Something I’ve been thinking about lately is that small moment in “Air Turtle” where immediately after the Daves lose yet another game, Leo says how sorry he is and how he’s doing his best as the mascot. This moment is so short but it’s honestly jam-packed with a whole heap of characterization.

His need to apologize for things clearly not his fault - especially when it feels like he messes up the job he was given despite doing the best he can (the phrase “it’s not about you” takes a new meaning when this is one of the lessons to be learned from that - that he is not always solely responsible for things going wrong), his need to save face and make a connection with an older adult man in his life (something he consistently does throughout the series - he’s got a few daddy issues, always collecting potential father figures, it’s no wonder he jumps at the bit to keep rapport), and the way he sounds and looks and the words he chooses really pushes how he is just a kid (“Mr. the Dunk, I’m so sorry”).

Like I know it’s a one off moment that doesn’t truly mean much, but when put against the rest of the series it works really well with the rest of Leo’s established character and helps in solidifying later concepts as well.

You talk a lot about Donnie's triggers when it comes to Raph and Leo, but what about Mikey? Is there anything specifically related to him that would freak Donnie out?

mikey gets brought up the least because he's the least physically imposing, and he very rarely got violent. his abuse was almost solely psychological, at least in the beginning, whereas raph was mostly verbal and leo was a mix of,, uh. everything lol (note that even before he smacked him, even before the closet, he was mentioned to be throwing things at him). most of mikey's abuse was caused by leo except for that one incident in the kitchen, so donnie tends to see leo as more of a threat than he does mikey when he's in a bad headspace. when mikey's alone, he doesn't think he's going to be hurt UNLESS he seriously seems to upset or anger him. (i think if donnie ever hurts mikey during an episode, he's going to take it a lot worse than if it were raph and leo. partially because he's smaller and younger, but also because of. right after the closet. yeah)

i actually think most of the things specifically about mikey were addressed in cw, though, because they were more emotional things-- the fear of being talked about when he wasn't around, for example. all of the food insecurity stems from him, too. leo was a nasty evil gaslighter but mikey was the one that just outright lied constantly, mostly in an effort to "protect donnie's feelings" (or at least to look like he was) and that's a big reason he finds that so uncomfortable. of course he's going to correlate hiding things to actually protect his feelings with talking behind his back.

I have unintentionally developed this whole post-Vol 2/pre-flashpoint timeline for Booster Gold and his little time travel family. There are three major components:

Rip Hunter is not around anymore. He’s not dead, obviously, but it’s reached a point in their personal timelines where they’re meant to separate. Rip can’t mentor the younger version of his dad forever nor should he. Booster has learned everything he needs to know from Rip, and now it’s time to part ways and make their own choices without the future influencing them. While Booster does occasionally come across younger and less experienced versions of Rip Hunter, all future Rips have effectively disappeared. Now separated, Booster sets up his own base elsewhere.

Booster and Michelle raise Rani in Neo-Gotham. Specifically the early 22nd century. This is Neo-Gotham at the end of Terry’s Batman career. It is more or less implied that sometime in the 22nd century, a nuclear war breaks out and gives way to the next dark ages. You can’t leave traces/ripples if they’re wiped from existence. Booster is still active in the 21st century by virtue of being an established hero there, but once keeping up appearances is over, he returns to the 22nd. Michelle stays in the 22nd century and just lives her life there.

Booster’s mystery future wife is Trixie Collins. After reuniting at some nebulous future date and going through a whole crisis together, Trixie can’t go back to her (unfulfilling) life, so Booster moves her to the 22nd century. At some point, she and Booster decide to act on the chemistry from their early years, and Rip is unintentionally conceived. Booster decides to retire from the 21st century hero scene, and they get married. But pretty early on, they realize that they’re not really romantically interested in each other. It’s partly acknowledgement of comphet society and that they’re both decidedly on the far side of the Kinsey Scale and also Booster is more or less too traumatized to truly emotionally connect to another person anymore. Booster and Trixie are still on good terms, so they stay married (and eventually come to consider each other best friends). And by virtue of being married, Trixie ends up getting more involved in Booster’s time cop thing and starts handling his logistics. They make a great team.

So from here, my brain came up with the following scenario:

Rani wants to become a superhero.

Rani-centric story idea under the cut. This one really got away from me.

The 22nd century is absolutely not a good time to get into heroics, and Rani knows that. That’s exactly why Booster chose it.

Rani has her own super power set, but it's not combat oriented. But there is this desire baked into her soul, so she takes a page (a whole chapter, really) from Booster Gold’s book. She steals a power suit and a time sphere and… doesn’t quite succeed as planned.

Instead of 1990s Metropolis, Rani finds herself in mid-21st century Gotham, the height of the legacy generation of heroes. Much to Rani's annoyance, Booster asked Nightwing and a not-quite-yet-retired Batman to keep an eye on her. It's mostly to prevent anyone else from solidly putting together that "Gold Star" is the infamous Booster Gold's daughter. Having the Bats' backing also means Rani isn't just plopped into the world with no legal records or emergency contacts.

Rani's story is mostly hijinks and heroics.

She's a D-list hero who frequently finds herself teaming up with other heroes, but she struggles to connect with any teams.

She keeps running into Legionnaires investigating some sort of intricate time travel plot and finds herself fighting alongside them to save the world. Unlike the 21st century heroes, Rani does connect with the 31st century heroes.

Sometimes, Rani also gets caught up in the Carter family business and gets swept away on a few time traveling adventurers with characters like Gold Beetle, a younger Rip Hunter (and Jack Soo), and even her baby brother, Junior.

In her downtime, Rani works part-time and does a few odd jobs here and there. Her saving grace is that she doesn't have to pay rent since she "inherited" Booster's townhouse.

Specific plot points include:

Booster's old JLI teammates immediately recognizing that Rani is Booster's daughter. They are equal parts glad that he's out there somewhere just living well instead of dead in a ditch, forgotten, and also hurt that Booster never introduced his family to them and that they had to find out from his teenage daughter.

In Time Masters: Vanishing Point #5, Booster warps their home to the end of time in order to lose the time assassins that had been chasing them. Time pirates also got to Rani in order to get the location of Vanishing Point from her, but she doesn't know it since Booster (with Trixie and Junior) abandoned the 22nd century shortly after Rani left. While the Carters frequently visit Rani, Rani doesn't have the means to visit them.

Rani overcomes her avoidance of the 31st century in order to save the world. While there, she becomes an official reserve member of the Legion. She returns to the 21st century anyway, not yet ready to give up on it.

Give me the Booster Gold: Convergence plot line, and Rani has to deal with the aftermath.. or maybe just ignore the whole Convergence thing and straight up rip off the time cancer subplot. Booster is bouncing through time uncontrollably, and Rani , Michelle, and an older Rip are chasing him down until they end up in the 90s (Rani finally gets a glimpse of the 90s and is disappointed) and find Booster in Ted's lab. Rani takes the place of N52 Booster in this. Everyone goes to Vanishing Point, and Booster transforms into Waverider. That has some wildly angsty potential.

The time cancer plot ends with Waverider returning everyone to their intended times. There's no universe-shattering crisis this time, so it's more like Waverider just isn't fully in-tune with his powers yet and fixed the anomalies by instinct rather than intent. It does mean that Rani finds herself in the 31st century and needs to be rescued from a dead planet and her own panic attack by the Legion.

Rani, fully attached to the Legion of Superheroes, officially-officially joins their group and decides to permanently stay in the 31st century as a hero.

Other notes:

There are also some implications that Booster may be nudging events in certain directions to keep the flow of time steady. Unbeknowst to Rani, Booster pre-programmed a different year and location for her to land in and disguised it as a glitch. He may or may have also arranged for some run-ins between her and some Legionnaires.

There’s a little hint at an abandoned Rani-centric plot thread towards the end of Vol 2. My guess is that there was supposed to be a 31st century arc for Booster Gold where he'd earn the trust and friendship of Braniac 5. I'm also guessing that Rani, who is shown to be a literal super genius, is more important than initially believed. She was probably supposed to be returned to the 31st century to fullfil some sort of essential role and subsequently not be adopted by the Carters because DC is allergic to happy parent-child relationships. I will be ignoring this guess.

Rani still has PTSD from Daxam's destruction and suffers from anxiety in her day-to-day. While she should have been returned to her intended place in the 31st century, she was too distressed by 1) being unadopted by Booster and 2) being in the time Daxam was destroyed and Emerald Empress is lose. Altogether, it was decided that Rani would stay with Booster and Michelle (and Rip as well, at the time). Either way, Rani refused to step foot in the 31st century, so Booster only ever brought his son of the two to visit Brainiac. Rani's knowledge of the Legion is restricted to what Booster and Junior have told her.

here are some screenshots w notes on them and dynamics etc

illi: glue of the group, introduces them all to each other. for the sake of this, illi and louise are not related. name is from the 4k rendition of the mv. incredibly ambitious and always creates the main idea for the schemes that the group gets up to. kind of only nonbinary due to the fact that illi is an incredibly interesting name, and a very open opportunity for me to make revenge gerard even more nonbinary. their uniform is neat and tidy, not particularly out of respect for the school, but more out of awareness of their own appearance. into fashion but doesn't really know how to deal with their hair. just lets it grow out and fucks with it in the moment. croquet mallet is blue, so draws a lot of inspiration from veronica sawyer. they/she pronouns? maybe? but i lean towards they/them.

frances: placeholder name i guess? it's important for him to have the initials "FTW" to play on both ft willis/fuck the world but i think percy also works since it's a bit of a play on pencey prep. incredibly strained relationship with louise- very different personalities is a source of conflict between them. frances has the messiest uniform because he's the least put together, and has the most carefree attitude about things. hes really into being a problem but hes an unnaturally bright student when he actually gets into doing the work - taking a page from max fischers book here lmao. chipped nail polish. wears barrettes sometimes. very clever.

louise: i've always been enamored by that interview where gerard says that the band used "louise" as a nickname for mikey so i've associated it specifically with his glasses era. no last name for now but i think it has to have the same ou sound. primary inspiration for his character is max from rushmore. used to wear his hair slicked down until illi staged an intervention and forced him and frances to hang out one-on-one and style hair. neat uniform, but doesn't fit him properly for whatever reason. hand me down? transgenderism? he's just too tall? idk! connected with adults more than peers growing up and as a result is very under-socialized. involved with student leadership at the school.

ray: ughhhhh WHYYY did he have to write ray rules on the paper it would have been so fun to make a completely new name. okay anyways i just like graham and i think it suits whatever i have built for him. undiagnosed adhd and if anything a bit of a halfway point between illi and the rest of the group. illi is really intense and cannot be stopped sometimes so graham is kind of the "babygirl i was made to understand you vision" person. yeah im getting this from the hand on shoulder and sitting closer in that one scene but be nice to me im working with like. two minutes of footage as a launching point. uniform isn't buttoned, not because of carelessness, but forgetfulness. he's a little bit inconsistent about everything he does.

the school in general: rushmore style private school, kind of dying in recent years so funding and management is all over the place. mascot used to be the dogs or something but there were copyright issues with the logo and now they are the bears.

Some snippets into Donnie's relationship to his brothers in the Separated AU

So after having figured out that Donnie is in fact their Long Lost Brother, the Drax Trio obviously want him back, and while Donnie is initially excited to find out that he has a bunch of siblings, he's less excited to find out that they're a bit, uh, evil. And they keep insulting April!! How dare they!!! Not to mention, he already has a dad, he doesn't need a new one! So no, Donnie isn't planning on just leaving his current family behind for this new one, and his brothers react to this in various different ways.

As much as Mikey wants Donnie back, Dr. Feelings understands that this is quite the adjustment for Donnie and that he may need some time to come to terms with the fact that he actually belongs with them and not with the humans. Mikey doesn't wanna force his brother to reunite with them, so instead he tries to convince Donnie to come home willingly through various ways. I mentioned this in an earlier post, but AU Mikey is essentially trying to give Donnie a redemption arc like Canon Mikey did with Draxum

Raph, however, sees Donnie and immedietly goes full Protective Big Brother Mode. He thinks the best course of action is to "forcefully rescue" (kidnap) him and and then convince him to stay and be apart of their family. He's can't help catastrophizing about all the way his baby brother is definitely being mistreated by Lou Jitsu and April and all the other evil humans oh NO they have to SAVE HIM!! The only reason he doesn't is because no one else in the Draxum family thinks it's a good idea

And then Leo. I'll go more into detail about Leo's character in this AU at a later dat cuz hhhhhhh but basically, he's still dealing with pretty intense Middle Child Syndrome and the LAST thing he need is another middle child joining the family! Why are all his family members so obsessed with getting Donnie back anyway? He's already clearly chosen the human side so why waste their time on him! .....Now that's not entirely the whole truth, he's kinda ecstatic when he first meets Donnie, except Donnie doesn't seem to care about them any, which... ouch.

Another way to describe their dynamic would be similar to their canon dynamic, a lot of friendly bickering.... except they don't really know each other and are also enemies here so like.... UNfriendly bickering.... which is just bickering lol. They fight a lot, is what I'm getting at.

Anyway you know the family dinner scene with Draxum in season 2 of the show? Yeah, Mikey tries that tactic here too. Like I said, Mikey wants to be patient with Donnie, but he does eventually get a bit tired of Donnie acting so hostile all the time so he starts organizing hangouts for the four of them (attendence is mandatory!)

And poor Donnie, this whole situation is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for him, as you might imagine. Reuniting with your secret lost family is fun for all of five seconds before you find out that they're actually kinda messed up uh oh. A big reason why Donnie acts so hostile towards his brothers is because it's easier for him to just dismiss them as mere enemies that he feels no attatchment to. He's basically being made to pick between this new family and his old one is Not Fun.

Something I think is cute is that - y’know how Raph’s eyes are more on the yellow side?

Well, you know who also has slightly yellowed eyes? Donnie.

While Raph’s are more yellow, I think it’s cute that this is something that they share and I don’t see it pointed out too often?

It’s also something they both share with Draxum and Splinter’s current form (though again, these two have much more yellow sclera than the boys do.)

But yeah, I like that there’s this little detail that ties Raph and Donnie together, even if it’s small.

this was supposed to take place in the Joseon Dynasty, but when researching the type of hanbok people wore back then it was kinda hard finding accurate information 😭 so I just went with what I thought would suit them :]

some fun facts about this drawing under the cut! ^^

I hc that donnie would infiltrate the schools to become an astounding scholar, so when he comes home he teaches his brothers what he learned ^^ he's wearing a dopo (도포), which was what confucian scholars wore back then!

mikey's wearing a child's hanbok (한복), which are more colorful than adult ones. so technically speaking, leo and donnie should be wearing one too, but I felt that leo would want to copy don haha. plus, they all still see mikey as the baby of the group 😁

raph's wearing a gat (갓), and this is kinda where it was hard to find accurate info.. it's known that when someone wears a gat with their hair in a topknot, it signifies marriage, but other sources said that it also signifies when a child has transitioned into adulthood. either way, it represents pride, dignity, and status, so I figured I might as well add it.

and since this takes place in the Joseon period, I thought it'd be nice to have raph copying a page of the Hunmninjeongeum (혼민정음), which was a document introducing the invention of the early korean language ^^

though he likes his privacy, he does like pda. not intense pda, it's not like y'all have your tongues down each other's throats in public or anything, but he likes a lil kiss here n there. his arm around your waist, or your fingers intertwined with his. a kiss on your shoulder, and always one on your lips before you part. and while he doesn’t typically like to make a scene, when he misses you its a whole different story. he loves when you run to him when you see him after being away from each other for far too long, throwing your arms around his shoulders and his wrap around your waist to spin you around, peppering the side of your face with kisses as you tell him how much you missed him through giggles. he may come across as cold, but make no mistake, physical touch is his love language. he always finds himself gravitating to touching you, even in public. whether he's holding your hand or resting his head on your shoulder or tracing hearts and stars into the skin of your thigh, he just wants to touch you!!! in private, it is so much more egregious. he'll be on top of you, attacking you with kisses, hands roaming over your skin. he loves when you sleep over because then he can extend his time to cuddle with you. he likes little spoon and big spoon equally, he just wants SOMEONE to be held!!!

he has and will fight someone for you, absolutely no question. he doesn't exactly get jealous, you express how much you love him enough for him to have interalized it, but he does let a threat or two slip out when a man's flirting with you right in front of him. when someone is being creepy to you, yes, he has been known to throw a couple punches. he'll stop when you ask!! its not like he's batshit!!!! when he's finished, you tend to his wounds. muttering about how stupid he is but giving him a kiss to his temple.

he knows how obsessed you are with his hair. he watches you from the corner of his eye, staring lip tucked between your teeth as he puts it up. he complains, but he secretly loves it. "man you treat me like some slut" "true i'm just using you for your hair. one day you'll wake up bald and i'll be half way across the country with a ziploc bag full of your beautiful hair" "i hate you" he loves lying on top of you, cheek pressed against your chest as you run your fingers through your hair. he always ends up mumbling how much he loves you when your fingers find their way into his hair. he also lets you play around with different hairstyles too! his favourite will always be a half up half down moment :p

he calls you bro more than actual pet names tbh. generally, he doesn't use a lot of pet names because he'd rather call you by your name, but when he's being extra sweet or when he's tired, he'll use them. you love how cute he is when he's about to fall asleep, he starts going on and on about how much he loves his pretty girl. "soo sweet to me, love you soo much... my lovely girl... my love" he'll whisper into your neck, not even knowing exactly what he's saying himself as his eyes slowly flutter shut. when he's in a good mood he'll greet you with a lil "hey baby" or "hello perfect beautiful girlfriend" bc he's annoying like that 😞

he can ALWAYS tell when something is wrong. a clench of your jaw or a slight falter in your eyes, he immediately knows. he'll ask about it as soon as he picks up on it. he's surprisingly very good at comforting. he'll listen as long as you need him to, he'll give you a temple kiss, a gesture that quickly became a sign of love and understanding in your relationship. he'll kiss you on one, then the other, and add "to ease your mind." and you laugh because it's corny, and he rolls his eyes and claims he's never doing a nice thing for you again, but he grabs your hand to take you out to eat because he knows food is the best comfort.

your fingers gripped both of their shoulders, trying not to slip and fall on your face. "well things would go smoother if you let me carry him!" ian shushed him, a whine mumbling past your lips.

"throw up would be all over you mick," mickey scoffed, "you think i give a fuck? look at me, and tell me if you think there's any fucks i give." he didn't care if you threw up on him, worse substances have been all over him he could handle some puke.

"what i mean is i don't want him to throw up in general!—" ian stopped talking hearing you cough, the two trying to get you to the kitchen to get you some damn water.

"sorry.." you said, your body slouching down on the counter while your legs dangled off of it. "you're sorry?" ian came over to you, hands grabbing yours whilst mickey got some water and pills for when you were sober.

"what are you sorry for, hm?" it took a few hums, and choked words before you had gotten it out. "i..didn't mean to take it, it just.." they knew what happened. you weren't the type to drink, do drugs, or anything of the sort.

you just wanted to have fun, but in the end you got pressured into drinking more and more. way too much for a first timer on top of that.

"shh, don't apologize for that okay? we know." mickey handed you a glass with cold water, setting the pills beside you.

"hey, take these in the morning okay? you're gonna have one hell of a headache and it won't feel good." you nodded at his words, taking small sips of the water.

at least you knew if you drank too much that you would throw up, so you set it down. "im tired." they got you down, heading upstairs to get you to bed.

"here..alright, get him undressed and i'll get him some new clothes."

mickey lied you down getting your shirt off , the cold air making your body shiver. "mngh..mick? wactha doin'..?" mickey smiled a bit, the way you were so confused was just funny to him, though the situation wasn't something to smile about.

"ugh..you wanna have sex or something..?" mickey snorted, bursting out laughing shaking his head. "no— im tryna get you in some different clothes, not fuck you."

"his clothes off?" ian had come back, a different shirt in his hands and some long shorts that hopefully fit you all the way.

"yeah, give 'em." it took way longer to put the clothes on whether than it did to take the original ones off but they got you in bed without too much trouble.

"we'll be downstairs okay?" ian gave you a kiss on your forehead hand in your hair. "if you need anything just call us."

you nodded your head, saying goodnight to them as they turned off the light and shut the door.

“Y/N, go grab your hairbrush from the bathroom counter. Please, I can tell you didn’t brush your hair this morning,” Kakucho said, sitting down on the couch right beside you.

Ever since Mikey mentioned he prefers your hair long, you’ve been forced to grow it out. You can’t say you like it, but at least it hides the ugly marks they’ve left on your neck and body...

Everyone else just goes along with it—whatever Mikey says, goes. You’re not sure if the others actually like your hair as much as he does, but they definitely act like they do...

You got up and made your way to the main bathroom everyone used. As you spotted the black hairbrush and reached for it.

That was when it caught your eye.

A small orange bottle with a white childproof cap sat on the counter. Slowly, you picked it up, and it didn’t take long to realize—it was one of Sanzu’s many drugs. He must’ve left it behind in a rush this morning, hurrying to make it to his mission.

Bad day for him, but amazing for someone like yourself.

There is a good amount of pills in this container, and knowing Sanzu, only carrying around the ‘best’ (strongest) ones on him. He could drain this dry, and it still wouldn’t be enough for someone like him.

This would be enough to kill any normal person, especially someone clean for over a few years.

Slowly opening the cap, pouring the rest of the bottle into your hand. Then quickly raise all of it to your mouth, only to have a hand grip your wrist.

You don't need to turn to know who it is.

“I can’t even leave you alone for a minute before you do something dangerous. Put it down,” Kakucho said with a sigh. Physically, you know there’s no chance against him

You lowered your arm slightly to put the pills back in the bottle, and as you did, Kakucho’s grip gradually softened.

Once the cap is closed, you turn to look at him, feeling dazed.

“I won’t tell anyone… but if I catch you doing that again, I’m telling everyone,” he said, taking the pill bottle from you. You nodded, grabbed the brush, and the two of you walked back to the couch.

After settling down, he starts to brush your hair. “Honestly, what were you thinking? Did you just want to be on drugs or something, or was that a serious attempt?” he asks, sighing again.

“Listen, I know that you hate your life here. But is it truly that bad? You can have whatever you want. Having Kokonoi and Takeomi buy you anything you could dream of, Sanzu would literally do anything for you. Mocchi would always listen to your rants when you talked. Ran and Rindou, well, they argue a lot, but are fun to watch too. I try my best… even if you don’t see it…” His words are slow and cold.

“I admit I’m just as guilty as the rest of them, and everything we do is for your safety… even if you don’t think it is. That’s the truth. You may despise us for the rest of your life, but as long as we can keep you safe, that’s what matters.”

At this point, he seemed to be pouring his heart out.

Saddened, he asked, “Do you hate me…? For doing all of this?”

Shocked, you shook your head no. Kakucho did nothing wrong—he was just following orders. Even if he hurt you and others, he’s not to blame. You know he feels guilty for everything he’s done. After all, you’ve always felt a slight empathy toward Kakucho; he’s the kindest of all of Bonten.

“Will you please talk to me again?” he begged more than asked. You just shrugged, leaving it at that.

“Is life better now than when you first got here?” he asked. You replied with a simple nod.

“That’s good, at least. Although I can imagine the first few days felt like hell,” he said.

Try the first few weeks…

After asking a good handful of questions, he paused for a few seconds, as if he was thinking. Confused, you tilted your head and looked at him. Suddenly, it was like a lightbulb went off in his head.

“Would you be willing to respond with more specific answers if I have you write them down? That way, you wouldn’t have to speak,” he asked. You nodded. Then he rushed out of the room to grab something.

When he returned, he had an iPad in his hand. Pulling out the stylus, he handed it to you as he sat down on the couch. The iPad was already in drawing mode.

“Now… why don’t you talk?” he asked.

'I wanted to punish you all for everything you ever did to me. I thought that if you believed I was broken, maybe I could find a way to stop living like this. Even a peaceful death would’ve been ideal.'

As he was reading this, you could tell he was stunned, unsure of how to respond. He just asked another question: “How long are you going to keep this up?”

You write, ‘Until I can be free, or at least have some freedom’

“I can talk with Mikey…” You both know the conversation will be a waste of time for Kakucho and Mikey, but he can still try if he wants to.

'You’re a good person, Kakucho. Compared to everyone else, you have the most empathy. Plus, you only follow orders out of loyalty. I know you mean no harm to me, even if it’s for better or worse. Truthfully, if it were just you and me, I would talk to you,' you wrote down.

“What do you mean? We’re alone,” he said.

You wrote down just two words: security cameras.

After reading them, he said, “Oh, I forgot about that…” as he looked around the room, glancing at the cameras.

“I know you think we’re being excessive with everything, but you have to understand—we’re doing everything we can to protect you. We know everything about you… there are no secrets between us.”

He pauses, and it lingers longer than it should. He’s quiet… too quiet.

Shit. You have a bad feeling about this.

He sighs, deep in thought, then turns to you.

“Y/N… you know Bonten made a pact—no secrets, and to take care of you. And today… You tried to overdose on Sanzu’s drugs. That’s not a small secret I’d be keeping from them. This is your life. You could’ve died today if I hadn’t been there to stop you.”

He pauses, guilt heavy in his voice.

“I’m sorry, but I have to tell them. I care about you and your safety… and this is something I can’t keep from them.”

He looks down, ashamed.

Shit… you begin to think.

If he tells them, you’ll be on a tighter leash than ever. Things will go right back to how they were when they first took you.

There’s no way in hell you’re starting from the bottom again. You’ve worked your way up—first by playing nice, then by going silent, which they all hate.

If you’re thrown back to the bottom, it’ll take months before you can even walk freely around this building again.

You know what… fuck it. You’ve already told him too much. If you’re going out, you’re going out with a bang.

This is just… a lot to grasp.

You expected this kind of thing from Sanzu. From Ran. From Mochi. But Kakucho?

Kakucho is too loyal for his own fucking good.

Blinded by rage, you shoot to your feet and yell, “You’re just as fucked up as the rest of them!”

But the moment the words leave your mouth… something feels off. Your voice doesn’t even sound like yours—it's weak, strained, not nearly as loud as you wanted it to be.

Fuck…

You messed up your vocal cords.

You glance at Kakucho for a brief second—he’s taken aback. The sound of your voice shocked him… and it shocked you too.

All you want now is to leave and disappear into the bedroom.

However… as you turn, you see the rest of the Bonten members standing by the door, frozen in pure shock.

That’s all the information you need to know—they heard you.

Well, fuck…

A few moments of silence hang heavy in the air before you finally dare to move. You only manage a few steps when a voice breaks through.

“Hold on, Y/N. Come over here.”

Great. That was Mikey.

You're quick to make your way in front of him and the others, heart pounding.

“You talk to Kakucho, but not me?” he asks, his voice laced with hurt.

Should you dig yourself deeper into this mess?

“I’m sorry, Mikey…” you manage to whisper, your voice weak and hoarse. After yelling at Kakucho, your vocal cords are shot—it hurts to speak, and the others can tell. Some even flinch at the sound.

But it doesn’t matter. You could be in the worst pain imaginable, and as long as you’re alive and breathing, they’d be fine with that.

“So what? That’s all you have to say?” Ran scoffs. “We heard you talk. Drop the little tantrum and speak to us. I knew you’d break eventually… Took longer than I expected, but here we are.”

It’s clear—by the look on their faces—they all want to hear it again. Your voice.

Did this bitch not just hear me talk? What more does he want me to say? Is he really such a fucking sadist that he wants to hear me struggle to speak? You think, rage simmering beneath the exhaustion.

Well, in that case, you plan to say something to him—loud and clear.

“You know what? Fuck you, Ran. I’ve been wanting to say that for so long. You’re such a manipulative shit. You really think I didn’t see through all your bullshit—how you act like a god, like you’re so great. But you’re just a sadist who cheats and contributes nothing. It’s only because of your so-called ‘respect’—beating up kids younger than you—that you’re feared. Without that, you’d be nothing. You’d still be at the bottom of Roppongi, rotting in jail with all the other failures.”

You clutch your throat, trying not to breathe too hard.

“Calm down, Y/N. You know it’s just Ran being Ran.” You’re not sure if Rindou is sincere or just trying to shut you up. At this point, you don’t give a fuck—you’re already pissed.

“You think you’re any better, Rindou? The only reason people see you as nice is because they’re comparing you to Ran. Since I can remember, everyone’s been blinded by Ran, overlooking just how cruel and cold-hearted you really are.”

“You’re nothing but a follower, doing whatever Ran tells you, blindly trailing behind him. So much so that all you’ll ever be… is your big brother’s shadow.”

Your voice grows softer and softer.

Shit, you worry. How much longer can I keep talking?

“Your voice is getting worse, stop talking, Y/N,” Kokonoi says, concerned.

“You wanna be next?” you ask. “Because you—”

But you don’t even get to finish before a coughing fit takes over.

After catching your breath, you realize just how sore your throat is—burning and raw, the aftermath of overusing it. Every breath feels painful.

Your vision starts to blur, tears welling up without warning.

You have no idea why. Is it the pain? Or are you just suddenly overwhelmed by emotions?

Why do they all have to be here? Do they think you’re weak now?

What’s wrong with everything? How did it all end up like this?

You feel arms wrap around you. At first, you freeze—then you recognize it’s Kakucho.

Even when you curse at him, he’s still here, comforting you.

You can’t hate him. But you can’t love him, either. All you can do is accept him—and that’s exactly what you do, in that moment.

You exhale without even realizing you’d been holding your breath.

Your shoulders and body relax as you lean into his chest, unable to bear their cruel stares any longer.

No matter how hard you try, the tears won’t stop falling.

You can feel their eyes burning into your back.

“What are you all staring at? Acting like children watching a movie,” Akashi snaps, breaking the silence. “Y/N hasn’t shown any emotion for over a year, and now that they finally do, all you can do is just watch? They’re breaking down in Kakucho’s arms.”

Always count on Akashi to be an adult when situations become grim.

“We’ll all talk together on the couch,” Mikey says.

You hear his footsteps fade away, followed by the others.

Kakucho gently pushes you away from him.

“Ready to follow?” he whispers.

You nod slowly and make your way to the couch.

Everyone is already seated, and Mikey motions for you to sit between him and Akashi—the only two who can keep a calm mind, no matter what happens.

By now, you’ve stopped crying, but your eyes and nose remain red and swollen.

The moment you sit down, all hell breaks loose.

“I think that Y/N should get punished for talking to me like that,” “They are hurting enough, what they said was nothing, compared to what your victims say to you,” “And I kill them for it,” “Stop being such a big baby Ran, just man up,” “Oh I know you did not just tell me to ‘man up’, being the only one that doesn’t even get their hands dirty,” “Oh? Do you want your little allowance cut?” “I swear to God, Koko, if you-”

“Enough,” Mikey says, his voice firm.

Everyone falls silent—no one dares to disobey their leader.

Mikey then glances at Akashi, signaling something. Akashi turns to you.

Confused, you wait for him to speak.

“Y/N, I know you’re in pain,” Akashi begins carefully, “but what you said to Ran and Rindou was uncalled for—completely immature. You knew those were their weak points. You need to apologize to them.”

“I’m sorry… Rindou… Ran,” you say softly, eyes cast downward, your voice still scratchy.

“What was that? Hardly sincere—and he could at least speak loud enough for me to understand,” Ran complains.

Seeing Akashi shoot you a warning look, you let out a knowing sigh.

You look up at Ran, meeting his eyes with hatred. “I’m sorry… Ran,” you say louder, your voice rough with anger and strain.

Then, turning to his brother, you calm yourself and softly say, “Sorry,” with genuine sincerity.

Just as the older brother opens his mouth to respond, Akashi cuts him off with a sharp, “Ran.”

Ran rolls his eyes and leans back further on the couch.

“Now, Y/N…” Mikey’s voice cuts through the room, grabbing everyone’s attention.

“Do you—or Kakucho—want to explain what happened today? Especially what made you lose your temper like that?” he asks, his tone unusually curious. He hasn’t shown this much emotion in a long time, making everyone even more on edge.

You glance at Kakucho with a silent, pleading look, begging him not to say anything.

Kokonoi, always observant, notices immediately. “Oh? Must be nice, seeing you look at Kakucho like that…”

The moment Koko says this, all eyes snap to you.

Fuck… just great, you think.

Looking down, ignoring their stares, waiting for Kakucho to say something.

“Today, Y/N went to the bathroom to grab their hairbrush… but they were taking longer than usual. So I went to check on them,” Kakucho begins, hesitation creeping into his voice. “And when I looked in the room…” He pauses, clearly uncomfortable.

“Well, hurry up! What happened?” voices chime in. “It can’t be that bad… can it?” “Just spit it out already.”

Kakucho looks to Mikey, who responds softly, not demanding, but reassuring, even manipulative. He knows how to be gentle when he wants to.

Finally, Kakucho pulls out a pill bottle and tosses it to Sanzu, who fumbles—only for Akashi to catch it.

“I found them about to take the rest of the pills in the bottle,” Kakucho says at last.

Sanzu pales, realizing he’s in deep trouble.

Everyone’s eyes lock onto Sanzu, glaring like they’re ready to tear him apart. I wouldn’t be against that, you think.

“The rest of these, you say, Kakucho? Sanzu… just five at once could’ve killed them,” Akashi says coldly, staring down Sanzu. Then his gaze shifts back to you as he continues,

“Almost got Y/N killed… But then again… who knew?”

”They would be so suicidal,”

About 10 days ago I had the idea to host a DTIYS and even though I told myself it wouldn't happen anytime soon.. the idea struck and it wouldn't let me go. SO, here it is! One thing before everything else:

I am aware that this is a rather challenging DTIYS but it was done so intentionally by me. (Trust me, I tortured myself too 🙃) HOWEVER. you are allowed to chose to draw only one segment of the whole piece and not every single one! You will however get more points for including all 3 parts of it. I will judge the pieces based on: • How many segments of the whole piece were drawn • Creativity (in what way was it changed from the original to emphasize your own style for example) • Colors (did you chose to use colors or is it black and white?) • Hands. I do accept written entries for this as well! I love reading and I don't want to exclude writers for this one should they decide they want to tackle this! You are allowed to use my art up top of the DTIYS to promote your writing!

Mikey's mindscape in Golden Future:

In the beginning he thought it was black water but it's actually black sand

He can dive into the sand and uncover "treasures" (parts of his mystic energy)

Diving down means no vision, sound or air gets through to him

He can uncover the mystic powers by pulling them up with his chains

Uncovering a "treasure" will turn that part of the desert golden
