Gale Reviews: ML Season 5 episode 18 Emotion

(So this is completely far ahead in the order and I will likely revisit this when I am able to see it in order. But if this doesnt deter you from reading this review. Spoilers below)

-Andre is here. And is like "Wait, no drama this time?" Then is happy. I am still mad at you andre, but you are a mood

-I really hoped he was planning on leaving

-WAIT! THEY CONFESSED ALREADY! FUCKING FUCK GLOOB! I WHY WOULD YOU... I... SHIT BALLS DICK HOLE. FUCKING FUCK

-Okay, I am calm. But apparently they havent kissed officially yet

-So Marinette decided to back off on the scheduling thing which is why she doesnt know. Good for her

-Kagami fighting with her mom with kendo swords and then lila shows up...

-Lila... what are you up too. Also Kagami and Adrien are getting introduced as king and queen at this ball which is awkward af because they arent together

-Kagami laughing over Marinette and adrien being together and having fun. She gets some joy out of that.

-I am like 99% sure Kagami is a sentimonster now

-Adrien/Felix really out here slinging massive dick energy. Like kagami is smitten but cant help but feel its off

-Marinette... thats not Adrien! OH NO

-Gabriel heard the name Marinette and IMMEDIATELY knew s*** was going wrong

-Marinette was precious and I cant help but think, Aww she doesnt

-Felix really thought this out. So bascially saying he will thanos the world.

-Ladybug looking for a solution with... NOTHING?!

-Its kind of funny that Kagami is just swinging at him like crazy, and Felix has been acting like a little kid thinking he did good. I feel kind of sad man

-You can be happy without your father adrien. But everything else you said is true

-Felix realizes he done goofed. Its sad he went from evil to adorable. Baby boy.

-Marinette's plan worked. Because Felix wasnt a true villain. Nice

-So Polygami coming back anyone? BRING ON THE THRUPPLE! -"My friend... My sister." Yea Felix is 100% a sentimonster

-Yo... can i give Felix a hug. He needs a hug

-Oh so now you can make ice cream for the 3 of them. Sure Andre. You bastard

-And apparently Lila knows he's monarch apparently?!

So I am missing a LOT of what happened. Thankfully it seems like i can piece together a few things.

Adrien, Kagami and Felix are like 99% likely to be Sentimonsters.

I think I will rate this a 8/10.

I may not like all the revelations that happened. But Felix stole the show and I loved every scene he was in.

But then, the plot thickens, no? What’s going to happen to Grim? In the Ignihyde episode? And those reoccurring memories of us? And our relationship with Tsunotarou lol ALSO WE NEVER REALLY DID FIND OUT WHAT ROOK’S UNIQUE MAGIC IS. DISNEY EXPLAIN—

Maybe I'm also being animal racist, but a current guess I have for oMaM is that the rabbit Sly saw at the docks was actually the newspaper photographer who seems to be spending a lot of energy documenting Sly's movements at this party, and the bad lighting/state of intoxicated introspection led Syl to make a wrong assumption. (Also did you ever watch Hoodwinked? Spoilers: the reporter bunny did it)

lol hey guys. So I've been fairly MIA the past couple of weeks due to my job trying to actively murder me but I wanted to pop in for a hot second to talk about where we are theory-wise at this point in the season.

First of all, to address the actual ask, I feel like Brennan must have known Longfoot would be suspicious due to ~animal racism~ and put him in as a red herring and now we have even more info to back that up.

I suspect that what's going on with the stuff in the manor is a version of the Pepper's ghost illusion which involves mirrors to do ghostly projections and look pretty darn good for an effect that was invented hundreds of years ago. If you've ever ridden Haunted Mansion at Disney, that's the effect they use to do the waltzing ghosts (fun fact, because the effect mirrors the objects it's used on and the Imagineers forgot to take that into account, all of the female ghosts are leading in the dance!) But that's just fluff, let's talk plot.

So last week's ep threw a LOT of suspicion on Sly with him literally being painted at the villain and Grant doing absolutely nothing to defend himself. And, I'll admit, it would be pretty delicious to not only have Sly foreshadow it earlier with his coy, "Why yes, it also could have been me," and also that Grant himself would have [REDACTED] Rekha a SECOND TIME (watch the Murder Mystery ep of Game Changers if you don't know what I mean--it's my fave ep). But I talked it over with my watch buddy @camwritery and I don't think Sly is actually a baddie. I think this is a double double cross (Lol a cross from Mr. Cross). Here's my thought process.

(1) Yes there's that stack of letters Daisy found in Sly's hand but those easily could have been forged. I'd like Buck to take a look at those since he has that rogue handwriting checking ability.

(2) Squire Badger specially said something was coming to F Sly up and Sly could tell he wasn't the mastermind. Fletcher would make the most sense as to who the mastermind actually is. Like, it wouldn't be so much a twist to the audience but it would be a big ass twist to the CHARACTERS who thought he was fully dead (for the most part) and I feel like that matters more than "subverting expectations" or whatever. It's possible we find out it's actually another party guest I guess (or more likely, that some number of them are involved as accomplices) but Brennan said last week we've met all the characters and it's too late to introduce a new person at this point. And Fletcher is such a through line in Sly and Daisy's stories, it would be weird to not go for the payoff.

(3) So Fletcher is alive. We know this. What would a dead but not dead criminal mastermind want? To ruin his arch nemesis, obv. So, how do you do that? Maybe you fake the death of some mouse to create an unsolvable murder to drive him crazy? And then maybe you work with the person who the fake murder pissed off (because of Sly's inability to "solve" it) to ruin Sly because that guy hates Sly now? And maybe you involve some element of faking deaths in your plan because a faked death is what was central to the original plot that made Sly's reputation and ruined your family? That's so convoluted but this is a guy who handcuffed himself to his enemy and jumped off a waterfall. He's clearly a drama queen and he has nothing but time.

(4) I think Sly has figured this out to some degree and he's decided that letting himself get captured is the best option for him at the moment. Like, he didn't protest at all. Which, yes, checks out to his laidback, posh casual persona but I think he knows that if anything happens to anyone while he's locked up then it casts suspicion on someone besides him or it means the "murders" have to stop because no one will kill anyone while he's not active as a possible suspect due to literally not being able to murder anyone. Speaking of--

(5) Yeah, I don't believe these are murders. All those dead bodies from the list? Badgers, corvids, horned animals. That's the badger fam and their spouses. And the one guy we "knew" was dead also doesn't seem to be dead (which Brennan seeded from the start with Conor's widow hearing his voice which seems possible if she lives so close and he was alive this whole time). I guess framing Sly for a full family murder or something was the plan? But that doesn't quite check out because presumably they'd un-die at some point and I feel like they wouldn't want to live under assumed identities in animal Bavaria or something. I know news doesn't travel fast w/o the internet but they're prominent people. News would spread I assume. Maybe the death faking was to make Sly believe he was crazy? Or to believe in ghosts? Messing with a genius's mind is I'm sure one of the worst things you can do. There's also Buck's Frankenstein theory which is a little out there but they were trying crazy stuff with electricity and dead bodies back in the day. Kind of a wild pull but cam sent me this about a Dr. Squires from the same-ish time period shocking someone back to life. It would be wild and now we have some alt explanations for the electricity but gotta explore all options. And this would Constance to call her dad a madman, lol.

(6) Grant/Sly has a lot more info than us with all those maddening redacted texts so it's very likely he has some long game happening we know nothing about. I wondered if he might have known about Fletcher for a while--when Daisy revealed he was alive he was surprised but I don't remember if he was surprised that he was alive or if it was ambiguous and it might just be that he didn't tell her. I assumed he didn't know at all (because I feel like that's what Brennan narrated in episode 1) but I need to go back and check.

(7) At the end of the day, D20 is a show that rewards love and friendship over betrayal and the like. This very much could be the first season with a real betrayal but I'm kinda skeptical. Sly could just be a big faker but he seems genuine to me. Also, what would his motive even be here? This doesn't seem like his style and I don't know why he'd do this.

(8) Lars failed their check on purpose and Ian saw full puppydog earnestness. Sly if you've been a bad guy this whole time and Lars didn't know, bitch I'll kill you

(9) Not really on topic but I want to note, Daisy's find of that second trick portrait makes me thing my theory was correct and there's a third somewhere. I wonder where.

(10) Even less on topic but the "Show Her Your Butt 2: Electric Boogaloo" sequence last week made me spit soda everywhere and I think that should be acknowledged.

Top 6 Kinoverse ships

This is quite an unexpected post from here don’t you think? Well don’t worry, you’re not the only one to think so.

Usually, at least for me, Ships have always been a secondary priority on this blog so I never really put as much focus on them as some others normally would, however, I feel as though they are important enough in their own right, especially when some of the more interesting storylines of certain characters have been built up as a result of the ships that are currently here, or are in deveopment, which makes one better appreciate them overall.

Today, we’re going to be taking a look at 6 of the ships I am fond of, or have been more prominent than some others. Some ships may not have the characters officially together yet, but will lean heavily towards that direction as their story progresses.

6. Rosalia x Bowen ( @tetsuwan-atom )

One of the earliest ships to be made in the Kinoverse, we have a powerful sorceress who can travel to most any place in the Multi-Universe and a guy who pretty much does the same thing for a science based organization. Since Raildex is the main setting for the Kinoverse, I like the fact that we have two people on the opposite ends of the spectrum, (that being Magic and Science) get along so well. Truly, these two embody the phrase, “When Sicence and Magic Cross Paths, a Story is Born!”

Admittedly, my musing for Rose has been low as of late, hence why she doesn’t make that many appearances as much as she used to, and I’m still trying to figure out her own backstory and whatnot, but when she does appear, I truly enjoy the interactions she has with Bowen, and mostly how he reveres her like she’s a queen lol. And who can blame him? She’s got the looks, she has the charisma, (something I wanted to explore a bit in the “Genesis Timeline” but I digress), and she also has a Childish side to her, which comes in the forms of the pranks she pulls on others, mainly Kamijou for some reason. Overall, I hope that there are more interactions between them in the future that is to come! These two are dimension hoppers and lovers, so there’s plenty of things to do as far as spin off stories are concerned!

5. Shido x Sayo ( @crystalmelodies )

This one is another favorite of mine, solely because of how Shido is basically attached to her. When I think about it, Shido has had the most dramatic changes in his character thus far, from being Aogami Pierce 2.0 to becoming someone more rigid, Shido has finally found someone that he genuinely cares for and will do anything to protect, he went through great lengths to save Sayo when she was fated to disappear as an angel and ever since then he’s become protective of her. In some occasions, whenever Sayo is gone for an extended period of time, he goes into worried dad mode/edgy mode and looks all over for her, only to feel totally silly when she returns and is fine, which i hilarious and kind of sad when looking at it more deeply.

Sayo is basically the only person in his life that he has at the moment, and there in lies a fear of, “what if she vanishes again” and that fear of losing her in one way or another is always in the back of his head. It’s also why he’s gone off the deep end as of late with something else that’s influencing him (but we will see how that goes if that becomes a future arc). Overall, their interactions are very wholesome when they do happen and its nice to see both of then happy together. Now we just need Shido to get snapped out of his dark lord phase so we can have more happy moments with theeeemmmmmm!

4. Touma x Lucia (crystalmelodies)

Another ship I am interested in seeing, even though the two have not gotten together, let alone confessed to each other, is Kamijou Touma & Nanami Lucia.

Here we have Kamijou Touma, the guy who has met an untold number of girls in his adventures from all walks of life, as per the “Kami-Yan disease” that his classmates call it, with a girl who seems as ordinary as they come, though in reality that isn’t the case. So what’s noteworthy about this particular pairing?

Well, a few reasons, but mainly its the fact that at first glance, Lucia is an ordinary girl that lives in a quiet seaside town devoid of crazy technology, and Espers that the metropolis known as Academy City has, so I’m quite fond of the idea of “An Average High School Boy You can Find Anywhere” being paired with a person that’s “An Average Girl You can Find Anywhere” that the two seem to represent. Not only that, but they both get along quite well and there has been hints, at least on Kamijou’s end that he has somewhat of an interest in her.

From Kamijou’s point of view, she differs from the other girls that he is antiquated with in the fact that she’s one of the very few people that doesn’t appear to react Violently whenever he gets thrown into a misfortune event. She also differs from the others in the fact that she is a “regular person” whereas the other girls have been everything from Espers, to Magicians, to Saints (Superhuman Magicians), and even Gods themselves, so the fact that he has met someone who not only tolerates his misfortune, but appears to be so far removed from the crazy sides of the world that he’s been constantly thrown into.

of course, we know that Lucia is not an ordinary human; she’s a Mermaid, a Princess, and a Magical Girl? It would be interesting to see how Kamijou reacts to finding out that not only is she all of these, but her circle of friends are as well and related. Overall, even if he found out about that, he wouldn’t see her any differently than he already does - because he would still see her as his friend, even if she were a Goddess. If she was in trouble or sad, he would definitely come running to her side.

On a side note, in the Genesis Timeline, he also showed interest in her Mermaid Persona, something that is also true for the Rebirth Timeline, so it will also be interesting to see how he reacts to finding out that Human Lucia and Mermaid Lucia are the same entity. For the time being though, this will be somewhat of a slow burner as Kamijou plans to wake her up from her coma as well as deal with his internal issues regarding his self worth, the identity crisis he has as a result of the destruction of his memories from Index OT 1, and the PTSD he has from being killed by Othinus to damn near infinity. These two will certainly be in for quite a ride as time goes on.

3. Zarama/Zelreich x Artemis ( @averageisms )

When Zarama was conceived as the primary Antagonist for the second half of the Genesis Timeline, he was originally going to be this power hungry tyrant that saw the universes and everyone within it as his servants, however, as I began to develop him further and better develop his motives, he eventually became a complex character that could be a villain that you can both hate and somewhat sympathize, given the back story that I had originally given him and what he was trying to do overall throughout Genesis Order. He was one of the characters I least expected to become shipped with someone, yet here we are, with it becoming among the top 3 ships I have.

There’s something about this particular pairing that has me coming back to it every time. It’s interesting to see how this powerful being who is so far removed from humanity, has taken an interest in the most human/average person you can find out there, which makes this reminiscent of something you would see in a Disney film or some supernatural drama. In the old timeline, Zarama’s attachment to Artemis mostly comes from the fact that he has been around beings who were so far removed from humanity for eons upon eons, that meeting someone who was normal was a breath of fresh air for him - someone who was uncorrupted by the supernatural and just wanted to have someone to come back home to.

In the rebirth timeline, Zarama is decidedly different as a character overall, as while he is not really a god like he was before, but rather a curious immortal that travels the Multi-Universe to study abstract concepts like The Essence and Bio-Energy as well as various magics. His attachment to her stems from the fact that for ages, he has wanted a companion that would remain at his side, as he knows the pain of isolation that his immortality brings and he feels a similar loneliness inside of her for different reasons. Yet he’s made an oath that he would never abandon her in the same way others have abandoned her.

This iteration of Zarama hasn’t gone down the dark path that his Genesis Timeline counterpart went through and doesn’t have some grand plan to save all of creation. He’s instead more focused on his research as well as just being with Artemis, as he sees her as the one his heart has been seeking for a very long time. Overall, I enjoy the interactions they both have and I can’t wait to see how this pairing further develops.

2. Makoto x Grete ( crystalmelodies )

At number 2, we have one of the more newer pairings in the form of Makoto and Grete.

This one is interesting because of how far we were willing to see Makoto go in order to ensure her happiness and safety. Ever since he saw that vision of her during the first week of their meeting, an attatchment has been formed between them, with Makoto wanting give her the happiness that had been stolen from her. Even though he was a bit caught off guard when she practically confessed to him, Makoto’s feelings for Grete wasnt fully realized until he was taken away to Academy City, where he came to realize that he had indeed developed some sort of feelings for her.

Although it wasn’t written, during Makoto’s final moments in Academy City, we would have seen him face off against Kamijou Touma and how he was willing to become a reprehensible person in order to ensure his future with Grete, which would have been interesting given how Grete is practically similar in that regard. Kamijou would have given him the question of if Grete would really be proud of the things he was doing in her name, asking that would she really be content with smiling by his side, knowing that he had hurt people along the way, which causes his resolve to waver a bit. Makoto would then go onto say that as long as MINUS has their hooks on them, then he had no choice but to be a villain. What would have transpired next would be Kamijou declaring that he will save Makoto from this darkness and return him to Grete’s side, and he would do so by destroying the Illusions that he was holding onto.

After that grueling fist fight, Kamijou would carry Makoto over to Academy City’s warehouse district where he would have Rosalia and her maid take him out the city and return him to the life he was take whisked away from, giving him a new found hope and resolve to being at Grete’s side. Now Makoto has to deal with the aftermath of his disappearance, and that means he will be staying by her side even more and to make sure that he never suddenly vanishes from her life like that again.

I really like this pairing, and I hope to see this develop more and see where it goes, because the story behind it, from his Makoto’s Precognition Ability, to his defeat and salvation at the hands of Kamijou Touma, and the possibility that Makoto and Grete may be long lost childhood friends, as it has been hinted at at least twice before!

1. Accelerator x Violent Violet ( @xbloodsoakedx )

I think we know by now this was obvious. After all, it is the most popular pairing in the Kinoverse so far, and the most active.

Initially, I wasn't that crazy about it due to a myriad of factors, both in-universe and out of universe that had my mind not in the right place, however as time grew I grew to appreciate this pairing and the wildness that comes with it. Accelerator was one of the muses who I least expected to get paired with someone due to his personality, but surprisingly, he and Violet complement each other quite well. You have two of the strongest people in the verse who have gone through some similar things in their past, mainly how they were experimented on to become the powerhouses that they are now today.

Although Accelerator isn’t keen on showing affection most of the time, he definitely cares about her and came to realize just how much she has changed his life, similar to Last Order. He sees her as more than just a lover, he sees her as part of his “family” whether or not he would openly admit such. We see this in how he reacts to Violet vanishing for a week during the Shura Arc and how determined he becomes to save her from the darkness that she was pulled into. You also have the fact that this came after Last Order had been kidnapped herself, so Accelerator at this point is tired of people targeting everyone that was close to him, a development we will see as the story moves forward with his desire of wanting to protect that family of his, be it Last Order, Violet, the two older women who are his “guardians” Worst, and the MISAKA Network Clones.

Something that’s also noticeable in Accelerators casual interactions with Violet is how he can be such a tsundere, in that Violet likes to cuddle and kiss him, yet despite looking displeased, he lets her do what she wants, similar to how he lets Last Order pester him. I think Violet and Last Order are the only ones who can get away with calling Accelerator a Tsundere lol

Ultimately, It’s thanks to this connection she has formed with Accelerator that she has blended into the city of bizarre science so well. Last Order was not initially fond of Violet, believing her to be a bad influence on Accelerator but that quickly changed and is now attached to her as she is to Accelerator, while Worst, Yoshikowa and Yomikowa were genuinely welcoming of her presence for differing reasons, but all can agree that they can tease Accelerator about Violet whenever the moment arises.

In the Genesis Timeline, Violet became a celebrity of sorts in Academy City, and you can expect the same thing to happen in the Rebirth Timeline, with many people taking an interest in her for varying reasons. Overall, this is certainly a pairing you want to keep your eyes on as the story progresses.

That also reminds me, two of the Three heroes are now in relation ships. Hamazura Shiage is with Takitsubo Rikou and Accelerator is with Violet, leaving Touma to have to contend with being single yet also having the world’s largest harem while being totally unaware of it. This can change though...once he wakes up a certain mermaid lol

And there you have it. 6 ships I enjoy in the Kinoverse. There may be others that I missed or neglected to include, but these are the main ones that have been on my mind when it comes to this topic. Will there be more? Possibly in the future, but for now, this is it!

"#people who skipped S7 are fools" YES. I mean, I haven't finished yet, but I always MEANT to. I love the AU world and how different they are, and I even like the new version of these characters!

Anybody who watched OUaT past S2.1 knows it can only be lovingly described as a clusterfuck (and not in the Sense8 way). And season 7 has so many issues, but what’s one more nonsensical timeline of events where everything happens so much. I honestly could not faithfully re-tell what for example happened with Ivy/Drizella. But I enjoyed her scenes, so what?

S7 is different, because well, Snow and Emma are missing and they are this sorta huge part. But sorry, the story of Regina Mills is continued and Lana Parrilla carried this show on her back start to finish and she has so much fun stuff she gets to do. We meet her curse counterpart Roni, the bartender. HALLO!! (Emma isn’t even there and the lesbian energy radiates on.)

Henry’s daughter Lucy is cute as a button and once again Lana gets the best out of the child actress (I know she was the one to fight for Regina and Henry having a better relationship despite the abusive parenting before and I still think that was a good choice and she is really good in scenes with kids and helps their perfomances).

Cinderella and Tiana aren’t used to the best of their capabilities and with the new Cinderella it’s something where this whole endless-realms-with-the-same-stories-but-slightly-different is weird. But hallo, Cinderella is THE OG Disney Princess and she is finally here and pretty cool.

The weirdest bit is that I like Rumple again. I like him as a villain-villain and during the show, well, it was clear why he was kept around, but omg did that make him insufferable (Robert Carlyle is not at fault, he gives it his all and his performance no matter the material is flawless; because of him I wished I cared about Rumple as a conflicted character). Strangely the absence of Belle is doing him favors here. (Which clearly shows that Belle should have had another beast in the first place. Around him she became a glorified sexy lamp, while every of her lady-adventur-meet-ups was exiting.)

And Hook!! I could not care less about S2-6 Hook even if I tried. He is 100% the type of het love interest that is booooooooo~ring. Because the writers said “they are it” and never bothered to really let him be a good supportive boyfriend. Drama only and then kisses. And I could not buy that bs. (And no, this isn’t disgruntled Swan Queen talk, it’s just that Emma deserved someone who didn’t behaved like an asshole everytime she wasn’t looking. The writers didn’t even make him morally grey or interesting, they used him for bs and then “but I love her”. ugh) But S7 Hook?? Wishverse!Hook? HERE FOR IT!!!! I mean, his story revolves around love. But not romantic. It’s all about family. He has a drive and actually tries to be better. And he sacrifices in an honest way. I suddenly enjoyed his scenes!!

This time the gay fairytale is stretched out over multiple episodes like an actual building relationship, hooray! What a nice surprise that was.

After Underbrooke, the absolute waste that was Emma Swan as the Dark One (it was because of Hook and for love??? and halfway through they forgot to explore Emma’s actual darker side, because she wasn’t anywhere near evil all along?? IT WAS ABOUT A MAN AND NOT THE STORY OF THE WOMAN HERSELF??? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY), the nonsense with the Black Fairy, who was Rumple’s mom and while looking fabulous (Jamie Murray always brings her sexy A-game no matter the story, see Fright Night 2 for reference), was a terrible character (Cruella was the best villainous villain after Cora and she was thrown away too soon)... wait where was I? Right, after the suffering that was most of S5+6 (not you The Bear King, sweetie, mommy loves you, you did nothing wrong), season 7 was fun again. The characters were treated better and not bullshit like Arthur or whatever they did with poor background Robin.

Really the only good constant throughout the whole show is Regina’s story. And if the writers cared for a moment of course Snow. They even let Emma down HARD. (S4 with Ingrid was kinda dope and really, that ending with Emma’s name on the dagger, but then... ball dropped. And a whole building on top.)

OUaT is my love-hate obsession. I choose to cling to everything I love about it and imagine a version of the story, where the threats get followed in a satisfying way. I don’t even totally hate how they shoehorned in all the known Disney properties. Having half season arcs with specific guest characters like from Frozen or Brave isn’t a bad concept per se. And I can enjoy camp. But it’s like the writers always fell in love with exactly what I didn’t care about and that makes me so sad. (if you go through all my tags you will end up with a 50k word essay: Ruby Lucas - The missed potential of using the bi werewolf Lady)

For what OUaT was overall, S7 isn’t especially bad or insulting.

January 2020 Picks

And we’re back!!! Been watching a lot of great stuff recently that I’m excited to chat about. These are just a few of highlights. I’m not 100% caught up on the Arrowverse shows yet, but did enjoy the Crisis a lot-especially after the second watch through. SPOILERS AHEAD!!

ANNE WITH AN E

This 3rd season was my FAVORITE so far, which makes it even more depressing that this is the end. I watched it the fastest and even stayed up till 1 AM to finish the series after watching four straight episodes. (Normally I try to space out bingeing stuff because I don’t want it to end so fast.) This series has always taken liberties with the source material to make it even more relevant to today, but I especially felt that during this season. It did not feel forced one bit. From Bash losing Mary and overcoming being a minority in Avonlea to Ka’kwet’s story line that brings me to tears every time I think about it-especially because she made it ALL the way home just to be taken back. Would love to believe she’s back with her parents, but the ending this season doesn’t show it. Perhaps they were thinking about pursuing it more if there was a 4th season. Josie Pye’s assault was a nice commentary on the Me too movement as well as the Human Rights and Women’s Rights march. I’m so happy Matthew survived this series! I was so worried for him. (As readers know he dies at the end of Anne of Green Gables the novel. Most adaptations often keep it in and I am happy we diverted from the original this time.) Jerry and Diana were adorable at the start, but Jerry deserves so much more! (He got SO TALL! As I often remarked while watching this season.) I absolutely loved the boy craziness this season because they were “Now 16!” Tillie balancing two guys! Ruby’s crush on Moody was super cute. I loved when Anne was forced to ask Gilbert about having babies by the girls. THE STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS!! (applause) 1) Mrs. Stacy: as a widower she will not settle for just anyone to marry. 2) Prissy Andrews: I really like that they brought her character back up and that she attended college. So sad that Billy will still be the head of her family. 3) Diana gets to go to Queens (a change from the novel as well, but one that was a great choice). I really liked her chat with Aunt Josephine. 4) Of course Anne Shirley. There’s so much to say about Anne, but one of the things I really liked this season was getting insight into her own personal family history. Seeing her mom’s book at the end was very touching. I love that she also had red hair. Last thoughts: Delphine is the CUTEST BABY EVER! Seriously a fantastic actress. Her relationship with every person in the show was amazing. And of course my beloved Shirbert. I knew they were endgame (because of the source material), but BOY did they take their time getting there). Screw Winnie! Anne and Gilbert’s relationship hurt my heart throughout it all, but so many adorable moments between them proving they are meant to be. Forever my OTP!

SANDITON

I am seriously feeling the period pieces this month (but then again when am I not). As a HUGE Jane Austen fan I was extremely excited when I heard that her unfinished novel, Sanditon, would be adapted for the TV screen. Because I was unfamiliar with the story (which is always a fun time when one of your favorite authors has been dead for the past few hundred years) I made sure to add the novel to the top of my 2020 list. Due to its length I was able to finish it before the series started a few weeks ago. While I was not a huge fan of the unfinished novel, because I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters or see where the story was headed, I already feel differently about the mini-series. By the end of episode 1 I was already hooked and very happy that PBS aired the second episode immediately afterwards. I can see parallels to Austen’s work as well as echoes to other Austen novels (naturally Pride and Prejudice). When listening to the Masterpiece podcast in which they interview Rose Williams (who plays Charlotte Heywood) she described Charlotte as a cross between Elizabeth Bennet and Catherine Morland (from Northanger Abbey), which I think is really accurate. I like how Charlotte goes to Sanditon because of her interest in seeing this place that Tom Parker gets so excited about. She honestly isn’t looking for a husband, but rather an occupation. Something different away from her farm. Is romance involved? You betcha. This is an Austen adaptation afterall. But that is not her main focus. There’s so many other things going on with the story, but I’d have to dedicate a complete other post to explain it all. I really feel it is fitting in well with other classic book to screen adaptations coming out right now like Little Women and Anne with an E. If you’re a fan of either one then Sanditon is worth a try. And of course if you love Jane Austen and the 1995 Andrew Davies adaptation (he’s producing this one as well) then it’s worth a shot!

THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE-SEASON 4

Just like with Anne with an E, I think this was my favorite season of The Man in the High Castle (and ironically also the last season. Although this series knew that going in to production). It held my interest very well and I watched it faster than the previous season. I really don’t think I’ve been this invested since season 1. Lots of new characters were introduced and while I missed some of the old it just shows you how much this show has developed. I also felt myself liking the new characters really fast. At first all of the multi-verse stuff was pretty intense and a little hard to follow, but it got easier as the show went on-EXPECT FOR THE END! Were all those people coming through because their worlds were much worse? What happens next? How are the Smith children? Amy and the other students who were brainwashed-will they change? Kido will stay. Did Childan find Kikuko? (Loved their relationship btw. I’m going to believe they got to be together in the end. It will make me sleep easier.) I was constantly saying to myself: How are they going to wrap this up in only 4 episodes...3...2...etc.. But I feel like it could have been a bit stronger. Despite this I still am a big fan of this season. I just get picky when it comes to series finales.

DOCTOR WHO

Last I had posted about Doctor Who I was very behind. Like I only watched last year’s holiday special this year behind. It was just tough for me to get into last season. I’ve really enjoyed Jodie Whitaker’s take on the Doctor. I feel she brings a new energy, but at the same time reminds me of the way Tennant and Smith portrayed the role. It’s just that I missed some of the familiarity of the show. It’s always hard getting a new Doctor because the show takes on a different feeling, but with all new villains, companions, TARDIS, etc it was tough. I wanted a couple more old references. I also didn’t love all of the episodes (although a bunch of them were really good: Rosa Parks, Demons of the Punjab, Kerblam! to name a few). So when I watched last year’s special at the beginning of the month I felt I zoned out a bit. However, Spyfall (parts 1 & 2) that kicked off this season were entertaining and I’ve been hearing good stuff about this season so far. Now that the show is on its second season with these characters, I’ve heard there’s more of a rhythm. I can’t wait to continue. I also can’t wait to see these guys again:

PLUS I discovered a HUGE spoiler about last week’s episode that honestly that has honestly gotten me so pumped; it is the main reason why I am catching up faster. (I won’t spoil it here if you still don’t know it. I foresee I’ll probably write an article just about that episode.)

VIOLETTA

My guilty pleasure that I have been bingeing on Disney+. This musical telenovela from Buenos Aires has three seasons of 80 episodes a piece! (That’s right I have my work cut out for me.) Currently only the first season is up on Disney+ and the show is pretty hard to find, so I am really hoping that by the time I finish it they release at least the second season. I only started it in the new year and am already on episode 42, so you can say I’m enjoying it... :) Basically once I hit 30 I was hooked. (Although I was enjoying it a lot before that, now I’m just more obsessed.) There are several characters in the show from the students, to the teachers and family members, but the main character is Violetta who has lived in many different countries all her life with her dad who is a very successful businessman. She has been home-schooled forever due to their lifestyle and because of her dad’s worry that she will be hurt in the real world. Her mother was a popular singer who died when Violetta was very little that she barely remembers her. When they move back home she secretly gets enrolled in a music school that her mom just so happened to attend. Her tutor is secretly her aunt (who no one recognizes because Violetta’s dad told her that her mom had no relatives) and she has to hide attending the music school and singing which is her ultimate dream. That’s just the basics because there is so much more drama in the series. Lots of lying, deceit, love triangles that just won’t quit, ridiculousness and music. While they repeat a lot of the same songs, many of them are quite good and really catchy that you can’t help but get them stuck in your head. My sister (who loves this show) kept talking about it and that made me want to watch once we got Disney+ (she was lucky to watch two seasons when it was still on Netflix). As she said to me, you should watch it in the original language, which is Spanish with English subtitles. I feel like I’m learning more Spanish while watching it. Probably be fluent by the end (ha ha ha ha-not really).

21. 10 Characters You’d Like to See

Lmao I was gonna go in order but honestly WHATEVER people started doing this and I wanted to join and everything is crazy rn and I needed a distraction

STARTING WITH WHO I WANT (but also tbh most of these I would just like to see as well do not interpret this as me staking my claim lol)

1. Corey from Onward. I’ve been thinking about her for a while and even wrote an app but other stuff took precedence because I wanted to get in on Pride U stuff. I just love a character who used to be a big star and now... works in an office. I’d have her be a manager at Interpride maybe in accounting or marketing who occasionally makes appearances on DnD podcasts or gives motivational speeches. Just your average semiretired manticore dragon hunter :) And I love Danielle Brooks for her but maybe I’d make her a little older so I’m not sold

2. ROZ. When the skeleton for Roz posted I was like something about this calls to me and Pet said that she thought it would and like idk this is a similar impulse to wanting Corey I just love the idea of an older lady who’s been through some shit and now she just has an office job. Also I’d give her a wife of like 20 years and they would be cranky but v cute. And I mean come on I can never resist joining another ~society~ I’d love to get in on RAS stuff.

I don’t really have a FC idea at the moment I just love her.

3. Evelyn Deavor. Okay she honestly might be my next for real. I’ve been thinking about her since like May but I’ve had other character ideas take precedence and I feel like playing her would require a lot of plotting/planning and when I first came back I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that. But I feel like I am now. And I just love villains who think they’re doing the right thing and I think especially in light of the election and all the magic drama lately she would fit in so WELL I would love to plan a magical disaster that she created and I feel like she would really stir things up in a fun way. And could partner with other villain characters and really get some stuff moving. We’ll see though because I’m not allowing myself to get another character until Thanksgiving I just don’t think I can handle 5 characters at school.

4. Isabella Garcia-Shapiro. Actually the whole Phineas and Ferb Crew Thank You. Okay now we’re getting into the characters I don’t actually think I would play but who I would just REALLY love to see. Isabella because I love her energy and she was so great in the new movie and she’s so cute but also will Fight You and I love teens who want to take over the world just give me more of that energy pls. I just don’t think I have enough ideas for her as a character but here are a few things I would like to see: take advantage of the canon hyphenation of her last name and make her parents queer! Make Fireside Girls a normal Girl Scout Troop by day and amateur mystery-solving girl squad by night! Make her a witch!

I think Ariela Barer would be really cute for her.

5. NAVEEN. PLEASE. Pls give me Naveen as a waiter at Tiana’s Place who gets on her last nerve. Maybe he turns out to be a really good musician and tries to make “singing waiter night” happen that could be funny. Also I just think his skeleton is hilarious now that we have lost our beloved Fflewddur please bring us another narcissistic prince of a foreign land who plays an instrument.

6. Remy, Our Ratatouille, The Rat Of All My Dreams Give me REMY. I know this is partially because of all the time I spent on RatTok but the fact that we have no Ratatouille characters rn is a crime. And I have ideas to incorporate this with Tiana’s Place stuff and I think it would be really fun. Please please please.

7. Sadness from Inside Out. I actually had like half an app written for her and I think there are some cool things that can be done with that character. I would love to see her as someone who got “gifted” (cursed) with magical empathy (feeling people’s feelings by touching them or being near them or something) and that’s why she’s sad all the time-- she’s overwhelmed by people’s feelings. Idk I just thought it would be a cool idea for a character but I didn’t end up having enough muse. But I’d love to see someone run with that idea.

As for FC suggestion my main one is my beautiful amazing former FC for Merryweather Belissa Escobedo she is so cute and she even has GLASSES in the majority of her gifs. She would be perfect.

8. The Boy and the Mom from Bao or the Man and the Woman from Paperman. THE VOLCANOES FROM LAVA. Disney Shorts in General. I noticed that “Disney Shorts” is a category on the main but there are no characters in it. Let’s change that! Disney shorts have very little character development lol but they can be real tearjerkers sometimes (See: the three I named above). And I think it would just be a cool challenge to figure out how to adapt them as characters.

8. Rapunzel or Rupi/Ruby as I would rename her because seriously what kind of name is Rapunzel. That is the main basis for what sparked my interest in her in addition to thinking that Maitreyi Ramakrishnan from Never Have I Ever would be so great for her. And I think she could have some cool plots with the fairies-- maybe someone could pick up Blue Fairy or Merryweather and she could track them down.

9. DARLA. Bring back my crazy queen please. She was so fun and now that I play a mermaid I would love to give the merfolk some more stuff to be scared of. There are so many possibilities with her!! I just don’t really have the muse but someone else could do an amazing job.

10. Tow Mater. Come on, guys. Ladies love him. Everyone loves him. The cars fandom wasn’t built around Lightning McQueen, it was built around Tow Fucking Mater. He would be such a cute country boy. He’ll fix your car. Another character I thought about but abandoned. I could see him and Launchpad being buds. Just imagine the possibilities.

Summary: It’s chemistry again and Adora is missing, leaving Glimmer to wonder where she is. Glimmer has to face Weaver, Cat, and her feelings by herself.

Glimmer’s feet shuffled on the laminate tiles as she dragged herself to fourth period. She could tell by the quickly thinning crowd that the passing period was almost over. She couldn’t bring herself to move faster- or to actually care. She had fallen asleep in her last period and had been forced to scribble down the half an hour of notes she had missed in the last three minutes of class- and then a minute or two of passing after that.

Her mind was a fog and the only lamp that occasionally shone through the dense clouds was a grumble of frustration. Glimmer couldn’t decide if she should blame her sleep deprivation on Ms Weaver or if it was better to somehow twist the situation onto Adora. Her brain suggested the third option of it being her damn fault for being so distracted the whole night and spending so much time on being a drama queen instead of actually doing work.

Glimmer let out a huff as the bell screeched. She glared at the door down the hall, behind which Weaver was almost surely cackling out some Disney villain laugh as she marked Glimmer late.

A large part of her was highly tempted to turn around and spend the entire period lurking in a corner of the art studio. She had dropped off the model that morning (By some miracle, Weaver hadn’t been there) so Adora could still present it and get points for them.

She stopped walking and tapped her fingers against her thigh. It was only a ten foot walk to the class but, god, at what cost?

She was jarred into movement by a security guard speeding past her on a bicycle. He was shouting at the empty hallway- something about, “COME ON PEOPLE, KEEP MOVING,”- as if he were policing Times Square and not just Glimmer as she slouched her way past the empty row of monotonous doors.

Glimmer huffed and sludged forward, pausing to glare at the disappearing guard before wrenching the door open.

“Glimmer you’re-“

“Late, I know,” she grumbled the inevitable end of Weaver’s sentence.

Glimmer could feel Weaver’s raised eyebrow without even looking up.

“Keep doing this and you’ll get-“

“Detention. I know.”

The other students were watching the exchange like they were waiting for a bomb to go off- tick tock tick tock. Glimmer was sure that if it were just her and Weaver, the woman may have actually lost it and begun screaming at her.

She settled into her seat, resolved not to let Weaver bother her today. She was too tired to give a shit.

Weaver paused before conceding to simply shake her head and move towards the middle of the room.

Glimmer hazarded a glance upward only to see Weaver surveying the room with a wicked grin, hands pressed together like a praying mans’; as if she was showing off the wicked red claws of her nails. It made Glimmer sick.

“So class, I have a surprise for you,” Smug, purred, smooth with jagged edges; Weaver reminded Glimmer of obsidian as the woman soaked in the sounds of hopelessness coming from her students, “I’ll be checking your projects today to see what you have done!”

The class groaned in unison and the girl in front of Glimmer began whisper yelling at her partner across the room- as if that could do them any good now. Glimmer would have rolled her eyes if they didn’t feel so heavy.

“I know, it isn’t wonderful?!” Weaver’s shark-toothed grin widened as she acknowledged her doomed class.

Glimmer felt bad for the kids in the room who didn’t have a hyperactive, annoyingly insistent partner who had in on Weaver’s evil plans- so basically everyone else.

Now that Glimmer was thinking about it, she hadn’t seen said ball of energy when she had walked in. She turned and was surprised to see Adora’s seat glaringly empty. Glimmer fought back against the wave of disappointment that hit her. It’s not like this was a completely bad thing- it meant that Glimmer would actually be able to concentrate. And Weaver would be more likely to give Glimmer credit for her work instead of immediately assuming Adora had done all of it. So yeah, it was all good. Except... She said she’d see me at school...

Glimmer internally sighed at her own pathetic foolishness; she was getting way too soft.

She allowed herself another glance back, as if Adora would’ve suddenly appeared there in the three second break between her stares.

Another wave hit her, this time a cascade of apprehension. Adora was not the type to skip class and Glimmer’s mind was quick to fill the fog in her head with worries. What if something happened to her? What if she passed out? What if she passed out because I kept her up all night? What if she got hit by a car? What if I hit her my car?? Wait no... I don’t have a car. But what if she’s trying to avoid me?

Glimmer’s mind slapped its hand down on a proverbial bell- Yep! She’s try to avoid you!

Glimmer could feel the sensation of sickness growing in her stomach and rising to her chest. She wanted to bury her had in her hand as a stupid emotional groan began clawing its way up her vocal cords.

“Hey, Glimmer,” A snarky voice purred above her.

Glimmer growled as she looked up into Cat’s smirk, “What do you want?”

Cat gave an over the top pout, complete with big eyes and crinkled forehead, “Why, I just wanted to make sure you were ok.”

“I’m fine; leave me the hell alone,” Glimmer spat.

“All right, all right. You just looked a little,” Cat waggled her fingers, which only added to the insult of her airy, pretentious voice, “dazed-out there.”

Glimmer was suddenly aware of the movement around her- nearly everyone was already sat down with their partners or were at least taking a seat as she looked around.

“Also, I kinda need that seat,” Cat wrinkled her nose at Glimmer and pointed at the chair she was in.

Glimmer turned her head and to the side to see Cat’s partner Scylar beaming at her. Scy was a tall-ass wrestler with a loud punk style; if Glimmer’s brain was dazed enough to somehow skip over Scy throwing herself in the seat next to her (the girl never did anything without enthusiasm), then Glimmer had to be really out of it.

She stumbled out of her chair to move out of the way, “Oh right... I’ll just- move to the back then, I guess.”

Cat waggled her fingers in a wave as she slipped gracefully into Glimmer’s chair, “See ya later.”

Glimmer blinked at the girl for a second before realizing she had froze again. She took a step back, just trying to remember how to move. See ya later... see ya. See ya.

The words bounced around in her head like the little metal ball in a pinball machine- dink, dink, dink. Every time they hit the walls of her skull, I knew conspiracy dawned upon her. What if she knows that Adora was with me last night? Dink. What if she’s trying to get revenge? Dink. What if she told Adora not to come to class? Dink. What if Cat knows I, well that I, you know, abut, you know, Adora. The thought made a little ding! sound this time before ricocheting back even stronger.

“Uh, Glimmer?” The arch in Weaver’s eyebrow was sharp enough to cut a steak with.

She blinked again, bringing her eyes into focus. She had made her way to the back of the classroom but had failed to actually take a seat. Looking around, the seemingly the entire room had eyes on her. Her face burned and she lowered herself into the nearest seat. Adora’s seat.

Adora should have been there; Glimmer needed Adora to be there. Glimmer felt pathetic in every sense of the word. Only a few days ago, she had wanted to keep as much distance between her and Adora as possible. And now she was useless without her. It was strange and it was wrong and it shouldn’t have been happening but there she was, simmering within herself as the class moved forward without her. She needed the assurance that letting Adora in was the right thing to do, that she hadn’t scared Adora off. She needed the simple hope that Adora didn’t hate her. Why shouldn’t she? You hated her for months; you called her a lair and a fake. Why shouldn’t she hate you?

Glimmer resisted the urge to grumble at herself to shut up. Sometimes her brain really did deserve to be yelled at, though.

The class was moving again, sifting through the maze of chairs to grab their projects. Glimmer followed suit as best as she could to meld into the crowd this time after the embarrassing space-out that had happened only a couple minutes before.

Ok but consider this. Glimmer rolled her eyes internally as her mind began rambling again. What if she does hate you- so what? You thought that she hated you for a long-ass time; why does it matter so much if she actually does now? It honestly might be a good thing. It’ll help you get over that stupid crush.

She kept moving forward, trying to ignore the words floating around in her head but it was so much easier just to argue back. Was she just adding to the noise? Yes. Was it satisfying to tell the devil in her ear that it was an idiot? Oh definitely. Consider this- you’re the one that’s so obsessed with Adora and maybe if you stopped worrying about her for a second, I could find something else for you to yell at me about for no good reason.

It struck Glimmer just how much Adora had taken over her life; she had spent the whole day thinking and worrying about the girl. She was just a crush after all; it was ridiculous. Ok so Glimmer thought she was gorgeous and funny and smart and definitely the weirdest person she had ever met but in the best way possible? It was crazy to get this obsessed. Glimmer took a deep breath as she lifted her model off the counter, resolved to relax and go about this whole situation like a “normal” person. One problem. She had never crushed this hard on someone before. She had no idea how to act.

She settled back into her seat- Yes, it was her seat; Adora wasn’t here right now and that meant her seat rights were revoked. Glimmer snorted at her sleep-deprived mind as it continued to crack into smaller and increasingly hysterical pieces.

Glancing around, it was clear that the rest of the room was occupied. Weaver was stalking from partner to partner, leering over each of her victims with the sadistic joy that only a high school science teacher could possibly possess. The groups that weren’t being judged were either trying to throw together styrofoam balls or were praying. Glimmer was pretty sure that neither of those would help at that point.

Glimmer decided to take advantage of the surrounding chaos and grabbed her phone from the pocket of her backpack. She opened her conversation to Bow, ready to dump all her problems in her messages and hope she wasn’t blowing up his phone in middle of a test. Oh well, that’s a problem she could deal with later-

Hey hey hey. Ok so I’ve a problem

Well more like a question. But it’s questions about a problem

Glimmer moved a hand over her mouth to muffle the giggles that were escaping. Bow’s dramatics always made her laugh and she happened to be uncharacteristically bashful about this certain topic.

So I kinda have a big fat crush

The giggles disappeared very suddenly and Glimmer dug her teeth into her bottom lip as she watched the little blinking dots march in their message bubble, waiting for Bow’s response. Fortunately, he didn’t take long to reply. Unfortunately, Glimmer didn’t quite like his answer.

Is it Adora?

Look no one hates someone for no reason as much as you hated adora UNLESS you actually love them

Ok so Bow had a point and maybe he was right and she should have realized it earlier, but “love” was taking it several steps too far.

Glimmer very nearly put her phone away with a huff before remembering that she accidentally had a reason for texting Bow to begin with.

Shut up, anyways do you know where Adora is?

Ooo you missing your girlfriend?

Glimmer’s face would burned red even if Bow hadn’t taken the low dig and called Adora her girlfriend. Because that was the dream, right? Because that’s exactly what she wanted but what she could never have. Because Bow didn’t know the ache in her chest, the pain he was causing. Because he was her best friend so he should know what was going on and how much everything had changed. Because she just wanted to tell him everything and ask him what the hell she should do, but there was something keeping her from telling him and maybe if she could just ask for help, she would know how to solve all her problems. And because yes, she missed Adora and the feeling was so much stronger than it should’ve been.

She glanced around herself, positive that someone had seen her face glowing as bright as a stop light. Everyone was preoccupied with their various crises, leaving Glimmer to her own in peace. Unfortunately Weaver was only two rows away and was drawing closer and closer to where Glimmer sat slumped. She would have to finish up her conversation quickly then.

I’m just wondering why she isn’t in class ok? Nothing more

Glimmer let a puff of air escape slowly from her nose as she zipped her phone into its pocket. Her head felt like a bag of bricks tied to the end of her neck, her eyes just as heavy. She was slumped severely in the chair, so low that her shoulder blades were pressing into the middle of the seat and if she scooted forward a couple more inches, she’d probably slip off entirely; the idea of how much her mother would disapprove of her posture almost drew a laugh from Glimmer.

She debated whether or not it was worth it was worth it to fall asleep. Weaver would be standing over her, glaring with disgust in only two minutes or so, and she would therefore be risking whatever humiliation that would come with Weaver’s disgust. But, mmmm, two minutes of sleep? That might be worth it.

Glimmer was just shifting to plant her head on the desk when the classroom door exploded open. In the doorway stood a slightly sweaty Adora beaming, as always, as if she herself were the sun.

All eyes flickered over to her simultaneously, staring with confused and maybe amused expressions. Adora just grinned wider, apparently in response, “Hey everyone!”

Weaver stood up straight, freezing to look Adora up and down. She seemed confused as to what to do next. The girl continued to stand in the doorway for a moment, seemingly completely comfortable in the situation. The edges of her ponytail were frayed with baby hairs sticking up at odd angles that framed her reddened face. Her breathing was heavier than usual and the blades of glass plastered up her legs combined to give the impression that she had come directly from running.

Adora strode forward, “Sorry I was late! Soccer event with all the captains!”

So Cat did know where she was.

“Oh, I guess that’s ok then,” Weaver unfroze but still seemed somewhat unsure as she turned back to what she had been doing before Adora had burst in.

Adora made her way to the back, stopping only to give Cat a small wave, and sat down next to Glimmer. Her eyes were sparkling and the only signs of any sort of sleep deprivation were the dark circles that contrasted sharply with her pale skin tone. Her energy level was no reflection the amount of sleep Glimmer knew she hadn’t gotten

“Hi!”

“...hi?” Glimmer really wasn’t sure what she was supposed to say. That was usual. What was unusual was that Adora seemed to be expecting her to say something.

Adora was sitting next to her and just a minute ago, Glimmer would have sworn that’s exactly what she wanted but now she had doubts. Adora was just so loud. Her energy made white noise roar in Glimmer’s head and her voice thundered in the empty space between Glimmer’s thoughts. And her smile, god her smile, it was the brightest thing Glimmer had seen all day and it made her eye smart; it felt like a hand had gripped the bottom of her heart and was pulling it down, stretching out of shape and digging crescent nail marks into the flesh. That smile was all that she wanted and all that couldn’t live up to.

Adora cocked her head to the side and let the smile drop slightly, looking more like a puppy than ever, “Is something wrong?”

Glimmer shook her head and took the easy option, “Nah I’m just tired.”

“Oh ok,” Adora seemed to debate on something for a second before regaining her grin, “Me too honestly.”

It managed to draw a snort from Glimmer, “Really? I could not tell by the way you came bouncing in here.”

“I had like, way too much sugar. Anyways, what’s going on?” She turned her head from side to side to look around the room and causing her long ponytail to whip in either direction with the momentum.

Glimmer sat up from where she had ducked down to avoid Adora’s weaponized hair, “You were right. Weaver’s going around checking all our projects.”

Adora pumped her fist, moving her elbow towards her body and dramatically sweeping her head forward, eyes closed, as she did. It was undeniably dorky and it was undeniably cute.

“And our project is great,” Adora stared down at the pile of wire and clay that was beginning to look to Glimmer more and more like some strange “aesthetic” torture tool used by a Pinterest girl the 15th century. Of course, Adora was looking at it with the same starry-eyed expression that she always wore when looking at Glimmer’s art.

Glimmer shrugged, “It’s ok, I guess.”

Adora feigned offense, “Excuse me, I put my heart and soul into that clay.”

Glimmer couldn’t help but break down into giggles. She was so tired and Adora was so dumb and Glimmer couldn’t exactly explain why but every joke Adora cracked became the funniest thing she had ever heard.

Adora grinned back at her, “But really, you should give yourself more credit. It turned out great and I know that it’s not thanks to me.”

Ugh, of course she had to go and make it all “wholesome.” Glimmer debated if it was worth it to say something back. It would be so much easier just to brush it off; so much safer. She had already crossed too many lines last night, the only solution was to go back to normal today. But she couldn’t even remember what normal was.

Glimmer glanced down at her hands. She had been unconsciously worrying at her nails and now her cuticles were beginning to turn red. She looked back up at Adora, “Look though... I wouldn’t have been able to get it done without you and I’m actually really glad you insisted on coming over.”

Adora smiled with the brightness and warmth of the sun, “I am too.”

Glimmer was in the process of absolutely melting under Adora’s affections when Weaver stalked to a halt in front of them, effectively freezing her back together, “So, Adora how did it turn out?”

Glimmer turned to Adora, watching her eyebrows scrunch together as confusion slowly drew across her face, “Well Glimmer did most of the work...”

Glimmer was beginning to wonder if this ‘innocent curiosity’ was something Adora put on just for Weaver. She wasn’t stupid, she certainly didn’t actually like Weaver and she had to know that there was something going on between her and Glimmer.

“...so why don’t you talk to her about it?”

The end of Adora’s sentence snapped Glimmer sputtering out of her thoughts, “Wait what? No, sorry?”

Weaver pivoted on her heels to face Glimmer, “Well then, what do you have to say?”

Glimmer glanced at Adora with wide eyes trying to convey the message of What the hell? Why would you do this??

Adora gave an encouraging smile and nodded. Very helpful.

“Um well,” Glimmer dragged her eyes from Adora (who was still giving that somewhat infuriating smile) to Weaver, “It’s a model of bismuth. The particles or painted to look like a sample of bismuth. That’s about it.”

“Very well then,” Weaver sniffed and began leering over the mess of purples and grays.

Glimmer could have sworn Weaver hadn’t been that critically focused on other groups but, then again, she hadn’t really paid much attention to what Weaver had been doing until moments ago.

Weaver continued to glare over the project as Glimmer continued to hold her breath. After far too long, Weaver moved away with nothing more than a “humph.”

As the click click of Weaver’s heels moved to the other side of the room, Glimmer deflated into her normal slump, “I swear she hates me.”

Adora squinted in the direction of their teacher, “I still don’t see why she’s such a bitch to you.”

Glimmer’s eyebrows shot up without her consultation, “I was not expecting you to say anything that... strong.”

Adora shrugged without giving a response, still grimacing towards Weaver- whatever that meant. If it meant anything at all. Maybe it didn’t. Maybe Glimmer was just taking a simple stare to mean way too much. After all, Adora was sleep deprived and apparently coming down from a sugar high. It would make perfect sense for her to space out. So that settled it; Glimmer was reading into too much, that’s all-

“I swear one of these days she’s going to say something shitty to you, and I’m just going to lose it.”

Oh. Glimmer could feel her heart rate spike like it was trying to reach the sky. That sounded nice, that sounded like maybe- just maybe- Glimmer wasn’t reading into it too much. It sounded almost protective and normally that would make Glimmer gag, but somehow this wasn’t normal.

But of course her only reply was to let out a nervous wheeze, “Why on Earth would you do that??”

Adora shrugged again, “I don’t like the way she treats you.”

Glimmer didn’t like the strength in Adora’s eyes. It wasn’t the level of contempt that led to bloodshed, but it was certainly more emotion than Glimmer deserved or would ever ask for. It made her uncomfortable; she didn’t understand why Adora would be so angry about something which, in the long run, probably wouldn’t matter.

She gave another awkward giggle, “It really isn’t a big deal.”

Adora opened her mouth to respond and Glimmer was almost grateful when Weaver began speaking from in front of her desk. Something seemed to switch off in Adora, her expression relaxing as she turned to face the front of the room.

“I can’t say I’m surprised but a lot of you really need to get to work,” Weaver hissed out a tsk noise between her teeth, “You only have a few days left to get this project done. You have about fifteen minutes left in this period and I expect you all to be focused that entire time. All right get to work.”

The class dissolved into noise as chairs were scrapped across the floor and notebooks were grabbed with the fevered terror that can only be inspired by a looming due date.

Adora reached across the desk to open one of the class-set laptops. She brought up the presentation she had been working on yesterday, the same pastel rainbows and soft pink theme. It sparked a strange sort of déjà vu in Glimmer, the exact same situation as yesterday but with so much less hostility. The dissonance was enough to make her head spin, but she couldn’t help but enjoy the difference.

Adora turned her head, mirth poorly concealed in her smirk, “Can I help you?”

Glimmer blinked quickly, suddenly aware that she had spaced out staring at at Adora, “Oh, um, sorry, no. I was just- no I’m fine.”

“You sure?” Adora was very obviously struggling to keep her smirk from dissolving into a full smile. People talk a lot about feeling butterflies in their stomachs but to Glimmer it felt more like a hundred tiny grasshoppers jumping out of time with one another.

She swallowed but her mouth had gone dry and she wasn’t sure when that happened. She tried to piece together a sentence that a normal human would say, “Yeah, um, I’m good. But what about you? Ya know, do you need help with the project or, uh, something?”

Adora seemed to pause for a moment, once again having to switch to a different setting. She looked almost disappointed and Glimmer still didn’t have any idea what was going on.

Then Adora’s face did something else Glimmer was not at all expecting. Her expression lost all of the playful cockiness it had held only a second before, shifting into what Glimmer could only describe as timid- maybe even embarrassed, “Um, yeah, actually. Could you draw some more things for me to use in the presentation?”

Glimmer didn’t understand Adora’s apparent discomfort. She flipped open a sketch book and grabbed a pencil, “Sure; what do you need?”

“Just another a sketch of it unprocessed or something like that would be great!”

Glimmer was beginning to learn that Adora’s stupid sunshine smile was somehow even warmer when you knew you were the one that had caused it.

The next few minutes went by quickly. They sat mostly in silence, both content in their own work. Sometimes Glimmer would glance over, catching Adora staring at what she had been drawing. Every time she did, Adora would give her a tiny sheepish grin before ducking her head away. Every time she did, something unfamiliarly soft would fill her up from her toes to her cheeks that she could tell were turning pink.

When the bell rang, Glimmer argued that the main reason she didn’t want to move was because she was just too tired, but she could tell it was a flimsy excuse of a lie and she hardly even cared.

Adora stood up, looking down once she had grabbed her backpack, “See ya!”

Glimmer sighed as she watched Adora bounce away from her. See ya.

Part 2 of Guess Who’s Back

Just finishing other requests up Disclaimer - I do not own any of Descendants’ characters and/or ideas all credit goes to the creator and producers of Disney Descendants • Pairing - Harry Hook x Reader (she/her) Descendant of - Dr. Facilier Summary – After their encounter with Harry Hook, (Y/N) and the other Villain Kids make a plan to get Ben back and find a way to bring Harry back with them Warning(s) - sword fighting, injury, blood, near drowning, throwing up, swearing (?)

“Are you sure you’ve got this, (Y/N)?” Mal asked, all eyes shifting to the girl who stood outside of the tunnel leading to the docks. Her eyes glanced down the metal, the smell of sea water and fish overpowering her senses as she took in a deep breath before speaking.

“I’m sure. I’ll use my magic to protect you guys, stay out of the way as much as possible.”

“Remember you’re a target.” Jay spoke up, the concern for the girl in his eyes - all their eyes - was undeniable, “Uma knows how much you mean to Harry. I don’t know her well but I don’t think she’s going let you go easy if she gets her hands on you.”

“That’s an understatement.” The girl’s laugh was more scoffed than anything, “But you guys do remember I have friends on the other side, right?”

“Do you really though?” Dude, who had managed to sneak onto the limo back to the Isle, questioned the girl. She glared at the dog.

“Dude.” Carlos gave his dog a disappointed look, “What part of just because can talk doesn’t mean you should did you not get?”

“Take this sword just in case.” Lonnie, who also decided to come to the Isle despite the protest of the others, handed he girl a sword from her pack, ”You can fight, right?”

“I can.” (Y/N) gave a short smile as she took the sword from her friend’s hands. Memories of being taught how to sword fight by Harry rushing to the forefront of her mind.

“Are you guys ready?” Mal asked, nervousness written across her features. Everyone nodded, the same sense of nervousness flooding their veins.

Mal went first through the tunnel, the rest following. (Y/N) was last though, as she reemerged on the other side, she snuck around the wooden docks until she was just above the furthest dock that led directly along the ship’s edge. The only way she would be seen is if someone were to look up and over at her. Her sword now leaning against one of the rotting posts as she leaned on the railing, watching like a hawk from above.

Since the girl was such a large target for Uma, the group decided it was best for her to stay as far away as she could. Although she didn’t like the idea of being pulled out of the action, she compromised on using her abilities to protect those fighting.

The two sides went back and forth with threats and arguments before Mal and Uma met in the middle of the dock leading to the ship. In Mal’s hand was the fake wand that Carlos and Jay 3D printed for them.

“Hold up.” Uma stopped Mal who held out the wand, “Too easy. Why don’t you give it a test drive? We want to see it work.”

(Y/N) could see as Carlos and Evie who stood at the entrance on the dock side, exchanged looks and hushed words. (Y/N)’s jaw clenched tightly as she watched the scene, hoping some sort of Deus Ex Machina would save them.

“You always were quite the drama queen.” Mal scoffed. Movement out of the corner of (Y/N)’s eyes drew her attention to where they came out of, Dude the Dog, who didn’t listen to Carlos once again, was now sitting himself just above them. There it was, their saving grace.

“Oh, and nothing too big or Ben is fish bait.” Uma threatened the purple haired girl. A lot of the pirates cheered and laughed at their captain's words. Harry held the back of Ben’s jacket as he held the future King closer to the edge of the plank.

“Mal. Dude’s to your right.” (Y/N) whispered to the shadows the delivered the messaged quietly into the future queen’s ear. She watched as Mal’s head ticked to look at her but stopped in realizing that would give her hiding spot away. Mal thankfully understood what she was implying. She turned on her heel and went to the railing, facing Dude.

“Although it seems absurd, turn your bark into a word.” Mal faked a spell, waving the wand around for show. Their breathes were held as they waited for the dog, the ones who knew the truth silently begged with the animal to actually listen.

“Does this vest make me look fat?” Dude finally spoke after a long moment. The laughter roared of the pirates as the dog continued, “Hey, does anyone have some bacon? Cookies?”

“Give me the wand!” Uma demanded with her booming tone.

“Give me Ben!” Mal’s tone similar to the pirate captain's.

A tense moment was shared between the two. Uma was the one to break it as she laughed before turning to her second in command, “Harry. Bring him over.”

The hook-handed pirate listened, dragging a still tied and clumsy Ben over to the bridge that connected the ship and the dock. Gil was telling him something that his father wanted Ben to tell his parents on the walk over before Harry shoved the king to his knees besides Uma. Harry, with a free hand now, pulled out his sword in a threatening manner. Both of the girls held out their hands, waiting for the other to hand over what they wanted.

Once again, Uma was the one to break the tense moment, “Harry, cut him loose.”

“I never get to have any fun.” Harry groaned as he listened to her, dramatically cutting the ropes with his sword.

“Harry, be safe.” The girl whispered to what she thought was herself as the pirates exclaimed in happiness as Uma returned to them, wand in hand. She knew hell was going to break loose the second Uma realized the wand was a decoy and held no magic. Unknowing to her, the shadows carried the message to the pirate, who looked around shocked at the words spoken directly in his ear, his eyes looking for her and landing on her in her hiding place. Confusion written across his features as Uma attempted to use the wand besides him.

“By the power of the sea, tear it down and set us free!”

Nothing happened. That’s when the realization came across Harry’s face, she knew a fight was about to break out and was warning him.

Uma broke the wand over her knee, eyes locked onto Mal who was pushing Ben aside, “You do not get to win every time!”

Pure chaos had broken out as fights began. A majority of the pirates made their way across the water to the docks. Innocence bystanders ran away with some of their belongings in their hands ran from the clinking of swords.

“You can do this.” (Y/N) whispered the words of encouragement to herself. She focused all her energy on her abilities that hadn’t been used in months. Her concerntration proved worth it as the heat emitted from the markings on her forearms as they were outlined and glowed in a deep reddish purple color. The same color came from her palms as she opened them. The mist followed its own path towards the people (Y/N) had in mind, Evie and Ben, as they were the closest to her. The mist lingered around their feet as it rose to the pirates before them, disorienting them as they clumsily and slowly swung at the two dressed in blue. Her concentration was too focused as she couldn’t even hear as another pirate climbed up to her not-so-great hiding place, it was only when the accented voice of Harry called out to her that she broke.

“(Y/N)! Behind you!” The words were suddenly accompanied by a shadow gripping her forearm and whipping her around to come face to face with a sword being swung down on her.

Without hesitation, the girl used her abilities to stop the sword in its tracks. Her disorienting mist disappearing from around Evie and Ben as she couldn’t focus on it any longer. As the pirate, who was easily twice the girl’s size, forced his weight down on the sword and forced the girl down to one knee. As the pressure got stronger, (Y/N) found the strength to push the sword aside, making the pirate, who she now somewhat recognized and recalled his name as Oliver, stumble and fall forward. It gave the girl enough time to escape, scrambling to her sword and dropping to the deck below the platform.

When she turned back, Oliver had jumped down as well and was raising his sword once again. (Y/N) didn’t hesitate, fighting back immediately. The clanking of swords was loud and fast. Suddenly, he got the upper hand, his force strong as they came to a standstill, toe-to-toe, swords meeting at the hilt.

Out of desperation, (Y/N) grabbed the blade of his sword, the pain and blood a mere inconvenience as she tried to force Oliver back. She felt her eyes switch to a glowing deep purple as anger flooded her veins. It only seemed to startle the man for a moment before he smirked, the look confused the girl only for a moment before it made sense. Two pairs of hands grabbed her in a bruising grip around her biceps, forcing her to drop her sword.

“Let me go!” She yelled out, kicking and struggling, “You know me!”

“You’re nothing but a traitor.” Oliver hissed out before punching her with all his might. The pain exploding across her cheekbone and throughout her eye and nose. It was disorienting.

“Oh Uma.” The girl made out the sing-song tone of Quella, who held her right arm, “What shall we do with her now?”

“Harry!” Uma’s booming voice drew his attention away from his fight with Jay, the two immediately stopping as they took in the scene occurring in front of them.

“This is what you get for loving a traitor.” She smirked, her eyes never leaving Harry’s as she commanded her crew, “Throw her overboard!”

“No! Wait!” (Y/N) tried protesting, Oliver grabbed onto her kicking legs as the three took the girl the few steps towards the edge of the ship, not hesitating to toss the girl up and over the ship.

(Y/N) screamed the only thing that came to her mind, “Harry!”

“(Y/N)!” Several voices yell out in response as she made contact with the water. She tried to swim to the surface but it happened just as another wave came through, knocking her back under the water and spinning her around. The surface was lost to the girl, her lungs began to scream at her for air as she panicked to find the surface. Her mind began to spin as her body slowly gave into the darkness that was enveloping her.

At the right time, Harry, after having severely injured the three that threw the girl overboard, jumped in and was able to grab the girl. With ease, he swam towards the surface, towards the entrance of the dock.

“Hand her to us!” Evie called to the soaking wet pirate, (Y/N) limp in his left arm. Harry didn’t hesitate, with his free hand he grabbed the dock before using his strength to pull (Y/N) upwards. Evie and Carlos, who knelt besides her, grabbed onto the girl’s arm and pulled her up onto dry land.

“Here.” A hand reached out to Harry who was pulling himself up now. When the pirate looked up, it was Ben. The two shared a look of understanding as Harry took his hand and was helped onto the dock, “I grabbed this for you.”

Ben unhooked something from his belt loop and showed it to the pirate, it was his hook. Harry looked at him in confusion as he grabbed it from him, “I know how much you mean to her and I see it in the way you look at her. Come back with us.”

Harry didn’t speak, he only nodded his head in agreement. The last few months without the love of his life were the hardest he’s ever experience and this was their chance to get everything they talked about.

“This isn’t over!” Uma yelled out as Mal was running away from her.

“We gotta go now.” Carlos said as they began to head to the exit. Harry picked up (Y/N) with ease, running with her as he could towards the tunnel.

The loud splash of the bridge hitting the sea felt like a million miles away as Harry came out the other side, immediately setting the unconscious girl on the hard ground. He put one hand at the nape of her neck as he took in her ghoulish appearance. Face had none of its gorgeous color, lips blue, hair soaking, and blood from her hand wound sinking into the cement below her.

“C’mon, doll.” His voice was quiet, the eyes on the two had tears filling their eyes as the girl didn’t move for a moment, “You’ve been through so much worse, please come back to me.”

A long, dread filled moment passed before the girl suddenly woke and turned to the side, throwing up all the water within her. Her coughs were loud and painful.

When she stopped, she turned back, meeting Harry’s relieved expression, “Harry.”

"(Y/N).” He whispered back, pulling the girl into a tight hug. The world felt like it was only them in that moment.

“I hate to break this up but we’ve gotta go.” Jay was the one to break the moment. The couple understood, Harry helping her to her feet as everyone got into the car. Harry and (Y/N) the last two.

The pirate didn’t hesitate to pull the girl to him, hand back on the base of her neck as they were relieved to be in one another’s arms.

“You’re coming with us?” She asked, the realization suddenly settling in her. Harry only nodded his head before pressing a messy but loving kiss to her lips. They could feel eyes on them, but they couldn’t bring themselves to care at all, they were all that mattered.

When they separated, Harry whipped her cheek of the stray happy tear that was falling. His voice just above a whisper. “It’s our turn to get our happy ever after, darling.”

“It is.” She smiled back at him, her right hand coming up to hold onto his wrist. That’s when his eyes caught glimpse of the ring wrapped around her finger, the one he gave her the night before she left for Auradon. It seemed like a lifetime ago now.

“You still wear it?”

“I’ve never taken it off.” Her voice was still hoarse, he kissed her forehead mumbling an I love you to her.

“I love you more, Harry.” She looked up to him as he pulled back.

"Not possible, my Queen.”

“You know I am royalty on my grandmother’s side.” She let out a small laugh as she mocked her father’s words.

“I know you are.” He laughed back. The two locked in a kiss once again as they crossed the bridge to their future.

25 best TV shows of the year, from ‘Fleabag’ to ‘Pose’

After 2019, TV will never be the same.

This year, TV got bigger than we ever could have imagined back when there were only three channels. Over 500 scripted series premiered new episodes, two major new streaming services (Apple TV+ and Disney+) debuted, “Star Wars” and Meryl Streep came to TV and “Game of Thrones” ended with massive ratings but disappointed fans. And yet we still are mostly talking about where we’ll be able to easily access reruns of “Friends.”

But there were some really fantastic TV series we hope some of you managed to watch between all the Twitter reactions and marathons of Disney animated movies. And spoiler alert: “Thrones” and its terrible ending didn’t make the cut.

You still have plenty of time before New Year’s Day to catch up on USA TODAY’s top 25 series of 2019.

25. ‘You’ (Netflix)

The soapy thriller starring Penn Badgley was a pleasant surprise in its original home on Lifetime, and became a sensation once it moved to Netflix, which will stream its second season Dec. 26. The second outing with self-aggrandizing stalker (and murderer) Joe is just as addictive as the first, if a little repetitive. But of all the current series that traffic in bad men doing bad things, “You” remains one of the few that asks interesting questions about its bad guy.

24. ‘Evil’ (CBS)

Akin to “The X-Files” for religion – in which a psychologist, a priest-in-training and a tech expert investigate claims of miracles and demonic possessions – “Evil” is a hard sell on paper, but a surprisingly coherent and gripping series. Created by Robert and Michelle King (“The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight”), it is thought-provoking as an investigation of organized, institutional religion and as a source of thrilling horror stories about exorcisms and evildoers.

23. ‘Living With Yourself’ (Netflix)

Paul Rudd is one of Hollywood’s most charming (and ageless) actors, and he does welcome double duty in this dark comedy about a man who ends up with a clone that is significantly better at living his life. Full of existential angst and pratfalls, the series neatly balances comedy and drama. It’s also a great showcase for Irish actress Aisling Bea, who turns in a breakout performance that isn’t overshadowed by Rudd’s star power.

22. ‘Country Music’ (PBS)

Ken Burns rarely disappoints. The legendary filmmaker turned his lens on the history of a uniquely American music genre for this 18-part documentary that traced its roots and rise. It may have also changed some minds about what country music really is and who it is for.

21. ‘Stranger Things’ (Netflix)

After a disappointing and derivative second season, the ’80s-set supernatural series – Netflix’s most popular – returned with new episodes that took more risks and repeated fewer plot points. With the Soviets as new villains, new horror inspirations for the monsters and new relationships to explore – particularly the friendship between Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Max (Sadie Sink) – the series crafted a third season that was almost as captivating as its breakout first.

20. ‘Veronica Mars’ (Hulu)

In our current nostalgia-obsessed TV era, there are plenty of truly terrible reboots, remakes and revivals (“Fuller House”), but sometimes bringing back the original cast and creators years or even decades later results in good TV. The most successful attempt in recent years is “Veronica Mars,” the cult neo-noir series canceled by CW in 2003, revived in 2014 for a movie and brought back yet again for eight episodes by Hulu. Kristen Bell and creator Rob Thomas found a mystery worth Veronica’s talents, and room for the beloved-but-damaged detective to grow. Its shocker ending divided fans, but nothing about the new “Mars” felt cheap, forced or dated, and that’s a true achievement.

19. ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ (HBO)

If you missed this small but mighty new sketch comedy series in August, it’s worth catching up on all six episodes of the hilarious first season. Created by Robin Thede and produced by Issa Rae (“Insecure”), the series’ talented black women comedians excel in sketches that are unique to their experiences and universal in their humor.

18. ‘Pose’ (FX)

FX’s groundbreaking LGBTQ drama became bigger and more intimate in its excellent second season, homing in on its best characters while making its stories more ambitious, tragic and complex. The season was more focused and compelling than its promising first year, with especially strong performances from Emmy-winning Billy Porter as Pray Tell, Mj Rodriguez as Blanca and Indya Moore as Angel.

17. ‘Stumptown’ (ABC)

There is nothing particularly revolutionary about this procedural drama starring Cobie Smulders, but it stands out among the new network offerings this year because of the thoughtful and fresh way the writers make age-old detective stories. Smulders shines as Dex Parios, a deeply caring if not always smooth private investigator, and her performance elevates “Stumptown” beyond just-another-network-cop-show.

16. ‘The Good Fight’ (CBS All Access)

Despite getting a little more fantastical every year, CBS All Access’ “Good Wife” spinoff is still the drama that best captures the current sociopolitical era. Its third season, with the addition of Michael Sheen as a Roy Cohn-inspired lawyer, was a little wacky without getting too weird, with smart scripts and great performances, most notably from Christine Baranski and Audra MacDonald.

15. ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ (Netflix)

This prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film manages to go above and beyond the beloved original. On aesthetics alone, the series is a huge achievement, but it also tells a fantasy story as lofty and politically complex as “Game of Thrones.” That “Crystal” manages to make fully-realized characters and plots through mesmerizing puppetry rounds out a superb epic.

14. ‘The Crown’ (Netflix)

God save the Queen, whoever happens to be playing her. Netflix’s British royals drama proved it can go deep into the reign of Queen Elizabeth II by successfully swapping its original cast for an older set of actors, including Oscar winner Olivia Colman in the lead role (previously played by Emmy winner Claire Foy). The third season has a few bumps, and struggles to make Elizabeth the center of her own story, but the addition of a young Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) and his romantic escapades makes up for Colman’s brief screen time.

13. ‘Superstore’ (NBC)

Like a cheap bottle of wine at Target, “Superstore” just gets better with age. NBC’s workplace comedy is smarter and funnier every season, and 2019 episodes represent the show at its peak. “Superstore” kept its stories and character dynamics fresh this year by promoting Amy (America Ferrera) to manager of the Cloud 9 big box store, changing her socioeconomic status in an instant and drastically altering her relationship with her co-workers, including boyfriend Jonah (Ben Feldman).

12. ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ (FX)

Based on the cult 2014 film from Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) and Taika Waititi (who directed “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Jojo Rabbit”), “Shadows” is the funniest show this year, an outright bacchanalia of vampiric failures, energy draining and nerdy virgins. The comedy moves its focus from hapless vampires in New Zealand to an even more inept clan in Staten Island, New York, with lofty goals such as taking over the world via city council meetings.

11. ‘The Good Place’ (NBC)

The philosophical afterlife comedy hasn’t been quite as brilliant in its fourth and final season, but even at 85% strength, “Good Place” is still smarter and funnier than most shows on TV. Nailing an ending to a series that asks questions as big as this one does (what does it take to be a good person?) is always tricky, and most crucially the series is staying true to its delightful characters.

10. ‘Shrill’ (Hulu)

At last, “Saturday Night Live” standout Aidy Bryant has a starring role worthy of her talents in Hulu’s “Shrill.” The actress finds a quieter side of her comedy in this Portland, Oregon-set series based on writer and fat-acceptance activist Lindy West’s memoir. It marks the best portrayal of life as a plus-size woman on TV, neither patronizing nor unrealistic, and tells stories beyond its protagonist’s weight on a scale. With just six hilarious episodes, it’s one of the few TV series that would have excelled if it had expanded.

9. ‘Unbelievable’ (Netflix)

True-crime stories can be many things: seedy, enthralling, vindicating, angering or satisfying. Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning ProPublica article, “Unbelievable” is both infuriating and triumphant, highlighting the deep flaws in our criminal justice system while also celebrating the work of two genuinely heroic policewomen. With a stellar cast, “Unbelievable” tells the story of a rape victim (Kaitlyn Dever) who isn’t believed by police, and the two detectives (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) who bring her attacker to justice years later – after he raped several more women.

8. ‘Undone’ (Amazon)

As deeply emotional and affecting as it is unsettling, Amazon’s animated series gets under your skin, in a good way. The series’ rotoscoping technique, in which animation is drawn over live footage, provides an eerie edge as it tells a magic-realist story of a stagnant 20-something woman (Rosa Salazar) who can travel in time and communicate with her dead father. But for every psychedelic trip Alma takes, she also takes a more grounded one as she tries to repair damaged relationships and plot her next course.

7. ‘Dead to Me’ (Netflix)

Christina Applegate gives her best performance in Netflix’s black comedy about a widow who unknowingly befriends the woman (the great Linda Cardellini) who killed her husband. Twisty but not gimmicky, “Dead” is addictive. The series has an abundance of acting talent, including James Marsden, who finally gets a role that takes the sheen off his perfect smile.

6. ‘Watchmen’ (HBO)

Although it started off a bit unsurely, HBO’s very loose adaptation of the graphic novel has blossomed into one of creator Damon Lindelof’s best series, and from the man behind “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” that’s some achievement. The series has a superb cast – including Regina King, Jean Smart, Jeremy Irons and Tim Blake Nelson – that elevates smart scripts that get better as the season progresses. Lindelof and his writers find surprising ways to bring the superhero story from the 1980s into today’s culture, helping “Watchmen” upend the comic book formula once again.

5. ‘When They See Us’ (Netflix)

Ava DuVernay’s striking miniseries gives voice to the so-called Central Park Five, a group of five black and Latino youths wrongly convicted of assault in one of the biggest trials of the 1980s. With an extremely talented group of young actors as the falsely accused adolescents – Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Emmy-winner Jharrel Jerome and Marquis Rodriguez – the series brings the story to the screen as a brutal, unrelenting tragedy.

4. ‘Back to Life’ (Showtime)

This British tragicomedy, starring and created by Daisy Haggard (“Episodes”), focuses on Miri, a woman who returns to her small seaside village after spending 18 years in prison for a crime that’s explained as the series progresses. Although Miri has left iron bars and jumpsuits behind, her small town is a prison of its own, where she is hated by all but her parents, her new boss and her kindly neighbor. Touching on themes of forgiveness and deception, the series is breathtaking in its emotional scope, despite the small story it tells over just six episodes.

3. ‘Chernobyl’ (HBO)

The brilliance of this historical miniseries, which chronicles the 1986 nuclear disaster at a power plant in Soviet Ukraine, creeps up on you as you watch its five episodes. Despite portraying so much death and despair, “Chernobyl” is never crass or exploitative, but rather it simply, anger-inducingly explains the failures and hubris that led to the disaster, and the people who tried to mitigate its consequences.

2. ‘Leaving Neverland’ (HBO)

Among 2019’s many true crime documentaries that made viewers question established media narratives and powerful people, this one – about two men who accused Michael Jackson of sexual abuse when they were children – stood out. Wade Robson and James Safechuck were given a platform to tell their harrowing stories, and director Dan Reed is unflinching as he captures the pain and suffering of the men and their families. Tough to watch, it’s also an eye-opening look at the lasting effects of abuse, and the way the media handles allegations against powerful men.

1. ‘Fleabag’ (Amazon)

Could there be any other choice for No. 1? Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s dark comedy ran away with the 2019 Emmy Awards for good reason. Few series have ever been as emotionally affecting and brilliantly written as “Fleabag” in its second season. The story of a self-hating and self-destructive woman (Waller-Bridge) falling in love with a Catholic priest (Andrew Scott) was both a shocking sequel to the first and an exquisitely perfect ending to Fleabag’s tale. We’ll miss her dearly.

hello. when i went to therapy on friday my therapist recommended i start writing every day again. then i didn’t write on friday. but i am writing today!

been having a lot of trouble sleeping. between feeling super restless and having nightmares i don’t get a lot of sleep. i tried taking wiley out for a long walk today and we’ll see if that helps me get a little more settled in when i try to go to bed.

i realized several days too late that i had left my pokemon in a timed mini game in poke pelago, where if you leave them in for a while their happiness goes up, but if they’re there too long their happiness starts to go down instead. so all their happiness stats were at 0 again and i accomplished nothing. i’ll try to be on top of it this time and take them out in the morning.

i have been utterly unable to eat more than a few bites at a time for the last three days. i try to break up my meals into halves and eat the leftovers the next day and i STILL can’t handle the half portions. it’s like, no matter how small i make my meals, i can still only eat a fraction of whatever i make. i guess i was hoping that exercising with the dog would bring back my appetite but it didn’t. i’ll have to try again tomorrow. i get super nauseous every time i try to eat even a little bit, to where i almost threw up immediately after getting halfway through a pb and j sandwich. that is not a hard to digest meal.

i’m not sure what to write about now... i haven’t really talked to many people the last week or so since my last entry. i am trying to build some new friendships since i don’t have the other physics majors to spend time with any more. but meeting new people is like trying to climb a wall using only my fingernails.

i am trying to be at the very least nice, if i can’t be kind. i wonder if my trepidation makes me a bad person.

star vs the forces of evil is an interesting choice for disney to broadcast. i guess the tv channel doesn’t mind letting its relationships get messy. the show has a lot of elements that i like in OTHER tv shows- but the way they’re put together in this particular show is somehow unsatisfying. i still can’t figure out why. i want to say the villain is too straightforward, but the lich from adventure time does that too and i like that villain in that show’s context. i think it’s really interesting how ludo is an ineffective villain without being sympathetic or too multi-dimensional. everything you need to know about him you learn in the first episode he shows up in. he never really shows hidden depths. you learn his dad was real hard on him and it’s like “yeah, i could have extrapolated that” and also i still didn’t feel sorry for him. i don’t think he deserved what happened to him toward the end of season 2, but it didn’t come as a surprise. he gets in way over his head and then he finds too late that he can’t swim. but having watched his first appearance, i KNEW he couldn’t swim.

i dunno. it’s a character i’ve seen before played in a way i haven’t seen before. like a captain planet villain that wandered into the horned king’s castle. the horned king is from, uh, the black cauldron. it’s not the most widely-known disney movie but it’s the best comparison i can think of.

i do have problems with the way it handles the protagonists. i was hoping that two seasons would sharpen up marco’s character but he still feels really... vague and not as perceptive as i thought he would be. i can’t get a handle on what his character is about, because it changes completely between the first and second episodes and i guess i never got over that confusion. i could forgive early installment weirdness, but the first episode is not the pilot. and marco doesn’t change over time the way finn or steven universe do. it’s a stark difference between the first and second episodes. like “these are his main character traits” differences. and the love conga line is frustrating at best. it’s not even a love triangle. it’s just a line of people pining for each other. but we know how it’s going to end because of the “blood moon destiny” thing so i don’t know why they’re bothering with all this unnecessary drama. the only thing i can hope for is that the whole “destined soulmates” thing gets directly subverted somehow.

i also am not sure how to feel about how it “gets dark.” but it’s not because i have a problem with kids’ shows getting dark? because i liked it in gravity falls, it seemed appropriate. and i liked it in adventure time and homestuck, i guess because i like getting mood whiplash. it’s been a few days and i still can’t put my finger on why it doesn’t feel right in this situation. the moment i realized i didn’t like it was very specific though. it was when queen moon goes to the monster king guy’s shack in the forest of death. ludo’s parents’ house. and you see the monster queen for the first time, and she has a black eye, and it’s very obvious that there’s some domestic abuse going on there. i saw that character and i said to myself “hmm, no, that’s too much.” but WHY did i say that to myself? i don’t expect every cartoon relationship to be happy or healthy. i guess i got too used to steven universe or something. the abusive relationship between the joker and harley quinn in the batman cartoon didn’t feel so... out of place. maybe because harley has a personality outside of “battered girlfriend/wife?”

hey look at that! i typed for like 40 minutes. most of it was navel gazing about a children’s cartoon.

i am beta reading an acquaintance’s story too. i want to talk about that now, but i think i’ve talked long enough about the media i consume for one night. i think i’ve said everything that is helpful to him, and everything that is not helpful to asher. so at least i’ve said it at some point. the story is not personally to my taste, but looking at other books that have become popular, i don’t think that the premise and direction necessarily make it a bad story. so i try to keep my critiques to the guy focused on the mechanics of the story rather than ruminating on potential metaphors and emotional payoff.

my therapist says i think a whole lot. i wondered how she knew that before we even spoke for a whole hour, but looking back at what i just wrote i feel like some things about myself might be really obvious. i’m not really as inscrutable as i’d sometimes like to be. i wonder if, since it seems easy to get a handle on my personality, that makes me a less interesting person.

i talked to asher last night about how i feel life is going for me right now and how my dreams might reflect that. he described my dreams as “fruitless tasks” and i think that is an accurate assessment. i don’t know how to summarize the feeling right now. i spent like an hour describing it last night and i don’t have that much energy left right now.

he did say something really interesting that i’ve been thinking about all day though. he said i could always choose to not do the tasks my dreams set up for me. i realized that that’s what my jumbi story is kind of about. the climax of the story, and where it kind of abruptly cuts off, is jumbi’s decision to NOT do something, and then the story ends there because she’s kind of refusing to participate in the narrative any more. she quits and goes home.

i think the only way i wouldn’t do one of my dream tasks though is if i realized i was dreaming and specifically remembered to try that, which doesn’t always happen. otherwise in my dreams i always feel like i’m going through the motions even suspecting or knowing that there’s absolutely no “reward.” feels like that when i’m awake too.

hey, sorry i talked so much. i didn’t think i had so much to say. i’m not sure how to wrap this up. everything just kind of fell out and i don’t have a pretty bow to tie it all up with. sorry, i guess.

Moral Alignment: Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment when it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

Love Language: Acts of Service Can helping with homework really be an expression of love? Absolutely! Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most wants to hear: “Let me do that for you.” Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter. When others serve you out of love (and not obligation), you feel truly valued and loved. [Mun’s Opinion: Honestly, Eidd’s answers are s p o t o n. He can be spoiled, demanding, and overly aggressive but he is kind hearted and protective of not only himself but those he cares about. His MTBI type is a little different, though I agree with it completely – he just rejects the idea of ‘tradition’ because of his past, but being a natural leader and an organizer of large events for the community is pretty much his passion. Eidd is such an extrovert and I honestly adore him despite his need to be in control and for freedom. Hogwarts house, Ennegram, Homestuck, and Artwork honestly struck me as the most scarily accurate: I’ve always said he was a Slytherin or a protective person, but the extent that it repeats affirms his character and what he really prioritizes. The artwork made me laugh – he really is a fountain of information and he does of access to multitudes (of dicks). Homestuck was really important to me for a while, so reading all of that and knowing what I know now is kind of just like “wow… yeah, that makes total sense.” What made me laugh was the friend group member, the Disney Villain, and the dere type. While I had my suspicions, now I can blast “World is Mine” male version and laugh hysterically as well as whenever I see a Samantha Jones joke, just because it fits his way of flirting really well. His vainness and his petty nature really made me giggle when he got the Evil Queen, though I was hoping that he’d get Hades but you know. I can dream.Overall, Eidd’s consistency as a muse and character baffles me everytime I take a quiz or answer questions as him – he’s one of the few that really knows himself and is confident about it. I think it shows too uwu ;; ]
