But yeah my thoughts on season 3 in general, I enjoyed it. Tbh it didn’t hit quite as hard as the last two seasons but it was still fun and well adapted. Although I was definitely waiting for that moment on the ferris wheel so I was bummed out when it didn’t happen. It was just such a powerful and memorable moment in the comics that it felt really wrong to butcher it like that. I hope they can do it justice in the next season when they finally delve deeper into Tori’s storyline (crossing my fingers that it actually gets renewed!!!! I’m actually starting to worry tbh…)
Honestly my only other thing I didn’t love about this season is that there is so. much. god. damn. kissing. I felt really fatigued after a while of watching the characters making out all the time. Like I get that it’s a romance and all but seriously…that’s just my opinion though and it’s coming from someone who has almost no semblance of a sex drive rn 😅
Things I loved about the season - I think they did a great job of adapting Charlie’s storyline and treating that subject matter respectfully. I was relieved when Nick’s aunt showed up in place of Sarah and she did a great job of filling in that spot. Hopefully Olivia Colman is available for next season 🤞🤞🤞
The adaptation of this winter in episode 5 was really good too. I loved seeing more of Tori this season and Michael was great too. I liked the way they played out Imogen’s story and the way they incorporated Kizzy’s gender identity into Darcy’s character. As always, the sets, costumes and attention to detail on the show is spot on.
That’s all from me, I’m so glad Heartstopper comic is back because it’s at least a little something to fill the Heartstopper-shaped hole in my heart ❤️

A lot of us Heartstopper fans are worried that Netflix isn’t going to renew it for a 4th Season. They have a history of cancelling super popular shows after a couple of seasons, and sometimes just after one season (like “Dead Boy Detectives”). We’re worried because the first season stayed in Netflix’s Top Ten for many months, and the second season stayed there for at least a month. It hasn’t even been a week since the third season premiered and it debuted at number 4, then slid to number 6 two days later, and now it’s slid to number 10. I’m wondering if there’s something we all can do (besides constantly streaming it 24/7 of course) to signal boost the series to non-fans and casual fans? Thoughts?
Truthfully I don't think there is anything we can do. From what I understand the viewership numbers don't matter to Netflix nearly as much as bringing in new subscribers. The 3rd or 4th season of a show is way less likely to bring in new subs than a brand new show will. That's no guarantee either as you said because DBD didn't get renewed but I think they are more willing to take a risk on a new show over renewing an established show at this point. Getting new people to watch the show or sign up for netflix can't hurt but it's far from a guarantee. I would love to see more Heartstopper and I hope it gets renewed but I'm not very confident it will happen.

alright I’ll admit it, I’m getting nervous for the future of the show.
I’ve been comparing the stats to Heartstopper because it’s also a Netflix UK show and they got two more seasons with their viewership but the drop for Lockwood today is making me uneasy.
In comparison, Lockwood has much better viewership hours overall but in its third week Heartstopper only dropped about 38% in viewership whereas Lockwood just dropped approximately 61% which is not good at all. The completion rates for Lockwood have also been higher since it’s release but I don’t know how this drop will effect its chances at another season.
In the three weeks of top ten, Heartstopper had 14.5 million -> 23.9 million -> 14.9 million
Tumblr media
Lockwoods current three weeks of top ten had 25.1 million -> 39.4 million -> 15.3 million
Tumblr media
I want to believe in the cast, in Joe and in Complete Fiction’s hope for a renewal but Netflix has burned us before. All I can say is don’t stop posting about it and telling people to watch it.

Recently Ludivine Sagnier (Claire) gave an interview to AlloCiné and was asked about what was going on with Lupin and a potential Part 4:
My translation:
"'It's always difficult to take the risk and renew. The way shows work, a second season habitually does a little less well than the first, and the third a little less well than the one before it. There is this fear of disappointing, which might push back the due date. But I'm proud to be in it. I find it hard to imagine, the figures surpass those of the French box office. I really love being by Omar's side. The series is joyful and entertaining, and anyway the viewers deserve a last little season...' she concludes with a mischievous smile."
Because, much like Guédira, I'm a sicko, I'm going to go through this line by line in an attempt to decode it.
"It's always difficult to take the risk and renew. The way shows work, a second season habitually does a little less well than the first, and the third a little less well than the one before it."
This is objectively true, though at a certain point you probably achieve a viewership base that will continuously return. Part 3 had 50 million completed viewings in the relevant 13-week period that Netflix tracks these things, which ranked something like third or fourth for the second half of 2023. While lower than Part 1 and Part 2, that's still a very good score, particularly in light of the two-year gap. (For reference, Shadow and Bone, a show that was cancelled, only managed 25 million. I think Netflix usually likes things to be at least in the 35-40 million range, though small-budget shows like Heartstopper get more leeway.)
"There is this fear of disappointing, which might push back the due date."
The mention of a due date ("due date" or "deadline" being the best translations I could find for échéance) here is interesting. And getting really into the weeds, the fact that she used the phrase "fear of disappointing" rather than "fear of disappointment" is equally interesting. To me, this suggests that scripts are being worked on, but haven't been completed yet because...I guess they're being perfectionists because they don't want to disappoint the Netflix France bosses? This tracks with a few other pieces of evidence I collected:
an interview given by Soufiane Guerrab back in February in which he was asked about Lupin and said that "very nice things are coming" but that he couldn't talk any more about it
an article about French TV writers Florent Meyer and Tigran Rosine, who worked on Lupin early on, which asserted that they had "just gotten the direction of the writing back for the fourth season, in aid of Briton George Kay" (Kay being the creator and main writer)
Netflix's second-half-of-2023 viewership report which explicitly cited Lupin as an example of a good continuing show and made reference to its "first three parts"
Around the time Part 1 came out Ludivine Sagnier said that she'd had some input into the development of Claire as a character, and last year George Kay suggested in an interview with a Romanian newspaper see how far I go to find info here?? that she'd wanted to do more interesting things so they wrote that scene where she steals the book from the library. All of which is to say that she probably has some knowledge of what's going on in the writer's room but can't really confirm anything because of NDAs and such.
My overall theory here is that Netflix France isn't confirming any renewals until scripts are finished and approved. This tracks with the fact that Pax Massilia, a show I didn't see and don't really give a shit about, has been confirmed to be returning -- multiple times -- by its writer/director, but it hasn't been confirmed by Netflix France (in fact, back in the spring, they asserted they hadn't made any decisions yet; this was after the director had first made his claims, and he's gone on to make similar claims even after that). They recently had a changing of guard administratively so that might have something to do with it.
"But I'm proud to be in it. I find it hard to imagine, the figures surpass those of the French box office."
For reference, the highest grossing movie ever in France, Titanic, had 22.3 million admissions. Omar Sy's movie Intouchables had 19.5 million. So 50 million completed viewings obviously goes beyond that.
"I really love being by Omar's side."
Aww. She always talks about him really glowingly and seems like a very affectionate person in general.
"The series is joyful and entertaining, and anyway the viewers deserve a last little season..."
Unfortunately it probably would be the last season, though I guess you never really know for sure. But if they give everyone a nice send-off, I'd be cool with that.
They then editorialize and say that she had a "mischievous smile" while saying this as though it implies something, to which I'm like, have you seen what that woman looks like? She always smiles like that. But to be fair I don't know how mischievous it was because I wasn't there. (I am never beating the "has an embarrassing crush on Ludivine Sagnier" allegations because it's true)
Anyhow, if you got to the end of this...congratulations, I guess. Let's hope we get some concrete news sooner or later.

I’m not angry, you’re angry. Like I love Heartstopper but I’m tired of other shows getting renewed for two additional seasons at a time before audiences can even tell them that they would want more of that content through views and stuff. I wanna talk less about being angry about the cancellation and share the embroidery that I’ve been making for the show but I’ve literally stopped working on it bc I think in my mind, if I don’t finish it then the show wouldn’t actually be cancelled but ahhhhh!!!

I can tell you why this keeps happening, but you're not going to like it. I keep seeing posts like "oh, why do these lesbian shows keep getting cancelled, but the shows about BOYS KISSING get renewed?". And, you know, there's an answer. You won't like it, as mentioned, but I'll tell you. If you don't wanna know, just look at this gif of Lando instead.
Tumblr media
Okay, the first thing you have to realize is that gayboy shows have an unfair advantage: they aren't aimed at gay men. They're aimed at straight female yaoibunnies. This is why all gayboy shows and movies are created by women: Red White & Royal Blue, Heartstopper, Love Simon. All of 'em. Even Brokeback Mountain. It's all by and for horny women.
Tumblr media
Horny women, obviously, are a huge demographic. Fifty percent of the population. And, this is important, they're predisposed to like romance. Romance is cocaine to women. Gay romance is crack cocaine because they get to toss out the woman and throw in another pretty boy to replace her.
This is why you never see a gay movie about a bear, it's always twinks. Who do you think finds sexually nonthreatening boys, like, the hottest thing ever? Women and K-pop fans.
So a lesbian show will never do gayboy numbers, because it's only aimed at lesbians, while gayboy shows get to summon up a huge spirit-bomb of horny bitches.
But what about men, you might ask? Don't men like lesbians?
Well... they used to.
Years of girlboss feminism kinda poisoned the well. Not only are men generally not interested in romance because it's stupid and gay, but also these female-led shows tend to poorly plotted, politically preachy, and outright hostile to men. Especially straight white men, which is the biggest demographic there is next to horny bitches.
Most straight white male characters in these shows are portrayed about as well as an infomercial character.
Tumblr media
They're evil, incompetent, stupid, inept, oblivious, obnoxious, disrespected. Would you want to watch a show where your 'representation' is depicted that way? Obviously not. And at this point, it's happened so often that it's just expected as par for the course with any show that has progressive themes.
Tumblr media
Why would you take a chance on The Acolyte when it's been made clear "this isn't for you" and that THIS is how the creators see you?
Tumblr media
Which leaves only lesbians as the audience for lesbian shows, and they're only two percent of the population. And even then, that two percent of the population will never all watch one thing.
I guess the "good news" here is that ideologically driven entertainment companies still think they SHOULD make lesbian shows, because those are even more progressive than simple female-led shows, so these first seasons will keep getting made.
But the numbers will never add up because there just aren't that many lesbians to form a fanbase, gay men don't give a shit, straight women don't give a shit (as mentioned, they like gayboy shows because those don't have one woman, let alone TWO), and straight men don't give a shit.
And that's probably where we're going to be for a while until entertainment companies get it into their heads to try chasing trans audiences, which are even smaller than lesbian audiences and will have other audiences giving even less of a shit, but why should that stop DIsney from spending several hundred million dollars on a eight-episode show about Gag Shitto, penis-y Jedi Knight?
(It will be deleted for tax purposes in three weeks.)

I UNDERSTAND that the primary ship in Heartstopper is Nick and Charlie and I UNDERSTAND that calling out the lesbophobia behind all the shit that First Kill has been getting is extremely important but istg hearing person after person call Hearstopper a "MLM show" for the purpose of contrasting with "WLW shows" is slowly driving me insane because even though they're technically not wrong, it is still MIND-BOGGLING to me because like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS????? A "MLM SHOW"????? That just sounds like an extreme oversimplification to me I'm sorry.
Idk I'm still 100% on your side because First Kill has gotten a very similar amount of love and attention to Heartstopper and not renewing it would be a crime but this particular phrasing has been grinding my gears.
