In your opinion, what's the darkest thing in Poptropica?

Oh... wow. You know, some people might be surprised at some of the dark stuff that's happened/implied throughout the franchise. And from such an innocent looking world too :)

I guess I'll make a list of some stuff that stands out to me:

24 Carrot Island 

The 4 children were kidnapped and brainwashed by Dr. Hare probably for months.

Astro-Knights Island 

Mordred almost died in a crash, and had to replace half of his body with robotics. 

Mordred kidnapped the princess because he wanted to marry her. And her parents most likely thought they were never going to see her again, since they had no way of going after her.

Counterfeit Island 

It's implied that Black Widow was gonna torture the player in order to get answers. 

Reality TV Island/Wild Safari Island 

Villains allowed to be on reality tv… and being treated as celebrities... WHAT.

Skullduggery Island 

Captain Crawfish probably killed a lot of people. Cause… pirate.

Steamworks Island 

The entire backstory of this island: the people were doing experiments on plants, when the plants mutated and tried to kill them. The only way they could survive is by freezing themselves.

Captain Ziggs sacrificed himself to hold off the Plant Monsters. Mayor Crumb must be feeling pretty depressed now that she's free and forced to live without him.

Red Dragon Island  

The Shogun being a pretty terrifying tyrant. 

Shrink Ray Island  

POV: you're an elementary school student and your teacher's star pupil. You trust him, because he's a nice teacher. And then he goes crazy and kidnaps you.

Mr. Silva threatens to shrink CJ and the player to the point where they can't be seen by anyone, which is kinda dark honestly. 

Blimp Adventure 

Dr. Cumulo Nimbus sets fire to the rain to all the islands. 

Game Show Island  

Robots take over and enslave humanity. 

Ghost Story Island  

A really depressing murder mystery/ weird love triangle story that involves several character's deaths.

S.O.S Island  

The ship sinks and everyone inside almost dies. Also a child.

Vampire's Curse Island  

Count Bram outlives his wife, and goes crazy. And he kidnaps a child due to insanity. 

Cactus von Garlic has killed many vampires. But not all vampires in Poptropica are evil (if Haunted House is any indication). 

Twisted Thicket Island  

The forest creatures turning into stone. I'm not 100% sure if they're still alive in there or not...

Poptropolis Games Island

The island sinks back into the ocean, with people still on it. Some of the ancient islanders are waterlogged (but still alive, for some reason).

Lunar Colony Island (Book)

The PASE workers are oddly sociopathic to Glen John's situation, only caring about Glen helping them. Glen is 13 btw.

Super Villain Island  

Zeus almost winning. He blew up the world for no reason. Also, there's something really scary about the way he blew up his own island.

Zomberry Island  

Zombie apocalypse. 

Virus Hunter Island  

A pandemic almost happened. 

Monster Carnival Island 

Ringmaster Raven's backstory: Pretty messed up. 

Edgar is an orphan who ran away and joined the carnival. He put a lot of trust in the Ringmaster and seemed pretty happy… and then the Ringmaster hypnotizes him and uses him for his scheme. Pretty messed up. 

Survival Island 

Myron Van Buren. Enough said.

Mission Atlantis Island 

The alien was trapped underwater for years and died.

PoptropiCon Island  

Omegon taking over the convention center, and turning the people into Hench-Bots.

Arabian Nights Island 

Scheherazade attempted to steal the player's soul… what the heck.

Graphic Novels

The kids almost died… several times. (A Saber tooth tiger and polar bear almost maul them, they almost fall to their deaths, they almost freeze to death, they are almost stabbed to death by Lieutenant Rogers, they almost got erased from history on the Ancient Egypt Island, they almost burned alive in a volcano eruption, etc)

The ancient Egyptians are erased from one timeline, and a bunch of people on earth died... and it's unknown if they were brought back, or what.

When Spencer Albright is murdered, Jonas is so overcome with grief that he completely loses it and becomes murderous like Octavian. Jonas is 18-20 btw.

The backstories for the main characters (Octavian is forced to let Paulla die, Mya's mom abruptly dies and she goes through depression, Oliver’s dad walks out on the family).

Octavian's fate at the end is this: he accidentally jumped through the portal before the universe he wanted to go to fully formed. Because of this, he jumped into the in-between point of universes, and was split into an infinite amount of versions of himself. Sounds complicated, but is incredibly messed up.

Mya was seriously considering leaving her own timeline, even though she would be leaving her family and friends behind. Whether or not she knew this is unknown, but if she did... kinda messed up.

And… that's it. No more dark things that stick out to me after that. Probably because after this, they fired the writer who was responsible for most of the dark undertones in the franchise. OOPS!!! >:(

I think the darkest stuff comes from Monster Carnival, Survival, and the graphic novels.

Finally decided to be brave and post some work from the WIP of @zombie-eats-world's fic Lost Like a Fox

( if you follow any of my work on @chimeraacademy-comic you know that I tend to finish pages with just background/scene setting before anything else haaaaaa HELP )

I'm gonna rant about this under the cut!

Here be spoilers for Lost Like a Fox! I'm gonna assume you've read the original fic!

Funny story, I've had this fic rotating in my head for almost a year now-- but I only read the rest of the series recently. But.

By then I had already constructed an entire AU of this AU. So. It's different, but not that different and frankly for Lost Like a Fox? The only difference for the audience is going to be Sanji's motivations.

He is A LOT hornier than I think the original authorial intent.

I got the impression in the original that Sanji's trying to arrange a 'meet cute' here in his own messed up way. So I'm taking that and turning it up to 11. Of course, Zoro's . . . Zoroness keep throwing small wrenches into his plans.

His motivations in my comic are similar enough to the original I don't think it matters unless I start doing other stuff with this AU. It's just the mechanics work a little differently.

Which I'm gonna assume that you wanna hear so you've read this far!

Okay so! Dragon is the King of Hell in this one-- Crocodad is still Crocodad, because I genuinely like that premise. And human. I'm still hedging on whether Crocodad raised ASL or not, because I know they're in the AU ( they are who Luffy is taking his weekend trip with instead of Law, like the original )

Why the change?

Because Luffy's dream is to be the King of Hell. Nobody, his entire life, has known wtf this kid is talking about. Ace and Sabo KINDA get it, because they know that Luffy's Different and they keep a pretty good wrap on just HOW different. *insert that gif from the Omen of the nanny in the window*

Anyway, long story short he's gotta defeat the Demonic Warlords to achieve that dream~ In my AU there are no Emperors, which I know sucks, but I'm using this story as practice for 'killing your darlings' and general storycraft. We'll see how far I take it?

1. Seanan McGuire (21 books) Seanan McGuire is an amazing writer and one of the hardest things to do is put down one of her books once you start, it's always a captivating adventure to read one of her books

2. Kay Hooper (16 books) I'm not done with her Bishop/Special Crimes Unit books but oh my gosh, she writes good. If i had to give a short and sweet summary of what she writes, it would come off as a trashy genre. But she writes possibly my favorite romances I have ever read. Once a Thief and Always a Thief are my favorite romace books of all time, and the reason I read them was because of a ML fanfic called Once a thief Always a Thief by, I believe, Saijispellhart, I think that's right, if you read that fic and liked it then you will love Kay Hooper

3. CJ Cherryh (12) this is possibly my favorite writer of science fiction full stop and i can't even get into it here because i would talk for ages, the message here is to read CJ Cherryh's books, for the love of Goddess read them

4. Jimmy Gownley (8 books) Amelia Rules is my favorite comic of all time with a close secomd being the planet Sakaar arc in the hulk comics

5. Diana Rowland (7 books) people just love her white trash zombie books, and foe good reason, but personally i loved her Mark/Blood of the Demon books a whole lot more

6. Victoria Laurie (7 books) i loved the first book in her ghost hunter mystery books, then 2 and 3 were a slog, and then the rest were good again, not sure what happened to the second and third book

7. Marrion Zimmer Bradley (7 books) ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew what the fuck is up with her ew ew ew ew ew ew this is what passed for feminist writing back then?! I've read incel rants with more respect for women than some of the stuff she writes!

Anyway she's an ok science fiction writer with a way of writing really engaging stories with a strong narrative voice, don't read her books, they really are not kind to women

8. Michelle Tea (5 books) go read mermaid in chelsea creek, go do it, right now, this is a demand, read mermaid in chelsea creek, cry about it and then come back to me and tell me what you thought about it, do it now

My favorite book from her is Valencia btw, an excellent memoir

9. Kim Harrison (4 books) don't ask me anything about her books, i could not tell you, i know what happened because i read them but the memories are jumbled up with details from the October Day novels

10. Stephen king (4 books) Stephen King is, ehhhh, i read him more for the status that he was a prolific writer and had a lot of popular books, the first one i read, which is still my favorite by the way, is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

Just read your posts about the new SL ragnarok manhwa and, honestly i think this is a discerivce to the novel since all of the aspects that you have ranted about are not as present in there as they are in the manhwa.

For example you said suho isnt like what jinwoo was on the first chapters. And you are right, Suho in the Ln didnt fight the possesed hunters but rather he had to rescue civilians while dealing with possed unawakened people who acted like zombies. They were many but they were far far weaker, and even there he didnt fully succed in helping everyone since time wasnt on his side at all. His fight there even ended with him being almost killed by a wolf until Beru swooped in to save him. And the rest of the chapters as well, Suhos less of a prodogy and more of a tactiful guy trying to get out of insanely dangerous situations. In a sense he is weak but instead of rapidly getting stronger, he gets more creative with the way he is going to win his fights.

Also Suhos backstory in the novel wasnt... supposed to appear until much later. In the first chapters his personality is meaner (tho still funny) because he just got word that his parents are in fact alive and from then on his only focus is getting strong. Its not until some chapters later (due to two events that I wont spoil) that Suho's own turmoil about the loss of his parents is shown and how that affected his personality as well as the relationship with the rest of his family.

(btw when i say long i really mean that most of these is supposed to appear 100 chapters later, and I mean I get showing it now would be good too. BUT THEY DIDNT! THEY DIDNT PUT ANY EFFORT IN SHOWING IT! They just brough in some points with NONE of the weight and context that the light novel had set upon and decided to COMPLETELY CHANGE other things as well!! I could go on a rant of the changes the horrible pay offs but look at this wall of text, its big enough as it is.)

As for the telling and showing, they could have done so SO well with the showing seeing that daul takes a lot of time to extend his characters (like a lot lot), helping to show their personalities through actions could have crammmed in more of an impact to the relationships in SL ragnarok as well, the best example i can get right now is how they executed Dogyun and Suho's interaction, even with some changes thrown, and others cut, the scene was nice because 1)faithful to the story and their characters (in this case dogyuns own problems that werent shown in the manhwa but were in the ln) 2)we got to see the panels of Dogyun hesitating, him deducting about the fight, the extra scenes where hes not trying to leave suho behind. i think these scene was adapted well. I could say the same for the fight with the goblins where it did show new scenes but still relied on suho being his tactiful self like in the novel.

Oh boi did i need to get this out from my chest. and I hope i didnt come of as mean in any of this, im mostly just frustated at the adaptation (even if i still love it) its just that i was having so many expectations considering how the light novel was on its focus of characters, and yeah i can get 'oh this is what happens to all adaptations' and 'they are taking creative liberties because its hard to adapt a book to a webnovel' but one thing is 'I will change the fight to make it cooler or leave out introspective dialogue of the characters bc you cant fit it in the manhwa in any form' and another is 'I will actively change two of the most important key points of the story, kill a character that is very crucial to the next arcs, give the characters op skills that arent supposed to appear until FAAAR later, and decide to make him op by himself instead of relying on those around him and on other external factors because the whole point of Suho is that he ISNT solo leveling, he isnt walking this path alone and--- considering his affection to help others even during very difficult desicions where he could just grab all the op stuff for himself but no--- he doesnt walk this path alone, he is leveling up but so can others to protect the state of the world out of their own choice (which is something jinwoo didnt want because he wanted everyone to be rid of the strugles he went through, and both thoughts are valid imo). He is walking this path not to overtake his father's struggles but to walk alongside him, and to let him know he truly isnt alone as he thinks he is. This fucking novel I swear---

MAN THATS CRAZY.... god. i hate when adaptations ruin things that literally sucks so bad.... maybe i will have to go read the novel because as it the manhwa is on such thin fucking ice for me but the story itself truky does seem promising... and from what you said all of my beef comes from stupid adaptation decisions they made. man...

Imperial Family AU (TOH Crack AU)

This was the one that I created in my sleep, and I really liked the idea of this AU

Belos is actually Hunter's dad, and he isn't a complete bastard

The Golden Guard title does exist, but they're not Hunter

Hunter's actual title is Second Prince of the Boiling Isles

Belos killed his brother by complete accident, and it's his biggest regret

Grimwalkers don't exist in the modern day, as one of the ingredients (Selkidomus) went extinct

This AU originally started as pure crack

Raven Empress AU

Belos dies several years before Luz steps foot on the Boiling Isles

Due to some extremely convoluted succession rules, Lilith becomes Hunter's Regent for the first 6 months of her reign

To be clear, Lilith didn't marry Belos, but she just happened to be head of the Emperor's Coven at the time

Lilith is still Aroace

Belos is still a bastard

Technically this AU diverged from Canon ~400 years before the show proper, but it does have something to do with Hunter and his little brother

On the topic of your actual question- I can definitely see her doing that! Some of the non-magic interests we know she has (based on things like posters in her room or references she makes) off the top of my head are like. Off-brand versions of soul eater, resident evil, various animes, etc.

Tbh I feel like (since this would obvi take place during the montage in Thanks to Them) all of the witch kids would really enjoy horror related media? Like. It reminds them of home when they see gnarly bodies mutilated by fungus or anime battles where some twink gets bisected. The boiling isles is Scary As Hell and there seems to be a very casual attitude towards violence a lot of the time (grudgby as a sport, the fact that a 14 yr old was allowed to enter an underground fighting ring, etc)? That's part of the whole joke is that Luz gets isekaid to a very inhospitable fantasy world so unlike her dreams! But for the rest of the hexsquad, zombies and draculas and what have you brings back memories, yknow?

Personally I'm partial to Luz getting some of the other kids into resident evil the most bc. I like resident evil lol. putting forth the hc that Leon Kennedy was Hunters bi awakening

But also Hunter has a Japanese flag patch on his sweater so I'm taking that as evidence that he's at least seen anime. I'm more versed in shoujo than shounen (willow and amity would love sailor moon btw. Amity also likes precure and willow likes cardcaptor sakura) but I feel like there's a lot of shounen anime that would appeal to Hunter. Gus too! But also I feel like Gus has really eclectic taste in media. He watches shows meant for different age groups, he watches things in different genres. He watches French new-wave and he watches kids cartoons. He's got the range.

he just wants to in take as much of human culture as possible and honestly? I think it'd be fun if Luz and Gus' roles as Human and Witch are reversed in the sense that the witch is strong-arming the human who's obsessed with magic into showing them ~human stuff~ bc they're autistic about it. It's dynamics like these that I love in the show and I know they would've loved to do more with everyone in the human realm 😭

(also anon honourable mention to the fact that Hunter and Gus are canonical Trekkies and got into it entirely independently of Luz. Local human literally does not give a shit about human things. Local witches, on the other hand, are eating that shit up like it's bread sticks)

So as I'm writitng this I'm realizing this is much more fleshed out then I thought lol

Okay well then. The basics of the au go as follows:

Sometime after the whole Purpled-killed-Slime deal, he meets up with Fundy to really think about what they've both been doing. And realize that they need a break, badly.

So, now they are faced with the challenge of breaking out of the Dream SMP! I don't know exactly how but between my headcanons of Fundy being God-adjacent and Purpled being a Watcher, it shouldn't be too hard to get out :)

They actually land in Hypixel for a bit, which offers them a chance to rest and save up some money for food and stuff! It is here they realize a huge problem. Because they are both still minors (I headcanon Fundy as 16 and Purpled as 17, going on 18 when this happens), they can't make a world for themselves without parental consent.

So they turn to trying to hack into anarchy servers. Which can only go wrong.

They end up hacking into 3rd Life in the end, thinking it was just another anarchy server, and because again, Fundy is God-adjacent and Purpled is a Watcher, they somehow get in.

Fundy spawns in the forest, not all that far from the refugee group (the place that had to giant phantom attack), and has to explain to everyone that 'yes I hacked in but only because me and my friend need a place to stay for like four months until he turns 18 sorry again please don't kick us out.'. The group decide to let him stay if Grian agrees.

Purpled meanwhile, spawned in the desert! He quickly find Grian and also explains what's going on, but more... harsher? He doesn't know if this is a whitelisted server but if it isn't then he's gotta be harsh. Grian decides to take a vote with everyone, and they agree on letting the kids stay. What harm could they do?

Fundy ends up tagging along with Martyn, and yes that means he meets Ren. He ends up solidly on the side of Dogwarts, protecting it with his lives.

Purpled ends up following Grian to the desert due to him sensing that Grian is something like him (he never learned what a Watcher was, so this is basically his first time meeting another one). He's loyal mostly to Grian, and would probably betray Scar with ease.

However. Then fucking session four happens. After a good few months of peace and quiet, Grian fucking blows up three people. Two of which Fundy has already made very clear he would kill for. Purpled wasn't exactly happy to have blown people up, but he'll take any kind of kills he can get.

Fundy actually loses his green life after this, at that time when everyone gathered at the top of the hill. Scar accidentally pushes him off. When Fundy respawns, his body had changed. It's not uncommon for the players of life games to have changes to themselves, whether it be hybrid features or limbs being weird. Fundy however, loses an eye and grows wings. Neither of which he takes well.

Purpled is shocked at what Scar did, and almost goes for him, only stopped by the 'no killing on green' rule. However, he does start doing bounty hunter work again. Good server to try to get back into the swing of things.

Before it was late summer and everyone was still having a good time and now it's mid fall and Ren's made Martyn kill him and the Red Army is assembled and Joel's doing his own thing and people are dropping like flies. Purpled's first death happened during session five, and included a hoard of zombies and a very large pit.

And then the little raid Etho does on desert duo happens. Only this time, he had Fundy with him! Does it change anything? No. They both die.

And now Fundy's down his let arm, which makes it much harder to fight, and the anger at being weaker then the rest of Dogwarts make the bloodlust simmer beneath the surface.

Purpled meanwhile is trying to decide on the best way to proceed. Should he stay in the desert, with Scar, who killed one of his best friends? Or should he go live with Joel, and have an easy way to make more bounty hunter kills? He ends up making the choice once he's on red, killed by a stray TNT trap in the woods. He'll live with Grian for now, but if Scar does anything, then he'll leave.

And then sessions 7 & 8 happen! Oh joy! Purpled's out during session 8, near the beginning when attacks are random and on whoever's in your way. Fundy dies in the final battle of Dogwarts, shortly after Etho and by the exact same method.

They end up back on Hypixel and it takes them a few minutes to actually talk to each other. Because, after all, they really just hacked onto a whitelisted server and... what, found that people can be kind? That the Dream SMP was an odd one out? How does one exactly reshape their worldviews in such a short amount of time? And they still carry the scars. Fundy's still got his wings, and is down an eye and an arm. And Purpled's unable to fly after his wing got badly torn down the middle.

No matter what they think, the current situation is making a world for themselves. Or that is the problem, until Ren and Grian message Fundy and Purpled respectively.

Grian messages Purpled because he Knows the kid's a Watcher, and an untrained one at that. His power could be deadly if Purpled's not taught how to control it. He offers Purpled that chance to come to Hermitcraft, just for a little bit, to learn about his powers and how to protect people on servers.

Ren reaches out to Fundy because the kid's one of his soldiers, and Ren's not resting until he knows all of his soldiers (his family), are safe. He offers to let Fundy onto Hermitcraft, for many reasons but the most prominent one is so he can get Doc to help make Fundy a new arm.

And the kids go to Hermitcraft. And they promise to themselves they'll only stay for a month or two. And then that turns into three, and the into six. And suddenly, they've spent almost an entire year on Hermitcraft, and they don't really want to leave anymore.

Okay MCYT Stardew Valley AU:

Gem is a farmer that moved to this sleepy town of Hermit's Valley to escape the big city.

Some of the people she meets are:

Mayor Scar, a venture capitalist known for scheming to make Hermit's Valley a big tourist destination, but most of these schemes fail as he's a sweetie at heart and can't bring himself to potentially harm the town.

Grian, The Local Carpenter and Builder that often gets into mischief and gets out of it just as quickly, Grian got away with it and learned nothing.

Pearl, the local Garbage woman who tries her best to help with the messy state of the farm Gem inherited despite Pearl being extremely busy. Also incredibly prone to mischief she's known for her quick wit and devious persona

Mumbo, the local inventor who often builds crazy machines using his enormous wealth on supplies, very charming and very excitable he gets Grian out of a lot of those aforementioned scraps.

Impulse, the Dwarf Mining extraordinaire, he often can be found in the caves underneath the town, though the monsters scare him and he can't fight he somehow gets by.

Stress, the school teacher, initially sweet on the surface but in reality a bit adventurous and reckless.

Cleo, the Monster Hunter, a fighting champion that took the moniker of "The Zombie" in her glory days due to her ability to instantly get up from a finishing blow, she retired to Hermit's Valley after an unfortunate injury that was absolutely from a fight and totally not her falling down the stairs. Joe Hills, The local Joe Hills, he lives slightly on the outskirts of town, some speculate he may be a writer, others a musician, he just disappears some days, says he visits some place called "Gnash Vill". The only thing most people agree on is that he's probably a ghost, but he's a nice guy so no one really minds.

Those are all I have for now, if anyone wants to suggest some ideas for other townsfolk go ahead, btw even though it's mostly Hermits I'm open to any Mcyt as long as it's not like, Dsmp or something.

Oh man, about Zeni (zeni's my favorite- I could rave about this goofy fictional inspector for hours).

This is gonna be long, btw- but you said you were okay with that last time I sent an ask so I'm goin' all in >:)

I really like what you have planned so far (even if it's just an outline)! As for what he can do, he could tie into that legendary zombie hunt mechanic you mentioned a bit ago.

Maybe while you're out doing hunt missions or exploring the world in general, you can hear rumors about some sort of mystery loner zombie hunter figure. They've killed a lot of monsters, saving even more folks in the process, and have become a sort of campfire story-esque figure, many not sure if they're even real.

As you continue to progress through the game, you can learn they've garnered an enigmatic moniker and that their identity is a complete mystery; no one's seen their face or heard an actual name before. Jumping off your Captain Ahab comparison, maybe this figure is genuinely nicknamed Ahab. Of the few people who managed to talk to this hunter, rumor says that they only ever talk about/ask for info about that one specific zombie that killed Yata. Hunting monsters is literally all they do, they're the best at it, and if you get in their way you can't even guarantee your own safety.

While you're bagging zombies on these hunts, you can catch a glimpse of this figure watching from afar; but even if you're playing as Lupin, you can never seem to catch up to them, or if you scope in on them as Jigen, you can never get a decent enough look to glean anything you haven't already heard from the rumor mill.

Then you get to the final hunt of the zombie hunter mission chain. Or rather, you think you've gotten to it.

Okay, I'm gonna cut away real quick to explain a game mechanic idea. At the end of hunts, maybe you get a "kill quality rating"- it'd determine how salvageable the kill is for research data, or for getting usable/high-quality loot from the corpse, or whatever else (kinda like Red Dead).

Certain zombie types have certain vulnerabilities and/or resistances (fire, acid, etc) and can be damaged differently depending on what weapon type you use (heavy, medium, light, melee, arrows). Depending on the combination of weaponry you use, hitting weak spots, how quickly you kill it, etc... all of that stuff culminates into your rating. The higher the rating, the better the rewards and rep.

Obviously, in canon, you'd only ever kill these legendary zombies once; and if they kill you (since they're special enemies), they get kill animations on you like in Resident Evil 3 or whatever other game has that sort of mechanic. But in-game you can restart and respawn, re-encounter these zombies, and go for higher-quality kills and farm loot/crafting supplies, increasing your rating.

Once you get a high enough rating on all of the kills, you're given a final boss-esque zombie hunt. Now, the zombies you've fought before were challenges, don't get me wrong, but this one's REALLY challenging. It's rough- like "you're planned to die" rough because that'd be the actual case.

So the player (either Jigen or Lupin, depending on who you're playing as) puts up a good fight, but it's not enough. You can't escape. The kill animation is about to go off, and the zombie's winding up to skewer you like a kebab, barf acid on you, or just pummel your skull into pulp (I'll leave it up to you to determine which type would be challenging enough). Until suddenly, the cutscene's interrupted. Someone lassos the zombie and yanks it off of you. Wild guess as to who saves you-

That mysterious zombie-hunting figure.

They fight the zombie single-handedly with practiced ease, throwing a few more restraints with ridiculous accuracy to immobilize it further, showing some surprising strength by grappling with it to take it to the ground, before landing the killing blow with some sort of improv weapon that looks like it was designed to take out that specific type of zombie.

All the while you're still on the ground, Lupin/Jigen watching this scene play out practically stunned. Once the zombie's dead, this Ahab figure walks up to you, lifts/helps you up off of the ground, and... brings you in for a massive bearhug? What???

Then the figure lets you go, backs up a bit, takes off their mask AND IT'S ZENIGATA! BOOM! They can have a little "Holy shit, POPS?!" "LUPIN/JIGEN! Yeah, it's me!" exchange and aughh, it'd be great.

Hopefully, it isn't too far-fetched for the player to assume that Ahab is Zenigata or, at the very least, someone that Lupin/Jigen might already be familiar with. Between what you hear about the obsessive hunting, the loner syndrome, and the ruthless zombie-killing efficiency (tying into Zeni's absurd competency in canon against anyone (or in this case anything) that isn’t Lupin), one might assume Goemon at first- though the lack of any mention of a particular special sword might make you think twice. But by design, I think the player should figure out pretty easily in the actual cutscene that the figure is most likely Zenigata.

So back to looking at this from a gameplay standpoint. He'd say that he's been watching you kill all of these challenging zombies to see if you could handle something like the monster he's going after now, asking if you were interested in joining him. Since he likes Lupin and Jigen enough to trust them already, he would still want to be absolutely sure he wouldn't be putting them in any danger (despite knowing that they're capable on their own) by bringing them along, hence the player's need to earn the high kill quality ratings.

At this point, you'd have unlocked the real final raid zombie mission that you can accept whenever you feel like you're ready (i.e. level/equipment-wise, because you probably used some stuff when fighting that zombie earlier :/ ).

If you don't accept right out of the gate he'll just chill out at your base or something. I don't think he'd be suicidal enough to go after this thing solo- he'd want to guarantee this zombie's death and he knows he can't do that if he's dead. If you take too long to get back to him, maybe he'd leave? Or if you've found Goemon at that point, maybe he'd just go with him? I dunno. But if you accept, you go with Zenigata to hunt and kill the monster that killed Yata (and probably a ton of other people too, I'm imagining this thing as a real apex predator-level menace).

So that's what I have for ol' Pops. Like I said, I think he's neat and I want the best for him :D

Rewarding Lupin and Jigen (the player) for putting in the time to complete long mission chains by reuniting them with Fujiko, Goemon, and Zenigata (on top of earning some high-quality gear/special equipment, ofc) seems really wholesome to me. Maybe if you complete all of the missions to fully reunite the gang you can get a special ending to the game's story...?

Anyways, I hope this helps- especially if it makes figuring out what to do with/how to introduce Fujiko and Goemon any easier!

From me & Fang's Metroid/Star Wars/Sci-First adventure

This was right off the bat btw ::

JD is your typical rougish bounty hunter piloting the craft The Neverland with his AI assistant Trixie (who looks like Tinkerbell). Aeryn is a cargo pilot who was attempting to make a delivery. JD boarded Aeryn's ship to catch a bounty and during the scuffle the ship ended up crashing. JD and Aeryn agreed to work together to get off-planet.

They come across a mining station/city that was established. They quickly found out the entire planet was infested with parasitic worms that led the population to essentially turn into zombies. The pair found out that the target JD was after also survived the crash - a small team of thieves. Led by Alpha, their main target Delta, and two others.

Everyone agreed to work together to survive. After managing to escape the horde, they found a young boy (around Delta's age ~17-18) who was a citizen if the town. His dad was a general handyman, and the boy, Weylan, admitted that the miners found something and it led to this.

He never found any other survivors until now.

He had been using his father's teachings of how the vents/tunnels connect in the ceiling and below the structures of the settlement - only leaving for whatever food he could find and escaping without being seen. At this moment only JD, Aeryn, Alpha, Delta and Weylan were alive.

However their scent was giving them away. Weylan let them know of a signal booster and JD had a plan to send an SOS to Trixie who was nearby waiting. They had to go get the booster, however. In the night they made a dash for the booster located in a warehouse - using Weylan's knowledge of the vents. Aeryn convinced JD to get Weylan off-planet as well (it didn't take a lot to convince him, the kid was going to die if they didn't- either by zombie worm people or by starvation). Delta agreed to come quietly if they survive this as she was JD's main target, Alpha had agreed to keep her safe despite their usual criminal activity. Delta was new and he had been deliberately giving her easier missions - he was a gruff older soldier-like man and it was apparent he took to Delta like she was a daughter.

The team was caught, swarm came flooding in. Gnashing teeth and bloodied hands trying to claw at them, JD managed to get the booster and everyone got into a tunnel, Alpha ended up breaking his arm in the process. (The amount of red flags this man had btw...)

The horde was following their scent. They knew they didn't have a lot of time. They took the tunnels to where they needed to go - somewhere high - the signal tower. They still had to ascend and pray Trixie was looking for them. The horde however was starting to infest the tunnels.

Finally reaching their goal, the team climbed. Blasts firing from their weapons to buy them time, tires and hungry from the ship crash and this journey. Higher. Higher. Finally reaching the top, and everyone climbing to the roof, the stairs creaking and groaning with the amount of bodies weighing it down. Trixie got the signal and was coming as fast as she could, Weylan never shot a gun so Aeryn was guarding him, JD covering and Alpha and Delta holding their own. But the stairs snapped, they still needed some time. Alpha gave Delta his speech, and with a grenade in hand, gave the team the opening they needed to flee.

The surviving 4 got to the Neverland. And quickly fled the planet.

Once in orbit, the two youngers took their breath of safety, and just cried. Weylan saw his parents get ripped to shreds, his friends, neighbors. Mutated into twisted bodies of flesh and alien life. Delta, now going by her name Allie, experienced the end of a nightmare but lost someone she considered a father. Aeryn and JD now have the responsibility of helping them recover.

As the story goes, Weylan took his trauma and turned it into his own goal - his strength. Swearing that nobody should experience that and that he will find the source of the plague and see to it's destruction. He went from a boy barely holding on - starving and living in vents like a rat, to someone who can laugh, fight and interact. He's a goofy teenager who got a second chance to live.

How do *you* think it would have gone down if Pitou had killed Killua instead of Kite? I see so many people say that there would have been like, nuclear levels of fury, but idk, if the whole scenario was swapped I think he’d be in too much disbelief/denial to be angry, and then eventually he’d be in too much despair. Not to say that Killua isn’t ‘important enough’ to Gon, OBVIOUSLY. I just think the emotional breakdown would happen more saddening than angry. Do you think he’d be mad?

How do *you* think it would have gone down if Pitou had killed Killua instead of Kite?

God, this question... why u gotta hurt us like that? (Joke, <3 you.) Anyway, since this a hypothetical this will just be my opinion, so take with a grain of salt. I think the first difference from what happened in the manga is that Gon would feel even more guilty about Killua's death.

I mean, think about it: When Kite was killed, at first Gon was in denial about it, and then when he was confronted with what Killua called "the reality we helped create" he felt so guilty that he let zombie Kite beat him up.

Gon's reasoning was, he - and Killua, but he never ever puts any blame on Killua, the way Knov and Morel both do when they chastise him for running away from Pitou - causes Kite to get hurt just by being there. If they weren't there, Kite would have been fine.

The thing about this reasoning is, it is a child's reasoning based on the idea that the adult authority figure (Kite) has absolute power and makes absolutely correct decisions. Later when he meets up with Kite again in the chapter called "atonement" Kite explains to him that it was his own miscalculation about how strong the ants would be that put all of them in that situation. He would have investigated the ant queen even if Gon hadn't been there... and it's possible he would have been ambushed and killed by Pitou, even if Gon hadn't been there, as well.

In other words, Gon's guilt over what happened to Kite is somewhat irrational. And it also follows patterns he's shown before in the manga, where he feels the main issue is that he is not strong enough, and the solution is that he needs to train to get stronger. That's the standard message of shounen battle manga, but Hunter x Hunter kind of re-examines that idea... first, by putting it into a more realistic psychological context, where it relates back to Gon's issues with his dad etc etc, not being strong enough to meet his dad.

 And also, I think in Hunter x Hunter the overall stance towards these shounen messages is mixed.  Sometimes it’s a good thing to think that way, because it makes you feel better - instead of wallowing in feelings of inferiority and helplessness, you are taking active steps to fix the problem.

And sometimes, it is a child’s idea, because real life doesn't always follow these kinds of clear moral messages from manga. Sometimes you're just in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and it's not related to anything you did or didn't do. Sometimes life is just unfair.

Anyway... getting back to Killua. If it was "Gon's fault" that Kite died... wouldn't it be even more Gon's fault if Killua died?

I mean, think about it: Kite was just doing his job in East Gorteau, a job he would have done even if Gon hadn't been there. But Killua was there because Gon was there. If Gon hadn't been there, Killua wouldn't have been there. Therefore, QED, Killua's death at Pitou's hards is 10,000% Gon's fault. Not only that, but I think he'd feel retroactively guilty for taking Killua being at his side for granted, and not thinking about the danger he was putting them both in by entering dangerous situations. "I can die but you can't", etc.

I don't think Killua himself, BTW, would think about it this way at all - I think in Killua's mind, he was as good as dead living at home with his family, it was a kind of walking death. Gon "saved" him from that life, therefore Gon saved his life, therefore Killua owes Gon his life, and he's willing to follow Gon into life and death situations in return - which is also something encouraged by the Hunter Association code, in contrast to how his family thinks. You sometimes have to take risks, including with your life, if you want to get anywhere, that's how Hunters think - "true" Hunters anyway - but it's not how the Zoldyecks think. So I think in Killua's mind, it would have been a worthy death, especially if by dying he saved Gon's life.

(Sidenote, but one of the big messages Killua takes away from this whole arc - Killua’s character growth, if you will - is that his life actually has a lot of value, because he has to take care of his sister, right?  So it would have been a problem if he’d died.  But I think he doesn’t realize that until afterward, when he’s waiting for Gon to wake up in the hospital. )

Anyway. Honestly I think Gon would react to Killua's death the way he reacted to Kite's death. He would see it as his fault, and feel the need to atone, including with his life if that happened to be how it played out. I don't think he would be catatonic, not because he doesn’t love Killua enough, but because Gon is a character who externalizes his feelings (Killua is the one who internalizes them). To "fix" how he was feeling, he would feel the need to "fix" the external situation. 

(Also, Gon being catatonic would be really boring manga.  He would need to go on the revenge quest to make it more interesting for the readers.   Probably Togashi would find a way to bring Killua back from death, too, because Hunter x Hunter can flirt with dark themes at times, but it’s not that dark.)

Anyway, setting aside the genre conventions and just looking at how the characters are written... I honestly think he'd be on even more of a suicidal revenge quest, and i think it would be up to the other (adult) members of the team - Shoot, Morel and Knuckle primarily - to temper that. Maybe they would remind him that Killua died to save his life, so if he throws his life away, he's not honoring Killua's sacrifice. I think that might get thru to him, in a way that other arguments wouldn't. He needs to live because that's the choice that Killua made and that's what Killua would have wanted.

Wow this got heavy... anyway, thanks for the ask. The short answer is I think Gon would be so mad, but not just at Pitou - also, primarily, at himself.
