Ra's al Ghul is a worse rip-off of the Mandarin. I mean, technically Ra's and The Mandarin are both rip-offs of Fu Manchu, but still. The Mandarin came first, and The Mandarin is more interesting than Ra's al Ghul. Ra's is some weird eco-terrorist who wants to wipe out humanity. Even the Mandarin isn't that crazy. The Mandarin just wants to conquer earth, not kill us all. Also, The Mandarin has ten rings and amazing karate skills. Ra's is just a weird man with immortality. No cool powers or sense of honour. Just a weirdo who probably supports eugenics (if not a total population wipeout).
So, yeah. Screw Ra's al Ghul. And Poison Ivy, too. I don't really like these eco-terrorist types. They're weird and creepy. And i'm just going to pretend ra's and talia don't exist. If I need a fu manchu rip-off with cool powers, i'll take the Mandarin. If i need an immortal evil, I can take Vandal Savage or something. Ra's is useless.

Dead languages and maybe Wei Ying is long-lost royalty
Today I had a discussion with @pakhnokh regarding why Wei Wuxian didn’t know the deeper layer of meaning behind the Lan forehead band. It was a long discussion on Twitter, so I figured I should just make a post here and leave this information out for anyone who might find it useful.
To start off: The reason why Wei Ying didn't know the deeper layer of meaning of the Lan forehead band was in the book. But it was written in a very opaque way, in one single throw-away line. In the book, when Wei Ying had to copy the Lan rules, he specifically complained that the rules were written in seal script.
The Useless Ye Olde’ Script
Seal script is a script that predated traditional Mandarin. It was infamous for being needlessly complex and having dozens, if not hundreds different dialects and writing methods. Some forms of seal script were entirely different languages altogether. When Qin Shi Huang united ancient China, he burned a lot of books and forced people to adopt a standard way to write, thus cementing traditional Mandarin as a singular language that is still used today, 2000 years after. A way to visualize how complex seal script was, is that there were 22 different ways to write the word 'sword'.
Tumblr media
That is how mind-bogglingly complex it was. And worse, it was the source of much conflict in ancient times. To explain it simply, it was supposed to be one language. But if people could not even agree on how to write the same word, then how could they agree on more important things and cease warring against each other?
Language standardization was one of Qin Shi Huang’s greatest achievements, if not the greatest, as it laid the foundation for more peace and eventual unification in later dynasties.
This topic was made into an Academy Award-nominated movie, Hero by Zhang Yimou in 2002.
Tumblr media
(the word ‘sword’ that Qin Shi Huang decided on, thus wiping out the other 20+ ways to write the same word)
Dating Mo Dao Zu Shi in real history (or, Wei Ying might actually be long-lost royalty)
In a very interesting turn of events, MXTX has confirmed in her latest interview in Subaru magazine, that the events of MDZS happened during Wei Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties (commonly referred to as the Six Dynasties era by English-speaking historians, even though these two don’t perfectly line up).
Yes, the same Wei 魏 in Wei Ying 魏婴, Wei Wuxian 魏无羡.
So the events in MDZS took place in the era immediately after the fall of the Qin dynasty (caused by Qin Shi Huang’s death and his sons not being able to measure up). Therefore, Wei Ying’s generation is in a time after the language has standardized into a single form.
The Lan rules, at least the first set and the meaning of the forehead band, were written about 500 years before Wei Ying’s generation, at the founding of House Lan. So that would put it squarely in the pre-Qin, pre-lingual-standardization era.
So by Wei Ying’s time, the Lan rules were essentially written in a dead, kinda useless, and very very hard-to-read-because-it-has-some-hundred-different-dialect language.
That’s on top of the fact that it was probably written in the highest level of 书面语 shumianyu (written language) possible. I.e. extremely condensed and truncated (with zero punctuation).
So the Lan rules are more or less a very thick law book of a different nation written in the strictest, most condensed dead language that is in no way, shape, or form still in practical use for Wei Ying (and most other people not Lan). Do you feel like reading it? I don’t.
And that is why Wei Ying never figured out the original meaning of the forehead band despite having copied the rules hundreds of times (first day in class, he was already punished and sentenced to copying the rules 100 times by Lan Qiren).
Because he was just copying the words without really reading them. This was mentioned when Wei Ying asked Lan Wangji the meaning of the Lan forehead band, and Lan Wangji replied with, you have copied the rules so many times and you still don’t know?
But isn’t Wei Ying really well-read and smart, and what about the Wen book?
1/ Wei Ying is smart and well-read. There was one throw-away line in the book that mentioned his having read all the books available to him in Lotus Pier, and that he had read all kinds of trivia (including the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes curse that got put on Jin Zixun). But it was also stated that he favored practical things or things that interested him. Lan rules in dead, extremely hard to read language are… well… yeah…
There was never any mention in canon where he remembered specific Lan rules unless it was literally beaten into him by teenage Lan Wangji.
2/ In the novel, the Lan rules are singled out as the only materials written in seal script. The Wen books were standard issued to everyone who took part in the Wen education camp. So the chance that it was written in seal script is low to none.
Wei Ying is not the only person who doesn’t know the meaning of the Lan forehead band
Jiang Cheng didn't know either. Jin Ling didn't know either. During the Wen archery competition, when Wei Ying pulled off Lan Wangji's forehead band, he did ask Jiang Cheng what the hell was that, when Lan Wangji and other Lan members reacted like he did something shameful. Jiang Cheng replied with, how the hell would I know? Their house has so many rules. Just stop poking them.
Jin Ling didn't know until the other Lan teenagers told him. The only characters who know this in canon are all members of Lan house. The impression that Wei Ying is the only one who doesn't know is 100 percent fanon. Keep in mind both Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling are clan heirs, so their education and knowledge of other houses absolutely are not low.
In fact, the novel specifically shows that.....the rest of the cultivation world is not that clear on the actual specifics of Lan rules either. This is shown when Jin Zixun pressured Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji into drinking wine, a clear violation of Lan rules, and the rest of the cultivators in the banquet cheered him on.
These cultivators were also heads of Houses or very high-ranking members. Many of them would have studied in Cloud Recess. So again, people who have high education… still know shit all about the actual specifics of Lan rules beyond a vague, general monk-like impression.
About the only other person aside from Wei Ying (and Lan members) who knew the specific rule that Lans do not drink in that banquet was Jin Guangyao, a character whose trademark is high intelligence and extreme social savvy (plus having roomed with Lan Xichen and taken care of him for unknown amount of time right before the Sunshot campaign)
Are there secret parts of the Lan rules?
No. The Lan rules are public. The book is very clear on this. All Lan rules are carved into a massive stone placed at the foot of the mountain where Cloud Recess is, where anyone passing through or coming into House Lan can see it.
This rule stone was first mentioned when Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian met for the first time. Wei Ying complained that he didn’t know the rules and why are there so many things forbidden in the Lan rules? Lan Wangji replied with, rules are written on the stone. Go read it yourself.
The second time it was mentioned in the book, was Lan Qiren’s first class. The first thing he did was complained that even with the stone and rules being in open space, nobody bothered to read. So he will read the rules now.
The book mentioned at least two different sets of Lan rules that both need to be obeyed: 礼则篇 Lize Pian (Book of Rites) 上义篇 Shang Yi Pian (Book of Justice). Whether the rules are separated further into more sets or not is unknown.
Why are some Lan rules better known than others?
Because Lan rules are based on 克己復禮 Keji Fuli, a real-life Confucius asceticism that calls for the restraint/purge of one’s ego and to return to the core rites. This is also newly confirmed in MXTX’s new interview, though it has been more or less heavily suggested in the book itself, with House Lan being known as the House of Gentlemen.
Gentlemen here is not the Western ideal of Gentlemen, but rather a Confucius ideal and set of values. Confucius is the person who created this ideal in the first place.
So it’s not that some rules are better known, but rather the entire image of Lan House is a huge pointer as to how they live their life: with great restraint.

First Sentence Tag Game
So I was going through my drafts and I have this mostly-completed tag game post from April??? that I appaently never finished. Probably because there aren’t 10 things here. WHATEVER. HAVE AN OLD POST. And since it’s a tag game I’m tagging @lailuhhh @commanderbunnbunn @bloodfromthethorn @nativestarwrites @appalachianapologies @you-go-kaboom-i-go-kaboom @readingwriter92 @thesammykinz @ruztyryan @dinosaurswant2rule GO FORTH AND TAG!
------------------------------
Tagged by @lailuhhh and @authorangelita - thank you!!
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
I decided to post the first lines of 10 WIPs instead of 10 finished stories. I opened these docs in the order I’ve workedon them, most recent first (skipping the Murdoc thing and the Wilderness thing, since they’re partly posted).
A thing with boats:
Water cuts through the air on the left—port—side of the boat as Mac turns it toward the mainland. The hint of fog hanging in the air to the south is a strong lure, even though it doesn't look very thick.
Crouched against the back of the boat behind him, Jack curses but gets off a trio of shots, earning them a momentary break from being shot at. The green band of trees is getting larger, but it’s going to be dubious safety if they don’t get farther ahead of the boat filled with guys who want to murder them.
Patty but Worse:
Prologue - January, 2012
The two files lay open on the desk between them, a spread of photos and reports that Patricia Thornton refuses to let distract her. She knows what they say. She read both files forwards and backwards five times before she even agreed to her boss’s little plan to just drop by Afghanistan.
“Training Day” (a WIP I apparently started for the writealong):
Jack is lounging against the passenger side of the truck with his canteen in hand when Mac gets there. He’s got his uncomfortable vest on but in an apparent concession to the fact that they’re on base and it’s about a billion degrees in the shade, he’s not wearing his helmet for once. “How’d it go, professor?”
A 1x11-related WIP
No one is more surprised than Mac when they’re out of prison a mere four hours after they went in. When the guard woke them up and hauled them out of their cell, he really through his Mandarin must be getting rusty. But when they reach the prison’s waiting room, Riley is already there, along with two people he doesn’t recognize who are obviously waiting for them.
“Paper Pushing”
Paper folders. They seem archaic, but then, keeping your secrets on paper does make it harder for people like Riley to get at them.
Although there are probably digital copies of all these folders, too. They’re stacked in four neat piles along the edge of Thornton’s desk. Every last one of them has a security tag on it.
Another WIP from the writealong called “Ranch Day”:
Departing: Los Angeles, 12:41pm. Arriving: Dallas, 5:53pm.
Mac realizes he’s been staring at the airline tickets a beat too long when Jack clears his throat. “You, uh, you do still want to come, don’t you, Mac?”
“Yeah, no, I do. I want to go. I just didn’t realize–I mean, I didn’t realize you were buying tickets. I can pay you back–”

Am I doing too much
Maybe it's my desperation or the fact I had believed (subconsciously) that I would have instantaneous results compareable to what I watched on the potential side hustle gigs that are out there that I didn't know about. But I will say I was expecting better results to what I've been getting.
Now the plan was to have all these things going for me, with success in a month (more realistic conscious outlook). Getting some Etsy sales trickling in here and there, and being monetized instaneously with YouTube, and getting that extra income to buy a house before the year is up.
Not even my more realistic outlook come to fruition. Now I will definately I'm spending the majority of my business developing time on my Facts YouTube Channel. But my AI generator needed my subscription to renew to use it (I'm on a basic plan so it doesn't last long). So things like Etsy took to the back burning as I'm more of the digital product kind of person.
I will definitely say lately it's felt like I've been trying todo too much too soon. But I blame my anxiety on that. I've been doing my best to hold that h*ll hole of my brain at bay.
But you're probably looking at all I've written since starting this blog, and going, "Well f*ck, you are doing too much. Your crazy" or something like that. And I agree. But let me tell you why and you can tell me if you still think I'm crazy, I'm probably just more desperate.
To start, I have ADHD, found out during the start of the pandemic in 2020. I had a newborn, I was working from home and falling asleep all the time while working (Granted my job literally had my twiddling my thumbs 98% of the time when I wasn't in the office and even then I was twiddling away 90% of the time. And you're probably like "With a newborn, I don't doubt it, you probably don't sleep at night".
And your wrong there. All my babies were good sleepers, and technically still are. But anyways once I started to treat my ADHD, my middle of the day fatigue disappeared. And that was one problem I've been trying to solve for over 10 years and perplexed my doctors. And my ADHD is why I never continued making music videos on my personal YouTube account, I started doing that for fun when YouTube started up and then dropped it when I couldn't figure out how to had video clips to my videos without being copy righted.
I know I've talked about my attempts at this stuff before. But flash forward to 2023. I work 2 jobs, and my husband also works a full time job and I have 4 kiddos' with 2 in Independent School instead of private. As my income goes up, the cost of the school goes up. And unless I change something financially, this is the last year they will get to go. And I want them to stay.
Why to struggle to keep them in when it causes me so much financial and mental stress, you might ask? Because the community is awesome, but also because my kids get exposed to foreign languages as early as Junior Kindergarten (Preschool- 4y). My oldest (11y) has been taking Mandarin since he was 4 and will continue to do so in Middle School. And not only does he get to take Mandarin, but Latin is part of their curriculum. And my 3rd born (6y) has been exposed to French and Spanish. The School struggled to keep a part time Mandarin Teacher, so they had to phase that program out 2y ago, so my oldest was the last to have the Madarin Opportunity in Lower School.
But still its' one opportunity I wish the entire US education could get behind for Elementary Education. I mean just about every country with an education, makes learning English a priorty and English is their 2nd language, and they start pretty young. But it's the one thing I don't want to take away from them, as I struggled in Middle School and High School to pick up French and trying to learn Japanese off of Anime is a no go.
But this is the sole reason I decided (kind of impulsively, all the best things I've done, and the worse, have been done on impulse) to start up all these side things and turn them into successful businesses. With my ADHD under control, along with my depression and anxiety, being able to stay focused on stuff long term is a new thing for me. Granted it's only been successful in mobile gaming, (1 game has lasted almosted 4y, started it right before my diagnosis).
And so far, I've been monitoring all my stuff on a routine daily basis for the past month and researching optimization ideas to get my stuff noticed and even if this was 2018, I probably would have forgot about all that I was trying to accomplish and gone back to zoned out, not really living ways and working 3 jobs.
So am I crazy, desperate, or just a workaholic who doesn't know their limits? You can let me know your honest opinion, I promise I can't easily take offense.

*****
Adrien was happy. No one else in class knew why he had been smiling all day. Chloe was probably the only one in the room that knew why he was so happy today. But she was not going to tell anyone and ruin his day when Liar Rossi would would just use it to make up some more lies and ruin his happiness.
Things had not gotten better since the lying Italian had joined the class. Even though now that Marinette had transferred to Mendeleiev’s class, things had not gotten better. If anything, things had gotten worse since now Lila thought that she could not freely lie and manipulate almost non-stop with no one there to attempt to expose her.
The class was now half and half with who believed the liar and who doesn’t. The ones that don’t believe her being Adrien, Chloe, Nathaniel, Kim, and Juleka. Sabrina was decided to be a neutral part and not take a side. She listened to Lila’s tales, but normally stayed by Chloe’s side. Alya, Nino, Alix, Max, Ivan, Mylene, and Rose were all firmly on Lila’s side and nothing could ever change their minds.
Adrien had finally been starting to stand his ground against the liar since he had seen her chase Marinette away. He was reaching his wits end with her constantly hanging on his arm and never letting go when he asks or even demands her to. Adrien had managed to convince Bustier that he was too bust with his schedule to tutor Lila and that he would be better off sitting in the back with Nathaniel since it was more quiet than being next to Lila “never shuts up” Rossi.
“What are you so happy about today, Sunshine,” Nathaniel asked his friend.
“I have some friends coming today,” Adrien answered. “They were visiting their grandparents in the United States and decided to stop in France on their way back to their home in Greece. Their names are Lyon and Vallia Garden.”
“You know Greeks, cool,” Nathaniel said. “When did you meet them? Obviously it wasn’t a time close to now since you have not left the country and no Greeks have showed up here either, to my knowledge.”
“I met them about a year before my mom disappeared,” Adrien says. “Their family owns and operates an incredible animal and nature sanctuary that almost takes up the entire island they live on. They host a lot of charities there. Concerts, celebrity birthdays, auctions, art shows, even cooking contests. I was there with my parents for a charity fashion show.”
“Do you speak Greek or did they speak French,” Nathaniel was curious since he did know that Adrien already also spoke Mandarin and English.
“They speak French,” Adrien says. “They were the only ones there that were my age, so I was glad to have someone to talk to. We’ve kept in contact ever since.”
“Sounds great,” Nathaniel smiled at his friend. “Do they know about... everything going on?”
“Dear god, no,” Adrien stated. “Lyon is fiercely protective of his friends. He is a master archer and when he caught poachers trying to break into the sanctuary, he actually shot them all before calling the police.”
“I am not sure whether to be terrified of him when they come or in awe of him,” Nathaniel admitted.
“Nothing wrong with both, as Vallia would probably say,” Adrien chuckled. “I do admit that they can be pretty scary. Especially since when they help out at their family sanctuary, Lyon seems to have a way with their wolves and Vallia seems to be a lion whisperer.”
“I am both terrified and looking forward to meeting them,” Nathaniel nervously laughed. “I just hope Marc doesn’t faint when he learns this stuff about them. I love him, but we all know he is naturally timid.”
“I know,” Adrien chuckled. “Remember when he first met Kagami?”
“I will never let him live that down,” Nathaniel smirked, loving it when he is able to tease his boyfriend.
Before the two could continue their conversation, there was sudden yelling from outside the classroom and coming from the courtyard. It sounded like four people arguing, two of them not sounding like they were French.
“What is that,” Nathaniel wondered as they stood up.
“I’m a little worried to find out,” Adrien stated.
The two had stayed behind to chat after the bell rang and everyone else left for the day. They immediately left the classroom and looked over the railing and into the courtyard. They were soon joined by Marinette, Marc, Kagami, Aurore, and Mireille from Mendeleiev’s class, who had also heard the yelling.
“What’s going on,” Marinette immediately asked.
They all look over the rail. They see two people arguing quite loudly with Alya and Lila. They certainly were both unique-looking teens.
The first was a girl that was quite beautiful and had a grace and elegance to her style. She had long blond hair braided with roses and butterflies and had pink streaks. Her eyes were a stunning silver that you could see, if you were close enough, had specks of blue in them. Her style was a red, pink, and purple dawn colored dress with gold flats. On her wrists were diamond rose cuff bracelets, a butterfly on the one on her right wrist.
The boy next to her gave off a very icy exterior that also screamed honor and loyalty that only a knight would have. A tall boy with hair that was actually black with streaks of white and blue in it, coming to the length of Adrien's. His eyes were the opposite of the girl's, blue with silver specks. His outfit of choice was a sky blue t-shirt under a white jean vest, matching the blue pants with white boots. On his hands were white fingerless gloves. Around his neck was a sword and shield pendant as well as a white cloak only going down to his knees.
“Lyon, Vallia,” Adrien gasped.
“Those are your two friends from Greece, Adrien,” Kagami asked, Adrien having told her during their last fencing practice.
“Yeah,” Adrien said. “Their plane must have landed earlier than expected and they decided to come here.”
“Why are they arguing with Alya and Lila,” Mireille wondered.
“If it has something to do with that liar, it’s probably her fault,” Marc, of all people, stated.
It was a pretty open secret in the school that literally everyone but most of Bustier’s class, plus Bustier herself and Damocles, were all aware that Lila was nothing but a manipulative liar. In fact, most of them were shocked that the class, teacher, and principal believed her outlandish lies in the first place.
“Maybe Lila tried to cozy up to them and they caught her in a lie,” Marinette guessed.
“Lyon and Vallia do come from a rich family,” Adrien said. “Not only is their family known for their sanctuary, but they also have the largest jewel collection in the world. Like the medallions on their foreheads.”
They all looked and saw that the two did indeed have crystal medallions on their foreheads. Vallia’s was a rose quartz butterfly and Lyon’s was a sapphire wolf.
“What is up with that book that Lyon has,” Kagami noticed.
They all looked and saw that Lyon was holding a pretty large book that looked very old. It was bound with brown leather that had Frankenstein-like stitches all over it along with old silver metal on the cover as well. It also had a very large buckle.
“They did say they wanted to show me something,” Adrien said. “They went to the US to celebrate Halloween with their grandparents so maybe they got some type of prop and wanted to show it to me.”
They all quickly started to get into the courtyard and make their way over to the four. In a city plagued by a terrorist that uses negative emotions, arguments usually lead to someone getting akumatized.
“My brother does not worship the devil,” Vallia shouted at Alya and Lila.
“That book is a Book of Shadows,” Lila pointed at the book in Lyon’s hands. “It’s a tool of witchcraft, which is all about worshiping the devil. I should know. My great uncle is a world renown priest back in Italy.”
“Not all witchcraft is devil worship, you pathetic liar,” Lyon sneered. “And there is no world famous priest in Italy since the last well-known one was arrested five years ago for killing people using fake exorsisms.”
(Reference to an episode of Criminal Minds.)
“Lila is not a liar,” Alya yelled. “You are, you devil witches.”
“This isn’t even a real spellbook,” Vallia screamed at them. “It’s a movie prop out grandparents won in an auction. They knew we loved Halloween, so they got us a prop from out favorite Halloween movie.”
“See, that proves you worship the devil,” Lila accused. “Halloween is a devil cult holiday, my great uncle proved that years ago but America rejected his facts and still celebrates it.”
“It is not,” Lyon yelled. “You are the worst liar I have ever come across. You should be ashamed to insult an entire holiday just because you don’t like it. Pathetic, just like all you other mythology copying Italians.”
(Reference to the Roman and Greek rivalry from Percy Jackson.)
“How dare you,” Lila screamed.
“Lyon, Vallia,” Adrien called. “Calm down.”
But it was too late. A black and purple butterfly already came flying down. It went inside of the book Lyon was holding. The butterfly outline appeared over his eyes.
“Your favorite holiday and your culture insulted all at once,” Hawkmoth says to him. “Hocus Pocus, I am giving you the power to right this wrong. All I ask is for the miraculous of the ladybug and black cat in return.”
“I will show this liar some real magic,” Lyon said, transforming.
“What the hell,” Vallia gasped, backing away.
Lyon had changed into an almost male version of Winifred Sanderson. He was in a mostly green outfit with a green leather vest and pants with black leather boots that matched the black silk shirt under the vest. He also wore a long and shiny green cloak with a hood. He was still holding the book.
“Is it wrong that he actually looks hot in that outfit,” Adrien let slip, then instantly covered his mouth.
“Okay, we will come back to Adrien’s crush later,” Marinette stated. “For now, let’s run.”
Adrien immediately rushed forward and grabbed Vallia.
“Adrien,” Vallia was confused and worried. “What’s going on? What happened to Lyon?”
“Hawmoth is a terrorist here in Paris,” Adrien gave a quick explaination. “He takes advantage of negative emotions to turn normal people into his mind controlled villains.”
“Someone is mind controlling my brother,” Vallia was pissed. “When I get my hands on him, Hades will look like a puppy in comparison.”
“Maybe later, but we all need to hide so that Ladybug and Cat Noir can save your brother,” Adrien said.
Hocus Pocus then opened his book. He smirked as it glowed.
“Wicked ways beneath the skin, let all who taste it now join in,” he cast.
(Reference to Descendants 2.)
Out of the book came magical glowing chocolates. They all shot around the school and into the mouths of multiple people. It forced them to eat the magical treats, including Vallia, Nathaniel, Marc, and Kagami. Music then started playing out of nowhere as Hocus Pocus smirked again.
“Oh crud,” Adrien swore, running away along with the few students and staff that managed to avoid the chocolates.
He transformed and was soon on the roof of the school. Ladybug soon joined him. But they were shocked that the school was now in a full-blown musical moment. Hocus Pocus took “center stage” with Vallia and Kagami as his main back-up singers.
“I put a spell on you And now you're mine You can't stop the things I do I ain't lyin'.”
“It's been three hundred years Right down to the day Now the witch is back And there's hell to pay.”
“I put a spell on you And now you're mine!”
Hocus Pocus seemed to have used the chocolates like mind control treats. Everyone that eaten one had was now dancing around the courtyard in very Halloween-like manors. Some even seemed to be doing Micheal Jackson’s Thriller moves.
Alya and Lila, who had not gotten chocolates, were not allowed to leave as the dancers forced them to stay in the courtyard.
“What the heck in going on,” Ladybug was so confused.
“I guess whatever movie his akuma form is based off of had a musical number in it,” Cat Noir guessed.
“I put a spell on you And now you're gone (Gone, gone, gone, so long!) My whammy fell on you And it was strong (So strong, so strong, so strong!)”
“Your wretched little lives Have all been cursed 'Cause of all the witches working I'm the worst.”
“I put a spell on you And now you're mine.”
Hocus Pocus walked around the courtyard as he sung, Vallia and Kagami making amazing back-up singers. Alya and Lila still looked terrified even with the catchy song playing around them.
“Even as a back-up singer, who would have thought that Kagami could sing,” Ladybug said.
“Yeah, no kidding,” Cat Noir agreed.
“(Watch out! Watch out! Watch out! Watch out! She ain’t lyin’)”
“If you don't believe, You better get superstitious.”
“I put a spell on you... I put a spell on you...”
“Ah say into pi, alpha maybe upendi!”
“Ah say into pi, alpha maybe upendi!”
“In comma-coriyama"
“In comma-coriyama”
"Hey hi, say bye-bye-i-i-i-i-i-i-i"
"Bye, bye"
The song ended with a pose from Hocus Pocus and his two back-up singers. He still had his menacing smirk on his face.
“I think it’s time our little liar had her own spell placed ob her,” Hocus Pocus stated. “Like... a truth spell, perhaps.”
Let’s just say that the heroes were petty and decided to let the liar’s kingdom fall before defeating the akuma. And Adrien was certainly glad to have his friend back and a really cool book from their favorite Halloween movie. He just wished that the name of the movie would stop slipping his mind. Oh well, gives him an excuse to talk with Lyon more.

March 2013.
Any doctor would cry if they visited SHIELD; the caffeine and alcohol intake of pretty much every worker there would way exceed a dose construed to be healthy. Mind you, if you asked any agent whether they’d give up coffee or alcohol, they’d say alcohol in a heartbeat.
Well, most of them.
Katie couldn’t imagine surviving without an ice cold beer on a hot summer’s day, but she also didn’t function until she had her morning cup of Joe. It was a tough choice to make.
Not today though, she needed coffee. And lots of it. After ‘going rogue’ to chase the Mandarin with her brother, month’s later Fury was still pissed and as such was basically giving her the most boring thing he could think of- working through piles of mission reports to analyse and cross reference with others to pick up on common threads .To be honest, she didn’t mind it too much. After the excitement of the festive period she had welcomed a relatively quiet return to work, and didn’t particularly give a shit what Fury thought about her either.
She circling a part of the hard copy of the report she was working on with highlighter pen, before glancing back at her computer screen to cut and paste it into the Scrapbook App she used to trace trends with, letting out a groan. Who was she kidding? Desk duty sucked ass.
*****
Steve’s morning wasn’t going much better.
Whilst he wasn’t desk bound, after a particularly gruelling Ops Training session during which one of the newest kids suffered a broken nose after colliding painfully with a stray shock baton, he was almost wishing he was. Following a quick debrief, he checked his schedule on his phone and found he was free now for the rest of the day so he showered and headed up to find Katie. He found her in her office, paper in her hand as she stared at her computer screen, eyes narrowed. Steve watched her for a moment, taking in the way her nose crinkled as she read something, her bottom lip being dragged under her top teeth as she continued her work, completely unaware he was there. With a groan she dropped the notes she’d been holding to the desk and ran her hand through her dark hair.
Steve felt he was interrupting something, even though he knew he wasn’t, but he also didn’t want to appear like he’d been watching her either, which he totally had. So he gave a little cough and, as she turned round, her pretty face cracking into a smile which he returned.
“Hey! How was training?”
“Don’t ask.” He let out a snort.
“That bad huh?”
“In a fashion.” He nodded, leaning on the door frame. “You had lunch?”
“Nope.”
“Wanna come get some?”
She nodded instantly “God yes. Can we get FroYo after?”
“Yeah but don’t let me pile it with all that crap this time!” he shot her his best playfully disapproving look as he remembered his first trip the Frozen Yoghurt stall. He had loaded his with all sorts of different things and the result had been beyond foul.
Katie gave a laugh and picked up her jacket, shrugging it on. Standing up straight, he moved to allow her to step through the door and followed her to the elevator.
“Stick to chocolate chip, mint and cookie dough.” She said, stepping into it. “Trust me.”
They strode across the foyer and into the early spring sun. Katie pulled her jacket tighter around herself as they crossed the street, shivering a little in the cool breeze.
“How are you just wearing a shirt?” she looked at Steve as he fell into step besides her, making sure he was on the side nearest the road. He noticed that she’d long since given up chiding him on this old fashioned habit after he had revealed it was something he used to do for his mom too, and Bucky’s younger sister. In fact, today, he swore he saw something that looked like a soft smile flicker on her lips when he positioned himself on her left, but as quick as he noticed it, it was gone.
“It’s not too bad.” He grinned. “I’ve been through worse.” He opened the door to the Deli for her and followed her in as they took their place in the queue. After a moment or two he became aware that she was looking at him.
“What?” he asked, turning to her exasperatedly. Katie couldn’t help but grin, she enjoyed winding the usually mild mannered man up
“I’m trying to imagine how you would look with a beard. And with shorter hair.” she mused, causing the Captain to roll his eyes.
“Not gonna happen.”
“What the hair cut or the beard?”
“Neither.”
“Spoil sport.”
“Captain America doesn’t have a beard.” he shook his head.
“No but, Steve Rogers could…”
She was impossible, but Steve couldn’t help but want to laugh. This playfulness was the thing that he enjoyed the most, how she could just treat him like any other punk she knew.
“Did anyone ever tell you you’re exhausting?” he rolled his eyes, a smirk playing on his face as she stepped forward in the queue.
“Yeah, you.” she spun round to face him, grinning “Several times. But you still come back for more.”
“Well I have the distinct impression if I didn’t you’d hunt me down anyway”
They ordered and ate their lunch, Steve filling her in on the ops drill and after Fro-Yo they made arrangements to slob out that evening at his with a film. They walked back to the Triskellion where Katie headed back to her office to continue sifting through the Mount Everest of reports she had to do. As with anything, once she got the bit between her teeth, she completely zoned out. It was only when she heard a gabble of voices all bidding each other goodbye that she looked up from her work. It was dark outside, and past six.
“Shit.” she groaned as the realisation washed over her. She was supposed to be at Steve’s for half past. She clicked to save her work whilst calling him at the same time, phone sandwiched between her cheek and shoulder.
“So…I’m running late.” She apologised the instant he answered. He chuckled.
“I thought that you said the one good thing about being confined to desk duties was that you set the hours.”
“Yeah, well I got caught up in something, but I’m leaving now. Do you want me to grab pizza on the way?”
“Sounds good, not Chicago Style though. I’m hankering for a proper piece of pie.”
“God you’re such a New Yorker.” She rolled her eyes.
“You say it like it’s a bad thing.” His voice took on a mock hurt tone and she could imagine him pouting on the other end of the phone.
“Hmmm, I’m undecided. Right, I’m leaving now. See you soon.”
“Drive safe.”
“What are you my dad?” she snorted at his stern instruction.
“Old enough to be.” he shot back.
“Touche.” she sniggered, cutting the call
*******
“Boring New York style for Mr S Rogers…” she spoke into the intercom at the main door to Steve’s apartment complex and he buzzed her in. By the time she’d climbed the stairs to his floor he was waiting, leaning on the door frame.
“Bout time.” He muttered, taking the boxes off her “Was about to send a search party.”
“Mario’s was packed.” Katie said, kicking off her sneakers and heading straight through to his kitchen to grab a beer out of his fridge without waiting for him to offer, knowing he wouldn’t. He didn’t need to.
Steve headed into the living room, depositing the thee boxes on the coffee table before he sank onto the couch and reached straight in for one of the pepperoni slices. A few moments later Katie flopped down next to him, handing him a beer.
“What we ticking off the list tonight?” she asked.
“A Few Good Men.” he said, nodding at the TV where he had queued the movie up ready.
“Wait, did you manage to navigate that Android box all by yourself?” She looked at him and he sighed.
“I’m not completely useless ya know.”
“Jury’s out.” she teased, curling her legs up onto the sofa next to her.
They watched the movie. Steve got most of the references within it. He chuckled in the right places, and laughed out loud when Katie was unable to stop herself uttering the immortal line You can’t handle the truth. When the credits began to roll,  Katie unfolded herself from where she had been sat and they launched into Steve’s favourite part of Movie Nights- the post film analysis.
“Who was the guy who played the colonel, Jessup?” he looked at her.
“Jack Nicholson. Amazing actor. He’s in a few on your list.”
“He was good. And I know he was supposed to be the good guy so to speak but Kaffee annoyed me a little. He was so arrogant.”
“He reminds me of Tony” Katie sniggered.
“Well, I didn’t want to say anything” Steve gave a little smirk and Katie shrugged.
“I get what you mean though. He is an ass, and it pisses me off a little the romance angle they take with him and Galloway. I mean, she’s portrayed as this strong woman, in the male dominated military woman and they still have to go there.”
“It does seem to be a tried and tested format.” Steve nodded, leaning back against the cushions on his couch “Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy wins girl over…even the movies I saw back in before I took a sub-zero nap were the same.”
“I suppose it appeals to the hopeless romantic in all of us.” Katie shrugged.
They continued to chat for a bit longer until Katie glanced at her watch, and seeing the time, decided to call it a night. Steve walked her down to her car, he always did without fail, another thing she had given up chiding him for and when he came back upstairs and got in the shower, he found himself straying back to the first time he had seen her, the minute she had stepped into the light in the boxing gym and he’d found himself looking into the greenest eyes he had ever seen in his life.
The more he stood there in the stream of hot water, thinking about her, the more he started to feel something…well…different. And he couldn’t put his finger on it. Was it that he found her attractive? Well of course he did. To be honest, he reckoned you’d have to be blind not to. And if he was totally honest, since he’d seen her the first time in that little boxing gym in New York he had noticed how pretty she was. She had the figure of the stars of his time. Hour glass waist, brunette hair, shapely ass and legs and quite large breasts considering she was so slim. But what did it for him were her eyes. Deep, sparkling emeralds that he could lose himself in quite happily. And that smile, that fucking smile that could make him stop in his tracks when she flashed it.
But it was more than just that, she was…well…just Katie.
It was strange, really, she reminded him so much of Peggy in some ways, but in others she was so different. Both were vivacious, smart, strong willed and beautiful. But where Peggy had been harsh, after a military upbringing, Katie had a softer edge to her. She was still ferocious at times, but she was a people person, and somehow knew exactly how to explain and understand what he was trying to say even when he struggled to himself. She made him feel at ease. With that in mind it wasn’t surprising they had grown so close. He could trust her and knew that she would do anything for him because she was a good person. And she made it so easy to be around, he didn’t feel a shred of awkwardness around her.
He hadn’t thought he’d ever find himself a friend he could be as honest and open with again, one he would happily lay his life on the line for, not just out of a sense of duty but out of a sense of love and friendship.
Who you trying to kid, Rogers?
He knew his feelings went deeper than that. All those times he’d felt irritation at other men looking at her or touching her, all those times he’d looked at her and just wanted to smile because she was just her… the fear he had felt when he had known she was off chasing the Mandarin and he wasn’t able to help…none of that was anything to do with mere friendship.
He leaned his forehead against the tiles of the shower cubicle and groaned. He was crushing on his best friend.
He was so fucked. *******
Katie’s desk arrest didn’t last much longer. Two weeks later she was catapulted back into the field, on what was supposed to be a simple op, simple by SHIELD standards, anyway. They had a request from the Cuban government – all very hush, hush, of course –to take down a drug lord who ran a cartel SHIELD had tangled with last year.
Katie, in her role as Mission Analyst, read the files and all the intel, pulled together a briefing and delivered it, answering questions that came her way from the team and then handed over to Steve when it was his turn to take the floor. He started issuing out his orders, and informed everyone that the three newest recruits would be joining them as it would be a fairly straight forward op to ease them into.
And it had been, for the most part, until one of those new recruits, Jack Adams, had frozen mid fire fight and as a consequence he’d taken three bullets to the chest. Which shouldn’t have been an issue given the armour they all wore. But when the man failed to get up, Katie knew there was something very, very wrong.
“Adams is down!” she loudly spoke into her radio as she took aim at the hostile responsible. As soon as she was sure the round she had let off had hit her target, she broke cover to get to Adams, as she was closest to him. She skidded to the floor, pressing her hand to his chest and her other reached to his face, turning it to look at her.
“I got you, Adams, look at me.” she urged gently, her hand warm, wet and slick with the young man’s blood. Steve dropped besides her and she turned to face him.
“Armour piercing rounds.” She shook her head. “Steve, I can’t stop the bleeding.” Her tone left the Captain in no doubt as to how worried she was and he looked around frantically for help.
“Medic, NOW! We need emergency evac…”
“Stay with us, Jack.” Katie reached into her belt and retrieved a tab of morphine as he young man’s hand gripped her other whilst she administered the pain relief.
“Son, you’re gonna be fine.” Steve spoke and Adams’ horrified eyes turned to Steve. The soldier swallowed, fighting to keep his face calm. He’d seen that expression so many times on the battle field, the one that told him the man who lay injured knew he was injured beyond repair, that there was nothing to be done for him. But this was now seventy years into the future, medical science had worked so many wonders since then, they had to be able to do something, right?
“RUMLOW WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT MEDIC?” Katie screamed, her tone frantic.
“Still got hostiles on us!” Rumlow replied over the coms. “Evans has taken four down but they’re approaching from the right! We need to cover the medics in and now you’re down there…”
Steve instantly looked round before he looked back at Katie “We’ll have to take him ourselves”
She bit her lip, looking at the young man, then up to Steve again. Everything in their training told them not to move casualties, but Steve knew if they stayed here he was going to bleed out. Katie seemed to come to the same conclusion and she nodded.
“Alright. Brock, we’re coming to you. Have the medics prep the bay on the jet.. Evans, we need top cover.”
“Roger, Cap…”
“Jack, we’re gonna move you now.” Katie looked at him, her voice calm and level as besides her, Steve moved to take the injured man into a lift over his shoulder. Once he had him positioned, he gave a small jerk of his head and Katie picked up his shield in one hand, and her pistol in the other as they broke cover, sprinting across the front of the industrial yard towards the jet. In the corner of his eye, Steve spotted two hostiles moving but before he could shout a warning, Katie had fired off two shots, the thumps and lack of returning fire meaning each bullet had hit its target. Soon they were joined by Rumlow and Rollins who flanked them up the ramp where Katie dropped Steve’s shield to the floor with a clang and offered her hand back to Adams as Steve placed him gently on the stretcher.
“It’s gonna be ok.” Katie soothed him as the medics bustled around, her eyes glancing up every so often to watch what they were doing.
“Can you tell my mom I love her and, and my dad.” Adams was mumbling now and Katie shook her head.
“You can tell them yourself.” She told him fiercely. “You’ll be fine, I promise.”
“We’re locked down outside, local authorities are handling it now.” Rumlow informed Steve who had stepped back from where Katie was knelt by the injured man. “How is he?”
Steve turned to Rumlow, shaking his head sadly. “Not good. He lost a lot of blood.”
At that point Katie suddenly drew back slightly, looking at the hand held in hers, before she glanced at the medic who was sadly shaking his head. Katie’s shoulders slumped as her eyes closed, face screwing up into a pained expression and Steve pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and middle finger as he realised that the young man had lost his final fight.
“Shit.” Rumlow muttered.
“Radio base” Steve turned to Rumlow his voice soft “Let’s get him home.”
*******
Writing mission reports wasn’t Katie’s favourite thing to do, but this one was awful. So she’d treated it like ripping off a band aid, and after a horrific night’s sleep, she’d been at the Triskelion early to get it done. As a result it was little after ten am, she was done for the day and was about to head home until she heard a familiar voice.
“Eat me…eat me…” The voice was accompanied by a bag from her favourite bakery, which was hovering in the space between the door to the office and the frame, before Clint Barton’s head poked round the side, a grin plastered on his face.
“Hey!” She beamed at her friend as he dropped a cup holder containing two coffees and the bag onto her desk before taking a seat, scooting the wheeled chair over the floor towards her.
“Heard you had a rough time of it yesterday so I brought donuts and almond croissants. And coffee.”
“Hawkeye, you are a godsend.” Katie smiled, taking a large drink and leaning back, closing her eyes.
“That the first time you’ve lost a man on a mission?” Clint asked.
“Other than Coulson.” she shrugged. “Shit, Adams was twenty-three Clint. He had his whole life ahead of him.”
Clint watched as she rubbed at her temple before reaching into the bag and pulling out an almond croissant. She couldn’t remember when she had last eaten, it must have at least been before the mission.
“How’s Cap taken it?”
“On the outside he seems okay, but I know he blames himself. Keeps saying he shouldn’t have taken him.” Katie shrugged “He’s gone with Fury to see Adams’ parents. Rather him than me.”
“This job is hard.” Clint said after a moment or two pause. “We fight to keep everyone safe, but y’know, sometimes not everyone makes it. Thing is, if we can’t find a way to deal with that, then maybe next time no one gets saved at all.”
“You mean like Collateral damage?” she snorted, shaking her head.
“No, I mean that everyone one of us that are out in the field know the risks Nova, hell last year 7 of us took on a horde of Aliens in New York. For hours we fought them, and did any of us give a second thought to our own safety? No, because that’s what we do.”
His words made sense. She knew they did, but that didn’t stop the feeling in her stomach that if she had done her research more, maybe she could have spotted something that would have told them about the armour piercing rounds.
*******
Adams’ parents already knew he was dead. Fury had the local authorities call ahead, common practice now, but still, Steve found himself sat on their couch, talking, informing them all about their son’s last moments. They hadn’t shouted, hadn’t screamed or blamed him. Instead, they’d thanked him for what he had done and for bringing him back so they could hold a proper burial.
By the time he got back to base, he was exhausted.
“Here.” Fury handed him a glass of scotch from the bottle he had pulled out of his desk. Steve took it, dropping onto one of the sofas at the side of the large office, Fury settling into the other. Steve knew the drink couldn’t get him drunk, but he liked the momentary buzz he got that lasted all of sixty seconds post sip, and the comforting burn it gave when he swallowed.
The pair of them sat in silence for a few moments before Fury sat forward, his eye fixed on Steve.
“Ever done that before, a death message?” he asked.
“Can’t say I have. Wasn’t really my job back in the day.” Steve shrugged, undoing his tie and popping the top button of his dress shirt.
“Worst part of the job. Doesn’t matter how many times you do it, never gets any easier.” Fury ran his hand over his face, and it struck Steve how tired his boss actually looked.
“Yeah, it isn’t exactly up there with my favourite thing to do.” Steve rolled his tie up and shoved it into the pocket of his old Army uniform pants.
“How’s Nova?” Fury asked.
“She’s upset.” Steve sighed “But she’s strong, she’ll be okay. I’m gonna head over and see how she is later.”
“You two spend a lot of time together outside of work.” Fury commented, innocently enough but there was something in his tone, something that was almost good natured accusation.
“Not a problem is it, Sir?” Steve asked, keeping his face straight.
“No, not at all.” Fury said “Why do you think I partnered you up in the first place? She’s a people person…”
“She’s a good friend.” Steve nodded “We get on.”
“Glad to hear it.” Fury nodded. There was another moment’s pause before he spoke again. “There’s going to be a debrief with the Secretary of Defense tomorrow.”
Steve sighed “If they’re looking to blame someone, the buck stops with me. I should never have taken the kid.”
“Bullshit.” Fury said simply “I’ve read the reports. From what they say, he just froze.”
“He wasn’t experienced enough.”
“Taking risks is part of this job. It’s a dangerous gig.” Fury held his gaze. “It was a straight forward in and out job Captain. What happened was an accident. A tragic one, but an accident none the less. From the reports, neither you nor Stark could have done any more to save his life.”
Steve shrugged, the words were kind but didn’t help him feel any better.
Three glasses of scotch later, Steve shook the director’s hand and left the office, pulling out his phone. He didn’t want to appear like he was checking up on Katie, so he pinged her a text, dressing it up like it was him who needed to see her, which wasn’t a complete lie. He did. He was craving the normality she gave him.
Can I come over? I could do with seeing a friendly face
He read it a few times, before deciding it was casual enough before he sent it. The reply was almost instantaneous.
My door is always open for you. And I made Mac and Cheese. Plenty left.
He couldn’t help but smile. One of the best things about this new life was the food, and her Mac and Cheese was frankly his favourite thing to eat on the planet.
He changed into a pair of sweats and a hoody, hastily making his way to Katie’s penthouse and the smile she gave him when he walked into her place instantly made him feel at ease.
“Hey.” she crossed the space towards him and gave him a hug which he happily melted into, a hug they both needed.
“How did it go?” she asked, pulling away.
“As well as can be expected.” He sighed as he followed her into the kitchen, dropping into the stool on the other side of the breakfast bar. “His mom broke down but they didn’t shout or yell.”
Katie flipped the lid off a beer and handed it to him. He took it, with a nod of thanks and pulled a large swig before he rest his hands on the counter, staring at the bottle.
He was brooding and blaming himself, Katie could tell, so she gently lay her hand on his, reaching over the counter.
“It wasn’t your fault Steve.” she spoke softly and he looked at her.
God, she did that all the time, knew what he was thinking. It gave him the unnerving impression that sometimes she could read his mind.
“I should have spotted that shooter.” he shook his head.
“I’m the fucking mission analyst.” she sighed. “I knew from last time those guys were packing, if I’d done more research, maybe I would have found out about the armour piercing rounds.”
“You can’t seriously blame yourself?” Steve’s frowned.
“Why not?” she shrugged sadly. She’d been over it a million times in her head that day and had come to the same conclusion every time. She should have spotted something, dug further. “I didn’t do my job.”
“Yes, you did.” he implored, his eyes locking onto hers “Your report clearly set out the layout, the learning from previous missions…Adams was just too inexperienced, I should never have taken him.”
There was a pause as the microwave pinged and Katie turned to look at it.
“You know, Clint made a good point before.” she reached in for the plate and the smell of the food made his stomach grumble again as she continued “This job, it’s hard. We fight to keep people safe but not everyone makes it back all the time…and if we can’t learn to live with that then maybe next time no one gets saved.”
“It feels like trading lives.” He took a deep breath as she placed the plate down in front of him “It’s just wrong.”
“I know.” She said, handing him some cutlery and sat down next to him.
“You eaten?” he asked, looking at her, suddenly aware she didn’t have a plate. She nodded.
“Couldn’t have waited until now, I’d have starved to death.” she said, shrugging.
“Hardly.” he replied, mouth full, instantly realising he had said the wrong thing as she narrowed her eyes at him.
“Is that a fat joke?” she asked, making him roll his eyes as he swallowed. That hadn’t been it at all, he was referring to the fact that she never actually stopped eating, despite her tiny frame she gave him a run for his money.
“No, that’s not what I meant. You’re tiny.” he said, almost choking on his food through his protests.
“So now you’re making short jokes?” She shot back. Steve looked at her, dismayed she thought he was being mean to her but then he spotted the look in her eyes and rolled his own.
“Punk.”
“Jerk” she shot back.
It was the perfect way to escape the trauma and stress of the last few days. Once they had finished eating the two of them flopped down on her large L shape sofa, Steve’s legs extended along one side of the L shape, her legs tucked underneath her as she leaned against his shoulder. He couldn’t help but notice the smell of her shampoo…apple, he thought, along with her perfume. Her proximity was making his head buzz but he wasn’t about to move her, the contact was comforting. And it clearly was for her too as about an hour or so into the film- the first in the Lord of The Rings trilogy- he felt her head growing heavy. He glanced down and saw that her eyes were closed and, as he watched, her head slipped slightly. He shifted so that he could catch her gently, and grabbed a cushion from behind him, placing it against his leg. He manoeuvred her head so that she was lay down, gently brushing her hair off her face. She stirred slightly, snuggling down further into the cushion as he absentmindedly rubbed between her shoulder blades as her breathing grew gentle and even.
Steve stayed like that, engrossed in the film right to the end, surprisingly. He had enjoyed it. Katie hadn’t woken up, and he looked down debating whether or not to wake her or simply carry her through to her bedroom. In the end he decided to do neither, instead he reached for the remote as he sifted through to find something else to watch. He didn’t want to leave just yet, he was too comfy and too at ease. Picking one of his favourites, Casablanca, he settled down, getting himself comfy as he immersed himself in the familiar world of Rick’s Café Americain. At one point he felt his eyes growing heavy and he lay his head back, deciding to rest them for just a little while…
**** Katie was jolted awake, quite violently, and as she jerked into an upright position she saw exactly why. Steve was thrashing in his sleep, his face contorted in horror, small murmurs and whimpers slipping from his plump lips. She placed both her hands on his shoulder and shook him. Softly at first, then a bit stronger, trying to rouse him.
“Steve…” she gave him a harsher shake and his eyes flew open, wide in panic and she reached up to cup his face in her hands. “Hey, it’s okay. It was just a dream.”
Her soft voice filled Steve’s senses and, as he realised where he was and whose eyes were looking at him, he took a shaky breath and lay his head back.
Damned it, he’d fallen asleep and had a nightmare. On her sofa.
“Sorry,” he said, his voice croaky, “I err…”
“Don’t apologise, it’s fine.” Katie shook her head gently “I’ll get you a glass of water.”
Whilst she was gone he leaned forward, swinging his legs off the couch so his feet touched the floor, wiping his clammy head with his hands, the memory still flashing through his dream.
Cold air was blasting his hair back…there was a hole in the side of the train…then a flash of light and Bucky flew straight through the hole. “BUCKY…” he yelled, grabbing onto the side of the train, the bar in one hand as he stretched to reach his friend with the other.
“Steve…” The voice was louder, but not loud enough. No, he had to get to Bucky…
But he was gone, Steve was grasping at nothing but air.
Just a dream, Katie had said. It was anything but…
She appeared back in the room with a glass of water and he thanked her as she passed it to him. He took a large gulp, swallowing and was relieved when his breathing began returning to normal.
“You ok?” she asked, kindly as her hand gently knotted into his, her concern evident.
“Yeah, just a nightmare.” he nodded softly “I’ve not had one for a while.”
“Understandable with what’s happened. Wanna tell me what it was about?”
“It was Bucky.” he swallowed thickly “I was replaying the moment he fell. The moment he plummeted to his death from that Hydra train and I didn’t save him.”
Katie stayed silent for a moment before her hand curled round Steve’s shoulder and she pulled him to her, causing him to lay his head on her shoulder. “You know it wasn’t your fault.”
“I should have done more” The guilt ate Steve up every day, that he had survived. Why had he deserved that any more than Bucky?
“How?” she said again. “How could you have done anymore?”
"I should have gone after him.” he said quietly.
“What would’ve changed if you had?” Katie asked. “There’s no way he could have survived that fall.”
“He wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for me.“ He replied, "I should have gone after him, brought him home, done something.”
Katie remained quiet, her hand gently running through his hair which was nice, far too nice. He took a deep breath and sat up moving away from her touch.
"What time is it?”
“Nearly six in the morning” Katie glanced at her watch.
“You’re kidding?” Steve snorted.
“Nope. You want some coffee?” she stood up, stretching her arms above her head.
“Yeah if that’s ok.” he replied, following her to the kitchen. From her body language he could tell she was rolling her eyes, even if she wasn’t facing him.
“I don’t know if your Ma ever told you, but it’s rude to run out on a girl after you spend the night with her.”
“And as you know, I’m useless with women.” he sat down at the barstool on the breakfast bar. He watched her, but he didn’t say anything as she bustled about, throwing some bread in the toaster and then went to the fridge for the butter, marmalade and jam, sliding them onto the island. At that point Steve held his hands up.
“You don’t have to-” he started to say, but she silenced him with a glare, similar to the ones Peggy used to give him, the look that could stop him in his tracks it was that stern.
“Shut up.” she poured them both a cup of the coffee before adding milk and a spoon of sugar to each, passing one to him. The bread popped up from the toaster, and she put it on a plate before sliding it over to him and adding more bread to the machine.
His stomach rumbled and he gave in, smearing butter over his toast. He eyed the jam curiously. He’d had marmalade before but…
He looked at Katie and she nodded. “It’s good.”
So he added some, and after a bite he concluded she was right, and nodded in agreement. Once the next round of toast was done she sat next to him.
“So, when did I fall asleep.” she asked, swallowing her food.
“About an hour into the film.”
She shook her head “What an ass…”
“It wasn’t a problem.” He replied honestly as he took a bite of his breakfast. “To be honest I enjoyed it.”
“What, me drooling on your leg?”
He swallowed, his eyes wide “I meant the film.”
“I know.” she smirked.

Cussing like a sailor, you trudge towards the man, who's catching his breath by the sidewalk. His glance instantly darts to your face, about to say something. You cut him short, though, too disturbed by the fear that still clouds your every action.
“We have to leave while we can. Like right now.”
“H-how do you know I’m not infected?”, he asks, abruptly realizing something even more critical. "How do I know you are not infected?"
He backs away, then, gorgeous features closing off in hesitance. While he stares at you, you think his voice is much, much more angelic than you thought. It drips with uncertainty but is beautiful enough to make you forget how to speak for a minute.
"Uhm”, you clear your throat, now looking for your weapons. It's a good attempt at escaping his piercing eyes, but it dawns on you. He has quite literally no reasons to agree with what you were planning.
"I'm immune, actually. My DNA has some mutation that I honestly cannot explain that well. You", you pause, scanning his defensive form before going back to putting away your knives. "You are definitely clean. It's been over 15 minutes since I arrived: no walker bit you or you would have, at least, screamed. If by some chance it happened and I was not aware of it, I would have seen it in your eyes by now. It's the first part of the process", you grimace.
The guy stays silent while you speak, taking everything you say into consideration. You find it makes sense to him if his relaxed posture is anything to go by.
Finishing up with your arrows, you promptly head back to where you came from, assuming your companion is close behind.
“Wait!”, he trots, halting in front of you. “I… I don’t think I can go with you.”
You could say it's the dumbest thing you have ever heard, but your yell from earlier begs to differ.
“I can see you don't trust me, and you have no reasons to, but this is how rescue missions go. I see someone in danger, I do my best to get them away, and we go to my settlement, where we can hopefully be stronger by numbers. We can get there if we run." Your voice is borderline dull, almost like you have made that same speech 500 times in the past few days. It would have made him laugh, under different circumstances. Yet, he plainly breathes, running a grimy hand through his hair.
“It’s not that”, he peers around, lost. “I came to the pharmacy for medical supplies for one boy in my own settlement. He needs them as soon as possible, or I’m not sure I’ll be able to help him at all. Besides”, he tentatively lifts your dominant arm by the sleeve of your jacket, careful not to touch you. “We should clean that and put some bandages around it, even if I don’t have the time to stitch it up.”
You are not sure what part of his speech you should pay attention to first.
“You have a settlement?” The question bursts its way out of your mouth before you can think better, but he doesn't seem to mind. Lips curling into a proud smile, he stuffs his hands into the pockets of his hoodie.
“Yeah, I’m currently the father of 6 children from the college I used to attend”, he snorts.
“That’s amazing! I’ve been mapping this area for some weeks now, and I never found anyone”, you smile. “I’m currently the parent of”, stopping, you count the names in your not-chewed fingers. “16 children? Around that. I swear there's a new name every time we make the roll call."
Studying his kind expression, warm under the red sunlight, you feel as if you could talk to him for hours. I'd never get bored. Your situation seems small, squeezed all the way in the back of your mind. It's clearly much less important than your attractive stranger.
Gasping quietly in realization, he sobers up. He pulls you by your jacket once more, just as delicately, and keeps you close.
“Listen, I understand you have people to take care of, but you said you could get there in time if you run. My boys are not too far from here. I think it would be safer for you to come with me for now, at least wait until morning. Otherwise", he gulps, "we will both be in more danger."
You reflect his words guardedly. You are painfully aware that the clock is ticking and each second spent here makes it a bit worse. When the sun goes down is when things get seriously nasty. The night would swallow you whole before you could get to the campus, and then your eyes would be useless. You wouldn't be able to see any walkers or even traps you came across. You'd be a sitting duck.
Sighing, you know your decision has been made.
I can only hope Taeyong forgives me for this.
With a curt nod, your free hand gestures for him to lead the way. He seems awed by how fast you agreed but decides against mentioning it. Instead, he gives you a gracious smile and goes on. He stands just past the crushed glass, where you can now see a coffee-coloured messenger bag on the once-white floor. Something seems to be fidgeting inside of it, and you stiffen.
Before you can ask about it, he drops your wrist. Picking up the bag gently, he cradles it to his chest and looks at the inside softly. He coos, speaking in a language you know to be Mandarin. That’s when it pushes out—the little, furry snout of a puppy, licking his hand and whimpering.
It's like your systems just crashed.
“You have a dog in your bag?”
Laughing briefly, he turns to you again. Cosy inside of the leather is a tiny Beagle, looking at you with bright eyes. You can't help but think it's ridiculously adorable.
“Well, not at all times. I found her wandering around here, but one of her ears was bleeding and she’s limping”, his voice lowers to a whisper, watching her with concern. “One of my boys is a vet student. I thought maybe we could help her.”
Choosing not to question it, you simply nod. The bleeding ear would explain why she stayed here even with the noise. Her hearing must be quite damaged.
“And I’m assuming the medicine or whatever you needed is also in there?”
He's serious once again, reminded of the primary reason for his trip.
“Yes, I placed it in separate pockets and smaller bags. We are good to go.”
A breeze swiftly races inside the barely lit building. It’s a warning of how fast the twilight is coming, and he takes it. His quick steps sound first, light on the ground, and he checks to see if you are coming. Understanding of his rush, you jog along.
“I didn’t forget about your hand, by the way. I know a safe spot close to here where we can stop for me to treat it.”
Staring at his broad shoulders, your breathing hitches as the throbbing in your fingers come back. Treatment would be useful before you have to amputate it, but...
“Do you know how to do that? Not to doubt your capacities or anything, but I can just clean it with some water later.”
Running to come up to his side, he playfully eyes you. He is moving so naturally along the streets you imagine he must know this route well.
“I am a med student. Uh, was, I guess.”
His striking traits are highlighted by the blue hour, hues of periwinkle ghosting over his nose, forehead, cheekbones and lips. He chuckles airily, and you are conscious of how surprised you must look.
“A med student. That’s pretty helpful, huh? I’m sure you care very well for your friends."
From the corner of your eye, you see pink spread over his face. He glances up to the sky, lost in his own head.
“I try to. Our youngest has just turned 20. I can’t imagine what it must be like to go through this at that age.”
You hum.
“I know how you feel. I’m watching over an 18-year-old”, sighing, you think back to the freshman dance student at the settlement. You pray he doesn't feel your absence so strongly, familiar to his tendency to cry.
Comfort sparks in the way your companion bumps his shoulders into yours, drawing you out of foggy thoughts. When your heart suddenly tries to break free from your ribcage, you swallow dry. Could I not find a worse moment to develop a crush?
Beating yourself over your feelings, you travel silently, sometimes admiring the starry skies. It feels nice to be like this, almost… at peace. Funny how you can feel that way around someone you barely know while touring a town full of bloodthirsty beasts.
“Ah”, he breaks the silence awkwardly. “I still don’t know your name.”
You wince at that, realizing you were forgetting about it. It's like I've known him for ages.
“Sorry. I’m Y/N”, your voice is soft, rivalling the autumn winds.
“Y/N... That’s a beautiful name”, he compliments, eyes finding yours. “You can call me Kun.”
You say his name out loud, testing it, and giggle. It feels nice in your lips.
---
The trip to the first hiding spot was fast, just a matter of minutes cruising under the starlight. The place is a dainty, small wooden cabin, right at the foot of the mountains that surround the city. All around you are bushes and fireflies, that blink over stray pieces of cars. How they got to here, in the forest, is a mystery to you, but then again, a lot of things do not make sense anymore. It's simpler to overlook it and get inside, plopping down on a rusty chair as Kun grabs a flashlight from a corner.
His hands work quickly, and with confidence, like medicine is in his blood. It's impressive, but, most of all, painless. His touch is even gentler than Tyong’s and feels warm against your cool skin. A tiny smile plays on your lips the entire time, watching him and the sleeping puppy discreetly.
After that, your wounded hand is snug against the white bandages and the sting lessened. You feel like you could go on for miles, but Kun only laughs and tells you to calm down. No way you two are running uphill to his house.
“Wait, you mean you guys live… up there?”, you point, and he follows your finger, contemplating the towering trees of the forest nonchalantly.
Seeing your dubious expression makes his heart crack a little. He understands how intimidating it is: the dark, unknown forest. Who could guess what lurks between the twigs, spying on the few, brave souls that dare cross their territory?
“I know hiding from zombies in the woods sounds a bit weird, but I promise it’s safe. They have a hard time traversing the trees because they’re so closely set. Also”, he studies the grass beneath his feet, feeling a mix of shame and hesitance himself. “We might have planted a few landmines around the perimeter.”
The sound you make then is something between a wheeze and a gasp.
“How did you…?”
“I preferred to not question when Yukhei showed up with them”, he breathes, sounding like a tired father. “There’s a protected path we’ll follow, though!” He makes a face at how he saved the most important detail for last. I have no idea what is wrong with me today.
But, Kun thinks, secretly relishing on the way you shine under the moon, if you’re scared, I’ll hold your hand.
---
The journey to his house is more serene than you guessed. There are no walkers you perceive. It's almost like this place is completely cut off from the world, far away from real danger. Although maybe that is just Kun's effect on you. You have not failed to notice how tranquillity seems to flow out of him in waves, wordlessly comforting your wild heart. It's nothing like you have ever felt.
I met him two hours ago.
Once again shaking off your feelings, you try to focus on the other things that surround you. The crickets, the faint crunch of the grass and fallen leaves, an owl, how smooth his skin could feel under your fingertips...
Oh my god, you cringe.
As you steady yourself against the trunk of an oak, your shoulders finally loosen. Not too far ahead, you can see something that resembles a ski cabin, surrounded by barbed wire, and with orange light pouring from the windows. The path you walk on is surrounded by sharp wooden stakes from both sides, but the place still feels homier than the campus.
You don't notice your grin until he smiles back, taking your hand in his and continuing the walk. You remain quiet until the ground changes from grass, pebbles and mud to beaten earth, and you stand right outside the fence. It's far taller than you, with the metal glittering intimidatingly. If the landmines had not made you feel safe, this definitely has.
Kun, still grasping your hand delicately, surrounds the house with an attentive look. He searches for something and stops a few meters from where you were. It’s always simple to find—the crossing point—and he spins to face you.
“If you don’t mind holding the bag, I can cross over first and then help you. Is that okay?”, he asks, looking for approval in your eyes.
Warmth takes over your heart at his caring nature, knowing he could have just gotten in and expected you to not hurt yourself.
“Yeah, that’s fine.”
With no other words, you reach for the bag, and hug it against your chest, observing the sleeping dog in your arms. While you are distracted, Kun steps on the lower row of wire and carefully places his hands on the upper one, creating a space he can shimmy through.
He pays close attention to where the barbs were, but does it calmly, and gets to the other side with a small sigh. He then gestures to the bag, stepping on the wire once again, and passing it over with even more care than he had for himself.
The moment he takes the bag from you, you feel your fingers brushing. While you both pretend not to notice, the heat rushing to your cheeks speaks for itself. Neither one of you mention it.
Then, it's time for you to get in. You can admit you are a bit apprehensive. Kun’s frame is sturdier than yours, in general, and he was just fine, but the idea of sneaking through sharp thorns is not exactly exciting.
Kun seems to know what you feel, and gives you a sweet smile, hoping to calm your nerves. He places the bag on the ground gently, trying to keep the puppy asleep. The process, then, starts over.
One foot over the first wire, a hand on the upper one and the other stretched out for you to grab. The wind picks up abruptly, and you can't tell if you shiver from it or from the grip of his fingers on yours.
“No need to hurry”, Kun whispers, eyes trained on where your body is concerning the barbs. He, time or another, tells you to bend a little lower or higher, and pulls more at the cable. To your relief, though, all is well. After a minute of wiggling, you touch the other side of the fence and allow yourself to rest.
“You did good”, he praises, patting your hair kindly. You sort of feel like a kid, but maybe not in an unpleasant way.
Tardily letting the tiredness from the day catch up to you, your brain slows down, and your limbs ache. You had not noticed Kun was already up on his feet with the bag until a hand shows up before your eyes, a silent offer. You take it without a second thought, letting him pull you up.
From then on, your mind gave up on processing a lot of what you did. You were nearly sure you went up a row of stairs to a wooden deck, the floor squeaking under your boots. Your new friend still holds your hand securely, which you are thankful for when you trip on a loose board. His eyes examine you for a second, making sure you're alright before he turns to the door.
It is also made of wood but painted red and unyielding. Letting go of your fingers, he knocks 3 times, waits a couple seconds, and then 4 others. The house, so far still, erupts into hushed cheers and shouts. Kun can only shake his head, holding in a smile, and look up when the door flies open, candlelight spilling out. The slim figure that appears nearly throws himself in Kun’s arms, but freezes when he sees you and the bag.
“Y/N?!”
“Hendery?!”
“...You two know each other?”

Okay so I had a panic attack in a Costco today and had a really unexpected (but wonderful) reminder that the person I am with is The Right Person For Me and I wanted to share this stupidly long story.
So my SO has to get a couple immunizations updated, so he tempts me along with him to Costco with the promise of pizza. And look. Look. Costco stressed me the FUCK out before the pandemic, alright? Fuck that place and it's lawlessness and massive, impossible-to-drive carts and families that pull up with ALL 4.5 of their children, okay? Costco sucks. But I was... utterly unprepared for how much WORSE Costco is DURING A PANDEMIC. (Don't worry, I had an N95 under a tripple-layer cloth mask and I stripped out of my clothes as soon as I got home. I'm not taking any chances, pizza be DAMNED.)
You'd think the giant signs everywhere reminding people to keep 6ft from one another would do something to temper the Usual Pre-COVID madness of a Suburban Area Costco on a Saturday afternoon. You'd be fuckin' w r o n g. The aisles are still lawless. The families are still there. Hell, it's all families. Not a single child is wearing their masks correctly. Everyone is glaring at me. I'm sweating. I'm not okay. I am in EVERYONE'S way no matter what I do. I must have said "sorry" approximately 30 times in the span of 20 minutes. My arms are short. The carts are hard for me to maneuver. I'm trying to stay 6ft away from everyone and succeeding Not At All because all these impatient white women keep running up on me to snag some fuckin bananas and I'm TRYING. MY BEST!!!!! It is loud. There are humans everywhere. Im d yi ng .
I go to my SO at the pharmacy. I have all that I could ever desire from this nightmarish place. "I have to wait 30min," he says. What little remained of my sanity dissolved like wet tissue paper. Very logically, as I am firing on All Cylinders and at 110% Capacity, I decide to go put the freezer items back so they don't melt while we wait. The freezer section is on the entire opposite side of the store, a good two miles away. As I bend down to put the yakisoba back in the freezer, my purse slips off my shoulder and smacks me in the face. I come back to the pharmacy, almost definitely sweating visibly through my clothes at this point.
I cannot overstate how badly I want to go home. Navigating these crowds is like that scene in Finding Nemo where all the grey fish are crammed together in that big ass fishing net and are panicking and wriggling every which way trying to escape. I somehow end up with the books at one point??? I'm so stupid. Copies upon copies of Obama's memoir stare at me with open disappointment.
SO and I decide that I will check out with the groceries and chill in the car while he gets his immunization, because I am clearly Losing My Fucking Shit. We trek all the way back to the freezer section and reclaim the items I just put back. As we get in line to self checkout, I almost take out this man at the kneecaps with the cart. I'm so sorry, sir. I was Not Okay.
It is finally our turn. I'm so close. So close to the blissful quiet of the car.
"You need two of those," the gatekeeper of the self checkout says incomprehensibly, pointing at the big thing of muffins in my cart. She might as well have been speaking Mandarin at me. I did NOT understand. I thought the Costco police were coming.
"I'm sorry, say that again?" I am choking on my fucking brains.
"You can't just buy one pack of muffins. It's two for one. It's 'cheating the member' otherwise."
There are moments in life that just utterly break you, body and spirit. This was one of those moments.
There were literally tears in my eyes. I would pay actual money to know what this woman's impression of me was in this moment. I would p a y.
I turn around, almost bumping into about 3 people as I do. My SO follows me. We stop, ironically, by the giant packs of assorted nuts, which I am deathly allergic to.
"I cannot do this, I gotta go. I gotta go." SO takes one look at me and hands me the car keys.
Now once I am no longer about to vomit, I'm in a whole DIFFERENT spiral of Anxiety because I think, "oh god. He's so fucking mad at me, isn't he? He just wanted company and I fucked it up. I'm such a goddamn child." I text him NINE (9) TIMES. NINE TIMES.
Two minutes later he shows up at the car with all the groceries and holy fucking shit,,, he isn't mad at all.
I almost cried again just from the relief of it. He wasn't mad at me. He handled the situation when I had to bail. He went back, got that damn second pack of muffins, and checked out on his own. He brought the stuff out to the car, checked on me with a truly infinite amount of patience, went back in for his immunization, and came back out with pizza for the both of us.
The best partners are those that can step in when we need it most, without complaint. Even when we melt down over the stupidest shit.

Broken Harmony Pt28
Inspired by @ozmav Maribat AU
Master List 1   Master List 2    Prologue   Beginning   Previous   Next
“Mlle. Bourgeous.” Chloe and Marinette stopped talking when Bruce addressed her. She straightened back up, defaulting into her original demeanor. It was a front when she felt threatened, similar to his if he was honest.
“M. Wayne.” Her tone held wariness and Damian could tell she was expecting a less than warm welcome. He wasn’t sure if that was just because it was what she was used to or because she was expecting it from Bruce specifically. Marinette rubbed the girls back soothingly and he caught the confused look that passed between her parents.
“Would you like to join us for dinner?” No one expected that least of all Chloe. She physically recoiled and looked about ready to decline but Marinette spoke up first.
“I’d really like to catch up if you don’t have any other plans.” The poor girl looked like she’d woken up in an alternate dimension. Apparently that lost look moved Marinette’s parents enough for Sabine to go into mom mood. She walked up to Chloe and put an arm around her shoulders.
“We’d love for you to join us” Tom gave her an encouraging smile and she looked like her brain melted.
“Okay.” Before she could think about it or reconsider they were all seated in the dining room. She still looked extremely uncomfortable but didn’t appear to be ready to bolt anymore. She was situated between Sabine and Marinette and kept inching closer to the latter as if afraid Sabine might turn on her. Given what she’d said about being a bully he could understand why.
“So Marinette have you given any thought to what school you want to transfer to.” He watched his soulmate blink in surprise at the question before her cheeks turned pink.
“No actually. Between making your gifts and talking to the ‘not sisters’ there wasn’t a lot of time. Besides, I’d like to get to know Damian better first because I have a feeling he’ll go with whatever I want but I want it to be a school he actually likes too.”  The boys awed over her sweetness while Damian rolled his eyes before Dick hooked into the other thing she said.
“Wait what do you mean ‘not-sisters’?” Damian scowled before answering.
“Babs decided to hack into Marinette’s computer so she, Steph, and Cass could see her.” The boys erupted into complaints that the girls got to meet her first but Bruce just let out a sigh, running his hand down his face in annoyance. “I told them it was an unacceptable violation of privacy, and that holds for you lot as well.” He pinned each of his brothers with a glare, lingering on Tim.
“I feel insulted that you believe we would resort to such tactics.” Tim’s words were only met with another glare. Bruce stepped in before it could go further.
“Marinette is Damian’s soulmate. They will decide what safety measures to take and we will abide by them. They do not need our interference or meddling. It will also be up to Marinette to decide what she wishes to share with us.” He stared down each of the boys in turn but also lingered on Tim.
“Oh come on, you act like I’m the only one who does research. Besides you’re the one that asked me to clone her phone.”
“You did what?” Damian’s voice was soft but the other boys flinched. Bruce just gave a tired sigh.
“I figured there were things on it Marinette would want later so I had Tim clone it so we could give the actual phone to the police but she would still have everything. After what happened tonight I think we can all agree that giving them the only copy of that harassment is a bad idea.” There were nods and grumbling from around the table but Chloe turned to Marinette.
“What harassment?” His Angel’s cheeks flushed pink again.
“It’s really nothing. They were just getting out their frustration.”  Her words had the effect of a bomb going off. Denials were shouted from almost everyone present. Damian was fairly certain he heard Jason muttering about getting his guns while Sabine said something in Mandarin that almost made him blush. It was Tom that let out a piercing whistle to get everyone’s attention. His wife shot him a surprised look but the rest simply dropped their grumbling to a reasonable level.
“Sweetheart, Bruce showed us those messages before he left last night. That’s not frustration. They were threats and worse and you didn’t do anything to deserve them.”
“Can I see the messages?” Everyone seemed surprised by Chloe’s request.
“I don’t see how that could possibly be a good idea.” Bruce’s words pushed the girl back into her ‘holier than thou’ mode. Damian could practically see the superiority dripping from the girl.
“Because I know them and unlike Marinette I don’t have a romanticized view of those losers. I can tell what is out of character or not and tell you the likelihood of them acting on those threats because I’d be willing to be not all of the are idle. If I’ve learned anything about Rossi it’s that she’s capable of getting people to do things they wouldn’t otherwise. The only people she hasn’t managed to corrupt in some way are Marinette and myself. Adrien knows she’s a liar and she still somehow got into his head enough to make him think this is acceptable and that Mari is the problem.”
Marinette was frowning in thought while the boys tried to dissuade Chloe from wanting to look at the phone. Damian could tell they were just putting her back up more but didn’t see anyway to fix that so he just stayed silent.
“She’s right.” Everyone was silenced by Marinette’s soft words. She looked at Bruce and they could all see the pain in her eyes. “Chloe has both an inside and outside perspective of the situation that’s invaluable. I’m too close to the situation and you’re all too far away. Chloe’s the best bet we have to stop anyone from doing something foolish and making things worse.”
Damian watched as his father contemplated her words. His brothers just looked at each other. He had a feeling they were trying to come up with another argument. Marinette’s parents were both oddly blank so he had no idea what could be going through their heads. Chloe was just staring at Marinette in shock. She obviously didn’t expect anyone to agree with her.
“Thank you.” The words were soft but the feeling behind them made Damian think they weren’t just meant for this one instant.
“Tim, give her the phone.” Tim looked like he was going to argue but Bruce’s face made him think twice about it. “We can’t afford to leave resources on the table right now. If Marinette is willing to trust her then that should be good enough for the rest of us.” Tim gave an annoyed grunt but did hand over the phone.
Chloe made sure to angle herself so that Marinette couldn’t get a look at the screen, which Damian was grateful for, before unlocking it to look at the messages. The more she read the more shocked her expression became before turning sickly. He had a feeling she got to the one with the detailed suicide instructions. She handed the phone back to Tim looking a little queasy.
“I’d say the immediate physical threats would come from Alya, Adrien, and Kim. The rest don’t seem likely to take action on their own, but it won’t stop them from ganging up on Mari or trying to intimidate her through texts and social media.”
“Why those three?” It sounded like a normal question but Damian could tell Tim was using it as a test. Chloe sighed and rubbed her temples.
“Kim used to think he was in love with me and despite my showing no interest and being a bitch actually thought he had a chance. Judging from the tone of his messages he’s transferred that infatuation to Lila and she’ll use it to her advantage in any way she can. The idea to go after Mari would come from her but it would be Kim that’s the most likely to act on it. Adrien…” She paused and looked to be holding back tears. Marinette put a comforting hand on her arm and she took a deep breath before continuing. “His messages are extremely possessive. It’s clear that he considers Mari his property and is not going to react well to her leaving or doing anything he hasn’t approved of. As for Alya, she’s the most volatile. She’s always been brash and jumped into things without thinking but with Lila there to stoke the fire and aim her negative feelings I’d say she’s the most likely to get akumatized and go after Mari beside’s Lila herself.”
Damian had to admit she made a good case and given the interaction last night with Adrien he knew she was right about at least one of them. Marinette was right, Chloe would be a good asset in this battle. Tim looked like he wanted to argue but Damian caught his eye and shook his head. None of them knew these kids well enough to contradict Chloe’s opinion.
“What do you think Angel?” Marinette started a little at his question before looking at Chloe. The two simple stared at each other for a minute before she gave a  small, tired sigh.
“I trust her judgement. I know she’s right about Adrien and as much as I don’t want to believe it of the others my judgement is compromised and I know Chloe’s head for politics makes her more observant and analytical than the average person. If that’s who she thinks is a threat then they are.”
He could tell how much it hurt her to say those words and admit that people she once considered friends were a threat. He wrapped an arm around her and she leaned into his shoulder thoroughly drained. The rest of the table was murmuring about precautions and threat levels but he just wanted to concentrate on his soulmate and offer what comfort he could. It was actually kind of peaceful. That didn’t last.
“Little M! I didn’t expect to see you here, how have you been?”

Peonies
Tumblr media
Pairing: Lucas x Exchange Student!Reader Genre: complete fluff Length: 2.5k Summary: After a wild first encounter with Lucas, he decides to show you, a foreigner, his town’s best restaurants and popular places, and catches some feelings at the same time.
Peonies symbolize romance, compassion, and prosperity, but also bashfulness.
❀ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❀
You’ve always been a person that can never sit still. Ever.
You always had to be on the move, whether it’s through exercise or driving or through figuratively moving forward in your life. Change came easy to you; you embraced it with open arms and always decided to look at the positives of change rather than the negatives. So when you got the opportunity to join a student exchange program in China, you filled out an application and sent it off quicker than you can say: “I have to learn how to speak Mandarin?”
Actually landing in China would’ve been terrifying if it weren’t for your host family. You were very grateful for them to allow you to stay in their home. Unfortunately, your host family can’t go to school with you, and the campus of your new University was just another boulder you have to climb over to make your stay here successful. Thankfully you met Lucas-- in a quite brazen type of way.
He was skating down the sidewalk, already five minutes late to class, with his headphones on. It was partially your fault that he crashed, you probably shouldn’t have been walking around with your head down in your map and your own pair of headphones in your ears. Lucas just about missed you as he swerved out of the way and into a flower-selling vendor on your left.
The commotion makes you lift your head and remove your headphones; you gasp when you see the flowers scattered on the ground and the large boy at your feet. The street vendor yells at Lucas in light-speed Mandarin that you’re sure even he can’t understand. You quickly come forward to help him up, careful to not step on anymore flowers. You both quickly apologize to the street vendor who waves you off, silent curses leaving his mouth as he picks up his flowers.
“I’m so sorry. You should’ve just hit me, it probably wouldn’t have been worse.” You mumble as the boy in front of you readjusts his clothing. The more you look at him, the less you realize how “boy” he is: dark, tan skin that shines from the sunlight and seemingly perfect brown hair. You feel even more guilty about knocking him over after getting a good look at him.
“Don’t say that. I could’ve sent you to the hospital if I ran into you.” He smiles. You think he’s got to be the nicest person you’ve met here so far. “You’re not from around here?”
“No, I’m an exchange student. My name is Y/N.”
“I’m Lucas.”
“That’s a very…”
“Not Madarin name? Yeah, most of my friends call me Lucas so you can, too.” You try not to blush at his insinuation of being friends after you just caused him to crash into a flower seller, but you can’t help it.
“Why Lucas?” You ask.
“Uh, well…” He trails off, trying to remember the origin of such a Western name.
“You know, nevermind. I’ve probably taken so much of your time already.” You wave your hand dismissively, and Lucas remembers the class he is probably now very, very late for, but he doesn’t really want to leave.
“It’s okay, really. What are you doing later?” He asks as he retrieves his skateboard from a few feet away.
“Nothing… I don’t know. Why?” You try to act nonchalant at his question.
“Will you meet me back here tonight at 6? I guess I have to go to class right now, but you look like you could use a tour around the area. If yes, I’ll see you then!” Lucas doesn’t give you a chance to answer, only picking up a forgotten peony from the ground and giving it to you with a wink. He hops onto his skateboard and continues to skate down the sidewalk. You’re left in your spot, a bit flabbergasted and a bit amused as you twirl the flower in your hand.
You think about Lucas’ preposition for the next few hours. You don’t know this man, other than that he’s probably a native to the area, he takes classes at the University, and his name is Lucas. He could be trying to trick you and do who-knows-what with you (you are, after all, a foreigner) but you have a feeling that he means well, and that his intentions are harmless.
Maybe you’ve already fallen under the spell of his puppy dog eyes. So, you decide that meeting up with him later that night is worth it.
❀❀❀
“You came!” He shouts when he sees you near the same spot on the sidewalk where he catapulted himself off his skateboard only a few hours ago. “I honestly thought you wouldn’t come. I was kinda weird earlier today.” You rubs the back of his neck awkwardly and you shrug as you stop in front of him.
“I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt. So, you’re taking me on a tour? Where are we going?”
“That’s a surprise.” His eyes sparkle as he motions you to follow him.
“Oh, maybe I shouldn’t have given you the benefit of the doubt.” You tease him for his cryptic answer, but follow along anyway. You eventually reach a restaurant, and you immediately love the vibe of the place when you walk in. It’s not super big and the ceiling is pretty low, but you adore the softer lighting and your mouth waters at the smell of pork and ribs that lingers in the air. You and Lucas get to your seats and Lucas orders for both of you in quick Cantonese. When he turns to look at you afterwards, you’re a bit starstruck.
“You speak Cantonese, too? I’m starting to think you’re an enigma, Lucas.” The giggle that leaves him makes your heart soar and you feel like giggling, too.
You and Lucas talk as if you’ve been friends forever. Conversation comes easily with him, it seems like no matter what you say, he always has a story or a comment or a question. At the end of the night, you have his number in your phone and a friend in this new corner of the world that you’re no longer intimidated by.
❀❀❀
The next time you see Lucas, he’s with his equally attractive friends. They’re all standing outside of a building on campus talking amongst each other until Lucas notices you and waves you over.
“Y/N! Come meet my friends. This is Hendery and Winwin.” You introduce yourself politely, slightly intimidated by the number of eyes on you and by the other boys’ fast paced speaking.
“So, you’re Lucas’ new friend? We’ve heard all about you, but Lucas hasn’t wanted to introduce us before.” The two boys laugh and you feel like there’s a deeper meaning to their words with the way they eye Lucas as he coughs beside you.
“I’m introducing you guys now.” Lucas waves a hand between all four of you. “What are you doing right now?” He turns to you and you shake your head. You’ve finished your classes for today and don’t have anywhere to be, so Lucas waves goodbye to his friends and pulls you away from them. He has a firm grip on your hand and you’re too stunned at the gesture to stop him from leading you.
Are all the boys in China this straight forward?
Lucas eventually leads you to a part of campus you haven’t been to before: the garden. He seems to know his way around the greenhouses and confidently walks into one and pulls you in behind him. The heat from the greenhouse makes you unzip your jacket, but your hand still stays in Lucas’ even after he’s done leading you.
“Are we allowed to be here?” You ask and Lucas shrugs.
“Doesn’t look like anyone is here now, I think we’ll be okay.” One thing that you’ve started to like about Lucas is his confidence; you don’t know if he’s truly confident in everything he does or if he’s just making up his own rules and going with the flow of whatever happens. Either way, it excites you and makes you want to spend more time with him.
You finally take the time to look around the greenhouse, and your mouth opens in wonder. Flowers and greens of plants you’ve never seen before cover every inch of the greenhouse; you’re sure that if it wasn’t for the small concrete path running down the middle, the plants would have grown into the space as well. The air seems more fresh, but still holds fragrance.
“‘I’m glad you’re not allergic to flowers because this is my favorite place to visit on this entire campus.” Lucas mumbles next to you, as if he doesn’t want to bother the plants from doing their daily routines around him. You see a pink peony not too far from where you’re standing and you’re reminded of your first meeting with Lucas, the gentle giant who stands in the middle of this greenhouse like a kid in a candy store.
You finally peel your eyes from the view in front of you to look at him, but he’s already looking at you. You both catch each other staring, but don’t look away. Lucas’ intimidating gaze doesn’t seem so bad when it’s softened by the filtered sunlight coming through the roof of the greenhouse. You feel something pull you to him, the weight of his hand in yours beckoning you to lean in. Lucas’ smile becomes wider when he realizes you’re leaning and copies you.
Before your chests can touch, the greenhouse door opens and you jump away from each other, your tangled fingers unwillingly letting go. A few people carrying gardening supplies look at both of you, perplexed at why two kids are in this greenhouse. You and Lucas give them a quick wave as you walk past them and out the door, trying to keep in your laughter and hide your peony pink cheeks.
❀❀❀
The next time you see Lucas was a few nights later, but this time it’s planned. You go to his building, climb a few flights of stairs, and knock on his door nervously. When he opens it, his smile is wide as ever and he welcomes you in. You’re immediately greeted by the smell of green onions and sweet and sour sauce along with the laughter of children and some talking coming from a different room.
“This is dinner… with your family?” You ask as he helps you take off your coat and sheepishly smiles at you.
“Yeah, is that… okay?”
“Of course it’s okay. I’m just… nervous. Not prepared. What if I say something wrong? Do I look okay?” Lucas laughs at your questions, finding your reaction very cute. “Lucas, really, I need to know. I can’t look bad in front of your family.”
“You look perfect…” Lucas trails off as he pushes your hands away from your hair and brings them down to your sides. “Also, call me Yukhei.”
“Yukhei?” You ask. It feels like you’re being heated from the inside out, like his gaze could be hotter than the sun’s as he smiles at you.
“It’s my real name.” With this new information he leads you to the kitchen. You and Yukhei have been mostly talking to each other over text, along with some more meetups in person. He’s taken you to the dog park, the art museum, and a few more of his favorite restaurants. He’s truly fulfilled his mission to show you around town, which is why you were confused when he asked you to come over for dinner at his house. You don’t particularly mind, you’ve grown fond of Yukhei of the past few weeks.
The actual meeting of his family is very quick and you barely catch everyone’s names before you’re seated and the meal begins. There is not one second of silence at the table, it seemed like everyone has a story to share. When Yukhei’s family let you join in, you feel like you’re at home. You couldn’t help but notice how similar Yukhei is to all of the people at this table, which might seem obvious because they’re all his blood family, but to see the same smile on his father’s face and the same innocent, wide eyes on his mother’s is so heartwarming. Yukhei was truly raised with love, and it made you fall deeper into your feelings.
Dinner came to an end and before you know it, Yukhei and you are being pushed out of the apartment to “go take a walk, or whatever you kids do.” You and Yukhei lazily found your way to the playground outside of his apartment building, your tummies full and cheeks warm from hours of talking and laughing, not even the cold air could take away the feeling.
“Thank you for inviting me over tonight, but can I ask why?” You find a comfortable seat in a swing as Yukhei kicks the gravel beneath his feet.
“Well, I wanted to show you around town. I showed you all the good restaurants, the popular places on campus and in town. I thought it would be fun to show you some of… me.” Since the first time you’ve met him, Yukhei sounded unsure. “My family is a big part of me.” He finishes quietly.
“I wouldn’t have asked for anything else. Thank you.” You both turn your gazes away from each other, not being able to handle the intimacy in the air. Yukehi shuffles around and you look up to see him opening his jacket and pulling out a small peony.
“My mom bought them today and when she came home with them, I thought of you.”
“I thought of you.” You don’t know if Yukhei is aware of how much his words affect you, how hard your heart pounds in your ears as he steps closer to you and kneels down on the crunchy gravel in front of you. You reach out to gently help the petals of the slightly squashed flower open up and smell the faint scent that still wafts from it.
Yukhei gently nudges the short stem into your hair, behind your ear, and helps settle it into its place. His rough fingertips tickle your jaw as he rests his hand there and admires how the color of the flower brings out specks of gold in your eyes, and he falls a little deeper in love with you at this new find.
Lucas knows exactly how he affects you because you affect him in the same way.
“You’re a peony, Y/N.” Lucas giggles at his cheesy words, but stops to ask his question, eyes wide and heart quivering in desire. “Will you be my peony?”
You can only nod your head, not trusting your voice to work after hearing Yukhei’s deep voice sound so intimate. Hearts bloom as lover’s eyes meet, and peonies can’t compare to the gardens that your love will nurture.

The Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes Gen, 1930 words, rated M for violence
Jewish Bucky Barnes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Episode 3 Power Broker
Bucky's inner thoughts when Zemo, Conrad Mack and the Winter Soldier walk into the Brass Monkey
TW: violence, slight dissociation during the fight
Read on AO3
Part 21 of Making a Home - the Jewish Bucky series
--------------
Low Town is overwhelming. Neon lights, smokes, sweat, sex, food, trash, everything out in the open. There are signs in multiple languages around him as they walk by. Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, English, Arabic. He can read most of them. They’re all shop names, advertisements for services. Amongst them is a 24-hour Russian laundromat that probably doesn’t launder clothing.
Money changes hands at the corner of his eyes, fat stacks of bills in various currencies. Kuwaiti and Bahraini dinars, US Dollars, Euros, Yen, Rubles. He can’t see any rupiah, which is interesting for an Indonesian-archipelago island but Madripoor has always been its own thing.
There are guns everywhere, from small pistols to assault rifles paraded around on shoulders with little to no care. There are so many of them it’s hard to count but he does it anyway. 78 firearms by the time they make it to the door of the Brass Monkey. 91% of those they have crossed paths with were armed in some way that he could see.
It’s so much. It’s familiar in an almost overwhelming way. Zemo walks ahead, proud and tall and confident. Any hint of the wistful man in the plane has been scrubbed off. He’s Baron Helmut Zemo; commander, colonel, criminal. Bucky doesn’t know exactly what Zemo did to get those Madripoori contacts. He’s thankful for them anyway.
Sam follows him, obviously uncomfortable in his colorful clothing, his slightly heeled boots, the necklaces and flair. Sam’s a soldier, a man of simple needs, simple clothing. He’s not used to this. Bucky’s pretty sure there’s a hidden meaning in the wax pattern of the suit, but he doesn’t know it. Zemo must. Unless the twinkle in his eye when he took the outfit out of its bag in the plane was born from somewhere else.
Bucky closes the march, keeping an eye on their backs and their surroundings. He almost expected Zemo to have a copy of his Winter Soldier gear in the second clothing bag but he didn’t. This… is better. Much better. He doesn’t know how he would handle being in the Soldier’s actual clothes again.
The jacket is leather and only has one sleeve. It’s a deep, dirty red, rusted, ashy, and bloody. The pants are tactical, close with a thick belt. There’s a harness around his chest, the same kind he used to wear to carry his Škorpion vz. 61 on. Except he doesn’t have his guns right now. Zemo insisted they come weaponless. The harness is purely decorative. Fucker.
Granted, it does make Bucky feel less like himself, and more like the Soldier. The harness pulls his shoulders back by the simple fact that it’s there. It’s not tight, but it’s just… there. And it makes him stand differently. He has fingerless gloves as well and the air against his fingertips is almost strange.
He finds himself moving differently, with the perfect silence of the world’s best trained assassin. He finds himself melting once more into the skin of a machine. And for once, he lets himself go.
He wishes for guns or knives, but all he has is himself. It’s enough to make him lethal, of course;  his body was made for killing. Every cell in his body makes him an apex predator. It’s a wonder he doesn’t have fucking razor sharp teeth.
In between the serum and the training, he doesn’t need a weapon. He is the weapon. He walks behind Zemo and Sam silently, darkly. He doesn’t need to bare his teeth for people to know one word from either of the men in front of him and he will rip them to shreds.
Zemo’s voice resounds in Russian.
There are 103 people in this room, and if the earlier statistics are right, at least 93 of them are armed with a firearm or large knife of some sort. With the way the crowd envelops them, it’s impossible to completely avoid fire if something has to happen. He’ll take care of taking his handler to safety. And Sam.
Right. And Sam.
Two handlers is one too many in this sort of situation and he doesn’t have an order of importance. He’s big, but he’s not big enough to shield the two of them effectively. He’ll find a way. He always does.
Is that the Winter Soldier?
They’ve been noticed. Baron Zemo, Conrad Mack, and the Winter Soldier. Enough names to make heads turn. He understands a bodyguard needs to be close.
There are two exit routes that he can currently see. The one they just came in from, which would be complex if the crowd turns against them and bars the exit. He can probably make a way for them. Possible, if not for the stray bullets. How big the casualties would be is unknown. The other option is a door behind the main bar. What lies behind it is unknown, but he will take corridors and close quarters over crowded bar. Less space for the unknown. Easier to shield both men.
He keeps one ear on the conversation - mostly on the inflection of tones in their voices - and settles against the bar. He starts his radar watching their immediate surroundings. 23 guns he can see, 21 knives, 15 people watching, 5 actively talking about them, 3 in English, 2 in what sounds like Bahasa Malaysia, or perhaps Bahasa Indonesia.
And then Sam gets distraught about something. Bucky watches him drink a very suspicious looking shot under Zemo’s amused eyes. That one’s enjoying this too much. Bucky feels a sneer coming up to his face but he doesn’t move a muscle. Not the place to show open animosity towards his handler.
And then the first man comes.
You ain’t welcome here.
Threat against Zemo. Bucky forces himself not to roll his eyes. Of course he’s not welcome. Fucking hell. They’re gonna have to fight their way through this, because Zemo walked them right into the fucking lion’s mouth.
There’s a chat, it doesn’t know anywhere. The “Power Broker” is a hilarious name. Cocksure assholes, all of them.
And then… it shifts. From the corner of his eyes, he sees a whispered conversation between the first man and a bigger man, tall and large and obviously a strong arm. Bucky shifts. Sam seems to have noticed the change as well. Zemo is still chatting with the bartender, despite the threat. Bucky knows better than to believe he’s oblivious.
When Zemo’s eyes meet his - dark, intense, sharp and somehow both commanding and questioning -, Bucky nods.
The Russian order wraps around his mind. The man’s hand never touches the handler’s expensive coat.
The crowd parts for him, makes space for him. The man’s wrist bones are crushed to dust by the time he stops walking him to the center of the room. He switches hands, holds out his left arm and sends it flying into the man’s collarbones at full power. The man is on the ground, screaming. Shattered collarbone.
He has the time to take a breath and turns around. A second, younger, darker-haired man launches himself at him, right hand closed into a fist. He sidesteps, wraps his right arm around the man’s, and sends his left punching hard in between the man’s shoulder blades, keeping his right arm straight.
The man bends in half and he strikes him in the chest. The man’s hood falls over his head. Another hit on the back of the neck. He pulls him back, forces him to stumble backwards and kicks him hard in the chest, the full power of his enhanced legs behind him. There was a third man getting ready to join the fray behind the second, but the kick takes care of the both of them.
Out of several people behind a coffee table, one gets up, stepping onto the table to join the open circle where he’s now fighting. He drops to the ground, swipes his right leg out, breaking the table’s leg and sending the guy balancing on it down. As soon as he lends, he’s welcomed by a hard kick in the chest.
The guy might not get back up. He doesn’t have time to check.
When he turns back to where the handler and the other are, he sees the handler’s hand on the back of a man’s coat. And suddenly, number 5 is shoved towards him. Knife in right hand. He shifts. The knife hits a few centimeters to the right of where his prosthetic is anchored in his flesh, against vibranium.
He feels the shock slightly, hears the scraping of metal against metal, sees the man’s eyes widen in fear as he realizes that he hasn’t managed to hit the soft, tender, sensitive part where flesh and metal meet. Of course he failed. The new arm is set further in than the old one was.
A knife has been brought out. A weapon. After that, there’s no holding back.
Men fall around him like flies, his body moves without thought. It’s brutal, it’s violent, it’s perfect. He doesn’t think. He acts.
Didn’t take much for him to fall back into form.
The words bloom warm into his chest. Pride.
He’s squeezing down on the first man’s throat, choking him in a familiar motion, when a hand lands on his prosthetic. Someone’s holding him back. He almost growls at that until he hears the familiar voice.
Zemo whispers to Sam to stay in character.
“Отлично, солдат.”
The Russian wraps around him again but this time, it feels like so many things Bucky feels nauseous. There are guns being cocked, whispers, machines, stares on him, lights, it’s overwhelming. It’s too much. It feels like there’s a large, too bright, stage light shining on him.
There are hands on him. Sam’s hand has left his left arm. Those are Zemo’s hands, both of them. One on his shoulder blade and one on his stomach, on the soft, tender underside. Steadying. Not holding him back. Steadying him.
And then it’s done. He lets go of the man. They have made a nice enough display. Successful. Prideful. He made the handler happy. Fuck off . He has no reason to make Zemo happy. He made Sam worry, and that’s worse.
Sam doesn’t need more worry. He doesn’t need that. That was the whole fucking point of Bucky not answering his texts for three fucking months. That Sam wouldn’t have to worry about him. And now he does, and he’s seen him.
He’s seen the Winter Soldier. Worse. He’s seen Bucky. Because there were no codewords, no chair, no coercion. He did it. He did it. It’s disgusting and horrifying and Sam might as well call the army now and tell them to throw him back into the Raft and throw away the key.
The adrenaline is still buzzing through him and he could go for hours more. This was an easy fight. This was the best fight he’s had in a fucking decade.
“You good?”
Fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, no. No, i’m not good, no, I can’t do this, take me away, fuck, fuck I can’t do this.
He has to do this. He has to go through this. Because it’s necessary. It’s what he has to do to get the information they need so there aren’t more supersoldiers than there needs to be. And that number is zero. Fuck. Fuck, it’s bad.
He would be shaking if he didn’t have absolute control over his body at that moment.
He nods. Sam might not buy it. There’s no time for therapy right now.

@mcheang I want a Felix episode AU, where Felix is taken with Marinette but doesn’t really try to go out of his way to see her. And then he meets her cousin
[Send me Felinette prompts!]
......
Marinette Dupain-Cheng, famous child designer.
Her mother was a famed model and her father a gentle baker. It was no surprise that with that encouraging environment surrounded by beautiful clothes that Marinette’s fashion sense bloomed. Her brand, Cheng, skyrocketed when she was barely ten years old.
When Marinette turned thirteen, her father, Tom Dupain, disappeared. Her mother became a recluse and Marinette took it upon herself to heal her broken family.
Her mother was taken to therapy and soon rejoined the modeling world, becoming the sole model for Marinette’s new line, Dupain.
Marinette was a legend, she was graceful, responsible and humble even in the face of success.
And she had been sitting in front of Felix in class for most of the school year.
Felix had to admit, he had had a little crush on Marinette ever since she offered him her umbrella after her first day of school, and the first day Felix became Crimson Spot.
He kept his distance, but there were still times where he found himself abandoning logic to hang out with her, but not to the extent that he could be.
But Marinette’s job as a famous designer did take a toll on her, as she put so much pressure on herself to learn languages, play piano and guitar and be a generally well-rounded human being. It caused her to have to skip some friendly outings.
Today was one of those days.
The whole class had met up to discuss ways to lighten Marinette’s mood on the anniversary of the day her father disappeared.
“What if we sent her videos?” Felix suggested. “Telling her how happy we are to be friends with her.”
“Great idea dude!” Nino elbowed him. “Why don’t you go first?”
A shock of fear ran through him as he snatched the tablet from Nino’s hand. “Why don’t I just record them for now?”
Nino gave him a look, but allowed it and moved on.
Gina Dupain stared down at her granddaughter, sitting next to her daughter-in-law, both of them looking at the statue of her son, singing the little kitten song he had taught them before they left.
She had so desperately wanted to tell them, console themselves with the information that he would return, just as soon as she got the miraculous from those pesky heroes.
She was the ‘villain’ Lady Violet and her darling son was resting under her families home, comatose, because of the peacock miraculous.
She wanted to tell them, to ask them to help her, but she just couldn’t.
Gina walked down the stairs and sat next to them, wrapping her arms around the only family she had left.
The doorbell rang and and they all jolted from their song and they walked to the door just as it opened, revealing a large shadow.
“Papa?” Marinette whispered, stepping forwards.
The figure walked forwards just a little more, revealing him to be Sabine’s brother, Wang.
He stepped aside to reveal a petite girl with deep blue hair tied in a high ponytail.
“Bridgette!” Marinette smiled and launched herself at her cousin. “It’s been so long.”
“It certainly has.” Sabine grabbed her brother by the arm and began chatting with him in Mandarin, a language the whole family was fluent in, thanks to Marinette. “Remember when those two would dress up like each other and you ended up taking Marinette home?”
He chuckled. “I was so easily fooled.”
After Bridgette had successfully detangled herself from her cousin, she glanced at Gina, more specifically, the necklace Gina was wearing.
Gina caught her glance and casually tucked the necklace into her shirt.
“So, sister, I don’t mean to pry, but would you consider giving me the family rings?”
“Of course, Tom’s is somewhere upstairs. Marinette, take Bridgette upstairs and help her get settled.” The four of them went upstairs and Gina was left alone, staring at the ring on her necklace.
That girl better be worth an akuma.
Bridgette scrolled on her phone absentmindedly, as Marinette chattered on about who knows what.
“I’m just so glad you’re here!”
“Yeah... so am I. Anyway, can I take a shower? I feel like I’ve been on that plane forever.”
“Yeah, no problem.”
Bridgette stood up and began walking to the room she gestured to, before she got an idea. She turned slightly, wrapping her arms around Marinette and slipping her phone from her pocket into Bridgette’s.
“Thanks for being here for me, Mari.”
She heard a soft hum and Marinette hugged her back.
“Anytime.”
Once the shower was turned on, Bridgette slid to the floor and started going through Marinette’s phone.
“A superhero crush? Seriously?”
Just as she was about to go onto social media, the phone buzzed with a video message.
“Hey, girl.” A girl in a plaid shirt waved at the camera. “I know you’re probably having a bad time right now, but-“
“Boring.” She deleted it.
“Markov and I have done the research an jokes are statistically proven to improve your mood by ninety-seven percent. So, knock knock?”
“Lame.” She snorted.
“You’re so sweet and kind and considerate and-“
“Wow. Original.”
“Marinette. I know you’re likely going through something right now, and I want to let you know that I’m here for you, because... I adore you. I have for quite some time, ever since you gave me your umbrella that day at school.”
“Pathetic.”
After the last video had been deleted, she leaned her head back against the wall.
So the little princess has some good friends... not for long.
“Hey Bridgette?” Marinette spike through the door. “I’ve got some stuff in the oven downstairs, mind if I leave you here to go get it?”
“No problem, but do you have any extra clothes I could borrow?”
“Sure thing, I’ve got some in my closet. Take whatever you want.”
She heard the door close and turned off the shower.
First, a little more snooping.
She checked the drawers, computer, and a really smelly cabinet.
“Yuck.” She threw the awful thing on the bed and pushed a pillow on it.
Finally, she opened a drawer and found the biggest stash of hair ties in the world.
Good, now she could put her hair in those insufferable pigtails.
She opened the closet and chose a navy jacket and neatly cuffed jean shorts, along with a white t-shirt.
She pulled out the phone and pressed record, a smile on her face.
“I hope you’re happy, Tikki. Because I am never doing anything again.”
She giggled, floating over his head. “Don’t be so dramatic! I’m sure Marinette will appreciate the confession.”
“During the time she is most vulnerable, another thing to think about is the last thing she needs.”
“Well...” His phone buzzed before she could answer.
“Marinette answered.” He remarked, walking up to the rest of his friends.
“...It only served to make me feel worse! I hate all of you!”
“I can’t look at this.” Alya passed the tablet to Nino.
“How could she say that about us?” Rose whimpered. “I thought we were her friends.”
“Marinette said all of that? Impossible.”
“She did.” Juleka shook her head.
The girl who made sure she was at every rehearsal, every practice, everything she was asked to go to?
“Nino, I really think-“ he was cut off when a cloud of violet attacked his three classmates, transforming them into their former akumatized selves.
“He’s not ‘Nino’ anymore.” Reflecta spoke, transforming Alya into a carbon copy of her.
“I’m Bubbler now.” He swung the tablet-shaped wand in the air, deadly bubbles pouring out.
“One of the three Punishers!” Princess Fragrance remarked with glee, a familiar toxic cloud pouring from her gun.
Felix gulped in a breath of air, barely muttering “Spots on” as he dove into the water.
It can’t be an akuma, maybe a sentimonster?
He threw his yo-yo out, swinging after the three punishers, hoping to save the true Marinette and get some answers.
“I made cookies!” Marinette sang, opening her door with the tray. “It’s been so long, I can’t remember what your favorite is, so I went with an old classic; chocolate chip!”
She stopped dead in her tracks as she saw Bridgette rocket off of her office chair, hair in pigtails.
“Whatcha doing, Bridge?”
“Well...”
“Marinette!” Her mother barged in. “Akumas, get the both of you to the bunker!”
“Too late.” Reflekta walked in, accompanied by Bubbler and Princess Fragrance.
“Dude, which one’s the real Mari?” Bubbler whispered.
Marinette glanced at Bridgette. She needed to transform before anyone got hurt.
“It is I! The cruel Marinette!” She cackled, relishing in the concerned and confused look on Bridgette’s face. “You’ll never take me alive!” She dashed out of the door.
Once she had made it into a secure hallway, Plagg flew out of her pocket.
“So, I know you’re against using cataclysm on a person but...”
“No, Plagg.”
“She smushed my cheese!”
“I’ll get you more cheese, now come on, claws out.”
She felt the familiar magic leather clothe her and jumped out a window, eyes landing on the familiar red bug in the distance.
Felix swung into the room, grabbing Marinette and swinging her out and onto the roof of the nearest hotel.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know!” Her eyes were wide and innocent; Felix felt his composure slipping.
“Well, if you don’t have any information, just stay here and hide; I’ll deal with the akuma.”
He turned to leave.
“Wait! Crimson Spot!” She grabbed his arm and Felix swallowed.
“Yes?”
She started walking and Felix stepped backwards in an attempt to preserve personal space.
“How ‘bout a little extra courage?” His back bumped against the wall and he stood, frozen, as he watched the girl he had adored from afar lean closer.
“That won’t be necessary.” He tried to gently push her away, but she persisted, her lips mere millimeters from his.
Something within him burned red and snapped. He crouched low and swept his right foot in a circle, knocking her to the ground.
“You’re either an imposter or a sentimonster, because Marinette certainly understands that no means no.”
“That’s Bridgette,” Catastropheline landed gently on her toes, not making eye contact with Crimson. “Marinette’s cousin. I ran into her and she told about the... situation.”
She glanced at Bridgette, who was backing away ever so slightly.
“It must be difficult keeping what few friends you have with you acting like that, huh?”
“If she’s not a sentimonster, then we need to stop wasting time and find the akuma.” He threw his yo-yo into the air and a small can of whipped cream fell into his hand.
“As always, Tikki.” He groaned.
“Cataclysm.” Darkness collected over Catastropheline’s palm just as three thumps sounded around them.
“I wouldn’t if I was you, kitty.” Refleckta had her brooch aimed at the dark clothed hero’s heart.
“I usually prefer my servants to wear pink,“Princess Fragrance twirled her gun around, “but I suppose red would do.”
“And if that’s not enough, I’ll send you both on a one way flight to the sun if you so much as move.”
“Crimson.” His partner spoke from beside him. “Do you have a plan?”
Before he could deliver the depressing answer, a shout turned them both to Bubbler, who was clutching his hand with Bridgette in front of them, holding the tablet.
“Good! Bridgette, break the wand now! Then this torture can be over.”
“Oh, I don’t want it to be over. I’m just switching the roles.” She smirked before she held up the rectangular wand. “Lady Violet! Are you listening? I can help you; all I need in return is a certain piece of jewelry.”
“Get the miraculous first, and I’ll consider it.” Bubbler growled, holding out his hand for the wand.
She grinned wider. “With pleasure.”
She tossed the wand to Bubbler and started running towards the superhero pair.
“Feline, batter up.” Was all he said as he launched his can into the air.
Even without the use of her ring-bearing hand, she swung her baton effortlessly, slamming it into the can.
It fell just ahead of Bridgette’s feet, and she stepped on it haphazardly, tripping and sending it into Bubbler’s face.
The wand flew through the air and started its decent to the pavement.
“Crimson! Go!”
“What about-“ He glanced at the imposter who had stood up and was moving towards him, only to see a metal baton slam into her abdomen.
He took in the two Punishers struggling in the pool and dashed to the side of the building, jumping off.
He landed directly on top of the bubble wand and heard the reassuring snap of broken plastic.
He purified the akuma swiftly and launched the battered can of whipped cream that had landed beside the wand, into the air with a shout of “Miraculous Ladybug.”
He swung back up as the cure swept the streets and landed beside Catastrophiline, who was helping Rose out the door.
“Pound it?”
She grinned and attempted to step over to him but ended up tripping over her own baton and, in a series of impressive acrobatics, landing on her face in front of Crimson Spot.
He chuckled and held out his hand. “I’d just begun to think you’d grown out of that.”
“Well, old habits hie dard, I mean, die hard.” She sprung to her feet with a sheepish grin, twirling the leather straps holding her pigtails in place.
They pressed their fists together and left, a screaming Bridgette still on the roof.
“... I just want you to know, Mari, that I am so sorry. I just... I was jealous that my father named his famed Celestial soup after you, and not me.” Bridgette, back in her own clothes looked down.
“What are you talking about?” Wang looked down at his daughter. “I’ve named so many of my dishes after you. My Angelic stew, to name one.”
“What?” She looked up at him with tears in her eyes. “I thought...”
“If every dish I wanted to name after you was called ‘Bridgette,’ people would get confused.” He explained, pulling her into his arms. “If only I had noticed, I could have explained.”
“It’s okay, Papa. I overreacted.” She spared another glance at her father, then turned to her extended family.
“I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me, after all the strife I caused.”
Marinette was the first to hug her, whispering a soft apology.
Sabine joined next, until it was just Gina standing beside the group hug with a hand on Bridgette’s shoulder.
She felt a slight tug and was pulled deep into the hug. The tension seemed to melt from her body and Gina allowed herself to feel content.
Bridgette was the first to pull out of the embrace.
“Thank you all, for forgiving me so quickly.”
“Of course.” Marinette grinned.
“You’re welcome back anytime.” Sabine added. “And, brother, I’ll call you if I ever find Tom’s ring.”
“I’d appreciate it.”
The two entered a black vehicle and drove off, Bridgette still waving through the window.
“Hey guys! I’m really sorry, but I wasn’t able to see your videos. It really warms my heart that you were thinking of me today, though. I want you to know that I love you. All of you.”
Marinette’s beaming face filled the screen as Felix watched the video again and again.
“She’s so considerate.” He sighed.
“Yeah, considering all that just happened with her cousin.” Tikki remarked. “It’s too bad she didn’t see your confession, though.”
“It’s probably all for the best. However, that Bridgette girl may prove to be an issue.”
“Yeah, working with Hawkmoth and his akumas all on her own, it’s kind of scary. I wonder what could be worth that?”
“It’s truly a pity that Sabine couldn’t find the second ring.” Wang sat down next to Bridgette, allowing her a window seat on the train.
“You mean this one?” Bridgette pulled a chain from her pocket and displayed the ring adorning it.
“Yes, Bridgette, that’s it!” He stared at the ring, transfixed for a moment, before hugging his daughter. “My little magician, always saving the day at the last minute.”
Bridgette smiled and, as her father turned to slip the ring in with its partner, turned to the window, her innocent features twisting into a cruel smirk.
It really was a shame their trip was cut so short. She could have had a lot of fun in Paris.

Stark Spangled Banner Ch1: Back Into The Field
Tumblr media
Summary: Katie heads back to SHIELD following the crazy events in Miami and finds herself on desk arrest following a disciplinary for two weeks. But when catastrophe strikes on a mission, she kinda wishes she had stayed there.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x O/C Katie Stark
Warnings: Bad language (no smut, yet, but will be down the line. A bit of angst,  injury and blood (some may find upsetting)
Tumblr media
Stark Spangled Man: Re-cap
Steve was mad, furious, absolutely and utterly infuriated. His foot tapped as he rode the elevator up to the 95th floor where it pinged open and he stepped into the living area of the tower. Katie uncurled herself off the couch and started to speak before the doors had even shut behind him.
“I know you’re pissed…” she began, but he held his hand up, shaking his head.
“Pissed doesn’t even come into it…” he said, “Are you insane?”
“Not last time I checked.”
He felt his jaw tighten, this wasn’t the time for her jokes or quips. As he looked at she felt herself quell under his gaze and she dropped her eyes from his and sighed.
“I had to help.”
“You’re a fucking idiot_!” he stood, arms folded as he glared at her. She raised an eyebrow at him, but remained silent as he unloaded “You could have been seriously hurt, or killed… I told you to call me!”
“You’re only pissed off because you missed a chance to play the hero…” she snapped and then inwardly groaned. As soon as the words left her mouth she regretted them.
“Is…is that actually what you think?” he frowned, looking like puppy dog she’d just kicked across the floor.
“No, its not…” she said, shaking her head. “I didn’t mean…”
“I was worried about you!” he pressed, “Katie, you’re my best friend and I couldn’t cope losing you as well…”
As well as Bucky.
His sentence hung, unfinished, making her feel like shit. She sighed and crossed the room, slipping her arms around his waist. After a second or two he unfolded his arms and hugged her back.
“You should have called me.” He sighed, his tone softening as she lay her head on his chest.“It was so frustrating. Fury was refusing to do anything, if I knew how to fly one of those damned jets I’d have taken one myself…"
“Ask Clint for some flying lessons.” she said, stepping back to look up at him, sighing again as his face displayed no amusement at her attempted joke. “Look, I’m sorry, truth is, I didn’t think. We just got caught up and I didn’t want to drag you into something that wasn’t your fight. This was down to Tony and a very long list of people he has pissed off…”
Steve snorted as he released her from his grip “Well then it isn’t your fight either is it?”
“He’s my brother, Steve, I’d die for him if I had to.” she shrugged.
“How is he now?” Steve asked, following her towards the bar area.
“Seems ok.” she said, stepping behind it. “Recovering from the surgery, destroyed all his Iron Man suits…”
“He what?”
“Clean Slate protocol… blew them all up. Including the one he had made for me.” she slid an open beer across the bar top towards him. He caught it as he settled down on a stool, shaking his head.
“Wait, he made you a suit?” Steve frowned “An Iron Man suit?”
“Iron Maiden…” she grinned, leaning on the bar opposite him as he looked at her blankly. She rolled her eyes and grinned “They’re a band…rock… add them to the list.”
He raised an eyebrow at her and pulled out the notebook she’d gifted to him the year, making a note of the name, before he slipped it back into his jacket pocket.
“So he made you a suit…” he said, motioning her to continue.
“Yeah, well wasn’t much point seeing as I only got to wear it for like half an hour or whatever. It was only a prototype, nothing I could use with SHIELD either as it was too conspicuous, not that it matters anyway as he blew them all up, like a massive firework display”
“Why?” he frowned, bottle paused halfway to his mouth.
“Some kind of outward gesture to Pepper, basically said that any designs for a new one she gets to help him with…”
Steve took a big pull of his beer and swallowed. “That’s a big step for him.”
“Yeah, I know. He loves her.” Katie swallowed a mouthful of beer “And she loves him, she’s good for him.”
“Is she ok now after the whole Extremis thing?”
“Yeah. Tony managed to engineer an antidote with a bit of help from the SHIELD lab and she’s good.”
“And how are you?” he asked.
“Honestly?” Katie snorted, shaking her head “absolutely exhausted by all of it. Gods, Aliens, crazy assed super soldiers that explode…” her eyes narrowed as she eyed him playfully and suspiciously “you’re not gonna explode are you?”
“Not planning on it, no.” his crooked grin spread across his face.
***********
After ‘going rogue’ to chase the Mandarin with her brother Fury was pissed and as such was basically giving her the most boring thing he could think of- working through piles of mission reports, analysing and cross referencing them with others to pick up on common threads .To be honest, she didn’t mind it too much. After the excitement of the festive period she had welcomed a relatively quiet return to work, and didn’t particularly give a shit what Fury thought about her either. That said, it was heavy going, but as with anything she was soon engrossed, circling a part of the hard copy of the report with highlighter pen, before glancing back at the screen to cut and paste it into the Scrapbook App she used to trace trends with, letting out a groan.
Nope, this was officially crap.
Steve’s morning wasn’t much better. After one particularly gruelling Ops Training session, whereby one of the newest kids suffered a broken nose after colliding painfully with a stray shock baton, he showered and headed up to find Katie. She’d skipped the Ops training, not particularly needing it to be fair as she was a dead shot as it was, but her main reason was she was buried in work that Fury had dropped on her desk. He found her sat, paper in her hand and she was looking her computer screen. She sighed, scratching at her head before she dropped the file onto the desk letting out a groan. It was such a pure, natural action, Steve felt he was interrupting something, even though he knew he wasn’t. So he gave a little cough and as she turned round, her pretty face cracking into a smile which he returned.
“Fancy lunch?” he asked her.
She nodded instantly “God yes. Can we get FroYo after?”
“Yeah but don’t let me pile it with all that crap this time!” he shot her his best playfully disapproving look as he remembered the first time she had taken him to the Frozen Yoghurt stall. He had loaded his with all sorts of different things and the result had been beyond foul.
Katie gave a laugh and picked up her jacket, shrugging it on. He held the door for her and she stepped under his arm, and he followed her to the elevator.
“Stick to chocolate chip, mint and cookie dough!“ she said, stepping into it. “Trust me.”
They strode across the foyer and into the early spring sun. Katie pulled her jacket tighter around herself as they crossed the street.
“How are you just wearing a shirt?” she asked, looking at Steve as he fell into step besides her, making sure he was on the side nearest the road. He noticed that she’d long since given up chiding him on this old fashioned habit after he had revealed it was something he used to do for his mom too, and Bucky’s younger sister. She’s simply rolled her eyes but today he swore he saw something that looked like a soft smile flicker on her lips when he positioned himself on her left, but as quick as he noticed it, it was gone.
“It’s not too bad. Been through worse.” He grinned as he opened the door to the Deli for her. He followed her in and stood besides her in the queue and became aware that she was looking at him.
“What?” he asked, turning to her exasperatedly. Katie couldn’t help but grin, she enjoyed winding the usually mild mannered man up
“I’m trying to imagine how you would look with a beard. And with shorter hair.” she said causing the Captain to roll his eyes. He was used to her utter random comments now. She was very like her brother in that respect, her mind moved at about 100 miles an hour and half the time he had no idea what made her come out with the stuff she did and to be honest, he’d long since given up attempting to understand.
“Not gonna happen.”
“What the hair cut or the beard?” she asked.
“Neither.”
“Spoil sport.”
“Captain America doesn’t have a beard.” he shook his head.
“Steve Rogers could…”
She was impossible, but Steve couldn’t help but want to laugh.
They ordered and ate their lunch, Steve filling her in on the ops drill and after Fro-Yo they made arrangements to slob out that evening at Steve’s with a film. Katie headed back to her office to continue sifting through the Mount Everest of reports she had to do. As with anything once she got the bit between her teeth, she completely zoned out. It was only when she heard a gabble of voices all bidding each other goodbye that she looked up from her work. It was dark outside, and past 6.
“Shit…” she groaned as the realisation washed over her. She was supposed to be at Steve’s for half past. She clicked to save her work whilst calling him at the same time, phone sandwiched between her cheek and shoulder.
“So…I’m running late” she apologised the instant he answered. He chuckled.
“I thought that you said the one good thing about being confined to desk duties was that you set the hours!”
“Yeah, well I got caught up in something…but I’m leaving now. Do you want me to grab pizza on the way?”
“Sounds good, not Chicago Style though. I’m hankering for a proper piece of pie.”
“God you’re such a New Yorker.” she rolled her eyes.
“You say it like it’s a bad thing.” he said, his voice taking on a mock hurt tone and she could imagine him pouting on the other end of the phone.
“Hmmm, I’m undecided. Right, I’m going now…see you soon.”
“Drive safe.”
“What are you my dad?”
“Old enough to be” he shot back.
“Touche.” she sniggered, cutting the call
*******
“Boring New York style for Mr S Rogers…” she spoke into the intercom and he buzzed her in. By the time she’d climbed the stairs he was waiting at the door to his flat, leaning on the door frame.
“Bout time…” he muttered, taking the boxes off her “Was about to send a search party.”
“Mario’s was packed” she said, kicking off her sneakers and heading straight through to his kitchen to grab a beer out of his fridge without waiting for him to offer, knowing he wouldn’t. He didn’t need to.
Steve headed into the living room, depositing the 3 boxes on the coffee table and reaching straight in for one of the pepperoni slices before Katie flopped down next to him, handing him a beer.
“What we ticking off the list tonight?” she asked.
“A Few Good Men.” he said, nodding at the tv where he had queued the movie up ready.
“Wait...did you manage to navigate that Android box all by yourself…” she looked at him and he sighed.
“I’m not completely useless ya know…”
“Jury’s out.” she teased, curling her legs up onto the sofa next to her.
They watched the film. Steve got most of the references within it. He chuckled in the right places, and laughed out loud when Katie was unable to stop herself uttering the immortal line “You can’t handle the truth” When the film had finished, Katie unfolded herself from where she had been sat and they launched into Steve’s favourite part of Movie Nights- the post film analysis.
“Who was the guy who played the colonel…errr Jessup?” he looked at her.
“Jack Nicholson” she said, “Amazing actor. He’s in a few on your list.”
“He was good. Kaffee annoyed me a little, arrogant, cocksure.”
“Reminds me of Tony” Katie sniggered.
“Well, I didn’t want to say anything” he said, giving a little smirk.
“You enjoy it?” she asked.
“Yeah, very good. Better than the one we watched the other night anyway.”
“Yeah, pisses me off though. I mean Galloway, she’s a strong female military woman and they still have to go with the romance angle. And with Kaffee too. Personally I’d have punched him in the face several times.“
“It does seem to be a tried and tested format” he said, leaning back against the cushions on his couch “Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy wins girl over…”
“Appeals to the hopeless romantic in all of us.” Katie shrugged “Crap like that, happy endings and all, never happens unless it’s in a film. What’s more likely to happen is boy gets you into bed and then fucks off when the chase is over. Well, most men anyway.”
Whilst her action and mannerisms remained neutral, the bitterness in her voice gave her away and Steve felt a surge of anger towards her ex. He’d never met the guy and still wanted to punch his lights out for the way he’d treated her. They continued to chat for a bit longer until Katie glanced at her watch, and seeing the time decided to call it a night.
The more he stood there in the shower and thought about her, the more he started to feel something…well…different. And he couldn’t put his finger on it. Was it that he found her attractive? Well of course he did. To be honest, he reckoned you’d have to be blind not to. And if he was totall  honest, since he’d seen her the first time in that little boxing gym in New York he had noticed how pretty she was. She had the figure of the stars of his time. Hour glass waist, brunette hair, shapely ass and legs and quite large breasts considering she was so slim. But what did it for him were her eyes. Deep, warm green pools that he could lose himself in quite happily.
All those times he'd felt irritation at other men looking at her or touching her, all those times he'd looked at her and just wanted to smile because she was just her... the fear he had felt when he had known she was off chasing the Mandarin and he wasn’t able to help...none of that was anything to do with mere friendship.
He leaned his forehead against the tiles of the shower cubicle and groaned. He was crushing on his best friend. He was so fucked. *******
Katie’s desk arrest didn’t last long. 2 weeks later she was catapulted back into the field, on what was supposed to be a simple op, simple by SHIELD standards, anyway. They had a request from the Cuban government – all very hush, hush, of course –to take down a drug lord who ran the cartel SHIELD had tangled with last year.
Katie read the files, all the intel, pulled together a briefing and delivered it, answering questions that came her way from the team and then handed over to Steve when it was his turn to take the floor. He started issuing out his orders, and informed everyone that the 3 newest recruits would be joining them as it would be a fairly straight forward op to ease them into.
And it had been, for the most part, until one of those new recruits, Steven Adams, had frozen mid fire fight and as a consequence he’d taken 3 bullets to the chest.
“I got him…” Katie said, calmly taking aim at the hostile responsible and as soon as she knew she’d hit him, she broke cover to get to Adams, as she was closest to him. She skidded to the floor, pressing her hand to his chest and her other reached to his face, turning it to look at her.
“I got you…Adams…look at me…” she said gently, her hand warm, wet and slick with the young man’s blood. Steve dropped besides her and she turned to face him.
“I can’t stop the bleeding…” she said, her tone giving away exactly how worried she was.
“Medic, NOW!” Steve yelled, looking around frantically for help “We need emergency evac…”
“This is just like Coulson all over again…” Katie mumbled to no one in particular as she reached into her belt and retrieved a tab of morphine. Steve gripped the young man’s hand as she administered the pain relief.
“Son,look at me…” he instructed and Adams horrified eyes turned to Steve “That’s it, keep looking at me…”
Steve swallowed, figthing to keep his face calm. He’d seen that look so many times on the battle field, the look that told him the man who lay injured knew he was injured beyond repair, that there was nothing to be done for him. But this was now, 70 years into the future, medical science had worked so many wonders since then, they had to be able to do something, right?
“RUMLOW WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT MEDIC?” Katie screamed, her tone frantic.
“Still got hostiles on us!” Rumlow replied in his ear “Evans has taken 4 down but they’re approaching from the right! We need to cover the medics in and now you’re down there…”
Steve instantly looked round before he looked back at Katie “We can take him ourselves”
She bit her lip, looking at the young man, then up to Steve again. Everything in their training told them not to move casualties, but Steve knew if they stayed here he was going to bleed out.Katie seemed to come to the same conlcusion a she nodded.
"Alright…Brock, we’re coming to you. Have the medics prep the bay…Evans, we need top cover…”
“Roger, Nova…”
“Steven… we’re gonna move you now.” she said, looking at him, her voice calm and level. She took his hand out of Steve’s which allowed the captain to haul him into a lift over his shoulder. Once he had the man positioned he gave a small jerk of his head and Katie picked up his shield in one hand, and her pistol in the other as they broke cover, sprinting across the front of the industrial yard towards the jet. In the corner of his eye, Steve spotted 2 hostiles moving but before he could shout a warning, Katie had fired off 2 shots, the thumps and lack of returning meaning each bullet had hit its target. Soon they were joined by Rumlow who flanked them up the ramp where she dropped the shield to the floor and offered her hand back to Adams, Steve placed him gently on the stretcher.
“It’s gonna be ok…” Katie said, soothing him as the medics bustled around, glancing up every so often to watch what they were doing.
“Can you tell my mom…I love her…and dad…” Adams was mumbling now and she shook her head.
“You can tell them yourself. “she smiled “you’ll be fine, I promise…”
“We’re locked down outside, local authorities are handling it now. How’s he looking?” Rumlow asked as he stepped up besides Steve who had stood back from where Katie was knelt by the injured man. Steve turned to Rumlow, shaking his head sadly.
“Not good. He lost a lot of blood.”
At that point Katie suddenly drew back slightly, looking at the hand held in hers, before she glanced at the medic who was sadly shaking her head. Katie threw her head back closing her eyes as her face screwed up.
“Shit.” Rumlow muttered as Steve pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and middle finger.
“Radio base” he turned to Brock, his voice soft “Let’s get him home.”
*******
Writing mission reports wasn’t Katie’s favourite thing to do, but this one was awful. So she’d treated it like ripping off a band aid, and after a horrific nights sleep, she’d been at the T riskelion early to get it done. As a result it was little after 10 am, she was done for the day and was about to head home until she heard a familiar voice.
“Eat me…eat me…” The voice was accompanied by a bag from her favourite bakery, which was hovering in the space between the door and the frame, before Clint Barton’s head poked round the side, a grin plastered on his face.
“Hawkeye, you are a godsend.” she said, taking a large drink and leaning back, closing her eyes.
“That the first time you’ve lost a man on a mission?” Clint asked.
“Other than Coulson.” she shrugged. “He was 24 Clint. His whole life ahead of him.”
Clint watched as she rubbed at her temple before reaching into the bag and pulling out an almond croissant. She couldn’t remember when she had last eaten, it must have at least been before the mission.
“How’s Cap taken it?”
“On the outside he seems ok, but I know he blames himself. Keeps saying he shouldn’t have taken him.” Katie shrugged “He’s gone with Fury to see Adams’ parents. Rather him than me.”
“This job is hard.” Clint said after a moment “We fight to keep everyone safe, but y’know, sometimes not everyone makes it.
No,because that’s what we do.”
His words made sense. She knew they did, but that didn’t stop the feeling in her stomach that if she had done her research more, maybe she could have spotted something that would have told them about the armour piercing rounds.
*******
Adams’ parents already knew he was dead. Which made it slightly easier. Fury had the local authorities call ahead, common practice now, but still Steve found himself sat on their couch, talking, informing them all about their son’s last moments. They hadn’t shouted, hadn’t screamed or blamed him. Instead, they’d thanked him for what he had done and for bringing him back so they could hold a proper burial.
By the time he got back to base, he was exhausted.
“Here.” Fury said, handing him a glass of scotch from the bottle he had pulled out of his desk. Steve took it, dropping into one of the sofas at the side of the large office, Fury settling into the other. Steve knew the drink couldn’t’ get him drunk, but he liked the momentary buzz he got that lasted all of 60 seconds post sip.
The scotch was smooth, he expected nothing less from the boss. And the pair of them sat in silence for a few moments.
“Ever done that before, a death message?” Fury asked, leaning back.
“Can’t say I have. Wasn’t really my job back in the day.” Steve said, undoing his tie.
“Worst part of the job. Doesn’t matter how many times you do it, never gets any easier.” Fury ran his hand over his face, and it struck Steve how tired his boss actually looked.
“Yeah, it isn’t exactly up there with my favourite thing to do.” he said, rolling the tie up and shoving it into his old Army uniform pocket.
“How’s Nova?” Fury asked.
“She’s upset.” Steve sighed “But she’s strong, she’ll be ok. I’m gonna head over and see how she is later.”
“You two spend a lot of time together outside of work.” Fury commented, innocently enough but there was something in his tone, something that was almost good natured accusation.
“Not a problem is it, Sir?” Steve asked, face straight.
“No, not at all.” Fury said “Why do you think I partnered you up in the first place? She’s a people person…”
“She’s a good friend.” Steve nodded “We get on.”
“Glad to hear it.” Fury said “There’s going to be a debrief with the Secretary of Defense tomorrow.”
Steve sighed “If they’re looking to blame someone, the buck stops with me. I should never have taken the kid.”
“Bullshit.” Fury said simply “I’ve read the reports. From what they say, he just froze.”
“He wasn’t experienced enough.”
“It was a straight forward in and out job Captain.” Fury leaned forward. “What happened was an accident. A tragic one, but an accident none the less. From the reports, neither you nor Stark could have done any more to save his life.”
Steve shrugged, the words were kind but didn’t help him feel any better.
“Taking risks is part of this job.” Fury said simply “It’s a dangerous gig.”
3 glasses of scotch and an hour later he shook the director’s hand and left the office, pulling out his phone. He didn’t want to appear like he was checking up on Katie, so he pinged her a text, dressing it up like it was him who needed to see her, which wasn’t a complete lie. He did, he was craving the normality she gave him.
Can I come over? I could do with seeing a friendly face
He read it a few times, before deciding it was casual enough before he sent it. The reply was almost instantaneous.
My door is always open for you. And I made Mac and Cheese…plenty left.
He couldn’t help but smile. One of the best things about this “new life” was the food, and her Mac and Cheese was frankly his favourite thing to eat on the planet. He shot a message back.
He changed into a pair of sweat and a hoody, hastily making his way to her penthouse and the the smile she gave him when he walked into her place instantly made him feel at ease.
“Hey…” she said, crossing the space towards him and giving him a hug which he happily melted into, a hug they both needed.
“how did it go?” she asked, pulling away.
“As well as can be expected.” He sighed as he followed her into the kitchen, dropping into the stool on the other side of the breakfast bar. “His mom broke down but…they were ok about it. They didn’t shout or yell…”
She flipped the lid off a beer and handed it to him. He took it, with a nod of thanks and pulled a large swig as he sat back down, staring at the bottle in his hand.
He was brooding and blaming himself, Katie could tell so she gently lay her hand on his, reaching over the counter.
“it wasn’t your fault Steve.” she said, gently. She did that all the time, knew what he was thinking. It gave him the unnerving impression that sometimes she could read his mind.
“I should have spotted that shooter…” he said, shaking his head.
“I’m the fucking mission analyst.” she sighed. “I knew from last time those guys were packing, if I’d done more research, maybe I would have found out about the armour piercing rounds…”
“You can’t seriously blame yourself?” Steve’s head shot up unable to believe she actually thought that.
“Why not?” she sighed sadly. She’d been over it a million times in her head that day and had come to the same conclusion every time. She should have spotted something, dug further. “I didn’t do my job.”
“Yes, you did.” he implored, his eyes locking onto hers “Your report clearly set out the layout, the learning from previous missions…Abrams was just too inexperienced, I should never have taken him…”
There was a pause as the microwave pinged and Katie turned to look at it.
“You know, Clint made a good point before.” she said, reaching in for the plate and the smell of the food made his stomach grumble again as she continued “This job, it’s hard. We fight to keep people safe but not everyone makes it back all the time…and if we can’t learn to live with that then maybe next time no one gets saved.”
“It feels like trading lives.” He said as she placed the plate down in front of him “It’s just wrong.”
“I know…” she said, handing him some cutlery and sat down next to him.
“You eaten?” he asked, looking at her, suddenly aware she didn’t have a plate. She nodded.
“Couldn’t have waited until now, I’d have starved to death…” she said, shrugging.
“No, that’s not… I mean you’re tiny…” he said, almost choking on his food through his protests.
“So now you’re making short jokes?” She said back, Steve looked at her, dismayed she thought he was picking on her but then he spotted the look in her eyes and rolled his own.
“Punk.”
“Jerk” she shot back.
It was the perfect way to escape the trauma and stress of the last few days. Once they had finished eating the two of them flopped down on her large L shape sofa, Steve’s legs extended along one side of the L shape, her legs on the other as she leaned against his shoulder. He couldn’t help but notice the smell of her shampoo…apple, he thought, along with her perfume. Her proximity was making his head buzz but he wasn’t about to move her. The contact was comforting, clearly for her as well as about an hour or so into the film- the first in the Lord of The Rings trilogy- he felt her head growing heavy. He glanced down and saw that her eyes were closed and as he watched her head slipped slightly. He shifted so that he could catch her gently, and grabbed a cushion from behind him. He placed it against his leg and manouvered her head so that she was lay down, gently brushing her hair off her face.
Pondering for a moment, he decided to do neither, reaching for the remote as he sifted through to find something else to watch. He didn’t want to leave just yet, he was too comfy and too at ease. Picking one of his favourites, Casablanca, he settled down, getting himself comfy as he immersed himself in the familiar world of Rick’s Café Americain. At one point he felt his eyes growing heavy and he lay his head back, deciding to rest them for just a little while…
Cold air was blasting his hair back…there was a hole in the side of the train…then a flash of light and Bucky flew straight through the hole.
“Steve…” Katie was doing her best to wake him from his obvious nightmare after he had jolted her awake, thrashing in his sleep. She placed both her hands on his shoulder and shook him. Softly at first, then a bit stronger, trying to shake him out of his sleep. His face contorted into a silent scream and then he jerked awake, his eyes wide, breathing deeply. It took him a while but he suddenly realised where he was and whose eyes were looking at him he took a shaky breath and lay his head back.
Damned it, he’d fallen asleep and had a nightmare. On her sofa.
“Shit…sorry…” he said, his voice croaky “I err…”
“Don’t apologise, it’s fine.” Katie said, gently “I’ll get you a glass of water.”
Whilst she was gone he leaned forward, swinging his legs off the couch so his feet touched the floor, wiping his clammy head with his hands.
“Thanks…” he said as she handed him the glass. He took a large gulp, his breathing returning to normal.
“You ok?” she asked, kindly as her hand gently knotted into his, her concern evident.
“Yeah, just a nightmare…” he said softly “I’ve not had one for a while.”
“Understandable with what’s happened.” she said softly “What was it about?”
“It was…just Bucky.” he said shaking his head, “I saw him fall…”
“You know you can talk to me about it Stevie.” she said softly “It might help.”
“They’re always the same.” he said, shaking his head, swallowing thickly “I either replay him falling or me going into the ice…”
She didn’t speak, simply waited for him to continue and for a moment she though he wasn’t going to, but then after a sigh he leaned forward and placed the glass on the table and ran his hands over his face again.
“It was a Hydra train,” he started, “We had a tip that Zola, a Hydra scientist was traveling somewhere and thought that it was our chance to capture him. One step closer to taking down Hydra. There was a blast from one of their weapons and it bounced off my shield and blew open the side of the train car and Bucky was thrown out.” he blinked, swallowing  “He grabbed onto a bar and it wasn’t stable, and he fell.”
Katie stayed silent for a moment before her hand curled round his shoulder and she pulled him to her, causing him to lay his head on her shoulder. “You know it wasn’t your fault.”
“I should have done more” he said softly. The guilt ate him up every day, that he had survived, why had he deserved that any more than Bucy?
“How?” she said again. “How could you have done anymore?”
"I should have gone after him.” he said quietly.
“What would’ve changed if you had?” Katie asked “There’s no way he could have survived that fall.”
“He wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for me.“ he said softly, "I should have gone after him, brought him home, done something.”
Katie remained quiet, her hand gently running through his hair which was nice, far too nice. He took a deep breath and sat up moving away from her touch.
"What time is it?” he asked, clearing his throat.
“Nearly six in the morning” Katie replied
“You’re kidding?” Steve snorted.
“Nope. You want some coffee?” she asked, standing up.
“Yeah if that’s ok…” he replied, following her to the kitchen. From her body language he could tell she was rolling her eyes, even if she wasn’t facing him.
“I don’t know if your Ma ever told you, but it’s rude to run out on a girl after you spend the night with her.”
“And as you know, I’m useless with women.” he said, as he sat down at the barstool on the breakfast bar. He watched her, but he didn’t say anything. She bustled about, throwing some bread in the toaster and went to the fridge for the butter, marmalade and jam, sliding them onto the island. At that point Steve held his hands up.
“You don’t have to-” he started to say, but she silenced him with a glare, similar to the ones Peggy used to give him, the look that could stop him in his tracks it was that stern.
“Shut up.” she said, pouring them both a cup of the coffee before adding milk and a spoon of sugar to both, passing one to him. The bread popped up from the toaster, and she put it on a plate before handing it to him and adding more bread to the machine.
His stomach rumbled and he gave in, smearing butter over his toast. He eyed the jam curiously. He’d had marmalade before but…he looked at Katie and she nodded. “It’s good…”
So he added some, and after a bite he concluded she was right, and nodded in agreement. Once the next round of toast was done she sat next to him.
“So…when did I fall asleep.” she asked, swallowing her food.
“About an hour into the film.” he said, taking another bite of his toast.
She shook her head “What an ass…”
“It wasn’t a problem.” He replied honestly with a shrug, chewing his breakfast “to be honest I enjoyed it.”
She looked at him “What, me drooling on your leg?”
He swallowed, his eyes wide “I meant the film.”
“I know…” she smirked, and he rolled his eyes before he smiled softly.
“Punk…”

The Wacky Story of How China's Navy Got Aircraft Carriers
China was proud to launch its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, in 2012. This vessel was a refit of an incomplete Soviet Kuznetsov-class cruiser carrier. However, the story of how China got that ship in the first place may as well be a comedy—because the carrier was actually a rogue acquisition for the Chinese military against the wishes of the government in Beijing.

Key Point: So if there’s a moral to the story of the Varyag, it’s not to expect too much gratitude for your good deeds . . . and always keep the receipt.
And it was undertaken by a basketball player who claimed he wanted to build a floating casino.
The People's Liberation Army Navy first became interested in acquiring an aircraft carrier in 1970, when China was still on bad terms with both the Soviet Union and the United States. However few concrete steps were taken, because the cost and complexity of such an endeavor far exceeded the PLAN’s limited capabilities during the Cold War.
The Soviet Navy did deploy its first carriers in the 1970s: Kiev-class vessels that could launch Yak-38 Forger jump jets of limited effectiveness. By the 1980s, the Soviets began construction of two more promising Kuznetsov-class carriers. These had a “ski jump” ramp, allowing more conventional—and much higher-performing—Su-33 Flanker fighters to take off from it. Like the earlier Kiev class, the Kuznetsov was technically an “aircraft-carrying cruiser” due its powerful armament of twelve P-700 Granit antiship missile systems. This technicality was important, as “aircraft carriers” proper weighing more than fifteen thousand tons (which is to say, virtually all aircraft carriers today) were not legally permitted by the Montreux Convention to transit from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean via the Bosporus Straits.
However, the fall of the Soviet Union left the second vessel in its class, the Varyag, only two-thirds complete in Ukraine, lacking its armament and electrical systems. Construction ceased in 1992, and the cash-strapped Ukrainian government did its best to pawn off the fifty-five thousand tons of inoperable metal rusting in its Mykolaiv shipyard. Russia, India and China all passed.
A two-part series in the South China Morning Post in 2015 revealed the machinations behind how the carrier ended up in Chinese service anyway, two decades later. It turns out the PLA Navy did want the Varyag—the team sent to inspect it recommended purchasing it! But the government in Beijing was worried that acquiring a carrier might increase tensions at a time when it was seeking to further open itself to Western investors.
Instead, in 1996 a group of PLA officers including intelligence chief Gen. Ji Shengde approached Xu Zengping, a former PLA basketball star who had become a successful businessman arranging international events. The cabal’s proposal: to have Xu purchase the carrier as a private citizen, ostensibly to serve as a casino so as to avoid undesirable scrutiny. Then the PLAN could collect it for its own use once the political winds were more favorable.
This cover story is not as ridiculous as it sounds. Remember those Kiev-class carriers mentioned earlier? Two of them are now moored in China, serving as amusement parks. The Minsk was actually purchased by a consortium of video-game arcade owners in Shenzhen for $4.4 million, and has since been moved to Nantong, north of Shanghai. And the original Kiev? Now a floating hotel in Tianjin. However, the more modern Kuznetsov-class Varyag was undoubtedly of much greater practical interest for the PLAN than either of those ships.
Xu was down with the scheme and borrowed the equivalent of $30 million in Hong Kong dollars from a friend to help fund the venture—the first expense of which was to create a $6 million shell company in Macau called Agência Turística e Diversões Chong Lot Limitada, in order to maintain the fiction. (Macau was still in its last years as a Portuguese colony at the time.)
In January 1998, Xu arrived in Ukraine and met with the shipyard owners. After four days of negotiations, in which enormous bribes were offered and fifty bottles of 124-proof baijiu liquor were consumed, he reached an agreement to purchase the carrier for $20 million—well below the cost of a single jet fighter today. He wasn’t able to make the payment until a year later, with a $10 million extra late fee tacked on.
Some international observers smelled something fishy in the arrangement—Xu’s company did not actually have a gambling permit in Macau, nor a listed phone number or address. Ironically, however, a Jane’s analyst interviewed by the Washington Post at the time stated it was “farfetched” that the PLA Navy would try to operate the Varyag due to its decrepit and incomplete condition.
By June 2000, everything was ready to go. The carrier’s four engines were packed in grease seals (they had yet to be installed), several tons of blueprints were sent overland to China by truck, and a Dutch towing company was ready to tug the 306-meter-long vessel all the way back to China. What could go wrong?
Ever been stunned by the towing fee after your car breaks down far from home? Imagine that, but around five hundred times worse. Why five hundred? Because that equals the roughly five hundred days the Liaoning was stuck being towed in circles off Istanbul, after the Turkish government denied it passage to the Mediterranean via the Bosporus Straits.
The Turkish maritime minister argued that should there be a mishap towing the 306-meter-long carrier—which could not maneuver or move on its own power—it might spin around and block the Bosporus straits to all shipping, or run into one of the bridges connecting the two halves of Istanbul. The straits are only seven hundred meters wide at their narrowest point and require at least six major course corrections to navigate. Hundreds of ships had suffered accidents there in the past. Curiously, the Chinese appear to have perceived the Turkish refusal to be in retaliation for China’s opposition to the NATO air campaign in Yugoslavia the previous year.
The Liaoning spent sixteen months racking up $8,500 a day in towing fees. Finally, Beijing had a change of heart on the matter, and stepped in on August 2001, promising major concessions on tourism to persuade the Turks to let the Varyag pass.
Finally on November 1, in an operation involving more than two dozens tug and emergency vessels, the Varyag was towed through the Bosporus without incident, and traversed the Dardanelles the next day. The hard part was over.
Except for the sea storm with sixty-mile-per-hour winds that struck the rudderless vessel off the island of Skyros two days later, causing it to snap its tow lines. It took two more days to recover the runaway carrier. Tragically, a Portuguese sailor fell to his death while helping reconnect it to its tugs.
Once under power, a normal vessel could have taken the shortcut through the Suez Canal and straight on back to China via the Indian Ocean. But the canal would not accept powerless vessels such as the Varyag, so it had to cruise all the way around Africa, Vasco de Gama–style, chugging along at a brisk jog of seven miles per hour.
In March 2002, the carrier finally arrived at the port of Dalian in Liaoning province, which would lend the carrier its name in Chinese service. Three years later, it was put into a dry dock to allow for an extensive refit process, including sandblasting away all the rust and restoring and installing the engines in 2011.
The PLAN intended to operate the vessel as a pure carrier, rather than as a cruiser-carrier hybrid, so the shipbuilders didn’t bother with the enormous antiship missile systems. They instead confined its armament to a trio of short-range HQ-10 air-defense missile launchers and a few close-defense guns. The vessel’s primary weapon, of course, would be its complement of twenty-four J-15 Flying Shark fighters. The Flying Sharks are domestic copies of the Russian Su-33 fighter, a prototype of which was also acquired from Ukraine in 2001. The Liaoning also flies six Z-12F antisubmarine helicopters, four airborne early-warning variants and two Z-9 rescue choppers.
The Liaoning was commissioned on September 25, 2012, and the first J-15 landed on it a month later. A home-built carrier based upon the Liaoning will soon put to sea this year; those blueprints must have proved useful.
The Liaoning is hardly equal to a U.S. supercarrier—in addition to its smaller air wing and lack of a nuclear power plant, its steam turbines are prone to breaking down and the ski-jump deck limits the fuel and weapons load its fighters can carry. However, it afforded China a leap forward in its naval construction program—which now includes five more carriers in the coming decade of increasing planned capability. According to Xu Zengping, a naval officer told him that the Varyag saved China fifteen years of research and development.
So was Xu richly rewarded for his initiative? He was rewarded with bills: $120 million in all in Xu’s estimation, forcing him to sell his decadent home in Hong Kong and spend all of the intervening years paying his lenders back. You see, General Ji was jailed in 2001 for his involvement in a massive smuggling ring in the city of Xiamen—so the cabal of officers that set Xu up for the task was no longer around to see that he was compensated.
Beijing did pay for the $20 million value of the carrier—but argued that it couldn’t cover other costs because he lacked receipts. Apparently, invoices—or fapiao in Mandarin—don’t come standard with bribes paid to Ukrainian businessmen. And, as one quickly learns in China, you always need the official fapiao.
So if there’s a moral to the story of the Varyag, it’s not to expect too much gratitude for your good deeds . . . and always keep the receipt.

Chapter 52 - Deer, dog tags and microwaves
In the previous chapter: Angie agrees to go out with Dave. Eddie keeps calling to talk to her and she has to spill the beans and tell Meg what happened in San Diego, she also tries to explain her point of view on the matter and why she's avoiding him. Grace and Meg planned to spend the evening together at Meg's place. Eventually Grace remains alone in the apartment for a few minutes and that's when Stone calls. Gossard is tender as always with her and she almost seems intimidated by his behaviour. Grace speaks to Eddie too and since she doesn't know about the kiss between Angie and him, she decides to shake things up a little and make him jealous by telling him about Angie going out with Dave that night. Eddie takes it really bad. Grace thinks her plan worked until she tells Meg and finds out where Angie and Eddie are really at. Once Angie comes back home  the girls finally have her call Eddie and tell him the truth. Angie confronts Eddie and reveals Dave has just started dating Jennifer, L7's bassplayer, and she simply went to one of their concerts with him so he wouldn't go alone and feel awkward. Eddie apologizes to Angie and confesses what he feels for her in a way he never managed to do before. Angie's friends hear it all since they forced her to put him on speakerphone.
***
Strong fragrance used in perfumery. Four letters. Starts with an M. Magnolia! No, it's eight. Mango... Mandarine... Ugh what the fuck? I strangely managed to put my hands on the copy of the Seattle Times that sometimes we happen to buy before Angie, so she hasn't done the crossword yet. But now I guess I'll have to ask my friend for help because I don't know how to go on.
“So, what was I saying? Oh yeah, I turn up at the table, usual protocol greeting with smile incuded, I ask the woman what she's having and she asks, literal words, a cheeseburger without chees and some fries” the door of her bedroom is open, I cautiously look inside and see her on the phone. Of course I already know who she's talking to. Since that night when Grace and I managed to convince her to call poor Eddie, there have been lots more calls, every day. Unfortunately not on speakerphone. Fuck, when he was there spilling his heart all out to Angie, Grace and I melted in sighs and aaaaaws and Vedder almost caught us. Am I nosey? Yes. I meddle in other people's love life to avoid thinking of the disaster which is mine? Yes, I do. Am I also genuinely happy things are going great for my friend as she deserves though? I am!
“Wait. I'm just standing there, kind of confused for how she spoke, then I reply: great, I'll take you the Go-go meal with hamburger + fries + medium drink for $ 4,99. Well, basically she doesn't even let me finish talking and says: No, no, I don't want a hamburger. I want a cheeseburger with no cheese” Angie rocks left and right on the swivel chair as she listens her sweetheart's answer with a big smile on her face.
“Exactly! Hahaha same thing I told her: So... you mean... a hamburger, madam? NO! She says, very bitterly. I said I don't want any hamburger, I asked for a simple cheeseburger with no cheese! I swear she was yelling, I was so ashamed for me but for her too” Angie rotates a little more on her chair, sees me and nods at me.
“I didn't bat an eyelid and said: So you wanna pay one dollar more for a cheeseburger but you want it without the cheese?” Angie and I burst our laughing together as I enter her room, then she goes on “Yes, that's the point, 'cause the Cheeseburger menu costs more, that's the most absurd thing! If I take an order as cheeseburger, even if I tell the guys in the kitchen not to put cheese in it, it'll still be considered as a cheeseburger. Well, you know what, this bitch widens her eyes to me and goes like: Yes, exactly! Was it so difficult for you to understand? Ahahah yeah, I told you, she was a bitch!”
“The customer's always right!” I state as I sit on her bed.
“Hey, you and Meg said the same thing almost at the same time! Anyway, since the customer's always right and this woman had just basically told me I was an idiot, whereas she was the real idiot, I cheerfully replied: Not at all, madam. There goes a Marilyn meal with cheesburger with no cheese + fries + medium drink for €5,99 for you, ok? And the bitch: Yes, that's it, now you're talking. Thank you. Oh fuck you! Hehe... wait a second, ok?” Angie laughs with Eddie, then takes the phone off her ear slightly and addresses me “Did you need anything?”
“Strong fragrnce used in perfumerie, starts with an M, four letters” I ask her, showing the newspaper.
“Musk” she answers in a couple of seconds. Yes! That was it! Why didn't I think about it. I hate her.
“Yeah, it can be actually”
“It cannot be, it actually is!” she gloats then puts the receiver back against her ear “What? Did you know it too? He knew it too”
“Well thank you both but there's no need to brag!” I throw a pillow at Angie, who manages to dodge it, then takes it up from the floor.
“Sadly used in perfumerie I'd add... What do you mean why? Musk is extremely harmful, both the synthetic and the natural one... Well, in doubt, I'd rather not have to choose between either the total extinction of an animal species or pollution and maybe choose other kinds of perfumes, don't you think? What? What animal? What do you mean? You know where does musk come from, right?” a debate starts between Angie and Eddie and I can only hear one side of it, which I think it's the most consistent part anyway “Plant? What plant? Musk is not a plant! I mean, yeah, there's also some plant but that's not what's used to make perfumes. No! It's an animal secretion, from a deer, the musk deer. No, I'm not kidding, Eddie, I swear! There deer have a gland, like a small sack under their belly, that emits this substance and they spread it around to mark their territory, especially during mating season... Hahahaha no, Eddie, it's not deer's sperm!”
Not the typical conversation between lovers, right?
“Anyway now it's basically all synthetic” I remark once I write the correct word in the puzzle.
“That's even worse because it's extremely polluting and ends up in the food chain.” Angie answers both to me and Eddie “What? Hahaha no, don't buy me musk perfume, thank you. And don't buy me any presents in general... you already did too many... yes you did... yes you did... Eddie? Please... Come on...” now we're back to more couple stuff, Angie holds the pillow tighter and tighter and I think it's time to get out of here and go back to my room. Well, or to keep eavesdropping from outside without being seen.
“Wait, Meg! Yes, I'm gonna ask her now.” I stand up and am about to leave, walking backwards and waving bye, but Angie stops me “Will you go and see the guys tomorrow in Portland?”
“Yeah, that's the plan. Grace and Laura are coming too”
“Did you hear that? Meg, Grace and Laura, the perfect trio ready to cheer and throw bras at you”
“Haha I've got very little to throw!”
“No, Eddie, I told you, I can't... Roxy will kill me, it's even a Thursday, the night school nurses finish earlier... I can't take another day off”
I see our little Romeo is impatient. His dreams started to break when he found out Kelly had planned a series of radio promos and interviews right during the two days break between the two Oregon shows and that he'd have to wait before coming back to Settle. Eddie tried to avoid it by explaining that he doesn't really count in Stone and Jeff's band and that they could do the job but apparently it didn't work.
“Come on, I'll see you the day after tomorrow, no big change... Oh shut up, it doesn't change anything... Hahaha no!” I'm still here standing in the middle of Angie's room while she plays arond with that pillow and I'd really want to know what was that last no about but I know my friend will never tell me.
“Say hi to him, ok?” this time I leave for real, yet stopping in the hallway 'cause, as I said, I haven't learned how to mind my own business yet.
“Meg says hi! Anyway I was thinking of something. Hahaha no, not that! I was thinking, if the girl come to see you tomorrow... well, for someone it'll be like losing that famous bet once again... don't you think? Hehehe I have no idea, I don't know Portland, I don't know if there are any 70s discos in town, you should ask Stone. No no, ask him, I'm sure he'd be willing to set one up by himself so he could make fun of the losers! Haha yeah, that'd be a can't-miss event. Oh yeah? Why? Uh sure, my presence would definitely make the difference”
The lovebirds' phone call goes on for a little while, with Eddie probably telling her something sweet and Angie joking about it, maybe because of her natural embarrassment or because she knows exactly I'm right her listening to them. After she ends the call, she dispels my uncertainty.
“Meg!”
I keep my mouth shut.
“Meg? Come on, I know you're there!”
“Uhm? I was going to the bathroom” I magically show up back on the doorway, right in time to be the target of a weak pillow throw.
“Sure...”
“So?” I sit back on her bed, waiting for Angie to finally share something without me trying to forcefully extort information from her.
“Grace is coming with you tommorrow then?” Angie immediately kills all my hopes.
“Yeah, she is”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I called her in the morning and she told me she's in. Why?”
“I don't know, it's just... she doesn't really look like she can't wait to see Stone... does she? Am I wrong? I mean, it sounds strange but...”
“Wait a minute. Angela Pacifico... gossiping?!!”
“Hahaha fuck you, Meg!”
“Who are you? What did you do to my roommate?” I stand up straight, pointing at her with a trembling hand.
“I'm not gossiping, I'm just worrying about a couple of friends”
“Worrying huh?” I pull my arm down and snicker at her.
“Two dear friends I care about. And look cute together. And Grace seemed really into it at the beginning but now... meh... I mean, do you think there's something we don't know?” the new gossip queen is beating around the bush and I decide to play along. Also because one more conversation about Grace is one less about me and my non existent love life.
“Nah, I think it's normal. Grace had a crush and Stone played it cool. Now he doesn't act all cool anymore and she's confused, that's it”
“Stone looks pretty straight forward to me”
“Oh yeah, actually... He reminds me of someone else we know” this time I can't help picking on her but she rolls her eyes and goes on.
“He basically thinks they're a couple already, whereas she kind of shut him off” sure, a kind of behaviour you're really familiar with, right Angie? I don't say it loud this time.
“She will open up tomorrow, trust me”
“I don't want them to suffer, that's all” my friend shrugs and plays with the phone still in her hands. Are you saying this to yourself maybe?
“So... no musk perfume?” I aske her after a while and Angie starts rocking on her chair again.
“Haha no, please!”
“I have to remind Eddie to take one that's fruit scented” I wink at her while she puffs and takes a 360 degrees spin.
“Please...”
“Banana would be perfect”
“MEG!”
“What? What did I say?!”
****************************************************************************************************************************
Beer pong. Twenty six years old and I still play beer pong? Well, Kim's thirty and he organizes tournaments of these fucking games. It should console me. Twenty six, a steady relationship, a serious music project, a bank account that allows me to pay my bills without struggling at the end of the month... and I wake up at six in the morning in my bassplayer's bathtub. Fucking back pain! And why the fuck am I still in this shitty condo? I curse as I insist pressing the button to call for the elevator tht will never come. Then I give up to climb up four flights of stairs.
I drag my tired bones up to the door of my apartment but when I put my hand in my pocket looking for the keys the cold metal feeling is replace by total void. I can't fucking believe it. Did Matt have to find himself a girlfriend right now? I quickly feel up all the pockets in my jacket and in my pants, can't find shit and punch the door.
“Fuck” as throw the punch I clearly hear the clink sound of keys and I try and search better but I can't find anything. I punch the door once more and there's the sound again. I start jumping in place like a moron in front of the door and at every jump there's a jingle. I take off my jacket, shake it, same sound. I inspect each and every pocket more attentively and I find something: not the keys but a big hole in the left pocket. Mistery solved! Now I only have to use that little lucidity I've got left to determine the exact position of the keys inside the lining of my jacket and take them out. As I try to take them, I can hear another sound, not metallic but “human”, that catches my attention. A voice, like someone hummig very quietly without words. At first I think maybe it's someone singing while shaving or dressing up, after all it's morning for the rest of the world. But I can clearly hear this voice, although it's faint, and has a little echo that makes me thing the person's already left home. So why am I not seeing anyone passing? I walk through the hallway and I'm still feeling my jacket for the keys when I turn the corner and see him: Vedder, sitting on the floor, well on the mat just outside the girls' apartment, writing on a notebook, with a paperbag on his legs.
“Eddie?” I call him 'cause he doesn't seem to notice me.
“Oh, hey, hi Chris” Eddie stops writing and says hi, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
“What are you doing here? Aren't you on tour?”
“It's over! I mean, technically it ends on 3rd March but since the last three shows are here in Seattle we're basically done. I mean, we're done touring. Away” Eddie calmly explains, clicking his pen and putting it inside the notebook, then putting it all in the inside pocket of his jacket. As he does this, I can see his t-shirt: a white one with Air love bone written on it and the silhouette of a long haired basket player looking more like Jeff rather than Jordan. I've got one of those t-shirts too but mine is dark blue.
“Aren't you supposed to play in Oregon?”
“We were, we played in Portland last night. Small crowd but good atmosphere, great show” Eddie nods at himself and doesn't get up.
“Did you play yesterday? And when did you get back?”
“What time is it now? Uh half past seven. Well, a few hours ago”
“Hehe so you guys jumped on the van and dashed back home right after the show, right? You couldn't wait huh?” I guess he was especially looking forward to it. It's not like Eddie has ever told me anything about this stuff, I'm neither his confidant nor Jeff. But maybe I'm one of those, together with Ament and a few other people, who knows him a little better. Anyway it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you're here outside a girl's door instead of at home in your bed to sleep the tour off, well, there's something big going on.
“Well, ehm, I don't know about this... I mean, don't know what the others did, I... I came back by myself” for a second Eddie loses his apparent composure.
“By yourself?”
“Yeah”
“How?”
“Hitchhiking” he replies raising his thumb.
“Hitchhiking?”
“Yes”
“You mean, you dropped everything and said I'm out of here, bye and hitchhiked to Seattle?”
“Village People inspired me”
“Uh?”
“Do you want to spend the night? Do you know the song?”
“Are you fucking high, Ed?”
At that point he explains it's about one of the infamous bets of Stone and Jeff and that part of our friends performed in the Melody Ballroom's parking lot. I know the place. I played that venue and I even saw Fugazi there. It's always made me smile thinking that they also do wedding and high school dances in that place. Well, congrats to the owner's versatility and open mindness.
“And at some point I thought: what the fuck am I doing here? And I asked some guys I already saw at some of our shows here if they could give me a ride” the reason he had this sudden realisation is right on the other side of that door, we both know, but none of us feels the need to point it out.
“And why did it take you so long?”
“Well, not that long...”
“How long have you been sitting on that fucking mat?” I ask when I finally find my fucking keys and try to fish them out.
“No, well, I've been here for an hour. Maybe two”
“And why?”
“Because it was too early”
“So fans dropped you here and then you noticed it was too early?”
“No, they didn't drop me here”
“And where?”
“At Pike Place” he answers like it's obvious and I'm stupid for asking.
“Pike Place” I nod and repeat, going along with him as you do with crazy people.
“I had to buy something” he adds grabbing the paper bag and putting it aside on the floor on his left side.
“But isn't it closed?” I ask skeptical.
“Bakeries open early”
“Ah” playing along, yeah, that's the best strategy.
“I had a coffee, something to eat, bought something for Angie, then came here”
“Hitchhiking?”
“Hahaha what? No, by street car!” once again he replies as if I'm the dork and maybe he's not entirely wrong.
“I came here and when I was about to ring the doorbell I realised it was like five o' clock in the morning”
“As another Village People's song says”
“Uhm, yeah... but what's that got to do with this?” he asks serious all of a sudden with a straight face and I basically burst out laughing at his face. With Eddie you never know if he's being serious or he's making fun of you and that's something I like in people. He surely must have understood I'm not exactly sane either, I think he learnt that the first time I took him out for a drink. Or when I showed up at the mini market and took him away after his shift ended, telling him I'd show him how local rockstars spend their friday nights. And we spent the night drinking beer and chasing my dogs, well Susan's dogs actually, in the woods.
“Hahaha nothing! So you parked your butt on that mat, right?”
“Yeah...” he answers, still confused “waiting for a more decent timing”
“Well, come on, half past seven seems acceptable” I walk up to him and try to ring the doorbell but Eddie stops me grabbing my wrist.
“No!”
“Why not?”
“I haven't heard any sounds, she hasn't waken up yet. I'll wait until she gets up” I back up and picture Eddie putting his ear against the door waiting for the sound of the microwave blip or the toilet flush and I laugh my ass off, internally. Don't wanna hurt the guy”
“What about your stuff?”
“What stuff?”
“Your things, your bags”
“Oh I only had a backpack, it's on the van. Jeff will bring it to me, I think”
“You think?”
“Well, I think so”
“But... did you tell your bandmates you were going back home?”
“Mmm... wait... oh yes, I told Mike” oh well, in that case, you really got nothing to worry about.
“Was he sober when you told him?”
“It looked like...” while Eddie begins describing Mike's state during last night's aftershow, the door he was leaning his back against abruptly opens and he falls dead weight backwards. I figure out he's still alive when he finishes the sentence from Angie's apartment's floor “... he was... yes!”
“What the fu... Eddie? Chris?” the girl gives each one of us a confused look, as she ties the belt of her pink robe.
“Hi sweetie! I found this on your doormat. No name tag but he looks well fed” I joke while Eddie's still lying on the floor.
“Hi Angie!” he exclaims enthusiastically as he looks her up in all her... sugarcandyness? Does it exist? D'uh...
“Eddie! What are you doing on the floor, get up” Angie offers him her hand and he gladly accepts, he takes her hand and grabs the doorknob and gets up.
“I fell” haha yeah, it's pretty evident you fell for that chick, you jerk.
“Did you get hurt?” she asks perplexed.
“Nah”
“He didn't hit his head, that's just his natual self, trust me. Hey Eddie, be careful” I warn him pointing at the paper bag he's almost trampling on.
“Oh fuck, thanks Chris” he takes the bag and holds it like it was a newborn baby to cradle.
“What's that?” she asks, more and more puzzled, also because she must have just got up and as first activity of the day she has to deal with two assholes.
“Breakfast!” Vedder replies, all smug and pleased with himself.
“Oh... thank you... well, let's have breakfast” Angie points back to the inside of her apartment and I guess it's time to get out of here now, considering I also found my fucking keys.
“See ya then, ok?”
“Aren't you having breakfast with us?” she asks so innocently. Eddie's look is enough for me to find the right answer.
“No, thank you sweetie, I'm too tired. And just the idea of eating or drinking something right now makes my stomach cry”
“Mmh, ok, see you later then”
“Bye Chris!” Eddie disappears into her apartment.
“Good night guys... I mean, good morning... well, you got the idea”
“Night Chris”
****************************************************************************************************************************
“What the hell were you doing out here chatting? I heard noises and-” I close the door after I make sure Chris can walk straight enough to get to his apartment and as soon as I turn around I'm swept away by Eddie who engulfs me in a hug and corners me against the door.
“Sorry if we woke you up”
“N-no, but no! I... was already awake”
“I missed you”
“Oh, ehm, I missed you too” I reply and I really hope the mouthwash I used last night really has prolonged action as the label claims because Eddie's basically breathing against my lips, rubbing his nose against mine.
“So fuckin' much...” he's getting closer and I don't know where to look, if I should look, if I should close my eyes, kiss him, wait for him to kiss me, if I should just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the moment.
But I am keeping my mouth shut...
Well, you should shut up in your mind too, you idiot!
But not thinking... it's impossible. Even thinking about not thinking... it's a thought after all, isn't it?
But why are you coming up with this shit while Eddie's torturing you so sweetly? And your hands? Where the fuck did you put your hands?
Wait, I've got them... just... hanging, mid air, I'm basically hugging him with my elbows.
With your elbows? What the fuck, are you a mechanic? Not touching people with your hands dirty with grease?! You look like the young sheperd in nonna's presepe, the marvelled one, with his hands thrown up in the air.
I manage to interrupt the inner quarrel with myself for a moment and place my hands on Eddie's shoulders. He must perceive it as a green lights signal and kisses me.
Dave Gahan is nowhere to be seen or heard and the same goes for his bandmates, uncle Tome Jones doesn't show up, no Sonny, no Cher, nobody. For a minute there I almost feel like an adult, at least until I hear castanets clanking and Phil Spector literally throws the Crystals trio on stage unceremoniously.
He kissed me in a way that I've never been kissed before
He kissed me in a way that I wanna be kissed forever more
The concert doesn't end when Eddie pulls away for a second and looks at me in the eyes, as if he was searching for something. Maybe he's trying to understand if I'm on this planet or not and he already knows there'll be no point asking me directly. I don't know what kind of answer he finds but he must like it because he smiles, perfectly showing his fucking dimples... as if I needed other stimulation! And he kisses me again. This time it's small kisses slowly going from my lips to my cheek, then down towards the neck. One of his hands moves up along my hips, it may or may not, maybe I dreamt it, brush against my left boob. He tickles my arms even through a pretty thick layer of fleece, caresses my face and buries his hand into my hair, while his neck kisses turn into bites.
I gotta do something.
But I don't want to!
But you have to, can't you see you're panicking? Do you wanna wait until your head starts spinning, you see white dots and then you pass out like a loser?
It's so delightful though.
And what if he wants to do something more delightful?
I wish...
God, Angie, pull yourself together!
“What's in the bag?” I manage to snap out of it.
“Uhm?” he mumbles still nibbling on my neck and nape.
“In the bag you brought...”
“I told you... earlier... breakfast” he replies following the same trail as before but backwards, between kisses.
“That is?”
“Croissants” he reveals before planting a kiss on my nose.
“Custard cream?” I ask, suddenly very interested and for real, not just as an excuse to break this pleasurable moment.
“And chocolate” he nods deliciously, almost in a childish way “I took them very early this morning, for you, as soon as I arrived”
“By the way, when did you arrive?”
“Early” and he tells me about his hitchhiking and the different stops and everything that led him here to my place. And I'm still one with the door, crushed against it. And against Eddie, who doesn't show any intentions to let go of me. He did all that... for me? To see me a few hours earlier than we planned?
Well he must have problems if he hitchhikes with strangers at night only to see you with sleep in your eyes, still unshowered, your teeth unbrushed and your hair pinned up messily.
“Need to be warmed up then...”
“What?”
“Croissants, they must be cold now”
“Uh! Hehe well, yeah...” why is he blushing? But most of all, how many hands does he have? Theoretically he has one still in my half up half down hair and the other one on my left hip, but I feel his touch everywhere.
“Have breakfast now? I have to be in class in like one hour” I try and come back to my senses.
“Oh... do you really have to?” and do you really have to look at me like that?
“Huh... yeah, the monographic course about Renoir's waiting for me. And today the professor is gonna explain the passage from silent to sound movies, that is a very important part, which is gonna be in the exam too, so...”
“Ok” he lets go of me but takes me by the hand and leads me into the kitchen, where I spot the paper bag on the table. I was just wondering where he put it.
No, not true, you weren't wondering, you werent' thinking about the fucking bag at all.
Ok, can we just stop! Can we just shut up and stop quarrelling here? I'm trying to remain conscious and not to miss a second of this thing. And it's breakfast time now.
Eddie's hands are on my shoulders as I take the envelope out of the bag, I quickly open it and soon find out he bought like a ton of inviting croissants.
“Is this breakfast for the whole neighborhood?” I giggle.
“No, just for us” the grip on my shoulders gets tighter and a quick scorching kiss is planted on my cheek.
“I'm gonna warm four of them, ok?”
Eddie doesn't say anything, he just kisses me on the other cheek and I don't know if I'll make it to see La Chienne.
“Are you microwaving them?” he demands as I put the plate into the small oven.
“Yeah, but for a very short time or they... ehm, or they'll get too hard... like unedible rocks” just like me, stiffening all up like a board for kisses, caresses and hugs. Like this one, the tight hug from behind, with Eddie's curls tickling my neck.
“I trust you” he whispers into my ear.
I don't, I don't trust you at all, because you clearly want me dead.
When the croissants are ready I take the steamy plate our of the microwave and basically storm out of the kitchen and reach for the couch in the living room, placing our breakfast on the coffee table, thinking I'll be safe now. Safe from what? No idea. But it's just like jumping from the frying pan into the fire because Eddie walks up, leans on me and kisses me again, with resolution, before even touching the couch sitting beside me. His determination is put into practice as he literally throws himself on me and, as expected, I think I've just got into rigid corpse mode because Eddie pulls away almost immediately.
“Are you alright?”
“Huh? Yeah”
“Is there something wrong?”
“No, why?”
“Are you sure? You look... strange” he goes on with his inquiring ocean blue eyes that I'm looking up to and that look even deeper from such a close priviledged position.
“No, it's just... well, it's late and-”
“Too much?”
“Well, not too late but...”
“No, I mean... me... what I'm doing... Too much? Too fast?”
“NO!” I basically yell at his face so loud that I almost mess his hair. A devilish grin appears on his face and at this point I'm sure he totally knows the effect he has on me “Ehm no, it's not that, it's just... I really have class and I can't...”
“You're perfectly right, I'm sorry.” Eddie gives me a tiny little kiss on the lips that leaves me wanting ten thousand more just now and sits back down “And croissants are getting cold, that'd be a pity” he adds with a dimpled smile as he takes one with custard cream.
What about me? No, I definitely don't run the croissants' risk.

How do you think the mind of each one would look like???
Oh jeez.
This is a really good question, and something I’ve actually thought about for my OC’s. (After reading, of all things, an MLP fic years back.)
Hmmm.
I’m going to stick these under a readmore because. It got long.
Antauri
Prior to the I, Chiro saga, I feel like Antauri’s would be very tranquil. Perhaps it would resemble Koralodal, or maybe even just a sort of… cloudscape. Cloud city? (Maybe the clouds are pink, and resemble cotton candy. Maybe they aren’t.) It’s all very soft and hazy. Dreamlike. But, if you look below the surface, there is a storm, full of monsters and troubles.
I feel like after the I, Chiro saga that storm is more prevalent than before. If it resembled Koralodal, then the city might be fractured and broken. There are ghosts of his old friends–the Alchemist appears after they learn about him; Mandarin is there; as is Xan. Sprx, under the Fire of Hate. Monster-Gibson, even.
In his mind, Antauri is still his season 1-2 self. His robotic self still lurks–but as one of his inner demons.
Nova
Nova’s mental landscape is very… pink. All of those girly, frilly things she loves that we see her hiding from the others are on full display. But so is her fighting equipment; her warrior’s spirit. Nova’s mind is a very balanced place, where inner demons are dealt with in the ring. But there are a few locked up, in the corners of her mind; ones she can’t bring herself to face.
Most of them wear familiar faces.
Sprx
Sprx’s mental landscape has always been turbulent. In seasons 1-2, its a very fast-paced place, mostly focused on ships. There’s a lot of open skies, and maybe a crowd of fans. (These fans are quick to turn at any mistake, however, and so the others may tease him for it at first, but they quickly find that things are not entirely as they seem.)
When he gets angry, it storms. There’s probably a version of Nova who adores him.
But there’s also a version of Gibson who treats him more like an equal. (Note: I’m not saying that Gibson treats him badly. Both aren’t the greatest toward the other at times. But I feel like while Gibson is insecure because he feels like they only keep him around for his intellect, I also feel like Sprx feels that Gibson looks down on him for not being as much of a brainiac.)
Season 3 doesn’t bring a lot of change. The crowd is maybe a little less friendly. Mental Nova is maybe gone, or perhaps a more realistic version. Things are more turbulent; the racing ships more decked out for fighting.
Season 4 is mostly the same… until Fire of Hate.
After that things are a lot worse. The crowd is outright hostile towards Sprx himself and so are any mental versions of the monkey team. There is maybe a mental Mandarin comparing himself and what he became to Sprx under the Fire of Hate. There are no more ship races, and the storms are everlasting.
Things change, with time and help, until a new mental landscape is built. What that might look like, I couldn’t tell you atm.
Gibson
It’s a lab. Gibson himself is brilliant and well-liked. A lot of his achievements are on display as photos or maybe even trophies. He has a labcoat, for my own amusement. The others congratulate him a lot.
But. It’s not all good. (Can you see the theme, here?)
His mistakes are held against him as well. There is, perhaps, a “drawer of shame.” These are brought out when Gibson makes any mistakes. A mental version of Sprx and Mandarin in particular are there to mock him for his mistakes.
(Mandarin is self-explanatory. Sprx? Because Sprx is the one who not only sees through bullshit, but calls it out when he does. Gibson would know that, and therefore, Sprx is his harshest mental critic… except for the fact that these are all Gibson’s words, and not Sprx’s.)
Sometimes he and Otto work as partners. Sometimes his mental Otto is constantly showing him up, and getting more of the praise/affection. There are some issues here, to work out.
Otto
An endless workshop, full of what others might perceive as junk. There is always a project going. Blueprints cover the wall. And the tables. His mind is whirring constantly. There is always something to be built, something to be improved. He never stops.
His machines talk to him. Some are voices of reason. Some are children. Some are old. Some speak of impulsive things. Everything he creates has a life, has a voice.
Other people aren’t as present in his mind, because they exist outside of it. They come to pull him away from his work, often; to engage with them, have fun, train, etc. He doesn’t need copies of them in his mind because they’re right there with him.
Chiro
I left him for last because I was having the hardest time with him, tbh. Normally I do him first—I like to follow my perception of the chain in command. But this time… idk, it felt right to leave him last.
The landscape is that of Shuggazoom. But most of the time, you can find him in the Super Robot itself. Sometimes, the Sun Riders are hanging out. (The versions of them from the show; even after the real ones make amends, its his childhood heroes, the characters, that hold a spot in his mental city.) A younger version of himself is there, as well; maybe alongside parents.
Chiro is always in hypermode. He is the leader, the hero. He’s taller, maybe a little broader/buffer than irl Chiro.
When his inner demons come, they target the child. The hero rescues the child, time and time again; because that’s what the hero was created for. That’s why he wanted to be a hero. To keep from being helpless. Even in his own mind. (Especially in his own mind.)
