The castle was quiet.

The silence that settled within the ancient walls was unfamiliar. No distant chatter, no infuriating footfalls of reckless children, no misfired spells crackling in empty classrooms. It was the brief lull before the students arrived and the school roused to life, giving time for the staff - old and new - to settle in. Snape has spent years bracing himself for the abject torment that was teaching a fine and delicate art to useless children, a tradition as tedious as it was inevitable. Before, he endured it at Dumbledore bequest, now he wasn't so sure. Severus Snape was still Hogwarts' own resident Potions Master, for he had refused the offer of the school's highest post after enduring one hellish year of it during the Second War; even the echoes of those memories still caused him too much pain. Rumour had it he never applied for the DADA post again, either.

He had not expected - had not wanted - to return. Yet here he was, drifting through the halls like a spectre too stubborn to fade, his presence tolerated rather than welcomed. The moment he stepped inside, he knew it had been a mistake. He caught his own reflection in a window of the Great Hall and saw the weight of survival carved into his sallow skin - a man out of place, a relic of a war, still searching for a reason to remain. Somehow, he did not think it would be possible, but Snape had grown thinner, lankier and more sullen. His black hair was now streaked with silver strands.

They were coming to the end of the Dog Days, the perfect season for harvesting ingredients, and so Snape took to the halls at night, avoiding the unrelenting warmth of the day. He'd swapped wool for cotton, but it didn't seem to make a bloody difference to the way he was sweltering in his robes. He strode with an air of weary disdain, his usual black robes billowing behind him, not in dramatic flair but with the weight of a man burdened by far too many regrets. The other reason was, as ever, that the god of sleep did not come easily - not that it ever had - but now the silence was suffocating, pressing against his chest like unseen hands. He welcomed it, in some twisted way. It was familiar, a quiet that only war left behind. Hogwarts endured. He, regrettably, had too - but the school had not been left untouched - the walls bore new scars, some visible, others woven into the very magic of the place. There were names markedly missing from the roster, there were absences that could be felt grievously.

He was walking back from a fruitful session in the greenhouses when he chanced – rather bumped into a new face in the courtyard hallway.

Azalea Sprout.

Her appointment had been mentioned by Minerva in passing, lost in the drudgery of staff meetings and the weary charade of normalcy. He had known, of course, that Pomona's daughter had taken the post of Herbology professor. He had expected another Sprout - earthy, cheerful, unshakable in the way that only Hufflepuffs could be. For a brief, disoriented moment, Snape's mind struggled to reconcile the image before him with what it knew. He recognised her instantly - he had once taught her. The sight of her, not as a child scribbling notes in his classroom but as a peer, as a professor, was jarring in a way that made his skin itch. Rationally, he knew time had passed, that she had earned the post, yet something about it felt fundamentally wrong - as if he had blinked and the world had rearranged itself without his permission.

He loomed in the dim hallway, his robes rippling slightly in the draft as he came to an abrupt halt. The scent of damp earth and crushed herbs clung to him - an unmistakable sign of his late-night foraging. His black eyes, sharp despite the eternal exhaustion weighing on him, flicked over the woman before him. He stared at her with the same wariness he reserved for anything too alive. Her youthful brightness seemed to fill the space in a way that made him uncomfortable. The silence of the castle pressed in once more, but it felt different now. Almost intrusive.

His lip curled. A strong, familiar urge to scowl rose within him. A reprimand hovered on his tongue before he remembered - she was not a student anymore. But she could have been, with her wide-eyed surprise, caught out of bed past curfew. He intoned dryly, with his trademark drawl;

"Professor Sprout - what a relief. For a moment, I thought I'd caught a particularly overgrown Hufflepuff out of bed. I suppose I should be grateful you no longer require detention."

K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Rolling Quartz 🎸

Rolling Quartz is the fourth band I’ve covered here, and the first girl band, which is very exciting! They debuted in 2020, with five members: bassist Arem, guitarists Iree and Hyunjung, vocalist Jayoung, and drummer Yeongeun. They aren’t exactly K-pop, but instead a blend of that and k-rock. Here are my credentials: I’ve been a fan of Rolling Quartz for a while now, after being recommended their excellent cover of Dreamcatcher’s Good Night, and though I know they’re not that popular (and so this review is more for me than other people), I thought it’d be fun to do to break up the SHINHWA epic.

Blaze was their debut, and what a debut it is! Coming right out the gate with a blistering, half-minute-long guitar riff, inspirational lyrics, and Jayoung’s signature husky contralto. From this first song, they immediately stand out from the crowd: besides playing instruments, having a grungier style and music video, and dabbling more in rock, their music also feels more personal, probably due to the fact that they weren’t assembled by a company but instead formed on their own and have the power to write their own songs.

Delight starts out quieter than Blaze, though it doesn’t stay that way for long. It keeps the inspirational lyrics, with a slower, more minimalistic opening that feels like it’s holding its breath until the song explodes in rock bliss. It’s a masterclass in pulling back and rushing forward, and keeps you guessing—in a good way. This was never one of my favorites as a casual listener but I’m pleased to say this changed my mind.

Holler starts with the somewhat haunting call of “Holler, holler, holler”, befitting of the MV’s vampiric inspirations (especially Jayoung’s awesome dress), and the chant repeats again in the post-choruses as a break from the established build ups. It’s definitely reminding me of a Taemin song, with its seductive creepiness, albeit based on far more of a rocky vibe than is usual for him. Overall, I like this one more this time too!

From the EP, Fighting, I liked the crisp guitar riffs of Higher and of course their excellent cover of Dreamcatcher’s Good Night...but my favorite would have to be Azalea. Adapted from an old poem protesting the Japanese occupation of Korea, it’s the true definition of an anthemic, passionate, head-banger, and I hope one day (Hera willing) I’ll get to experience its incredibleness in concert.

One is a collaboration, and goes more of a teen-movie-soundtrack-pop-punk route; as one comment I saw said, “it sounds like it could be from a Monster High movie.” Which is absolutely not criticism, by the way; though I don’t think that One is as good as tracks like Blaze, Delight, or Azalea, it’s a fun break from the darkness and makes me want to relive my younger teenage years (though maybe not all of them, let’s be honest here).

Nazababara is their return after a while, and goes a much sunnier, brighter route, making it feel less like a political anthem and more like one for a night out for friends. I love the segments with less instrumentation in the pre-chorus so that the vocals have time to breathe, and of course the short “you got me, got me” bridge was a highlight too. It’s a short song, but a memorable one.

Sing Your Heart Out is a b-side, but it was given a music video so I’m treating it like a single. It’s harsher in sound and darker in tone than Nazababara, and more true to their usual sound. The guitar riffs are as sharp as ever, and have a great sense of build in those pre-choruses, before the chorus appears to smash everything out of the park. It definitely had me banging my head, especially during that great guitar breakdown and outro.

I’m A Loner isn’t a usual Rolling Quartz song in many ways; it’s both a collaboration with Nam Do-hyun, and an OST. But, it retains their staples of driving beats and Jayoung’s strong voice with those sharp guitars that propel it forward. I hadn’t actually heard this song before this deep dive, but I ended up liking it. I wish it had more of a cathartic end to its great build-up, but otherwise it’s pretty good.

Fearless takes a more EDM-based approach to its rock, for another banger, this time choosing something I normally dislike: an “I’m-so-cooler-than-you” song…and yet, they pull it off! That guitar solo was perfection and I couldn’t resist the urge to dance along with them as they played their instruments in the rain (which I hope they didn’t have to film more than once).

Reminiscence is their most recent single, and though it starts with a sharp snare drum, its first verses are actually a quite straightforward ballad, made unique by the ever-present power in Jayoung’s voice. But of course, since this is Rolling Quartz, it soon becomes a power ballad worthy of single status, and manages to be incredibly captivating despite its music video only being them playing their instruments in their studio, and it actually became one of my favorites of theirs. Also, I had no idea that Jayoung plays piano, so that was a fun surprise.

I’m glad I did this! I knew I would have a great time, but it was still a fun ride. I forgot how few songs Rolling Quartz actually has, but when every one of them is so high in quality, I can’t really complain. I learned a lot more about them as people too, watching some interviews and behind the scenes content and having some good laughs along the way.

My Top 5 songs are Blaze, Azalea, Nazababara, Reminiscence, and Fearless, with Sing Your Heart Out as an honorable mention. Rolling Quartz gets a 9 out of 10 from me, the same as The Rose did, which isn’t surprising at all. I don’t think that there’s a single song of theirs I don’t like, and very few that I don’t love. They’re remarkably consistent and incredibly talented, and I can’t wait to see what they do next!

Palomian mythology is of course mythology of Ancient Paloma (Quirme). Paloma is also characterized as “The Land of the gods”—it was quoted as the first civilization and was separated by city states presumably: Argonia, Teroe (Teroona), Royli, Elunia and—the famous—Paloma. Paloma—as per palomian mythos—was a giant island (During the drifting of Pangea) that lay in where “point nemo” came to be. It was consumed by the waves a few thousand years after the Primordial Chaos.

Palomians—like all civilizations—had a language; collectively called “P’loakmi”. P’loakmi has two types:

- Standard Palomian- Mostly seen on artifacts and retrieved materials. (deciphered)

- P’loakmi (ORIGINAL)- The language of the gods and only the gods. Seen on ancient texts that were believed to be written by the gods of Paloma. (indecipherable)

In the retrieved archives of Palomian Mythology (some of which were deciphered) held the story of creation. Though people weren’t sure if this was how the story actually went, because water damages, missing pages and hints of original P’loakmi made it hard for them to piece the information together.

With the little details we were given here was how the story presumably went:

Ci (Universe) gave birth to Sysr (god of the universe and creator of the gods). Sysr wanted to make another god to do his work for him so Sysr created Arif (the embodiment of the sun, god of the sun and time | “Giver of Life”). Sysr and Arif both worked together to create the stars, the planets, the galaxies and so on. Arif was tasked by Sysr to create life and he (Arif) obeyed.

Arif landed on the Earth (called “Ana’tenka” in earlier writings) back when the Earth was barren and knew only volcanoes and never ending flame. Arif looked around and was not happy with how Earth looked; that was when he realized why Sysr gave him such an important task—as to create life is to stop this kind of destruction. Arif went to work—Arif tried working with stone, with flames, he also tried working with something called “Sh’kalza” (we have no idea what that was but uhhhh), but none worked. Until Arif tried again; this time to his surprise it worked. Arif created a successful being able to sustain life, his name was Paloma, he was the first man to ever walk the Earth—well only for a few minutes—it didn’t take long for his creation in wither and die—knowing the state of the Earth during the time—Paloma burned and he screamed in agonizing pain, his body began blistering until Paloma dropped dead on Arif’s feet and let out a faint whisper as if to say “Why?”. Arif stared for a while—quite unamused—until he felt a distinct aura stand behind him. It was Vendetta (the god of death and the dead), the moment the first life drew their last breath it echoed throughout the cosmos and naturally death found its place in the universe as a silent being that remained the balance. That moment marked the official start of Palomian Mythology (named after the first creation of Arif).

Arif’s task wasn’t over and the last thing Arif wanted was to anger the god of the universe so he and Vendetta devised a plan. Arif—god of time and the sun, Vendetta—god of the death and dead merged their powers together to form a young goddess—no more than a baby. The universe stopped in a moment as if to marvel at the importance of the moment, the universe whispered in a hush voice “Azalea..”, Arif and Vendetta agreed—she was to be named Azalea. The moment Azalea set her little feet on the land—all those around her blossomed into beautiful flowers and grass. Arif and Vendetta were enchanted at what was happening—even a being so small can create such magnificent things. Azalea was the goddess of beauty and nature, the mother of all things alive.

When Arif and Vendetta showed Azalea to Sysr he was pleased. Sysr gave them the order to raise her into a more mature goddess for she will bring life to every corner of the universe once she was ready. She was viewed as Arif and Vendetta’s daughter in later tales. And everything followed with it—With the blossoming of the Earth there came the seas birthing Arnav (god of the sea and ocean), the last remnants of volcanoes birthing Cyrus (god of fire and the blaze), the winds singing a song ever so softly birthing Tece Kronos (god of winds and tamer of the howling winds).

We are not so sure how accurate the story is knowing that some pages are missing still yet to be found and deciphered—but I guess we have to work with what we have, no?

Blake Delgado-Stilinski:

He's half-blood and got sorted into Slytherin. He's friends with Anne and Sebastian Sallow, Ominis Gaunt, Natsai Onai, Nellie Oggspire and Samantha Dale. He dated Imelda Reyes and Amit Thakkar. But he ended up with Sebastian. He's very ambitious and excellent student. His favorite subject is Defense Against the Dark Arts. He has difficulties with Potions.
