The Topic of Gender Identity - JM Focus

So. This is something that I’ve gotten asked about a few times since people became interested in my analyses. And it’s something I’ve always avoided answering because it seems to me that the topic of gender is way more touchy than the topic of sexuality.

I’m also the sort of person who doesn’t like people talking about things without some form of experience on the topic. I can talk about how I see the potential of someone being gay because I’m gay. I know what it’s like to be gay. I know what it’s like to be afraid for people to find out that you’re gay (passed that, but been there). Someone who isn’t gay and never questioned it wouldn’t have any idea what it’s like.

As someone who has struggled with gender identity myself, I’ve decided that I’ll talk about this. I’d say that I have a controversial opinion on this topic, but no matter what you say about gender identity, one person or another is going to think it’s controversial. So, really, everyone has a controversial opinion on the topic. As it is not my intention to offend anyone, I decided to share that controversial opinion. Anyway. Read on if you can handle someone talking about their opinion without getting riled up that it might be different than yours, and if you’re curious about my thoughts on the topic. If not. Move on. (BELOW THE CUT)

So. Let me start by putting in the “short story” of my gender identity, so you kind of get the idea where I’m coming from when I state my opinion on this topic. You can skip this to the part where I start talking about Jimin, but I just wanted to add this in here so you have an idea of where I’m coming from.

Currently, I identify as a cis-female lesbian, but it took me a long time to accept myself as a female. Honestly. When I was a child, I was more okay with the fact that I liked girls than the fact that I was a girl. Liking girls never felt wrong to me. Liking girls as a girl is what felt wrong. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I know how I felt.

I was what they called a “tom-boy” back in the day. I’m not sure if that term is offensive now? But I always related with the label for some reason.

My parents have a lot to do with my current view on gender identity. My mom told me when I was a little baby, my favorite color was pink. It’s currently pink. She said that once I started learning the names of colors and that they had “genders”, I took a hard turn to the color blue. I pretended that blue was my favorite color for a big part of my life, throughout high school, because I didn’t want to be associated with the “girly” things.

I also liked Hotwheels as child. I was obsessed with cars. This is something I was genuinely interested in, and not just because I wanted to distance myself from girly things. At McDonald’s they often have “boy toys” and “girl toys”. I also have one brother and two sisters. When my mom took us to McDonald’s, she’d always say she wanted “two hotwheels and two barbies”. If the checker ever said “girls and boy toys” my mom would again specify hotweels and barbies. Because she didn’t understand why they were “girl and boy toys”. As a child, I was changing her perspective on gender.

We used to go to Christmas parties when I was a kid, and Santa would always hand out presents to the kids. It always seemed they gave the boys certain toys, and the girls always got dolls or doll related things. So I started to hate going to these Christmas parties. I also question why Santa didn’t buy me the gifts I wanted. He was supposed to know what every child wanted. One year, my mom talked to the people who decided the gift buying, and they got me a giant collection of hotwheels. This Santa became my favorite.

Anyhow. I always wanted to be my dad’s son. I wanted to him to play sports with me and grill with him like he would do with my brother. When I showed more interest in those things than my brother did, he started doing them with me instead. I’d help him build things. I’d play sports with him. And we always grilled together. Until I got older and started going through the inevitable changes that every girl goes through. He stopped treating me like a son and started treating me like a daughter, and it really upset me that my dad’s whole attitude toward me would have changed like that. So I started hating being a girl even more.

Anyway, long story short (believe me, there’s a lot more to this story, but this is a Jimin focus. Not a Koala focus). I eventually came to accept that I was a girl, and actually like feminine things. But, at the same time, I actually like masculine things, too. Coming out to my family as gay really allowed me to express my gender identity more. And I think it’s funny because they often point out how I became more feminine after coming out when many females do it the opposite. I explained to them that I always wanted to be “straight” and like girls, but when I fully accepted myself as gay, I fully accepted myself as female, too.

That being said, I didn’t give in to gender norms or anything like that. I just stopped pretending to hate all feminine things for the fear of being “too much of a girl” to like girls. Pink is my favorite color, but I’ll take the whole fucking rainbow any day. I love hotwheels, and I know more about cars than most modern boys do. I know about computers, and I love math. I absolutely love playing sports (I don’t like watching them so much). I love high fantasy, and I love playing d&d with my friends. But I also love sitting down to a nice romantic movie every now and then. I play all kinds of video games from fps to dress up games, and I love the fact that I don’t have to be apologetic about any of it. I can fix my own kitchen sink and give you tips about how to get stains out of the carpet. I still hate dolls, and they are fucking creepy to me.

I can accept the term bigender for myself, but I label myself as cis-female. Because I don’t want society to tell me that “feminine” things are for girls and “masculine” things are for boys. And tell me how I need to identify because of my like or distaste for either. I don’t mind “feminine” and “masculine” labels, but I don’t think it should determine how much of a “boy” or “girl” you are. I know that people identify as trans and anywhere on the spectrum for reasons that go beyond that, and that’s fine. My story goes far beyond that as well, but that’s pretty much my main focus that brings me to this point.

So. Let’s talk about Jimin now.

IN RELATION TO JIMIN

So, I’ve had exactly one ask that wanted to know if I would refer to Jimin as “they” instead of “he” because we don’t know how he identifies, but I think that can be true for anyone. Just because JK presents himself as more masculine with the fact that he works out and is a “boy” boy, we can’t presume that he identifies as a cis-male. Even if he likes all masculine things, and there’s nothing feminine about him (which isn’t true, but even if it was), we can’t just assume that he identifies as cis-male and is totally comfortable in his 100% male role. So the fact that this seems to come up mostly in relation to Jimin kind of proves how it’s a societal “masculine” and “feminine” thing when it comes many people’s view on gender identity.

I’ve also had a lot of people come to my inbox and talk about how they don’t see why people question Jimin’s gender. “He’s not feminine at all.” And, let me just say that he really is, and I don’t think it would offend him for me to blatantly state that. When he first debuted, he really tried to present himself as masculine, and he wanted to be seen as a “strong/real man.” But he’s eased himself into what he’s more comfortable with, and he, himself, talks about this transformation. How he doesn’t have pretend anymore, and he can just be who he is. And that’s a wonderful thing. And him talking about it the way he does (I’d love to go back and find examples, so people share links if you have any otherwise it’s going to take me ages to source this) kind of tells me that he wants people to realize his transformation. That he is so unbothered by both his feminine and masculine traits that he isn’t bothered if people see him more one way or the other.

Let me bring up Jimin’s bigender tattoo, if you will. (x) Well, it’s not really a tattoo, and more of a drawing. It wasn’t permanent, but still. I’ve had a few people argue that it’s not the bigender symbol because of both extensions pointing straight instead of the masculine symbol being at an angle (x), but seeing as how I don’t know of any other symbol it could be, I’m going to assume that it was meant to be the bigender symbol.

Does this tattoo mean that he identifies as bigender? I’m leaning toward yes, but I’m also going to have to say that it doesn’t confirm anything. We don’t know the reason behind the tattoo unless Jimin tells us himself, and we don’t know the reason it was altered with both extensions being aligned instead of the way the actual symbol looks (if that detail is significant in any way).

Again, I’m leaning toward a strong possibility of him identifying as bigender because BTS are pretty socially aware, and I’m sure he knows what the symbol means. There could be a list of other reasons as to why he decided to use the symbol, so we’ll never know the truth unless he tells us.

I will say that, similar to how I think TH mentioning the Christmas song to us was to see how we’d react to the idea of him singing a romantic song with a boy, I think that Jimin putting that tattoo on his arm was to raise a similar kind of topic. I think he wants people to discuss and question his gender identity. And I think anyone who has come out to their family, friends, and societies would get the same idea. Because it’s a process, and this seems like a step in the process.

I’d often talk about how I loved it when people would mistake me for a boy, and how disappointing it was when someone would be quick to correct them. I’d talk about how being a “girl” is exhausting and how I wish I could flip a switch and be a “boy”. I’d question my parents about how they’d feel if I brought a girl home. I’d use gender neutral pronouns while talking about people I was interested in. I’d question if it was weird to want to hold hands with my best female friends. And the list goes on.

The tattoo seems like a step in a process. Maybe he’s not trying to come out, but maybe he wants us to be talking about it. I don’t think we should just assume that he’s bigender because of it (the same way we shouldn’t just assume TH is gay for Christmas song talk), but I don’t think people need to be so quick to shut the idea down. Because it’s possible that he might not identify as cis-male, and to shut down a piece of evidence like a bigender drawing on his arm is to shut down a pretty strong piece of evidence. That tattoo was drawn on Jimin for a reason because it’s supposed to mean something. Until we know what that something is, there is absolutely no harm in us fans talking and wondering about his identity. As long as we don’t shove it in Jimin’s face and demand that he talks about it. Let’s wonder together. Among ourselves.

As for which pronouns to use when talking about Jimin, until he says anything official about his identity, I think “he/him” pronouns are fine. If you want to call him “they/them”, I think that’s fine, too. I won’t simply because I only like to use “they/them” if I’m intentionally trying to be neutral or if an individual specifically requests to be addressed as such, but I don’t see the harm in anyone else doing it. I think going as far as using “she/her” could be a little too much and a little too presumptive. I’m not the sort to get offended by any type of pronouns. I identify with them all, but that’s not true for everyone. And it might not be true for Jimin. So I think it’s best to stick with “he/him” or “they/them” because they’re the most gender neutral terms.

And yeah. “He/him” is more gender neutral than “she/her”. And, even if you don’t think so, “he/him” are the terms we use to refer to biological males without knowing anything about their personal identity. I don’t think it’s “assuming he’s cis until he says otherwise.” This is just as harmful as “assuming he’s straight until he says otherwise.” Because, for me at least, “he/him” is referring to the only thing I know about his gender/sex until he confirms otherwise, and that’s the biological part of his gender/sex. It’s not me saying “Oh, I think he’s definitely cis unless he says he’s not”. Because I’m leaning more toward the “not” part of that, but the only thing I can confirm is that he is biologically male. He wouldn’t be in BTS if he wasn’t.

Bringing it back to the first point I mentioned, we can’t assume a gender identity onto any of them. Jimin brings up more questions not because of his “feminine” side, but because of that bigender symbol. But it doesn’t mean that he identifies that way, and it doesn’t mean none of the other members do.

Like I said. I was hesitant about making this post and avoided asks about this topic for a long time because people get more defensive about gender identity than sexuality, but I wanted to talk about this. Because regardless of how offended people get about this topic, I think it’s something we shouldn’t be afraid to discuss.

"Ow!" I squeak when, hot oil popping my hand when I try to turn the bacon over in the pan.

"Mom, maybe you should wait for Dad." Jamey suggests from the stool at the bar, his water colors paint set scattered across the counter.

"'Mom'? Since when am I 'Mom'?" I ask him, feeling a little hurt.

"Woodson says only babies say, 'mommy'." He says next.

"You shouldn't be taking advice from a four year old who calls his mother by her name." I state.

"He lets me play with his hotwheels during toy time." He explains as Nikki comes in from the garage and heads to the sink to wash his hands.

"I can buy you your own hotwheels, Jamey. Don't let someone boss you around because they give you something in return." I tell him.

"Why not?"

"Because you're a Sixx. And Sixxes don't sell out." Nikki states, drying his wet hands.

"Exactly." I add, hissing when I get popped again. "Can you do this?" I reluctantly ask Nikki, holding my wrist that's got a red splotch on it now and he pokes his lip out.

"Aww, poor baby," he says.

"Yeah, I am, actually." I reply and he chuckles, patting me on the ass to move me out of the way. "Thank you." I reply, kissing his cheek.

"Ew!" Jamey says, grossed out.

"Ew?!" I raise my brows, looking at him and he knows what's coming as he wiggles down from his chair. "Ew?!" I step to him and he tries to run but I catch him, making him kick his legs, squealing and laughing when I wrap my arms around him and pepper kisses to his cheek while tickling him.

"I'm sorry, mommy, I'm sorry!" He laughs out loudly.

I eventually have mercy on him, catching my breath and he turns on me, tickling me and kissing my cheek, making me laugh and fall over to the carpet.

Within a couple moments we're both out of breath and laying on the floor, looking up at the ceiling…

"So, when can we go get my hotwheels?" He asks me.

I look at him, his brown hair and green eyes, his little dimples shining with his mischievous yet wholesome smile.

"You are so much like your dad," I tell him, tickling his little apple juice belly sticking out of his transformers shirt, making him laugh again.

The phone starts ringing and I stand back up with a groan, holding my back, still sore from my antics with Nikki last night, and head to the phone in the kitchen.

"Hello?" I answer it, rubbing my lips together, seeing Jamey go to Nikki to try to watch him cook.

"H-Hey, Viv, it's Robbin." I hear on the other end and I glance at Nikki's back that's turned to me while he stands over the stove.

"Hey," I reply, turning my back, looking at the wall.

"I know we haven't spoken since me and Nikki got into it but...I really need to talk to you because I don't know who else to really go to about it that won't run their mouth, right now." He says shakily and I furrow my brows.

"What's going on?"

"I can't tell you over the phone, Viv, you know, I really can't, it's um...do you think you can meet me somewhere?"

"Now?"

"Well, tonight," He says.

"Um...I--yeah, yeah, I can." I nod, remembering we only have Jamey since Monroe and Santana are with Sharise.

"I'm staying at that shithole hotel off Sunset, right now." He tells me.

"Okay, I'll be down there in a couple hours." I say.

"Alright, see you then."

"Alright, bye,"

"Bye." We hang up and put the phone on the hook and let out a heavy sigh, rubbing my forehead.

"Who was that?" Nikki asks, putting the bacon onto a plate.

"Izzy's back in town to visit." I lie without skipping a beat. "He wants to hangout." I add.

"Oh." He mumbles, unconvinced, and I sigh out.

"Jamey, baby, go wash your hands for dinner." I tell him.

"Yes, ma'am." He says, walking back to his bathroom.

"Is me going out tonight a problem?" I ask him, crossing my arms.

"I didn't say that." He says, turning to face me. "I didn't say that at all." He passively shrugs.

"You're acting like it." I say next and he turns back around to pour the grease in the pan out as I grab my glass of water off the counter and take a sip.

"Just '91 and '92 all over again." He

mumbles, referring to the copious amounts of time I spent with Izzy on the Illusion tour.

I slam my glass down on the counter and glare at his back.

"If you wanna accuse me of another affair, you can, I don't care." I tell him.

"I'm not accusing you of anything."

"'Just like '91 and '92'? Did you forget you accused me multiple times of screwing Izzy in those two years or…?"

"Trust me, Viv, it's hard to forget your wife barely calling you to check in, barely taking your calls--"

"I was under a lot of stress and pressure, Nikki, I was tired and wasn't awake a majority of the times you'd call."

"You were also pregnant and had no Goddamn business--"

"--Don't say that word, Nikki--"

"--Even being on that tour." He ignores me.

I don't answer, trying to understand his perspective before things escalate.

"I love you, but I'm going after dinner." Is all I say.

"You say that like anything I've ever said has stopped you from doing exactly what you wanted to do." He says as I'm about to go to our room and I immediately turn on my heel and face him again.

"Excuse me?" I snap.

"I'm hungry!" Jamey yells from his hallway, running this way.

"I'll handle you later." Nikki promises me in a grumble and our son comes in before I can answer.

365 days later..

It’s been one year since our boy has entered our lives and lemme tell ya, it’s been one heck of a ride! After checking out from the hospital and arriving home, yes, things were definitely different for both me and my wife. We had less time for sleep, we shifted turns on who’s gonna put the little guy to sleep, I had to wake up damn early (WHICH IS NOT IN MY HUMAN NATURE). On weekdays, I would work, like any human being does. But, after work days, I would come home and take care of the little guy. Spend little time with him before I go to sleep. (I was in a graveyard shift, so). And on weekends, it’s my day off from work, but my work day on family. I would have my wife rest and let me take care of the baby.... and her. It’s a double job, I gotta watch over the kid and get my wife a glass of water or whatever she would want. It wasn’t easy, it was exhausting and it was draining. And I thought, if it was that hard, I could only imagine the feeling of my wife with every day. But, of course, in every tough and exhausting day, there are always rays of sunshine that my boy brings to us. With every smirk my son would do, every coo, our hearts would melt. Every time he would tighten his hold to our fingers, every time he would mumble, every time he would wake up, all would be worth it. Months went by, and naturally, he’s growing. His first words, first steps, first giggles and laughs.

Every month, we would celebrate our kid. We would eat out or just cook something and eat. I’m pretty sure every newbie parent does that. lol (NEWBIE HERE)

In every day I see him, I’m happy. Well, I think all of the parents would feel the same with their child. That’s why I’m lucky to be a father. Because there’s 2 things that make me happy, my son and my wife. I remember back in the day when we didn’t know that my wife was pregnant, I had a scooter. One of a kind, sexy-looking Honda Click. I had a collection of sneakers, I was vaping back then. I had my dream Samsung phone. I was always thinking of buying things for me.. and for my girlfriend (Who’s my wife now). But, after the news popped, of course, I was shocked. Like I said, I didn’t know what to do.. except for one thought in my mind.. SACRIFICE. I’m gonna be a dad back then, and I didn’t have much money. So, I returned my beloved scooter to the dealer. Because I was paying monthly for it, how am I gonna save money for the “Big Day”? I sold some of my sneakers, which I saved up for back in High School. I stopped vaping because it’s actually like a commitment, you know? You have to change your cotton once in a while, you have to change your coils every week, you have to buy juices every now and then, it’s pricey. So, I stopped vaping and sold my set. And finally? I sold my dream phone. Well, 2 of them. A Samsung Note II and a Samsung S7 Edge. And you know what? I didn’t have any regrets.. I sent my scooter back, means I’ll be taking the Bus, which means more time on the road. I sold some of my sneakers, which means I have to wear 1 pair of shoes now. I sold my vape set, which means HOW THE HELL AM I GONNA DEAL WITH STRESS lol. And I sold my phone, now I’m sharing phones with my wife. But none of those mattered. You see, when you sacrifice for something or someone you love, it will be worth it. Trust me. It will. I don’t have the answers. but it will. And when you sacrifice, something comes with it and it’s called ADJUSTMENTS. You adjust to the new things you gain from sacrificing something you had. And that, my friend, makes you somewhat better. It’s been a year now, and my son just turned 1. He learned to walk, to ask for something he wants, scream, cry on purpose, make car noises, say “Happy” but “Appbee”, and he likes to push things around and play with Hotwheels. And my wife and I got the change to know each other deeply. It doesn’t end here, of course. We have a lot of years to face. But with Sacrifice and Adjustments? I think we’ll be just fine. :) Now, what adventures wait for our family next? Hmm. Let’s find out on the next episode. :)

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. In July 2012 my daughter took out a pay monthly insurance policy with close premium 139 per month which was paid from my bank account every month on time for 12 months. When due for renewal August 2013 the insurance company sent her a quote saying payments were 168 per month! In view of this she decided not to insure her car and didn't use it. Shortly afterwards she receives a letter from close premium saying Hastings insurance could cover her for 100 per month but she never accepted this offer. In September 2013 Hastings took payment from my account so I contacted bank and recalled the payment. She now has a recovery agency acting on behalf of Hastings claiming she owes 400 . I can't see how she owes this money ? Do we have to pay this when we never accepted the policy and close premium passed on my bank details without my knowledge ? ( hope this makes sense)

I'm almost 20 years old, a full time student and do not have health insurance. When I was 16, my parents switched insurance companies, and for some reason or other they did not put me on their policy. So I have not had insurance for 3 years. In February I found out I was pregnant so I began applying for Medicaid. Before all the paperwork was done, I had miscarried and in the process racked up almost $6000 in medical bills. I went to the medicaid office and they told me that they would cover my bills even though I was no longer pregnant and college students don't qualify. After 2 months of waiting, Medicaid denied me and the hospital turned me into a collection agency. I was denied because I make too much money. I make $8.55 an hour and work about 15 hours a week. Yes I do make good money for a student but I have worked at the business for 3 1/2 years. Because I am not a full time employee, I don't qualify for insurance, but only managers and department heads are full time. I can't get a second job to help pay the costs because my first job wont work around another one, and I can't find a full time job because no where is hiring. Just from some light browsing on the internet, it seems like they (the advertisers/car manufacturers) want us to believe that $30k is a reasonable median cost for a new car in the U.S. The price goes up disporportionately if they can call it a 'crossover' or the holy grail: SUV!!! $$$$$$$$ Assuming a person makes around $50k a year gross/ $30k a year net (is that a reasonable assumption for the U.S.?), and assuming the car will be worth close to $0 in 5 years, a $30k car works out to be around 20% of his or her income, not including gas repairs insurance et cetera. Is this reasonable? Is it sustainable? Are we heading for a 'correction' in auto pricing? or is the plan that we all just use financing tricks to perpetuate these exhorbitant prices?""

Car accident and lapse of insurance...?

Alright, this is part two of my question. To recap, on March 25 I was in a two car motor vehicle accident in California. I had no idea that my insurance had lapsed because I had moved before the notice was sent out. Therefore, I told the police that I had insurance under my current holder. Both parties feel the other person was at fault for this accident. My car was totaled while his only had minor damage. Myself and my passenger were hurt, while the other car's passengers werent. Now, my questions are as follows: 1. Do I need to call the police and let them know that I had no insurance, but just reinstated it yesterday? 2. Will I be facing jail time or just fines? I am willing to pay anything in order to clear this up. 3. Will I lose my license? 4. What other steps do I now need to take to resolve this issue? I've never had a wreck before and I have a clean criminal record, so I am a newbie to this process. Please help me!""
