Lan Wangji: the Model Student Edition
AKA Lan Wangji’s costumes in the Untamed, part 1/9
I got it in my head to write about Lan Wangji’s costumes in the Untamed for a couple of reasons. One, they’re extremely beautiful and worth paying attention to (as are all the costumes in the series!) and two, they do an excellent job of reflecting his mental state and where he is on his journey as a character. Hence, I’ll always look at them from two points of view, what’s actually happening in the costume, and how the choices made tie to what’s going on while he wears it. Note that I’m not going to even attempt to touch on how they connect to actual historical clothing (you’ll need an expert for that, which I’m definitely not).
I decided to make separate posts for each outfit rather than try to cram all of them in one post (or a few posts). I suspect this’ll be long enough anyway, since I’ll cover some common elements in his outfits in this one, and the images also add to the length. I tried not to go too crazy with the number of the images, although I suspect there’ll be more in the latter posts that cover some of his more elaborate costumes. I had a bit of fun with my image choices as you’ll see (also several times I forgot I was meant to capture stuff and just kept watching, as one does 😂).
Without further ado, let’s start with the outfit Lan Wangji had on when he walked into Wei Wuxian’s life. This outfit was worn mainly in episodes 3-7, briefly in episode 8, and also in WWX’s memories in episode 1.
The Costume
In my head this goes in the simple-but-formal category of LWJ’s outfits, meaning he has the full amount of layers on, and the fabrics are of the usual high quality, but they have no particular texture, and there’s not much embroidery. This almost feels like the basic Lan disciple outfit upgraded to a higher level, which goes nicely with the fact that even though he is the Second Jade of Lan, he’s also a student among the rest of them.
First some basics about the robes the Lan Sect members wear, possibly obvious stuff, but I’ll cover it anyway. They are usually made of fairly lightweight fabrics (that move beautifully in action scenes, I might add), although those of higher rank also have robes made of fabrics with more texture and weight. They’re always white or shades of blue, again more blue for those of higher rank (if they so choose), and the cloud pattern is usually embroidered at least somewhere (significantly LWJ has two outfits with no cloud embroidery).
Innermost layer consists of the white pants and the undershirt that seems to be standard for everyone, we see LWJ (in episode 43), LQR (in episode 33), and WWX (in episodes 42-45) all wear similar shirts. The actors aren’t necessarily wearing all the layers due to heat, but we’re meant to believe they’re always there and that cultivators are just immune to the sun or something. (In that bts video where they bicker on the boat we actually see Wang Yibo wearing the undershirt when he pulls back his sleeves, meaning he’s in five layers and somehow looks cool as a cucumber, while Xiao Zhan is dying of heat 😂). Next come two or three sets of robes, possibly always meant to be three, since the Lans are formal like that, but we don’t see that many with every costume. Then comes a sash to keep the robes closed, and for those of higher rank optionally another robe on top (which LWJ and LXC don’t always wear).
Here’s another look at the costume, with a bonus WWX. This was obviously chosen solely because it shows the silhouette very well.
As I mentioned earlier, this outfit has all the elements listed above, including a robe worn over the sash, but there aren’t too many details. The fabric is certainly meant to be silk, and possibly even is. Whoever did the hemming of the robe definitely struggled enough for it to be silk (modern detail that one, btw, you wouldn’t sew it like that by hand. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t just do that, making an invisible hem isn’t actually that slow, but maybe it’s still significant when you need to make so many costumes). The sash is very basic, with no decoration at all, but he of course has the waist ornament with the jade pieces and tassel, which is one of the two things he always wears, in addition to his forehead ribbon. The white shoes are maybe the biggest flex from the Lan Sect, just imagine how much time would be needed to clean and replace all of them, especially since the climate at the Cloud Recesses is definitely rainy, and then there are the night hunts.
Above is the top seen in detail, we have his first head ornament (which is very cute, IMO), and the forehead ribbon. Interestingly it’s pale blue rather than white (as I believe it’s in the book). Blue is slightly less stark against the skin, so that may have been the reason. Then there’s the embroidery on the lapels, the Lan Sect clouds done with white on white, basically the least extravagant you can get and still have them. We only see one more layer, I believe. There’s blue and white in the collar, but looking at how it overlaps I think it’s just one robe with two colors. But hey, a teeny tiny bit of color on him at least!
Another detail to note is that if he has narrow sleeves visible, there are always fabric bands wrapped around the wrists, yet another bit of complexity and formality to his outfits. He also has them with this costume, you don’t see them that many times because the big sleeves cover them pretty well, but we get a nice glimpse of them when LWJ and WWX are tied together with the forehead ribbon in the cave, see below.
Yes, I capped the moment where they collapse to the ground after getting out of the cave. I have to get my amusement somehow, but it was actually the one where you can see the detail best. 😂 (I also tried the part where LWJ ties the ribbon but all the caps came out blurry, so this one it is). LWJ’s hand is the top one, obviously, and WWX has just a regular sleeve end there.
The Context
When LWJ first walks into the scene in episode 3, he’s at peace with himself in that his world makes sense, he has a clear understanding of who he is and what his responsibilities are. I’m not saying it has come without struggle considering everything to do with his mother (I bet LQR was just thrilled when he moved to the Jingshi, which all things considered probably hadn’t happened that long before the start of the story), but it looks like it’s something that’s been worked out. Also, when I say his world makes sense, I don’t mean that he’s completely happy about everything (if I had to define it, I’d go for comfortably neutral), just that there are no particular issues that he doesn’t know how to react to until WWX comes and turns everything upside down.
Much of the past timeline for LWJ is about his struggle between his loyalty to his sect and what he perceives as his duty, and his connection with WWX. This can be seen reflected in his costumes as well. Broadly speaking (obviously individual scenes can shift the focus for a time), when he wears predominantly white with wide sleeves (his more formal outfits) it signals that he’s particularly conscious of his duty and his upbringing, while his blue outfits with narrow sleeves (arguably more casual ones) come to play when he’s more forcefully pulled by his connection with WWX. Notably, he also wears one mostly white outfit with narrow sleeves, but we’ll get to that later.
At this point of the story, the real struggle hasn’t yet started for him, he’s (mostly) the perfect model student that he was taught to be literally from birth, and his outfit reflects that. He’s definitely thrown by the effect WWX has on him, as it’s most likely a completely new experience, but he also considers it nonsense that he intends to drop (or boring, as he has a tendency to say). When he sets out alone, I’d say it’s with the idea that he can just leave what happened in summer school behind and focus once more on his responsibilities. Clearly there’s some regret that he feels because of it, as we witnessed his undoubtedly warm feelings toward WWX when hearing his resolution in the lantern scene, but right after that moment he focuses on the Yin Iron once more and maybe chooses that road (only he doesn’t get to walk it alone, WWX is stubborn like that).
Next time, blue robes and the point of no return for LWJ just whooshes on its way behind them.
(You can find the rest of this series via “lwj costume series” tag below, or through my blog contents page. I’d link for ease of access but the links made it disappear from tags, so. 😒)

i wanted LWJ with a motorcycle & somehow ended up with this librarian!LWJ & art student!WWX au
LWJ is a librarian at a public library
WWX met LWJ when he returned some books 3 months late
LWJ looked at him all judgy like “these are 3 months late,” & WWX promptly became obsessed
WWX is now a much more responsible library user, mostly because he’s there all the time
but listen he’s not great at focusing in the library, that’s why he doesn’t even use the one on campus. so now he’s his usual amount of restless + distracted by LWJ
trying to figure out how to make a move
meanwhile LWJ is just like “do not throw crumpled pieces of paper through the air”
some of those crumpled pieces of paper are failed sketches of LWJ
one day WWX stays all the way to closing because LWJ PRETTY OKAY? also he has an art theory paper due pls don’t talk to him about it
so anyway he’s there when the library is closing & LWJ is like “leave”
so he goes :((( but he’s so late LWJ practically follows him out
which
is when WWX discovers that that pretty white & blue motorcycle that’s always parked out front?
that’s Lan Wangji’s
he absolutely loses his mind
all of his friends know about his ridiculous librarian crush by now & they all make fun of him for it
but anyway, the poor boy has it bad
he’s like “A-Cheng, you don’t understand, he could step on me & i’d thank him. actually i think i need him to step on me.”
JC is like “i did Not want to know that”
meanwhile WWX is bemoaning the fact that he ever became a responsible library user
“how am i supposed to interact with him. i can’t return books late anymore bc i’m always there! what would my excuse be? & he’s already explained how to use their database to me 3 times, i can’t keep looking this dumb”
JYL is very gently like “maybe just ask him out?”
“but he doesn’t like me! i committed library crimes! i have to get him to like me first!”
then WWX sees a flyer in the lobby asking for volunteers. there’s gonna be an event in the kids section! for some special reading day! who tf knows, WWX doesn’t care, the point is, he’s good with kids. that would probably be appealing to LWJ. right? right? WWX really doesn’t know. LWJ is so hard to read. on the one hand, he’s the most tight-laced & responsible person WWX has ever met. on the other, he has a very sexy motorcycle. WWX doesn’t know what to do with that
but okay he has a plan
he calls up WQ & goes “can i borrow A-Yuan”
he already babysits A-Yuan every week, so it’s not that weird right?
WQ is like “i stg WWX if you are going to use A-Yuan to attract hot guys like in that movie with the people who love dogs....”
& WWX is like “i would never use A-Yuan like a dog! WQ do you even know me!”
he gets A-Yuan, barely
anyway, he gets to the library ready to read to a bunch of kids & gets side-eyed by a lot of parents, but he still has fun!!
LWJ is, unfortunately, not the librarian supervising the event, but he is reshelving when WWX is off reading duty & A-Yuan gets the zoomies
ie, zooms right into LWJ’s legs
LWJ is, surprisingly, good with kids. WWX may need to marry him. he somehow manages not to make a complete fool of himself after this revelation
in fact, after this interaction, WWX thinks he may actually have scored some points with LWJ. he’s elated
he’s building all these elaborate future schemes in his head when suddenly he gets a call from Auntie Yu
she wants to know why his grade in his art theory class has plummeted.
oh right. that class. that class that’s taught by that professor who hates him & that he honestly can’t understand a word of & honestly he hates art theory, he’s good at art, why does he have to take theory too?
Auntie Yu lets him know in no uncertain terms that if he doesn’t improve his grades by the end of the semester, she will stop supporting him—it’s bad enough that they let him go to art school after he flunked out of his business degree anyway
so—fuck. fuck.
WWX throws himself into the redo paper he manages to beg off LQR. he has 3 days & he’s gonna make them count
the first day goes well, if by well you mean that he raids the art section of the library & works himself until closing & tries desperately not to look like he’s dying in front of LWJ
day 2 goes........similarly, except he falls asleep at his desk & doesn’t wake up until LWJ tells him the library is closing, which? wtf? LWJ usually wakes him up when he falls asleep in the library. WWX has been asleep for hours.
& also he looks like a wreck, which is not cute
he flees from the library only to find that the bus is going..... going......... gone
fuck. he doesn’t have a car.
he’s staring down the road after the bus, trying to figure out which friend with a car is available for him to call when he hears someone say “Wei Ying?” behind him
it’s Lan Zhan.
how mortifying.
he tries to laugh off his situation, but LWJ gets this set expression on his face & says, “i will give you a ride home”
& WWX is like kinda definitely freaking out because this was not how his first ride on LWJ’s sexy motorcycle was supposed to go. WWX had a plan. he was supposed to be flirtatious & ask LWJ about his bike & then LWJ would offer to give WWX a ride & they’d go all around the scenic parts of the city & when they stopped WWX would be all flustered & breathless & he’d wobble getting off the bike & maybe fall into LWJ & maybe—
okay so his plan was more like a daydream, but at the very least, he wasn’t supposed to look like he’d spent the last 48hrs out of the sun, drinking unhealthy amounts of shitty coffee, wearing a ratty hoodie & art-grimed jeans. like, they’re not even grimey in a cute way
but LWJ is insistent & WWX is weak, so somehow he ends up on the back of the bike wearing LWJ’s helmet with LWJ telling him to hold on tight
he’s half-convinced he’s fallen asleep on the bus stop bench & is dreaming the whole thing
but soon enough, it’s over & they’re stopped outside of WWX’s shitty student accommodations
he gets off & is trying to awkwardly thank LWJ when LWJ says, “you’ve seemed upset these past 2 days”
“ahaha, yeah, i’m just writing a paper”
“for an art theory class?”
WWX is like ????? but then he remembers that LWJ knows what books he checks out
“yeah. it’s a redo actually. professor Lan hates me.” he forces a laugh. why did he say that. being hated by a professor is not cute, especially not to sexy librarian LWJ.
“my uncle has high expectations,” LWJ says.
WWX brain short circuits.
“your uncle???” shit shit shit Lan Qiren is LWJ’s uncle! LWJ’s uncle hates him! he has no chance now!
“mn.”
WWX wants to die
LWJ looks considering, then says, “it is my day off tomorrow. if you would like, i can help you with the paper.”
WWX is already the least cute, most pathetic version of himself he’s ever been in his life. he says yes.
so they meet up at the library the next day & WWX apologizes profusely for making LWJ come into work when it’s his day off. he promises LWJ endless free coffee from the coffeeshop he works at (even if he has to pay for it himself—he doesn’t tell LWJ that part).
LWJ is way too nice to him & also manages to explain this school of art theory in a way that?? sort of?? makes sense?? though not in a way that makes WWX like it. but LWJ seems neutral about it, so at least he’s not trying to get WWX to agree with it.
but anyway, WWX manages to pull a passable paper together & in the process LWJ reveals that he’s noticed WWX sketching in the library a lot more than WWX realized, and that he likes WWX’s art.
WWX is lightheaded
he stares at LWJ for a while & LWJ looks at him & says, “Wei Ying. you should be typing.”
WWX gets the paper done by 5pm somehow. somehow! he sends it off to LQR with a groan of relief. he’s so tired his bones are aching, but he looks over at LWJ, art theory & citation king, who of course always looks perfect & beautiful, & goes, “i could kiss you.”
instead of “i don’t know how i’m ever going to thank you for this,” which is what he thought he was gonna say
LWJ’s eyes widen slightly & his ears go red. WWX wants to smack himself in the face. he wants to eat his words. he wants to crawl into a cramped dark place like a disgusting little mole & never see the sun again.
then LWJ says, “have dinner with me first.”
WWX gapes at him. LWJ looks back, ears still red but eyes steady.
“okay,” WWX squeaks.
they go to dinner. WWX still feels like trash, but they end up having a rousing discussion about art & WWX learns all about when LWJ studied art history in undergrad & how he actually doesn’t like the kind of theory his uncle teaches (“but you’re too good to ever tell him that,” WWX teases. “....most of the time.” WWX laughs in delight.)
LWJ reveals that he brought an extra helmet today, in case WWX needed a ride again. WWX is embarrassed & pleased & wants to marry LWJ again. feeling foolish, he leans into LWJ flirtatiously & suggests they go for a ride—just for the view. LWJ looks at him so long his knees turn to jelly. then LWJ says, “mn.”
they make out on some scenic ridge somewhere
the end!
other things about this au:
WWX does digital painting mostly, his ideal job is illustration/comics; he has a instagram/patreon he uses for art commissions (some of which are pornographic—LWJ catches him sketching in the library one day, early in this tableau. it does not go well.)
his instagram/patreon is mostly anonymous. it’s not that he minds people knowing he draws explicit stuff sometimes, it’s that he doesn’t want Auntie Yu to find out
he draws LWJ a lot
not explicitly
(at least not until he’s got a life model and LWJ’s consent)
he’s not at the library 24/7. he has a coffeeshop job, classes, studio time for non-digital art, A-Yuan, and friends. but he’s at the library a lot.
this is undergrad for WWX, but he’s non-trad. he flunked out of a soul-sucking business degree in his first go at undergrad & was on pretty shaky ground with the Jiang family for a while. then he sold some of his art & Auntie Yu said they would support him through art school if it was the only thing he was good at. kinda stung, but at least he doesn’t have to pay tuition.
he’s desperate to prove he can make it as an artist
when anyone asks LWJ about his bike, he says he got it because it allows him to weave around traffic. yes, there’s more to it than that, but no he won’t go into it. (this entire au formed because i found out WYB rides motorcycles professionally & went, “wow that’s hot.” we have no thoughts here.)
WWX did not have to try to make LWJ like him. LWJ liked him. & while WWX might not have gotten his ideal first bike ride, you better believe LWJ got his. he daydreams about scooping WWX onto his bike & riding off into the sunset

A-Yuan: Gege, what’s inside the basket? [1]
LWJ: Radish.
A-Yuan: Is it for me to eat?
LWJ: Mn. Do you like radish?
A-Yuan: Ayymmnnn. Don’t like... I like eating potato!
LWJ: One must not be a picky eater.
A-Yuan: Hmph!
LWJ: We’re here.
A-Yuan: Little bunnies! Gege, there are so many bunnies! They’re so cute~~!
LWJ: Come here.
A-Yuan: Ah!
LWJ: [picks A-Yuan up]
A-Yuan: Oh. Heh, little bunnies~
LWJ: Here, take this.
A-Yuan: Radish? Bunnies eat radish? Hehehe~ Ahahaha~~! Little bunnies, here eat this little piece of radish. Ay~
LWJ: *sighs* Tired?
A-Yuan: Gege, what are you wearing on your head?
LWJ: This? Forehead ribbon.
A-Yuan: Forehead ribbon? It’s so pretty, I want to wear one as well! [reaches for ribbon]
LWJ: Do not.
A-Yuan: Mm?
LWJ: The forehead ribbon means to “regulate oneself.” It cannot be touched by anyone… except if, in the future, you meet your “fated one”, the person who holds your heart. Only then you can let go of these rules when you are with them.
A-Yuan: Fated one…?
LWJ: Mmn.
[LXC approaches]
LXC: This—?! [sighs]
LWJ: Brother.
[LXC picks up A-Yuan]
A-Yuan: Oh!
LXC: Wangji… this child is so young. You cannot just put him in a pile of rabbits. Even though the rabbits are calm most of the time, if agitated, they will still bite. What if he was injured?
LWJ: Thank you Brother for your advice.
LXC: Ay. I heard from uncle that you plan to give this child the Lan surname and have him enter the Lan sect.
LWJ: Mn.
LXC: Uncle is angry.
LWJ: This time, without cause.
LXC: Mmn. Forget it. If you have convinced uncle, then naturally I have no objections.
A-Yuan: Little bunny, I really like you~ Do you like me~? Like~~!
LXC: Are you certain he remembers nothing from before?
LWJ: Mn.
LXC: It’s for the best. What about his name? Have you thought of it?
LWJ: Lan Yuan. Lan Sizhui.
LXC: Sizhui… it’s a good name.
—
[1] Addendum: One version floating around of this says: "What's in the farm house? [nongfang]” instead of basket [lanzi]. I heard the version without subtitles and A-Yuan sounds like he’s saying “nanfan” (I still think that), so I made a guess.

Musical college au where Wei Ying is a classic flute player and also plays in a jazz band and once in a while he practices dizi in his dorm with his window open and he's heard by Lan Zhan who's a Guqin player and also practices in his room with the window open. Feels like every time Wei Ying is feeling down he can hear the Guqin while gazing at the stars and the music soothes his mind. He starts talking about it with his sister and they both listen to the Guqin when she's visiting. He doesn't know where it's coming from but he loves how it speaks to his heart.
One time Nie Huaisang lost the keys to his apartment and asks Wei Ying to help him by asking his neighbor to let him use his little balcony to jump on Nie Huaisang's balcony. Wei ying loses his words when he sees Lan Zhan at first but he quickly set on his dangerous activity and jumps like it's nothing though they're on the second floor. Nie Huaisang gets back to his place and starts playing at his game immediately. Lan Zhan offers a drink to Wei Ying who laughes because the one who should be treating him has ignored him and closed his apartment door already. They chat a bit and Wei Ying notices the Guqin immediately, realising who the player is he's thrilled and asks Lan Zhan to play for him and explain everything about his instrument and his passion about it. Lan Zhan says a few words but gets carried away when he talks about music. He plays a song he started composing, emphasizing on how it would be perfect if he could play it with the dizi player he hears sometimes and who plays beautifully. Wei ying can't say anything because he receives a call about his sister being injured. He's in panic and runs down but it's late already and there's no more buses. Lan Zhan arrives in his motorcycle and takes him to the hospital. There he sees Wei Ying being extremely devoted and cute with his sister, she's alright and sees Lan Zhan. Wei ying tells her he's the Guqin player and she rejoices at the news, telling him he plays beautifully. After Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying bicker for a moment they're lade to leave the room. Jiang Cheng calls Jin Zixuan while Wei Ying just falls on a chair, all the stress coming down. Lan Zhan rests a reassuring hand on his shoulder and he never wants that feeling to stop. Jin Zixuan arrives, Wei Ying snorts at him but he soon leaves with Lan Zhan after saying goodbye to his sister and brother. Lan Zhan and Wei Ying part at the entrance of the campus going in different directions.
Wei ying plays the melody Lan Zhan composed with his dizi purposefully on his balcony, letting Lan Zhan have a look at where he is. Lan Zhan comes to see him realising he's the flute player. After some talk about how they'd like to play together Wei Ying is late for his band practice. Lan Zhan drives him there and stays to listen. The style is completely different from his austere Guqin lessons and to see Wei Ying have fun while playing the flute is amazing. At break Wei Ying comes to see him telling him he can go but Lan Zhan stays until the end, driving Wei Ying back home.
They organize a music session to play together, especially Lan Zhan's song and they're really getting it together, each instrument responding to the other, they're playful and having fun. When suddenly Lan Zhan receives a call from his brother warning him that his uncle is coming. At first Wei Ying proposes to go but Lan Zhan asks him to stay, as if he'd be a strength to him. Lan Zhan's uncle who raised him and his brother doesn't like that he keeps on his path with music. Lan Xichen was a great daozi player but quit to work at his uncle business after college in Harvard. He supports his brother's path in music. He's heard of the mysterious flute player that Lan Zhan is trying to find in the buildings of his dorm. When Wei Ying hears Lan Xichen introducing himself he's astonished because he's famous in the music world, he shakes his hand joyfully and says he plays the dizi. Lan Xichen turns to WangJi who nods and he knows he's the flute player his brother was talking so much about (well for Lan Zhan it means he talked about him two times). Amused at the new addition they've ignored the glares of the uncle but soon Lan Xichen brings him to the living room while Lan Zhan prepares tea with Wei Ying who asks him if he's ok. He's stiffer than usual and that's a lot to say. Lan Zhan explains his uncle's reluctance at his pursuing the music path and when Wei Ying asks what he can do he says just being there is enough. After some small talk Lan Xichen speaks with Wei Ying on one side and they exchange about LanZhan and how they met, of the particulars of Lan Zhan and they laugh about it. While the uncle is getting louder and angrier at Lan Zhan who looks directly at him, unmoving, not giving in. Lan Xichen takes his uncle off for a visit of the city to leave them alone. Wei ying gives him a hug and reassures him. Lan Zhan is determined to pursue his dream but he's trembling when his uncle leaves. After quieting a bit Wei Ying leaves him.
A knock on the door wakes Wei Ying up early and his eyes half closed and without his glasses recognize Lan Zhan. Wei ying complains about the time but LanZhan came bearing gifts as in breakfast food before going to his early classes. Wei Ying will most likely skip his first class as usual. Wei ying hugs him to thank him for the food and stays there while they chat a bit and Wei Ying wakes fully up when Lan Zhan invites him to a concert he's making with his class. He's joyful about it and let's LanZhan leave with the promise of coming to see him.
At the concert Wei ying arrived a bit late and missed the introduction but he's well placed in the balcony and sees Lan Zhan taking place with his band of classic Chinese instruments. He's wearing clothes of an ethereal blue that captures his attention. Wei Ying is shocked by his beauty. He listens to the beautiful music they're playing, captured by the poetic atmosphere. And then Lan Zhan plays on his own for a good part of the concert, playing solos with the Guqin that infiltrate Wei Ying's heart to the core and he starts crying. He catches his breath at the end of the piece only to be shocked when he listens to the music he knows by heart that Lan Zhan composed. And when he thought he could regain his composure, Lan Zhan starts singing while playing the Guqin and his voice is so simple but strong and beautiful, so soft to the ears, it breaks all of Wei Ying's walls he had inside of him. All the giddiness that covers his thoughts all day explodes and his heart is left on the open, unprotected and fragile, but soothed and cared for by the music and the voice that surround him. He can't see anything at this point and when this is finally over he rushes to the bathroom. He looks in the mirror to see his eyes a full red and his face contorted in an attempt at a smile. He removes his contacts and splashes water on his face but it's not going to do much for him. He gets his glasses from his pocket and tries to calm himself and focus. He's tempted to flee the place right this instant but he feels the need to congratulate Lan Zhan who's surely expecting him to come even though he wouldn't say it. He walks slowly to the backstage, trying to calm down and breathe, working on his best smile. He stops short of Lan Zhan who was on his way to see him. He's taken by surprise and still can't fathom the beauty of Lan Zhan in his dress. Lan Zhan just takes one look at him and guides him to a quieter place. Wei Ying blurts out a congratulations and starts explaining how beautiful it was. Lan Zhan cups his head as he's starting to cry again and stops his words with a kiss. Wei Ying feels everything clicking into place and he feels the warmth and softness of Lan zhan's moving closer to him, taking him in his arms and he reciprocates the hug, burying his face in the crook of Lan zhan's neck.
...
For reference I thought of the boys in this way ^^ pretty biased for Xiao Zhan with glasses since I myself have glasses it's nice to have someone famous wearing real glasses even on stage ^^ so it's a cute and fresh Wei Ying, a bit lost when facing the beautiful and artsy LanZhan ^^
His costume for the concert
