i am playing around with the idea of naturally ending chilchuck/his wife as a narrative, with a lot of headcanon interpolation of events. this is led by my fanfic brain which is looking at a different end game. i am marcilling it.
canonically he did not contact his daughters or wife for those years after she left. i struggle to imagine how it must feel for your life partner to let you disappear from his life and stopped contacting your shared kids at the same time, diving even more headfirst into his work that made you feel abandoned in the first place.
i think chilchuck thinks he is doing what is best for them by working hard on improving the respect for half-foots and not telling them about his work life. i can see him thinking that this is too much for them to worry about, so he can protect them by not disclosing anything but a censored version of events, minimizing the danger and death he faces whenever he leaves. i think before he started working in the dungeon, he was a lot more open about it with her, back when the complaints were just shitty customers.
but its not like she wouldnt notice, once he started advocating for higher safety regulations. like. what if each time he came home, he had some new frightening clause to add to his contract, and brushed off her attempts to get details as to why he put it there? and that feeling is not something their kids would be able to overlook once they get old enough to go from parent-child caretaker to parent-child friendship/advisor.
so yeah! when she actually meets his coworkers and realizes how much he has been leaving out about his life, its like he is a totally different person than the man she has been living with for the past 13 years. she has been lied to through omission, and he cant read the room that she needed him to trust her. so, she does something drastic to get his attention (and, very importantly, give herself fulfillment). and then he never calls, never writes, never reaches out for years of her life.
personally i think it would make sense for her to find something of her own, like a hobby or job, after her children have grown, and through that there could someone who can give her enough emotional support to fall in love again.
by the time he returns, he was a good man and great father, but a lousy husband, and she does not want to throw away the happiness she found without him. i think they loved each other for so long that it would be easy to fall back into that fondness after they both had a serious couple of conversations. but the ship to go back to how things were has sailed, and neither of them should try to go back to how things were. there is still love there, just in a different form than it was before.
i guess i kinda like the idea of growth that is staggered from each other due to their communication problems, if i had to make them lines moving in parallel. they fell out of sync understanding each other, and by the time they caught back up, they have missed the window to be as close as they were before. kinda a "right place, wrong time" by the time chilchuck has finished canon. i think there is beauty in the imperfections of damaged relationships, the fallibility of human nature, healing by falling apart.
could they have both been that loyal to the commitment and still work hard to fall back into love? i think its possible, but it should be as difficult as it needs to be for both of them to feel like this is a real change. chilchuck retiring might make that easier or harder for her- less stressful job, but he needs to actually put aside time for them and not fixate on his career, which would be hard if he is still a driving force behind civil movements on top of starting his business.

Dungeon lord Chilchuck
What would his wish as a dungeon lord be? What would he be like? Headcanons & speculation post for fun. But Iā€™ll start with analytic lead up because thatā€™s always fun for me, though feel free to skip and skim.
When it comes to what Chilchuckā€™s dungeon lord desires could/would be like we have mainly 3 hints: His nightmare, his succubus and what the winged lion says to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why: ā€” From what we see nightmares are based on the personā€™s worst fears and insecurities, both Laiosā€™ and Marcilleā€™s nightmare were closely tied to their dungeon lord wishes (Laiosā€™ dream monster being summoned to crush the ghosts of relationships that represented the pressure to fit in and belong, Marcille seeking control over death and aging through magic to avoid loss), the fuel behind their desire/goal if you will. Fear and deep-seated desires are seemingly closely tied, something also supported by Thistle and Mithrunā€™s reigns as dungeon lords (Thistle proving his worth through fulfilling his given duty + protecting his loved ones, being listened to instead of having to listen, Mithrun escaping rigid two-faced elven society and living in a wonderland where he has no enemies and heā€™s loved, free from everyone he knew yet propped up by the person symbolizing his brother being chosen over him, the bastard child).
ā€” Iā€™ve talked about the significance I assign to the succubi often by now, but rundown: What we see of each character is all very telling if you care to listen, it shows not only someoneā€™s "ideal form" but what they want from it. Izutsumiā€™s is familial, offering a hug and comfort, Marcilleā€™s is romantic with a character she knows and loves, offering a kiss on a hand and a connection regardless of how distant it actually is, and Laiosā€™ is platonic, arguable at first but then Laiosā€™ fear of judgement is placated and he is offered the picture perfect friend group that accepts his interest (if you want my full look at Laiosā€™ succubus go here). They take on the most alluring form, most ideal person of their victim, even uncovering deep subconscious desires, so precisely and effectively to the point it leaves victims physically frozen before the object of their desire. Succubi and the demon are themselves tied in lore and itā€™s easy to see how similar their core skill are. Succubi donā€™t give a good idea of what a character would wish for on their own but they certainly give hints on what they crave, regardless of how you want to read it.
ā€” Last bit is self-explanatory. To placate Chilchuck and win his compliance over, the monster that reads your soul like an open book offers to give him something specific. But! Itā€™s also important to remember that the lion isnā€™t offering to fulfill Chilchuckā€™s dream world wish here, itā€™s a second prize, because his goal with what he promised Laios is that theyā€™d stay in this world, away from everyone and everything else. Chilchuck wants to get away but is kept back, and itā€™s here the lion placates him with "hey itā€™s okay! You canā€™t do that but I can still give you this! This is enough right? Itā€™ll make everything easier on you".
What each bit says: ā€” Long version in another post. Tldlr: His daughters and family are obviously important to him, and this reinforces that he takes on the role of protector a lot, heā€™s constantly worried for his party membersā€™ lives and implicitly his familyā€™s. Safety and stability, both economical and otherwise, are his core values and goals, and he berates both others and himself if someone fails on those fronts. Here, thereā€™s the fear of not being enough, of not having been able to protect, and of course of loss.
ā€” Chilā€™s succubi are obviously sexual, and not only that but agressively and straightforwardly so. Itā€™s not like Marcilleā€™s where thereā€™s personality involved, all they do is give him sultry looks and pretty smiles before jumping on him. His succubi arenā€™t like Izutsumiā€™s, always the same exact person and appearance, so itā€™s not someone but an appealing general idea. The idea of a sexual being he can regard as simply a gorgeous piece of meat and a good time no strings attached. In my interpretation, especially with my reading of Laiosā€™ succubus where even with deep-seated desires negative emotions can be too intense to effectively freeze a victim, I think this doesnā€™t contradict his character. Relationships have been painful to him in the past, in the succubus scene when his wife gets mentioned his immediate reaction is to yell "Donā€™t bring her up now!", like with his habit of drinking and as a tallman liking his senses feeling dulled, itā€™s about not having to feel emotions with how difficult they are to deal with sometimes and just feeling good, or at least not having to think, for a while. If a succubus showcases someoneā€™s ideal connection with an ideal person, then Chilchuckā€™s is with a pretty person that doesnā€™t stir any negative memory or drama, someone low stakes and low maintenance that doesnā€™t require him to manage or talk out feelings because thereā€™s none involved in the first place.
ā€” Once more, wife and family are important! He does long for his family, not only his wife but his daughters, and vice versa. This suggests not only that he wants good relationships with them but that he wants them to be with him, a family life. Far from the cut communication they all more of less have during canon, and perhaps far from their life pre-canon when he worked away from home a significant amount of time. Weā€™ve seen recreations of people by the winged lion before with doppelgangers and monsters (naga), and though he claims he can make satisfying imitations, what weā€™ve seen is that they base themselves on the best memories of that person, like with Marcilleā€™s dad, or twist behavior to be more pleasant, like Mithrunā€™s lover (and possibly twist appearances depending on the personā€™s view of them, but thatā€™s Mithrun analysis). The line does suggest Chilchuck would want his family members as they are in reality and not idealized versions, but the circumstances are chaotic and urgent enough in the scene (and again the lion isnā€™t fulfilling Chilchuckā€™s wish but trying to make him content for Laiosā€™) that it could just be the winged lion saying what he needs to to convince him the fastest possible, and like we see with Laios that can crumble to give way to deeper or more complex desires.
On top of that we just have general info on Chil. How does Chilchuck deal w his issues? What does he like to do? He likes alcohol and ignoring his problems. We have to remember there is a split between what someone would consciously wish for and what their soul uncontrollably irrationally craves. As always with Dunmeshi, thereā€™s a narrative of irrational deep-seated desires vs active wants, what you crave vs what you strive for, what you dream of vs whatā€™s actually good for you, the animal vs the human inside you, heart vs mind. Chilchuck craving a harem of hot babes in his fantasies but wanting his family life & wife back again is not mutually exclusive. You may crave becoming a monster and tasting what humans are like a little but still want to save the world & your friends more.
Btw can we adress the irony of him terrified of being the last one alive, of being left by his daughters and wife, of having left and coming back home one day to see everything gone or rampaged, yet not caring about dying of liver failure himself, knowing every time that he enters a dungeon thereā€™s a real risk he may not come out. Die somewhere I canā€™t see you. I prefer leaving you than being left behind. Heā€™s selfish and shortsighted like thatā€¦ Chilchuck is selfless in many ways of course, but perhaps also due to his own relationship with his parents, he often undermines the effects he has on others in his relationships, both the good and the bad (he talks himself down about being cowardly and greedy yes, but never hints at his bad health habits, alcoholism and starving himself, may have affected his loved ones, doesnā€™t question his wife falling into a bad mood the night before she left, and talks about the possibility of dying here and there very casually, though obviously he tries his best to stay alive when it doesnā€™t concern his health).
Chilchuck king of "Let me just avoid and ignore my problems surely theyā€™ll go away, things might work out and if they donā€™t well tough luck Iā€™ll survive and I probably deserve it anyways". If I donā€™t look at it it will dissapear <3 Why care when you can simply not think about it.
You might not understand Mister "my love will stay strong through months of work travel and also 4 years of separation" and Mister "well idk my siblings and me are kinda strangers and my dad is dead but thatā€™s kinda whatever", but typically relationships need some form of maintenance and emotional availabilityā€¦
The actual headcanons finally
I kinda have 2 routes in mind for dunlord Chil and both of them are centered on "I care too much, i wish things were easy", so first is a lot like his succubi, itā€™s full on indulging in his guilty pleasures like alcohol and bodies and itā€™s to keep him in a constant state of thrill and euphoria and distracted, unfeeling about stuff that really matters. "Nothing matters except that Iā€™m enjoying the moment!" vibe. He gets to live a life worthy of Dionysus, with alcohol and women and debauchery and likeā€” never having to think again, never having to feel anything but pleasure again, never have to feel guilty or shitty or angry or sad. He has a harem and gets everything on a silver platter.
Breaking news demon magic-induced rush of euphoria and power still not enough to cure this man of his self-hatred nor his capacity for thought!! But in his case a state of euphoria is what he seeks I think, to kinda mask or replace the Everything Else.
The other is what I think closer to what canon suggests, with what WL implied too with "Iā€™ll make you a new wife and kids like the originals!!Ā šŸ˜Š", itā€™s a (spoilers) Wandavision type thing where itā€™s a slice of life where heā€™s never at work and always at home and the family eats lunches at the dinner table together and everything and everyone at any moment is just. Happy. No issues. It was all a dream, this is real and everything is fine and your family is perfect and happy. I like to think the timeline would be wonky, his daughters would fluctuate in age, but heā€™d want to be there for what he missed, would want them to still rely on him and look up to him like when they were young, would like to forget that theyā€™re now independent adults and the distance that grew between Chilchuck and his siblings is happening between them as well. Chil would want doppelgangers of his family imo, at its core just a general wish for a peaceful happy family life with no drama, no need to compromise, a little paradise of unconditional love and no consequences. Itā€™s for sure straightforward, but Chilchuck is a man with straightforward desiresā€¦
But see Chilchuck is a greedy man, and he wants it both ways without having to sacrifice anything or expanding any efforts himself. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. I think playing with these two opposite directions and mixing and matching is most fun. Him leading a life where he indulges in all his worst habits while still having everything he wantsā€¦ Him getting to have BOTH his wife and any woman he can imagine up, his life like two sides of a coin he can flip at any moment where heā€™s partying then heā€™s at home enjoying the quiet and his toddler daughters playing with toys on the carpet. Christ when you remember itā€™s all an illusion thatā€™s terrifying, the doppelgangers and succubi from the winged lion playing chilchuck ping pong.
A safe little haven both security-stability wise and emotionally. Gets to have both the relaxing and the thrilling in any dose he wants, mixed or separatedly. What Iā€™d argue he had pre-canon too: Can live it up in taverns away from home, stays away from home for long periods of time, and can come back to home aka the symbol of relaxation and safety whenever he decides to. Something he can leave and come back to at will, an anchor he can trust in (until itā€™s taken from him and his wife leaves. Or in his worse nightmare people rush in and kill his daughters). The ideal of a house and family to a working man, perhapsā€¦
I think itā€™s fun to think on wether or not these desires would be interesting at all to the winged lionā€¦ In canon he seeks out "rare/complex desires", common simple things like I imagine riches, sex, substances and pleasure would be are boring to him, heā€™s eaten those so many times already. So perhaps he wouldnā€™t last long as a dunlord, the WL would want to eat him fully quick, canā€™t keep him interested or waiting long for a meager meal, too much effort raising the cattle and too low quality meat. By making it more twisted or layered Chilā€™s desire would become more desirable to the demon, itā€™s part of whatā€™s fun with the third option to me. But whatever. Has he ever eaten a guy with this much repression and self-sabotage... Like trying to get the meat out of a walnut, enrichmentā€¦
Other dunlord Chil takes Iā€™ve seen that are fun and good:
@feelo-fick and @pluvio-floret have a dunlord Chilchuck AU project dubbed "tragedy AU" where Chilchuck is said to be "on vacation", in a weird delirious state, only half-there half of the timeā€¦ From which he doesnā€™t want to wake up </3 Quoting Feelo, this is why the vacation thing is only a half-joke cause he is 1) letting all his responsibilities go 2) indulging in himself and 3) "spending time with his family" <- lie but you get what i mean. Additional comments that have me vigorously nodding: because changing is hard why cant things just be okay right now without the effort !!! Life is hard heā€™s so so tired he just wants to feel goodā€¦ he just wants life to feel nice and easy for a sec while he can learn to breathe again and lose the stress and trauma heā€™s accumulatedā€¦ā€¦.. spoiler alert yes !!! in fact a depressed person can suck themselves into their job and lock out the world who wouldve thought !!!
And then Cabinette I know posted about his dunlord take once but I donā€™t have the link, in which Chil has a lot of nosebleeds because of mana overload which is fun and interesting to think about imo~
In dunmeshi, where characters get underground pockets of the world as their playground disconnected from everything outside and the rest of the world, itā€™s important to remember to face reality even if it has conflict and people with different views and stances from you, itā€™s something Chilchuck and Marcille and everyone needed to learn, and the thing with a dungeon lord AU is that you imagine a timeline where he fails to <3
A timeline where his dungeon lord wish is to desire nothing bc hope and want has only ever hurt him would also go so hard. Very universal thing though I suppose.
ā€¦ And this is why a Chilchuck-centric Coraline AU is really really interesting and fitting and topicalā€” Ok thatā€™ll go in a separate reblog/post at @Fumiku I need to let this end
#Dungeon meshi#chilchuck tims#Analysis#dungeon lord chilchuck#Spoilers#dungeon meshi manga spoilers#Wish we could put just parts of a post under a ā€˜click to read moreā€™ box that scrolls open and closes neatly#Bc 3/4th of the post is just extra explanation for ppl who donā€™t See The Vision already but like thatā€™s not what i wanted most of the post#to be really gdbdg#Headcanons#You could say the family also represents something heā€™s built up with how own hands. If he has self-worth issues and thinks heā€™s a screw-up#in the virtue/honor and likability department especiallyā€” his family destroyed/killed also represents the one biggest good thing#heā€™s done/created crumbling also. Like his wife leaving without a word while he trusted their relationship this can hugely impact#oneā€™s sense of identity and self-worth and what youā€™re living life for. In his case itā€™s not too surprising he turned to simple#physical pleasures for comfort and enjoyment. Like with tasting good food having moments feeling good keeps you going#He always focuses on the bad relationships bring and never the good aghhhh#The reverse of Marcille who often idealizes. They both ignore problems in their relationships in opposite ways.#What do you mean why do i bring up marcille. Okay yes thisā€™ll get a marchil Fumiku short brainstorm reblog as well#Chilchuck is soā€¦ curse of having feelings and not realizing the extent of them. Underestimating how much you care#Itā€™s either ā€˜iā€™m fine who caresā€™ or falling into the pits of despair and blaming himself n spilling his whole bag no inbetween#Dunmeshi succubus#Fumi rambles#boy thatā€™s what this boils down to i suppose#Family angst ā€œHey I came back home from work and iā€™m tired so donā€™t talk to me about problems or anything k? Iā€™m here to relax smh damnā€#< unwilling to admit he has issues he should be working on or that some things are affecting others negatively#Chil you are so enneagram 6w7 <3

here are some preliminary sketches I had done in my sketchbook for the peepaw chilchuck comic.
I wanted to follow it up with some worldbuilding thoughts I had while working on it, if that sort of thing is interesting to anyone:
- itā€™d take place 5ish years post-canon
- I changed almost everyoneā€™s hair to show time had passed. Chilchuck and Kabru were the most drastic (I COULDNT STOP THINKING ABOUT THAT LONG HAIR KABRU THAT KUI DREW), Marcille grew out her bangs, Senshiā€™s beard is slightly shorter, and Izutsumiā€™s hair is mildly longer. Laios and Falin give me the impression that theyā€™re the brand of neurodivergent thatā€™d pick one haircut and stick to it for the rest of their lives. I almost gave Laios facial hair but idk heā€™s gotten over his daddy issue enough for that.
- Emertim Chils: I tried to follow both the half-foot and dwarven naming conventions for the baby, so Emer- comes from ā€œemeraldā€ (dwarven names are often gemstones or ore) and -tim because Chilchuckā€™s fatherā€™s first name was Tim :) Dwarves donā€™t have family names, so Emertim would take Chils, same as Flertom. Usually theyā€™re named after their father but I didnā€™t wanna name a random dwarf man. thank you Chel for helping name him šŸ«¶šŸ’•
- Initially the idea that Chilchuck would keep an entire grandchild a secret was just a joke, but it made sense when I thought about it. I wonder,, would dwarf/half-foot couples have trouble conceiving? Because if so, Iā€™d imagine Flertom may have lost a couple pregnancies. Chilchuck is already such a private person, and I donā€™t think heā€™d feel comfortable airing his daughterā€™s grief like that. They wouldnā€™t wanna tell anyone until they were sure this baby was gonna make it.
- For the above reason, Chilchuck would absolutely spoil this kid. Not that he wouldnā€™t have spoiled his grandkids anyway, but I think after all that stress, heā€™d be extra extra doting. Heā€™d be letting him do things heā€™d never DREAM of letting his own daughters do. Completely different parenting style.
- I think heā€™s still too prideful to take advantage of Laios being King (sidenote: is Laios even wealthy??? does a kingdom that sprung up from a previously-sunken continent even have money?? what the fuck is their economy), but like,,, if Laios offered any gifts he wouldnā€™t exactly say no.
- Izutsumi surprisingly really likes the baby :3 sheā€™d like to take naps with him and heā€™d like her purrs and sheā€™d have a lot of fun playing with him.
- SENSHI. meemaw mode. That kid would grow up not realizing Senshi isnā€™t technically one of his grandads. He is FEEEEEDING this kid.
- LAIOS DOES GET TO HOLD THE BABY!!!!!! just. eventually. They donā€™t actually expect a Tarrare situation LMAO they just wait until the kid is a little less fragile and a little more mobile. I think Laios would be really good with toddlers.
- Chilchuck is very thankful Emertimā€™s half-foot genes kick in sooner than later because he was getting too big for him to carry.
- Emertim would probably get the extended lifespan. He and Marcille would get to stay friends for a very very long time :ā€™)
- my personal headcanon is that Chilchuck and his wife decide to split. He still loves her and itā€™s probably still a bit mutual, but after four years of almost no-contact, they decide their communication issues arenā€™t working well for their relationship. Plus, the Adventurerā€™s Bible says Chilchuck is renting their old house out to family, and heā€™d feel bad kicking them out so he and wife could move back in. Theyā€™d still be on good terms, and would be good at coordinating when to babysit.

hiiii could you write some nsfw headcanons for chilchuck with a reader whoā€™s insecure about their body?
gn + implied human! reader + kinda dominant chilly chuckles
<3
oh my, that man is not good with emotions. one of his flaws is that heā€™s kind of bad at dealing with them since they leave him in a vulnerable state. it was no secret that heā€™s emotionally constipated, his past wife left him because of that.
but ever since you came along, chilchuck has been slowly improving, not wanting a repeat of what happened. heā€™s acknowledged that by loving someone, he needs to be able to be open with his feelings and become mindful of yours.
once you work up the courage to tell him, he visibly stiffens up. chilchuck is silent for a few seconds, he really wasnā€™t expecting this while he was kissing you up.
he spends a few moments awkwardly fiddling with the buttons of his half done shirt as he thinks of the right words to say.
ā€œā€¦. iā€¦ donā€™t really care about what you look like.ā€
okay. he couldā€™ve worded that better.
ā€œi-i mean! i enjoy being with youā€¦ for who you are.ā€
chilchuckā€™s biting his lip, looking at you hesitantly as he reaches a hand out to you. heā€™s looking anxious before you wrap your arms around his shoulders.
he yelps as heā€™s tucked into your chest, letting out a sigh of relief that you donā€™t seem upset. you pull away and look down at him with a smile.
ā€œyou suck at this.ā€
ā€œi know.ā€ he sends you a grin.
placing one hand around you, he pushes you gently to sit on the bed. he stands in front of you and holds your face, nuzzling into your nose which brings a laugh out of you.
ā€œi know iā€™m bad atā€¦ this kind of stuff but i meant what i said.ā€ he looks at you seriously, big ears twitching as hair strands falls to his face, rough and messy after your heated lip-lock earlier.
ā€œiā€™m nothing but an old, brooding man. i love the way you make me feel and i wantā€¦ you to l-love how i make you feelā€¦. regardless of what you look like.ā€
he can see how youā€™re biting back a snicker as he tries to get his act together. chilchuck can feel his face getting hotter as he hears your bubbling laughter. but heā€™s glad youā€™re less nervous as before.
ā€œy-you think this is real funny, do ya?ā€ he yells out.
heā€™s kinda grumpy after all that, feeling a bit embarrassed that you laughed at him. after a few kisses smothered on to his face, he slowly gets back into the mood, making sure to pay extra attention to your reactions.
if you ever cover yourself up, he will give you a peck while slowly taking your hands off and whispering reassuring phrases.
he will kiss down your body as he keeps his eyes on you, forcing you to watch him. when he finds out which part makes you insecure the most, chilchuck will leave open mouthed kisses and suck a hickey on it.
with his enhanced hearing and senses, your quiet whimpers and gasps gets him going as he touches and feels you thoroughly with his fingers.
since this is your first time being intimate together as a couple, he makes sure to treat you softly and gently. heā€™s attentive to the spots that make you moan out the most, notices how you grip the sheets harder when he licks and sucks on a certain area. all of them noted in his head so he can figure out what else youā€™ll like.
chilchuck groans breathily, heā€™s kind of ashamed to lose control of himself, thinking itā€™d only embarrass himself.
ā€œam i not making you feel good..?ā€
ā€œwhere did this come from?ā€
ā€œyou donā€™tā€¦ make as much noises as i do. iā€™m wondering if iā€™m not doing enough.ā€
once he hears your reason, he immediately rushes to assure you. though still a bit hesitant, heā€™ll try to let go more the next time youā€™ll get intimate.
can i just say heā€™s skilled at giving oral. his hands and fingers can take you to god and back once he finally finds out what specific things you like. he loves being all in there, loves your smell, your sounds, your fluids.
he doesnā€™t say it out loud though. which makes you wonder why he keeps asking if you could fuck his face whenever you two do it.
ā€œis this some sort of kink of yours?ā€
ā€œjust say yes or no!ā€
after one round, he can get pretty spent. but if youā€™re still needy, he can muster some energy to make love to you slowly.
oh, and he lives for lazy morning sex. sometimes youā€™ll wake up to him kissing down your shoulder and arm, whispering small ā€˜wake upā€™s to your buzzing ears.
aftercare with him isā€¦ well, lazy too. heā€™ll drop to your side, breathless as he stares up at the ceiling. after a few moments heā€™ll sit up and look down at you on the bed, whispering sweet praises as he holds your face.
heā€™ll smoke for a bit, facing away from you. he doesnā€™t want you to cough from the smoke after all.
drags you to the bathroom after a few moments. he hates being sweaty and youā€™ll have to kill him before you force him to snuggle right after sex.
chilchuck just doesnā€™t like feeling gross, heā€™d want to be clean as soon as possible. he will fuss over you during bathing. divorced father of three but with the way heā€™s acting makes him look like a mother.
he will scrub you down to the bone but will be less aggressive if you tell him it makes you uncomfortable.
ā€œput your clothes in the basket, dry your hair, make sure you brush your teeth properly.ā€
ā€œi always do! follow your own advice, you alcoholic.ā€
ā€œi will drown you in this tub.ā€
what a nice and loving man, am i right
after bath time, heā€™ll lay on his side with nothing on but some underwear. his arm is around your torso as you fall asleep while he watches you with a soft smile, fingers tracing soft shapes on to your skin.
8/10 for being emotionally constipated but an A+ for trying. (iā€™m kidding heā€™s great)

(this post features transmasc chilchuck! if that's not a headcanon you enjoy you may look the other way)
chilchuck returns to kahka brud after laios's coronation, but as he'd somewhat suspected, things with his wife don't work out. returning to merini, he reunites with laios, and without a party to compromise and no existing romantic relationships for either of them, they finally confront things they've both been feeling for a while.
chilchuck never did anything drastic to prevent himself from conceiving more kids after puckpatti was born, and as he and his wife's relationship grew distant, sex wasn't an active factor anyway. so he's maybe... not as careful as he should be, when he and laios fall into bed together.
winding up pregnant, chilchuck finds himself unwilling to get rid of it, and just as quickly finds that laios doesn't want him to either. scandalous though chilchuck is sure their relationship would be to the kingdom, laios seems unconcerned, and is far more invested in being with chilchuck.
fentripp is larger than any of chilchuck's girls were, but to laios, he seems so small. chilchuck frets about him being late to all of his developmental milestones, but to laios, he's meeting them all earlier than he thought kids did. he's small for a tall-man, but big for a half-foot; his senses are sharp, though, and his mana pool is reasonably deep, so he did get some benefits from both.
fentripp is two years old when laios proposes, taking chilchuck entirely off guard. having an illicit relationship (and half-breed child) is one thing, but officiating it...? making chilchuck his spouse and fentripp his successor? chilchuck is baffled by the choice, but to laios, it's the most natural decision to make in the world.
as he ages and discovers his aptitude for magic + grows ever closer to his doting aunt falin (whom he idolizes), fentripp decides he wants to be a mage. like falin, he uses the gnome magic system, going so far as to turn up his nose when aunt marcille tries to teach him anything from the elven side. spirits are his friends, not his tools; it's very important to him.
laios's curse isn't hereditary, and fentripp can freely interact with the kingdom's monsters. it may not be what laios had always dreamed of for himself, but seeing his son adopt his enthusiasm for monsters is deeply heartwarming, all the same. (chilchuck wishes fen would maybe be a little more careful, but at least if laios comes running, the monsters scatter.)
he's a beloved child, cared for deeply by all of laios and chilchuck's friends and family. he's also, frequently and with little remorse, a handful--but in a soft, friendly way that makes it hard to stay mad at him. (chilchuck tries. the kid needs some discipline. but he's got laios's eyes, and does a great impression of laios's kicked puppy face, and "a troll will get you" doesn't work so well when his half-sisters have been fondly referring to him as a troll since they met him.)

Tumblr media
Ok letā€™s get one thing straight.
(He isnā€™t.Ā  Haha.)
But!Ā  In all seriousness, Chilchuck has one thing he needs to do before considering a committed relationship.
Yep, even with all the longing glances, late night conversations, and helping each other learn and grow, he has to delay the fruition of your relationship until after everything after the dungeon dies down.
Wellā€¦ he just needs to talk to his past lover first.Ā  He needs to have a long, long conversation with her, and heā€™ll be sure to mention you too.
He relays this to you during the great feast privately.Ā  Despite his nervousness, the sigh of relief that escapes him is noticeable.Ā  His shoulders slack and he closes his eyes.Ā  Finally, itā€™s off his chest.
Before we talk about the actual relationship, though, letā€™s talk about stuff that happened during the pining phase!Ā  Yay!
Chilchuck only had one flame his entire life, and that was his childhood friend.Ā  He never really ā€˜datedā€™, never really had any sort of time to explore his feelings for anyone else.
To put it plainly, he had no idea he was into guys.
ā€œI dunno, Senshi was always kind of handsome,ā€ Chilchuck notes with Laios, and his doppelganger nods in agreement. You and Marcille pause for a second, processing the words the two men said.Ā  Like a house pet that has certain opinions regarding these sorts of people, you side-eye one another. ā€œHow would you know that?ā€Ā  You challenge. In response, one of the Chilchucks glances over at you ā€“ the more tired looking one ā€“ and he shrugs.Ā  ā€œNot anyone would have the kinda bold look in his eyes he has.Ā  The pinnacle of masculinity,ā€ he huffs with a small grin, as if daydreaming of the very such thing. You have no words.Ā  You quite simply donā€™t.
Itā€™d be a major ā€œoh FUCKā€ moment when he does realise.Ā  Honestly the entire realisation of feelings for Chilchuck is Good Medicine but times a billion.
Heā€™s pacing heā€™s pulling at his hair heā€™s questioning how the HELL did this happen.
If he has a pillow he is screaming into it more often than he normally does.
If youā€™re more on the masculine side, or are a dwarf, this man is a right mess around you.
Like heā€™s stammering constantly and hates himself for it.Ā  Constantly red in the face around you and has to excuse himself.
But like . Not in a gay way or anything.
(Seriously if you think how he avoids his friends is ridiculous, this is eleven times worse.)
It takes some time, but I can imagine thereā€™s a moment in the dungeon where you kissed at least once.
Chilchuck is the one to break away first, his eyes wide and face beet red.Ā  It doesnā€™t take long for him to take his hands away from where they were, interlaced with yours, to hold his face and drag his skin down in dread. ā€œ...Did you like it?ā€Ā  You nervously ask.Ā  Heā€™s the king of mixed signalsā€¦ The half-foot nods slowly, still looking like he experienced some form of unwanted enlightenment.Ā  ā€œYuhā€“huh,ā€ he squeaks. You smile.Ā  Thatā€™s good enough for you.
Marcille definitely picks up on SOME tension though.Ā  Sheā€™s oddly observant of that sort of thing.
Once you actually reveal to the party that youā€™re seeing each other post-canon, Marcille disrespectfully shouts ā€œI KNEW IT!ā€
As Chilchuck and her have an arguing match about that, youā€™ll look at Laios who looks shocked.Ā  He had no idea.Ā  Some things never change.
Senshi and Falin are normal and actually just congratulate you.Ā  Give them hugs for me.
BUT FINALLY ONTO ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP HEADCANONS!!!!!! (This is like 600 words so far.)
Heā€™s still uneasy about a lot of things.Ā  He has a deep-rooted fear of messing this up again.
When the relationship is established he might distance himself for a bit.Ā  Not on purpose, mind you, heā€™s justā€¦ not sure of what to do, and heā€™d rather not do anything at all than mess up.
Chilchuck no that in turn is messing up noo!!!!
Youā€™d have to tell him this and heā€™ll try and turn his behaviour around instantaneously.Ā  Heā€™ll be nervous and frustrated with himself, but take it slow and heā€™ll come around eventually.
His nicknames are ā€¦ unique.
Heā€™ll use stuff like ā€œidiotā€ with the greatest affection in his eyes and a soft grin, but heā€™ll say ā€œhey handsomeā€ with the most dripping sarcasm and sneer.Ā  Why is he like thisā€”
Play with his strands of grey hair and heā€™s so flustered, swatting your hand away.Ā  If heā€™s tired and cuddling into you, though, heā€¦ well, he wouldnā€™t mind it.
Speaking of cuddling!Ā  He didnā€™t really do much like cuddling in his previous relationship, to your surprise.Ā  He just shrugs and says he and his old flame werenā€™t that kind of people.
This is how you inadvertently find out Chilchuck is a wombo combo of touch starved and too embarrassed by it to do anything about it.Ā  How does he liveā€¦?
He knows himself if youā€™re not a half-foot that him being a big spoon is too ridiculous of a notion.Ā  Yeah, he immediately assumes he has to be the one spooning you.Ā  He realises with time though that heā€¦ drastically prefers being in your arms.Ā  Feeling secure, lovedā€¦Ā  He really really likes it.
Not like you can ever get him to admit it verbally.
(You can still see it from how he relaxes into you and smiles as he drifts off into dreamland.)
Itā€™s been a long day, and Chilchuck wants nothing more than to see you.Ā  You look up from where you were sitting when your boyfriend enters the house and smile.Ā  ā€œGood evening, love.ā€ God, your smile.Ā  If he didnā€™t know heā€™d be coming home to this, then the work day wouldnā€™t have been worth it.Ā  He sighs and smiles, walking to you and immediately falling onto your lap.Ā  His face tucks itself into your stomach and his arms wrap around your middle. ā€œHm, someoneā€™s tired,ā€ you remark with a grin.Ā  Chilchuck merely groans into your form. Sparing him from any teasing, you card your fingers through your hair.Ā  You can already feel how he melts into you as he loses consciousness. You lean down and kiss the shell of his ear.Ā  ā€œSweet dreams, Chil.ā€
For a long time, he struggles with actually calling you his boyfriend.Ā  Itā€™s not like heā€™s ashamed of you, itā€™s justā€¦Ā  Itā€™s always been ā€œmy wifeā€ for such a long time.Ā  He still canā€™t quite fathom this change in his life.Ā  That youā€™re his and heā€™s yours.
Eventually, heā€™ll be the one to proudly proclaim ā€œmy boyfriend!ā€ when he gets the chance to mention you.Ā  Heā€™s quite proud of the fact heā€™s got you, after all.
His kisses are usually quick and brief pecks on your temple or if heā€™s not in reach, your hand or shoulder.Ā Ā
Ugh can you imagine him taking your hand and giving a kiss to the back of it?Ā  And you can feel his thumb ghost over your knuckles reassuringly before wishing you farewell to work?Ā  Dying dead.
Kiss him and heā€™s always taken aback every time.Ā  He still wonā€™t be able to comprehend it no matter how many times youā€™ve done it.
(To be slightly on the more suggestive sideā€¦ really likes making out when in the mood.Ā  He can do that for hours with him on top of you.Ā  Though he wouldnā€™t mind being underneath if he considers itā€¦)
He daydreams more often than he likes, especially early in the relationship.Ā  Heā€™ll feel ridiculous for it, like some lovestruck schoolboy butā€¦ well, yeah, he IS utterly enamoured with you!Ā  Donā€™t be surprised if you catch him staring at you or checking you out in some way.Ā  Call him out, and heā€™ll flush with a furrowed brow and glance away.
His love language mostly comes in the form of acts of service.Ā  Although thereā€™s a slight bit of gift giving too.Ā  He likes giving you wordworks or embroidery he made if he knows you like it.Ā  Maybe heā€™ll make you a teddy or ragdoll if youā€™re into that!
You also get Chilchuck thinking about the impossible after a while.Ā  He doesnā€™t try to make a big deal out of it, but itā€™s kinda hard whenā€¦
ā€œI think I can give marriage a second chance,ā€ Chilchuck says out of the blue to you one relaxing night in bed.Ā  His hair is messed up by you burying your head into it, and your lover is tucked into your chest, holding onto your waist. His words certainly catch you off guard, and for once Chilchuck doesnā€™t make a thing out of being the one to fluster you for once.Ā  Instead, he tucks his nose into your neck and sighs.Ā  ā€œI justā€¦ā€ he pauses for a few seconds.Ā  ā€œI think I can do it right this time.Ā  If youā€™re here with me.Ā  I think I can do it.ā€ The silence is thick with a kind of tenderness youā€™d only associate with the colour pink.Ā  Itā€™s deep and you can feel your face glow in the heat. You pull Chilchuck closer and kiss his head. ā€œIā€™d really like that Chilchuck.Ā  I really would.ā€ He chuckles slightly at the soft sensation, closing his eyes again. ā€œThank you,ā€ he says, ā€œI mean it.Ā  I couldnā€™t have made it this far without you.ā€

I know its sweet to imagine chilchuck rekindling with his ex wife and fixing their relationship post canon, but personally my headcanon is that sheā€™s already remarried and mostly moved on, and he only finds this out because marcille tracks her down and sends her a flowery letter about wanting to get back together signed as chilchuck and he receives a cease and desist in the mail

i dont really ship anyone in dunmeshi (except maybe chilchuck/his attempts to get back together with his wife) but most importantly im REALLY into aro touden siblings headcanon. with laios it was a done deal for me the moment i realize marriage will make him unhappy and with falin it's the combination of the trivia in world guide about how she had a fiance before the village realized she had magic and how she reacted to shuro's proposal
Tumblr media
it feels like just like laios she thinks of marriage as an obligation, not necessarily something she wants to do, and also seeing how she eventually rejects shuro in this comic saying that she wants to learn what she likes on her own it makes me think it would be great if she realizes not only she doesn't have to get married, she also doesn't have to love others romantically
this is all a built up so i can say the actual headcanon i've been thinking of in which because dunmeshi universe probably lacks the term to explain aromanticism so i hope in the future one of the many legacy the touden siblings left behind are sayings like "im sorry i dont see you that way i long for monster's flesh" and "she wants to travel the world, you see, like the king's sister" to explain why people don't want to get in a relationship

i've been poking at this too long to care how visually appealing it is anymore. My headcanons for the main characters' sexualities, based on canon information! (has no bearing on ships.) Canon speculation below the cut.
marcille (bi): fascinated by romance and loves romance. we only see her show explicit interest in a male (fictional character (General Halleus from the book series she loves)), but i don't think she's fully straight.
falin (aro? ace? lesbian? genderqueer?): falin's only interest in relationships in canon is 'she considered accepting shuro's proposal because she was afraid nobody else would want her, but felt it'd be unfair to him because she had no feelings for him'. i consider whether she's aroace or a lesbian or maybe bi/pan, and she also seems like she might have some genderqueer feelings, based on some of her discomfort with her body and wearing certain types of femme clothing. (Also the fact that sheā€˜s part male dragon.) Since she ends the story going on a journey for herself, it feels like she'll finally get the chance to figure out what she wants.
laios (pan, demi): he hasn't shown explicit interest in men, but similar to marcille, i don't feel he's fully straight. Heā€™s aesthetically attracted to monsters, at the very least, so gender probably doesnā€™t factor in for him. romance/sex just donā€™t seem to be much of a high priority to him in general, but he did think his ex-fiance was cute and didn't seem uncomfortable with the idea of marriage (just seemed unhappy with being trapped in his hometown), so i feel like demisexuality fits him well.
About his succubus: He was very noticeably not stopped in his tracks by it like Chilchuck and Marcille, but that could possibly be because it justā€¦.looked exactly like Marcille, not an obvious fantasy. He started blushing and stammering heavily when it turned into a monster, which likeā€¦.this boy is definitely a furry/monsterfucker, if anything, but that doesnā€™t speak on his attraction to actual humans.
I think it speaks for something that the succubi are able to literally read minds and craft the perfect fantasy for their specific target. And for Laios, it wasnā€™t just ā€œhis friend Marcilleā€. It was a version of his friend Marcille that wasnā€™t grossed out by monsters, didnā€™t think he was weird for wanting to be one, and was able to turn Laios into one. It was a Marcille who understood him at his deepest level that made him become a blushing, stammering mess to rival Chilchuck. Which is why I think heā€™s Demi, and needs a strong emotional connection with someone before he finds them attractive.
kabru (pan): his special interest is people, and he's bold enough with his sexuality to kiss rin despite not being in a relationship with her. so being pan/bi feels appropriate.
chilchuck (bi): he has a wife, and they were childhood friends, so he's definitely allo. but his comments and behavior towards senshi makes me suspect he might be bi, and just never considered the possibility due to being in a committed relationship.
senshi (gay, ace): this is 90% off of vibes. he keeps to himself in the dungeon and doesn't seem to have any need for social company, he's a complete hermit. Being ace makes sense to me, but so would him just having a low social drive. His succubus was 'a woman he hadn't seen since he was a child', but his journal implies it wasn't a romantic/sexual attraction.
namari (bi/lesbian): she is at the very least attracted to women, given her behavior with kiki, but she does make a point to say that kaka is also attractive to her, and her friends at the bar tease her about Kaka being her ā€œnewā€ boyfriend (implying previous boyfriends).
shuro: the token straight (in love with falin, asked her to marry him). i love you shuro <3 (but i can also see him being into men. there's no evidence to the contrary)
izutsumi: aroace. literally no question. her succubus is her mother.

Chilchuckā€™s wife and family - Facts, theories and headcanons
I want to keep this as a sort of masterpost on Chilā€™s family situation if I can, but if we get a lot of information on it (in the additional content that Kui is gonna make) that renders this more or less useless I probably wonā€™t update this anymore. If you find other crumbs of information or I've said anything factually incorrect please do tell me! I'm planning to edit this as we go since I want to compile most if not all of the information and pages we get about this topic on here, and if I just wait to post it perfection paralysis will nip this in the bud. It focuses a lot on Chilchuck and Chilchuck's wife relationships, but the daughters and Chilchuck's own parents and siblings are talked about as well.
CW/disclaimer: This post talks about messy family dynamics and such, thereā€™s no outright abuse Iā€™m implying anywhere, but alcoholism and neglect are mentioned and discussed. Iā€™m not here to demonize anyone! I love every character involved and I just want to theorize about the topic as a layered issue that involves complex characters. Also, I try to use very transparent language as to when Iā€™m citing or analyzing canon information and when Iā€™m giving a personal interpretation or headcanoning.
Abbreviated table of content:
Timeline and circumstances
Possible strains on the marriage
The hair question. Confirmation on what his wife looks like?
Other family dynamic & post-canon theories & headcanons
Parenting style + misc in a reblog addition (new)
Letā€™s start with the facts, shall we?
Timeline and circumstances
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, we see that Chilchuck and his wife are childhood friends, and they married at 13 years old and had two children in that same year. Since half-foots reach the age of maturity at 14, they seem to be what we'd call teen parents. It's a bit debatable though, since Laios says the age of maturity for tallmen (humans) is 16 instead of 18 or even 21, so what's considered to be the age of maturity is a cultural thing and isn't fully reliable when we want to compare to our irl understanding and what developmental stage it perfectly aligns with. Also, during the succubus chapter Chichuck says that his daughters were all now of age to be independent, and Chilchuck's wife leaves to live with Flertom, which would mean that Puckpatti was independent at age 10 and lived away from home as well (since she's the third/last daughter). Ah yes another interesting thing to note is that we donā€™t know the pregnancy periods for the races, since Meijack and Flertom were born the same year. It could be tight timing or it could be something else, but I donā€™t think theyā€™re twins, they keep talking about them being the oldest and the middle child, them being twins is definitely the sort of thing that would get mentioned.
Him starting working on the island notably happens just one year before his wife leaves him. I don't remember the other instances of him mentioning it though I feel like it happened, but since he started working at the Island's dungeon, working as a dungeon diver and then forming the half-foot guild, that probably means he started being away for longer periods of time and having a less reliable schedule on when he'd be coming back home. It is said that he went back home somewhat regularly iirc, though he usually ends up sleeping at the half-foot guild quarters. I'm not sure if Kahka Brud is also where he lived with his family, or just since he rented someplace new after she left him. He and his timeline state that he was born in a small village "northeast of the island", which he left at 14 one year after being married, but it isnā€™t stated where they go after so itā€™s unsure how far his home was from the island if it wasnā€™t in Kahka Brud. We donā€™t know when his father died so if that factors in to him leaving his village we have no clue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chil also says that he hasnā€™t seen or spoken with his wife nor daughters since the incident, which would mean he's gone 4 years without contact with his family during the events of canon. I don't remember if Chilchuck is said to exchange letters with his daughters, beyond the initial one from Flertom saying her mother was with her, so I've been assuming he hasn't.
Tumblr media
He also says "For about ten years Iā€™ve been travelling to dungeons in various areas and doing work" which considering heā€™s turning 29 that year would mean he started around 19 years old? The panel also gives details what sort of work heā€™s been doing. Either way itā€™s confirmed that Chilchuck travels for his work a lot.
In addition, since Chilchuck has the seal of approval of the bicorn + says so himself, he has always stayed faithful to his wife. So that means that unless he's had previous adventures before he was 14 and got married, he's never dated anyone else in his life, nor had romantic or sexual encounters/experiences with others in his 16 years of marriage right up to canon (year 514). I feel itā€™s safe to say that itā€™s implied that during all these years starting from when they were married, Chilchuck's wife was a housewife whose main job was taking care of the kids and the house.
Marcille's take on what happened is unreliable, as Kui even takes the time to directly say so in the Adventurer's Bible, so I don't want to use it as a baseline even if it offers some insight on what could have happened (her feeling out of place, leaving to test his love, etc etc).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Chilchuck says seems to be accurate though since it pertains to his perspective of the events! Unlike how Marcille's theory flows, Chilchuck was aware that something was off before she left since she "suddenly fell into a bad mood".
Tumblr media
Piecing everything together, my theory: Chilchuck and his wife were childhood friends and have always always sort of danced around of each other, the classic movie love story with childhood sweethearts, until they ultimately confessed and got together. While dating, Chilchuck's wife becomes pregnant and they're both unequiped to deal with the situation but decide to marry, either a bit forced in order to cover it up or hopeful to make the best of it. They make it work as they can and Chilchuck works to provide for the family while she takes care of the home and the kids, which means that even though he's not a deadbeat father (he cares, he was at least a bit involved in their lives and raising them since for example he knows how to braid hair after all) he ends up being rather absent from home. It only gets worse over the years, especially when Chilchuck starts working further and further away from home and coming home less often, and since Puckpatti left home Chilchuck's wife is alone at home most of the time, never knowing when Chilchuck would be coming and if to prepare the table for two instead of one, or even if he'd be coming back at all since his work is dangerous. The humdrum and lifestyle would get to her, they've grown into different people in these 10 years of marriage and she doesn't feel the spark or feels valued & seen anymore, so she leaves. He feels confused and betrayed which turns into anger so he doesnā€™t try to reach out and mend things, and with the way he says theyā€™re estranged and he moves away I think heā€™s avoiding his family somewhat.
Possible strains on the marriage
Tfw all your daughters are independent and your husband is gone to work almost all the time and he barely even tells you that he loves you, is there even a reason to stay together anymore? Every day itā€™s just you and an empty house and chores to do, wondering if you have to cook for one or for two today.
Alright itā€™s analysis and theorizing time! Although there are more facts down in this post if you care about Chilchuck's wife's appearajce, Chilchuck's parents & siblings or the kids, the essential facts so to speak were all in the first part.
We don't see Chilchuck showing any discontent with his wife through the manga so I'm assuming that he was content in his marriage, happy with his wife, and with how he stayed faithful to her even in the 4 years after she left (and never stopped calling her his wife. Which also shows a weird stubborn attitude since he wasnā€™t planning on reaching out to her and mend things but Iā€™ll put aside the possible entitlement/coping mechanism for another time) I think he truly loved her and still does. Since she left him and not the reverse, I'm putting a lot of emphasis on his wife's side of things. Especially since we do see how Chilchuck is at work quite a bit but never see how he is at home. Iā€™ll be sounding harsh towards Chil on this but heā€™s pretty much the only party we can criticize since we donā€™t know her, I still side with Chil on the leaving issue though, heā€™s justifiably pissed if she left without a word what the hell even.
Alcoholism and health
Chilchuckā€™s favorite food as listed in the Adventurerā€™s Bible is beer, and itā€™s shown that heā€™s prone to drinking until drunk whenever he gets the opportunity to. A cheerful drunk is still a drunk. (Extra reading: if interested here's a oneshot FMA fanfic by a friend that goes in depth about this very topic that really illustrates what sort of family dynamic that can bring about. Itā€™s not dunmeshi but itā€™s a good read.) Chilchuck is also canonically underweight, starving himself for a strict weight management diet (Extra reading: you can look at a short compilation post about that here). Did you know under eating makes one irritable? And this is on top of Chilchuck sometimes/regularly coming back home with "horrible injuries", since Marcille guesses it and he acts like sheā€™s dead right on everything that far.
Itā€™s rough seeing someone you love mistreat themselves, not being able to shake them out of that and having to stay to see them wasting away. Itā€™s rough seeing them put their work above their own health. Putting their work even above their family. Putting alcohol over family time. It's not that simple, but there's always that element when asking someone you love to tone it down with things like alcohol or such, that if they refuse, then it feels like they value that thing more than they value your feelings or opinions. That they love alcohol more than they love you.
You know how thereā€™s often this thing of "Well Iā€™m providing everything for this family, so whatever else that I do you donā€™t get to complain." I do think that itā€™s something theyā€™d have argued over a little bit, not that heā€™d say it that way, but the essence of it. "Chilchuck, youā€™re drinking a lot of alcohol often, Iā€™m worried maybe you should ease up on it." "This is what I want to do in my free time, give me a break.", "Dear, your mood gets worse when youā€™re hungry, I really think you should stop dieting-" "Would you rather I die in a trap because I was too heavy?", "Honey I donā€™t like when you work so far away from home for so long" "Well what else can I do, do you have any better idea?". That sort of thing. Even if not being passive agressive or snappy, or even spoken upon, these situations can cause tension, or a feeling of powerlessness or imbalance in the relationship. Although I personally feel like they were both rather passive in their relationship (thus having little arguments), which itself can be a problem since yes they let each other live but they grew more distant and less communicative as a result, more on that later. Content and tolerating, rather than happy and fulfilled.
Workaholism and long distance
Spending a lot (or even a majority?) of time away from home for years and years obviously can strain relationships in many ways. Besides becoming more distant, both with his wife and his daughters, there's just that side that maybe you grow apart or you end up not knowing them all that well. Like the fictional dialogue excerpts I wrote just above, the way Chilchuck puts work above most things can by itself be the source of a lot of unhealthy habits and strains that could not only hurt himself but his relationships too. Devoted doesnā€™t mean attentive, even if Chilchuck 100% devotes himself to only her romantically and works in the goal to support her that doesnā€™t transfer into being there for her, even when he physically is.
An absent father isn't necessarily a deadbeat father, but an absent father is absent. And alright, we donā€™t know what his schedule was like exactly, but he was busy and traveled around, I think itā€™s fair to assume that if we were to make comparisons itā€™d be like parents irl who are often on work trips. We don't know what Chilchuck's wife's social circle is like, but regardless of how big or small or supportive it is it would be easy to get lonely I think. Besides raising the kids undoubtedly falling more onto her shoulders as well. Managing a household can be very hard and tiring even when not alone, I can imagine she felt like she missed the support of Chilchuck either as help or comfort oftentimes. We know very little about her, but I don't get the impression that she'd build up resentment over it except maybe her ā€˜falling into a bad moodā€™, but exhaustion? Absolutely.
Itā€™s also implied imo, even beyond Chil not often being at home, that they rarely go out together. And that could very well be part of why she was mad after the outing. In Marcilleā€™s theory she says that her wife felt out of place amongst all the cool adventurer coworkers, and if itā€™s a rare time that they go out together and it was supposed to be about her meeting his coworkersā€¦ I feel like what could have happened was that she felt out of place yes, and even moreso if she ended up not participating in conversations much because of it and no one really seemed to care, and the evening was all Chilchuck and his coworkers chatting it up as always and she was an outsider, if she sort of just faded into the background, if it felt like nothing would have changed wether she was there or not... If she felt like her presence didnā€™t matter on this special outing that rarely happened, it could have been the straw that broke the camelā€™s back for her to want to leave, definitely. He finally comes back after a long work travel and they finally go out and this is what their quality time is like? The outing that was supposed to be about her & them both ended up being all about him, and once more she was supposed to just orbit around him and his life without complaint or her own selfish wants like a devoted wife. With how Chil said that she got mad "all of a sudden" on the way home and he didnā€™t know why, plus that he was probably drunk (which may very well have made the whole thing worse), I feel like it supports that he didnā€™t pay her much attention during the evening, not that Iā€™m assigning him ill intent at all, Iā€™m sure that for him, it was a casual and fun night out and he didnā€™t think it'd been unpleasant or alienating for her.
That night
And all of this speculation in order to try and figureā€¦ What happened? Why did she leave? I've already gone into it a fair bit, but this is where I discuss it fully in depth.
We canā€™t rely on Marcilleā€™s theory. Neither in the why she felt so out of place enough to want to leave, nor if her intention when leaving was to "test" him. I definitely agree that the reason why she left is layered and that the night/outing was the straw that broke the camelā€™s back more than the cause perse, but besides that itā€™s hard to say how much of it was impulsive and how much was because nothing else had worked to fix their relationship, or how long she'd been thinking of maybe leaving him.
Personally my favorite interpretation isn't that she found herself to be boring surrounded with Chilchuck's adventurer coworkers, or her reason for leaving is super centered around insecurity and if Chilchuck even loves her anymore, but that she sees how rich and eventful Chilchuck's life is and at the same time realizes how stagnant her own life has been. Chilchuck has adventurers for coworkers and they go out to bars and spend evenings together chatting it up, while she always does the same house chores every day and waits, and wonders, uncertain about when her huband would come back, and waits some more. She has a sort of passive role in her own life that gets pulled in one way or another by the people around her at their whims and needs, which is also a recurring theme in the manga: having a passive role in your own life, or a role that's devoted to others. Like with Falin who's always following her parents' directives or following Laios around, being the party's healer and eventually sacrificing herself for Laios and Marcille (she also doesn't seem to think much of marriage, as seen with Shuro proposing to her and her not having answered yet, which fits with how she was supposed to have an arranged marriage in her hometown too; a loveless marriage isn't something alarming to her). Izutsumi too, whose whole arc is about her gaining freedom and figuring out how to use this empowerment for herself and what she wants.
So she'd sit there, not knowing anyone except Chilchuck and not being able to follow their conversations about dungeons, and think about how this is a world she's totally apart from. How she knows so little of the world compared to him. She'd realize that while she's always waiting for Chilchuck to come home, dedicated to him and their family, Chilchuck's world doesn't stop and end at where and when he sees her, that while she's waiting he's living and experiencing things and being self-fulfilled. She's so passive and devoted and her tasks seem almost senseless now that the house is empty except for her, and in that time he's formed half-foot unions and she understands so little of what his life has become outside of her sight. This isn't a diss on Chilchuck or his attitude, I just think that it'd make her ponder about happiness and lifestyles, what's worth it and if she's content with her life. I think she'd find that her and Chilchuck aren't on the same page anymore, and probably they don't communicate much or even that they don't know how to communicate with each other anymore.
Other factors
They really do seem to be on different pages and not know how to communicate with each other well, since for example Chilchuck thinks that on the way back home she "suddenly" fell into a bad mood and seemingly left it alone, or otherwise they didn't talk until he knew what was wrong. Or like how she left and Chilchuck never reached out to her to talk or mend things, just like she never reached out either. According to Marcille it could be that she wanted to "test his love" and see if he'd even care if she was gone, but Chilchuck just got angry that she left like that and never reached out to her, so if that's true they definitely have incompatible expectations or ways to deal with things like that. Maybe she thought of leaving as something he should react to by trying to win her back, but Chilchuck did nothing and let her do her thing, and tbh if that were me I'd also have waited on her to reach out because I figure out that if someone leaves me they want space from me idk. He seems to be rather passive when it comes to interpersonal relationships and how they can mess up, made an analysis post here that talks about it, so the way he reacted by not reacting doesn't feel surprising, maybe she didn't know/remember that part of him, or wanted to shake him out of that tendency. He has no clue why she left, and there are just so many misunderstandings here that it's impossible to know what happened and how she felt and what she wanted for the future.
Also, weā€™re shown that younger Chilchuck, when he started dungeon crawling, is much more "innocent" and optimistic, less closed off on himself and bitter, and maybe he hasn't even developed his famous "sarcastic retorts" and "abusive remarks" yet as is plastered on all his character introductions and stats. Chilchuck has definitely changed a lot over the years, and some would argue not for the better. Staying with someone for so long has implications that they'll change and be different of course, but signing up for marriage with someone can still leave you questioning that choice decades down the line when they're so different

The hair question
Edit 1/13/2024 leak!!!! Things arenā€™t officially confirmed but this is a safe bet. You can still read this section to see my reasoning to thinking she had black hair prior to this tho haha
Tumblr media
It's not all that important rationally, but the community's been split on the topic: is Chilchuck's wife blonde or not?
Kui highlights Chilchuck being attracted to blondes a grand total of three times, and many assume that his wife is blonde due to this. However, the only vision we see of Chilchuck's wife is Marcille imagining herself as a halfling, so it's up for debate! Flertom has black hair, and that's mostly been the key clue that has people arguing.
Tumblr media
I'm not an expert in genetics but black hair is a dominant gene, but it also doesn't mean a black haired parent can't have a brown haired kid, or that two brown haired parents can't have a kid with black hair. As long as one of the parents have it in their genetic code from somewhere in their family tree, it's possible, if not maybe unlikely.
People have been taking Flertom having black hair as evidence that Chilchuck's wife has black hair, but it could be Chilchuck that has the gene and could pass it on. Although...
Tumblr media
That seems unlikely. We don't know what Chilchuck's elder brother's hair color was, and his elder sister does have a darker brown hair color, but in the case their parents had black hair or the gene for it, it seems highly unlikely if not impossible for the dominant black hair gene to miss this many amount of time in the gene russian roulette game.
And so I shall now call a witness to the stand, and you reader shall be the judgeā€¦ Dandan.
Tumblr media
You know, this guy? He makes appearances throughout the whole manga, but only has one spoken line in an easy to brush over flashback iirc. He's most often seen hanging out around Chilchuck and other half-foots, but it's unsure how far back he and Chilchuck go.
Now. Remember how Chilchuck and his wife are childhood friends? What if, and hear me out, what if Dandan is related to her. A cousin, or a sibling. Or maybe he's Chilchuck's cousin, even, if we go the reverse route.
The chapter cover
Look at the chapter cover below! We see each member of the main party at a table that's meaningful to them and their history, mostly showing themes of family, community and routine. Laios and Falin sharing a meal by themselves, Marcille at a meal in the cafeteria at the magic academy, Senshi by himself cooking in the dungeon, Izutsumi with Inutade at the Nakamoto household, and... Chilchuck, surrounded by much more mysterious and unknown characters and surroundings.
The only face we see besides the infant is a young one on the left which strikes me as looking a ton like Chilchuck! I doubt it's Meijack or Puckpatti, or someone else, especially since Chilchuck left his hometown pretty early which must make family gatherings harder (and routine is implied with the othersā€™ panels). If it were Meijack I think Kui would have drawn it to more closely match her too, and have her usual freckles. I also don't think it's just Chilchuck and his own family, since if that's Chilchuck the only sibling with black hair he could have is his elder brother and the infant in the middle is clearly, well an infant.
My thoughts are that the table is shared with family friends, or at least members of the community. The elderly person implies that either there's extended family or itā€™s a gathering, especially if Chilchuck's grandparents don't live with them. Community is implied to be very important with half-foots imo, and if Chilchuck is from a small hometown like he says that would surprise me even less. Childhood friends are often brought together as friends because of circumstances, such as proximity or their families being friends! Doesn't that kid almost off-panel on the right, with a Flertom-like hairstyle and black hair, look to be the same age as the Chilchuck on the left? šŸ‘€

Passed down from mom to daughter? The "most likely belonged to his daughters" is interesting too
If he is related, Dandan could be the infant. I suppose he doesn't end up mattering all that much in the end if you theorize that the Flertom-like kid is his wife on its own though haha. But wether or not you think that this is convincing enough, it's all we have on the topic for now.
Ah yes! Lastly, I've seen the sentiment around that his wife should be blonde, that Chilchuck's taste for blondes, if not the thing that brought them together, should be an acquired taste from loving his wife. That if that's not the case, then Chilchuck's type being blondes is either out of place or insuting or unromantic, etc etc. I can't help but disagree! I think, especially with how Chilchuck and his wife are domestic and all about knowing each from a young age, familiarity etc etc, that it would be so sweet if she wasn't his type! Loving someone so deeply, even if they aren't an idealized type... Which is a common theme/story & character beat in Dungeon Meshi.
Family dynamic theories
Tumblr media
Meijack is the most capable, takes after her father the most, seems to have her own business as a locksmith but has a stable steady life. Flertom is the most social, she works at a tavern which seems stable and is ambitious with marriage plans, she has a caring side to her since she sent her dad a handmade gift. Puckpatti is the most upbeat, though she has the most unstable lifestyle, seemingly doing odd jobs.
His daughters do seem well adjusted, which encourages me in that their family seems amicable on the whole and (at the very least) decently functional. We donā€™t hear what they think of Chilchuck but presumably none of them are on bad terms with him or each other. Flertom does say that "half-foot men are stingy" which, gee, I wonder what half-foot man would have made taught her that- though it does also seem to be a racial stereotype in general, with how for example Namari also says to "steer clear from stores with half-foot clerks".
Flertom seems to be the only one who reached out after their mother left (the only one who's mentioned to have done so at least), and it's because she was the one who took in her mother. Itā€™s not implied that they exchange letters regularly too iirc, it possibly was the only letter they've exchanged since then. I wonder if the daughters even know the full story, if their mother told them all about it or very little. Maybe some are pretty out of the loop, or more distant.
It strikes me that they don't seem to be very close. We're not shown anything that leads us to believe they don't like their father, but I think they're so used to him being absent for work that such distance is normal for them and they don't really long for a deeper relationship or to see him often. They were already out of the house and it seems like they didn't see each other much at that time either so for them it would be just a bit less than the regular amount of Dad time. It's been 4 years Chilchuck what are you doing... But yeah! From what we see they seem mostly unaffected, almost indifferent, not that we can truly tell. I imagine Flertom is the one most attached to Chilchuck with how she sent him a handmade cowl, and I think he rubbed off the most on Meijack teachings wise (besides her attitude, sheā€™s also the one who still wears braids, and we see that Chilchuck braids hair). It makes sense, since they're oldest, and on the contrary I think Puckpatti is the one that knows her father the least. It'd fit the timeline with him working away more while she grew up imo.
Wouldn't it be interesting then that she's the one that Chilchuck says is carefree, in the official translation "doesn't treat life real seriously"? That she's the most optimistic, the most go-with-the-flow, out of the bunch? To me that sounds like a result from her being the youngest and Chil being the most often at work, thus her getting raised by her mother without as much involvement from Chil. Far be it from me to say Chilchuck would raise his daughters to be unhappy btw, not at all, we just all know what down-to-earth values he wants others to have so he doesn't have to worry about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Althoughā€¦ Puckpatti spotted?? Seems like he wants to stop her from buying something? His heart meter for her is full <3 (Note: Iā€™ve seen it be argued that this could be his wife. I disagree, since the "stop them" and way that the long haired one is off-center compared to everyone else gives the sense that itā€™s many of his daughters, and the fact that itā€™s styled after a dating sim doesnā€™t mean itā€™s romantic love as we see with the others. Otherwise imagine being her wife and he tells you not to buy stuff when you go shopping together rip)
Tumblr media
Headcanons time:
When naming the daughters, together they choose a pool of names theyā€™d like but only one has the final say, and they alternate between who that is. Chilchuck sticks around more near the end of her pregnancies, and he hasnā€™t missed any of their births. I donā€™t have any opinions on who named who right now, but there could be some interesting stuff to theorize with Puckpatti, like them taking extra care picking the name together because they settled on her being their last daughter for fluff, or it was supposed to be Chilchuck but he was so busy that he ended up not picking in time and she was the one to name her for angst.
Actually scratch that I have a new theory : What if itā€™s actually customary for each parent to pick one half of their half-foot kidā€™s name? So then each would have chosen half of each girlā€™s nameā€¦ And this could be why Chil calls Puckpatti Patti instead of Puck which is her first name, because heā€™s stubborn since Patti was his pick lmaoooo. Pattipuck doesnā€™t have the same ring to it alas, his wife was so right
Chilchuck liked to do activities with the girls when they were young. He's not opposed to relaxing at home with them perse, but he likes to do workshops with stuff like arts & crafts to develop their agility some. I don't think they'd do much outings to places like restaurants or theatres for money reason, and I don't think Chilchuck is much of an outdoors type, but he could accompany them to nice fields to play in, or in winter places to play in snow and sled, and organize some activities at home. He's not home very often so when he is he likes to take it easy as a break from work and values the time he gets with his family.
Chilchuck would sometimes work from home as a locksmith, say, unlocking a chest for a customer. In those times, Meijack would take interest and watch him work, even handing him the tools he needs as he goes. In this way, Chilchuck taught her a lot about the work of a locksmith over time. He's also the one that would oil door hinges or do renovation around the house- when he's available.
Like the plushies under his table in his home that we see in illustrations, Chilchuck has a lot of mementos from his daughter (and his wife) he keeps around. Sometimes they take a bothersome amount of place, but throwing anything out isn't something he's seriously willing to consider. Flertom's the most artistic and she used to help with sewing clothes back together, so he has a cheap ceramic mug painted by her when she was really young and small embroideries around.
Imo Meijack would be the most distant in the present. Flertom makes efforts for her parents and is pretty involved, and Puckpatti's distance is more out of being a bit airheaded and being busy + not having a great grasp on time or what's a normal amount of family contact, but Meijack's the one who knowingly and intentionally keeps some distance. I think sheā€™d be the least optimistic about their family situation, and although sheā€™d be hopeful when Chilchuck reached out to them again sheā€™d be a but hesitant. I think Meijack would hold some grudges, being the one most critical of their parenting, both grateful to her dad for working so hard for them and saddened that he wasn't in their life more. Since Flertom was born in the same year I think itā€™s possible that Meijack was pushed aside a bit to take care of the younger baby more, out of necessity rather than lack of love. Her mom probably needed a lot of help around the house too. Flertom wasnā€™t blind either, and she cared about & noticed her momā€™s emotional states, but sheā€™s on the whole more hopeful and forgiving.
This is my most far fetched one but it is a hc after all, but I think it'd be interesting if one of them had food hoarding tendencies/stress. I like to think it's Flertom, because she's the middle child and would get told that her older sister and younger sister are "growing and need the food" so she wouldn't be allowed to take as much refill or such, add that to them not having much money to frivolously spend on food and that makes a kid who's worried about not eating to her hunger and tends to be possessive over food (I'm projecting). Differential treatment is inevitable in families with many siblings, and it can manifest in small or big ways, maybe they realize it maybe they don't. Working in a tavern has helped eased that tendency of her though, and while she does diet a bit she always leaves a meal feeling satisfied.
When they were younger, Flertom was a real firecracker, loud and spirited with some troublemaking tendencies! She was the daughter that got in trouble & got scolded the most. You can still see slivers of it now that sheā€™s an adult, but sheā€™s much more poised and diligent. She has much more acquaintances than friends, but she has a couple of best friends and usually gets along well with most people. Puckpatti was always a bit head in the cloud, very kind if not gullible, and tended to make friends somewhat easily but didnā€™t keep them for long, preferring to keep meeting new people and not keeping in touch well. She isnā€™t super talkative but tends to ramble when she does. Meijack is very introverted, she has more trouble making friends, she has a good handful though they donā€™t meet up often, her friendships tend to last and sheā€™s close to them. Sheā€™s grown more confident over the years, less repressed and more quiet. Meijack as the big sister tended to be the listener for her younger sisters who had more social mishaps. Flertom has dated once before and it only cemented to her that she was going to have very high standards from then on.
Meijack wears thigh-high boots because she hates when sand, dirt or snow gets in her shoes. She wears practical clothing but avoids anything frilly or flashy. Puckpatti also dresses practically, but she does enjoy pretty clothes, itā€™s more out of necessity and due to not having enough money to indulge. Flertom has a social stable job and she loves prettying herself up (especially as sheā€™s in search of a husband) so sheā€™s the one who gets the most and nicest fashionable clothes and accessories.
Chilchuck is hinted to have had a rather dysfunctional family himself (alcoholic father, distant siblings, etc). So he doesnā€™t really have the best model on how to raise someone and such. I imagine it was a sort of neglectful home situation, where the kids are encouraged to be independent. If they didnā€™t have to work or help around much, then free range parenting sort of thing. We do see how the family has full and warm feasts, where someone cleans his mouth with a rag, so itā€™s not like he didnā€™t have a caring circle or a tragic childhood though! I donā€™t remember if itā€™s explicitely stated, but heā€™s heavily implied to having grown up poor, as most half-foots, and I just think it's the hardened hardworking family type of childhood where just like he does with others they instill somewhat harsh life lessons in him, which in turn encourages him to indulge in the simple pleasures of life like alcohol and sex, or at least womenā€™s beauty and crass jokes. We do see he seems more optimistic when he's younger in flashbacks, so a bunch of his harsh view on the world is still likely learned and earned rather than taught. I still think he inherited many flawed views from how his father acted, like his attitude about excessive drinking not being a big deal and worth it. That work hard play hard, enjoy life die young mentality he has, shown mostly in the "alcohol" section of his Adventurer's Bible profile, could very well be partly a result of the general poverty half-foot communities are that he grew in as well, like how he doesn't hope for things to be as best as they could be and contends with good enough. As far as I remember, his mother is never mentioned, but I doubt it implies she was out of the picture. She was probably a regular sort of mother that took care of the home as well and was still around when his father died. It looks like thereā€™s a good age gap between one sibling to the next, that could be interesting to dig into too.
Tumblr media
A part of Chilchuckā€™s character is that he takes responsibility for safety and actions of people around him and is very often looking out for them to not do faux-pas wether socially or literally with stepping onto traps. The way he says "Iā€™ve got three people to think of here" makes me think thatā€™s also how heā€™d think about having to provide for his family, and that could be a source of stress and insecurity for him. Caring for others is a pretty integral part of his character and we see time and time again that his family is very important to him, in any case.

This pic has so much to say!! Itā€™s the ā€˜thank you for readingā€™ double page spread where theyā€™re going to a big dining table at the castle with Laios and the main gang. First family gathering in 4 years perhaps?! Iā€™ll say, not feeling very hopeful that his wife isnā€™t in this, not even implied to be just off-panel with a hand or anythingā€¦ I imagine before this he still talked to them at least a bit and figured their family situation out, but I think this is still in the early stages of reconnecting. Haha imagine being one of them and receiving a letter saying "Hi itā€™s been a whileā€¦ I want to introduce you to my ex-coworker the king and his friends, you up for that?" I donā€™t want to reconsider all my hcs for this yet, but this pic does seemingly show an eagerness from all the daughters to reunite and reconnect! Meijackā€™s could be seen as more hesitant, but I think itā€™s just awkwardness from meeting so many new people, of high status no less. Chilchuck does seem awkward and somewhat self-conscious though, and while that could be just from say Marcille and the others meeting his daughters and him not knowing how to act, I think that also shows that Chilchuck is unsure how to act around his daughters too. Canā€™t blame him, Iā€™d be stressed too. Anyways, the daughters are all dressed up! Puckpatti even brought flowers! And I doubt itā€™s just for Senshi, or just to be in with the king. Oh also also, Puckpatti chides Meijack here, seemingly on manners?, so that implies new/different family dynamics there~
We know with the succubus chapter that he does plan on reaching out to his wife again and shooting his shot, and when Marcille was dungeon lord he told her she could help think of a plan to make up with her together at which point Marcille showered him in gifts and flowers intended for her and his daughters. So we do know that whatever happens and however it happens, Chilchuck definitely will at least reach out to her to win her back or worse case scenario get closure on the situation.

These are his plans before itā€™s revealed that the Island isā€¦ Well, not an island but the golden kingdom, so the news that Laios is king and that might have changed them a bit, but I think heā€™s still gonna stick around to help with the half-foot guild for a while.
My personal ideal post-canon Chilchuck life is that after around a year or two of helping around in the golden kingdom, especially regarding half-foot working rights, he gets his shop and finally settles down. He prioritized the whole half-foot guild because there are changes to attend to and people to help, but also used that to procrastinate a bit on getting in touch with his wife again. He does send a letter though, and when she replies they then meet face to face. They explain how it was like on their end, their grievances and their feelings, and they do reconcile. Butā€¦ Itā€™s been 4 years and his wife has frankly moved on. Sheā€™d rather they stay as friends, and Chilchuck has mixed feelings on it but is ultimately fine with it. He was halfway resigned to not reconciling with his wife in canon after all. But no longer do they have cut contact! They get together with the girls for the holidays and the ambiance is nice! He starts exchanging letters more regularly. He also gets a second family of clingy asses with Izutsumi and the main gang and so though he lives alone in his shop heā€™s well surrounded and well loved, and his daughters visit to check up on him every so often.
I really like theā€¦ Maturity of Chilchuckā€™s plotline, if that makes sense? To me the ending that fits the most is him and his wife reconciling, but not getting back together. I like that they could still be adults about it and at least amicable even after divorce, and that that wouldnā€™t be treated as a tragic ending. In the end, they were childhood friends and teenage parents, they rushed things a bit and I genuinely think theyā€™re just not that compatible. If not then, at least having it be a gradual process, getting back together and making it work until theyā€™re truly comforatble with each other. Destroy the relationship to better build it again stronger!
Although, his arc in the manga is to allow himself to form connections and be optimistic, which would fit well with him and his wife getting back together. I def think Chil would get healthier post-canon which could fix the issues they had in their relationship though. Like for one he starts eating more, which improves mood & irritability & health, and also after the whole half-foot guild he plans to settle down with a shop so it wouldnā€™t be long distance or unstable anymore which would definitely give his wife some peace of mind. If they still do some long distance at first while he gets the half-foot guild stable, itā€™d be really cute if he sent pressed flowers with his letters to herā€¦ That could make a nice fic concept, like over time all the pressed flowers and exchanged letters hehe (oh shit thatā€™s a nice title)
My post-canon timeline is Chilchuck lives a nice life living alone in his house except his friends all visit him and care and even tho he likes living alone itā€™s also bittersweet and every corner of his life is haunted by mementos of the ones he loves and the moments he had with them. But then itā€™s also like the shared duty of everyone to pass by his shop when they can and keep the old man company and sometimes that means many people come at the same time like if both Meijack and Marcille came the same day~ Cozy life, no regrets except a lil regrets still. Thatā€™s it thatā€™s all I want.
Misc
I didnā€™t know where to put this, so new category time! Family truly is a central theme of Chilchuckā€™s character. His reaction to learning more about how life gets made is so awed by the wonder of the world. Life indeedā€¦
Tumblr media
The implication of this page is that Chil didnā€™t know about the science side of how procreation works, though of course he did know about the practical side of it. This is speculation, and we have no clue how widespread the information of how reproduction scientifically works lol, but I think itā€™s fair to think that half-footsā€™ education especially in smaller communities is handled by the parent, school of life style, or if there are schools then the education is very general and it probably ends early. I think this is supported by how for example half-footsā€™ jobs weā€™ve seen are based on experience rather than knowledge, like being a locksmith. Of course any job has its fair share of specialized knowledge to learn, but jobs you learn on the fly pretty well. This sort of dynamic contrasts a lot against elves many tallmen communities, like with the magic academy, where education and knowledge are valued almost above experience, this is what the mandrake chapter was all about after all. Poorer communities tend to have poorer education systems as well irl, itā€™s a whole issue.
So I already said my piece about his wife not being blonde and it being nice and romantic because literally you donā€™t need someone to be a beauty ideal to love them and thatā€™s fine and normal and even more romantic imo. But!! I do have an headcanon, now that his wifeā€™s appearance is all but explicitly confirmed. While their hair is blonde, yes their hair is wavy and the ā€˜mainā€™ one has deep-set eyes, not unlike his wife! Now this is a ā€˜which came first the egg or the chickenā€™ question, but while most people seem to be assuming that he got with his wife because she was his type, since theyā€™re childhood friends I feel like itā€™s his love for his wife that shaped his preferences in that deparment. Like ok he loves golden hair and hers is black, but isnā€™t it so much more romantic that he has so much love and devotion for his wife and has stared lovingly at it so much over the years, that itā€™d become his ideal? He loves her eyes <3

Conclusion
Reminder that Iā€™ve got more observations and tidbits compiled in a reblog addition now.
More stuff I should workshop for the masterpost:
Compile more info on Chilchuck's father and his other family. Edit: I compiled all I had pretty neatly here in a speculation post, but thereā€™s no other concrete piece of info other than what Iā€™ve covered here sadly. Same with stuff like Chilchuckā€™s past work schedule and exchanged letters, there seems to be no other bits of evidence, exceptā€¦
On the chapter cover and extra where heā€™s in his basement room we can see one letter and a few papers across his desk. Maybe family letters? Wether his daughters or relatives. Seems too few to me, could just as well be job descriptions, but truly who knows, itā€™s hopeful.
Excellent analysis on half-foot culture here by a friend that I should read and incorporate the good info into my own meta~
And thus I leave you with a lil web weaving I made about Chil & his wifeā€™s relationship~ And this is where Iā€™d put panels of Chilchuckā€™s wifeā€¦ IF THERE WERE ANY
Should we even call Chilchuck's wife Mrs. Tims... We don't know dunmeshi marrital traditions though, and half-foot already have somewhat complex naming conventions... I hate that we don't really know if the daughters' last names are Chils or Chilz. Although that seems to be a japanese to english translation issue, since japanese used the suffix zu and not su, likely to imitate the english S sound at the end of a word. Oh yeah the last names change each generation, thatā€™s odd right? But in english it sounds like saying Chilā€™s, like, [father]ā€™s, so I think this also supports how half-foots communities tend to be tightly knit and live in the present, for them to be like "Ooh so youā€™re [father]ā€™s little one eh? I know who that is and this is insightful as to who your family is to me!". Icelandā€™s a place where last names are like this, though I donā€™t know about pros and cons of it in that context. Itā€™s called a patronymic.
Ah and I have a bittersweet spotify playlist about her and Chil too, here if ya want. Thatā€™s it the post is over

I don't see this take much, but don't you think Senshi is in the aro/ace spectrum? From his diary entry, his succubus tried to get him closer by projecting probably a motherly figure from his childhood, just like with Izutsumi (who clearly stated she doesn't have a type she's attracted to). He also left the orc village after realizing he would have to take a wife to truly be accepted as part of the tribe. He does lecture Chilchuck about sex, but I don't think he has any first hand experience in it, most likely he was just mimicking what was once taught to him (probably by Gillin). Do you also see this?
Definitely! I think he's the one you have the best arguments to say he's in the aro/ace spectrum, I personally like to think of him as Demi but a Aro Ace Senshi would be very nice <3
I was gonna list what possible arguments there's against that headcanon but there's honestly not much. Like he said he didn't want to take a wife cause he didn't want to lead attacks onto other adventures not necessarily because he didn't want to marry. And that maybe he just hasn't met many women/men from his own race and he sees the current party all as children so there wasn't an opportunity to fall in love. But that's all a lot of assumptions, he's middle aged in dwarf years and doesn't seem interested in seeking a relationship at all and I think that's great!

Headcanon: Chilchuck and his Bad Takes on Literature
i think chilchuck would be like my mom in the sense that he wouldnt like sad stories. dont get me wrong, cautionary tales? absolutely fine. they serve a purpose to him which is to tell people "dont be an idiot and do this or else something bad will happen"
generally sad or angsty stories though? no point to him, and in his perspective its really confusing how people just read things that make them sad. like whats the use of reading something if its just gonna make you sad. whats the lesson? its not even real so it doesnt help anyone.
whats the point in making yourself cry when you could just avoid that entirely by not reading it at all?
but the one of the biggest reasons why sad stories exist is to let you release all the built up grief in you. to send you something to let out all your emotions in a healthy way. catharsis. empathy.
even when i dont relate to the tragic experiences in some stories, several ones ive read have lead me to realize that im in a bad situation or that im following in the footsteps of the character suffering. its like a wake up call.
and making yourself cry isnt inherently a bad thing. if crying allows you to let go of building pressure and tension in you then thats good!
but chil wouldnt see that. of course he wouldnt, hes avoidant of most situations that would allow him to release emotion, and fearful of letting his mature (read: repressed) persona slip.
hes someone that runs away to quick comforts and distractions at the earliest sign of issue. hes already been in too many horrifying situations, dealing with another is a pain. and he knows denying everything and refusing to look at the situation doesnt help, but it definitely provides a quick and easy happiness in the comfort of ignorance.
because of this, reading something made to make one empathize with and confront these bad emotions is defeating the point of his cowering. if he faces his issues, even if only through the perspective of a story, he'd have to deal with acknowledging that things are bad and need fixing, and he'd feel terrible and guilty in the moment - which of course is the worst thing that could happen to a person (his thought, not mine).
which is why i find the concept of him being/becoming a tragedy himself at the same time as this headcanon soooo interesting. imagine the irony of him bashing on the protagonists of tragic stories for acting on emotion and impulse rather than logic, when he himself has fallen victim to irrational thinking while in grief.
cause... thats what people do when they grieve. they lash out, make bad decisions, ruin themselves, ruin others.
for a tragedy to be prevented, the protagonists would have to change fundamental parts of themselves, and act perfectly rational when under extreme stress. and chilchuck holds himself to these kinds of unrealistic standards because he unwittingly believes he can handle it all.
he cant, obviously. we see it for ourselves in his relationship with his wife. they were doomed from the beginning by chils already-established avoidance and lack of emotional vulnerabiltiy (and whatever else his wife had going on).
this is all just to say that if you told him about orpheus and eurydice, he'd probably be one of those idiots trying to point out the "plot hole" that he couldve "just not looked back" and "just trusted her"
Tumblr media
i dont understand. whats the point in reading tragedies? the protagonist is stupid, anyways. why would you take bitter medicine? why subject yourself to that?
i think its just a bad story.

there is always going to be something a little off-putting to me about claiming a definitive canon sexuality for a character that doesn't actually have one.
like, we all have our headcanons, of course. and that's fine. but there's a world of difference between "i headcanon this character as gay" and "this character is gay in canon", and so frequently the latter isn't even true. if it's not stated in the source material nor by the creator, then it isn't canon. and that's okay!!
like, okay, it doesn't affect me anyway because no listed sexuality could ever stop me from shipping what i want to, but also... this is so often just an excuse to be mad at people for shipping "the wrong thing". it also tends to dip really uncomfortably into biphobic/panphobic territory.
to use a relevant example, unless ryoko kui has officially stated marcille and/or falin are lesbians (i don't think she has?), you cannot act like they are canonically. not only do they have no in-canon definitive romance (because dunmeshi is not a romance story), but even if you interpret their bond as queer (and like, most of us do, i certainly do), that doesn't for sure mean they only like women. you can headcanon that they do, but you can't harass other fans for not treating them that way. you have to accept that they will both be shipped with men, and it's not homophobia unless the shipper in question is actually, you know, being homophobic about it.
nothing another fan does will ever change what happened in canon, nor alter your own fanwork. you can do whatever you want forever. if someone making your fave blorbo a sexuality you don't agree with pisses you off, block them. if they ship things you hate so much that it makes you mad, block them. you're allowed to. this is your space to curate as you please.
people on the other side do it, too. "ummm chilchuck has a wife" is something i've seen slung at m/m ships for him. not only does his canon wife (who, you know, left his ass, stop acting like shipping him with anyone else is unreasonable on that alone) not preclude headcanoning him as gay if you want to, but it ABSOLUTELY doesn't preclude him being bisexual. for fuck's sake. gay and straight are not the only sexualities. i'm going to drop the contents of a dirty litterbox on your head.
like... genuinely, headcanon whatever you want. you could make everyone in the cast the same exact sexuality if you wanted to. what you shouldn't be doing is acting like anyone else is beholden to your ideas. or, hell, even canon's ideas. fandom is about the freedom to do what you want with your blorbos. have fun with it and stop blaming other fans for not making the content YOU want.

šŸŽ²~ Vox machina ā€”
Almost all Flips, Pike is a Caregiver/Babysitter and Grog is a Regressor, rarely taking a caregiver role and if he does is a big sibling/uncle like relationship
Vex has a caregiver lean, while Vax has more of a regressor lean (thatā€™s why I put them in each category)
Gilmore is Vaxā€™s papa <33 he adores Vax so much, always giving him little gifts and treats!
Percy has moments with a bigger regressor or cg lean, itā€™s really depending on the day
Keyleth is the clingiest girl ever, shy little bunny!
Scanlan is also a pet regressor but more infrequent, regressing to a doggy or tiger cub
šŸ„˜~ Dungeon Meshi ā€”
Again, almost all flips lol Chilchuck is a caregiver/babysitter and Izutsumi is a age and pet regressor
Laios is a big brother cg and regresses to a puppy, dragon or any monsters he feels connected to at the moment
Falin is Marcilleā€™s caregiver and vice-versa! (Flip4Flip)
Senshi has a caregiver lean but Chilchuck can always coax him into regressing, the whole party knows how much he needs someway to cope with his past, they are all glad to help Senshi take a break from his guardian role
šŸ¦‹~ Arcane ā€”
I havenā€™t watched all of Arcane, but I got hcs!!!!
Give Jinx a break!!!! Let my girl regress!!!
Vi would be the most caring caregiver to Jinx, she really wants to make up for the time she lost away from her and all the pain Jinx had to go through
Vi also regresses but is really ashamed about it, Caitlyn always needs to reassure her and tell her how much she loves taking care of her
Viktor is also a regressor (another one that needs a break)
āš™ļø~ Guilty Gear
Im gonna be honest, I donā€™t know much about the whole game lore, but I know bits of lore
Elphelt is an age (1-5 yro) and pet regressor (Bush Dog), Nagoriyuki is her caregiver <3
Nagoriyuki at first didnā€™t understand anything about agere but he decided to learn more about it for Elpheltā€™s sake, he thinks is rather cute
Slayer is soooo cg, he definitely takes care of any little one he sees, maybe even Sharon (his wife) is a regressor!

Chilchuck's family
Entire timeline headcanons:
This uses what little canon information we do know about his past. And me trying my best to fill in the gabs with other information from my person physical copy of the manga and Adventurers Bible.
His wife will be referred to as Bellana Sams.
Quick background:
Chilchuck's family was quite big. He had 4 siblings, 2 older siblings, a brother and sister whom he didn't see much because they were on their own by the time he was born. He would occasionally see his mother receive letters from them and would see them at holidays but that was about it. Chilchuck's mother was a nice woman, but often too busy working to give him much attention. He was mostly fine with that as a child since he preferred to be alone anyways. His father on the other hand was a drunk, and he rarely saw him smile. Chilchuck often thought he most likely got his sharp tongue from him. Chilchuck has practically no memories of his father being sober. And although he never hit him or his mother or siblings. He was very mean with his words, never missing an opportunity to insult anyone of them. But Chilchuck still found it in his heart to care for his father, mostly due to the stories his mother would tell him when he was young and sober. Chilchuck's two younger brothers came shortly after him. Although they were never close or had much of a relationship. Due to all three of them having to work as soon as physically able to support their family and themselves. They practically worked for what they ate. Since their father "retired". His family often struggled because of this and he remembers being hungry a lot. Which is probably why not eating for 3 days in the dungeons didn't bother him so much when he was an adult. When they did talk however, it was mostly to make fun of each other. His youngest brother often made fun of him and Bellana as kids. Referring to her as "his girl." Which angered Chilchuck and his brother found it hilarious. Overall, Chilchuck's family life was very distant. Everyone just simply existing in the same space. And once Chilchuck's father drank himself to death when he was seven years old, the family seemed to somehow grow more distant. This is most likely the reason Chilchuck struggles with vulnerability and his emotional wellbeing even far into his adulthood.
Bellana's family on the other hand was the exact opposite. They were simple farmers who lived down the street from the Tims family. She had a younger brother whom she loved very much, was very close to, and protective of. And was always secretly touched with how good Chilchuck was with him, and how much her brother seemed to always love him. Her mother was a loving woman, her father a hard worker but good family man. Who was always unnecessarily tough on Chilchuck for no apparent reason. Her brother was always up to mischief. But they were relatively close as siblings. Both her parents were pretty old fashioned, and took their traditions seriously. Their family followed "the old ways", no magic, hard work is good work, etc. Altogether the family had a warm atmosphere to them.
Childhood friends
āƒ Chilchuck Tims and Bellana Sams met when they were little kids. Went to school together and were neighbors.
- They met under an apple tree where Bellana made fun of Chilchuck reading, who was studying different languages. Bellana had been climbing the tree, trying to get the better apples at the top when Chilchuck sat down at the foot of it. Not realizing she was there, he started to study. Bellana watched him for a few minutes. Before taking an apple and tossed it at his head. "Ow! What the- who are you?!" "What are you doing?" "I'm teaching myself another language, duh!" "... what a loser."
- They didn't get along at first, they found each other annoying. Bellana constantly teasing him and annoying him. While Chilchuck would scoff and say she's just a dramatic girl. But the more time they would spent together in school and just in close proximity, and the older they got they got along better. Bellana got bored of teasing him. While Chilchuck started to feel more empathy for Bellana instead of finding her annoying. So they became friends. Getting closer and closer the older they got. Until they were practically spending every day together.
āƒ Chilchuck was always well mannered and mature. But had a sharp tongue and quick temper. While Bellana was passionate and easily moved, with a heavy attitude and a quick fuse. But upheld her and her families reputation and traditions. Always finding her image always important.
āƒ as kids, Chilchuck would tell Bellana his dream of exploring dungeons. He'd fantasize about being an adventurer. Making more money than most halfings and living a life most people only dreamed of. She'd say that he's being silly and no way a half-foot could do that. He'd get frustrated with her, and she'd tease him. Eventually he stopped talking about it and she assumed he grew out of it. "One day.. I'm gonna be an adventurer. And lead people through dungeons..!"
āƒ Chilchuck thinks he first unconsciously started to fall in love with her around age seven, when his father had passed away. And although he wasn't close with him, and he was no model father, he was still his father. With the way his family dynamic was, no comfort or solidarity was provided to anyone. During the funeral, as he was being buried, Chilchuck stood and watched. Everything seemed blurry to him, his mother's sobs in the background as his older sister held her. His older brother burying him. As his two younger brothers trembled with anger on his other side. He wasn't sure how he felt. If he should be sad? Relieved? The death happened so fast. That was until he felt from behind, a small hand gently grabbed his. He didn't need to look back to see it was Bellana's. She got closer to him when he didn't push her away and gently hugged his arm. Showing her silent support. For whatever reason, this made Chilchuck realized this was real. And began to cry. Bellana held him. And helped him through the rest of the grieving period. He felt that this was the first time someone cared for him like that.
āƒ around the age of ten, Chilchuck realized he had feelings for Bellana. He denied it for awhile. Hitting himself when he'd catch himself admiring her. Saying that it's normal, that he was a boy so obviously he would find her attractive! It was normal and didn't mean anything! They were just friends. Bellana realized around age eleven. Realizing how her cheeks would heat up when he stood so close to her that she'd have to look up to meet his eyes. And how everything she does seems to be better if he's by her side.
āƒ one night when they were both eleven, their village held a big party to celebrate the new year. It was a big banquet outside. Starting at sundown. First they'd eat then dance until sunrise. On an outdoor dance floor decorated with banners, balloons, candles and fire lights. The village had them every year. But this one seemed special to them.
āƒ Bellana was talking with her girl friends on the dance floor about who they hoped would ask them to dance tonight. When Bellana was asked, she bashfully said Chilchuck. Her friends criticized her, saying Chilchuck was very shy and seemed rude to most. But some said they see the appeal (saying they liked that he was tall.)
āƒ That same night, Chilchuck couldn't keep his eyes off her. She was wearing a new blue sun dress her mother made for her. And he thought she looked beautiful. Thinking about how the low lights with the light blue dress seemed to make her glow. That's when one of his brothers noticed this, caught on quickly, and tried to get him to ask her to dance. He refused, saying he couldn't. This caused his brother to get annoyed and shoved Chilchuck into Bellana.
āƒ Chilchuck was of course a mess, and basically the convo went like this. "B-Bel..! You- uh.. would you- I mean- uh you wanna- (cursing in a different tongue.)" "Are you... asking me to dance, Chil..?" "Uh.. yeah...?"
āƒ About a year later and a half later, another party/festival was thrown. Their village often had stuff like this, and the two would go to every one of them together. Drinking and dancing had become their thing. And it wasn't long until the whole village new of the young love birds. People were now just making bets of when they would get married. but they had been doing that since they were kids.
āƒ this time, Chilchuck walked her there, brought her a flower, she wore a brand new yellow dress with her nicer jewelry. Since it was a special holiday for the half-foots.
āƒ the two did a lot more drinking this time; being thirteen, so close to adults no one really cared. They both got pretty drunk by the end of the night. And danced until morning. But even when the party shut down, they still wanted some more time together. So they went for a walk. Finding their way to Bellana family's barn. They had laid on the hayloft. Looking at the stars through a hole in the roof and talking. where the alcohol got the better of them. And ended up making love in the hayloft out of wedlock. Which is l considered very taboo for their hometown.
āƒ Bellana noticed her period was late about three weeks later. And was already experiencing symptoms since half-foot pregnancies only last 4 months. Such as vomiting and fatigue. She told Chilchuck right away. Who was shocked but slightly (extremely) panicked.
āƒ Bellana was extremely upset, she cried and was convinced her parents would kick her out. And that they'd be shamed, and their child would be shunned from the village. So Chilchuck said they should just get married. if they got married now people wouldn't find out. Bellana didn't really like this, since she always wanted a nice wedding and not a rushed one, even if it was Chilchuck. And wanted Chilchuck to propose to her properly because he loved her, not because they had to out of obligation. But Chilchuck reassured her he always wanted to marry her anyways. And might as well do it now rather than later.
āƒ so they had a very quick wedding which was basically the papers and I dos with the witnesses being her parents and his mother.
āƒ Bellana's parents were suspicious of the sudden quick wedding. Especially since they weren't even fourteen yet. But they didn't want to think their daughter would do something like that. Meanwhile Chilchuck's mother didn't really care, having five kids and all, two of which were married and living in on their own.
āƒ a couple weeks later when it was clear Bellana couldn't hide her pregnancy anymore she told both families. Her mother was happy, but her father was suspicious. He had always been not so approving of Chilchuck to begin with. Thinking his daughter deserved better than an emotionally distant locksmith who already had drinking problems before fifteen. This caused many fights between Bellana and her father.
Meijack
āƒ Since she was pregnant, Bellana's parents let Chilchuck stay with them for awhile.
āƒ one night when just the two of them were eating. Bellana said she wanted to move out of the village when they were both fourteen. Chilchuck was surprised, and asked if she was sure. She said despite the wedding the villagers caught on and weren't happy. That she wanted a fresh start, and her parents being so overbearing was hard on her too.
āƒ Chilchuck always wanted to leave and explore dungeons as his dream job. So he agreed, he brought the idea up to Bellana, but she said she didn't like it. She said that it was no time to chase his silly childhood dream. So he didn't bring it up again. Being a locksmith was fine for now.
āƒ Bellana was on the shorter side while Chilchuck is quite tall. Meijack got his genes and was a bigger baby. That made the first pregnancy harder on Bellana. By the 4th month she found it hard to move and breathe. Chilchuck took off work just so he could stay home and take care of her during these times. Despite her strong protests against it saying she's fine.
āƒ when he was finally aloud to see his daughter he cried a bit. Bellana was sleeping. When she woke up she asked if he was disappointed it wasn't a son. Chilchuck said no, that having a son or daughter meant nothing to him. Bellana felt touched, and loved how Meijack looked like him. She came up with the name Mei, Chilchuck picked Jack. So there came Meijack Chils.
Flertom
āƒ Two months later, being parents was a lot harder for them than they were expecting. one night when her parents were gone, And Meijack was finally in bed. They sat down and drank together for the first time in a very long time. They had too much to drink.
āƒ Flertom was conceived that night.
āƒ when Bellana realized she was pregnant again she was pissed at Chilchuck for several days. Who felt bad, saying he really tried to pull out in time but in his drunken state had totally forgotten.
āƒ when they told her parents, her father got upset. Saying they were going too fast for not even being adults yet. Bellana and her father argued at the dinner table. He brought up Chilchuck's job and saying he couldn't support her or their kids financially or emotionally. Causing Bellana to storm out.
āƒ Chilchuck stayed, nervous. That's when her father talked some sense into him. Saying that if he wanted to be a good husband and father, he needed to get his issues with being emotionally vulnerable and open under control. Which actually helped Chilchuck. And along his wife's second pregnancy, he worked on himself for his new family.
āƒ Chilchuck and Bellana talk, and decided that they'll wait until the second baby is born until they move. They're from the northern continent in small village in a half-foot territory. They decided to move to the eastern continent, where a decent sized half-foot city was. And they figured it wasn't too far from home. Since their children deserved to see their grandparents at least on some holidays. And there were many dungeons in the eastern continent, which is why Chilchuck agreed but he didn't tell Bellana this.
āƒ Bellana's second pregnancy was a bit more draining since her body hadn't fully recovered from the first one. One night, she woke up with an intense fever. This caught Chilchuck's attention, he cooled her off with some cold rags. She went back to sleep, but he stayed up all night watching her. She still had a fever in the morning so he tried to get her to go to the doctor. She refused saying she's fine, after some back and forth she gave in. They went to the doctors, and were told that she would be more likely to get sick than last time. Being her immune system was still down from the first pregnancy.
āƒ this pregnancy wasn't as hard on her body physically as last time. But she got more frequent and intense fevers and sickness, and it was harder to eat than with Meijack.
āƒ Bellana felt very insecure this pregnancy. Chilchuck could see this, but didn't really know how to handle it. He wanted to tell her how beautiful he thought she still was, but was often too shy and awkward to do so. So instead he'd bring her flowers and candies when he came home from work everyday. And held her closer to him at night.
āƒ Chilchuck turned fourteen while she was pregnant with Flertom. Bellana is a couple months older than him, she turned 14 in the two month gap between pregnancies.
āƒ bellana felt bad she couldn't do more for his birthday being so pregnant. But she made him a cake, and his signature gloves that he always wears. Chilchuck loved them obviously and wore them almost everyday he worked for years.
āƒ the two bickered a lot during the second pregnancy. Although Bellana doesn't remember them very well due to exhaustion. Chilchuck however did, but tried not to hold a grudge. Which was very hard for him, being his character to often do so. But he made an effort for her and their marriage. They were never serious arguments, just petty disagreements about small things.
āƒ her birth was like the last one. But this time Chilchuck argued to stay in the room with bellana. Which made her mother's opinion on him turn sour. But Bellana got him to leave finally saying he needed to take care of Meijack.
Moving
āƒ Bellana's parents didn't take the news that they were moving well. Chilchuck's mother was hurt but accepted it and wished him well.
āƒ bellana and her father got into a big argument. Where it was revealed they knew the whole time of the premarital sex and marrying out of obligation and they were trying to ignore it. Which is why they were not very supportive throughout the pregnancies or marriage.
āƒ her father actually said that he didn't believe they married out of love, and that they would be divorced in two years and she'll come back to them with both of the kids. (Which is actually part of the reason Bellana lived with Flertom during their estranged period. Because she didn't want to prove her parents right. It was also a reason she didn't get a full on divorce as well and it was more of a break if anything. Besides the obvious, that she still loved Chilchuck and wanted things to work. But her father's words did have some influence lol)
āƒ Their moving day got sped up because of that. And ended up catching a merchant in the early morning that would bring them to the harbor, which they took a ship to the eastern continent. They had a long talk on the ride there. Where they both admitted they didn't regret the girls or getting married, they just wished it came later in life.
āƒ They moved to a more populated area towards the west. It was closer to mixed race territories, but where they actually settled down was in a half-foot town. Since it was a bigger and more populated area, they could purchase a house instead of building one. They bought a decent sized one with the money Chilchuck saved up. But it only had two bedrooms. So the girls would have to share.
āƒ for a few years when the girls were young he just worked as a simple lock smith. It was hard, but some days it barely got the family of four by. This is when he habits of not eating as much as he should started. Wanting more for his girls and wife. Bellana often protested but he would put his foot down. Eventually it became clear he needed more than what he was bringing to the table. So he started dungeon work, very much against Bellana's wishes.
āƒ When he first brought it up it was a huge fight. Her throwing at him "you have two daughters to think about?! You're going to just go off and die and leave them fatherless, and me, a widow to raise them on my own?!" But soon she couldn't protest any longer. They're not many jobs he could do since they lived in a more mixed race area. Not many jobs paid good for half-foots. So she agreed. But he'd only do light work. Which is what he did for awhile. He'd tag with adventures on small dungeons, lock pic, translate, and be a better pair of eyes and ears. It was on these small trips that he learned about traps. Almost getting caught a couple times had scared him enough to read up heavily on them. And when he went out again he could put these things he learned into practice. Being the fast learner that he is he picked it up in no time.
Puckpatti
āƒ funny enough Puckpatti was also unplanned and more or less an accident. But just as welcomed and loved as the other two girls.
āƒ they were doing good for awhile. It wasn't until Puckpatti was born a year after they moved that he started to really panic.
āƒ although since they were away from the village and away from her mother. Chilchuck not only finally got to be in the room for his daughters birth but was actually the one to deliver her this time. He was nervous as hell and was panicking like crazy when her water broke. But soon he went into full serious dad/husband mode. Putting the girls up in their room with toys and snacks telling them not to leave unless they had to. As he stayed with his wife. It was easier obviously because by this time Bellana was a pro at this.
āƒ as much as Bellana being pregnant made him want to work more. He knew he had to cut back to take care of his wife and young children. He cut back in work more and more the later into her pregnancy. But the second the baby was born went to working much more to make up for lost time.
āƒ he was horrified of the thought that his girls would go hungry. Or that his children would have to get jobs young like he did to feed and clothe themselves. He started going into work alcoholic mode. He was going deeper and deeper into dungeons everyday. Staying later and later, longer and longer. To where he was no longer coming home to his family every night, but instead every few days. But he would leave almost immediately the next day or two days.
āƒ this greatly effected bellana of course. Causing her a lot of stress and anxiety. Not to mention the girls missed him more and more everyday. As did she. So once night she sat him down and had a talk. She discussed how it was hard doing this alone. Especially that he was never around. He understood, and started taking longer breaks in between jobs. This was good for everyone, and was nice for awhile. But in order to do this, Chilchuck had to go deeper into the dungeons for more money quicker so he could take these longer breaks.
Raising the girls/dungeon work
āƒ Because he was going deeper into dungeons more quickly. It was harder and harder each day. But he never died on these small dungeons, since they weren't like Thistle's where they had a spell on it. And weren't as dangerous either.
āƒ it was around this time he started drinking again. It was slow, and only really did it after jobs and when the girls were asleep. It was more like a hobby for him at this time. Since he's not actually an alcoholic like his father is. Alcoholism is partly a genetic trait, and he wasn't sure if he had inherited it from his father or not. But since he seemed to be able to control himself, and was able to think and look forward to other things throughout the day. He assumed he was in the clear.
āƒ When he spent his time at home, he spent most of his time with his girls. The first day he would come back he'd spend all day sleeping. Where Bellana would tell the girls not to bother their father, because he needs his rest. They always whine but understand. Because the next day he'll spend the whole day with his family. He'd also help around the house with chores and anything else while he was there. Which Bellana would also tell him he didn't need to do and it was her job, his job was to provide. But he'd always argue that he couldn't just sit there while everyone else was working. Despite her protests, she's always happy he's willing to help. Sometimes she does have to have certain jobs that she holds for him, because she'd rather he do it.
āƒ Meijack caused her parents a lot of worry when she was younger. She was always a shy kid, hiding behind her parent's legs when meeting new people. But that was normal for some children. When she was a baby she rarely cried and rarely made noise. Even as a toddler, while Flertom was babbling nonsense away at a young age, Meijack was quiet. If she wanted something she'd hum and point, drag her parents to what she wanted, or put something in their hand to communicate. This greatly worried them, especially Bellana who would cry to Chilchuck at night wondering why her daughter wasn't talking. Chilchuck would comfort her, saying she was probably just a late bloomer. And if not, and she really was mute. They'd get through it together, and figure out what they'd need to do for her. Finally, when she was about three, she said her first words. Which were "more please" durning dinner. Bellana was so happy she almost cried. As Meijack grew older she got more confident with her speech with her family. But was very quiet in public and basically never talked in wide social situations. Finally at four they took her to a doctor where she was diagnosed to have selective mutism.
āƒ When Puckpatti was younger, she got bullied a lot. Mostly for being small and what other kids considered "dumb" because of her carefree, airhead like attitude. This really hurt her self esteem for awhile. Meijack being the over protective sister she was, would defend her, tell the kids off especially if they were older. And would start walking with her to school. Flertom was less confrontational. But if she saw it happening she would step in. Normally though she'd just comfort her little sister. This obviously upset her parents. Chilchuck would be angry and Bellana upset. She'd tell Puckpatti that the kids were just jealous, and that's what kids do and they're cruel. Chilchuck would want to talk to their parents, but Bellana would worry that it could disrupt the peace. Luckily it never got physical, and it only lasted when she was really little. It was gone by the time she was in her teens. Which reminds me of this dialogue: "Dad, am I ugly?" "Of course not. You're the most beautiful girl in the world."
āƒ Chilchuck would tell the girls lots of folklore from their homeland when he was home. Although most of them wouldn't have happy endings, and would end up scaring the girl. Bellana would fuss at him to go easier on them. But he would argue that fear is how they learn and it would keep them safe. He would tell stories of trolls that would take kids that wandered too far in the woods. Fairies that steal your sweets if you don't eat your vegetables. Mermaids that would drown you if you swam too far in the sea or lakes even. But, he would also tell them stories of the dungeons with the purpose of keeping them away from the dungeons. Stories of an adventurer who thought exploring dungeons would be fun, and him never comes home. Obviously that terrified them, because he goes in dungeons. And for awhile they were more clingy and terrified of him not coming home one day. Where he has to give them the talk; "I've always come home before haven't I? And I'll always come home after."
āƒ Chilchuck had a bad habit of yelling and losing his temper quickly. Mostly when they would do something that could've gotten them hurt, and he got angry out of worry. But after he calmed down, he'd always apologize to them, and calmly explained that he just worried about them because he loved them. And didn't want to see them get hurt, then tell them what they did was wrong or dangerous and why they shouldn't do it again.
āƒ when they were only babes, Bellana discussed with Chilchuck how she'd like him to teach them some of the other languages he spoke. Since he knew seven whole languages and her only three. So growing up he'd talk to them in multiple languages, Meijack learned three fluently and parts of two. Flertom also learned three and parts of one other, (and ended up learning dwarfish herself later on.) but Puckpatti only learned one extra one since she never took her father's lessons seriously.
āƒ when Meijack and Flertom were young. One night they couldn't sleep because Bellana and Chilchuck were arguing in the next room. Flertom earlier that day had learned that they were both born the same year their parents got married. Meijack had memorized their wedding date due to a previous conversation. Being a bit older, they did the math with Meijack's birthday and the wedding. And revealed she was probably conceived about a month before than. Flertom made the comment of "you made them get married before they were ready. No wonder they fight all the time." Not thinking anything of it. Because of this, Meijack has actually blamed herself as a child (irrationally of course) for her parents issues for awhile. When they could fight she secretly wished she wasn't born, thinking it was her fault.
āƒ at ages four and two ish, Flertom had found a black, orange and white calico kitty. She brought it home and begged her mother to let her keep it. Meijack and Puckpatti saw this as well and joined in. Also wanting the kitty. Chilchuck was on a job at the time. So Bellana said it was up to their father, since his money would ultimately be the one paying for it. But she made it clear she wouldn't be taking care of the cat, and it would be the girls' collective responsibility. They agreed and waited for their father to return. Letting the cat stay with them til' then. When Chilchuck finally came home the very first thing he saw was a cat being shoved in his face and all three of his daughters' big puppy eyes. With a "daddy can we keep him. Pleeeeeeeease." Chilchuck wanted to say no at first, but seeing them all beg him like that wore him down. And he reluctantly agreed. He was the stereotypical dad who didn't want the cat but ended up loving the cat. The girls argued on a name, but eventually settled on Pebbles.
āƒ the girls favorite toys growing up were, a lock box and a few spinners for Meijack. A red dragon plush that had dried rice in it for Flertom. And a doll with button eyes and yarn hair for Puckpatti. Which Chilchuck all kept in a box in his workshop when they got older. Filled with more of their toys and some baby clothes and blankets they liked as well.
āƒ Meijack had some more problems too growing up. As Chilchuck slowly started to spend more and more time in the dungeons. Leaving for weeks and weeks at a time. Rumors around their town started to circle. The other parents would talk. Gossiping, saying he must not love his wife. And dungeon work must be an excuse to stay away from home. That Bellana must be a mean wife. That he must find his children irritating. Etc etc. which of course trickled down to the children. Who would make fun of Meijack and Flertom. Laughing at them saying their father doesn't really love them and is avoiding them. Flertom would just cry, saying they're wrong. While Meijack would get angry and violent. Ending up getting into fights with other half-foot children. If it was another race child, she'd end up throwing rocks or sticks at them. She would get badly hurt, and of course in a lot of trouble. Bellana was furious with her when she was first dragged in by one of the parents. That is until Meijack broke down sobbing, telling her everything that had been happening. Meijack being Meijack, she didn't tell her parents about any of this til now. This caught Bellana by surprise since she never acts like this, causing her to be softer. But the one that talked to Meijack most about this was of course Chilchuck, her having always been a daddy's girl after all. He would hold her, calm her down after her fits of rage, clean her up. When the parents finally got together to talk about what was happening. Chilchuck made it very clear that "his situation. His family, and his marriage were not a topic of gossip. And they should be ashamed of themselves for getting the children involved."
āƒ once they were old enough he tired to teach all of them trades and skills he knew. Such as lock picking, how to tailor clothing, haggling prices down, repairing things like that. Meijack obviously picked up lock picking very well. So as she grew older he continued to teach her the trade. Flertom surprisingly really took to haggling and bargaining. So much so that when her mother moved in with her as an adult, she ended up doing all the shopping because she could always get the seller to bring the price down. And Puckpatti, somehow learned from her father's lessons is how to have a good poker face and become a convincing liar. Chilchuck still isn't sure how that happened.
āƒ Flertom was a sensitive girl. She'd cry the most, was the most affectionate, and wanted to spend the most time with the parents. Chilchuck and Bellana referred to her as, "the little sweetheart." But said she had her mother's temper and father's sharp tongue when it came to it.
āƒ Puckpatti was always the baby. She gave them the most trouble growing up. Having the most tantrums as a child. If she didn't get her way she'd simply start screaming. She was especially hard on poor Chilchuck when he was taking care of her by himself. Sometimes even holding her breath until she got her way. When she would throw her tantrums, Bellana would deal with it by talking her down. And Chilchuck would simply ignore her til she tired herself out, then talk to her about what happened and what made her upset like his wife does.
āƒ when Meijack was eleven she told her parents she was feeling attraction to other woman, and not men. Flertom always had been a bit boy crazy. So it scared her that she never felt the things her sister did. But instead, seemed to get flustered when the pretty elf girls or half-foots would compliment her freckles and long, ginger hair. She told Chilchuck first, who was more excepting immediately with his more world and people experience. She was more scared to tell her mother. Bellana didn't get it at first, not understanding. But she wasn't prejudiced. Just didn't quite understand, not hearing something like that often. But after some time, and some talking with Chilchuck. She understood one simple thing, she loved her daughter and just wanted her to be happy.
āƒ as the girls got older and more independent. he didn't necessarily need to spend as much time at home. So he started moving back to doing longer dungeon work. Staying out longer, going deeper, not staying home as much anymore. It bothered Bellana at first but she kept quiet. Knowing they needed the money.
āƒ Meijack moved out a few weeks after she turned fourteen. Getting employed as a locksmith under a larger company. Chilchuck gave all his girls a sum of money to get them on their feet when they moved out. Flertom moved out a few months after her fourteenth birthday. Staying close to home, she got a job at a local tavern as a waitress. In an area popular among dwarves. Puckpatti stayed about a year after her sisters. But left when she was only twelve. Both Chilchuck and Bellana heavily protested, saying she should wait til she's an adult like her sisters and they did. But she argued saying they got married before they were adults so she should be aloud to move out. So despite her parent's wishes, she left. Neither of them really knew what she did, since she barely kept in touch the first year which heavily worried them. but soon she started sending letters, saying she was traveling with a group and she was okay. Later Chilchuck would run into her at a market where she was selling dragon dung. He was a little disappointed this is what she decided to do, but knew he couldn't stop her. In his own words, "it'll burn her someday." So he just reminded her that she will always have a place to come back to if (when) needed.
The island
āƒ About a year later Chilchuck wanted to retired and open up his own locksmith shop as a way to continue to support him and his wife, keep himself busy, and to save money to pass onto his girls when they both pass. But he was no where near the goal he needed to reach. This was around the time of the rumor of the island with a huge dungeon under it where you couldn't die had been going around local adventurers. So after a very, very, very long and hard talk with Bellana. She agreed to move to the island with him. Only really agreeing to it because apparently he wouldn't die. So they moved, more temporarily if anything, Flertom took over their old home.
āƒ One of the first jobs was where he was tricked to be used as bait for a succubus. This is the first time he went home and Bellana saw him truly terrified, and on the verge of tears. She tried to comfort him but he was practically inconsolable. She saw a noticeable change that night with him.
āƒ After that, he dove harder into work, and alcohol. He started the guild to protect half-foots. And started to be a bigger advocate for them, even though he had always been very outspoken against the harsh treatment towards his people. He became even more so.
āƒ so Bellana began to see less and less of her beloved husband. And every time he'd come home, he seemed different every time. Every time he came back from a job his attitude got worse and worse. He drank more and more. Where it went from just a hobby before to now a coping mechanism. Although he never ever laid a hand on her, and never insulted her or had violent outbursts of any kind. He was noticeably more cold and distant. Seemingly always something on his mind. He never shared what happened when he was away, which he did before hand as well. It didn't bother her much back then since he always seemed fine and came back with a smile. But now he was coming home with injuries she'd never seen before. And he was never home. He'd be gone for weeks, come home for only two days before he was gone again on average. Leaving Bellana alone in the house, on an island where she knew no one. Their affection of course dropped, they had barely made love since they moved there. And would barely be affectionate when he was home. Bellana quickly grew tired. Beginning to think that maybe he was finally growing bored of her, moving on or falling out of love even. The thoughts of another woman also crossed her mind.
āƒ along the way, Chilchuck met a group whom he quickly grew rather fond of. He told them happily about his beautiful wife and three daughters who were already all independent and living on their own.
āƒ one particular trip, they ran into a group of succubus. Two succubus had gone after Chilchuck, both blond beauties with long hair, light eyes and tall slender yet curvy figures. The group saves him, and immediately assumes that must be what his wife looks like! Chilchuck on the other hand is horrified, his wife looks absolutely nothing like that! But he figured they'd drop it. He questions his subconscious loyalty to his wife for awhile. Until he comes to the conclusion that they were just showing a sexual fantasy he had and nothing more. He still loves Bellana and she is still the most beautiful woman in the world to him. She is his wife and mother of his three kids. They were just a horny thought. Nothing more.
āƒ this isn't brought up again until the night the party meet Bellana. The party insisted they meet her, very curious about their young looking member's family. Eventually he agrees, seeing no harm in it. Bellana is delighted when he invites her to dinner with his coworkers. She thinks this could be the start for things to look up with them. That maybe this was him letting her into this part of his life. she gets herself all dressed up. A little bit extra to hope maybe she'll catch his attention and maybe even make love again that night afterwards. They hadn't in months at this point. But Chilchuck grumbles at her, saying it's not that big of a deal and it's just casual. It hurts her a bit but she pushes it away. Trying to understand where he was coming from.
āƒ Chilchuck was grumpy in the beginning of the night. But loosened up when he started drinking and talking to his friends. Bellana saw how happy he was smiling with his companions and even other woman that it hurt her. It made her feel insignificant, and that he was falling out of love with her. The attention she got from the men of the party, and how Chilchuck barely bothered to tell them to "fuck off she's taken." Hurt as well, but she felt she was being nit-picky. Until finally, one of the party members spoke up. Saying that she was nothing what they all thought she'd look like, since she looks nothing like his fantasy. Confused, Bellana asked them to explain. Whole Chilchuck's face dropped, he immediately aggressively shook his head, waving his arms wildly to tell them to shut it. But soon the whole party started to join in, finding it funny. They explained what a succubus was. And what they do, they explained, in great detail, how his succubus turned into naked woman with long, curly blond hair and blue or green eyes with model type bodies. Some, not even being half-foots. That absolutely broke Bellana, and in her mind confirmed it. Chilchuck had completely fallen out of love with her. He didn't even find her physically attractive anymore. And that maybe the succubus had even turned into his mistress.
āƒ Chilchuck tried to explain, saying it was nothing more than a fantasy he's had since a child. Soon the party laughed it off, and the conversation moved on. Chilchuck tried to forget about it and moved on himself shortly afterwards. But Bellana didn't say anything much for the rest of the dinner.
āƒ on their way home they night, she had completely shut down. Refusing to take his arm when he offered, barely looking at him, and answering in a short blunt tone as they walked home. Which Chilchuck remembered as her just being "moody." He thought maybe the party members had said something to upset her. Or she was just tired. So he let it go. Which hurt Bellana even more that he never even bothered to ask what was wrong.
- the next morning he was gone. That party had ended up planning another run, it was much shorter so he saw no harm in not waking Bellana up to say goodbye this time.
āƒ Bellana woke up to an empty bed. And the first thing she did was cry. She sobbed alone in an empty house all morning. Until finally pulling herself together. She made her decision. She was going to get off the island. She would go to Flertom, since she was closest. If Chilchuck didn't love her anymore like she suspected then fine. But if he did, then surely he'd come find her right? He'd come and they'd talk and they'd be able to work out their problems and be happy again like they use to be. Bellana didn't pack much, mostly just clothes, but by night fall she was on a ship towards the eastern continent.
āƒ a few days later she arrived at Flertom's aka her old door step in the rain. Tears streaming down her cheeks. Flertom was shocked, letting her in. Her mind went to the worse. Dad was dead. He either drank himself to death or was killed in the dungeons. But once Bellana explained Flertom felt sad. As a kid they seemed so in love. She had no idea they've had so many problems for years. The last year being the absolute worst. She didn't remember all the fights they had when she and Mei were young. (Meijack did however. Being very perceptive. But never mentioned it in typical Meijack fashion.) Flertom let her mother stay there again of course. Asking what the plan is. Bellana said she'd wait. For her husband? She didn't know. For her to move on. For Chilchuck to come find her. For another man to sweep her off her feet and make her feel young again. She had no clue. But she was just going to wait and see.
āƒ when Chilchuck came home to an empty home he immediately panicked. Freaking out thinking the worse, he looked all over until he found the letter on his doorstep. Opening it, half expecting some sort of ransom letter. He was relieved but ļæ¼confused. Once he read that his wife had, in Flertom's words, "needed some air". He felt angry, betrayed and confused. He didn't know what to do, so of course, he drank himself until he was black out drunk.
āƒ For months he was too angry with her to do anything but seethe at every passing thought of her. To him this was a complete betrayal. As time passed, he subconsciously realized that he probably was all his fault. That he pushed her away in hindsight. But he had too much pride and anger to ever admit that to himself. So instead of dealing with it like an adult, he just fully threw himself into work. Never home. He eventually cleared out the house of all personal belongings. Barely standing to stay in it. He rented it out, moved all the stuff down in the basement where he stayed. The most frequent person he rented it too was actually Bellana's younger brother. "Gotta say Chil.. I really thought you and my big sis would last. You always seemed like quite the love birds when we were kids." "For the last time.. we're not divorced. Just estranged. We're still married. There's a clear difference. Now let's stop talking about this." "Uh huh..."
āƒ meanwhile Bellana had tried to date a man again mostly due to the daughters influence. But it felt wrong, and she ended up ghosting the poor green-eyed bartender after three dates.
Retirement
āƒ Then a year later he met Laios. He was planning to retire when Laios came to the guild wanting to hire a half-foot. Of course the obvious answer was for Chilchuck to go. But hearing that Laios wanted to go deeper, it seemed like a perfect excuse to get his mind off his marital problems. And we all know how most of that went. Three years later Falin got eaten and yada yada.
āƒ MANGA SPOILERS: after the kingdom rose from the sea. Chilchuck made it his job to help the half-foots get back on their feet. Partly another distraction. He started up the union again, to help put the half-foots back in work. It didn't take long with the new kingdom forming. So soon he was able to open up his shop like he wanted. Figuring it was still something to do and not just sit around in his misery. He decided to open it up in the kingdom instead since it was growing bigger by the day. And he would be the first locksmith shop. And also due to marcille's begging. He didn't bother seeing his wife again until Meijack had moved into the kingdom to work with Chilchuck.
āƒ Chilchuck had matured a lot since then. And mellowed out with the new quiet life. One night, he had invited all his girls to dinner at the castle. Heavily from Marcille's influence. But the other party members were curious about his daughters as well. Most of the night consisted of chasing Puckpatti away from Laios. Dragging Flertom away from Senshi. And removing Meijack from both Falin and Marcille. Marcille at dinner asked if he had talked to any of his other family members often. He had dinner with Flertom a few times and exchanged letters with Puckpatti, and seen her in passing once. She then popped the question about his wife, where he kinda shut down again. She scolded him, saying he said he would apologize to her after it was over. And it's been a year. He sighed and says she's right. He accidentally makes eye contact with Meijack. Who's staring at him intensely with a hopeful look in her eyes. He gets nervous and looks to the other side of him. Where Puckpatti and Flertom were both looking at him. Flertom with wide, teary eyes. And Puckpatti's bottom lip quivering. Those looks from his girls broke his heart.
āƒ that night he was up all night thinking everything over. He knew it was his fault. He knew he drove her away. He knew he had changed, and she didn't like it. He was finally able to admit it to himself. And he finally admitted to himself, that he did in fact, miss Bellana dearly.
āƒ within the next week. He traveled to their old home. He stood at the doorstep for at least ten minutes before finally knocking. Flertom was already home, so she answered. She was confused at first. Asking if he had sent a letter and she just missed it. He said no, and he was sorry for showing up unannounced. But he wanted to talk to her mother. Flertom looked shocked and like she was about to cry. She said of course and said she needed to go run some errands anyways (which was a lie) and she left. Despite Chilchuck saying she didn't need to. But he still appreciated the privacy.
āƒ Bellana was angry at first, not angry that he came. But angry it took him four years. The first words out of Chilchuck's mouth were. "I'm so sorry, Bel.." bellana asked what he wanted and he said to talk, but more importantly to apologize. She said fine, but she wanted to speak first. And she explained how she felt all those years. And explained what happened that night. He listened, her pointing out things he hadn't even thought of. And she apologized for not being the best wife at times. For starting fights when they were younger, and expecting more when he already did more than he could handle some days. He tried to tell her she had nothing to apologize for but she insisted she did. Then it was his turn. He explained what was happening, why he changed so much, and why it took him so long to find her again. And apologized for all of it. They fell into silence, when Bellana asked, "did you still love me..?" Which made Chilchuck felt like he was going to cry. Saying of course he did, he never stopped loving her and that even now he still does. Even during the years he was so angry with her and tried to convince himself he was better off, he knew deep down he still loved her.
āƒ she began to cry, and Chilchuck took her in his arms for the first time in years. They stood there and just cried with each other for awhile. Eventually asking what this meant for them. Chilchuck said he wanted to try again, but it was all up to her. She said she did too, but she wanted to take things slow. He agreed.
āƒ they started off seeing each other everyday. Going on little dates and outings. Chilchuck (eventually) introduced her to everyone at the party. Although he was very embarrassed, even more so as Bellana went out of her way to let them know how affectionate and "romantic" he was when they were younger. and telling them embarrassing stories about him and the girls as well. They also started having dinner as a whole family. Which was an adjustment for everyone. Affection was a little weird a first, not so much awkward as it was not knowing. Neither wanting to go too fast or make the other uncomfortable. They didn't sleep together again until about three months in. After about nine months of this things got back to almost how it was before. They moved into a one room cottage together a little ways away from his shop with a nice plot of land around it. Complete with a little white fence and everything.
āƒ about a year or two years. Chilchuck's prediction about Puck became true. Puckpatti's unserious attitude had gotten her into trouble. She got scammed out of all her money by people she had been traveling with, and robbed by a precious "business partner." And when trying to get back on her feet again, a group of fisherman she tried to get a job with tried to use her as bait for sea beasts. She managed to escape. And immediately went to her parents' home.
āƒ she collapsed into her mothers arms crying. Chilchuck was at work when this happened. Coming home to seeing Puckpatti wrapped up in a blanket as Bellana made dinner. He asked what she was doing here, and through tears she explained the situation. He sighed, he said he had warned her about all this. Not surprised but still sorry for her. Bellana scolded him gently, saying she needed comfort and empathy right now and not a lecture. He sighed and apologized. Then gave Puckpatti a hug. Saying she was welcomed in the home as long as she needed. Puckpatti stayed with them for a few months. Eventually finding a job at a flower shop. And moved out a few more months after working.
āƒ Meijack inherited Chilchuck's shop when he fully retired at forty-eight . She also met a big eyed, curly haired half-foot girl later in her life. Although they were never publicly affectionate, and were never married or even official courted. It was clear they were in a romantic relationship. They lived together above Meijack's shop. And really the only people who knew they were romantic was family. Everyone else in town thought they were simply friends and roommates. And really the only reason Meijack's family knew is because she was brought to family events and they were together for every holiday. And who brings their roommate to that stuff? Meijack took on an Puckpatti's son as an apprentice and would pass the shop onto him when she retired.
āƒ Flertom down the road eventually did meet a half-foot boy whom she quickly fell for. They had a very fast and messy relationship, and she ended up getting pregnant. They had a son, but he was unwilling to marry her. He said he just wanted to wait until he had more money. Chilchuck warned her, saying how he never liked the guy because he seemed to childish and not serious about her. That he thought her and her baby deserved better. and not marrying her was a red flag and she should be careful. Flertom got defensive, saying that he just wanted to provide for them. And that just because him and mom had a shotgun wedding doesn't mean she should. Chilchuck felt hurt but understood she was a grown adult. Flertom continued to work with the baby, Bellana baby sitting during the day. It was a boy named Kamkate, with the nickname Kammy. It wasn't until about a year later when Flertom got pregnant yet again that things went wrong. Her man still refused to marry her. So being done, and already having plenty or problems with him, (including suspects of him cheating,) she said he either marry her and start taking being a father for their children seriously. Or get out of her life. Fed up, he turned and walked out the door. Never to be seen again. Flertom struggled for awhile. Not able to keep up with everything as a now single mom of two, with a new baby girl named Starlea. Chilchuck decided to fund her money, enough the she wouldn't need to work and could raise her babies. Flertom was grateful, crying to him. Apologizing for their fight and saying he was doing too much. He told her to stop crying and that he would be a sad excuse for a father if he didn't held his daughter at her lowest point in life. Bellana also helped, going over almost everyday. Helping take care of the babies and teaching her all the things she's learned. Originally they had the last name of their father. But to be petty and since he clearly wasn't going to be apart of their lives, she gave their family names Chils instead. Chilchuck acted like he didn't care, but secretly he was flattered. (And proud because he knew he oneuped the shitty asshole that hurt his baby.) Once they were old enough for school Flertom was able to work again. About 2 years later she met a young dwarf man who was impressed that she was a single mother of two and was able to keep her and her babies afloat. Although it wasn't rich like her original fantasy he was a successful blacksmith. They fell in love, married, and later her children both learned the blacksmith trade. Able to make some pretty intricate stuff with their small hands. But despite getting married finally, Flertom kept their family names as Chils.
āƒ Puckpatti went through a lot of relationships through her life. With half-foots, tall men and even elves. Which caused her parents to be very worried for her. But despite this she never got pregnant. She took any get-rich-quick opportunity she could find. Constantly changing who she was traveling with and always moving. She didn't have a real job or even home for a long time. It wasn't until eveything went down and she moved back with her parents that she got her life together. As I said before she got a job as a florist. Very later in her life she met a grey-eyed tall man. It was nice for a while and they even got engaged. But it was broke off when he realized how badly he wanted children. It devastated her for awhile but she got back on her feet. She got a second job part time in a local book store, hired by an elderly gnome woman who was getting too old to run the shop. Eventually she took over when the gnome retired. 6 months later she met a blue eyes half foot who was a traveler from the north selling potions. He fell instantly for her, but she was cautious. But soon fell for him too. They got married about a year later and almost immediately had a son named Pepermac. Everyone was very relieved that she finally settled down to say the least.
