Why do you draw Merry with such a gaunt looking face?

Well, in the case of my most recent comic, the reason he looks so gaunt is because he—as well as Sam and Pippin—are supposed to look…well, dead. The book says that “their faces looked deathly pale”, but since it’s hard to communicate unusual paleness in a black-and-white art style, I opted instead to portray the sunken, shriveled look of a corpse.

It’s probably even more striking on Merry than it is on Sam or Pip, because he doesn’t have round cheeks to soften his face like they do.

As for all the other times I draw him—the reason he has such sharp cheekbones and a chad’s square jawline is because he is, in fact, the chadliest hobbit, and Hot Merry makes a very specific subset of my friends swoon ;-)

Love it when mages/spellcasters in stories have slightly otherworldly traits. Unnatural eye colors/pupil shapes, unusual skin tones/hues, sharp/animal like teeth, nails, or ears, fur/horns/scales/feathers where they'd normally have none, etc.

Could we see the responses of Marty's hair antenna to Doc's different emotions? I love this so much

marty's antennae aren't as expressive as doc's since there's 2 of them (the overlapping shapes would be hard to read) and they're rooted to his head (doc's floats around so it can do whatever it wants) so really he only has 3 different antenna emotes as opposed to doc's many many of them:

basically neutral, !!!, and droopy, or some variation of those 3. again applied based on vibe. also there's a marty bunny in there bc his antennae are shaped like bunny ears sometimes hahaha
