“I have always been an active person with a general interest in fitness but I didn’t start running until after I had children. I had severe post natal depression after the birth of my first child and so after the birth of my second son, three years later, I was much more aware of my mental health. I looked for a way of keeping fit, whilst getting outside and giving myself some time out from the responsibilities of being a mum – running seemed the perfect answer! It quickly became the thing that gave me time just for me.
I did a few shorter races while the kids were young, a couple of 10kms and a few duathlons. I had it in my mind that I would love to be able to run a half marathon but thought it just wasn’t possible for me. Another mum from my plunket group then told me how she was training for the Christchurch Half with a group from her church and invited me to join them. I did and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made!
It was the support from the people in that group that made me realise that I really could do it and that got me across the finish line of my first half marathon. I continued to run with people from that group and went on to complete a few more half’s, and although he didn’t tell me at the time, the coach had set the training plan up so that there was a marathon six weeks after one of them. So when I’d done the half he just said “well, you’ve trained to this point, done a really good half, now you could keep going and do a full!” My belief in myself that I could do it definitely wasn’t as strong as his belief that I could!
On the marathon day I was extremely nervous on the start line, but it was an amazing race and one that will stick in my mind for just being awesome. You never know what’s going to happen in a race, you don’t know if you can complete it, but I was smiling from beginning to end. My friend joined me on her bike towards the end and I remember her saying “I’m pretty sure you’re meant to be dying about now!” But we were just running along chatting and it was a great run for all the right reasons.
My running has evolved over the years and the distances have increased. I enjoy being part of a race but I also just love getting out and adventuring with friends. I am happiest when I am out on the trails. Speed is irrelevant to me. It is being out in nature, moving my body and freeing my mind that is important. It’s all about just being present and celebrating the fact that I get to run and have a body that allows me to! I have faced some mental health problems in my life and running has definitely helped me to feel in control of my body during times when I haven’t necessarily been able to control my mind.
You learn so much from running, especially the longer distance runs, that you can apply to other areas of your life; like just keep putting one foot in front of the other and don’t look too far ahead. Running an ultra can be a very overwhelming thing, but if you break it down into lots of 5km, all of a sudden it doesn’t seem so overwhelming.
The people and the community that I have connected with along my running journey have made such a difference to me. I like to think that I’ve made a difference to some people as well. I volunteer for Speed Freaks as a coach. I’ve been doing that for about 18 months now and I just absolutely love it! The philosophy behind the Speed Freaks is to bring people together by using running as a vehicle for overcoming mental health or addiction issues. Just having the support of other people around you, people that notice if you don’t turn up, who check in with you and see how you are – that’s everything. And it’s not necessarily about the outcome of races or how fast you are, it’s just about being around supportive people who’ve got a common goal. Wearing the blue t-shirt is a big honour to me. I love it when people recognise you and call you a ‘freak’ as you’re running along.
I have done a lot this year, it’s been awesome and I am really proud of some things I’ve achieved – my first backyard ultra and first ‘official’ ultra race, but I think I’m actually going to go back to running for the enjoyment of it for a bit. I just need to go back to the love of it for a while.”

How To Find The Best Chiropractor For Holistic Health Benefits
Are you on a quest for holistic health and considering chiropractic care? Finding the best chiropractor Christchurch professional can be like searching for a needle in a haystack, especially with many available options. But don’t worry; we're here to guide you through the maze.
Whether you're dealing with chronic pain or stress or just want to enhance your overall well-being, choosing the right chiropractor can make all the difference. Let’s dive into how you can find a chiropractor who will align with your health goals and offer the holistic benefits you’re seeking.
Understanding Holistic Health and Chiropractic Care
Holistic health focuses on treating the whole person rather than just symptoms. It combines physical, emotional, and lifestyle aspects to achieve overall well-being. Chiropractors are well-known for spinal adjustments, but their approach often goes beyond fixing back pain.
When looking for the best chiropractor in Christchurch, seek those who embrace this holistic approach. They should focus on spine alignment and consider how lifestyle, nutrition, and stress management affect health.
Key Qualities to Look For
Experience and Expertise
When searching for the best chiropractor in Christchurch, experience is paramount. An experienced chiropractor has likely encountered various issues and developed effective treatment strategies. Look for practitioners with specialised training in holistic practices and a proven track record in managing conditions like yours.
Personalised Approach
Every individual’s health needs are unique. The best chiropractor Christchurch expert will take a personalised approach, assessing your health concerns and goals. They should provide tailored treatment plans that address your unique needs rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution. This personalised care is essential for achieving the best holistic health outcomes.
Positive Patient Reviews
Patient reviews can provide valuable insights into the chiropractor’s effectiveness and bedside manner. A chiropractor with a strong reputation for positive outcomes and patient satisfaction will likely be the best chiropractor Christchurch professional for your needs. Look for testimonials that highlight successful treatments and overall positive experiences.
Questions to Ask During Your Search
What is Your Approach to Holistic Health?
Ask potential chiropractors about their approach to holistic health. Do they incorporate techniques like nutritional counselling, stress management, or exercise recommendations into their practice? The best chiropractor, Christchurch will offer a comprehensive approach to your well-being.
What Techniques Do You Use?
Chiropractors use various techniques, from traditional spinal adjustments to modern methods. Inquire about their techniques and ensure they align with your comfort level and health goals. The best chiropractor in Christchurch will be open to discussing their methods and how they can benefit you.
What are Your Qualifications and Training?
Verify the chiropractor’s qualifications, including their education, certifications, and any additional training in holistic practices. A well-qualified chiropractor will have the credentials and ongoing education to provide effective, up-to-date care.
Making the Final Decision
Choosing the best chiropractor in Christchurch involves more than just finding someone with the right qualifications. It’s also about finding a practitioner you feel comfortable with who understands your health goals.
Schedule consultations with a few chiropractors to discuss your needs, ask questions, and get a feel for their approach. Trust your instincts—choose someone who makes you feel confident and supported in your journey towards holistic health.
In Conclusion
Finding the best chiropractor Christchurch professional can transform your approach to health and well-being. By focusing on holistic care, looking for experience and personalised treatment, and asking the right questions, you can find a chiropractor who will guide you towards optimal health.
Remember, the right chiropractor will adjust and align your spine with your overall health goals, helping you achieve a balanced and healthier life.

The Ultimate Guide to Ice Baths and Their Surprising Benefits
In recent years, ice baths have gained popularity among athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and even those seeking alternative methods of relaxation and recovery. While the idea of immersing oneself in ice-cold water may seem daunting at first, the benefits of ice baths are too significant to ignore.
From reducing muscle soreness to improving circulation, the therapeutic effects of cold water immersion are well-documented. In this ultimate guide, let’s delve into the science behind ice bath Auckland and explore their surprising benefits.
What is an Ice Bath?
An ice bath, also known as cold water immersion or float therapy in Christchurch, involves immersing the body in cold water, typically with temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit), for a short period of time, usually between 10 to 20 minutes.
The Science Behind Ice Baths:
Reduces Muscle Soreness and Inflammation:
After an intense workout or physical activity, muscles often become sore due to micro-tears in the muscle fibers. Ice baths help reduce muscle soreness by constricting blood vessels and decreasing metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown.
Enhances Recovery:
Cold water immersion accelerates the recovery process by reducing the buildup of lactic acid in the muscles, which can lead to fatigue and soreness. By promoting faster recovery, athletes can train harder and more frequently, leading to improved performance over time.
Improves Circulation:
The cold temperature of the water causes blood vessels to constrict, which forces blood to move away from the extremities and towards the core of the body. Once out of the ice bath Auckland therapy, the body's natural response is to warm up, causing blood to rush back to the extremities. This process improves circulation and promotes healing.
Boosts Mood and Mental Health:
Ice baths have been shown to trigger the release of endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that help reduce pain and improve mood. Additionally, the shock of the cold water can help increase alertness and mental clarity, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
How to Take an Ice Bath:
Prepare the Bath: Fill a bathtub or large container with cold water, adding enough ice to achieve the desired temperature (usually between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius).
Get In: Carefully lower yourself into the cold water, ensuring that your entire body is submerged up to the neck.
Stay In for 10-20 Minutes: Relax and try to stay in the ice bath for 10 to 20 minutes. If you're new to float therapy in Christchurch, start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the duration as you become more accustomed to the cold.
Warm Up: Once your time is up, slowly exit the ice bath and warm up with a hot shower or by wrapping yourself in a warm towel.
Final Thoughts
While ice baths may not be the most pleasant experience, the benefits they offer are undeniable. Whether you're an elite athlete looking to improve performance or simply someone looking for a natural way to reduce muscle soreness and boost overall well-being, ice baths are worth considering.
By incorporating ice bath Auckland therapy immersion into your routine, you can recover faster, train harder, and feel better both physically and mentally. So why not take the plunge and give it a try? Your body will thank you for it!

Week 9 DES302 Capstone
Week 9
First week back after the ‘break’, and it’s been another solid week of productivity! Although the main thing I set out to achieve at the start of the week was back seated for next week, everything else I set out to achieve went very well. The week started with further remote working, and Monday was mainly spent creating a presentation for the pitch practice we had planned as a class for Thursday, as well as further logo and marketing work. On Tuesday I travelled back to Auckland, as I was in Christchurch for a representative hockey tournament. Then, the rest of the week was spent testing my new 3D print, testing my organic models, and planning pitch mock-ups. From these tests, I continued to iterate my prototypes, which stuck to my Gantt chart well. Outside of University, my overall health is good! Being productive over the break has put me in a solid mental place where I’m happy with my progress and feel that the workload I have coming will be manageable. Furthermore, we began our World Cup campaign and played our first friendly game on Thursday night while training on Tuesday and Saturday. Being surrounded by my best mates doing the activities I love is an excellent form of personal therapy and allows my mind to escape from the encapsulation of a capstone project.
The context of this week has been discussed accidentally in the introduction, so CARL is well and truly underway. Going straight into the action and results, this week had more testing and iterating (it’s becoming a bit of a repetition sorry). Once back in Auckland, I got straight into testing both of my prototypes! I started with my 3D print of model 4, which worked wonderfully and honestly made my day. I removed the cap (which had some issues with the thread but we move) and filled the stud with my seedmix. Once the initial leak test was passed, and the seeds stayed in the sealed system, I tested the twist mechanics and they worked wonderfully! With each twist a few seeds were transported through the stud and out of the bottom, exactly as I had planned. This proved that the new spiral design and shell both created a sealed system and a functioning one. This meant that model 5 didn’t need much in terms of iteration here. The major changes to model 5 came with a newly designed stud cap. Moving away from a screw top and instead focusing on a tightly fitting cap to close off the model. With this, there have also been cut outs incorporated to ensure that the stud can be refilled without the need of removing the lower shell, thus streamlining the refilling process further and removing the need for threads, reducing the risk of damage or accidental loss of the lower portion of the stud. Once the stud is assembled, glue can be used if needed to ensure that the cap and shell aren't separated, although from previous tests I feel that the tightness of the print should be enough. The shell remained unchanged apart from removing the outer thread, and the spiral mechanic had it’s support changed from a cross to a straight rectangle to increase space for refilling the stud and to reduce materials used.
In terms of my organic stud models, the results after testing mix 2 were extremely promising. I spent 15 minutes running on slightly damp grass with the boots on, doing directional cuts and other movements common with a game of football, and as seen above, the studs more or less degraded, but not until around the 15 minute mark. This is exactly what I wanted after mix 1s durability being too low. a 15-20 minute lifespan is perfect for allowing enough time for a game to flow, while also ensuring that the studs break down enough to plant a meaningful amount of mix throughout the game. A 15 - 20 minute life span allows roughly 5-6 breaks within a game to replace the studs, which for an exhibition / event game is perfectly reasonable. With this, I think the mixture ratio for mix 2 is exactly what I wanted, and will be closely followed for the next mix (presentation mix).
Alongside the prototyping process, there was a bit of planning here and there, primarily focused on the other deliverables outside of my prototypes. This included video structure and planning for our video deliverable, mock-up image planning for my casebook, and further structure work for my visual summary.
From all of this, I continued to learn and improve with 3D modelling and 3D printing, as well as learning that nothing is ever going to be perfect, and I need to be ok with leaving certain parts of this project as they are in order to progress in other areas. I have thoroughly enjoyed the prototyping and testing period of this project, but as the Gantt chart plan for prototyping time is coming to an end, I need to move on from this side of the project and focus on the other deliverables. This is difficult for me as I’m moving away from working with things I’m confident with, to things I’m not. However, I’m aware of my struggles with the graphical side of design and will try my best to chuck myself in the deep end, and not be scared to fail. I’m hoping that I can ride the high of prototyping into this graphical journey and continue to be productive and to produce work that I’m proud of.
Here are some photos of model 5 and it’s renders :)

"I started running at primary school, somewhat reluctantly, doing the required cross-country. And being at a small Fiordland school, if there was a sports team for anything, you sort of all have to play, just to make up the numbers!
Both my parents did the first Kepler Challenge and I remember “running” with Dad while he was training and trying to keep up with him... as much as an eight year old can. Around that time there was also a local run/bike event that went from Manapouri to Te Anau. You’d be in teams of two where you'd leap frog one another, leaving your bike on the side of the road and then start running. That would have been my first race but I didn't really run again after I left school. I did spend my youth volunteering for the Kepler Challenge though; amazed at how people could possibly run that far and never once believing that I could do it myself.
Years later I worked for DOC on the Milford Track, essentially chasing whio (blue duck) up and down a river. That kept me pretty fit as I was always on my feet a lot, hiking and climbing hills. So I decided to enter the Luxmore Grunt, essentially with no training, aside from chasing ducks. I did the Luxmore Grunt two years in a row and I did all right. And then I just stopped running again, for about fifteen years.
It was during the Covid lockdown that I took it up again properly. Mostly because there was nothing else to do, you couldn't go anywhere. I'd sort of tried to get back into running a few times, but I'd always injure myself early on because I’d go out too far, too fast, too soon. So lockdown was a good opportunity to do it right and I made a plan to take it slow. I even found a ‘couch to 5k’ plan and (mostly) stuck to it. But then they let us out of lockdown and I sort of just bolted! I found all the trails close to home on the Wild Things website and it ballooned out of control quite quickly. I was like “how many trails can I tick off?” I live in Christchurch with the Port Hills on my doorstep - so it turns out there’s a lot!
I found another training plan online and decided to train for the Motatapu Marathon. Unfortunately it was cancelled because of Covid, so I ran a 42km loop around Lyttleton Harbour. I just thought “I wonder if I can”. And I could, although it was a bit of a sufferfest. (I also had to because it was the only way to get back to the car!).
Why did I run? I think I just really enjoyed the freedom of being out of the house and in nature. I don't know, it's quite relaxing... as much as it can hurt at times. And I think for me, those mental health benefits you get from being outside, moving and having time to think were really important. And I love a challenge - I'm very badge orientated. If there's a way of gamifying something, you've got me! And ticking off as many trails as I could had me hooked.
I’d listen to podcasts on my runs and there was an episode on Dirt Church Radio that stuck with me. Madeleine Collins from Auckland had done a challenge during lockdown where she ran an 8km loop in January... and then she ran it twice in February, three times in March, four times in April, continuing on like that for a whole year, finally running twelve loops in December. That challenge really appealed to me; that kind of incremental, increasing suffering, a ‘I don't know if this thing is possible’ kind of thing. I didn’t jump on it right away, but doing something similar was always in the back of my mind.
Then my Aunt Joan passed away from younger onset dementia a couple of years ago. Dementia Canterbury, a support network for patients and their families, had been a really useful resource for her and her family, and so I decided to try and raise some money for them in memory of my Aunt, to give back for all that they did. My Uncle Pete had ridden the length of New Zealand as a fundraiser and I still had this Madeleine Collins idea mulling around in my head. So I decided it was an opportunity to amalgamate these two ideas; raise some cash for Dementia Canterbury, and set myself a fun challenge... well, type two fun.
For my “Adventure for Dementia”, I settled on a 5km loop in the Port Hills, known as the “Pipeline of Pain”. It just sounds so appealing, doesn’t it. It has 490 metres of climbing over that 5km. The plan was I’d run one loop in January, two in February, three times in March, all the way through to December. The final run in December was 62 kilometres with 5,780 metres elevation. Okay it’s not really a run, it was basically straight up the gas pipeline, then it was too steep to run down the other side really, and then it was into another steep up and down. December's 12 loops took me 18 hours to complete.
I was so fortunate to have a whole lot of community support around me for this. I did the single January lap by myself because I hadn't told anyone what or why I was doing it, and I didn't know yet if it was even possible. But people slowly found out and basically every lap thereafter people would join me. One guy Ken, who at the time I didn't really know, joined me in May and he did all five laps with me. Then he came back for June, July, August, right through to December. I did 78 laps in total and Ken did 68. We're quite good mates now, after spending a lot of time and suffering together. Heaps of other people that I'd never met before joined in for laps too. Some people got wind of it and drove from miles away to be a part of it. Some people just wanted to come and challenge themselves on the Pipeline track, and some came because they had a dementia connection.
I/We raised $13,000 for Dementia Canterbury - very stoked!! That was nine months ago now. I still like running, but I didn't run for some months afterwards. I was a tad broken, but I learnt that it's possible... that it's absolutely possible... you just have to be stubborn, keep moving.... and remember to eat!
I do want to know what more I am capable of. I don't feel like I’ve hit the limit yet, maybe because I haven't failed. I feel like there's more. I've got a miler on my list, another Backyard Ultra maybe.
My advice, just go and do it I reckon. If you don't get out there and give it a go you'll never know what's possible!"Amy @amy_goes_adventuring (Christchurch) Photo taken in Te Anau– Portraits of Runners + their stories @RunnersNZ

What Are Questions To Ask The Chiropractor?
What Are Questions To Ask The Chiropractor?Finding a Chiropractor in Christchurch can be a daunting task. You want to find someone who's qualified, experienced, and able to help you with your specific health issues. But how do you know if the chiropractor you've chosen is the right fit?
The best way to answer that question is by asking them questions. That's where this post comes in! We've created a list of questions for you to ask your potential chiropractor in order to make sure they're qualified for your needs:
Most Important Questions to Ask Chiropractor
What kinds of problems do you treat?
As a patient, you're probably wondering what kinds of problems the chiropractor treats. Here are some sample questions to help you get started:
What kinds of problems do you treat?
What types of pain do you treat?
How are injuries treated at your clinic or office? Does it matter if I have insurance coverage for treatment, or if I'm paying out-of-pocket for my care?
Do any sports injuries (for example, tennis elbow) require special care from your clinic or office?
Do you have experience treating athletes?
If your athletic pursuits involve any kind of physical activity, you may be curious about whether a chiropractor can help. Chiropractic care is suitable for anyone who wants to live a healthier life, but it's also especially useful for athletes and those who train hard.
Pain management
Injury rehabilitation
Performance enhancement
Athletes may experience neck pain due to poor posture while playing sports or practicing daily activities like driving or sitting at a desk all day long.
These issues can lead to pain throughout other parts of the body as well as decreased mobility in joints due to muscle tension built up over time from repetitive movements such as running or throwing motions used during different types of sports activities where athletes rely heavily on having strong core muscles around their waistline just like any other type of exercise program does too!
How many treatments will I need?
The answer to this question will vary depending on the condition you are treating. For example, if you have chronic back pain and you only need a few adjustments to improve your range of motion, then four or five visits may be all you need.
However, if the problem is more severe and requires extensive treatment, then it could take longer to see improvement in your symptoms.
In addition to asking how many treatments will be necessary for your condition, make sure that the doctor explains why this number is required and what happens if appointments are missed or not kept regularly (e.g., does frequency affect treatment outcomes?).
How often should I come back for a checkup?
After your first visit, you'll probably be asked to come back for a follow-up in about six to eight weeks. This is the amount of time it usually takes for most bodies to make real changes.
If you're not improving by then and have no new symptoms, then repeat this schedule until you do start seeing improvements.
But if you are seeing improvements at each check up (which is always a good sign), then you can wait longer between appointments. In fact, some people only go in once every three or four months after being adjusted regularly during the first year or two—but still keep up with their home care routine between visits!
If everything seems fine and dandy after two years of regular adjustments (and home care), your chiropractor may even recommend that they don't need to see them anymore unless they return with new symptoms or concerns.
Conclusion
Now that you know more about what to ask your Chiropractor in Christchurch, we hope you feel more confident in choosing a good one! Remember, if you have any other questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact an expert.
