this is a slip jackson appreciation post because genuinely, having a CANONICALLY trans character with a higher voice and shorter stature be a character that is both integral to the story and is described as more dominant and forceful rather than an "uwu baby must protect" character is really important to me personally

EVEN WITH the (already deeply appreciated) confirmation of slip's identity, kabert got a TRANSMASC ACTOR to play him, and his role within the story subverts what a lot of the FEW transmasc characters in media do. not to mention he dated a cis, gay man, and was (as explained in the commentaries) the more dominant one in the relationship.

even within the trans community broadly, it's easy to feel like pre-t trans men are treated like confused butch lesbians or cute aesthetic babies. hell, I'd know. but to have a pre-t transmasc teenager in one of my favorite audio dramas? in a time like this, as a pre-t transmasc teenager myself? it's amazing.

This is just how gender works for everyone, including cis humans in real life. Everything is vibes and gender is a social construct.

Doesn’t really conflict with the idea that he’s Transmasc - being Trans is just deciding you’d rather have a different role in the play of life. You want a different performance, a different costume than the one you were assigned, and your understanding of the roles around you is nigh completely informed by observing the actors around you. It’s why the dominant ideals of femininity and masculinity will look different if you’re in the USA, in Botswana, in Mongolia, in Japan, in Russia, in Italy, in Kenya. It’s why it’ll change so drastically even within a single country depending on time period.

Caliborn being Transmasc is canon, and his performance of masculinity being alien to his own species kinda falls in line with a kind of Trans narrative. Frankly, Trans understandings of gender do tend to be quite foreign to their Cis peers, even if what they’re saying truly isn’t rocket science. A lot of Cis people aren’t even aware of the concept of Butch Lesbians.

the thing about watching these trashy cop shows and medical dramas, as i do, is that casting directors always pick people who look "creepy" to them to be like, serial killers or Obvious Abusers

except that to them like. "creepy" just means people who are effete, queer, or clocky

and i really love lori petty, but she's almost always put into either super hypersexualised roles and/or lesbian roles that are all about like. how Weird and Gross she is when it's just that casting directors rely HUGELY on cues for stuff like gender nonconformity

and so they're like "Oh this woman is capital W Weird (meaning we think she does gender Wrong, whether that means she's a lesbian or transmasc or just clocky in some other way)" and rely on people's bigotry to inform response to the character

james spader gets it all the time, bc he's got OCD and ppl can tell to look at him bc of how he moves and holds his hands and his body - bc there's a delicacy to him, str8 ppl will read him as a bit fruity, at least in comparison to other cis men

to the point that apart from often being cast in very sexy bisexual roles, he's even played a trans man now! (good for him i love james spader this is NOT a critique)

and similarly watching these shows they'll put a guy who is honestly just, to me, a fucking milquetoast white guy - BUT. he is JUST gender nonconforming enough or JUST is like. clocky enough as queer or trans or otherwise being "off" what str8 people want and expect

and they'd never be able to put their fingers on what it is. they'd say "oh you know, he's just a little creepy / weird / off" etc, it's often not just neurodivergence, it's like, facial structure, the movements of the face, the voice, etc. maybe some of it is intersex stuff

but it's the same stuff that to me would be like "hm, maybe he's one of us, maybe he's an SA victim, etc", but i wouldn't know that unless i talked to them more? they're POTENTIAL clues. whereas cishets will be like, oh, this means this person is Evil. then... casting directors

Another thing about the episode I wanted to talk about— don’t get me wrong, I’m really glad to see a trans male Imp finally get a speaking role (even if I doubt Vivzie went to the lengths to get him a transman voice actor or even a memorable name), but that begs the question: What the hell was the reason for making Millie’s brother cis??? Why even redesign the character if he barely even showed up? Like, what’s her play here?

Could she not have “too many” trans characters in the family of an “important” character, despite this supposedly being an openly queer show? Did she only want one trans sibling initially and just chose the one that she liked more? Was it because she wouldn’t be able to use him for fetish material like she could Sallie? Even though he had no lines and was only on screen for a total of five-ish seconds, was she afraid of him taking away the spotlight from Sallie?????

I love to see more diversity in characters, but I really can’t feel all that great about it when we could have had that diversity in earlier episodes, but for reasons that are still beyond me, we lost it.

I'm absolutely fuming about the trans male imp.

Now, I could talk about how she made him less conventionally attractive than Millie's previously transmasc brother who she made cis. Don't get me wrong, I think he's adorable (ask me about the guy I made out with at pride who this imp reminds me of, it's a pretty funny story), but he is, he's less conventionally attractive. He's got a snaggle fang and a couple of Shaggy beard hairs; he's wearing a "Voxflix and chill" fuckboy tank. Obviously not all trans characters need to be sex icons, but Sallie Mae of one speaking line fame is a tall bombshell with loads and loads of sexy merch.

I could also talk about how much less likable he is than Sallie Mae, who from the get-go is presented as confident, competent, beloved by her family. All we know about nameless trans guy imp is that he likes to party. Blitzo calls him an asshole.

But if you want proof? I mean, outside of the logs where Vivzie talks disdainfully about trans men? Just look at their voice actors.

Sallie's voiced by an actual trans woman. If imp guy is voiced by a trans man, he's not listed in the credits. Pretty sure he's just Edward Bosco.

She's not even hiding it at this point. People just don't care.

Backstory

Silas is a Hollywood nepo baby. His parents were actors; his mom was the leading lady in just about every historical biopic of the last forty years, and his dad was her co-star in Princess Cordelia's Revenge. They split up after a brief fling-turned-Vegas-wedding and a long, contentious divorce, leaving Silas as a budding child actor firmly under his mom's thumb.

If you were a 90s kid in SimNation, you probably have fond memories of Silas... because he was the star of "Eureka Castle, Girl Detective", an incredibly popular show that ran on the Simsney Channel in the 2000s. To this day, he still gets fan mail for Eureka Castle; to this day, he ignores it. Eureka Castle is its most prominent acting credit by far; even after a gender transition, an age transition, and an acting resume studded with roles like "serial killer" and "hooker #5", the role haunts him to this day.

Silas has just wrapped up its last season on The Urbz (where it plays a side character in Neon East), and while it looks for other work, it's decided to give this reality TV thing a try. After all, it's gotta keep its Actors Guild membership and its insurance.

Personality

Silas is the kind of guy who could ONLY thrive in Hollywood. He's got a Bad reputation for a reason- he's bitchy, demanding, only wants to work with The Best, and sees this whole LOVERS ROCK gig as beneath him. But again-- Guild membership!

He's never interacted with Riot in a professional capacity, but has probably started beef with her on Twitter. About something very stupid. Probably doesn't remember it was her, probably doesn't care.

Silas' actual greatest wish is to genuinely become a world-famous detective. But he's... pretty sure those don't actually exist. Being a detective in the real world means becoming a cop and having other people tell you what to do all day, and if you want to do your job right, no one can know you exist. He doesn't want to be in a police procedural; he wants to be Benoit Blanc.

*(His surname in the gallery is 'Spede', because ??? Maxis wyd??? But it's Spade, like Sam Spade.)

Hello. I was wondering if I could get a Baldurs Gate 3 match up?

Specifically with one of the men I am a gay transmasc man(only pronouns I don't use are she/her). I generally have a more masc style but even though I identify as trans masc I don't bind that often. I hate wearing dresses though. Like I hate them with a passion. I have autism, adhd, anxiety, and depression. I often love infodumping to close family and friends. I love cats and have 4 of them(they are all my babies). I love listening to those around me talk about their interests, and I, in turn, love to share my own interests. I am easily overstimulated, though, and can shut down equally as easily. I enjoy doing what's called parallel play where I and another person, we each do our own thing but still enjoy each other's company. I love singing and can play multiple instruments, including cello and piano. I get easily embarrassed when singing around those close to me, though. I am hypersensitive to most touch, sound, and smells. I'm currently unemployed due to my mental health issues but I one day would like to be a veterinarian technician. I am easily distracted and have a really bad memory(it's my adhd)

It’s almost fitting how well you and Rolan end up complementing one another.

Your love is kindled quietly at first, especially if it’s back at the Grove or the inn. Rolan’s dealing with personal struggles himself around that time especially in concern with his life and the lives of his family. And he’s certainly not blind to your own struggles either - catches glimpses of the days where even you are overwhelmed by the hands fate deals you. And yet you always keep moving forward, overcoming each day even when it feels as though the weight of the world upon your shoulders could suffocate. He’d be a fool not to realize that his feelings for you go far beyond mere respect.

PLEASE listen to this guy talk; he could talk for Faerun about his interests and pursuits if you’ll allow him the chance to. Of course Cal and Lia put up with his ramblings, and have for years - but they’re his siblings so every conversation is full of teasing grins and the ‘here he goes again’ to playfully remind him when he may have been getting carried away. It’s different with you. You’ve always been a willing ear, even when he’s admittedly been at his worst; providing a welcome confidant who seems to actually listen. He often teasingly bemoans that it took so long to finally find someone who appreciates his knowledge, a perfect actor of the furrowed brow and mock dismayed sigh that will have you grinning and rolling your eyes every time. But in all seriousness, Rolan deeply appreciates that you’re willing to indulge him in his thoughts and interests, a fact he often chides himself for not telling you more often.

Given how often you allow him to ramble it’s only fair that Rolan allows you the same - is what he says, but we both know damn well that he could listen to you talk about how paint dries and sit through the entire thing if that’s what interests you. He’s content to listen to you explain your current interests to him while he works and reorganizes - you’ll realize quickly he’s not one for sitting still for overlong if there’s something to keep his hands busy. Rest assured that Rolan’s always listening to you though, as any time you trail off or pause he’ll stop what he’s doing to encourage you to continue. Can never stop himself from adding to the conversation in some way - it’s a bad habit since he can never get the timing right and sometimes butts right in mid conversation, but the guy’s got his heart in the right place. Rolan’s the kind of partner that wants you to feel like he really appreciates the stuff that you appreciate, which he does by learning about them precisely so he can talk to you about them. It’s a sweet gesture, especially if your interests end up leading him down the proverbial rabbit hole of information he previously had no idea about.

Listen, Rolan is basically one big cat himself - you have to earn his trust and others may think he comes off too prickly and closed off. But once they love you? That’s it, it’s for life. So once your cats get used to having him around, they will absolutely love him. Well, more specifically the cats LOVE his tail. The poor tielfing’s tail is literally a walking cat toy, and it really doesn’t help that he rarely keeps it still idly swaying it from side to side as he goes about his day. You’re going to have to get used to hearing a familiar shout of surprise somewhere in the house followed by Rolan coming to find you with the offending cat in tow, cradled in his arms like a petulant fluffy child. Since you’re the cat-parent he seems to think you’ll somehow be able to convince your cats to give him some reprieve - a nice thought, but you both know that will never happen.

He’ll give you your space when you’re feeling overstimulated. Rolan understands probably better than most that the worst thing to do when it all becomes too much is to be surrounded by things and people that will only exacerbate the situation. He only hopes that you’ll come to him once you’ve taken the time to ground yourself, to see that you’re doing alright or to let him know if there’s anything else that you require. After taking over Ramazith’s tower there’s not a single room in the place off limits to you. Just pick a room and it’s yours for whatever you please; and if you need a place of comfort to hide yourself away without the worry of being disturbed this man will bend the place backwards to accommodate that for you. In his eyes it’s the very least that he can do to provide you a fraction of the comfort and security that you give him.

Rolan’s the kind of partner that would benefit the most from parallel play, especially with his tendency to keep himself occupied. To exist in the same place as the one you care for, doing separate things whilst also enjoying one another’s company? Rolan can think of nothing better, especially on the days when he’d just like to unwind and do his own thing in your company. If you’re comfortable with the touch and you’re each doing your own thing within close proximity he’ll drape his tail across your lap or around your hip, giving the occasional brush to your side like an unspoken appreciation for your presence in these little stolen moments. 

Rolan’s not going to push you to perform or sing in front of any audience, including his own if you express your discomfort at the prospect; he respects your privacy and will always give you space to indulge in your musical pursuits away from prying eyes. On that note though he’s got excellent hearing, so he’s been privy to catching the tail end of some of your practices without strictly meaning to. More than once he’ll idle himself nearby the room where you’re performing, enraptured momentarily by the beautiful sounds you create through your voice or the gentle thrum of your instruments. It’s no wonder he’s enraptured, so much so that he’s had to catch himself and scramble to make himself look as though he hadn’t spent the past few minutes listening to your music more than a few times once you’ve stopped performing. 

If you do decide to ever perform around Rolan though, especially in his presence he gets uncharacteristically quiet, listening to you sing or play with a reverent silence you wouldn’t expect from the usually snarky tiefling. Hell if you knew it only took this to render him speechless you may have done it sooner - just don’t tell him that though or he’ll go dark red right up to his ears. Rolan will absolutely boast about your musical prowess to anyone who’s around to hear.  He wants everyone to know just how talented and skilled his wonderful partner is, enough that his siblings will probably start begging you to reign him in..

Rolan is absolutely a help with your bad memory and tendency to get distracted; this guys had experience. I mean, look at his relationship with his siblings - trust me, all of them have got keeping you focused in the bag. Most of the time. Rolan is always there to remind you of important things you’ve forgotten - remembering important dates, reminding you where you last put down something that you’ve misplaced; he’s a lifesaver in a pinch and saves you a lot of headache trying to wrack your brain over these things. Granted he will sometimes joke in good fun about how he can add personal calendar and tracker to his expansive repertoire, and sigh about the things that he does for love. But a quick kiss or the soft brush of a hand against his cheek abruptly nips that teasing in the bud, and you’ll have him on the forgetful side as he leans into your touch.

okay so hamlet right, shakespeare play, there was a 2015 fifteen production of it with maxine peake playing hamlet which is cool because WOMAN ACTOR PLAYING HAMLET!!! and you can read this purple as 'hamlet is a man being played by a woman actor, but within the play he's a man', or 'hamlet is a he/him butch', or 'hamlet is transmasc' even, which is all really really cool, and the way she plays him is a lot.. angrier? than other versions, like she really leans into hamlet as a young man angry at his position in his family & the world around him. they also cast polonious (who's like a slightly irritating father/advisor) as a woman and changed her gender within the play which is perfect because polonious was born to be someones bitchy overbearing mother hehe. anyways so i'm watching this play and the video quality is. not amazing but its watchabe but The Site. After outing themself in the course of protecting a fellow student, Sid ends up inadvertently joining NRC’s student body on a more permanent basis (thanks to Crowley’s “infinite generosity”, and him overlooking their gender in favor of pocketing another mage on the path to Overblot). They officially join Octavinelle dorm, and work part time at the Mostro lounge. Their biggest dream is to follow in Elizabeth’s footsteps and become the Pirate King, after reading about her in an old family journal, and being told stories about her from their maternal grandmother. They manage, somehow, to become a member of Copper’s crew aboard the newly-resurfaced Black Pearl, but this is only the first step on their journey towards their dream. (Easily the most developed of my student characters)

His manager’s name is Louie Kincaid, and he’s somehow even more scummy than the agent in Bolt.

Endgame at the moment is Silver, though admittedly I haven’t done as much to develop that as I’d like to and it’s pretty up in the air right now.

His family historically works in the sanitation industry, a fact which his father and elder brother are deeply proud of. Marcel, however, has loftier dreams. He wants to eventually become the head chef of his own restaurant in Fleur City. He is extremely skilled at balancing flavors and mastering difficult cooking techniques, but his prejudice and stubbornness get in the way of his progress. Marcel tends to disregard food from cultures outside of Fleur City as “less than”, and has a lot to learn when it comes to expanding his horizons. His rivalries with Ruggie and Jamil might just finally put him on the right track— both with cooking, and with people.

Sentient/Sapient/Self-aware AI as the result of a magic accident coinciding with a power fluctuation. Can cast magic as a result of the accident/her bond with her creator, but there’s something Off about it.

Signature Spell: Glitch in the Matrix (I have a vague idea of what this does, but it’s hard to explain)

Ali was originally one of the main characters in a VR blastcycle racing game that was in development called “Sweet Tracks”. Her creator had a deep love for her, and put more work into her character’s AI than was common or necessary. Before the accident that created her, Ali had a similar level of autonomy and awareness to Mira, Vil’s chat assistant. But thanks to a power fluctuation, a strong discharge of magic (possibly healing/light magic? Or maybe the use of her creator’s signature spell to try and protect Ali’s code?), and her creator’s strong love for her, Ali became as aware, feeling, and free-thinking as any human. What she wants most is a real body, like Ortho’s, and to become a real life blastcycle racer, and she and her creator will do damn near anything to see that goal accomplished. Her creator finds out about Idia and Ortho on the net, possibly from Azul selling Ortho’s old parts secondhand, and they resolve to track down the tech prodigy and secure his help, one way or another.

Dirk Hawkins

Dirk’s father, Seymour Hawkins, (Cutler Beckett expy) is the head of a large shipping company that Dirk’s older brother, Irving (Ian Mercer expy) is set to inherit. Seymour Hawkins is an absolutely cutthroat businessman, hungry for money and power in equal measure, and who takes notice of tales that most modern men consider to be no more than myths and hearsay. When he hears whispers that the captain of the legendary Flying Dutchman is seeking out a successor, it’s not something such a man could ignore. He sends Dirk, his youngest son, to become that successor by any means necessary.

Dirk himself is one of my favorite OCs, if not my favorite altogether. He’s initially more insecure than he’d ever admit, his entire self-image wrapped up in his complicated and unhealthy relationship with his extremely demanding and controlling father. He and Sid first meet when they’re both investigating rumors of the Dutchman’s captain, though for very different reasons.

Over the course of this, Dirk and Sid form a complicated rivalry/friendship, relating to each others’ struggles with their parents and their desire for freedom. When Sid is chosen to be the Dutchman’s successor, they take Dirk on as their first mate.

Cassiopeia “Cass” Hawkins

The result of a one-night stand Dirk had long before joining the crew of the Dutchman, discovered when the Dutchman made port to resupply. Cass is about right when Dirk first meets them, and is around the same age as @cyanide-latte’s Talesin.

They’ve got a lot of grumpy in a small body.

Cass has a focus in cosmic magic and a strong association with stars.

It feels weird to not have a cast shout out to do today so I think I'll give you a little teaser of some bonus content instead! This, of course, means I need to talk about @louis-dc who is going to be voicing one of our gods in a mini series taking place between story arcs. I had an idea that I shared with Louis and he was so supportive of it from the jump. I can't tell you who the other players in this story will be, but I *can* tell you that Louis will be playing a transmasc Athena and that he's going to be absolutely amazing at it

Louis is one of the most supportive people in this space and is a brilliant director, voice actor, and collaborator. I'm so lucky to be able to work with him!

well. okay so.

first of all to get it out of the way - i think ai voice shit is morally abhorrent unless the actor themselves gives consent. even then i have concerns because this can be used for extremely damaging and dangerous things. so.. mods that give him a higher pitched, feminine voice? despise. burn it all to the ground. i feel so furious over shit like this i can't even debate it

mods that change gale to look more feminine.. well. this honestly ties into the genderbend debate. how do i feel about genderbending a character in a way that completely changes their body? if gale took estrogen he wouldn't suddenly have what people would call a 'womans frame' - like those mods do. so instead the mods that turn gale into a woman are turning him into a ciswoman. if you want transfem gale just make him transfem without actually changing him. headcanon that the characters do his makeup and he got some iddy bitty titties. yknow. that is unless you put magic in the picture - as far as i know there is only two cases of this happening and it involves gods. the first one was mystra forcibly changing elminster into a woman without his consent, the other is the changedance, done by eilistraee female and male priests, where they undergo a ritual to temporarily change themselves into the opposite sex - but it was never permanent.

it's also a little difficult because my transmasc gale headcanon is very dear to me, to the point i cannot separate gale from it. i know people who have many gender headcanons for gale from transfem to nonbinary - wizards are inherently very fun to play with when it comes to gender. personally i feel dysphoric when i see gale looking like a woman.

at the end of the day what someone does in their single player game isn't any of my business, and i am working on judging people for what they do - beyond laughing at screenshots i funny. if you wanna mod gale into a woman with an ai high pitched voice.. it's none of my business. but if i see it on my dash i will probably block you for my own comfort.

also - please don't send me asks in the future about ftm or mft - i find these terms to be offensive, personally.

Dear lord, Erin is energetic. Like, really really energetic.

It's a mischevious individual that will cause chaos anywhere Erin went. Maybe it will appear right behind you without any notice, maybe he will doodle random things on the school walls. Maybe he will prank you by a suprise box. Any harmless pranks you could think, Erin would make it come true.
