It's not totally clear here why Dave's dream self appears to be already awake while his real self is also awake. I think we must infer that his dream self is in some sort of "waking trance" where he's technically awake but too preoccupied by certain things to be considered fully awake.

thinking about jade being lonely as hell on her island and going to sleep waking up on prospit and seeing john (not knowing his name yet) asleep plagued with the creepy dersite doll dreams with the scary teeth and just aughhhh

and she’d like overhear the white queen talk about the dark kingdom derse and the prince(sse)s of the moon that are there and trying to attract as little attention as possible jade would fly out there through the medium because shes so lonely. and she’d go to the purple moons’ towers. she’d find a girl is sound asleep in her purple robes and bed. but the other kid on the moon she finds is awake! except… not really. more like in a trance state. awake but not conscious. but she likes to hear whatever garbled stuff this triangle-speced boy has to say

the trip is long but jade visits this boy a few times since he’s the only non-asleep person like her she can interact with face to face. he usually seems lost in his own world, usually listening to music or talking to himself about stuff that doesnt make much sense. when she’s deprived of sapient affection she’ll touch him in small gestures like holding his hand while he listens to his music and he’ll squeeze back instinctually, and it helps her experience a microdose of the human connection. maybe he doesnt get much in the way of sapient affection either. when she hears The Horrors of the furthest ring another dream headset pops into existence for her to listen along with him and they listen to whatever music hes making. who is he

POV: you’re a little exhausted from team hopping and doing good thing after good thing to finally prove you’re worth the investment just to see your dad again and he doesn’t even say anything to you about the fact you’re still alive and it’s almost like he doesn’t notice you at all but you get to see your oldest little sister again so that’s pretty cool

Could you tell more about Taylor? (it sounds strange, but I'm crazy about him💀)

Taylor has really changed over the years compared to a lot of other characters, and yet I feel like I haven't ever talked in length about him personally before.

He likes to keep to himself, he's a very quiet and private guy who spends most of his time on the move, skateboarding, working out, so on and so forth. He's also been known to enjoy comics and certain movies, though not all that often.

He's got quite the stunning pair of eyes, and as such they tend to be an attractant to unwanted attention. That, and he is most expressive through his eyes. He likes the anonymity of sunglasses, and the ability they give him to observe without drawing attention to himself.

Deep conversation, close relationships, they really aren't his forte. He can talk and he can debate, but if he can help it he'd really rather not. And he tends to come across as rude and stoic when he does engage. He also has a very bitchy resting face, and whether it's forced or he was born into it, it rarely falters.

When the Fault originally took place, he was fine with learning to adapt to bracing the end of the world with someone he was acquaintances with. Close enough to not care about being around him, but it's not like he knows the guy very well. That guy being Zack of course.

Even though they're trekking this apocalypse together, you'd be surprised at how long it takes Taylor to warm up to Zack more than just an acquaintance level. He can handle getting to know one dude he's sort of stuck with, but when he's around a bunch of people, like Zack would lead him to, he really becomes a man of few words.

It's hard for anybody to learn anything about the brick wall that he is. The right types might be able to pull a little more out of him; Hannah, Tanner, really chill people who don't feel the immediate need to pry into him. But for others, one could strike the most charming first liner to a conversation and he'd more than likely pretend he didn't hear it.

Why? Aside from just not being a talker, he believes people need to earn what they get from him. Not the healthiest approach to socializing, but that's who he is. You need to earn a response from him, you need to earn his respect, his history, etc. How to go about earning any of this is something he similarly neglects to share. But I made him and so I can tell you: you need to get him excited, and know how to tell when he is.

He might seem hard to please but he carries his few interests on his sleeves. As long as you stick to what he knows when you talk to him, he can actually be somewhat pleasant to talk to. And when he's pleasant to talk to, you know you've actually got his attention and interest.

It's why Zack, such a carefree and outgoing person, still gets Taylor to stick by his side so well. Zack likes a lot of what Taylor likes, and he knows how to talk about it (Also Zack is just really charismatic and knows how to pull a chat from Taylor anyhow).

He's just a private, athletic dude who's a little bit too serious sometimes. He's strong and he's fast, and he definitely carries himself like he's in charge of his own path, but he honestly functions a little better when he's not the one deciding what to do. He wouldn't admit it, but if Zack weren't in the picture he probably would not have left hometown, and he would have no real aspiration to work towards except to survive.

Now his aspiration is to survive better than anyone else instead, as Zack drags them into increasingly more chaotic situations. He wouldn't admit this either, but Taylor also sort of likes the thrill of doing things he shouldn't, even though he was particularly law-abiding before the Fault.

Is that enough about him? I feel like I could go on, but that's essentially him at his core. Calculating and quiet, but sporty and a bit of a thrill seeker underneath.

Rafal loved Nil and put Nil first but he himself was Nil's second choice. Nel loved "Nil" and by that logic did not love Rafal. Sombron certainly did not love Rafal. His siblings likely ostracized and humiliated him when they weren't trying to kill him, so those relationships were also loveless. Knowing the various formative experiences that shaped his relationship with love, it's very reasonable for Rafal to have a troubled outlook on it.

Reflecting that idea is the fact that Rafal (as Nil) ironically utilizes a lot of like/love and attachment based manipulation, an area of focus that subconsciously belies what he's lacked since his early life.

Nil (to Alear): That's right, Divine One. I quite like you.

Nil (to Nel, about Alear): I am off to sink my teeth into your darling Divine Dragon.

Nil (to Alear, about Nel): If you value her life, you will meet me on the island that once floated among the clouds.

He flippantly uses the word 'like' in order to ingratiate himself with the Divine One. Nel's affection for their Divine One is viciously paraded within earshot to inflame her sense of helplessness. Reversely, he fashions a hostage of Nel to extort the present-day Divine One into doing as he desires. This trivializing and profane treatment of people's emotions evidences his inability to relate to them, particularly in the realm of love and attachment.

Rafal stomps on the bonds wielded between individuals seeing them only as opportunities to manipulate them. "Nil" who has never known love at an age where he could articulate it, or never felt that he was loved for his true self as a young adult, therefore doesn't elevate it as any sacred concept. Instead it's clear that love becomes his tool. He acknowledges that it exists and consigns it to the brutal methods that he pleases, seeing any semblance of it between others as a way to achieve his desired results.

Post-xenologue, Rafal's conceptualization of love changes itself for the better.

Alear, vs. Fell Nil: I'm not here for the world. I'm here for the people in it. I'm here because someone wished for your salvation, even if it meant the world would end. Don't you see? There are people who love you! If I have to defeat you to make that clear, I will!

Nel: That is all in the past. Your friends love you. Think of our time at Lythos Castle. All of us together, as a family.

People fought at great risk to let him know that he's loved, so now it's something that he knows exists in concrete relativity to him. Now, if you ask him what love is, he can give you examples. What he feels for Nel, what he felt for Nil; that's love. The sheer extents that he went to for both of those people is also love, though he'd be able to articulate that less clearly because he knows love more by theory and less by practice. His insular upbringing and the difficulty with expressing his emotions or leaving himself vulnerable means he can only define a surface-level idea of it.

As for his belief in soulmates? Soulmates have adjacency to the role of a Fell Child's twin, someone destined to be at your side (albeit to a point) and to share a profound level of closeness offered by no-one else. The soulmates conceptualized by humans and 'the other half' conceptualized by dragons would be comparable in his eyes and he'd offer up Nel's name by example.
