asma, im so happy for you that one of your ships is getting married. What is their dynamic like?
their dynamic is perfect, and literally the blueprint for most ships i’ve loved in my life. but if we want the specifics
in corner number one, we have rogue. riddled with identity issues, full of awesome power she’s never had full control over, and always seeking the right place for herself. she’s got a lot of fierce conviction and ultimately finds fulfillment on the side of the righteous, beating down bad guys and fighting the good fight. but she’s always had to keep people at arm’s length, because her powers can kill at worse and be invasive at best. she’s missing both physical and emotional intimacy for most of her life.
in corner number two, we have gambit. born a thief, used by his adoptive family, and marked as an outsider by both his mutant appearance and abilities. his response to all of this is to fall in love with decadence, to revel in his gray morality and romanticize his own existence. but then he finds himself caught up with and partially responsible for a massacre, so he harbors an immense amount of guilt and ultimately has to fight every inch for the right to be a hero.
the initial draw of rogue and gambit is this– they have wanted each other since almost the moment they met, and yet there’s always a barrier between them. gambit sees rogue and immediately hits on her; she reacts with humor and interest, but ultimately pushes him away because she has to. and so begins one of the world’s most epic games of playing hard-to-get– gambit chases, rogue pushes him away, but there’s an understanding between them that in a perfect world, nothing would stand together.
they’ve both got their romantic complications. gambit was banished from his beloved new orleans and left a young bride behind– a woman who comes back to haunt him and remind him of his past and failures every so often. rogue landed her first boyfriend in a coma, and is terrified that any attempts to get close to anyone else will have the same results. so neither of them come to the other without baggage.
despite all of that, they pull each other up. gambit’s in the process of trying to figure why, and how, he could be a good person. rogue inspires him with her fierce passions, and he goes along for the ride as she becomes more and more of a hero. he does it for her, and she draws on his faith in her for more strength.
when they finally do get to be together, disaster always seems to be waiting around the corner. gambit’s past catches up with him and he gets put on trial for his crimes. rogue is a witness against him because of her semi-telepathic powers, and instead of absolving him she abandons him. it’s only later that they both realize it was gambit’s own self-loathing that was the cause, and not rogue’s own feelings.
he gets captured by an interdimensional villain, and she throws herself in front of a sword that ends up impaling them both in order to protect him. they end up pulling each other back from the astral plane, losing their powers, and moving to california to indulge in each other. eventually, they have to regain their powers and rejoin the x-men, though.
they’re still together and gambit’s ready to fall at rogue’s feet and love her for all time. but they can’t physically be together, and that underscores a number of frustrations in their relationship that lead to constant friction.
rogue’s powers threaten to overwhelm and destroy her, and so gambit joins up with the worst of their kind, steals a baby from the future, and puts all of mutant-kind at risk just to save rogue. he knows she won’t forgive him for it, but he does it anyway, because he can’t let her die.
he turns his back on the world of heroes, because he doesn’t deserve them or her. she throws herself into protecting mutant children and being a front-line warrior for the cause. but when she finally gains control of herself, he’s the one who helps her there, and their kiss is her first experiment in touch in so many years.
but they’re both still figuring themselves out. gambit isn’t always with the x-men, and rogue’s increasingly high profile pulls her away from him. he doesn’t want to be her second choice, so they part on heartbreaking but amicable terms. he gets himself wrapped up in more thievery, and she comes to bail him out. he shows up every time she needs him. she invites him to be an avenger with her, he laughs at the very thought.
but they’re always drawn back together, and somehow they’ve come back to each other, admitted what they’ve always wanted, and are getting married. so that’s pretty amazing, considering their 25 year history of ups and downs.
