What software do you use to make your book graphics for social media? You make really nice ones :)

I use a mixture of things

Canva is my quick go-to for making things for social media when I don't want to have to faff around looking up the sizes. They also update their template sizes (like Twitter header, Twitter ad, insta story, etc) if the dimensions change, so that's nice.

You can also upload your own high-res stuff there and use them, or you can mess around with their templates. Some of the stuff is premium use only, so that's a downside.

To generate the book images, I upload the cover art into places like bookbrush.com or diybookcovers.com, depending on what I want to create. Bookbrush allows for some more complicated things, diybookcovers is very simple and works well, especially if you just want kindle/phone graphics.

For my mood board stuff, I use places like unsplash.com to look for images that vibe and are free for commercial use, and then I use befunky.com to make the actual collages because it's actually better than Canva's collage maker and also works on my phone.

A lot of it is stuff I can use on my phone for the days when I am bedbound. Hence why some of it makes graphic designers cringe lol.

UK4: When a Star Falls (1984) is a great example of that often ambiguous UK style. Here it manifests in a strong graphic design, particularly in the maps, but also in the titles and the page header (which feature quotes and visual coding using cropped illustrations for different sections).

It is also very British in other ways. It’s pretty plot heavy and features lots of Fiend Folio monsters (so many Derro!). It also, as the title implies, has an astronomical impetus, which isn’t uniquely British, but does seem to be a recurring theme in the Old World, with Morrsleib the Chaos Moon raining warpstones down on the countryside.

Oh, and this adventure has the single most unique hook put to paper, I think. The party encounters (and hopefully kills) a memory web, which in its death throes then imprints the memories of its last meal on the characters, via a list of fragmentary details, a collage-like illustration and some important geographic data. This is a real maestro game design moment, handing everything the players need to proceed in a singularly weird way. No one who plays it will ever forget it!

The adventure is basically a series of fetch quests. Get the fallen star (from the derros), bring it to the sages (who are dealing with a coup, the instigator of which has sent a memorable agent out to get the star for himself), who then want to send it to to the svirfneblin (did I spell that right?) in exchange for a book. Both subterranean regions feel a lot like the underdark. The various faction motivations feel rich. The whole thing doesn’t really have a climax (aside of a weird battle with red dragons), but that doesn’t matter, it still manages to feel complete. This is the best UK-module so far.

In no small part because of the art by Jeremy “Jes” Goodwin, who would come to define much Games Workshop’s Warhammer universe in the coming years.

I’m getting into writing and I wanted to know how you make your headers for the fics and how you come up with titles for them

Coming up with titles can have various ways, you can take inspiration from songs (titles or lyrics), books (titles or quotes), fics, even pinterest or from your own fic. It can be a quote or a word that's in your fic and name it that. I personally get inspo from either songs or my own fics, it usually matches the vibe, the theme and the plot better that way.

For the headers, I'm not sure if you're talking about the ones like a collage with the title written on it or collection of pics you directly put on your post. But either way, finding the complementary desired pics and then editing them to fit the theme and the vibe of the fic is the best thing you can do. Apps like Polarr and picsart (or pixlr on the web esp) should give you enough tools for the editing.

Now:

Chapter Six

we start off the chapter with EP and a friend at dinner

EP is living with this friend at the time

earlier in the day that we start into, EP had to call the police about a stalker

the stalker started off as a pen pal when EP was first on TV at the age of 11

EP diverges into telling us what she likes about acting, and surprise surprise, it's "being anyone but who I am"

EP has a music teacher who told her to "stop roughing up the boys at recess" which, you know, same

EP realizes that acting means she will have to wear "girl" costumes, which, you know, duh

EP there is a 900% chance that you did not know they were "cis" boys nor did you refer to them as "cis" boys because no one talked about people as "cis" when you were 11.

Also, "how is that not you"? They're wearing costumes! You are also wearing a costume for what sounds like some sort of historical drama? No one is wearing "suspenders, knickers" in modern-day Canada except in their Mennonite or Hutterite communities.

EP makes a website with basic HTML for school

a man contacts her through it

she likes it because she likes feeling "seen" - the man said he could understand her feelings

he probably could because he was like twenty-eight

we once again digress into the Canadian Part of the story, where I learn that the drive between Toronto (close to where I used to live) and Halifax (where I went on vacation once) is two days

EP and her mom would eat ketchup chips on vacation because, of course, Canadian

back to the pen pal

he is a Creepy Fuck who makes collages of her with angel wings

EP jumps headfirst into an eating disorder which starts by hearing a voice in her head

during what is going to be a very serious moment about a stalker, we take a header into Canadian Stuff because OF COURSE we do

Did you know Toronto is the Raccoon Capital of the World? OF THE WORLD? Jesus, I'm glad I moved... they could have definitely overrun my small town

apparently 100,000 raccoons live in Toronto

2.93 million people live in Toronto, just for a further demographic

anyway, back to the part that matters:

the Creepy Fuck emails all of EP's friends trying to find out where she is

he finds out

EP and her friend call the police

the police are worried and she gets a restraining order against him

we once again play All These People Are Shitheads

the Creepy Fuck FINDS HER, because of course he does

he tries to get her to take a walk with him

she runs

he gets arrested

he has schizophrenia

she does not press charges

things go from Bad to Worse because we are well and truly out of control at this point

EP decides that she will stop eating

she tells us that trans and gender-non-conforming youth are more likely to struggle with eating disorders

I did some research even though I feel like shit trying to correct her in her own sad book, but I am a very specific type of asshole

we know that female individuals are most likely to have eating disorders; I'm sure that now a lot of those female people are trans men and enbys

I had no idea that gay and bisexual men and boys made up almost half of male sufferers of eating disorders

anyway, EP starts doubling down on an eating disorder

I need a moment of levity so I will say that I would eat the fuck out of a Fear Sandwich if it was served at a cool restaurant or a nifty food truck

anyway, back into Hell

We've come to the end of the chapter which is good because I am so incredibly upset about all of this. I thought I was going to be able to do two chapters today since I didn't do much else, but Jesus fuck this book is so incredibly sad.

EP, you can have my dad. We can share dads. He is a very good dad. He would not come to Toronto to kick your ass... he would have come to Toronto to be comforting and to be very involved with everything. He was so concerned for my safety online that he told me that I had to give a fake name to the Christian women in my "Touched by an Angel" fanfic mail chain when I was fourteen, even though all we really did was tell each other we were praying for whatever causes they brought up and sending around new chapters of fic. I think I told them my name was Rachel.

My dad is funny but not at the expense of his children. He's been married to my mom for almost forty years and they love all three of us, let us be our own people throughout our childhoods. He is so incredibly proud of us, for wherever we are in our lives. He would have been proud of you and he would have fought for you the same way he fought for me when I got sick, the same way he fights for my disabled sister's care, the same way he stood up for my baby sister when she punched a kid in junior high because said kid was teasing her and the school wanted to suspend her.

(And this might just be me being selfish, but you are a few months older than I am and I would have loved an older sister. Again, we could have been weird together.)

My point is, you deserved better people around you. You still do. No matter what, you did not deserve this - from your father or from your stalker. You deserved to be a kid, and to be happy, and to eat.

And now I need to go eat, because reading this reminded me I haven't done that yet. Maybe I'll make a Fear Sandwich.

we've been freaking out about the human capacity for creation with our friends for multiple days now. just randomly thinking about some wild shit we've seen over the years that would NEVER make it big anywhere except the internet because of how niche the concept is. and yet these people still create things even if it's never going to be seen by more than maybe 1000 other people before the hunan race goes extinct.

we've seen pixelated screenshots of old 3d games combined with seemingly nonsense yet esoteric text you only barely understand the true meaning of overlayed on a translucent coloured window that allows you to see the background that looks like it was made with ms paint.

we've seen comics made solely from collage.

we've seen what looks like hastily cobbled together edits of images as a header above confusing fanfiction of an obscure video game nobody ever heard of or vared about using big words seemingly ripped straight from a thesaurus.

we've seen a person role play as the sacrificial vessel of a fictional dead god solely through a twitter account and then make it into a book using the tweets they made alongside extra material they created over the YEARS they kept that project going.

And that's just ONLINE stuff. Who KNOWS what kinds of creative shit you could find irl if you look hard enough. human beings are hella creative and to be in a time of human history where all that is possible is genuinely mind-blowing.

Sure, humans can suck. But they can also be creative and wonderful as all hell, and if you're in a place in your life where it's safe for you to do so, then you shouldn't let the people who do suck dictate what you can and can't do.

Make that collage art comic.

Write that fiction story with words you don't even fully understand the definitions of and place it on a website that looks like it was ripped straight from the 90s.

Create that modern art piece consisting of a white box fan placed into a clear container with holes in it to let you feel the breeze from the moving fan.

If you want to do something creative, do something creative.

QUICK EDIT: Actually, talking about the box fan thing, you should probably just find where the actual piece is located and/or at least look up the story behind it because it's as beautiful as it is heartwrenching.

If that's the sense of your question, it's called Crow Club Encyclopedia and I made the collage myself with vintage copyright-free images. I had made it for the Dear Netflix book for the Save Shadow and Bone campaign, but they ended up not including it in the book.
