365 day inversion challenge - Day 1
Now that I’ve learned how to do inversions, I’m kind of obsessed with it. So I’ve decided to start a 365 day inversion challenge.
I know how to headstand and also tripod headstand. I can hold a forearm stand but not for long at all. Also I still need a wall behind me to do it. I don’t know how to handstand yet.
Here is my first post for this challenge.

A Chat with Simran Thandani ‘05 on Yoga and Meditation
In its broadest sense, self-care is just about anything one does to take care of or be good to oneself. WU is always interested to know what this looks like for members of the Wellesley community!
I recently chatted with Simran Thadani ’05 about this, prompted by an Instagram post celebrating Sim’s 365- (which ultimately became 451-) day streak of practicing meditation, with help from the Headspace app. I was interested to know more not only about her self-care practice, but also how she was able to remain committed to the process in the context of a busy schedule.
Rewinding slightly, however, I first wanted to know about Sim’s self-care practice during Wellesley and in graduate school. She graduated summa cum laude and later went on to receive a PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania — which, she readily admits, made her very much the “Wendy Wellesley” archetype, subscribing to the “sleep when you’re dead” mentality. Her mother attempted to get her to try yoga and meditation (not least because her name, “Simran,” means meditation!), but Sim was not interested; despite being Indian by origin, she didn’t immediately connect with these practices. However, a back injury finally led her to yoga in 2009 — and she loved it, practicing off and on in local gyms for the next several years.
Fast forward to 2016. By now, Sim had finished grad school, but had a hectic job, keeping her frazzled and constantly exhausted. She realized that wanted to feel “more centered and calm.” After hearing about the Headspace app from a friend, she waded into meditation, and used the app to engage in 451 straight days of meditation before breaking her streak... by falling asleep on the couch on a random Thursday evening!
When I asked her about the role that meditation plays in her self-care practice today, she said that, in school, she didn’t give herself much downtime, but by carving out space for meditation daily, she created a habit or tradition of making time for herself to recharge and recenter. “I’ve seen the effects of meditation specifically around reactivity. Meditating has helped me create critical space between my initial, lightning-quick gut assessment of a particular incident and my ultimate response — thereby giving me a sense of equanimity. By the way, I love that that word literally means ‘equal mind, (from the Latin aequus animus) — geek alert!”
Sim also completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training certification in 2018. For a long time she had dreamed of completing her training at Vikasa Yoga Retreat in Koh Samui, Thailand, but a fractured ankle from a YOLO trip to Iceland prevented her from traveling much in 2017. About a year in, she realized that her bucket list item was the training itself, and not the venue… So she enrolled at her local studio, going to classes on nights and weekends for 15 weeks. “It was a pretty different experience than beaches, sand, and palm trees… But unexpectedly, it was the perfect training for me after all: learning from teachers I already knew; forming new friendships right at home in SF; and a deep devotion and emphasis on the spiritual roots of yoga.”
Hearing this, I was curious to get Sim’s opinion on cultural appropriation, given yoga’s increasing global reach and her own South Asian heritage. She differentiates between respect/appreciation and co-opting. “As an Indian, I’m proud and happy to share yoga with the world,” she says, “so it doesn’t feel less authentic to be taught yoga by non-Indians, so long as there is no active disrespect — because ethnicity aside, my teachers absolutely have more knowledge of yoga and spirituality than I do! In fact, Teacher Training taught me just how much yoga has evolved over time. Even the great teachers braided together Western and Indian athletic and wellness practices. And there are precious few surviving yogic manuscripts, as it was all an oral tradition. So ultimately there is no single, unbroken ‘yogic lineage’ to get on a high horse about, anyway…”
A few years ago, Sim took issue with her yoga studio putting portraits of Hindu gods on the walls, because it meant that students were doing headstands and other inversions by kicking their feet up against the deities (a classic sign of disrespect in Hindu culture). But when she provided feedback to the studio, they responded positively, and eventually repainted the walls entirely!
In closing, we discussed the #WellesleyEffect and the part that meditation/mindfulness plays in countering the stress of high expectations and constant achievement. Sim confesses that while she did feel an egotistical sense of achievement in her 451-day meditation streak, yoga/mindfulness in general has taught her about focusing more on the process or journey versus the final goal. Practicing yoga has become about discipline — but also about not judging herself too harshly; for example, Sim says, “I’m surprisingly not obsessed about doing a particular pose ‘perfectly,’ whatever that means.” Instead, in defining success, she considers how peaceful she feels internally — but even this is a work in progress, because there is still “that Wellesley part of me that’s driven by making a difference in the world and all the external markers of achievement we normally care about.” Part of her yoga practice, however, is not so much about making that linear, “career ladder,” “best in class” ambition go away, but about learning to dust herself off and accept that life is not always linear.
Finally, when I asked Sim to describe self-care in a single sentence, she responded: “caring for myself through yoga/meditation allows me to better care for others.”

Day 6 of 365: Headstand Daily Mantra: I am better than I was and I will be better than I am. I know I said I was only going to post my journey on Instagram but I'm really proud of my headstand. Lol I have been working on this for like 2 months now. Also if you would like to do a shorter yoga challenge. YWAtrue is an awesome one month of yoga challenge. Yoga with Adrienne is my fav. And she's great for begginers!

#marchmeetthemaker DAY 10: YOU • Since it’s day 10 I’ll keep the list theme and will share 10 random facts about me, starting with the pictures (left to right): (1) I’m a Navy Brat and my family had the opportunity to live in Japan two separate times. I still miss it there and hope to go back to visit sometime in the near future. This photo was taken when I was 11 years old. (2) Headstands are my favorite. This one was at Antelope State Park in Utah. Also the most recent photo of the three. (3) I’m married to my best good friend, Chris. This pic is of us after hiking to Lake Anne in Washington State. One of the favorite hikes I’ve been on. (4) Howl’s Moving Castle, Young Frankenstein, V for Vendetta, and Moonrise Kingdom are my favorite movies (5) I love to read (Goodreads link in the bio). Although, I’m not very fast at it. (6) I like using bright color palettes but barely wear bright colors irl. (7) Grass pokemon aren’t my favorite, but I’d always choose Bulbasaur first anyway. (8) I was a competitive swimmer for 8 years 🏊♀️ and swam in 3 state competitions during that time. My main events were the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. (9) I’m currently applying to graduate programs to pursue an MS in Occupational Therapy (10) My husband and I are “cheatin’ vegans”. We eat vegan at home and as often as we can elsewhere, but stick to a vegetarian diet while traveling. • Challenge and prompt list created by @joannehawker . Day 31 of 365 days of cats!
This is so inspired by my yoga experience this morning. My cat, Piper, who has her own yoga mat,
thought it would be fun to play London Bridge with me during my headstands in Ashtanga and there are a lot of them!
She would wait for me to come to position and then walk under as I raised my legs and then would circle back and forth until I came back down. There was no use asking her not to do that since this is the face I probably would have received.
Lucky for her I’ve been practicing a while and don’t usually fall! But it’s hard to hold an upside down pose when you’re laughing.
Life with a cat! Cats can add to your hygge vibe though. A sweet cat, gently purring, curled up with you in your nook as you sip coffee and read. That’s hygge.
That’s comfy. That’s life with a cat even if you have to take it with the London Bridge game during sunrise Ashtanga practice.
Have a beautiful day my friend and meet me back here tomorrow for some off the top of my head free verse!

Today @lkaminoff #yogaanatomy is #supportedshoulderstand or #salambasarvangasana if you prefer the #sanskrit. I'm combing with #handbalance365 123/365 as it's an inversion. I almost never do shoulder stands (for the same reason I used to rarely do headstands, and the reason that once I can make it to a handstand I'll rarely do headstands), but I was feeling limber and strong in my shoulders today so here it is. #yoga #yogaeveryday #gingeryogi #balance #practiceandalliscoming #yogamen #mendoyoga #nomatrequired #longbody #symmetry #stretch #thighs #calves #lowerback #hips #quads #glutes #2xist (at Synchronicity Studios)

Day 18/365 - Headstand practice
Christmas themed headstand log!
I’m incredibly happy with the improvement of my headstands and my ability and form for them is constantly evolving and getting better with every practice. However this month has proven to be challenging mentally:
Being able to fit a practice in everyday this month has been a struggle.
It’s been a very stressful month for myself and finding time for me has been pretty difficult.
Despite life’s stresses it has also been a fantastic month and loved every minute of being home and spending Christmas with my family.
However trying to juggle work, my social life and university assignments, having some me time has proven to be almost impossible.
Not doing yoga everyday makes me feel like I’m failing in it, as if I’m not committed enough to my practice and I should try harder. I know this is not the case and need to remind myself that this is a journey; there are ups and downs and there is no finishing line. Whether it takes 3 years to learn a pose or 3 months, it’s the journey it has taken you to get there that matters, not the ability to do a pose.
Yoga is there to make you feel something (or nothing maybe the practice it meant to make you switch off) it doesn’t matter, there’s no right or wrong and there’s not one way or path to follow in yoga. It is there to make it your own.
May you find your happiness in your practice and always remember to never be too hard on yourself.
Namaste 🙏

When it comes to getting older, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. Despite the ups and downs, you’ve successfully made it through another year. Festivities with friends and family are definitely in order but, once the day winds down and you’ve gotten in the 10,000 steps needed to set off your own fireworks display, it’s time to plan for the year ahead. Remember, not all goals need to be lofty—though kudos to you if a mid-life crisis fuels you to complete a triathlon. Check out this fitness bucket list filled with doable tasks that you can cherry pick from or spread out over the next 365 days to boost your fitness, mindset, and overall health. 1. Hike Your State’s Highest PeakWalking is great for your cardio fitness levels—which can help improve your sleep and even lessen the risk of type 2 diabetes—but if you’re looking to burn more calories, hiking may be the way to go. This year, aim put one big hike on your calendar and then work up to it by adding smaller hikes to your weekly cardio rotation. Not only can you stoke an afterburn effect and boost your energy, research shows you may also improve your mood. 2. Run Your First 5K, Half Marathon, or MarathonHaving set goals with end dates can help you stay motivated, especially when you’re mapping out your checklist for the year. Stay on track by signing up for a planned event, such as a 5K, half marathon, or marathon. Just make sure to take it slow and bump up the mileage gradually before slipping in some speed. 3. Nail a Pull UpThe idea of mastering your first pull-up can be daunting, and may even give you P.E. class flashbacks, but with proper coaching it can be easily mastered. This year, get your first rep by building your lat, biceps, and forearm strength with exercises such as cable pull-downs and machine or band-assisted pull-ups. 4. Master a Tripod HeadstandTurn the year upside down by working towards a tripod headstand, sans wall. You’ll build enough confidence, core strength, and coordination to carry you into the year ahead. Just make sure you have the strength from a strong plank hold, the flexibility from a chaturanga, and the balance from warrior III first. 5. Squat Your Body WeightSquats are a total lower-body builder. This year, make sure they’re a part of your workout routine. Try adding in different variations, like jump squats that boost strength and athleticism and sumo squats for that inner-thigh burn. Looking to kick things up a notch? Add a dumbbell press to turn it into a total-body exercise. 6. Give Cyclocross a ShotGive the road a rest and make this the year you hit new terrain with cyclocross, a type of cycling that takes place off road and includes obstacles. A favorite of Fitbit Ambassador Jens Voigt, cyclocross can help you connect with nature while allowing you to combine a sense of adventure with getting fit. Push yourself by signing up for a race. 7. Hold a Plank for Two MinutesLet this be the year you set a new plank personal record. Besides the ego boost, you’ll reap a stronger core, which will pay off in spades during everyday movements that require support and stabilization. Work up to a 2-minute plank with this 30-day challenge. 8. Do 50 Perfect Push-Ups Or Conquer Harder VariationsSometimes mastering the basics is the best thing you can do. Push-ups are a foundational movement that strengthens and tones your chest, shoulders, and arms, and even helps with core stability. This year, perfect your first push-up and work up to doing 50 in a row, or master different variations, whether that means going from knee push-ups to incline push-ups or from triangle push-ups to walk-overs. 9. Make Meal Prep A PriorityOk, this isn’t a fitness challenge, but if you want to get fit and see results, you’ve got to fuel smart. Adopt a healthy meal-prep strategy that allows you to cook once and eat all week.
