimed for grown ups without it feeling like it wants to be Indiana Jones.
Tumblr media
8. DC's Batgirl (TV Series) - Nevermind Batwoman, Batgirl was around first AND she was solo before joining the bat family officially. I mean, even her father Jim Gordon got his own spinoff series before she did and she's actually a super. And apparently, her film never saw the light of day because it was not up to standard. I say, we make a TV series that does live up to standard AND we make it animated like we did Harley Quinn. Barbara Gordon set the standard for a lot lady supers came after her and she iconic. EVERYONE knows who Batgirl is. Even people who don't read comics know who Batgirl is. What I don't know is why she hasn't starred in her own solo media yet beyond comics.
Tumblr media
9. DC's Catwoman (Film/TV Series) - Speaking of iconic DC heroines, it is funny how one of its most iconic anti-heroines, love interest's to Batman and just recently, bisexual supers still hasn't gotten any independent media beyond her comics. If there's one woman who doesn't need no Batman (let alone man in general) to stand on her own two feet and have a compelling story to tell, it's her. The only thing we have gotten are two films. One which is imposter media starring Halle Berry and another no one knows about. Seline Kyle deserves so much more than that. I say she gets her own proper show or at the very least, a proper film. She's worth it.
Tumblr media
10. Capcom's Dino Crisis (Video Game) - I think this franchise only got one spinoff (two if you count the third instalment that went off the rails), and it wasn't a hit. Dino Crisis was clearly inspired by the original Jurassic Park especially when it came to horror and the feeling of being genuinely threatened by the dinosaurs. This game felt like the long lost twin sister of RE. With that said, it should get a spinoff because it's worth a last hurrah and who knows? It mind revive this lost gem of a series. I say we go for it and put our best foot forward doing it. Let it be true to the lore, the setting and theme. None of the dinos in space silliness.
Anyway, that is my list. What is your opinion on it? Would you like to see these spinoffs or can you suggest another? Let me know.
Thanks for reading and as always, stay safe.

Ok, since I beat Silent Hill 3 last night and posted some first impressions a while back, I felt like it would be good to post my thoughts about Silent Hill 3 now that I have beaten the game. This will contain spoilers. Also, possibly more concerningly, my opinions. Feel free to agree or disagree with everything I express here. And remember, death threats belong in my asks, not the notes.
I also compare with Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 a lot, just FYI.
Firstly, the positives:
The atmosphere: It’s an early Silent Hill game, these games are amazing at creating spooky and unsettling atmospheres.
The horror elements: SH3 (like the other Silent Hill games I have played) shows a lot of restraint with its horror, its use of sound is exceptional in this regard. There are several areas in which the sounds alone make you feel like you’re in danger, with lots of banging, knocking, creaking, and growling which made me feel like something was about to jump out at me, Which is even better when you consider the fact that nothing ever actually does. You would think that I’d grow used to it and just ignore it, but I never did. This may have something to do with the fact I used headphones, and sometimes had to take them off to make sure that the sounds were actually coming from the game. That shit made my skin crawl and it really got into my head, which is awesome. The visuals are also top notch in this regard, scenes like the one in the Mirror room in Brookhaven Hospital are ones I’m not likely to forget anytime soon.
I like how it ties into Silent Hill 1, it was interesting to see that story continued, and a lot of the references landed. I do worry that this could make the story difficult to follow for somebody who skipped Silent Hill 1 though.
Heather Mason/Cheryl Mason/Alessa Gillespie is a great and very endearing protagonist. She has a lot more personality than her adoptive father Harry Mason ever did. However, protagonists are still only parts of larger narratives, I have some mixed feelings on this element of the game, I’ll talk more about that later.
Symbolism: Silent Hill 2 is partially so beloved due to its use of symbolism, all the monsters represent something about James himself, and the town of Silent Hill itself becomes a mirror for James, his guilt, his fears, and his desire for punishment for his actions. Silent Hill 3 doesn’t do anything nearly as deep as this, but it still contains symbolism in some of its enemies. Unfortunately, not all the creatures have definitive symbolism, which is a letdown, but the fact that there are still lots of enemies who represent things about Heather/Cheryl/Alessa is still pretty cool. And the Wheelchair imagery from the other games is still present.
Puzzles: Many of the Puzzles in Silent Hill 3 felt a little more intuitive than the ones in 1 and 2. I appreciate that. Not all of them, but most of them, and I think that’s a good change.
I really appreciate how the game used a lot of new environments, such as the mall/shopping centre, the train station, the construction site, and the office building. I just think it’s refreshing to see new places, and it makes revisiting old locations such as Brookhaven Hospital and Heaven’s Night from Silent Hill 2, and the Lakeside Amusement Park from Silent Hill feel a lot more impactful when they do show up.
This section was originally part of the symbolism paragraph, but it grew so fucking large that I had to make it it’s own section:
One big thing I want to talk about is the use of religious aesthetics usually associated with Christianity and Catholicism in SH3, because I think that element of the game is fascinating. (The religion of Silent Hill 3 isn’t Christianity, but even the game itself acknowledges its use of Christian symbolism through a readable book that states that Silent Hills religion changed a lot due to the influence of Christianity) When Christianity is usually involved in horror (especially western horror) it takes the form of religious horror focused on either narratives of satanic possession or “good people” being tempted by sin, or the inverse approach where god is evil and good people face the threat of fire, brimstone, and eternal damnation.
Silent Hill 3 doesn’t really do either of these. Silent Hill 3 is a Japanese horror game, and Japan is a nation in which Christianity is considered foreign, and evil christian (often catholic) coded religious organisations are a common media trope. The aesthetics of Christianity are used within this context, Christianity is not used as a sort of “default religion” like it is in Western media, it is used specifically as a religion that is understood as being strange, alien, and possibly dangerous. When Claudia talks about “Gods unending love and mercy”, “people being saved from their sin”, and “Gods eternal paradise”, it is supposed to be strange and ominous, and for an audience that isn’t used to those ideas being a part of religion it probably is (and they still are for an audience that is, probably just in a different way). I just think this is a really interesting element of the game. One thing I think a lot of Silent Hill fans find really endearing about the early Silent Hill games is the fact that despite being set in the US, they can still be just so unbelievably Japanese at times.
Like, Midwich Elementary School looks like the kind of American school you would see in a movie from the outside, BECAUSE IT IS! Only in looking things up while writing this did I learn that the look of Midwich Elementary School was likely based heavily on the school from the movie Kindergarten Cop, because Team Silent wanted their school to look American, and they used that film as reference. But in spite of that, the layout and floorplan of Midwich just still feels so Japanese. It’s legitimately amazing, I love it so much.
Things I have mixed opinions on:
While I like Silent Hill 3’s OST, at this point in time I feel like I prefer Silent Hill 2’s. This isn’t to say that the SH3 OST is bad, it certainly isn’t, it just didn’t have the same impact on me as the SH2 OST did. Maybe it will grow on me though. I hope it does.
While there were some parts of the story that were awesome (like Heather vomiting up God, only for Claudia to fucking deep throat the aborted fetus of God so she could give birth to her herself.) I have some problems with how Silent Hill 3 handled its narrative. I’m signposting this here to say that I did enjoy the game’s story, but I also think it was far from perfect, and I’m gonna critique it a fair bit later. I just want it to be clear that I don’t hate it, I just think it could have been a fair bit better.
The bosses: everybody who has played a Silent Hill game is probably aware that the bosses can be a little stinky sometimes, bosses are not Silent Hill’s forte, and I don’t think anybody would claim that they are. However, some bosses in SH3 like the Missionary weren’t actually that bad, and were in fact incredibly passable. However, some other bosses, like the Split Worm, were extra stinky and kind of sucked.
Now it’s time to get negative (Remember, all death threats go to my ask box):
Why is it such a straight line? One of the elements of Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 2 that I really enjoyed was actually running around Silent Hill. Even though those games were structured in a linear manner, you didn’t travel through them in a straight line like you do in Silent Hill 3. You traveled from location to location within Silent Hill, by moving through the town of Silent Hill itself. You pass by the same landmarks, occasionally run through the same streets, and overall while there is always somewhere you have to go to progress the story, you actually have to find your way there. You can frequently backtrack, and the only times you can’t are at the end of both games or when you are in a nightmare version of an area. Silent Hill 3 is a straight line, and I kind of hate that. All the areas themselves were cool, but you just kind of passed through each one, you never go back, and you never get to just travel and explore the place where you were. Silent Hill 3 feels so unbelievably railroaded in comparison to 1 and 2. And I found that really disappointing. Even when you get to Silent Hill you are given only an illusion of being able to do what you could in the town in the first two games. In reality, the chunk of Silent Hill we get presented with is a fancy entrance to Brookhaven Hospital that contains a cute reference in the form of Heavens night, and a big invisible door blocking you from going to the Lakeside Amusement Park until the game lets you. You get two streets to run around in and pretend you get to go somewhere yourself instead of just being driven there on the games invisible tracks. Hooray.
Why is the story paced like that? Legit the story itself isn’t that bad, but it feels bad for a huge chunk of the game because of how it’s paced. More than half the game is legitimately just “Heather goes home”. A little bit of story stuff happens at the beginning, and then there feels like there’s just a huge glut of fuck all smack bang in the middle of the game until everything starts happening at the end. Now look, when things do start happening it gets much better, but I’ve always been a firm believer in the fact that if I have to wait for your story to “get good” , than your story has a massive fucking issue that you need to fix as soon as you possibly can. The games pacing is bad.
The cast of major characters is incredibly small (there are only 4 characters who actually physically appear without also being dead), and even then it feels like half of them don’t get enough screen-time to matter. Douglas Cartland and Vincent Smith seem cool, but we barely even get to see them. It’s disappointing when your game’s cast mainly consists of 4 characters, 2 of which don’t get enough screen-time, when your game also contains a big chunk of nothing (of major narrative impact) as it’s middle. When you compare the cast of SH3 to the cast of SH2, a lot of these problems with SH3 become really apparent. Especially considering that these pacing issues are pretty unique to Silent Hill 3, and the fact that Silent Hill 3 also has the shortest story and least characters who are part of the main cast (from memory) out of the 3 games I’ve mentioned.
I wish they did more with Harry Mason, he’s literally just fridge stuffing in SH3. They had the chance to give him some actual personality, and yet they just didn’t. Huge missed opportunity IMO.
I died more to falling off of ledges than I did to the enemies themselves, this was not an issue I faced in SH 1 or 2. I personally am not sure if this is a real problem with the game or if it’s just a skill issue on my part. I’m not sure I’ll ever know. Fuck all those ledges though.
Concluding thoughts:
Silent Hill 3 is a good game, and after having written all this out it’s pretty clear that there are more things I like about the game than there are things I dislike. But also, the things I didn’t like REALLY bothered me. I’m actually about to start a play-through of Silent Hill 4: The Room. And I get the feeling that I’m either going to like it a lot or I’m going to despise it. It seems like it is also quite railroad-y. But honestly having the Apartment acting as a kind of hub space I always return too might be enough to make me ok with that. It’s going to be interesting no matter what though.
Also, I can see now why Silent Hill 2 is widely agreed to be the best Silent Hill game. That topic has already been done to death though, so I won’t get into it. If you’ve read through this whole thing than feel some slight satisfaction in knowing that you are likely the only person other than myself to ever have done so.

My friend came over and beat Silent Hill 3. Considering we played 2 over a decade ago and 1 I think two or four years ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy for comparisons but I don't think I'm far off. My buddy knew the first two installments very well and finished them easily, but even though he was less acquainted with 3, he still managed to beat it in about four hours. So that should give you an indication on how short it is. Not that Silent Hill games are lengthy, but I feel this was a bit of a rushed installment.
Let me elaborate. By no means is 3 a bad game, but it lacks the complexity and nuance of its predecessors. Here's an example. Upon entering the hospital, the protagonist Heather can find a note with a doll from a dude named Stanley Coleman, and throughout the level more notes will reveal his obsession with her and that he's watching her movements. Eventually the player can learn the boss of this level killed Coleman and you can actually find his body in the morgue, making choking noises. The whole situation is creepy because we're currently in a hellscape where there shouldn't be any cognizant people, yet Coleman was able to observe the player unnoticed. Yes, that's Silent Hill-esque, but that's where that subplot ends. He never comes up again, and honestly when my friend played he never completed Coleman's storyline and I had to learn a lot of what I typed here from watching a youtube video. I think if this took place in 1 or 2, Coleman would be interwoven much better into the general plot instead of being this one-off event.
That's just one example but the whole game feels like that. Considering there's only one ending (yeah, OK, there's the aliens and such, but only one canon ending), it really limits the player to a linear path, whereas in even the PS1 game you had many different choices with how to handle the situation as Harry Mason. I think the developers were leaning more on trying to create that weird Silent Hill ambiance without the substance that would make me question the myself and the situation. Another example is noise. All of the games use it to frighten the player, but 3 really oversaturated it to the point it was no longer useful to discern if there are enemies in the area, nor did it scare me as much.
However there were some really great aspects to the game. Heather herself is actually an amazing protagonist. Yeah, OK, for some reason she was a shittier fighter than Mason or James Sunderland, but in terms of personality she's great. One criticism I'd give the previous games—even the much-beloved Silent Hill 2—is the conversations were stilted and unnatural. Maybe it was 90s and early 2000s terrible translations and voice acting, but whenever there was a cutscene sometimes I could no longer suspend disbelief. If I found myself in this nightmare world with demons, and I stumbled upon one seemingly normal person, I would not be entertaining whatever random tangents this person wants to talk about. I'd just be hyping over and over that we need to stick together and figure a battleplan to survive. Heather leans more heavily towards my instinct, and her conversations often follow the themes of who the hell are you, what the hell is going on, and if you're responsible for this get away from me. Also whoever animated her face deserves all the accolades. This game out in 2003 and we played with the original disc in my PS2, and holy shit I think her expressions look better than some modern games today twenty years later. I can easily perceive every single one of her emotions from skepticism to fear to anger... It's all there.
My friend told me this is the last of the original development team and afterward it goes downhill, so probably this is the last Silent Hill for me. I'm glad he was able to play for me because it was truly delight even though I hated every single moment of it.

( ๐_๐) I’m so used to Silent Hill enemies moving kinda slow the Missionary startled me.
The Missionary during our fight: https://youtu.be/ukQGjYLr1AE?si=t0a7d4O4T7G1H028
“Dad . . . You told me you were the strongest man in the world . . . Liar.” - Heather.

“I confess I had reservations at first about raising that baby. Could I love her? Her existence was throughly unexplainable. I thought, “she could be that young woman who snatched away my beloved daughter.” That lead to sadness, anger . . . there were times when I put my hands around her tiny, little throat. Several times I even considered abandoning her. That’s what a terrible person I am. But I decided to raise her after all. I just couldn’t seem to let her go. When she . . . When you look at me, you laugh, so . . . Even now I can’t forget about that girl. But I love you. I have no doubts about that. That’s all I ask you to believe. To my precious daughter . . .” - Harry Mason.
(。 •́︿•̀。 ) I’m blown away by how well Heather and Harry’s characters and their relationship have been written. Especially with how much they were able to expand upon Harry’s character with one book.
