The Recruit (Chapter 4) - Mitch Rapp
Author: @were-cheetah-stiles
Title:Â âDay 12âł
Characters: Mitch Rapp, Stan Hurley, Rob Russells & Reader
Warnings: Slow burn, some more touchinâ, cursing.. there will pretty much always be cursing.. I curse a lot, so now you as the reader will to. Iâm. Not. Sorry.
Authorâs Note: Another favorite chapter, this one was just fun to write..
Summary: Stan has the recruits create an undercover identity so that they can infiltrate a college reunion and convince the guests that they were also members of the graduating class. Mitch and Y/N have a moment.Â
Additional Note: This is very, very, very loosely based on like an idea from an episode of Quantico. Loosely being the operative word.
Additional Additional Note: In the original story, this is not Mitch x Reader, itâs Mitch x OFC, and her name is Willa, so when Rob says âWill Petersen blah blah blahâ thatâs where that came from.
Chapter Three - Chapter Four - Chapter Five
Stan stood in the front of the charter bus, his hands gripping the seats next to him, as he spoke to the recruits. "We're going to be pulling up to the hotel ballroom in a few minutes. Just a reminder that going undercover is not going to be easy, and we will be stopping the people we see talking to you before they leave to see if they believed your cover story or not. Remember, College of William and Mary is a medium sized university. The graduating class of 2012 was about 2,100 people, so while it's enough for you to get by, these people will probably be able to tell when they don't recognize someone. If you don't know your new identity backwards and forwards, tonight, you get punished back at the Barn. If you don't know your undercover identity in the field, you get killed, so take this seriously. Itâs not just a party with free booze. Youâre all working."
"Are we allowed to use each other to play off of our identities? No one ever goes to these things alone." Rob asked, making a good point.
"That's true, Russells. Most people would not show up to a five year college reunion alone, but I don't advise this unless you know enough about someone else's identity to not expose them as a fraud, and in doing that, yourself as a fraud."
Mitch watched from behind, through the crack in between the seats as Rob turned to you and stuck out his hand for you to shake. "Nice to meet you, I'm Will, Will Peterson and I'm from New York City, and I speak three languages." Rob grinned and Mitch smirked, and snickered to himself.
You stared at Rob with a deadpan expression, and left his hand still floating in the air. "......you stole my identity and made me a man?" Rob nodded, vigorously grinning. You rolled your eyes, and huffed, finally flimsily shaking Rob's hand. "Fine. I'm Maggie Sheffield and I'm from Portland, Oregon. I swear, I think I once sat next to you at a football game at Zable Stadium."Â
"This is going to be awesome." Rob was overly excited.
You walked in the hotel ballroom, dimly lit and full of people, and made a straight shot towards the bar. You immediately ordered a microbrew craft beer, then sat down on a bar stool in the middle. You were wearing black suede thigh-high boots with a tall, chunky heel, with a short cream colored dress that hugged your body and showed off your toned figure. You sipped the bitter, hoppy beverage and sucked at your teeth. You hated hoppy beer, but you were crafting a character, so you drank it anyway.
You glanced at the end of the bar and saw three guys huddled around eyeing you. You pressed your tongue between your lips, and leaned over the wooden bar. "Hey, can I ask you a quick favor?" You got the bartender's attention. He turned back around and grinned, happy that the beautiful girl had stuck around instead of leaving the bar to mingle with the other alumni. "Can you wait until those guys aren't paying attention and pour out half of my beer, then put it back here?"
The bartender glanced over at the guys and looked back at you. "You trying to get them to buy you a drink?"
"Kind of..."
"You know it's an open bar, right?"
"I know." You smirked.
The bartender stepped back and eyed you up and down. "Yea, I'd buy you a drink at a free bar because of that dress too.."
You playfully bit the tip of your thumb and smiled. You knew how to play up the flirtation and get a guy to notice you. The bartender sneakily did as you asked and you took another sip of your now almost empty drink, making eye contact with the one in the middle, as you licked your lips and placed your glass back down. You checked the delicate rose gold watch on your wrist, and fiddled with your hair, twirling it around your finger.
"Hey, can we get you another drink?" You smirked as you heard the voice of one of the men who had walked over with his buddies from the other end of the bar. You had succeeded in seducing them over to you.
You turned and gave your most devastating smile to the three men hovering next to your seat. "I would love that. Thank you. I can't seem to get his attention."
"I don't know how that's possible with you in those boots but I guess he didn't see you walk in like we did... YO, bartender! We'll have another round and some shots of tequila." One of the guys yelled obnoxiously. You faked flattery and a giggle, and looked for the bartender. You caught Mitch leaning against the bar directly behind you, waiting for the bartender to take care of his other customers before getting to him, and glancing at you out of the corner of his eye. "I'm Brian, and this is Zach and Andy." The guy in the middle made introductions, snapping your focus back to your marks, as you flirtatiously shook their hands. You all did your shots and continued talking.
"Wait, no way, what semester did you take European Lit. with Mr. Moore?" You asked Brian, leaning in to let him get an eyeful of your cleavage.
"Spring semester, Sophomore year. I know you were in that class. I remember you." Brian told you, buying the story that you had pawned off on them.
"Oh my god, I absolutely hated that class... what was that one book we read that was just awful? Ugh, I can't remember the name... it had that guy.."
"Beowulf!" Brian shouted drunkenly.
You paused for a half second, after being surprised that this idiot in front of you picked such a good classic book. You heard Mitch snicker behind you. "That was it! God, that was such a stupid book... Grendel was not even that scary.." You laughed and took a sip of your drink, watching the three men talking in front of you about their careers and other things that you couldn't care any less about. You heard Mitch's voice behind you.
"Steven Greene, nice to meet you." Mitch said in his low, husky tone.
"My friend and I were saying that you had to be someone's date because we definitely would have remembered someone as gorgeous as you at graduation." The woman speaking to Mitch giggled drunkenly.
"Ah yea... I've, uh, lost some weight since graduation, but uh what are both of your names?" The women fawned over him, divulging their life stories. "Oh wow, I'm from Bethlehem." Mitch told one of them, trying to feign excitement. You rolled your eyes at their conversation.Â
"You're from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania?! NO WAY. I grew up in Allentown. That's amazing. What high school did you go to?" The woman named Stacey pushed her hand against Mitch's shoulder causing Mitch to lean back against you. You kicked him lightly under the bar and Mitch grinned.
"I went to Freedom High School, all my friends went to Liberty though." Mitch explained. He had clearly done his research and you were impressed at how confidently he spoke about a person that didnât exist.
"That's so funny, I knew a couple of kids at Freedom. Did you know Matthew Yeisman or Sarah Keller?" The woman drunkenly babbled.
Mitch shook his head. "The names sound familiar but it was so long ago now..." He shrugged.
The more sober woman interjected and asked Mitch what he did professionally since college. "Well, my freshman roommate and I, we moved up to New York together after graduation and both work on Wall Street now at Morgan Stanley." Mitch answered confidently, and listened to the womanâs next question. "Oh, we lived in Yates Hall." Mitch answered the woman who was trying to find common ground through his freshman dorm hall.
You were forced to cease eavesdropping on Mitch's conversation when you heard your cover's name. "Maggie.. Maggie, I asked if you want to dance?" Brian asked you, putting his hand on your knee. You thought about the ways in which you could break his fingers.
You smiled. "I'm sorry, I'd love to. But I have to use the ladies room really quick. I'll be right back. Order me another drink!" You shouted as you walked away, with zero intention of returning.
You walked through the room looking for Rob and Julian. You wondered how they were making out. You saw Rob standing next to a group of four women who all looked annoyed and bored. You grabbed an hor d'oeuvres off a moving tray and popped it in your mouth, then grabbed a champagne off another tray and downed it, trying to get the taste of the IPA off your tongue.Â
You got close enough to hear what the girl in the blue jumpsuit was saying to Rob. "I seriously don't think you were in my women's studies class junior year. There were three guys in that class and I would've remembered one as gigantic as you." You watched as one of the other women whispered to her friend about Rob. "This guy clearly didn't go here, he is so clueless. I bet heâs just another one of those party crashers."
You decided to intervene on your friend's behalf. You ran up to Rob and grabbed him by the arm. "Will? Will Peterson? Oh my god, I haven't seen you since graduation! How are you?"
Rob looked stunned, and then snapped back into character. "Maggie! Maggie Sheffield, how are you?" You hugged the large man.
"I'm sorry, ladies. I didn't mean to interrupt. I just, I had to. I took a Women's Studies class with Will here in Senior year and for a guy, he was so insightful. He wrote a paper about misogyny that our professor literally read out loud to the class because it was so thoughtful." You were charming and disarming. The women all relaxed and began chatting to the two undercover trainees.Â
"Ugh, I always wished I was in Yates Hall. My freshman dorm was so boring." One of the women asked you a question that you knew that you couldn't answer without getting caught, but you were quick on your feet. "Oh my god, wait.. wait.." You giggled and grabbed the arm of one of the women in front of you. "I LOVE this song... Do you guys want to dance?"
You knew that the women wanted to get away from Rob. He hadn't blown his cover but he was terrible with women, and generally came off as too strong due to his eagerness and intimidating size. The women all agreed and began skipping and stumbling to the dance floor. "See you later Will." You grinned back at your friend. You danced with you new group of girlfriends to Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk".
Mitch had finally shaken the two women from earlier and was talking to a group of guys about finance and the economy. He had fully convinced them all that he was in their business fraternity with them and was networking with one of them about trying to get the guy a job that didn't actually exist at Morgan Stanley with Mitch. Mitch caught a glimpse of you shaking and gyrating on the dance floor and suddenly found himself unable to look away. He watched as you dropped to the floor, your legs looking long and sleek in your tall boots, and your body looking tight as you shimmied your way back up. He was mesmerized by the way your face lit up with a genuine smile as you danced to a song that you clearly, actually liked. He was taken aback at how sexy you were and how hard he was finding it to focus on his conversation. Mitch was snapped back to reality when one of the men patted Mitch on the shoulder and invited him to their pick-up football game on campus the following afternoon. Mitch agreed and exchanged fake information, then excused himself to get another drink, glancing back at the dance floor but no longer seeing you.
Mitch leaned against the bar, one leg on the stool and one foot touching the floor, and waited for the bartender to make his rounds. A woman leaned next to him and smiled. Mitch nodded politely and went back to waiting for the bartender.
"Hi, I'm Alicia." She stuck out her hand to shake Mitch's. "So who are you here with? I don't remember you from the class photo."
"Steven Greene." Mitch shook her hand. "I came alone tonight, just wanted to meet up with some old buddies from the business fraternity and get a free drink, you know?" Mitch put on his most charming and unassuming smile.
The woman blushed but persisted. "You were in the business school? I just... I don't know, I don't mean to be forward, but you are so handsome, I really feel like I would've remembered you. What dorm did you live in Freshman year?" She asked.
"Yates. What about you?"
"I lived in Yates too. I... I am stunned, I really don't remember y-"
"Hey babe, I was looking for you everywhere." You cut the woman off mid-sentence, hooked your arm around Mitch's and pressed your body against his. Mitch felt a surge of energy rush through his body as you leaned against him. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. I sent him over here forever ago for our drinks." You leaned over the bar and Mitch's lap and caught your old bartender friend's attention. You felt Mitchâs hand slowly and hesitantly slide across your back, and suddenly you felt weak. You exhaled, trying to focus on your words. "Hi, can I get a champagne, a whiskey neat, and whatever she's having." You flashed your most dazzling smile at the woman.
"A Chardonnay please." Alicia told the bartender. "Thank you, I couldn't get a drink in to save my life." She nodded at you.
"I'm sorry, I'm being so rude. My name is Maggie Sheffield, I didn't catch yours."
"Alicia Hardwick." The woman shook your hand. "I was just talking to Steven here about how we both lived in the same dorm Freshman year, but I don't quite remember him." The woman sounded suspicious.
"Oh my god, you lived in Yates Hall too? Ugh, I really love that building. It's where Steven and I first met. Oh my god, it was the cutest story, wasn't it, S?" You looked up at him and Mitch nodded. The bartender brought your drinks over and Mitch handed them to you and Alicia. "Thanks, babe. So anyway, isn't this funny? I was literally just talking to my friend over there. Rosemary? She's dancing with Katie Myers, Lindsay Orly and Jen Smith?" You pointed to the group of women that you had been chatting and dancing with, and the suspicious Alicia craned her neck to see.
"Oh, I think I remember Rosemary, she lived on the second floor, right?" Alicia tested you.
"Actually, I think it was the third floor. Right, babe?" You looked up at Mitch, and he nodded. You leaned back against Mitch's chest, and he wrapped an arm around you, as you continued trying to convince this woman that Mitch had lived in her Freshman dorm. "Anyway, Rosemary and I were talking about the night when Steve and I met. I was in Rosemary's room borrowing notes for a class, and Steven and her were friendly and he popped his head in to borrow something from her."
"Toothpaste...." Mitch added, trying to help you out from doing all of the heavy lifting.
"Yea..." You smiled up at Mitch and snuggled hard against him. Mitch's breath hitched in the back of his throat, and his hand involuntarily squeezed at your hip harder. Your heart raced at the intimate touching. "Anyway, it was late and Rosemary introduced Steve and I, and Steve was like, 'it's not safe to walk back to your dorm alone this time of night.'" You made a mocking voice. "Even though I just lived over in the Green and Gold Village." You laughed. "But I thought he was cute, a little chubbier back then, but god we all had some baby fat still, am I right?" You laughed and lightly tapped Alicia on the shoulder. "So anyway, he walked me back to my dorm, and nine years later, we're still together." You smiled up at Mitch, then looked back at Alicia. "I'm so sorry, you didn't even remotely want to hear that story, it's just fun getting to tell it to people we went to school with who get how silly it was that Steve was trying to convince me that it was unsafe to walk from Yates to Green and Gold at 11 on a Tuesday night."
"No, no... I'm sorry. I was giving Steve the third degree before because I didn't remember him. We had some party crashers thrown out earlier and I thought he was a straggler because I didn't remember him, but I think I actually remember seeing you two hanging out together in the Yates common room now. I'm just being an alarmist. I feel awful. I'm so sorry, Steve." Alicia apologized profusely.
"It's totally fine. I get it. It's hard to remember everyone from our class. I mean, 2,000 doesn't seem that big in theory, but throw a few new beards, a few extra pounds and five years, and itâs hard to remember anyone." Mitch told her, taking a sip from his whiskey. He was in the clear because of you.
Mitch had knocked on your door, but no one answered. He couldn't get the image of you dancing in that tight cream colored dress out of his head, so he went down to the hotel lounge for a drink. He spotted you curled up on a couch in the corner of the lounge, light and dreamy piano music playing for the late night crowd in the background.Â
You had a piece of chocolate cake on the arm of the sofa, a fork in hand, a half drunk glass of champagne on the table next to you, and Lord of the Flies folded up in front of your face. You were wearing a blue and red, oversized flannel shirt, black leggings and your moccasins sat on the floor, as your bare feet were tucked underneath you. Mitch ordered a whiskey neat and sat down on the loveseat next to you.
You grinned when you saw him sit. Mitch still had his well-fitted navy blue dress pants on with a crisp white shirt still perfectly tucked in, and unbuttoned neatly by the collar, his mahogany wingtips still perfectly polished and clean. "Well, hey there, Steven Greene. Fancy seeing you here." You said, placing your book and fork down and picking your drink up to your still perfectly done lips. Your hair still cascaded with natural looking curls and your eyeliner was still in place without a smudge.
âI think Y/N suits you better than Maggie.â Mitch said as he settled in next to you.Â
âJust like Mitch suits you.â You took a sip of champagne and felt the bubbles lightly popping as they went down your throat.
You watched as Mitch pressed the clear glass tumbler to his lips and sipped his nightcap. "I canât believe you didnât laugh when that guy said Beowulf."
"Oh, I canât believe I didnât either. What an idiot."
"Yea, you definitely shouldnât talk to anyone that doesnât appreciate good literature." Mitch commented, the alcohol made him much looser than he normally was.
You smiled, and turned more of your body towards him.. your knee touching his leg, and neither of you moving away. "Then I think Iâd only be able to talk to you.."
"Thatâs fine with me.." Mitch was cut off from the guy that hit on you earlier in the night.
"Maggie.. hey, I've been looking for you all night. It's Brian, from earlier. You know, I can ask the old guy to play something a little bit more upbeat since you still owe me that dance." The man slurred his speech as he ignored Mitch's presence. Brian's friends looked on from the bar, shaking their heads. A few of the other recruits who were also at the bar watched and waited to see what Mitch would do.
"Hey man, I'm Steve, and I think you should probably get some water... hit the hay." Mitch interjected.
"I'm not talking to you, bro. I'm talking to Maggie."
Mitch stood up. "I'd prefer if you didn't since Maggie is my fiancee." You quickly grabbed Mitch's arm with your left hand, obstructing the view of your bare ring finger.
"Steve, sit down, it's okay." You fake begged him.
"Nah, bro, why don't you come tell me to get lost to my face!" The man was belligerent, but Mitch leaned forward anyway. He was feeling suddenly very territorial. You could easily tell that Mitch was ripped through his tight, white shirt and his stature was looming in comparison. Brian's friends came to quickly collect their drunk friend, apologized and dragged him upstairs.
"Oh Steve, thank god for you. I would've hated having to sleep with that guy just to keep my cover in tact." Mitch narrowed his eyes at you, he could hear the sarcasm in your voice. He chuckled and shook his head, sitting back down next to you, and picking his drink back up to take another sip.
"You really saved my ass earlier."
"Actually, Maggie saved your ass." You joked.
Mitch frowned. "Don't undersell yourself. I was watching you all night. You even had me convinced at times that you actually did graduate with those people." Your heart skipped a beat when you heard Mitch say that he had been watching you all night.Â
âAll night?â You questioned, coyly. You had caught him watching you dance earlier that evening and while tipsy, decided to put on a bit of a show for him. You were pleased that he had noticed.
âAll night... and you were good at this.â Mitch reminded you of what he was talking about.
"Thanks.. it's not a big deal though, honestly. It's really just getting your foot in the door and getting them talking. People love to spill their life stories to anyone who will really listen at these sorts of things."
"I'll remember that for next time." Mitch told you. "So where'd you come up with your alias?"
"Maggie was the name of my dog growing up, and the rest of the story is literally just my cousin Francine Sheffield, she's from Portland, we kind of look alike, she has an interesting enough backstory but is still far enough away that..." You shrugged your hands. Mitch understood. "Who's Steven Greene, millionaire financial genius?" You asked.
"My brother."
You looked surprised. "I didn't know you had a brother.. with a different last name then you?"
Mitch laughed, the whiskey really loosening him up. "Well my brother is Steven, and he is doing really well for himself on Wall Street, but the Greene part is just cause Steve loved Rachel Green from Friends growing up, and I don't know, it was just one of those things that I thought of when I was trying to find a good fake last name."
"Do you miss your family?" You asked, leaning closer to hear him over the piano music. You rested your head on the back of the couch, close enough to him that if he bent down, he could feel if your lips were as soft and pillowy as they looked. He had to fight the drunken impulse not to.
He thought about telling you a lie about his family, as not to ruin the mood, but decided he didn't want to lie to you. "I do miss my brother. He's a great guy, and I havenât seen him in well over a year. But, umm..." Mitch pursed his lips. "My parents died in a car crash when I was fourteen. So I guess I miss them too." He chuckled once to himself, clearly uncomfortable with admitting the truth.
Your heart sunk. You pressed your hand against Mitch's knee and rubbed it. "I'm so sorry, that's devastating..." Mitch shrugged. He was distracted by your touch. "I guess that explains the boarding schools then."
A smile curled in the corner of his mouth. "You really do listen to people when they talk."
You decided to use the alcohol in your system as an excuse to be brazen. "Well, I listen to you at least.... I like talking to you. It's easy and you're interesting."
Mitch downed the rest of his drink, catching the bartender's attention and signaling for another round. He turned back to you, running his long fingers over the back of your hand. "I like talking to you."
His words sent shivers down your spine and you blushed. âMitch, I..â
The bartender brought over your fresh drinks and interrupted your moment. Mitch looked up at the bartender and then at you, and snapped back to reality. This wasn't a vacation, it wasn't a chance to connect with someone else. This was training to get revenge for Katrina. Mitch downed his drink and stood up.
"I'm gonna turn in. Can I walk you up?" He asked, fidgeting with the watch on his wrist.
You nodded, downed your own drink, slipped your shoes on your feet, grabbed your book and followed him to the elevator bank in the lobby. You both turned as you heard a large group come in from the hotel ballroom, the reunion still raging on. One of the women that had flirted with Mitch earlier saw him as the group walked towards the elevators.
"Oh my god, Steve! Steve! Iâm so happy youâre here. We're all heading up to the pool, you should come!" She drunkenly slurred as Mitch, you, the woman, and her group piled into the elevator.
"I'm good." Mitch told her, not looking up, but instead staring down in your Y/E/C eyes. You got pressed up against Mitch as the group shoved themselves into the elevator. He wrapped his arms protectively around you again, like he had earlier that night, but better because he could see your face this time. He stared at the small freckles on your nose and cheeks and your long eyelashes. "Excuse us." Mitch said as the elevator stopped on the recruitâs floor, and he guided you out, his hand resting against the small of your back. He walked down the hall with you, his hand still pressed against your body, until you both made it to your door.
He watched as you dipped the keycard into your door and the green light flashed indicating it was unlocked. You turned the handle and pushed it open slightly. You then turned and looked up at him. "Do you want to come in?" You whispered.
Mitch nodded, his heart racing fast as he accepted your invitation. The alcohol was dampening his guilt, and he couldn't deny how much he wanted you and wanted to not leave you. As he stepped into your room, he heard a latch click on the door next to yours and saw Rob and Julian walk out of their room. "Hey Mitch! Want to come down to the bar with Julian and I?" Rob bellowed.
"Dude..." Julian elbowed Rob. He understood that that wasn't Mitch's room and that it was late.
"What?" Rob was oblivious.
Mitch looked down at you. This wasn't right. Neither of you were sober. His face became pensive. He took his hand off of your waist and placed it in his pocket. "Goodnight, Y/N."
"Goodnight." You said, your face faltering from the rejection, as you closed your door.
"Nah, man. I was just walking Y/N back from down there. I'm gonna go head back to my room and go to bed." Mitch told the two men.
Mitch dipped his keycard into the lock on his door and heard it click. He turned the handle and paused. He thought about going back to your room and seeing you. He shook his head. "Just go to bed, Mitch." He muttered to himself as he closed the door behind him.

What Just Happened?!?: No Future in the Past (S2E08)
TACOS ARE TASTY! TACOS ARE TASTY! Holy freakinâ balls. My emotions. My feelings. Holy shitballs the angst. Holy backstory.
New-ish Character(s)
By that I mean now we know concrete things about them.
Father Juan Carlo, curiously called Padre by others but he refers to himself as Father: Owns a chop shop, heâs who you call if you need your car towed, and the Chief of the Volunteer Fire brigade.
Robert Svane: A friend of Wyatt Earp who delivered messages between estranged BFFs Doc and Wyatt.Â
Sheriff Clootie: A madman, the unhinged Sheriff of Purgatory with three wives and fathered Constance Clootieâs two demon sons that were killed by Wyatt Earp. Oh. He was the one who cursed Wyatt.
Monster(s) of the Week
Itâs apparently my feelings because it has been utterly destroyed by this episode and Iâm not sure I have made my peace.
Final Thoughts (before I get into it, because oh boy! do I get into it.Some spoilers? IDK at this point I think everyone knows what went on, in general)
Holy storyline and so much information! I watched it live. Watched it again immediately after. Watched it a day later. And then I watched it again and took notes. So much notes that I felt like I was in a vision quest back to my Organic Chemistry class.
This episode gave us a concrete How the Earp Curse Began 101. In Season 1, they did say how and why, but as with Wynonna Earp, things move quickly and people may have missed it. Itâs interesting to point out that there may be episode parallels between the seasons. For instance, S1E07 and S2E07 are both major Wynaught episodes; S1E08 and S2E08 are both Wynonna learning more about Earp history (S1E08 she learned Ward wasnât exactly the heroic Earp heir and S2E08 she learns about the origins of the curse); S1E09 and S2E09 are both written by Alexandra Zarowny (AKA Wayhaught Whisperer) so I think weâre gonna have a major Wayhaught moment this Friday. Of course, it could all be nothing. But, it could be something.
Anyways, what I found interesting in this episode was how it showed us different sides of characters. How the paragon of all things good and moral and just can actually fuck up because sheâs only human and can make mistakes. Or, how the evil demon who letâs be honest seduced a young girl in captivity and called it love was once a good man, meek but loyal to his friend. Is it a thing that itâs these two characters? Maybe. And if you follow that road you can come up with so many theories and speculation that itâll be hard to climb out of the rabbit hole. Did that happen to me? LMFAO OF COURSE! It really is probably nothing and just a coincidence (I suppose weâll see by the end of the season, I hope).
Continue reading for...well, hopefully, at this point you know what youâre gonna get if you usually read these âWhat Just Happenedâ posts. Why do I have no picture? I got lazy. Again.
10 Things That Happened
1. Willa Earp: The bitchiest bitch there is, the bitchiest bitch there was, and the bitchiest bitch there ever will be. And not in the sassy, fierce bitch way. It comes to no surprise that in S1 reaction vids, whenever Willa comes on many shouts of âWilla, you bitch!â are heard. This flashback to a young Waverly just shows the hatred Willa had towards the youngest Earp. Keep in mind: Willa is 8/9 years older than Waverly. When she threw Mr. Rabbit on the pond/lake so that Waverly will fall through the ice, Willa was old enough and capable of understanding death.Â
2. âGod, I tried so hard, but nobody ever celebrated my birthday, or ordered copies of my school photos, noticed my report cards.â Itâs safe to say Waverly was a sad child. Remember her family portrait drawing from S1, where every one was smiling except for her? Now, maybe Iâm thinking too much, but something does NOT add up with this statement, unless things are so dark in the Wynonna Earp Universe that even Gus and Curtis neglected Waverly.Â
Waverly was 4 when Mama Earp (Wendy Rossie) left (Wynonna 10 and Willa 13). This was around the time Bobo persuaded Waverly to bury the talisman that allowed Revenants to set foot on the Earp homestead. She buried the talisman because she thought â..it would stop Mom and Dad from fightingâ (S1E02).
Waverly was 6 when the homestead was attacked and Ward was killed and Willa was taken (Wynonna 12 and Willa 15).Â
Presumably Wynonna was institutionalized or sent to a foster home soon after, but Waverly would have spent the majority of her childhood and schooling years with the McCreadyâs, who took her in (I think Gus is Mama Earpâs sister? Was that my headcanon/read it in a fic? Or is that actual canon fact?). Wynonna would have been in and out of her life.Â
Am I missing something? Yes, I understand that Ward largely neglected Waverly, but it seems that Willa was the direct source of Waverlyâs horrible childhood with the Earps (See: Willa tried to fucking murder her!!). Which then should shift the focus to Curtis and Gus McCready. They were the ones who, basically, raised Waverly. As any psychologists and others who work in the medical field will tell you, children are resilient. I understand that Waverly had a traumatic childhood. However, why didnât her sense of abandonment and neglect (for the lack of a better term/I canât find words)Â âgo awayâ after leaving a toxic environment and joining the McCready Family, a presumably healthy and nurturing environment? Is there something more with Gus and Curtis we donât know about? I mean, obviously, because CURTIS KNEW ABOUT THE STONE WITCHâS SONS!!!! HE WAS THE KEEPER OF THE BONES! HE HAD THE SKULL! WHY?!? ANDRAS, ARE YOU GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS?!?
3. âMama used to call you her angel.â/âWhat is my angelâs name?â. Hello, if you regularly read âWhat Just Happened?!?â, then you know that Iâm one of the few(?) who donât think Waverly is the half-revenant child rumored to exist and I donât think Bobo is Waverlyâs father. The scientist in me is screaming âOCCAMâS RAZORâ. But the writer in me who never really finishes a story because of always thinking of storylines is saying âItâs too convenient. Too many so-called hints. Itâs not a big enough surprise or plot twistâ. But, letâs talk about this anyways...
First, letâs go back to that magical treehouse in S1, before Bobo tells Waverly she wasnât an Earp: âI used to watch you girls, and Iâd wonder how a man like Ward Earp ended with so much goodness. And then there was the baby. And I used to think about saving her too.â We now know that back when Bobo was Robert Svane, he held on to the idea of âI am a good manâ very strongly. He also seemed to be very religious, believed in guardian angels, and was praying while dying. He was loyal to Wyatt Earp; like Ride or Die-level of loyal, so loyal that he rode with Wyatt and died for (or because of) Wyatt. During this scene, I thought it was interesting (Read: weird) that Bobo says âthe babyâ and âsaving herâ even though he was talking to Waverly. Is there some reason why he didnât just address her directly? Why didnât Bobo say âAnd then there was youâ and âI used to think about saving you tooâ.Â
Second, again in S1E02, Bobo tells a young Waverly â...it had to be an Earpâ to bury the talisman. This could be true. Or, it could be a lie he told to explain why he couldnât be the one to bury it (because he canât step foot on Earp land).
Third, if Bobo did father Waverly and knew about it, would he really have left her with Ward Earp? Or, wouldnât he have just taken Waverly after Wardâs death and hid her away like he hid Willa?
4. Father Juan Carlo: It is my burden. My curse. To survive and witness. Never to decide. We finally learn about JC! He was the one who originally trapped The Widows in the crate. In addition, he was one of the seal keepers and has ties to the origins of the Earp Curse. A priest in Purgatory, he was the one who sent a message to Wyatt (and Doc afterwards?) about Sheriff Clootie.
Since JCâs appearance, the Earpers thought he was an angel or a watcher. Itâs interesting to find out that he was a man of the cloth. Correct me if Iâm wrong, but this episode was the first in which God and religion sort of played a role, or had some type of importance. With JCâs death, there is no more symbolic figure to represent the antithesis of demons (even if JC couldnât necessarily act in any way). Someone now will fill this role, but who? There are some speculation floating around about angel!Waverly (did it replace the angel!Nicole specs?). One (somewhat major? IDK) reason why I donât believe Waverly is at all supernatural is based on what Dominique said during an interview at SDCC2017: âWaverly is the muggle you root forâ. I also think, story-wise, keeping Waverly human is important in regards to highlighting how strong and capable she is and how, if things were different, she would have been the perfect Earp heir. Waverly made the demon possessing her exhausted! If she was supernatural, the thought automatically becomes âOh. She fought off Mictian/Mikshun/The Goo because sheâs (whatever)â. It is more amazing that human, adorable psycho Waverly was able to fight the possession due to her own strength and goodness and will.
âJuan Carlo thinks Wynonnaâs specialâ
I think this came up a few times in the past. We know JC had to tell/suggest the Order to work with Wynonna. Ewan replies along the lines of not wanting to babysit another Earp heir. Plus, why Wynonna? Why now, to interfere and have the heir go through a vision quest to see the past? How is Wynonna different from previous Earp heirs?
Juan Carlo: I was granted immortality like your friend, Doc, along with a few other perks. And some burdens...Iâm not allowed to interfere...But, at this point, Iâm no longer afraid of the consequences.
What exactly were the consequences? It couldnât just be death, because--thatâs boring. We do find out that he has a fatal case of gangrene. I think JC definitely knew Constance was dead and that either way he will die because his disease returned(?) and immortality is off the table.
5. Ewan and the Order: Wynonna, the seals, these arenât our fight. The Order has been tasked to protect the Ghost River Triangle from demons. Period. Itâs not the first time we wondered, then where the hell have you guys been?!? So far, all we know is they hunted and killed everyone who was possessed/infected by Mictian/Mikshun. With their connection to JC, it seems that their purpose is to protect the Triangle from demons trying to get in. They are completely separated from the Earp curse and Clootie demon. So, who formed the Order and who gave them the task and are they completely human?
Ewan: Any word from Black Badge lately?
How did Ewan know about Black Badge? Did he know itâs gone from the Triangle/Purgatory and was taunting Dolls? Is there a connection between BBD and the Order?
6. Doc Holliday, Robert Svane, and Wyatt Earp. The original (love) triangle. The (original) Ghost River Triangle ship.Â
Doc: I have made my peace with Wyatt. Now you can go to Hell. Robert: For Wyatt, I would. I would ride to Hell and back for him if need be. Used to be you would too.
Let me just get this out of the way, Wyatt Earp definitely is the reason why Doc and Robert became the 170-something year old gunslinger and sociopathic revenant in a fuzzy coat we all know. Doc may have been suffering from tuberculosis since he was 14-years-old and may have made a deal with Clootie (which something about it confused me which I will get into later) to prolong his life, but he was put in a well because Wyatt killed Constanceâs sons. Robert was shot by Peacemaker because he was traveling with Wyatt and was used as a human shield by Sheriff Clootie and being Ride or Die (in his case Ride and Die), he sacrificed himself, letting Wyatt shoot through him. However, he didnât know that just condemned him to Hell because of the curse put on Wyatt.
Wyatt Earp, the problematic BFF.
7. Robert Svane and Wynonna Earp. What is their connection?
Wynonna: How can you see me? Robert: I suppose because Iâm dying. Though Iâve caught glimpses of you my entire life.
Words (and hallucinations) of a dying man? I donât think so. Robert does acknowledge that maybe itâs a dying thing, but that does not explain why he has seen Wynonna, or glimpses of her, his entire life. Does this mean Wynonna does more vision quests? If so, then why would it bring her back to Robert?
8. Vision Quest: I have ears, let me hear. I have eyes, let me see. I claim my birthright, I claim my history. A glimpse of the past. Cool. Cool cool cool. But did Wynonnaâs actions affect the timeline?!? From what JC said and from the words of the ritual, she was there merely to observe and watch. But when Robert and Wynonna were both dying, they were able to interact and physically touch. Did Wynonna affect the timeline in anyway through the vision quest? It is possible.
**In the vision quest/past, Robert rang the bell; the bell rang in the past and in the present.**
VISION QUEST DID EFFECT TIMELINE: In the cold open of this episode, Wynonna asks Waverly who pulled her out of the ice and the answer was âYou didâ. But Wynonna has no recollection of it happening and Waverly, to me, looked confused as to why Wynonna even asked. Now maybe my theoretical physics is rusty (Read: non-existent) and my understanding of time-space continuum is through various sci-fi media and Hermioneâs Time Turner, but I think Wynonna doesnât remember because in the past she might have been the one to pull Waverly out but it will not be her past. Confused? I think I confused myself too.
Time, as weâve seen, is a tricky thing when youâre the Earp Heir and when wielding Peacemaker (Remember Hypnos?), which itself is a tricky maybe sentient big-ass gun.Â
Perhaps, pre-vision quest, Waverly really was pulled out of the ice by Wynonna; Wynonna still havenât told Robert the whole âWaverlyâ thing. However, because Peacemaker and its relationship with time and how it affects the Heir tends to get screwed up (Hello accelerated pregnancy!), Wynonna experienced/remembers her past as it happened post-vision quest. That may explain why Waverly suddenly/finally remembers it was Bobo who pulled her out when she revisits the pond/lake at the end of the episode (or was that only revealed to the audience?). Would this then change the dynamic between Bobo and Wynonna, now that heâs back? Because he really should now have realized that his âguardian angelâ was Wynonna (why didnât he in S1 and he really wanted Wynonna dead or maybe this is a new thing cuz because Andras & Co.  basically scrapped their original S2?)
Or is this just the crackiest of all crack speculations? Because Iâm cool with that.
VISION QUEST DID NOT EFFECT TIMELINE: Meaning nothing changed and Waverly just how the fuck did she know?! that it was directly because of Wynonna that Bobo saved her from the water. This just brings a whole other set of problems and gets dark and gloomy when you stop and think about it.
Wynonna gives Bobo the name âWaverlyâ as his angel. That means Bobo was able to befriend and pose as Waverlyâs imaginary friend because he knew her name. Bobo was able to trick young Waverly into burying the talisman so that The Seven could come and attack the homestead causing Wynonna to accidentally shoot and kill Ward while Willa is taken as insurance. Bobo was then able to basically groom Willa, attempt to cross the barrier, Willa opening the gate, causing other demons to enter including Mictian/Mikshun, etc.
In short, by giving Bobo Waverlyâs name, yes it may have saved the youngest Earp when she fell into the ice, but it lead to the series of events which ultimately brought all these things to happen; meaning, Wynonna may have manufactured her own destiny/fate like a super intense, accidental self-fulfilling prophecy. And I donât think Wynonna even thought about the consequences of giving Waverlyâs name, all she heard was Robertâs promise of never hurting his angel.
Isnât that really fucking sad?
9. The Wedding Ring & Doc and his immortality (my confusion).Â
Throughout S1, Docâs overarching story is his thirst for revenge against the Stone Witch, Constance Clootie: She pushed him, leaving him stuck, alive forever at the bottom of a well because his best friend Wyatt Earp killed her two sons. But, at some points during S1 and S2, Doc mentions making a âdeal with the devilâ. Assuming, the deal he made was with Constance to cure him of his tuberculosis, which is also why he and Wyatt had a falling out. But he also sometimes says he was cursed âto live and live and liveâ. Yet, in this episode we find out what makes his ring special.
Constance Clootie: The ring you want? The one that heals the dying and delays death interminably is also my seal.Â
Getting the fact that the ring is a seal out of the way, it apparently heals and pretty much gives immortality. Which begs the question, did Docâs initial deal with Constance just gave him his health and then was just cursed with immortality?
Also, Constance told Juan Carlo and Robert âHide your seal on a holy site and theyâll keep [Sheriff Clootie] locked away foreverâ, but she kept hers on Doc. In a well. That well was not a holy site. And Doc has since been moving around, sure he sort of lives in Shortyâs (a holy site), but still. Is it a plot hole or just a âthe wedding ring is special okay? leave it aloneâ thing?
10. âOnce you look, you canât unsee the resultâ, or the that seems like such a specific and purposeful statement and Iâd like the Nicole Haught backstory for context please, AKA Wayhaught angst. Nicole, you done fucked up. Iâm sure youâve read othersâ posts about it, so I wonât go on and on. Basically, Nicole Haught messed up. Perhaps she was overeager and so sure that Waverly is of course biologically an Earp and that sociopathic revenant is screwing with her, see I knew the results would be--oh shit. Was she wrong to open the mail? Yes. Did she mean to keep the results from Waverly? Of course not. She brought it with her. She planned to give it Waverly. But when she saw how Waverly is struggling to distract herself and could see how much the result would destroy her? Well, hereâs when she acted like the majority of hetero-, male love interests and did something wrong to protect the one they love. Also, this show is full of people deciding for someone else in the name of protection and love. This is a theme throughout every relationship (friendship, familial, romantic, etc) in Wynonna Earp. But, I think this trope/pattern will disappear when everyone is on the same page and when they all work on their communication skills.
Nicole: Like it or not you guys are all kind of in this together...You Earps are a party thatâs tough to crash. Itâs hard not to feel like an outsider, even for me...All Iâm saying is I remember what it feels like to be new.
I know. I am guilty of saying that Nicole was jealous of Rosita. But I donât think Nicole was jealous in a sense that âOh, is Waverly interested in her romantically?â. Nicole was jealous of how easy it was for Rosita to get along with Waverly and essentially, become one of the gang/part of Team Earp. It is clear that she still struggles with belonging, being included. Yes, sheâs in a relationship with Waverly. But while Nicole wants to be (well) all in, I think Waverly wants to keep Nicole separate, not just for protection (initially with the whole BBD un-deputizing), but because Waverly wants something thatâs just hers and relatively untainted by the Earp curse and all that it entails.Â
It also didnât help when Rosita said, â...itâll show Wynonna that weâre here for her, right?â Because with Rositaâs connection with Doc, she is a part of that we. In contrast to when Nicole talks about Wynonnaâs pregnancy, â...you guys are all kind of in this togetherâ. She acknowledges that she has no part to play and when she did âmommy-sitâ in the last episode, Waverly called her asking for âa favorâ. With Wynonnaâs pregnancy now being a huge aspect of the group dynamics and ties them all together, Nicole is again in the periphery. Hopefully she becomes more and more integrated within the group, separate from the title of âWaverlyâs girlfriendâ. I do think it will happen because Kat mentions many in SDCC2017 interviews that the baby brings everyone together and changes their perspective on whatâs truly important.Â
Discussion & (hopefully not-problematic) Discourse
1. âOMG. Rosita & Waverly are definitely gonna fuck. Waverly is gonna cheat on Nicole. What is their ship name gon--â.  Hello. Please calm down. Pause. I get it. Hot people are hot together BUT---
Now, as you may or may not notice this, I like to keep this blog hate-free and as problem-free as possible. Ship who you want! Youâre into Earpcest? You do you, just know that I am slightly judging you, but hey! Iâm not gonna kink-shame. You ship Rosita and Waverly and their ship name is pretty: Roserly. Well, it is a pretty ship name. You low-key ship Wynonna and Nicole? Sure! Why not? That has angst-fest written all over it (haha! Wynaught? Why not? Get it. Do you get it? Do you--Iâm guessing you do). While yes, I do have a bias towards Wayhaught (if you read my tags, youâll know theyâre my OTP of all OTPs), saying Waverly will cheat on Nicole and fuck Rosita is out-of-character and wouldnât add anything to the storyline. Wayhaught is shaping up to be actual!relationship with problems that adding a third person (with her own relationship issues to deal with) would make the narrative/storytelling seem âdrama for the sake of dramaâ.
Waverly would never cheat. Waverly and Champ were together for a long time and itâs canon that he was an unfaithful boyfriend. Youâre telling me that Waverly Earp, voted the âNicest Personâ in Purgatory, would cheat on Nicole Haught  based on attraction/Rosita is hot? Meanwhile, Waverly Earp, who had immediate attraction-at-first-dimpled-smile with Nicole Haught, waited (at least) a few months before breaking up with her longtime cheating-douchebag of a boyfriend. And then, she didnât even jump Nicole the moment after breaking up with Champ. Plus, Waverly did say, âRosieâs so much fun. Iâm really happy for her and Docâ. This is my plea: Please Let Waverly Have A Friend 2K17-18. Chrissy probably decided to leave after the whole poisoning thing and kidnapping Waverly debacle. I want Waverly to have a friend.
Thereâs such thing as too many love triangles. There are people who say âOh. But Emily Andras and love triangles and Lost Girlâ. Youâre using a previous show as an example as to why a show runner would put love triangles. You get a love triangle. Youâre in a love triangle! NO! PLEASE DEAR GOD NO! If anything, that would be why a show runner would be against having a love triangle. Case and point: In an interview, Emily Andras mentioned being against the old love triangle thing, because she has already done it in Lost Girl. But Wynonna and Dolls and Doc! you say...if you think Wyndolliday is a conventional, same old love triangle then please, you must go back and rewatch Lost Girl or think back to the horrible days of Team Jacob/Team Edward. In Wyndolliday, thereâs a lack of âI hate you because we love the same girlâ. Each man respects the otherâs relationship with Wynonna and have an agreement to continue supporting her and to be there for her. This is why there are whispers of âStop being a coward Andras and just have a polyamorous relationshipâ.Â
Haha! Theyâre fighting. Wayhaught is going to break up and Waverly is gonna fuck Rosita. Ok. If you think relationships are all heart-eyes and make outs and snuggling, what Disney Happily Ever After did you step out of? Really. I want to know because life is hard and I want my three wishes from a genie and spontaneously break out into song, complete with back-up singers and dancers.
Relationships are a lot of work. Why do you think the divorce rate is 50% and climbing? There will be fights and disagreements and arguments...and thatâs just how two people, who decide to share their lives with each other (in any capacity), will be able to grow and mature. And for the love of all things holy and unholy, please stop saying Nicole Haught is toxic!!! We do terrible things for people we love. Nicoleâs character is defined by the need to protect and yes! she has a bit of a hero-complex. But doing terrible things for people we love is not the same as doing terrible things TO people we love. By saying Nicole is toxic, I think itâs belittling and diminishing the actions of actual abusers (am I making sense?). By saying abusive relationship! and toxic!, it chips away what an abusive relationship and being toxic means. Calling relationships that are not abusive abusive and calling non-toxic characters/people toxic, it starts to make the words abusive and toxic meaningless and thatâs NOT something that should happen. Did that make sense? Or, am I just opening up myself to hate?
PS. I personally think that if Wayhaught break-up, Nicole will be the one to have a relationship with Rosita, not Waverly (if Rosita is not heterosexual). Based on this episode, Nicole admitted to feeling left out and this seems to be something that she continues to struggle with. If anything, feeling like outsiders is something Rosita and Nicole would bond over and could become a foundation for a relationship (whether it be a friendship or more). Speaking of friendship, as much as I love the Wynaught BrOTP, I want to see a Rosita and Nicole friendship because I want to see who Nicole is outside of the Earp âInner Circleâ. I want to see Rosita and Nicole drinking and complaining about Wynonna. Do I want to see this because I just want it to be a catalyst to jealous!Waverly? Kind of...YES! Okay?! Why do I want to see jealous Waverly? Because if Waverly was ready to blow someoneâs head off with a shotgun for almost sleeping with her chronic-cheater boyfriend, what would she do to someone flirting with Nicole? How would she act?
2. Speaking of the youngest Earp; Waverly âI really should have a therapist because I have major abandonment issues, havenât you noticed?â Earp. At 4, her mother left without any explanation. At 6, she is witness to one sister shooting and killing their dad and the other sister taken, believed dead. Prior, her father never remembered her birthday and she wasnât included in the height chart and her oldest sibling tried to murder her, repeatedly. She then lived with the McCreadyâs but her remaining sister is not a constant presence. Even leaving her at age 18 to go travel the world, while sheâs stays in Purgatory. Her high school boyfriend constantly cheats on her. Her Uncle Curtis who raised her and basically was her father dies when sheâs 21 and the man who gave her a job and was like family also dies.Â
I need Waverly to talk to somebody. Please. Because I need her to be okay.
3. The sadistic part of me wants Waverly to be an Earp, biologically. Unless it has been definitively stated, which it hasnât, the question of Waverlyâs lineage is still unanswered. To be honest, when Bobo told Waverly she wasnât even an Earp, my reaction was âHow the fuck would you know?â. Anyways, being biologically an Earp would go hand in hand with the showâs theme of Found Family.Â
Letâs be real. Sometimes, families just suck and are horrible to each other. No huge hidden family secrets. No conspiracies. Your family just happens to be the one you are born in and just because you share blood/DNA, it doesnât mean you automatically care and love each other.Â
Thus, the reason for Ward being a neglectful father and Willa having so much anger and hatred towards Waverly would be...none; there is no reason. And how heartbreaking and awful would that be? Maybe itâs because Waverly looks very much like their mother and Ward couldnât look at the youngest Earp without being reminded by his wife that left him. Maybe because Willa was jealous that Mama called Waverly âher angelâ while Daddy kept forcing her to practice her shooting...
While I do appreciate it if Waverlyâs origin/lineage is that sheâs adopted (because thereâs not many adoption stories, that I know of), I just think thereâs something honest and dark and real about being hated by the people that are supposed to love you unconditionally.
As usual, Iâm open to discussion, thoughts, opinions, corrections, etc. I honestly didnât do a good job editing, so there could be mistakes.
