There are things that I can understand about this whole HEARTBEAT situation.

I can understand trying to separate the art from the artist, whether it result in defending the creation, or simply taking solace that your own objective experience with said creation has not been affected. As, though games do not exist in a vacuum you can, at least, try to experience them as such.

I can understand wanting to defend the creator, either out of the nostalgia one had enjoying their content, or fear that the accusations may be overblown - or even false. I would not agree with you, as I have had such desires with previous incidents and, through introspection, found that said defense was merely to deflect the blame from my past self. To exaggerate immensely, “No, I have not committed evil in supporting whom we now know is a heinous individual, no! In fact, you are the evil one for this slander upon their good name! How dare you wish such ill will upon them! I have the moral high ground, Anakin!” ...Ahem, but I could at least understand you.

And, I can understand wanting to cut all ties to the creation entirely.

What I can’t understand is the droves of people who kick down the door at the first glimpse of any opportunity to “own the minorities,” spending money on a product they do not even care for. Because that’s what ties those three responses above together - deriving value from some art, some content, some creation. Take a look at the steam reviews for HEARTBEAT. Or, actually, don’t. It’s horrible. Just look at the amount.

So many gushing positive reviews on October 1st, all of people making the same inane comments on their .1 hour reviews. All with 300+ users finding their review helpful. Sure, you can see people gushing about how they loved this game but can’t find it nearly as charming anymore. Because a game that carries itself on its charm loses a lot of its value if the creator behind it isn’t so charming.

These reviews have dozens of people saying that their review is funny.

But I digress - more people have reviewed the game on October 1st than any other individual day the game’s been out. Most of these people are, of course, here for the sale. A sale that is almost certainly a dogwhistle, given how every other comment references this number.

Why? Not “why are you making this joke” but rather just “why?” Was it worth the money? Was it worth the time of having to like the same review, because every positive review here is absolutely the same? Will the game just... sit in your steam library, like all the rest?

Hey, if you guys want a real fucking game about lesbians that doesn't involve fucking transphobia (and in fact embraces the trans community), please go check out The Missing: J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories!

It's an incredibly moving game with a beautiful story and it deserves a lot more credit than it gets, especially coming out of a country like Japan where LGBT people are often so discriminated against.

if you’ve wondered what’s been up with heartbeatrpg since all the gross transphobic shit about it after it came out, well, the reviews stating the game’s undeserving of support were purged but there’s plenty of reviews to see (from people who played just long enough to review) of people crowing about trans ppl’s suicide stats and “hating tr*nnies” while posting completely innocent im sure pairs of lightning bolts while they all pat each other’s asses with a hearty top kek so grats devs on all your achievements
