Favourite quote? Do you remember the first time you kissed me? You didn't even ask. You didn't pause to wonder whether it was what I wanted, and I went along with it because I had a crush, and I didn't know any better. I didn't realize that you had all the control. When I eventually did realize, I thought... "This must be what I deserve." Someone taking whatever he wants from me whenever he wants. Treating me like I'm nothing the rest of the time. Now, whenever anything good happens in my life, there's a voice in the back of my mind telling me I'm worthless and that I don't deserve it. And now you want me to forgive you so you can feel better about yourself? I'm glad you realize what you did was wrong, but you don't get to ambush me into forgiving you. "Sorry" doesn't make up for everything you did to me. I really hope you become a better person so you don't hurt anyone else. But I don't wanna be there to see that happen. I don't wanna see you ever again.

James Somerton Sucks For Many Reasons. But Also His Opinion On Heartstopper...
Ok so I was watching Todd in the Shadows' video on fact-checking James Somerton's vids (of course after having watched Hbomberguy's video). And a clip played of James lying (again) about straight white women complaining about a gay show. Except he mentions at the end of the sentence that these supposed people were "exposed to gay content for the first time in their lives via Heartstopper".
19:18 - https://youtu.be/A6_LW1PkmnY?t=1158
Now idk if that was supposed to be a joke or if that reflects any of his actual opinions on it (it's not like he's known for telling the truth anyway now tho)
But I'd just like to say anyway [this ties back into James I swear just bear with me]
I'm 18 years old now and I'm still dealing with issues cause by the homophobia I experienced in high school. And one of the few things that got me through it was when I got the first volume of Hearstopper when I was 16. And that actually was MY first real exposer to properly gay content. ME. Another gay boy. Not a straight woman.
And not only that, but it was the first time that I took in a piece of media and could honestly say "I see myself in this"
It was the first time I felt really seen and felt like I had my issues understood. And even as I've gotten slightly older through the two years, they've still been able to help me.
My friends will know that I've been struggling a lot with certain mental health issues that affect my physical health too. And I only realised how bad my problem really is and how much its been affecting me when I read volumes 3 and 4 and saw Charlie dealing with almost the exact same problem. I had been in such denial about it and worrying that it wasn't even real that I hadn't even considered it. But reading about him suffering from and eventually admitting to his problem and trying to get help made me think about what I had been experiencing. And gave me some perspective as to what exactly was happening in head and to my body.
The reason I'm saying all this is because I'm trying to show that these books about gay teenagers are REALLY good at portraying the experiences of gay teenagers. (At least based on my own personal life, Ik it could be very different for others and that's still valid) and they made me understand that what I had been through and am still dealing with because of that; are not isolated incidents and that I am not alone.
And James... someone who tried to give off the impression that he knows a lot about queer culture. Used it as an example of mindless romance fluff...
Which I think shows:
His lack of understanding of what it is actually like growing up as a gay boy in our current time. (Again, not trying to speak for everyone but it's very accurate to my own life)
And
2. His unwillingness/disinterest to look into what the books actually contain and how readers may respond to it.
[Also I just realised after typing all this that he could have meant the Netflix show, which imo wasn't as good but I think my point still stands?]

No spoilers, but yeah... I haven't stopped thinking about this since we got those first look pictures... and I've been meaning to make this meme since then, but I kept forgetting... (don't know if someone else has made it already).
And no, I haven't watched the leaks, I don't even want to believe it's true... so messed up...
Anyway, I've been rewatching Heartstopper season 1 and 2, AND rereading the comics, in preparation for season 3... I've been a bit down lately, and Hearstopper is always a nice, welcome distraction. But every time I rewatch season 2, and reread volumes 3 and 4, I'm reminded of how much the story and the characters grow and have to deal with heavier and more mature themes, and it hits hard. Also I just ordered volume 5...
Maybe I should also reread Solitaire... (confession, I only read it once, and I liked it but not that much... but maybe I should give it another shot, I did read it a bit too quickly and maybe I wasn't in the right mood... there was also a lot of me trying to match the timelines, since I read Heartstopper first, so maybe that was distracting...)
So yeah, no watching the leaks... and I hope most people don't either. I want to be heartbroken with the rest of you in October, as we should.

Heartstopper vol. 4 by Alice Oseman
I finished the (published) series with this one, and I absolutely need to know how this amazing story will end. When I started the first volume a few days back I new the genral plot of these graphic novels, but I had no idea how many subjects they deal with. I didn't know that mental health was such a big part of the plot, and I am incredibly happy that it is. I feel like it was used very well, to create awareness and also maybe to have people dealing with simillar things realize it's way more common that expected to struggle with your mental health. What I loved about this particular series is that it does not follow the very common trope of person A has issues that disapper into the void once they enter a relationship with person B. Clearly the relationship helps the character but it does not solve all their problems, it's a support not the key to the perfect life. And seeing this in such a clear way without demeaning either the character's struggles nor their mental health was so refreshing. I am so tired of this common idea that romantic relationship are going to fix everything in your life, becuase humans are complicate and things are not that simple. What Heartstopper does amazingly as a whole is to deal with such subjects without losing its very sweet and lighthearted vibe. It's not an easy thing to do but Alice Oseman did a remarkable job. I also really liked how just like in the previous volume we get to see a bit more of the characters surrounding Nick and Charlie, and this is the reason why I picked this book for the queer found family prompt for the studyblr w/knives pride reading challenge. Heartstopper is a brilliant graphic novel series that will most certainly become part of my comfort book pile, I am really grateful I did decide to pick these books up, and I couldn't recommend them more.

*BOOK REVIEW*
⭐ 4/5
This was such an adorable and a quick read.
Charlie Spring is a gay boy in Truham Grammer School for boys and Nick Nelson, a straight rugby player, is a grade higher than him.
Nick and Charlie are so adorable and innocent. The way Nick falls for Charlie is so pure and rare😌 I could literally feel the sparks whenever Nick and Charlie were together🤌🏻
I didn't expect to like this graphic novel so much but I guess I was wrong🤷🏻‍♀️ This was different from what I usually read which is mostly ya fantasy.
I am so excited to read Hearstopper: Volume 2💕
I absolutely loved the show. The characters are brought to life amazingly and the casting is just perfect.
If I had to describe this book in 2 words then it would be: Heartstoppingly adorable💗🌈

I went to Waterstones today with a mate, and they had a Hearstopper display. I pointed out to him that the volumes were all out of order (it went 2, 1, 4, 3) and I had to watch this absolute MORON rearrange the display. People were laughing. Long story short, I'm never taking him out in public again 🤣
Edit: the embarrassing part wasn't that he rearranged the display, it was that he was muttering under his breath that he was doing the employees' jobs better then they were the whole time

Reading Challenge 2/9/18
Graphic Novel: Sandman: Volume 4: Season of Mists by Neil Gaiman
Read: p1-192 (end), 192% of goal
Favorite Passage:
“And the angel Remiel ascends into the sky of the underworld, confident that it has begun to change things. To substitute redemption for damnation, correction for despair... Bit by bit, a little at a time. The billions of souls, the millions of demons...
The flames of Hell, Remiel muses, have become refining fires, burning away the dross, leaving purity and repentance and good. Remiel hears the screams, and it smiles.
Perhaps, it thinks, it judged too hastily. After all, this is part of the plan, is it not? The how could it not be for the best, in this, the best of all possible worlds... Perhaps events have ended happily, after all
Happily.
Ever After.
In Hell.”

hearstopper - vol. 4 - review
Tumblr media
"love can't cure a mental illness. there are lots of ways to help him, you can just be there. to listen. to talk. to cheer him up if he's having a bad day. and on the bad days you can ask what you could do to make things easier. stand by his side, even when things are hard. but also knowing that sometimes people need more support than just one person can give. that's love darling."
in the fourth installment in this series, charlie and nick are separated for about three weeks, as nick is on holiday in menorca with his family. charlie's mental health is getting progressively worse during this time and at the beginning of the year, he is admitted into hospital to work on his issues. and nick is learning how he can be a supportive boyfriend.
this was definitely the most difficult one to read out of the four that are out now, because there are definitely a few sensitive topics that are addressed, such as mental health, eating disorders, and nick's brother being an absolute dickhead about nick being bisexual. i think that the way oseman handled these topics was really good. i haven't dealt with any of the issues that the characters deal with in this, so i can't speak on the representation of them, but i do think they were handled well.
i'm so sad there is only one installment of this left after this, because i love these two boys so freaking much! the way they care about each other, the way their friends have accepted them, it warms my heart. i think this series could me a lot to a lot of people, because aside from the gay and bisexual main characters, there is also lesbian and trans representation in this series, which i really liked.
i can't wait to see what's going to happen in the last installment and how oseman is going to wrap up this series.
rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
