Is it safe to turn off your car engine when stopped at an intersection or stop sign for a short period of time (less than 30 seconds)?
Truck drivers keep their lights on when they stop to rest. The reasons are mainly as follows, which are analyzed in combination with industry characteristics and technical background:
Safety warning needs
Night parking warning
Trucks are large in size. When parking on the roadside or in informal parking lots at night, turning on the lights (especially width lights or parking lights) can significantly improve vehicle visibility and avoid rear-end collisions due to poor visibility. The "night parking lights" function of some vehicles will automatically light up the lights on the side close to the road to alert other vehicles.
Special scene requirements
On dark roads without street lights or tunnel exits, keeping the lights on can help drivers adapt to the environment faster when restarting, while warning pedestrians and non-motor vehicles.
Environmental and driving habit factors
Fatigue driving resistance
Long-distance driving can easily lead to fatigue. Some drivers keep the lights on to maintain their mental state, and strong light environments may help relieve drowsiness.
Equipment dependence and misoperation
Automatic lighting system: Some trucks are equipped with "automatic headlights" or "go home with me" functions, and the low beam lights may be kept on by default for several minutes after the engine is turned off.
Mistaken switch: The driver may accidentally turn on the parking lights or daytime running lights when operating the light control.
Regulations and industry norms
Mandatory requirements in some regions
Some states in the United States require that taillights must be turned on when parking at night. Although there is no such mandatory regulation in China, industry habits may be affected by this.
Platform algorithm and operational pressure
Some logistics platforms require drivers to upload location information in real time. Keeping the lights on may be mistaken for the vehicle being in working condition to avoid platform misjudgment.
Technical and economic considerations
Balance between battery loss and cost
Turning on the lights for a long time will consume battery power, but some drivers are more inclined to accept battery loss than frequently starting and stopping the engine when parking (increasing fuel consumption and carbon deposit risks).
Impact of equipment modification
Some trucks are modified with high-brightness LED lights or additional lighting equipment, resulting in light brightness close to the effect of high beams, which may be mistaken for turning on high beams illegally.
Potential risks and suggestions
Safety hazards
Over-reliance on lights may mask the driver's fatigue and increase the risk of accidents.
High-brightness lights may interfere with other vehicles and cause road rage or accidents.
Optimization suggestions
Use the "Auto Start and Stop" function to balance battery loss and safety needs.
Choose a compliant parking light mode (such as turning on only the width lights) to avoid abusing the high beam.
In summary, the behavior of truck drivers keeping the lights on is the result of the combined effect of safety needs, industry habits and technical conditions, and its rationality needs to be evaluated in combination with specific scenarios.

I somehow accidentally managed to end up with completely different lightbulbs in every single one of the lights in my bedroom.
It’s exactly as awful as you might expect and I can’t use more the one light at once until I decide which warmth I am going to commit to.
#the bright white that’s neeearly blue is a no. the LED headlights of interior lighting.#the bright neutral white can stay for the Big Light#the other options are warm white and warmer white like how is it that warm yet not yellow?#(spoiler: the winner is going to be whatever kind of spare bulbs are in the storage closet)#(that’s also how I got into this snafu of horrifically clashing lighting in the first place btw)

Baby car, I love you so much. You were so beautiful.
Neighbor thinks he can get the hood to sit back into the latch. Core support has been switched out and EVERYTHING we needed to take off to get to it - is back. Well, except the grill. I'm not putting that back on until my neighbor is satisfied with beating the shit out of my car.
I need transmission cooler lines. :( I dunno if I can do that. Think I can just ... tape the pinhole leak?
#to be fair ... I think the transmission cooler lines has been a long term problem#I need a new headlight assembly before I deem this safe again too#the exposed bulb is not good#but the light projection is even worse than the bullshit I've been dealing with since switching off my beloved halogens

changed my headlights today, feeling super accomplished
#a week and a half ago one of my tail lights went out#and I bought the replacement bulbs for $14 and my dad helped me replace them and it took like an hour#and then today one of my headlights went out so I bought the bulbs for $52 and then I replaced them both in 5 minutes total#feeling very proud of myself#I definitely saved money doing it myself and now I know how to do it for next time#I really thought the headlights would have been more difficult to replace than the tail lights but actually they were way easier

Should LED headlights be illegal?
Should LED Headlights Be Illegal? A Legal and Safety Analysis The legality of LED headlights depends on compliance with regulations and proper installation, rather than the technology itself. Here’s a breakdown of key considerations based on current laws and safety standards:
1. Legal Framework for LED Headlights** China’s Regulatory Stance In China, LED headlights are not inherently illegal, but unauthorized modifications are strictly prohibited. According to national standards (e.g., GB 4599-2007 and GB 25991-2010), LED headlights must meet the same beam intensity, focus, and glare limits as traditional halogen bulbs. For example, the maximum allowable brightness for high beams is 150,000 candela.
Key Point: Replacing bulbs with certified, factory-equivalent LED units is legal, while retrofitting non-compliant LED assemblies or altering beam patterns violates regulations. U.S. and International Standards In the U.S., LED products must comply with safety and electromagnetic interference standards (e.g., FCC Part 15, UL 588). Internationally, UN Regulation No. 112 aligns with China’s requirements, emphasizing consistent beam limits for LEDs and halogens.
2. Safety Concerns Driving Regulation** Glare and Driver Safety Poorly designed or illegally modified LED headlights can emit excessive glare, blinding oncoming drivers and increasing accident risks. Complaints about "overly bright" LEDs prompted regulatory bodies like China’s MIIT to reaffirm enforcement of glare limits.
Example: A 2021 government response highlighted that illegal retrofits (e.g., using uncertified LED modules) are a primary cause of dangerous glare. Thermal and Electrical Risks Non-compliant LED installations may lack proper heat dissipation or voltage regulation, risking circuit damage or fires.
3. Enforcement and Penalties** Legal Consequences of Non-Compliance In China, unauthorized LED modifications can result in fines (200–2,000 RMB), mandatory restoration of original parts, and failed annual inspections. For instance, altering headlight housings or using non-standard LED color temperatures (e.g., blue or purple) is explicitly banned.
Case Study: A driver in Shanghai was fined 500 RMB for installing aftermarket LED bulbs without certification, as they caused glare violations. Global Trends Similar enforcement exists in the U.S., where states like California mandate adherence to SAE/ANSI lighting standards. Non-compliant products face recalls or import bans.
4. Why LED Headlights Should Not Be Universally Banned** Technological Advantages LEDs offer superior energy efficiency, longer lifespan, and better illumination compared to halogens. Properly designed LEDs enhance nighttime visibility without exceeding glare limits.
Data Point: Certified LED headlights reduce energy consumption by 50–70% compared to halogens. Regulatory Solutions Over Bans Instead of banning LEDs, stricter enforcement of existing standards and public education on legal retrofit practices can address misuse. For example, requiring professional installation and certification labels would mitigate risks.
Conclusion LED headlights should not be illegal if they comply with safety and performance standards. The core issue lies in illegal modifications and non-compliant products, not the technology itself. Governments should focus on:
Strengthening certification processes for LED upgrades. Penalizing unauthorized retrofits. Educating drivers on proper usage (e.g., avoiding high beams in traffic). By balancing innovation with regulation, LED headlights can remain a safe, sustainable option for modern vehicles.

It's weird that this photo is how I learned that Disney's Lady and the Tramp is older than I am.
(Looking at Wikipedia, I'm guessing I must have seen it in the 1986 re-release.)
((Back before home video, Disney used to have their classic kids' movies back in theaters from time to time. What's funny is that I remember being aware that Snow White and Song of the South were not new when I saw them, but somehow I never picked up that Lady and the Tramp also wasn't.))
Anyway my dad also had that hairstyle and beard around that time. I've seen it in my baby pictures.

Tower Records, Tacoma Washington, 1978
#history#record stores#auto parts stores also used to have a big book like that where you'd look up your make/model/year#and find out what headlight bulbs or windshield wiper blades would go on your car

How to make your headlights brighter - HID Bulb Review
A number of years ago, I replaced my original 2008 Prius headlights with a cool set of aftermarket projector assemblies with lighted angel eyes. It was a nice upgrade and they look awesome. Unfortunately, since then, I had been suffering with low light output. When I was living in the city, it wasn’t really a problem, but when I retired and moved out to the country, driving along the unlit…
