A report has been published on the overarching effects of russia attacking ukrainian power infrastructure, especially in winter. As well as medical facilities.
An excerpt:
Before the full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, Ukraine boasted one of the most developed power sectors in Europe, with universal access to electricity. However, by June 2024, available capacity had plummeted by 85 percent due to Russia’s systematic attacks on energy infrastructure. Russia has blocked gas transit to Ukraine, seized assets, launched cyberattacks, and, since October 2022, systematically bombed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. By September 2024, Russia had allegedly destroyed all thermal power plants and nearly all large hydroelectric power plants.
Data collected by TH and PHR since the start of the full-scale invasion shows that the cumulative impacts of Russia’s direct attacks on health facilities, as well as strikes on energy infrastructure with reported impact on health care facilities, have impeded health care delivery and endangered patients and health care workers alike. For example, since the start of the full-scale invasion, health care workers and patients at the Okhmatdyt National Specialized Children’s Hospital have faced multiple attacks that have caused death and suffering. Airstrikes shattered its windows in March 2022, forcing vulnerable patients, including terminally ill and immunocompromised children, to be treated underground despite the grave health risks of doing so. On October 10, 2022 – the day that Russia began its large-scale aerial assault on Ukrainian energy infrastructure – a missile strike killed one of Okhmatdyt’s doctors as she drove to work. In the months that followed, frequent power outages lasting up to several days resulted in lights shutting off in all departments but intensive care. The energy cuts jeopardized patient health by interrupting or delaying surgeries; forcing surgeons to operate in darkness illuminated only by headlamps; discontinuing flow of water to the hospital, creating unhygienic conditions; and rendering diagnostic and treatment equipment unusable.
A survey of 2,261 health care workers conducted as part of this research project indicates that the experiences of clinicians in Mariupol and Okhmatdyt hospitals are far from unique. Key findings from the survey include:
The overwhelming majority (92.3 percent) of health care workers report experiencing power outages at their health facility as a result of attacks on energy infrastructure.
Two-thirds of health care workers (66.3 percent) reported that power outages due to attacks on energy infrastructure affected medical procedures in their facilities.
Specifically, 8.4 percent noted delays in elective surgeries, 1.7 percent experienced interruptions during surgery, and 1.8 percent reported failures in life support systems due to outages.
Outages disrupted communication systems (35.7 percent), water supply (21.5 percent), heating and ventilation (19 percent), and elevators (16.5 percent).
7.8 percent of respondents noted malfunctions in diagnostic equipment, such as X-ray machines and MRIs due to outages. Medication storage issues, leading to spoilage, were reported by 13.8 percent, and 3.6 percent informed about problems with storing biological samples like blood or embryos.
Permanent health harms (36 reports) and deaths (20 reports) were also reported.
82.9 percent of health workers experienced increased stress, burnout, and other challenges due to these attacks on energy infrastructure and disruption of services, with 27 percent facing these hardships daily.
#war in ukraine#russia is a terrorist state#charge russia with war crimes and genocide#I want everyone to shut up immediately about russia not attacking hospitals and health care workers

7:45pm - it’s dark out, not quite pitch black, but probably would be if I didn’t live in a neighborhood with street lamps. Even with them, it’s dark. Our neighbor decided now would be the time to mow their lawn. Wearing a headlamp and pushing a gas guzzling mower that is spouting plumes of exhaust and will likely wake up the kids. I know they probably have to work, I respect that, I suppose this may be their only chance? But it’s frustrating, particularly because of the noise and air pollution. It’s making taking the dog outside irritating.
Other than that it’s a nice night, crisp and clear and the beginning of fall. Fall is my favorite season; I love apple picking, I love hayrides, I love sweatshirts, I love apple cider and warm blankets on cold nights. I love being cozy and cuddling in front of a fire with my kids to watch Halloweentown. Fall also has my favorite holiday: Halloween.
I hated Halloween as a college student. Drunken parties with forced ridiculous costumes. Not my scene at all. I love our Halloween now. Making it magical for my kids, trick or treating in the nearby (rich, let’s be honest) community where people on an entire street decorate their houses with huge displays complete with dry ice and animatronic spiders and even the people handing out candy are witches and vampires and maybe try to trick you just a little. The street we go to every year is closed to traffic (only on Halloween) and so the kids and adults roam in hoards of glowing costumes. Last year it rained and people still came out in droves, tossing ponchos over their costumes and carrying umbrellas decorated in bats. It’s ridiculous. It’s the best.
We also hit up the business district where we live. The shopkeepers (antiquated British word but I can’t think of another) that we see during the week come to the doors of their shops and hand out candy, complimenting the kids’ costumes. We see our barber, the coffee folks, the dentist (who hands out toothbrushes, of course). They normally dress up too, and a couple are really committed to decorating their stores. We walk through the business district for over a mile until we reach the local Y, where there’s a big free party, complete with bouncy houses and pizza. It’s chaotic. Bright lights compared to outdoors, pounding Halloween music, kids running wild, covered in paint and glue from the crafts, stuffing hastily decorated cobweb cupcakes in their mouths.
I don’t know how or why I got so lucky as to have kids who can do all that. Who somehow, despite the trauma and pain of the past, can regulate in the fun chaos of Halloween and just be kids. It’s a joy to watch, it’s the only night I let the kids stay up past bedtime. The only night they somehow manage to not meltdown and to have fun. Sure, sometimes feet get stomped or someone screeches because an animatronic spider touched their shoulder, but they love it.
I don’t think I’m doing it justice, the fact that for one night a year my kids get to be kids. I don’t know how I did it, but every year I counted and planned to ensure that post-visit behaviors wouldn’t impact Halloween. The years we lost to COVID and residential treatment still pain me. But regardless, every single year since my kids came home we have been together on Halloween, and it’s one of the few things that is ours as a family.

The owl hunters. (Washington Post)
A female northern spotted owl. (Alexandra Hootnick for The Washington Post)
A barred owl sits in a tree after being drawn in by a call. (Alexandra Hootnick for The Washington Post)
Excerpt from this Washington Post story:
The hooting had died down and the two bird lovers faced the immensity of the dark forest.
Scanning his light among the redwoods, Danny Hofstadter listened. The distant ocean sounded like wind. There was nothing more from the barred owl that he and his colleague, Madeleine Cameron, had been stalking.
“I hate the silent treatment,” Hofstadter said.
They slung their shotguns over their shoulders and hiked on.
Here among the world’s tallest trees, Hofstadter and Cameron are part of a tiny band of biologists holding the line against an invasion that threatens to push the northern spotted owl, an icon of the Pacific Northwest, into extinction. The birds’ decline, accelerated by an encroaching rival, has become so dire that it led the scientists here: Four nights a week, they strap on headlamps and slip into the forests of Northern California to kill barred owls.
Their work is part of an ongoing study by the University of Wisconsin to assess whether removing the barred owl, a species spreading with abandon down the West Coast, will help the spotted owl survive and protect the wider ecosystem. But these nocturnal hunts are now expanding beyond research. The federal government in August approved a plan to kill up to nearlyhalf a million barred owls over the next three decades.
This effort is one of the country’s most audacious attempts to stop the spread of a species the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers invasive. Opponents have decried the policy as sanctioning a mass killing, picking winners in a competition among two owls of similar size and appearance, birds that sometimes even interbreed.
Some environmental and birding organizations reluctantly endorsed the Fish and Wildlife Service’s management plan — a “gut-wrenching” call, as Birds Connect Seattle put it. Other animal welfare groups remain staunchly opposed. Animal Wellness Action, a nonprofit that described the new approach as “wholesale slaughter,” filed suit last month in federal court to block the program.
The group’s president, Wayne Pacelle, described the management plan as both inhumane and futile, attempting to limit a fast-spreading owl that is native to North America and protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
“The plan is doomed to fail,” Pacelle said. “You’re going to get on a killing treadmill that the Fish and Wildlife Service can never step off of.”

stevie adjusted their headlamp, the beam slicing through the thick, stagnant air of the abandoned asylum. the building loomed above them, its crumbling façade whispering secrets of a bygone era. they tightened her grip on their flashlight, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. urban exploring had always been their escape, a way to channel her curiosity and thirst for adventure—a way to get them out of their computer. but this place...this place was different. they glanced at their watch, the hands glowing faintly in the dim light. wondering how soon the others were supposed to arrive. they had all eagerly accepted the mysterious invitation to explore the infamous asylum. The email had been brief, promising untold secrets and an experience like no other. and a prize if they lasted until morning—or whatever that was supposed to mean. stevie took a deep breath, her heart pounding with the thrill of the unknown. they had arrived early, wanting to get a feel for the place before the rest of the group showed up. the air inside was cooler, carrying the faint, eerie scent of decay. they could almost hear the echoes of the past in the silence that enveloped her. "here goes nothing," they muttered to themself, stepping through the broken entrance. the hallway stretched before them, long and foreboding. peeling paint hung from the walls like old scars, and every shadow seemed to hold a story. stevie's footsteps echoed down the empty corridor as they moved cautiously, their eyes darting around. they'd heard the rumors about this place—an asylum where patients had been more like prisoners, subjected to horrifying experiments. it was the perfect setting for the urban legend to take root, but standing here now, stevie couldn't help but wonder how much truth there was to the stories. they paused at a rusted gurney in the corner of what must have once been a treatment room. the sight of it sent a shiver down their spine. as their mind started to wonder, trying to imagine the things that had happened here, the pain and fear that must have permeated these walls, more footsteps echoed from the entrance, making them startle and go back to the entrance, their heart making flips inside their chest and totally ruining their cool persona. "took you long enough," they said, approaching the group. there were four of them, and aside from their complicated interpersonal history, they still showed up for one another. "this place is every bit of creepy we thought it would be."
closed starter for @ruindgod plot — a group of urban explorers ventures into an abandoned mental asylum rumored to be haunted (house on haunted hill meets 1408, but make it all in the 90s). we can have a mumu and play all characters, if you'd like.

14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
22. Do you know how your fic will end before you start writing?
Thanks for the ask!
14. Thistle, you already know the answer to this one. A World of His Own would make an excellent comic. Jailbreak Squad all the way.
17. There’s a LOT I could go with, but I’m gonna have to say the two people in history know to have performed an appendectomy (surgery to remove the appendix) on themselves.
Evan O’Neill Kane, American physician and surgeon active from the 1880’s to the 1930’s, specialized in emergency trauma surgery for railroad workers, and was known for several innovations in this field, including weaving bandages from asbestos (which allowed them to be quickly sterilized with fire in the days before pre-sterilized bandages were available), multiple-needle subcutaneous (under the skin) infusions to replace IV infusion after hemorrhages, and a type of headlamp for nighttime operations. He was an advocate of local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia (which at the time was primarily ether) for some major surgeries, particularly in cases where the patient had a medical condition that made the use of ether unsafe. To experience an appendectomy from a patient’s perspective, he performed the procedure on himself under local anesthesia. He had previously amputated one of his own fingers, and would go on to repair his own inguinal hernia. He was also known for tattooing a small letter K in Morse code next to the closed surgical incision on his patients, and for tattooing mothers and new babies with small matching marks in inconspicuous places to prevent mix-ups. This man was deeply unhinged and I respect the hell out of him.
To talk about someone equally worthy of deep respect and admiration but far more reasonable, Leonid Ivanovich Rogozov was a Soviet physician stationed in Antarctica when he came down with appendicitis. As the only doctor within a thousand miles, after conservative treatments failed and his condition continued to worsen, he decided to operate on himself, which he did with the aid of novocaine, a meteorologist and a driver as assistants, and a mirror which he abandoned midway through the procedure due to the difficulty of adjusting to the reversed movement, relying on touch instead. The operation was completed in about two hours, and Rogozov was back to normal duties in two weeks.
People are fucking awesome.
22. Usually. I’m definitely more likely to finish the story if I do. Of course, more often I know exactly how the story is going to end but not how I’m going to get there, which presents its own problems… and there’s always the possibility that the story will throw me a hard left turn halfway through. It’s all part of the fun!

Warm Clothing
The temperatures on the trek to Kareri Lake Himachal Pradesh can fluctuate significantly, with daytime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 18°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to as low as -6°C. Packing appropriate clothing is crucial to keep yourself warm and comfortable. Make sure to bring:
Thermal Innerwear
A fleece jacket
A windproof and waterproof jacket
Warm gloves, a cap and a scarf
Woollen socks (bring extra pairs) These will help you stay warm in the cold and unpredictable mountain weather.
Comfortable Footwear
A good pair of trekking shoes with a strong grip is essential for this moderate-to-hard trek. The path from Kareri Village to Kareri Lake involves steep climbs and rocky terrain, making sturdy shoes a must. Additionally, pack a pair of extra comfortable footwear to wear around the campsite.
Backpack and Daypack
A comfortable, lightweight backpack with padded straps and a rain cover is ideal for the trek. If possible, carry a smaller daypack for essential items like water, snacks and a flashlight during the trek from Dharmshala to Kareri Lake.
Water and Snacks
Staying hydrated is key to maintaining your energy levels, especially in high-altitude treks like Kareri Himachal Pradesh. Carry a reusable water bottle and keep it filled at all times. Along with that, pack some energy bars, dry fruits and snacks like chocolates or biscuits for a quick boost during your trek.
First Aid Kit and Medications
Being at an altitude of 2950 meters means it’s essential to be prepared for altitude sickness or other minor injuries. Your first aid kit should include:
Basic bandages, antiseptic cream and gauze
Medications for headaches, nausea and body pain
Personal medications if you are under any medical treatment Don’t forget to carry a few altitude sickness tablets just in case you feel unwell during the trek.

Environmental Responsibility
Keep the environment clean and avoid littering during your Kareri Lake Himachal Pradesh adventure. Carry a small trash bag to collect your waste and dispose of it properly once you reach the campsite or back to the village. The beauty of Kareri Lake should be preserved for future trekkers.
