it's so interesting that gideon opens his heart so quickly and completely and irrevocably to twig, while regarding mishka -- a parallel little sister/kid figure with some worrying hag magic attached, who also is in a situation similar to and has overlapping trauma with his own; they both have the scars of manacles around their wrists and are exploited for some inborn capacity other people want to make use of -- with such measured distanced distrust. and any reason you want to imagine there makes so much sense! it could be it's just too much like his own situation and he can't go there without getting into contact with things in himself he'd rather not feel or remember. might be instinctive flinch-away from still dealing with what happened to twig (and then jabberwock party wipe horror on top of that as a further attachment anxiety booster -- he didn't see kremy die since he's the first to go, but he sure gets to hear the story afterwards), and not wanting to risk that pain again so soon. twig meeting him at a moment where he was ready to let someone into his fiercely guarded in-group, and mishka didn't? just plain differences in personal chemistry (again... mishka is a lot like him in a lot of ways. perhaps. too much for comfort from some angles)?
if his trauma brain has decided that NO I've got kremy under one wing and twigsy under the other and sorry kid I only have two fucking wings, nothing is ever going to take this from me again while I'm alive to fight for it (the way they took my dad and my home and all those years of my life)... biggest FAIR ENOUGH GID! AS YOU WERE GID YOU DO YOU GID!! in history honestly even if it is a bit unfair to mishka
#once upon a witchlight#legends of avantris#once upon a witchlight spoilers#gideon coal#getting through the last few eps of s1 that I've been keeping as in case of emergency mood boosters awaiting s2#and this just stood out to me so clearly haha. kremy seems to have a little bit of a softer reaction to her but really MOST of them#have a very '....hmmmmmm😑what is your nefarious deal small child' vibe with her fhdsj. I guess it's natural to have some trust issues#considering the shit they're going through the last fifteen or so episodes I can't begrudge them that#can kremy look at her and NOT see some shade of gideon tho. the old lady trying to get her husband back sure woke something in him#I feel like this must too even tho being kremy he might not necessarily act on it in a way we'd consider like. helpful haha#I love the incredibly stark in-group out-group distinction that exists in gideon's world it's so fascinating#he's SO protective and deeply kind with the people he loves and a borderline monster with people he doesn't care about (most of them)#which means he's not only content but HAPPY to be kremy's attack dog b/c like. it's not like he cares what happens#to people he doesn't care about! check and mate happy gator husbandwife happy life. and yet he loves very sincerely when he does#which is presumably why he finds it so scary. all that and also the cake chad. a deceptively complex man#(kremy has a different hilarious in-group out-group thing going on in that his in-group seems to be literally just him and gid hfkashf#he'll do things because they matter to gideon but I think outside of the two of them there is no one but maybe the unicorns#that kremy would not sell to satan for one corn chip to save his own skin. I love you kremy you suck so bad you are my babygirl <3)

Can you describe the chocobros for me please
Oh so you want me to GUSH huh. you wanna see me be a NERD huh. you wanna see me GET SOFT
Tumblr media
Noctis is the Crown Prince of Lucis and also the King of Kings (the latter an extremely significant prophecy like, save the world from evil at the behest of the gods themselves significant) and it's left him with a pretty complex personality. He doesn't easily let people get close to him, but he's compassionate, caring, and quick to help others in need with a strong sense of justice and the desire to protect others, especially those he forges close bonds with. He grew up arguably pretty sheltered because he was sickly as a child, lost his mother, his father was somewhat distance as the King, and Noctis was educated at a private academy for the elite in a metropolitan city where no one leaves (magic wall around the perimeter, it's a long story). He's reasonably nervous about becoming the future ruler of his country, but he's deeply devoted to his people and is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it's at his own risk đŸ„ș
Those he becomes close to he's very loyal to, but he's not always the best at expressing his emotions because his upbringing has left him 1) kind of awkward at communicating sometimes like teenage boy awkward 2) feeling like he can't let people get close to him and 3) he feels like he has to keep up this strong demeanor ad the future ruler. He's a really laid back sweet young man though, and he loves animals, and fishing, and posing for goofy photos with his friends. He actually has a very sarcastic sense of humor, but he seems like he's also easy to fluster with sentimental moments ❀
Tumblr media
Oh man, speaking of loyal, Ignis is Noctis' childhood friend and also acts as a sort of combination best friend/royal steward. Highly intellectual, Ignis is a skilled cook who prepares the group's meals out on their journey, is a borderline professional biologist with his knowledge of Lucian flora and fauna, skilled in combat, and is jokingly referred to as the 'Mum' of the group (because he's British somehow, you really either love or hate the accent because he's Very British)
He's one of those very organized people, usually the one who drives during the events of the game, keeps tabs of the supplies, and is happily and effectively a caretaker for his loved ones. Ignis will even chide his brothers in arms, helping to keep them focused and on the right track. He'll tuck a scarf around your neck so you won't get cold, but don't get cheeky with him or you'll get an earful~
Tumblr media
oh god I want him to kiss me so bad
So this gorgeous fucking adonis nice young man is Gladiolus, or Gladio for short. Another of Noctis' childhood friends, he's actually the eldest son of the Amicitia family, who's been tasked with serving and protecting the Crown for generations, and it's a job he takes enormous pride and honor in. Gladio is Noctis' stalwart guardian ready to lay his life on the line for his King, like a brother as he serves and protects and occasionally helps his younger buddy get in touch with his emotions when the Prince is unsure of himself.
He's an athletic monster who hauls around large greatswords and heavy metal shields, exercises regularly, and even his buddies tease him for being such a muscular fucking hottie who walks around in either tank tops that show off his tattoos or shirts he leaves unbuttoned. Gladio will throw himself in harm's way to protect you but he'll also put his foot down and raise his voice and tell you when you need to get your shit together. God i want to lick his abs.
Tumblr media
Prompto is the youngest and is honestly the most normal of the group. He doesn't have some grand upbringing or noble birthright, but he became close friends of Noctis and the others by chance. He's a goofy young man who loves photography and having fun with his buddies, playing little pranks, loves playing games, and is a lover of animals, especially chocobos. When times are stressful and tense, he's the one to lighten the mood and bring everyone's spirits back up.
He had a lot of insecurities as a child, but Noctis inspired him to strive for his ideal self, and he's super attached to all of his friends. He still has some lingering doubts about his own self-worth or where he fits in, but at the end of the day he'll throw himself into the fire for his loved ones. He's also a big dork who gets all clammed-up and embarrassed if there's someone cute he has a crush on.
So yeah I guess that's how I would describe the chocobros 👉👈

Lupita Fernandez (full profile) - WIP
A few things are left in blank, but other than that, here’s Lupita’s profile! :D
Basics Name: María Guadalupe Fernåndez Nicknames: Lupita (she likes to go by this name), Lupe (her little sister calls her this often) Age:  15 (actually 101) Gender: Female Ethnicity: Mexican Birthplace: Arizona, USA Current Residence: Wherever the Hunters go Height: 5' 3" Weight: Blood Type: A+ Birthday: May 11th, 1912 Zodiac: Taurus Eye Color: Hazel Hair Color: Black Physical Description (be at least a little detailed): Maria is a short young girl. She has a deep tan skin, skinny arms and legs, a heart-shaped face with hazel eyes, thin lips, and a button nose. Her wavy black hair is cut short, bobbed-styled, and ends just below her ears.
Personality
Traits: Outgoing, Cheerful/Humorous, Independent/Confident, Caring, Dramatic, Liar, Irresponsible.
Outgoing: Lupita is very outgoing, she talks to anyone and everyone.
Cheeful/Humorous: Lupita loves having a good time with her friends. She enjoys a good laugh, and anyone can hear her laughter from far away. She hates being in a bad mood, or seeing her friends in a bad mood, or even being in a negative space, she'll always find a way to cheer herself, and people around her, up (whether cracking a joke, or dragging her friends to a party/carnival/festival). If all else fails, she'll simply go elsewhere to have a fun time.
Independent/Confident: During a time where women didn't have much of a voice, and were supposed to have a much more submissive attitude, Lupita was the complete opposite. She likes taking charge, and putting matters into her own hands in order to get the things she wants. She likes to do things on her own and will rarely ask for help, if anything, she'll completely avoid asking for help. Also, Lupita isn't afraid to speak her mind. If she has something to say, she'll say it, whether they liked it or not. Of course, she would get herself into trouble because of it, but that didn't stop her "putting some sense into their minds", as she would say.
Caring: Lupita is a very caring person. She cares deeply about her mother, her sister, and her friends. Towards her mother, she would care a lot about her well-being, and would help around the house whenever her mother wasn't feeling well. As for her sister, Consuelo, Lupita was very motherly-like towards her. She loved her sister very much, and would do anything for her. And for her friends, she considered them family, and would always let them know that she was there for them, for anything. She'll gladly help her friends in their time of need, and will give advice if she thinks it's need (which is most of the time).
Liar: After constantly sneaking out of the house to go to parties/movies, Lupita learned to lie like it's nothing. But more often than not, her lies will backfire.
Irresponsible: Lupita is kind of irresponsible. When it comes to Consuelo, she will protect her at all costs, but besides that, she's not really good at dealing with responsibility, as well as making good decisions for herself, and for those around her (ex: whenever she was in charge of looking after her sister while her parents were away, and there happened to be a party she really wanted to go to, she would bring her sister along with her. But most of the time, she would end up getting caught, and getting into deep trouble with her parents, especially her step-father).
Dramatic: Lupita is a Drama Queen. She will blow things out of proportion if she's in an argument, and will make a scene out of everything. If anything, she's borderline melodramatic.
Fears: Getting lost, the unknown (post-Lost Hotel & Casino); ghost stories, horror movies, monsters (prior to being trapped in the Lotus hotel, though she still fears them).
Favorite Food: Chicken and rice
Favorite Drink: Coca-Cola
Favorite Scent: Flowers
Favorite Movie: "It" (1927, starring Clara Bow), and Charlie Chaplin movies
Favorite Song:
Favorite Band/Singer:
Favorite Time of Year: Summer
Favorite Time of Day: Night
Best Subject (Camp): Archery
Best Subject (School): Caligraphy
Worst Subject (Camp): Swordfighting
Worst Subject (School): Math
Family/Friends
Mother: Maria Dolores Fernandez (neé Rodriguez)
Father: Dionysus
Step-Parent: Antonio Manuelo Fernandez
Siblings: Consuelo Fernandez (age 8)
Closest Friends (Camp): The Hunters of Artemis
Closest Friends (Outside): Fatima Lopez
Boy/Girlfriend: none
Past Relationships: She dated a few guys from her town, but they were never serious.
Battle
Weapon: Silver bow and arrow
Style: Archery
Strengths: Speed, stealth, leadership
Weaknesses: Patience, teamwork (but she starts to work better in a team once she joins the Hunters of Artemis)
Abilities (if any):  (please don't over-do it) She has the ability to create illusions, but its strength depends on the person she's using it on, like the more scared or tired person/monster is in battle, the more stronger and believable her illusions are.
Fatal Flaw: Cowardice.
Background:
Maria (Lupita's mother) met Dionysus at a local fair. She didn't know who he really was since he was disguised as a regular mortal, and she couldn't see through the Mist. After several encounters with him, Maria found out she was pregnant, and when her parents found out, they immediately arranged a wedding with their neighbor's son, Antonio. Maria then gave birth to Lupita on May 11, 1912.
Lupita was very mischievous, constantly skipping school to watch movies, or to go to parties with her friends. Her biggest dream was to travel the world and become an actress, and after one terrible night--when she accidentally found out about her mother's affair with Dionysus (she didn't know it was him at the time), and ran away from home--she met a young man promising her that he would make her a star, and travel the world. Excited, Lupita went along with him, but once they reached Nevada, the man left her without a trace (taking her money with him as well (which wasn't enough). Feeling lost and betrayed, Lupita wandered aimlessly throughout the state until she reached Las Vegas, where she came across the Lotus Hotel and Casino. Having no place to go (and tired of sleeping on the streets, with barely anything to eat), she checked in. She had originally planned to stay there for a week or so, until she could figure out a way to make money to get to Hollywood, but instead, she was trapped in there, unknowingly, for more than a century.
A hundred years later, Lupita was found and rescued by two demigods on a quest, and was immediately sent to Camp Half-Blood. As soon as she left the building, Lupita felt an immediate culture-shock. She was startled, amazed, and scared all at once when she saw tall skyscrapers, fast moving cars, and millions of people walking to and fro, dressed in outfits she'd never seen before, and holding up small, and very thin, rectangular boxes she would later learn to be smartphones.
As they reached camp, she was given the demigod lecture, and was told about her true heritage. She also met her real father, Dionysus, and was claimed on the spot. But even though she was given fully detailed explanations about what happened, Lupita still felt shocked about the whole situation. She hated it. She wanted to leave and go back home, but a deep, bitter feeling told her she couldn't anymore. She was stuck in the wrong time period, whether she liked it or not.
However, after the events of "The Last Olympian", Lupita met the Huntresses of Artemis, including Artemis herself, and immediately asked to join them. She realized that since she couldn't go back in time, and didn't want to stay in the current time period, she would might as well roam along through time with the huntresses. With them, she felt she would finally be in a place where she truly belonged, along with other people who were also in situations similar to her's. She could connect with them, she could relate to them easily. With that, Artemis accepted her request, and Lupita became one with the Hunters.

worth my while // p. 8
main masterlist | thor masterlist | ko-fi | p. 7 | p. 9
Tumblr media
Summary: After being banished from his home, Thor Odinson has stopped at nothing to prove himself worthy of his throne, title, and power.
After losing the love of your life, you turned to a power you didn’t understand. You know you shouldn’t get involved.
But how could you not?
Pairing: Thor x Reader (Hercules au
kind of
)
A/N: So the yelling has already started but...it’s only gonna get worse before it gets better ;)
(Y’all know me though - I can’t not end on a happy note. So stay tuned.)
Warnings: Violence, lots of angst, borderline abuse and definite manipulation, way too many feels, major character death (eventually). Hades is still a huge creep.
Words: 2,320
“I hate to inform you of this, Oh Wise One,” you say, sardonic irony dripping from every word, “but the God of Thunder is practically perfect in every way.” You pet Cerberus’s head once more, anchoring yourself in enough comfort to stand up to Hades if you have to.
You’re not going further with whatever he has planned. You will not hurt Thor, not even for your own freedom.
You love him. More than yourself. More than life. More than freedom. Admittance the hardest part, despite how easy it is to act on the knowledge you have.
Hades seems unfazed. He sits and stares at you, then shrugs. “Sounds like that’s a you problem,” he says. “No flaw, no freedom.”
At that, your face drops. How could you have possibly thought you’d be able to get around Hades like this?
“I am disappointed, of course.” He comes around the coffee table, stands over you, and crosses his arms. “I asked you do to something-”
“You definitely didn’t ask-”
“And, time and time again, you’ve come back empty handed. Not really getting my powers’ worth out of our deal.”
“That sounds like a you problem.” You don’t even miss a beat. Your eyebrows lower, and the glare you shoot at him would otherwise be enough to kill.
Despite his reputation, despite the myths and the interpretations, Hades has never gotten really, truly angry with you. He’s never shown pure rage. Frustration, sure. Disappointment - it’s in his navy eyes now. But he saves anger for those beyond the mansion.
Still, you’ve learned that there are deeper ways to cut, more dangerous emotions to feel and show than to rage.
When Hades stays calm and collected, your skin crawls. When he chuckles, you slink back against the couch.
“I’ve made bad deals before,” he says. “You’re not the first. And I know how to deal with servants like you, (Y/N). Now, I don’t want to have to go there.” He shrugs. “But you seem to think you’re playing my hand for me.”
All you can do is stare. Your Cerberus whines for you, but your hand has stilled on his head.
“I’d say I’m giving you one more chance, but you don’t have much of a choice.” At least he acknowledges it. “This time, you do things my way.”
--
The airy, cloudy restraints on your ankles, wrists, and around your mouth should not be so stable. They are, but they don’t look like they should be unbreakable.
They taste like death - or what you imagine death to taste like. They taste like Rick did after you brought him back. They remind you of every mistake you’ve made since you watched Rick storm out of your apartment and into the street - every moment you’ve decided to do something unnatural or abhorrent that’s led you to this.
Hades doesn’t have to carry you. His magic does that for him - another dark, swirling cloud beneath you that smells like the end of the world. You stopped struggling ten minutes ago, because you know that this is always where you were meant to end up. From the moment that you agreed to whatever Hades wanted for the sake of Rick, you stepped onto a path that only continued in one winding direction.
Apocalypse comes to mind. Hades has never called it that, but you know now, and it’s fitting.
He wants to raise the dead.
The Avengers guard the living.
He separates them, gets his Four Horsemen to occupy and imprison them a few at a time, raises the dead, and controls the guardians of the living all in one fell swoop.
But first, he brings you as an offering to the God of Thunder. Thor is the only Avenger that Hades has no manner to successfully hold. He’s too strong, too good, too determined to prove himself worthy of returning home. He’ll agree to anything that might deem him as such.
Hades seems to think that includes bargaining for you.
One tear slips out of your left eye as Hades steps out onto the field behind Avengers’ Compound. You haven’t been here before; you and Thor have only ever spent time in the tower, in Manhattan.
This place is massive. You can’t appreciate it right now, but you can tell it was crafted specifically with someone like Thor in mind - someone who, in theory, should be able to travel inter-dimensionally with the assistance of his hammer. This is where Hades has lured Thor with a whole slew of monsters. This is where he gets the God of Thunder alone, does whatever it is he wants to him, and leaves you to clean up the mess you know is coming.
Like clockwork, his massive frame falls from the sky. You can feel the ground shake, despite being cloaked for the moment and despite not even touching the ground.
Hades stops in his tracks. He leans back, crosses his arms, and chuckles pretentiously. “If it isn’t the Mighty Thor,” he says.
Thor stands tall. His long hair looks freshly washed, despite absolutely having fought monsters no less than forty minutes ago.
In any other circumstance, you’d run right to Thor. You crave his arms around you, want nothing more than to say what’s inside to him, to have him repeat it back. You want to prove yourself worthy enough of Asgard, to go with him and never look back at this forsaken place, this planet that took your heart and sold it to the highest bidder.
Speaking of, Hades holds out a hand and introduces himself. Thor just stares, brows furrowed. You know he can’t see you, but you try to mumble around the cloud in your mouth. He, apparently, cannot hear you, either.
Hades can, though. He glares at you over his shoulder, a warning in his navy depths.
You slink back, a sob caught in your throat. This is all too much. You hate yourself for ever getting into this; you hate Rick for dying; you hate Hades for taking advantage of your broken heart; you even, for just a second, hate Thor for attempting to put it back together.
But that just restarts the whole cycle, and you know it’s not fair to hold that against Thor. Not when you kept going back to him because it felt good and right and all manner of shiny, magical descriptors.
You look up at the sky and pray - you hope Odin can hear you, wherever he is, hope he has telekinesis and that it can work at such a distance between Midgard and Asgard and that he’s listening to some random mortal because you pray for Thor. You beg Odin to bring him home, to save his son, to protect the only person who’s even attempted to restore your faith in humanity.
He’s not even human. The irony sinks in as just one more tear falls from your right eye.
“I’ve got something you may want to consider,” you hear Hades say. He snaps, and suddenly a veil you hadn’t even been aware of lifts. The world is brighter - harsher - and you squint as the cloud your on brings you out from behind Hades.
Thor lunches for you, but he phases right through you.
“I wouldn’t try that, friend,” Hades says. “You want the girl? You give me your strength for 24 hours - let’s say the next 24 hours.”
Thor must hear it all. He gets up slowly, watches you carefully, then drags his eyes to Hades. “If I agree,” he says, voice a dangerous growl from low in his chest, “if I give you my strength, you have to swear no harm will come to her.”
Hades glances back at you, this time with a hint of dramatic teasing alight in his eyes. “Of course,” he says. He thrusts his hand out further toward Thor. “Not a single hair out of place.”
Thor’s nostrils flare. The lines etched in his face make him look much older than you’re used to. Much more aggressive. Lightning fits this man.
“I don’t really have all day,” Hades says. “You either want her, or you don’t.”
You hate the way he says that. Like he can convince you both, with just one sentence, that you either mean nothing or everything to Thor.
You know better. He’s an Avenger for a reason. You are just one human - one measly little girl he’s spent too much time with, invested too much emotion in. He’s a hero because he always puts the people first.
Except...for when he doesn’t, apparently.
“Fine,” he nearly whispers.
Your breath hitches when you watch his hand stretch out toward Hades’. You shake your head, hope he sees, but his fingers move in and around Hades’, and suddenly he’s on his knees, groaning as the strength within him is pulled from his essence.
Your throat is raw as you yell around the cloud, shaking your head. You know that Thor is more than his strength. Mjölnir knows it, too. But without it, you know he can’t go up against a hoard of zombies. Without his strength, Mjölnir could easily rip his arm from its socket before he could even think of joining the fight.
When the job is done, Thor falls back onto his heels. He kneels and breathes deeply, and Hades snaps.
The clouds fall away from you. You fall forward, your hands catching you at the last second, wrists exploding with jolts of pain after having been bound together for so long.
More sobs spill from between your lips.
You could’ve stopped this. Except, no, that’s not true.
But you could have prevented it.
“Oh, and isn’t she just...the best little actress?” Hades asks. His fingers grip your chin and pull you up so you kneel at his side.
There’s no fight left in you. You don’t even try to pull away.
Thor breathes heavily as he asks, “What?” His eyes dart to you - those electric blues sending static shocks all over your face as he glares.
“She didn’t tell you?” Hades asks. He tsks, shakes his head, looks down at you like the disappointment you are.
You can feel something inside of you is about to break. No, not just break - shatter.
“This whole time, your little friend here, has been working for me.” The smile Hades shoots at Thor churns your stomach, makes you want the grass around you to swallow you whole so you don’t have to see the look of absolute heartbreak on Thor’s face.
A dull peal of thunder rings, but it’s far off. The day is, otherwise, sunny. Annoyingly so.
You pull your face from Hades’ grip and try to scoot closer to Thor, but he leans back. It’s a subtle shift, but it’s all he can manage and all you need to know that he does not want you close. Not like you so desperately need to be.
“I-I tried to stop him-” you offer, but it comes out pathetic and defeated. “I couldn’t tell-”
He shakes his head. His bottom lip trembles, but you’re sure you’re the only one that sees it.
You can’t force yourself to keep eye contact with him as deserved and heated shame fills you. The thing - your heart - inside does, in fact, shatter. Into a million and a half pieces, now littering the field beyond the compound.
“I’m so sorry,” you whisper, folding in on yourself.
--
At first, Thor doesn’t let you help him up. But after a while, when his brain finally recognizes that his mass is too heavy for his ability, he lets you touch him. He pulls on you as lightly as he can, but you end up doing most of the work anyway. Somehow, you manage to get him standing.
The second he’s stable, he pulls away from you. You watch him slowly trudge back to the main compound building - or what you think is the main building, anyway. You still don’t get a good look at the grounds, but if you stray too far from Thor, you’ll never get to explain yourself.
At least you’re free, now. You know you are simply by feeling.
There was a weight before that no longer presses on the knot between your shoulder blades. It evaporated with the clouds that bound you.
But your freedom has come at the cost of every other living soul on the planet. And even you know that that is not a fair trade.
“Why did you do it?” you ask Thor. The only other sounds are occasional birds and the rustling of grass as the wind blows and the two of you walk.
“Why did you?” he asks, brows still lowered as he looks at you.
Silence reigns. You know your answer - you were drawn to him, you made rules to keep you both safe, and then you systematically broke each of those rules until you were so far deep in love with Thor that the only thing you could do was put his journey first.
The thought that he’d done the same for you should make you feel happy. Weightless. Loved.
But knowing what Hades will do because of that choice drowns out any semblance of positivity.
He continues through the compound - doesn’t stop at a bedroom, doesn’t find the kitchen to even attempt to replenish his energy. Thor just keeps going. And you follow him.
When he reaches the main doors of the building, you jog to step around him. “Where’re you going?” you ask.
“I have to find the others,” he says.
You shake your head. “You’re weak now,” you tell him.
The fire in his eyes is not the kind of fire you like. It’s not meant to make you feel wanted and secure. It burns you, just like he wants it to.
“If you go out there, you’ll die.”
He pushes around you and says, “There are worse things.”

Why I like them: Despite being immature in many ways— I guess by that, I mean her obsessive behavior, but really guys
she *just* turned 14. You know who else is 14? 1D fanfic writers (but more on that later)— in other ways, she’s more mature than adults. First, she’s self-aware, and she’s willing to take responsibility/humble herself when the time comes. Even though a lot of this is because Tikki guides her, it means a lot that she actually listens. I know so many adults that would rather be petty.
And when I say self-aware I mean a lot of things. For one, she understands when she’s doing something
 mm
not so great. Many of these things are for comic relief/exaggeration/situational comedy/slapstick (which is pretty much the extent small children get from it), but it’s still evident that she feels guilty or hesitant.
Tumblr media
does that look like the face of someone who’s comfortable with her own actions?
Kids who watch heroes look for (and need) confidence and justice. Neither of which are happening in this scene or in some others, and from the kids that I know
they’re totally aware of it. Some might blatantly shout at Marinette as they watch her do something wrong, others might not say anything but
trust me they aren’t taking notes.
The thing is, I’m glad she’s a main female character
 who screws up
. a loT. The hero isn’t supposed to be perfect, and I mean that in a general way. Flat villains are perfect in their own realm, so I don’t think imperfect characters are only better for writing, they’re better people or can become better people. A perfect individual is a comfortable and consistent one, a person needs ups and downs to improve.
Tumblr media
It’s a bit like kim possible, except Marinette commits more errors because she’s younger and less adventurous
so in a way she’s a bit naive to the world (Kim Possible may as well be an ambassador, so she’s cultured and still makes really cringey mistakes eyes the wheelchair episode). We grew up watching her make these mistakes so we could see them get fixed, if they never happened we wouldn’t know for better or for worse. What’s more, it’s most important coming from the main character. So
 I’m proud of her.
Another thing is that she watches her own behavior in the future. She’s learning to trust that Adrien won’t fall for Lila’s gags, she’s learning to talk to him and move away from being a fan (bluntly pointed out in Troublemaker, she actually sees herself as more of a fan than as a friend. Yes, she was lying to cover herself, but she had pictures of all of her friends up
she didn’t use friendship as an excuse? And why did the excuse come to her so naturally? It might be obvious, but she gets flustered and doesn’t come up with good lies
honestly ‘because im a fan’ is pretty fair), and she’s learning how to treat Chat Noir.
I would almost say in Season 1 that Ladybug was pretty flippant to Chat Noir, and I know it was cute at times but people usually behave this way with someone they feel close to already
so why didn’t she ever take the time to take him seriously? Ever since Glaciator, Ladybug has learned how sensitive he is. She didn’t judge him so quickly as to assume that he felt entitled to her, or that he was throwing a simple/unimportant tantrum that could be shrugged off. She took the time to read into the situation and see what exactly was going through his head. Emotions are never a joke, especially in a city where someone like Hawkmoth is a concern. She was cool and collected like a therapist, especially because she sympathized where his feelings were coming from (not too long before she had gotten upset with some ice cream man that was just doing his everyday thing and ditched her friends because she felt hopeless and betrayed by Adrien). Granted she never said anything against him, but she didn’t get forced into a situation where she had to confront him either.
She also knew that reacting harshly would only make things worse, and then neither of them would get off from their high-horse. Compassion is what gets a person to reflect and feel respected. She looked him sincerely in the eyes and apologized, and she expected the same from him. She set the stage, and he responded. They ended up fine, and he even reacted well to the infamous ‘friendzone’, because well
he treasures friends too, and he didn’t know Ladybug considered him to be one. Ladybug was surprised, but now that she knew he had felt abandoned not only that night but since the beginning, she took note that he has trouble reading when a person cares about him deeply (and we all know he does, his love receptors are broken both in his household and as seen in the most recent ep).
Tumblr media
She is much softer with him now but very explicit. She doesn’t beat around the bush, she tells him exactly what he needs to hear.
Tumblr media
“Chat Noir! You know you’re irreplaceable.”
Tumblr media
Look at that face, he knows now that you said it.
It’s actually quite motherly
I mean this is a perfect response. She adjusts to the needs of her friends accordingly rather than treating them equally, because friends don’t always need the same thing. Equity over equality. She’s an excellent example and so much more than the “Huff
I’m a strong independent woman and I don’t care about men and if anyone ever sasses me I’ll choke them. Also I don’t paint my nails, that’s for babies” You can be strong and independent without sacrificing any of these things. It’s not about making enemies, it’s about standing up for yourself— and those you care about.
I could look for so many examples of how she looks out for her friends and makes sure to mind their feelings and experiences before getting all defensive, but that would be
 the entire show.
She’s imperfectly perfect and perfectly imperfect.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Zombisou... and maybe Chameleon and Oniichan. She was angry about so many different things and had so much pressure on herself— including the fact that in each of these she had to protect/comfort/defend someone anyone else in their right mind would rather spit on. But Marinette is noble, she knows how to keep herself together when she needs to. When it comes down to it, the people she’s so angry with are human too. They have hearts with burdens of their own that she doesn’t even know about, if something were to happen to them she would care. She has the responsibility to keep them safe, but also she wants to. There’s a difference between a pain in the ass and a monster, and besides she isn’t the judge of the universe, it’s not her place to decide what someone gets and doesn’t get. Maybe they aren’t getting everything they deserve, but if every human being got what they deserved we’d all be struck dead by lightning.
Tumblr media
And she certainly doesn’t wish death upon them. And as we’ve all noted, whether it’s seen publically or not... what goes around comes around.
Favorite season/movie: Season 2 wins again... for now, it aint over yet
Favorite line: Uhh... dang it this again... how about the one above? “You know you’re irreplaceable?” and every other uwu line she has. She is so soft hhuhhggn
Favorite outfit: The cute lil maid outfit from Animaestro
OTP: Well it’s the same as what I put for Adrien, Marichat. For noncanon... mmm.. I think Kagaminette but Ninette is p damn close
Brotp: I mean??? ALyanette duh. But you know since right now Ladynoir is technically platonic.... they’re pretty lit as bros too (marichat is too but so far fanon is the only place they’ve truly become bro bros)
Headcanon: She wouldn’t have all of those pictures of Adrien if she felt even remotely close to him. I think those fics where she has photos up of Chat Noir should be canon, just like how she has ones of her friends, but she has soo many of Adrien which sets him apart from friendship like I said before. She’s insecure and taking advantage of the fact that he’s famous af, none of us can truly relate to having access to so many amazing photos of our crushes... and to sort of continue with the next question..
Unpopular opinion: These days a phone’s photobook may as well be a private wall to hang pictures on so really... Marinette is an exaggeration of exactly what people do— mostly young girls, which she happens to be— and hey get off of your crushes Instagram while you’re at it. It’s actually pretty normal, it’s not the best behavior but again, you need to have that cringey low to climb higher. And anyhow it’s all for the joke of it, no one is supposed to take these things seriously. But I’ll let you all know when my younger cousins start hanging up stalker photos of their noncelebrity crushes “because marinette did it so it must be ok”
Honestly, not even the borderline ooc things are that bad. Like... they’re bad... but it’s a good thing to show, as in it’s not too horrendous to use as an example. It works because it’s so unrealistic, but with very real behaviors that kids need to address in themselves by watching Marinette. I would say some of her actions straddle between IC and OOC, not either-or.
(WARNING: Do not read on if you have intensely strong feelings toward L/u/k/a to the point of sensitivity over any mild criticism as a character or as he is written. If you’re pretty chill reading anything then you’re fine, I didn’t say anything cruel I only gave an opinion as mildly as I could. The point of the honest opinion section is not to be salty but to express my point of view without insults)
Her crush on Adrien at this point in time is no more or less unhealthy than her crush with L/u/k/a— which is still unclear because for some reason In Silencer she still looked like she was on the brink of deciding she had a crush. She’s kind to L/u/k/a and he’s kind back, but she isn’t very nice. The difference is that it’s not very nice to ask someone on a date to spy on your main crush, it’s not very nice to indulge in the affection someone gives you as a chew toy while you wait for your crush and try avoiding the guy who is deeply in love with you and you sorta like him too. (He fell for her incredibly quickly and she did too despite feeling insulted by him moments before, unfortunately he’s a fallback she feels almost nothing for and she’s directing her ‘oh-no-feelings-for-someone-who-isnt-adrien’ chat noir attack to l/u/k/a because with him, she knows its easily uprooted). This goes back to the importance of not always being at your best behavior for a child audience to learn from you, but my unpopular opinion is that she and Adrien are not toxic and she and l/u/k/a are not a godsend. He’s also the equivalent of a High school sophomore dating an 8th grader? So... it’s kinda weird that he’s advancing? (I censored his name for the sake of avoiding conflict, I’m stating this for the unpopular opinion and I said it in as straight as I could because I don’t want salt to touch this. I respect L/u/k/a as a character, he’s a good boy. I’m disagreeing and agreeing to disagree by trying not to engage.)
Wish: Please, let her find out Chat Noir’s identity first... I beg you.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Except don’t let the reveal happen right after one of them is rejected... that... that would be really bad.
5 words to best describe them: Noble, responsible, creative, strong, kind
My nickname for them: I like Marigold and Shortcake, I’ve used them in fics and I cry
anyway she’s one of the best protags don’t @ me when I have kids they’ll be watching her and adrien and they will be who they’re raised on

Org XIII Members as Yanderes
Suggested by: Anon.  I did research for this one, guys, because I’m not very familiar with the Yandere style.  For another good post - that is a lot better than this one - about Org members as Yandere’s, click here.  To find where I got my information, click here.
Don’t know what a Yandere is? Here’s a definition: “yandere is a portmanteau of two Japanese words, yanderu (to be sick) and deredere (strongly and deeply lovestruck.) Someone who is sweet and kind at first glance but will become violent and possessive when it comes to their love.”
Be warned.  This one gets violent in some places.  Also, the behaviors and attitudes listed below are toxic, so if you have a significant other who displays any of these traits, please do what you can to safely leave the situation.
Xemnas
Type: Sadistic
Arguably the worst of the yandere types, Xemnas and sadistic yandere’s have a strong desire to break you.  To tear you apart until you’re nothing more than an empty shell of what you once were, and now he can change and mold you to be whatever he wants you to be.  In his eyes, you are pure and perfect, so he is utterly fascinated with the idea of corrupting you.
Physical pain is one thing that Xemnas thrives on.  Causing physical harm is one of the only ways that he feels he can show affection.  Grabbing you a little too harshly by the arm, grabbing your chin with his hand to force you to look at him, pushing you onto the bed or onto a chair and forcibly ripping off your clothes when he wants to have sex with you? All things that Xemnas does.
However, mental and emotional pain is something that he is seriously good at causing.  Whether it’s harming or hurting your family and friends, manipulating you into hurting them yourself, and causing you to just be completely mentally torn about your feelings for him and his actions.  Xemnas pretty much lives to torture you.
Xigbar
Type: Manipulative
Xigbar’s natural personality is mischievous and dangerous, which makes his manipulation of you all the more powerful.  He’s naturally an enticing guy and lures you in with his bad boy persona and before you know it you’re spiraling down a rabbit hole of possession and manipulation.
Makes you feel like you’re completely and utterly dependent on him so when he wants sex and you don’t, you feel like you have to satisfy him otherwise he might leave you.  Then where would you be? Alone and lonely and with no one to help you?
Before you actually got together and he realized that you had some attraction for him, he would definitely do anything in his power to make you jealous.  He won’t be satisfied until all of your thoughts are of him and no one else.
Xaldin
Type: Overprotective
Xaldin is like a silent guardian for you, following you around and standing behind you with his arms crossed, intimidating anyone that you speak to.  It gets to be so overwhelming sometimes that you want him to back off, but be careful when you tell him that because he’ll scowl and frown and claim that you aren’t taking your own safety seriously.
In general, he’s happy just being by your side.  He likes spending time in your company and doesn’t like being away from you.  However, if he feels at any moment that you’re in harm’s way, you won’t even be able to imagine what he’ll be capable of.  Will definitely attack or even kill anyone who bothers to lay a hand on you.
He loves having you depend on him at certain moments because he feels as though you can’t protect yourself.  He almost treats you like a child at moments and uses your imagined weakness as an excuse to never be away from you.
Vexen
Type: Stalker
Vexen is usually so busy with doing whatever it is that he does on a daily basis that he has a hard time balancing his work with his feelings for you.  Doesn’t get a chance to romance you like he actually wants, so he definitely turns to some stalker tendencies.  The worst he’ll ever get is that he literally has a camera in places that you frequent, including your bedroom.  It’s the only way he knows that he can keep an eye on you - protect you - while still being able to work.
Watches from the sidelines and continuously admires you from afar, very much on the line of ‘creepy.’  Definitely capable of killing for his S/O whether she knows it or not.
Lexaeus
Type: Overprotective
The two of you were always very close and neither of you can really pinpoint the moment when your relationship went from being protective to overprotective.  It was almost a natural transition, so slow and gradual that you barely noticed it.  Even Lexaeus doesn’t believe he’s being overprotective because he doesn’t think that he’s going to far with watching over you.  Your safety isn’t debatable.
Lexaeus is quiet and dangerous as he watches over you, sometimes taking your safety a little too seriously.  You don’t dare call him on it though, in fear of what he might do.
In the end, he makes you feel so paranoid that every single thing in the world might be a danger to you, so you pretty much cease to be your own person.  He uses it as an excuse to keep you by his side at all times.
Zexion
Type: Obsessive
Kind of similar to the stalker type.  The only difference is that Zexion does make contact with you more often than not and communicates with you as though you are less than intelligent - as if you need to be protected and preserved and kept away from any dangers in the world that might tarnish you.
He’s usually very much a sweetheart on the outside, but there’s something about him - about the way he watches you - that makes you uneasy.  It’s almost as though you’re one of his well worn novels that he wishes to put on a bookshelf and keep, to only flip through when he wants to reminisce.
Saix
Type: Possessive
Yandere’s who are the possessive type would like to physically own their love interest, and Saix is no different with you.  Like all of the yandere types, the possessive type goes hand in hand with both the obsessive and the stalker.  Saix wants to keep you safe and protected, like you’re a favorite knick knack or doll that needs to be kept in confinement.
Really at the extreme part of the spectrum.  Saix is extremely good with words and will definitely convince you that you are better off with him and only him.  He’ll try to tell you that the friends you have are bad for you and how you shouldn’t go outside because you might get hurt.
Will definitely use force to get what he wants.  If you ever try to leave, be prepared to be dragged back by your hair.
Axel
Type: Manipulative
“You don’t want your friends to get hurt, do you? I mean, you can barely take care of yourself.  I can’t imagine what kind of burden you must be on them.“  Will definitely manipulate you into thinking you can’t live without him.  Controlling you is Axel’s main goal.  One main issue with this type of yandere is that many people are already involved with or having feelings for the manipulative person, which makes it much easier to manipulate them!  Axel uses your own feelings and love for him to his advantage, making you think that he knows best for you.
“I can’t live without you,“ is not the compliment you once thought. It’s a snare to keep you with him.  Makes it so that you feel as though you have to stay to protect him, and by the time you’ve given up everything for him, he turns on you and makes it so that you want to monopolize him as much as he wants to keep you.
Demyx
Type: Possessive
Demyx’s playful demeanor hides a possessive monster.  Goes insane when anyone tries to touch or make eye contact with you because he sees you as property and not a person.  Will definitely try to separate you from friends and families under the guise of keeping you safe.  He’s so casual about it that you can’t help but believe him, and the next thing you know, you’re locked in his room, cut off from society.
Restrained in public, rough and almost violent in private.  Wants you to dress a certain way, talk a certain way, and act a certain way.  All ways that would suit him.  If you act out or do something he doesn’t like, he’ll make it known and you’ll definitely be punished for it.
Luxord
Type: Obsessive
Like other obsessive Yandere types, Luxord doesn’t see you as a person.  More often than not, he sees you as a piece of artwork that should be admired and praised.  He sometimes wishes that he could pose you like a mannequin in his room forever just so he can admire your exquisite beauty for all eternity.
Luxord manages to keep his yandere tendencies to himself.  His mischievous, kind demeanor masks a person who is possessive and controlling.  Once Luxord has you in his clutches, chances are that you will not be able to escape again.
Marluxia
Type: Stalker
On the opposing side of the clingy version of the yandere spectrum, stalker type yandere’s usually never have much of a chance to win their love’s affection.  Marluxia is so busy with his organization duties, as well as taking care of his plants, etc., that he rarely gets to spend as much time with you as he’d like.
Leaves big bouquets of flowers outside of your door all the time with little love notes saying how much he cares for you and wants to be with you.
Will definitely sabotage any relationship you have with anyone else, especially if that relationship happens to be romantic.
Larxene
Type: Sadistic
Borderline manipulative, Larxene is almost a black widow spider in the way she entices you and manipulates you into her tight clutches and breaks you down until you are nothing like you were before.  Fixated on changing you into what she sees as perfect.  To her, you’re already pure, but not in the correct way.  You’re perfect, but not perfect for her.
As is right with the main definition of sadism - deriving pleasure from the pain of others - Larxene thrives on seeing you in mental and emotional pain.  Physical pain is another thing entirely.  Slapping you around a bit really gets her going.
Roxas
Type: Clingy
When I say clingy, I mean clingy.  Clingy goes hand in hand with the stalker type, when the person feels as if they simply cannot function properly without you.  Roxas has serious abandonment issues, so more often than not you’ll find him at your side, holding onto your hand, asking to hang around you.  You aren’t even sure if he realizes that he’s doing it sometimes.
The most childish out of most of the organization members.  Roxas needs to be near you or he doesn’t feel right.  He almost seems normal most of the time because he just wants to spend time with you, but beware - if someone ever tries to monopolize your time, he will most definitely get possessive, defensive, and dangerous.
Xion
Type: Clingy
More on the childish spectrum of the clingy yandere type.  Almost acting like a child, Xion needs attention or she will pout and throw what could definitely be compared to a tantrum.  Usually just fine with being at your side as you do your own day to day activities, but be warned if you ever try to make a bit of space toward you.
Gets serious separation anxiety when away from you, which means that her clingy attitude will definitely get worse as time goes on.  This means that she needs to be by your side almost constantly and gets fidgety when you’re out of her sight.

Asylum in Humanity
Thank you @everyoneinspaceisgay for the quick beta. And @foularcadebanana for being the best person possible.
-------------------------------
“What are you doing?”
The voice was hard, cruel and unfortunately familiar.
“Let him die, Black,” his maker, Maximovich, demanded—tone steady and unforgiving.
Sirius looked down at the dying Incubus and felt sympathy, not hatred. He wasn’t sure why other Vampires held such disdain for other Magical Beings. Was it an entitlement? Age, perhaps? He knew that the political stigma of recently turned Vampires was at a critical stage, one where the wrong move meant ostracization.
But if being a well-behaved Vampire meant that he had to harm other beings for entitlement, then he was no better than the bigoted purebloods he had detested all his life. It was as if he had given up one bigotry only to gain another.
When would the hatred stop?
When the Incubus looked up, Sirius felt his heart clench. A teenager, no more than fifteen. What kind of monster kills a child for no reason other than because they can?
“I can’t do that,” Sirius whispered, eyes still on the adolescent.
When the teenager looked at him, pain on his face and confusion in his eyes, Sirius knew that he would do anything he could to protect him. What use was it existing if it meant taking the lives of others?
“If your cowardice will sway you, then stand aside. I shall kill him myself.”
The injured boy tried to move as a whimper left his mouth, but it was nothing compared to the speed of a Vampire.
“No!” Sirius yelled as Maximovich picked up the Incubus by the throat. “I’ll give him asylum.”
Maximovich voiced nothing, but the anger in his eyes said it all.
“That is not yours to give.”
“Then I give him my own.”
The Incubus gasped, whether due to the hand still around his throat or to the statement, Sirius wasn’t sure. All he did know, was that Remus was going to kill him.
“You would give up the security of being my prodigy for an Incubus?”
Yes. He wasn’t sure if it was his life as a wizard that made his heart soft, but he couldn’t bear the thought of being anything like his maker.
Maximovich laughed, the sound humourless and cold.
“And you think you are ready to face the world? A meagre Vampire with little training? You think you will stand tall against your brethren—ones that have been around longer than humanity?”
No. The thought was far scarier than Sirius wanted to admit, but he couldn’t do nothing. Couldn’t allow himself to turn into everything he was against.
“It might be a mistake,” Sirius admitted reluctantly. “But I’m going to die trying.”
“Oh, you’ll die alright.”
When Maximovich’s hand slipped and the boy fell, Sirius sprang forward, unwilling to let more harm come to him.
Sirius made sure to position the Incubus in his arms in a way that wouldn’t hurt him further. He eyed Maximovich before he turned away and left by floo.
The last thing he saw before the green flames flickered was a harsh glare and the threat of fangs barred.
 ---------------------------
“You didn’t have to do that.” An Australian accent was detected as the reprimand fell flat, and the Incubus whimpered when Sirius landed unsteadily.
“You would have died.”
“Death by the hands of the enemy is far more forgiving than surviving in banishment”
Sirius walked away from the fireplace and made his way towards the sofa.
“Banishment? What could someone so young have done to be banished?”
A sneer was his only reply, and Sirius knew better than to pry.
“You have a name, young one?”
An arched brow at the nickname had Sirius’ lips twitching.
“Gale.”
“Sirius.” He held out his hand, and when no return was offered, Sirius let out a laugh.
“I’m going to die; my wounds will not heal.”
Sirius rolled his eyes as he stood up and made his way over to his potions kit. “Why must children be so dramatic? You will not die, not when I can do something.”
“You are a Vampire,” Gale sneered. “Nothing you do will be able to help.”
“Dramatic and knowledgeable—so knowledgeable that you think you know everything. Another sign of youth.”
Before Gale could say anything, Sirius was back with several potions and a few healing salves.
“You know the craft?”
Sirius arched his brows. “I was a wizard before I was turned.”
Gale gasped. “But what of the treaty? It’s against the code to bite a wizard for fear of repercussions.”
“Tell that to my maker,” Sirius grumbled, bitter anger still prominent.
“Your existence could start a war.”
Sirius bit his lip to refrain from giving too much information out. Especially to someone as dangerous as Gale.
Gale winced as the potions began to help the internal injuries that Maximovich had done.
“I’m hungry.”
Sirius let out a low whistle as he jumped away.
“I can’t help you there.”
Gale snorted. “I do not require physical satisfaction. That will not happen till I reach maturity.”
The implications were fascinating to Sirius, not much information on Incubi was known to the public. Each race of Magical Beings withholds vital information for protection, secrecy and pride.
“Then how do you eat?”
Gale grinned, the action borderline malicious as jagged teeth poked through.
“Magic comes in waves that not everyone can see. I will survive by the aroma of sensuous emotions—it’s aura, its smell, and the way it tastes in the air.”
Sirius furrowed his brows as that went completely over his head. He wasn’t sure what Gale was talking about.
“You are in love.”
A bewildered noise left Sirius as he cocked his head to the side.
“Why do you say that?”
“I can see it,” Gale whispered, eyes searching the air around Sirius. “People like to think that sensuous emotions can only include lust, but they are wrong. Love is just as in-depth as lust, and it is powerful.”
Sirius let out a breathy exclamation, awed that such a gift could exist. “You can see that I am in love?”
“Oh yes,” Gale said, head nodding slowly. “You love deeply.”
Before Sirius could reply, the sound of his floo connecting had him rushing forward, panicked for an intruder. He relaxed when familiar brown eyes met his own.
“You absolute tosser.” The insult came moments before Sirius was smacked upside the head. “I can’t believe you. What the bloody hell were you thinking?” Remus exploded, the anger clearly heard.
“Ah, I see.”
Remus and Sirius turned to Gale, who had settled more firmly against the sofa.
“Who the fuck are you?”
Sirius snorted as Remus took a step forward, only to pause as he sniffed the air.
“Sirius, why do you have an Incubus in here?”
“He loves you,” Gale said before Sirius could explain.
Remus shot Sirius a look before he crossed his arms. “I know that.”
“Can you see his?” Sirius wondered.
Gale looked at Remus, eyes jarringly wise as a smile slowly appeared.
“You love in the same pattern, how intriguing.”
“What are you talking about?” Remus asked, arms falling as he stepped closer to Sirius. “What pattern? Sirius, what is he talking about?”
“Incubi can see emotions, well at least love, I don’t know about others.”
Gale lifted a shoulder. “Not all, but most.”
Remus perked up, hands coming together in a way that had Sirius groaning.
“Which ones can you see? Does it differ with the people? Or even the Incubi? How about the differences when it comes to Succubae? Oh, what about—”
Sirius covered Remus’ mouth with his hand.
“Oh Merlin, don’t overload the poor boy.”
Gale laughed, the sound more relaxed than Sirius had gotten out of him previously.
“What did you mean?” Sirius asked softly. “About the pattern?”
“Love doesn’t have to be sensuous,” Gale began with a shrug. “Sometimes one party will be in love, and the other is not. Other times the love is parallel but never crossing. The wavelengths of emotion are deep and vastly different from one person to the next.”
Remus hummed curiously. “And ours is the same?” He smiled at Sirius and even after all the years together, it would always enamour him.
“In some societies, they deal in mates, but that would not apply to you. Not with the cross-species and different genetics. I don’t see patterns like this often, and never with such a unique couple.”
Sirius entwined his fingers with Remus’ as he maintained eye contact. He wasn’t entirely sure about Gale’s explanation. The only thing he knew without a doubt, was his own love for Remus.
“In hindsight, I suppose I’m lucky your love entwines so easily.”
“Oh?” Sirius prompted, suddenly suspicious.
“It will feed me just fine.”
Silence settled briefly before, “What?” Remus asked, a tinge of hysteria to his tone.
“Feed you? You are a child. We aren’t going to feed you!”
Gale smirked as his eyes closed and he inhaled deeply. “Don’t fret, werewolf. I do not seek the pleasure of the body. The emotional emissions you both give off is enough for me.”
When Gale inhaled again, Remus shook his head.
“Are you inhaling our emotions?”
“Primitive outlook, but I suppose that is accurate.”
The more Gale spoke, the more Sirius wasn’t sure what to make of him. Gale didn’t act like a teenager would, nor did he speak like one. He supposed it could be a different view of their culture, but he was suspicious.
“The potions can only do so much, feeding will help me heal completely.”
Remus huffed, clearly wanting more information, but Sirius knew that he wouldn’t push.
“The asylum will help me leave this country,” Gale continued, eyes still closed and inhalations still deep.
“Asylum?” Remus whispered as he looked to Sirius. “You granted him asylum.”
Sirius winced as he shook his head.
“He gave me his own,” came Gale’s quiet addition.
Remus closed his eyes as he tightened the hold on their entwined fingers.
“Tell me you didn’t.”
When Sirius said nothing, Remus exhaled loudly.
“I thought you knew,” Sirius said as he gestured towards the fireplace. “You were angry when you came in.”
“Our sources said that Maximovich kicked you out of the coven, not that you gave away your only protection.”
“I know but—”
“Sources?”
They both ignored Gale as Sirius continued. “They were going to kill him, Remus. He’s a child. I couldn’t watch Maximovich murder him.”
Remus’ eyes softened as he glanced towards Gale.
“But giving up your asylum?”
“It was the only thing I could do.”
Remus nodded once, the action more defeated than Sirius would have liked.
“We’ll have to leave the area. Our plans are already in motion. Without the coven as protection, we need to go abroad.”
“Are the other areas prepared?”
Sirius could see Gale eyeing them in confusion, but he ignored him.
“They will be,” Remus said in a confident tone, and Sirius knew he would make it happen.
“And the operatives?”
Remus grinned smugly. “Already gone.”
Sirius let out a low whistle before he pulled Remus towards him.
“You work mighty quick.”
“Only when you are gone.”
“Aw,” Sirius cooed. “Because you miss me?”
“Never,” Remus teased as he placed a kiss against Sirius’ nose.
“I actually work better with you gone. You aren’t good for production.”
Sirius scoffed, a frown marring his features. “Cruel, Moony. I’m supposed to be the light of your life.”
“That doesn’t mean you aren’t a distraction.”
Before Sirius could argue against that, Gale spoke up, tone harsh.
“Who are you two?” There was suspicion in his voice. “Your emotions have muddled into something else entirely.”
Sirius shared a look with Remus, both silently asking the same thing. When Remus shrugged, Sirius knew that meant it was up to him to decide. The tosser really was going to leave him responsible.
He had already given Gale asylum, what else did he have to lose?
“Remember earlier when you said my existence could start a war?”
Gale narrowed his eyes.
“What if I told you that the war was already underway? Only the opposition doesn’t know it.”
“Who is it against?”
Remus pulled Sirius closer as wrapped his arms around Sirius’ neck and looked to Gale.
“Everyone.”

I had a lot of fun with this, wolfstar isn’t my usual, but Vampire Sirius was too good to pass up. Thank you for the prompt, anon. And I’m sure it’s quite different from what you imagined, sorry about that.

1,300 words about Loki, mental illness, and why “lol he’s such a lovable asshole” isn’t my jam.
Anyway, Loki is a severely traumatized and mentally ill person who has very few positive coping mechanisms and falls entirely outside the bullshit respectability politics MI people are supposed to play by in order to be considered full human beings. And that’s one of many reasons why he has legions of fans--many of whom are fellow MI people--and why I love him.
And why his Ragnarok arc means a lot to many of us—and why we’re worried about his Infinity War arc.
To be honest, it kind of bothers me when people are like “lol Loki is such a trash asshole.” I mean
yes? Sometimes? And you’re entitled to your own interpretation of a movie, and especially of its most multifaceted character, so I won’t get in your face because I think you’re wrong on the internet. But that’s not all he is. And as someone with an illness that makes society dismiss me as a piece of trash and a raging asshole (who isn’t deserving of equal rights, I might add), I’m sorry to be riled up about this, but it does kind of rile me up.
When I watch Thor, I see a person who already had mental health challenges and a lot of doubt about his place in the world have his entire life blown apart with no help to pick up the pieces and no real understanding of how to pick them up.
When I watch Avengers, I see a person having a full-blown crisis and lashing out at anything and everything in his path—especially someone who loves him—to try to gain some control over his life. The fact he has godlike powers and can therefore make his problems, everyone’s problems doesn’t take away from this. If anything, it only adds to it to me. Because as a borderline, I can tell you that I’ve wanted the entire world to feel my pain and understand it many, many times.
When I watch Dark World, I see a person who finally becomes numb to everything life has thrown at him and who finally just decides to fade out of it, away from even the family he loves.
And of course, we assume the worst of him because, well we just watched him have a violent breakdown, right? So why wouldn’t he kill Odin, who said the most horrible thing to his son that I think I’ve ever heard a father say to a child in a work of fiction (tbh, it resonated with me because my father told me something similar, so I’m probably biased here)? Why wouldn’t he run Asgard into the ground out of spite or imbalance?
Then in Ragnarok, we find out that
he hasn’t. He’s just watching plays about himself, eating grapes, and being a hedonist. But meanwhile, he seems to be doing all right at his job. Asgard isn’t on fire and neither are any of the nine realms—well, except the one that’s always on fire ;p.
And yes, it’s funny! The Tragedy of Loki of Asgard is fucking hilarious! Loki’s little “oh shit” when Thor arrives put me on the floor laughing!
But comedy is just tragedy sped up, as a professor of mine once wisely said.
And the real tragedy of Loki here is that he has so much potential and is just
directionless. He sits around with his feet up watching what is essentially bad Asgardian daytime TV while comfort-eating. Which, you know, no depressed or traumatized person has ever done, like, ever. And when he lands on Sakaar, he gets to do what basically amounts to even more of it, with, possibly, wild sex with the Grandmaster on top of that.
And throughout all four movies, Thor is every NT/NOMI sibling who deeply loves their MI brother or sister, but who is at a loss of how to help them. We see him try pleading and reasoning. We see him try threats. We see him try bribery (help me avenge our mother). We see him try guilting and disappointment and even a brand of dark humor.
And then we see him figure it out.
He can’t strongarm Loki into making better, healthier choices, or coping better. He can’t sweet-talk or reason him into it, because mental illnesses don’t tend to respond in the long term to force, empty talk, or even reason.
So he does the one thing that I think works well—or at least, that is beginning to work for me.
Thor stages an intervention.
He tells Loki that he loves him, that he believes in him, that he thinks he can be more than he is and better than he is. That he has the power and the talent and the brains to do it, but that, in the end, the decision is his. Not Thor’s. Not Frigga’s. Not Odin’s . And if he can’t make those choices, Thor can’t be a part of his life anymore.
That’s why “You’ll always be the god of mischief, but you could be more” is the most meaningful movie quote for me of all time. People have been trying to do this for me for years, and I never really understood until that scene just what their efforts meant.
And for a minute, I worried that Taika wouldn’t get it either. But he did.
You see, Loki figures out that his brother is right. And he rises to be his better self. When he shows up in the ark, head held high, and walks through the crowd, he became the king he always wanted to be. When he used his helmet as a weapon to defend his people—and, in the credit animations kneeled while doing so—he became the king he could always have been. And when he stood at his brother’s side, he became so much more than many ever thought possible.
Look, I’m not trying to say that Loki is all sunshine and unicorn sparkles. He’s both an anti-hero and an anti-villain, and he’s probably going to spend the rest of his very long life struggling with, and at times falling prey to, the “grave imbalance” Thor referred to. Which is how a lot of MI people feel and experience life. For example, I see myself as both anti-hero and villain of my own story, not the hero, and often not even the protagonist. That is why I struggle to relate to 99.9999% of protagonists and frankly didn’t find any characters who I felt represented me until I was in my early thirties and saw Frozen.
So I’m not so much interested in “Loki the entertaining, day-drinking asshole” as I am in “Loki the survivor who can be, at times, both entertaining and an asshole (and a day-drinker).”
This is why he’s a valuable character for mentally ill people like me, and the hero—yes, hero—we deserve. Because few characters in mainstream media are allowed to be mentally ill and complex. We’re either portrayed as fragile little victims of our own brains, or violent evildoers who will probably try to kill the nice NT/NOMI protagonist and everyone they love. Or we’re just funny “Hollywood crazy” like Erik Selvig in Dark World (which wasn’t cringy as fuck at all backslash-sarcasm). Or just outright monsters like Hannibal Lechter. Or we’re the Good Kind of Mentally Ill that just sits there and looks Tragic and Pretty and doesn’t cause Problems. Or at least creates some nice art or books before we off ourselves.
We never get to be people. Messy, complicated, but not monstrous people, like NT/NOMIs do.
And Loki gets to be a complicated, messy, thoroughly mentally ill person who is struggling to figure out his place in the world after tremendous loss and a lifetime of feeling like he just doesn’t fit in anywhere.
This is why I’m incredibly, fiercely protective of him and his mentally ill fans. And why I can sometimes get annoyed with interpretations of him that, to me, don’t seem to understand how he’s anything but an entertaining jerk who sometimes does the right thing. Maybe.
(Note: if you like this little ramble, I’m working on a much longer essay about him that will incorporate some of these thoughts. If you REALLY liked this, please consider buying me a ko-fi to help a disabled, queer writer create more in-depth pieces about media we know and love--or sometimes don’t.)

Can we talk about how friggin human the Sailor R anime [almost arguably] makes Neo-Queen Serenity??
Legit, just think about the events that had to happen and the amount of people that had to die in order to create Crystal Tokyo. Some chick with magical, super human abilities rises up to the world to claim her throne because she believes that once in power she’ll make it the picture of perfection, war breaks out cuz BRUH you think the world leaders would EASILY give up their nations and sovereignty, do you think the vast majority of people would give that part of their identity up??? That war gets SO BAD that it threatens to extinct the human race that Serenity Holy nukes the planet to bring every nation to its knees and wins the war.
It gets better.
The war’s over, but she’s not done yet. She straight up tells every individual that if they bow down to her and allow her to remove every negative thought and feeling, she’ll give them a [borderline] immortal life with no aging or disease. This will insure her perfect planet becomes a reality. Those who refuse, will be sent away to the far reaches of the Galaxy to who cares where. Thus, The Cleansing.
How many people do you think died being transported through space? How many died reaching Nemesis and being unable to quickly adapt to the toxic atmosphere? How many died during the first 5 years of settlement, crap we already know what a Hell it was for the first new settlers of any unknown/undeveloped land, imagine that but 10x harder. The new settlers of Nemesis obviously had to get imports/charity sent to make it at all livable. Cuz, crap I don’t think the Neo-Queen is that heartless to leave an untold number of people out to die. But maybe she did, cuz crap, the Neo-King was sure surprised when telling the Senshi about it, he figured they had gotten rid of those problem people a long time ago. Not even referencing them as human since now their spawn have meshed with the Dark Crystal’s power in order to create the legit antithesis of the White Moon Kingdom.
And I just love love love how Prince Demando makes it very clear that “they’re finally getting vengeance for their banished ancestors.” How far ago was that? How many generations had to live the Hell that was Nemesis?? How many children had to pay for the precieved sins of their forefathers??? How long did these people put up with being driven away from their home planet, thrown away, and ignored before actually finally going out and rebelling?
To them, I believe when they started to see their continuing bloodline develop powers, that was what shot up an entire gleam of hope to the forgotten population. That maybe, just maybe, they’ll have enough power to equally compete with the Neo-Earth Kingdom. They could someday have a future where they can experience the warmth of the Sun again, instead of through the vague words that those who still remember or in the unimpressive library of books from Earth that the first settlers have brought in the number of prized possessions they could take with them.
That hope and that bitter hatred was most likely what drove Nemesis so far as an actual functional civilization and race. Obsessed with power, obsessed with being ahead, obsessed with beating the Neo-Earth Kingdom at their own game.
It’s all so tangible and REAL.
Do I believe that it takes away from who Usagi and Sailor Moon is? Does it make her actually a scheming, evil person who had always wanted to dominate the world? Was Neo-Queen Serenity actually the Big Bad of the Arc? NO. It just made her naive to what it means to create one person’s vision of a Utopia.
This takes away from Neo-Queen Serenity being more of an enigma or a perfect celestial being of peace into an actual person with flaws. With the ability to become a monster, herself, like anyone else.
Utopias cannot exist with out a severe price being paid. As long as people are human, with flaws, selfish wants, and desires, you will never get to a utopia. Ever.
That’s why in all honesty Wiseman was such a stupid character, with no reason to exist. A character to turn such a deep, rich, world view shaking story filled with a crap ton of grey into Black v White, defeat the big evil guy and lets not think about what the heck Neo-Earth Kingdom actually was.
Just. IMAGINE what kind of story could’ve been told. The Black Moon and the Senshi are duking it out like any other baddie. Thinking them as evil monsters, and how dare they go back in time to mess up the awesome future?!
And through actually visiting that future, learning what happened, and who those evil monsters actually are. It’d be a big fat ugly punch to the face. It would be Usagi deeply looking at herself, looking at what she had become because she thought she knew what was best for the world. Because she just wanted eternal peace and no suffering, no matter what. Because she loves too much.
Perhaps, that’d be the point where she and the Senshi come to terms with the fact that, times have changed. The White Moon Kingdom AND the old Earth Kingdom are gone. Serenity and Endymion CAN’T reclaim their thrones, because it’s not theirs anymore.
The Season ending with her talking to Prince Demando, as he fades away. Promising that the war and Cleansing will never come, and how she’ll continue to protect her home world--but never abuse it to protect it from itself. He knows it’s true, cuz crap, he knows that he’s fading because the future that he came from doesn’t exist anymore. His people didn’t have to suffer anymore, his friends and brother didn’t have to die because of this stupid Earth-Nemesis war. It’s an odd existential death, but it’s one that brings great peace to him.
And maybe when Chibiusa goes back to the 30th Century to the loving embrace of her mother, we’d see two brothers, with their friends walking off in the distance laughing at their smug douche poking fun at their crushing friend. A flawed world, but a free future.
And then I die.

13. Introduce your current party.
So, currently I’m involved with 3 (going on 4) campaigns at the same time, so I’ll briefly introduce the parties involved with those.
In one game, set in a homebrew setting one of my friends has, we have Jerodin, my half-elf bard, and Balaviir, a dragonborn paladin. Jerodin is kind of a flirty mess that acts on impulse, while Balaviir is a lot more straight laced and stoic. They make for a good duo. Honestly, having seen some of The Witcher television series after having played with this party for a bit, it’s funny how close their dynamic is to Jaskier and Geralt, respectively.
In another homebrew setting by a different friend, we have Fendalynn, my warlock who’s race is a custom humanoid dragon species, unique to that setting, and Dumond, a human monk turned vampire warlock. These two are...not only not a good match for each other, they’re both quite selfish and working towards their own, unique goals. While it sounds difficult to play with (it is), it’s also quite hilarious seeing how two people that can’t stand each other interact on a given quest or topic. Like, the only reason they get involved in the first place is Fendalynn is the daughter of a noble who’s shipped her off to some new country to force her to find her own path in life, and Dumond is a glorified street rat who’s conjured up this myth of skills he may or may not possess to land a bodyguard-type position to protect Fendalynn in this new country. It’s quite interesting, honestly.
In the last campaign being ran, I am the DM, and my players are the DMs of the other two games. Set on Ravnica, the party consists of Akkum, a tiefling warlock who was abandoned by her parents and left to effectively raise herself on the streets of Ravnica’s slums, before eventually meeting her patron and joining the Rakdos soon after, and Zataz, a vedalkin Izzet sorcerer who was, unbeknownst to Akkum (though public knowledge to the players), friends with her parents. Some time after meeting, through his own superior deductive reasoning, he was able to piece together that Akkum was the ‘deceased’ daughter of his former friends, of whom he was supposed to be the godfather of, and takes her under his wing. Despite this, she is left in the dark of his relationship to her and her parents, and instead they simply work as partners, with Akkum being an entertainer for a local club, and Zataz creating and maintaining her pyrotechnics and the like, all the while keeping an eye on her and keeping her safe.
14. Introduce any other parties you have played in or DM-ed.
My first ever campaign was...a long time ago. I barely remember the details. In that campaign, of indeterminate setting, we had Kabox, my half-elf figther who really wanted to be a wizard, a human wizard, who’s name I forget, that offered to one day train my fighter in the arts of magic, and a drow rogue, played by my brother, who’s name I also forget. Talk about the dumbest bunch of adventurers out there. My fighter was a borderline pacifist, wishing to avoid combat through conversation before inevitably having to bust out his sword, and again, deeply wanted to be a wizard instead of a fighter. The Wizard was somehow intelligent but lacked any and all common sense, just kind of breezing through life, and my brother’s drow character was secretly evil and just tagged along to kill as many things as possible, taking intimate joy in watching my fighter fail an attempt at negotiating peace and then killing the enemy as inhumanely as possible. Granted, we were all super new to D&D, this being our first game ever, but it was also a lot of fun.
Another campaign we just ended recently used the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist module, and featured two parties, as the first party was killed by the villain of the campaign after we screwed up pretty badly.
The first party was Folimira, or Foli for short, who was a half-orc fighter, and Ellie (I think, I suck at names), a human...I honestly can’t remember what she was. She was kind of an odd character to be honest (not in a bad way). Foli had been exiled from her clan for trying to get intimate with the chieftain's daughter, despite her being in an arranged marriage, and Ellie had been sent to Waterdeep for reasons regarding her doing something bad in her past and her allies more or less wanting her out of the picture. They ended up meeting in a tavern, helped beat up some monsters, and became quick friends. Eventually, however, they learned too much about things they shouldn’t have, and were killed by the main villain of the campaign, after being tricked to kill someone for them.
The second party, taking over where the others left off, was Nezira, an orc cleric, and Annastriana (I think that’s how you spelled it), a drow rogue...I think. Nezira is actually the chieftain’s daughter that Foli was involved with, mentioned above, who seeks to flee from her arranged marriage and be with Foli. Instead, she learns of her death, and seeks revenge. Going to the place they had been staying, she meets, Anna, who is seemingly working for one of the guilds of Waterdeep, seeking the very information that got Foli and Ellie killed in the first place. Both in seek of the villain at the end of this rabbit hole, they reluctantly joined up. While they both found the villain, Foli seeking revenge for the death of her love and Anna seeking treasure, they too were defeated, but as the villain had already gotten the treasure they sought, they left the ‘heroes’ alive, robbed and left only with their shame.
19. Do you or your party have any dice superstitions?
I’m not entirely sure. The only one I can think of off hand is in regards to a d20 I own that, for the longest time, almost consistently rolled 3s. I remember one time I brought this up to a friend, rolled it to prove it, and sure enough, rolled a 3. It was pretty nuts.
Sorry for the long post, didn’t want to leave anyone out. XD

Characters Want: Even in Kaiju Eiga
When I was teaching intro fiction during my MFA, one of the things I’d tell students was that envisioning a story was as simple as determining specifics for the following: someone wants something in a time and place.
From there, the author’s imagination can run wild. Who is the person? What are they after? Is it immediate or long-term? Concrete or emotional? Do they live in Russia during the collapse of the Soviet Union, or in your apartment building two doors down in 2016? You know they’re going to go after what they want, or at least fail to do so in some interesting, deeply imagined way, and so they find themselves at the center of their own story. We’ll get to open the window on an emotionally charged moment in their lives, and close it when the moment is done.
When people think of kaiju movies, they do not envision characters this way. Perhaps it’s because they play a visual second fiddle to their 80-meter (fify, if you’re a purist) co-stars. Perhaps it’s because for many of the genre’s high points, they’ve been pleasantly rendered archetypes. That’s okay. What I’m about to lay out is that the characters should still want. More specifically, and something understood by prominent Golden Age Godzilla screenwriters Takeshi Kimura and Shinichi Sekizawa, and more recently Hideaki Anno, their wants should dovetail with the monster action onscreen. That is, their desires and personalities should give them a reason to be involved with Godzilla and all of his monstrous cohorts. Never should it feel as if they’re simply there, trapped in the wrong place at the wrong time.*
I feel like every time I wind up discussing Godzilla 2014 on Toho Kingdom, I get closer and closer to creating a full-on Plinkett-style review of why despite all the right visual and design choices, it winds up being an emotionally hollow experience. Basically, it comes down to realizing that the reason Godzilla movies register isn’t simply because they feature a giant, fire-breathing invincible saurian, but because the people affected by his presence afford for interesting stories and commentary. It’s about realizing that, in fact, all the surface-level elements can be right, even beautifully executed, as is the case in that film, and the movie can still ring hollow because the characters it involves are simply ciphers who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I thought surely this was an issue shared by any number of the less stellar Japanese entries--characters whose involvement feels incidental, and therefore has trouble saying anything emotionally or intellectually--but let’s actually do a quick breakdown. In how many movies do the characters have a personal reason to be involved in the action, and in how many are they simply around because they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time?
A full breakdown of all the motivations among focal characters in Godzilla movies:
Godzilla (1954): A love triangle places three young people at the center of a decision that will shake Japan and the Earth when Godzilla arrives. Meanwhile, Professor Yamane’s justified interest in Godzilla as both a zoological find and a goldmine of research in combatting radiation poisoning puts him at odds with both his family and the government.
Godzilla Raids Again: We get a relative sense of what side-character Kobayashi wants, which gets some pathos out of a decision he makes in the climax, but by and large this is a story of characters in the wrong place at the wrong time. Does anyone love this movie?
King Kong vs. Godzilla: Mr. Tako’s desire for a kaiju-sized spectacle puts him and his hapless employees at the center of a brawl between Godzilla and Kong. An inventor and his loved ones get thrown into the mix due to the usefulness of his invention and proximity to the above-mentioned characters.
Mothra vs. Godzilla: In the second-best movie in the franchise (no arguments), our first among many teams of spunky reporters and scientists’ humanitarian interests put them at odds with both the slimy fat-cats laying claim to Mothra’s egg and the transgressions of human governments as they appeal to Infant Island’s better side. (Of note: The movie rightfully gets flack for their presence in the climax, in which they’re tasked with saving a bunch of kids after the monster action kicks off because they’re simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their real roles end about twenty minutes before the movie does.)
Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster: A reporter-policeman sibling pair get roped into some kaiju action due to their mutual interest in a princess convinced she’s a Venusian. King Ghidorah arrives for a guest appearance in Roman Holiday With Giant Monsters.
Invasion of Astro-Monster/Monster Zero: Nick Adams plays an astronaut who wants to put it in an evil space lady. His partner is a no-nonsense older brother who doesn’t approve of his younger sister’s marriage to a hapless inventor whose rape alarm might be the only device possible of stopping an alien plot to use giant monsters against the governments of Earth. You almost forget Godzilla and Rodan show up.
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster: A group of twenty-somethings get shanghaied by their friend when he tries to steal a boat to search for his brother. It turns out the boat was already stolen by the bank robber on board. While searching for said brother and overcoming personal shortcomings, they run afoul of a band of terrorists and have to set Godzilla loose on them. A native islander interested in saving her people also gets involved.
Son of Godzilla: A team of scientists, a never-take-no-for-an-answer reporter, and an island woman they encounter have to overcome differences to protect each other and their important weather experiments when both they and the Godzilla family come up against Kumonga and other giant insects. They all have personal and ideological reasons to be on, and stay on, the island through the end.
Destroy All Monsters: A team of super-science heroes wind up combatting an alien plot to turn Earth’s monsters against it because they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. None of them have any personality.
All Monsters Attack: A latchkey kid dreams about befriending Minilla in a universe in which Godzilla and co. are fictional, maybe?
Godzilla vs. Hedorah: A young boy maintains unshakeable belief in Godzilla as a fantastic hero who can combat a fantastic representation of the rampant pollution of industrializing Japan. His father is a scientist who’s maybe a bit too interested in studying and finding a solution to Hedorah. His uncle and the uncle’s girlfriend are hippies who host an end-of-the-world party at Mt. Fuji, because that’s the kind of people they are.
Godzilla vs. Gigan: A struggling mangaka winds up at the center of the plot of alien cockroaches because his girlfriend is insistent he find work (so good). The rest of the crew are spunky civilians who task themselves with investigating the situation for various personal reasons. Godzilla and Anguirus show up because something funny’s going on; better check it out.
Godzilla vs. Megalon: Okay, so two dudes own a robot that gets stolen and is a central point of the film’s plot (“plot”?), but by and large this is a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe Jet Jaguar’s the real main character.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974): A group of spunky reporters and scientists’ investigations into various mysteries on puts them close to both a villainous plot and some light commentary on the plight of the Okinawan people.
Terror of Mechagodzilla: An Interpol agent’s investigation and infatuation with the daughter of someone he’s assigned to investigate plays a key role in stopping a crisis, as do the personal decisions of the daughter.
Return of Godzilla: A reporter and survivor of a Godzilla attack wind up deciding to become part of government action against a newly awoken Godzilla. To be honest, this is kind of a borderline case, as their involvement is pretty incidental, stemming from an early encounter with Godzilla, and they’re really pretty lightly defined outside of that, though everyone still has a personal reason to not just go home.
Godzilla vs. Biollante: Our main characters include a scientist who wants to use a combination of Godzilla DNA and rose cells to bring his dead daughter back to life. A younger scientist comes to grips with the ethics of genetic research, and an aging military character decides to pin his pride on stopping Godzilla as a younger generation seems poised to rise to the top. We get introduced to Miki Saegusa, a psychic without much to do here, but who will eventually become one of the earliest figures sympathetic to this continuity’s Godzilla.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: I’m sure I’ll write an essay-length post on this at some point, but a cast of characters with various personal and philosophical stakes in Godzilla come together for a sweeping series of complicated statements about Japan’s meteoric economic rise.
Godzilla vs. Mothra: A family drama about divorced parents takes center stage in a universe in which their only chance to make amends with one another involves interaction with Mothra and her twin fairies.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1993): A robotic engineer’s desire to prove himself within special anti-Godzilla projects and a scientist’s personal connection to a newly hatched Godzilla keep them at the center of the action. Saegusa becomes a full-on champion for Godzilla in this movie.
Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla: In this movie, which is 105 hours long, a rogue ex-military character seeks revenge against Godzilla for his friend’s death, and most of the action revolves around him and his choices.
Godzilla vs. Destroyah: Focal characters include the niece and nephew of Emiko Yamane from the original film, who become involved in the Godzilla plot due to reporting and producing an independent study on the monster, respectively. All characters disappear into command centers halfway through the movie, which is too bad, but the setup is all nicely motivated.
Godzilla (1998): Everyone is a horrible cartoon, but between our venerable stable of Reporters and Scientists with interpersonal drama, as well as some French secret agents, everyone has a reason to stick around in New York.
Godzilla 2000: A father-daughter team run an independent Godzilla prediction network because it’s their hobby and belief it’s the best way to handle the monster. The antagonist is a hawkish head of a government crisis organization and former colleague of the main character until their differing opinions on Godzilla put them at odds. A reporter’s desire for more Godzilla coverage keeps her close to the GPN. Everyone is there because they want to be.
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus: Military revenge plot + slacker scientist driven to prove himself keeps everyone around for personal reasons.
GMK: A reporter for a bad cable cryptozoological show’s desire for higher quality content finds her pursuing myths surrounding a newly resurrected Godzilla. Her father is a patriotic military officer who considers it his duty to go up against the supernatural threat.
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla: A military character responsible for the deaths of her colleagues during a confrontation against Godzilla finds restored purpose in the opportunity pilot the latest superweapon against him. Mechagodzilla itself is designed a lonely single father, whose daughter finds reason in the the project and proximity to the main character to come to grips with the death of her mother. It’s all much sillier than it sounds, but oh well.
Tokyo S.O.S.: A guy
likes machines? And gets to pilot Mechagodzilla and come to terms with its spiritual desires? He convinces the government to listen to Mothra because his uncle happens to be the main character from her original movie? This is pretty messy; the characters sort of have a reason to be there, but their involvement with the plot doesn’t seem to speak to any personal arcs or bigger ideas. Their roles feel pretty coincidental as a result.
Final Wars: A team of super-science heroes wind up combatting an alien plot to turn Earth’s monsters against it because monster-hunting is their full-time job. None of them have any personality.
Godzilla (2014): Joe Brody gets closer and closer to a clandestine giant-monster-tracking organization because of his desire to reveal a cover-up surrounding his wife’s death. Dr. Serizawa has dedicated his life to said organization because he believes its research can help stop atrocities like his father witnessed at Hiroshima. Instead of following those characters, we follow Ford Brody, who has no personal connection to goings on and whose sole motivation is an Odyssean desire to get home despite constantly being waylaid by giant-monster-related combat and destruction. A character who is continuously in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Shin Godzilla: A team of politicians find themselves at the center of plans to stop Godzilla due to various personal motivations: careerism, a sense of outsiderness, patriotism, pragmatism and personal confidence, etc. There are side characters who aren’t committed to their jobs and simply find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that’s because it’s realistic and offers contrast to the characters we do follow, for whom the experience is a watershed moment.
That’s around six or seven movies in the series wherein the focal characters don’t have very clear reasons to want to be involved in the plot, and instead simply have to react to Godzilla’s presence in a way that doesn’t speak to personal motivations or ideas. Some of those are quickie camp sequels; two are spectacle-heavy team action movies that don’t pretend to be character pieces. Godzilla 2014 is unique in presenting itself as a character-centric film, one with plenty of time and budget put into it, but that follows someone who would be a side character in any other Godzilla film.
Even in spectacle-heavy movies, we don’t want these types of characters to be our focal point into the world. We sense the hand of the author selecting them. These aren’t their personal stories. They’re the stories of someone who wants an audience to see Godzilla, and could only half-imagine a person-shaped vehicle for facilitating it. Even a kaiju eiga should feel richly imagined. We want to believe its characters, however lightly drawn, can exist off-screen, and that the reason they’re there stems from their own wants and needs.
*I’ll say that it’s not that someone trapped by circumstances couldn’t provide an interesting focal character. But in absence of a reason to stay involved, we need to understand how personal arcs are going to be informed by their proximity to the action. It is important we understand, again, why this is a relevant moment to open and shut a window into their life, rather than just “that time I survived Godzilla, and let me tell you, there were some pretty close calls!”
