February 12: Week 5, Blog 5

Back home, I do pageants and Puerto Rico is known as one of the powerhouses in pageantry. Coming here, I immediately found a photgrapher who helped me capture this headshot. I dare say this is the best I think I’ve ever looked. Even more than this well-priced photo, the photographer and I had one of the most thought provoking conversations I’ve had here.

Along with taking my picture, he also has photgraphed many formers Miss Puerto Rico winners. There’s so much controversy in the Latino community about why majority of the winners don’t respresent the women of their countries. In Puerto Rico, majority of the winners are fair skinned, white passing, and well over 5’5- which doesn’t begin to reflect the women her. With PR being so passionate about pageants, I wasn’t sure how the photographer would feel once we got onto the subject of the current Miss Universe pageant.

Puerto Rico had placed first runner up to South Africa, the first black South African woman to ever take the title, and already many people had called SA undeserving of her title and attributed it to her dark skin. Incorrectly of me, I assumed my photographer would be no different, being he worked so closely with Miss PR. However, he not only spoke about being there in Atlanta at the Miss Universe pageant, but how deserving he felt Miss SA was. To my surprise, he expressed to me how he too felt the winners of Miss Puerto Rico could better reflect the women.

Now, under the new administration of the Miss Puerto Rico pageant, the last two winners already reflect the diversity of PR. The previous winner is brown skinned, like majority of the women here, and the current winner is actually half Puerto Rican and from Florida, representing the mixed heritage of many Puerto Rican’s.

As someone who loves pageants, it was a privilege to come to one of the biggest places in pageantry and discuss with someone just as passionate as me (if not, much more) about what’s happening in the pageant world. I’m not Latina, but for a long time the only black women winning in pageants were fair skin ones, and now the world has been shaken by having a dark skin Miss America, Miss Universe and Miss World. I recognize the importance of all skin colors being represented on a big platform, and I look forward to how Puerto Rico will pay tribute to their beautiful myriad of skin tones here.
