Okay so I have never seen that movie and skimming over the plot I was like uh idk how to replicate that, so here’s just a fun little drabble involving the concept of one half of Madney being a hitman.

“Woah, Maddie, this is nice,” Buck laughs, dropping his jaw as he looks her new at her new car, “uh, I know your nursing union went on strike and won better wages, but please tell me you can actually afford this?”

She wants to roll her eyes because really, it’s not that expensive of a car. It’s an orange 2018 Kia Soul, not a mustang. But he does have a point, because he’s under the impression that nursing is her only source of income and she also has a kid to feed without the help of a husband.

Her husband’s dead, but that case wasn’t actually her own doing. That was a textbook case of suicide by cop and she felt sorry for the cop who had to shoot him, but over all? Not really a thing she would change about the situation. Both her and their daughter are better off with that abusive asshole buried in the ground.

What Buck doesn’t know-- and what he can never know-- is that she didn’t kill her abusive husband, but she makes a liiiiiiiiiiiittle bit of money on the side killing other women’s abusive husbands. Is it illegal? Yes. Could it land her in jail? She’s extremely careful, but yes.

But is it a public service? In her eyes, yes. She sleeps just fine at night unless her one and a half year old daughter wakes her up.

Hiding it from Buck is one thing, but the thought of her daughter having questions about the odd hours she “works” sometimes when she’s old enough to understand that mommy is gone at strange times does worry her. Harley doesn’t talk yet, other than the words “mama” and “milk,” and she’s not cognizant enough to see the incongruencies in how much income her mother makes the way her uncle does. But one day? Maddie doesn’t know how she’ll keep it a secret from someone she lives in the same house with who is old enough to start asking questions.

She’ll quit before then, she tells herself. And she does plan on only riding this out for a few more years, but still, she’s a single mom and Harley might want to go to college someday... Doug controlled their money and had wasted all of it on booze and gambling so it’s not like she inherited a mountain of cash when he died...

Her brother is looking at her, confused and concerned and she shakes the thoughts out of her mind as she realizes she never replied to him.

“Yeah, of course I can afford it, Evan,” she replies with an eye roll, “I have a kid to support, I can’t afford to make reckless decisions with my money. I’m not Doug.”

“I know you’re not,” Buck says quickly, putting his hands up in surrender, “I’m just surprised, is all. Your last car was still working pretty well.”

“I’m an adult, Buck,” she smiles, “and it was still working, yes, but God knows for how much longer. I wanted to bite the bullet and get something new before my old car broke down and stopped working. I had that car since I was 16, I’m 30 now so it’s a miracle it still worked but I was only driving it on borrowed time.”

“That’s fair,” he shrugs, “you just didn’t tell me you were looking for a new car.”

“Do I have to give you notice of all my impending purchases?” she asks, raising her eyebrow and she doesn’t mean to get too defensive, it’s just that when Buck questions her financial decision all she can think about is what might happen if he gets suspicious and tries to dig a little deeper than the lies she tells him...

“No, I’m sorry,” he shakes his head, and the relief runs through her like water down a stream, “I just get a little protective sometimes.”

“I get that,” she nods, smiling as she puts a hand on his shoulder, “but I’m okay now, really. Harley and I are fine, we have plenty of money to take care of ourselves, and Doug is out of the picture.”

“And thank God he is.”

“Trust me, I feel the same way,” she laughs, “Now. Stop staring at my new mom car and get in your own car to get to work before you’re late. Ogling your big sister’s latest purpose probably isn’t going to be a good enough excuse for your boss, especially since you’ve only just started your period of probationary times as a firefighter.”

“Got it, on my way. Give Harley a kiss for me!”

“Always,” she grins, waiting for her brother to pull out of the parking lot before she pulls out her cellphone.

Wrong cellphone, she realizes, putting it back in her pocket before reaching into another pocket to pull out her disposable cellphone.

She’s got a job to do sometime within the next few weeks, and she hadn’t felt comfortable doing her research at the car dealership, so she needs to start to catch up now before her hospital shift starts later.

The initial conversations of course don’t include legal names, but she’s figured out who this woman whose husband needs killing’s name actually is. She always does. Creativity and analyzation off the smallest details is what makes her so good at what she does.

Her name is Tatiana, Tatiana Robert. She’s unmarried but this month’s abusive piece of trash to eliminate is her boyfriend, and his name is...

Wait a minute, that sounds familiar. Where does she know the name Howard Han from? Well, maybe she’s just being paranoid; living a double life will do that you. Still, she can’t help but type his name in on Facebook, and look for the first name who has “Los Angeles” as their location. She curiously clicks on his profile picture, and his profile is private so that’s really all the information she has on him, but it’s more than enough.

Beth flicks through the binder in her arms, struggling to get to the right page while she’s walking across the dealership floor, her secretary, Nora, on her heels. She probably should upgrade to the iPad too, she thinks, eyeing off Nora’s easy step with the thin, lean weight of the tablet, but it’s got all those buttons, and last time Beth had borrowed Annie’s, she accidentally deleted stuff, and just - - she likes paper, likes the physicality of it, even if she does feel like she’s about to break her wrists lugging this thing around.

She licks her finger, finding the right page, eyes darting as she reads it.

“We could probably get another five in? But only if he can promise at least one of those is already a guaranteed sale. They’re just too big to keep on the lot longterm right now,” Beth tells her, and Nora nods, agreeing, making a quick note.

“He seems pretty sure, but I’ll doublecheck.”

Giving her a quick thank you, Beth keeps walking back towards her office, glancing over at where the dealership is alive with energy, customers pouring into almost every corner, the laughter of children sounding loud from the childcare corner, and god, Beth can’t quite bite back the grin. The weekend sale had been fairly impromptu. Rio had suddenly needed the space for more of his (their) cars – not just ones full of pharmaceuticals, but a few extras with wrapping paper rolls of fake money stored in the car walls, and he’d told Beth to do what she had to.

So she had.

It had been a big job, working out the sales margins, organising staff, even bringing on a new marketing coordinator to help the manager send out a flurry of sales ads – online, on TV and in flyer drops, but all in all, it was going well. It had helped, of course, to have Annie and Ruby on site to talk up the family cars, and to have her kids at Dean’s, Marcus at Laura’s, to make her feel less guilty about letting this whole thing eat up her last two weekends.

Still, she thinks, frowning, even with the late nights she was pulling to empty the lot as legally as possible, she’d been getting home before Rio. Last night had been the worst of it. It had been almost midnight after all before she’d dragged herself in the door to find the house empty, and she’d been woken sometime around three to him collapsing into bed beside her. The fact of which perhaps wouldn’t be that unusual if she hadn’t hit snooze on her alarm clock at six to find him already gone.

Biting her lip, she closes the binder in her arms, trying to refocus on Nora beside her, who’s chattering away about the cars they’ve sold so far.

“I’m so sorry,” Beth says, yanking a sheet of paper out from her binder and uncapping the pen hooked in the front of it. “I was a million miles away. Would you mind running through that again?”

Nora nods enthusiastically, unoffended, starting again from the top, and Beth starts scribbling the math down onto the sheet of paper, using the binder as a makeshift desk, when suddenly her phone starts vibrating in the back pocket of her slacks.

“Jeez,” she says, fumbling a little, and Nora’s trying to help her with the binder, but Beth doesn’t quite want to let it go, so she just sort of one-arms it, finally yanking her phone out and blinking slightly when she sees Rio’s personal number blear up on the screen. She glances back at Nora.

“I’ve got to take this,” she says apologetically, and Nora nods, letting Beth stride off down the lot, hooking her phone between her ear and her shoulder as she awkwardly manoeuvrers the binder and pushes back into her office.

“Hi,” she answers, a little breathless after all the shuffling, and her first thought is that he must be calling for dinner. If it was work related, he’d have called the work line after all, and as soon as the thought hits, Beth’s stomach grumbles. God, did she even have breakfast this morning? She knows she’s skipped lunch.

“’ey, you free?”

Maybe she can get him to bring her food from that Balinese restaurant he’d taken her to last month – maybe Nasi Ayam or those soy cake thingies or both. She practically moans at the thought.

“Right now?” she asks instead, offloading her binder onto her desk and briefly kicking off her pumps. She massages one foot with her free hand, and then the other. As tempting as the possibility of eating right now is, she’s got too much to do to slow down any time soon. “I think we need to get your memory checked. Remember how you needed me to empty the – ”

(it wasn’t. died soon after arriving in Albany.) still, for 15 years it drove me all over town, gear and otherwise. the point is, again, i never bought one of these myself. i never had to. i was terrified of the expense, the responsibility, the insurance, the threat of getting smacked up in traffic. but now, with Social Security to handle the monthlies, i own this thing, this car, this object of which i am so fond. oddly it is as if i am in some over the top, obsessive romantic relationship with a ‘thing’, an inanimate. i talk to it as i approach (clicking open the door from 20 feet away): ‘hi’. when i leave i say goodbye. when i start to meditate i ‘see’ it, the face of my beloved, a misty vision inside my head. it is my friend, my easy lover, my favorite dog. it even looks like someone i know with it’s snub, bug’s nose. i caress the hood, the dash, the hound’s tooth upholstery. everything on it works — the windows, the doors, the gas cap, the sun roof, the electronically adjusted side mirrors and the hazards (which i forget to shut off and rush back to correct). every design choice pleases my snooty aesthetic eye as if delivered in some rare Nirvana cloud by a beloved guru. it is So Quiet with the windows up you can’t hear the engine idle at a stop light. there are so many instrument panel buttons i lose focus trying to make adjustments on the radio/cd/Sirius player. the AC kicks in like arctic snow. i can, if i want to, open the gas cap without leaving the driver’s seat. (the GrandAm required a screwdriver.) the mileage is green — 24 city, 32 highway. the front window is so wrap around huge it’s as if i’m in a diving bell with a 360 panorama, an Avatar in a 3-D future. in the rain the wipers, front and back, work seamlessly with no scars across the glass. an endlessly gorgeous tingling sensation has every trip i drive feel brand new, like a pot high and each regular journey a first time kiss. i don’t know when i’m going to tire of this, if ever. i wish my mum could have seen it, she would have loved it, beaming and posture erect in the passenger seat, proud of me for making such a brave, wise choice. i can’t take full credit. my room mate’s girlfriend posed as my wife. she did her hair up special and wore a fuck-you, just-try-to- impress-me look to ward off any hard core salesman. in the meantime she’d already chosen the KIA on line, pricing and comparing the other models i checked out, the Chevy HHR and the Honda Element. we looked at all three on Motor Mile. the Element was four-square awesome. it’s all-plastic interior can be hosed down without spoiling. it’s salesperson was a sweet, wet-lipped, mumbler who was the exact opposite of the sleaze bag hotshot Music Man type we expected. it was as if he tried to not sell the car. we liked him. my ‘wife’ liked him. but the Element, as fab as it was, was ultimately 4G’s more expensive than the KIA with way worse mileage. the HHR guy couldn’t have given a shit. his shop was greasy and no one there seemed to want to sell anything to anybody. the car looked cool on the outside, but was claustrophobic to drive and the steering had a squooshy, no-control feel. we saw the KIA last at a small mom n pop dealership. we test drove a 2010 red, but i was not, under any circumstances, going to buy a red car and meanwhile the salesman was a shark, but so obviously so that we laughed him off. the only available not-red was a the hamster green 2011 loaded (the only ‘Soul’ on the lot). i had sworn up and down that the one thing i would not do was buy that same day. we were just looking, period. i’d brought the ‘wife’ along to make sure i kept my promise. but the shark showed his teeth and offered an awesome deal and wife whispered that it was too good to pass up and so fuck it, i bought it on the spot and strangely without a shred of buyer’s remorse. i drive it like a little old lady terrified she’s gonna hit something or get hit. eek! i take it all the way out to Watertown to my favorite car wash so it can be sprayed with protective goo. i pluck something as small as a single pine needle off the floor mat and flick it out the window like a booger. i guess it’s the American thing, a dude and his car, except that this one’s Korean, smallish with no leather ball sack under the rear axel and can be disses as, well, in the vernacular, ‘gay’. but so the fuck what! i’m in love and when that happens no one can tell you different. my plan, my hope is to drive it as long as i did the GrandAm at which point i’ll be 80 years old and they’ll want me the fuck off the road. i will fight whomever tries to do that with brick-in-purse as i hit the gas and crash it through a store front window.

Yesterday marked the end of an era for our family. We finally let go of the minivan that's been our go-to vehicle since February 2005 (near as we can figure), donating it to Wheels For Wishes that benefits the Make A Wish Foundation.

The minivan to which we bade our farewell is a 2002 Kia Sedona that marked a huge change in how we operated as a family back in the day. Definitely the need for it reflected the reality that we were hauling more. More kids. More stuff.

Years before we bought the minivan, we were at Carter Suburu with our favorite ever salesperson who, whilst attempting to determine what it was we needed, asked

“What about a minivan?”

Whoops.

You see Kimmer... was not a soccer mom. And she told him so in no uncertain terms. So our salesperson quickly moved on, finally setting us up with a previously owned Suburu Impreza that fit the bill functionally and financially just then.

But yeah. That moment of “I am not a soccer mom.”

Classic... car as personal identity.

As we both got older, though, we became involved more and more and more and more with youth groups. Of course as Linzy moved through Jr. High and High School, we became involved more and more and more and more with driving she and her friends around. And as we settled into the groove of maintaining and improving our home we became involved more and more and more and more with Loews, Home Depot, and the local dump ‘n recycling center.

And so on.

So one day we’re looking around dealerships on 99 when we find it. A few years old, previously owned.

Right away we left and I called my dad cause he’s the best negotiator I know. I told him what the vehicle was and how much we could spend. He was basically no problem, did a little research, then headed up to meet us at the dealership.

So we’re sitting down with the salesperson and, very coolly and quickly, my dad lays out his knowledge of which local dealerships have comparable vehicles and for how much those vehicles are being sold. He also knew what the dealership most likely paid for the one we were looking at.

Back ‘n forth and back ‘n forth they went until the salesperson hit our number.

I’m pretty sure I reacted physically in such a way as to indicate BINGO! So that’s what we bought the van for.

My dad was kinda of bummed I gave up the number like that.

He was pretty sure he was gonna get a lower price.

Still, we were stoked. And that van ended up being just what we needed right at the time we needed it.

Now the highlights of our life with our Kia Sedona minivan are well-documented across my facebook years. There are a few, though, I’ll mention here:

The first is an undocumented memory of that one time we had three teenagers in the way back seats headbanging to the beat of this song cranked up pretty high.

The van was rocking more than I woulda guessed—these were young but very BIG kids—and I suspect it’s our own good fortune that their enthusiasm didn’t roll the van.

Another memory that comes to mind was our trip to a youth summer camp in Eastern Washington, the van packed all the way up and side to side with medical and video gear.

Now when we bought it, the van came with a DVD player under the driver’s seat with a small screen that folded down from the ceiling in front of the second row of seats. The sound was routed through the van’s radio to its sound system.

We never used it but for going to camp. And the first time we did we played that movie Saved! with Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Patrick Fugit, and Mary-Louise Parker. The movie was such a hit for us (especially Kimmer ‘n Linzy sitting in the second row) that it became our tradition driving to camp each year.

Another memory that popped forward was that time we had a bunch of dressed-up teens down on the Seattle waterfront for a birthday party. Some of those had come in a car that was parked up above on first avenue, the rest came in the minivan. After the party, when things were good and dark and late... in order to get some of the kids back to their car, Kimmer had to do a clever Tetris-ing of human beings into the van.

And last but not least, a shout out to our friend, Shey, for that time we were driving back from a memorial service at Evergreen Washelli when, upon making a left turn, the sliding door on the passenger side nearly came off. Almost came off. As in when I stopped, got out to have a look, the thing was open and just kind of hanging there barely above the ground.

Gah.

Right at that moment, however, to our rescue came our friend, Shey, who stopped, whipped out a roll of silver duct tape and duct taped it back on.

One more time: she duct taped it back on.

She duct taped the passenger side sliding door, firmly holding it shut.

It stayed that way for weeks until we could get a mechanic to give it a fix.

Funniest thing I ever saw, that duct tape around the edges of the door. It always reminded me of the slind holding Jacob Marley’s jaw to the rest of his head in A Christmas Carol.

Anyway.

Good times. Fun times. Awkward times. Super productive times.

Truly. The end of an era.

So we lift our goblets to our Kia Sedona. Of to (hopefully) help out some family that could sure use some help.

Europe and the U.S. Share a Lot, Except When It Comes to Cars

The 2020 Geneva International Motor Show is over before it began. A victim of Covid-19, manufacturers have retooled to unveil new releases “digitally.” We Americans may shrug our shoulders because unlike viruses, many European cars and brands can’t cross continents.Sure, the new Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Mercedes E-Class that were scheduled to debut on the Geneva show floor will be coming to America, as will the BMW i4 electric sedan that was to be shown as a concept. But the new Seat Leon hatchback and Renault Captur Hybrid will be no-shows here in the United States. There are many reasons there will be no Dacia Dusters in Delaware driveways.First off, Americans are not starved for choices. As the second-largest automotive market in the world after China, the United States has dozens of brands to browse.“As attractive as the U.S. market is, it’s saturated,” said Stephanie Brinley, principal analyst for IHS Markit. “In the States, consumers are confused with all of the choices; it can be overwhelming.”True enough. In the past 25 years or so, Suzuki, Daewoo and Daihatsu have left our shores. Scion, Geo, Saab, Eagle, Plymouth, Mercury, Saturn, Pontiac and Oldsmobile have joined Studebaker on that great off ramp.For some European brands, coming to the United States means new dealerships and parts distribution. That’s expensive. Vehicles must pass our government emissions, safety and lighting requirements. That’s very expensive. And how does a company market an expensive product to consumers who are loyal to existing brands? That’s bottomless-money-pit expensive.Even with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ existing network of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep franchisees, it has struggled to get Americans to fully embrace the Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands. A newcomer to the U.S. market would need a Caddy full of euros to introduce a brand. And by Caddy, I mean the Volkswagen Caddy, which is a small van used for deliveries and family hauling. And no, we don’t get it either.People of each continent use their vehicles differently. “Americans like large vehicles and S.U.V.s that do 100 percent of everything,” Ms. Brinley of IHS said. “We plan for the most extreme-use case, while Europeans are more comfortable squeezing things into a small space.”While traveling in Slovenia recently, I met the musician and Wudisban Records executive Marko Kocjan, known as Emkej, who drives a Skoda Octavia wagon, a VW product the size of the Golf SportWagen (that just left our market because of sluggish sales). In Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Octavia is a popular, though larger, choice.“Me and my fiancée, Ajda Perme, came to the conclusion we needed a safer car and wanted extra room in the back for snowboarding and transporting music equipment to concerts. I love its space.”American musicians would probably find the Octavia wagon far too small to haul keyboards, guitars, drums and amps. But like many European buyers, Mr. Kocjan makes the Skoda work.“It is a car we can afford, plus the tax rate and fuel costs are in our range,” he said.Many European countries tax vehicles on size, weight, engine size and fuel consumption at a far higher rate than our states.So while there’s a more powerful 2-liter engine, Mr. Kocjan’s Octavia is driven by the smaller, more efficient 1.6-liter diesel with a five-speed manual transmission (rowing your own gears is much more popular in Europe).Americans would find that powertrain pokey and inconvenient. And even though VW makes the midsize pickup Amarok, it’s not sold in our truck-loving country.And then there’s design. In the home of the brave, we’re timid when it comes to styling.Our roads are crammed with Honda Accords, Toyota Camrys and Nissan Rogues that roll with safe designs.We would rather be seen in a Pontiac Aztek than the Fiat Multipla, which is best described as the only transportation device with a muffin top. A Citroën Berlingo would be roomy enough for our market, but the sheet metal would probably be ostracized.Europeans are often willing to try different things, like the old three-wheeled BMW Isetta and Reliant Robin. The elfin Smart car made a noble stab at our market, but is leaving it while remaining in Europe. The oddly cladded flanks of Citroen’s C4 Cactus crossover would probably not generate much U.S. interest.We don’t see Vauxhall or Opel cars circling cul-de-sacs, but the best of Europe’s automotive industries have influenced our cars in many ways. Volvo and Saab pioneered many safety technologies we now take for granted. BMW fundamentally changed the way cars performed with firm but comfortable suspensions.It forced Cadillac (which has a minor presence overseas) to abandon its soft floaty ride for a much crisper dynamic. Americans wouldn’t rule out Peugeots or Skodas because of the way they drive. On my last visit to Europe, I enjoyed the dynamics of a rental Renault Clio. The small four-door hatchback was comfortable on the highway and attacked curves with spunk. The small engine did not pack much punch, but I appreciated its efficiency after pulling into gas stations with fuel prices at $1.45 a liter. Yeah, remember, there are nearly four of those in a gallon.It’s human nature to desire forbidden fruit, but maybe it’s best we stick to what we have. Automakers know their markets very well.Mr. Kocjan of Slovenia said: “I wanted a Cadillac Escalade when I was a kid, but now I see how big they are and I don’t know. I would love to have a Mustang … for a few days.”Years ago, an Opel Insignia wagon cruising through Rome caught my wife’s eye. She was tempted to buy when the stylish machine ended up stateside rebadged as the Buick Regal TourX, but she did not pull the trigger. In Cars, Part One

Like a lot of kids, I didn’t get my own car when I turned 16.

My older brother got one. He got an old, even for 1990, Chevy Malibu. It wasn’t a great car, but it was a car, that ran, that up to 6 teenagers could fit in, so it was pretty great anyway.

When I turned 16 a year and a half later, my parents said I could use his car, and mom’s car, and if I need to, the Chieftan.

I mostly had to share mom’s car, a 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88. But sometimes, if all the other cars were in use, I got to drive the 1955 Pontiac Chieftan, which my parents had lovingly restored themselves a few years earlier. It didn’t have power steering, or AC, or great breaks or... seatbelts. The radio only worked some of the time and only on the strongest signals. But it sure as hell looked cool to drive. Sometimes I even got to drive it to school, and boys who otherwise wouldn’t know I existed would crowd around the car and ask to see under the hood.

Best memory: Waking up late for my SAT’s, having a bowl of ice cream for breakfast because we were out of just about everything I could quickly eat, and driving to the other side of town way, way over what speed dad told me it would be OK to drive to make it there on time. I walked in with seconds to spare.

When I went off to college, my grandma gifted me her 1985 Cutlass Sierra. She’d named it Pierre, and naming the cars I loved became sort of a thing with me. It also didn’t have (working) AC, and had questionable power steering and only a working radio but no tape deck, but I mean, it was mine. I usually kept my jambox in the passenger’s side seat to actually listen to music I wanted to listen to, and with most of my college friends not having any car at all, it was way better than nothing.

Best Memory: there was some dumb legend in a town nearby the college about a ghost out on some road and if you flashed your car lights the ghost would flash back. It was something to do, so many nights I’d load up the car with friends and drive out there, hang out and talk, just to have something to do.

The college I went to for my freshman year was a private school, and crazy expensive. My parents told me that if I came home and went to UTEP, that they’d buy me my own, decent car. With AC. And a tape deck.

Ever since Saturns had been introduced a few years earlier, I really wanted a Saturn, more than anything else. I knew it was out of reach for awhile, but once the idea of having my own car was planted, I held my breath and dutifully test drove many cars my parents suggested until I broached the idea of a Saturn. They were sure it’d be too expensive to get a new one, and we hadn’t seen any used ones that whole time, but really, to humor me, we went to the Saturn dealership.

The lowest-end model was just at the top of the price range they were willing to spend. But there was a hitch. It only came in standard. I didn’t know how to drive standard.

The sales guy had been keeping an eye on my face, though I had been trying really hard not to beg and look too hopeful, and threw a set of keys to my mom.

“Take this one home overnight. Teach her to drive standard on it. If she learns, and you like it, when you bring it back tomorrow we’ll talk.”

So I drove my mom’s car home while she drove a 1994 blue-black Saturn SL to our house. Once I was parked, I hopped in the driver’s side of the Saturn and my mom explained how to use the clutch and gear shifter. We did a few practice runs with air-pedals and then started the car.

I couldn’t get it to go. It stalled out every time. Three or four times, until I noticed the shit-eating grin on mom’s face.

“What?” I asked.

“Check the gear shift. It’s in third.”

“I don’t know what that means.”

“You want to start it in neutral.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this before!?!”

“Because now you’ll never make this mistake again.”

She was right, I didn’t.

Within about 20 minutes I was driving stick shift like I’d been doing it since birth. I quickly learned that I loved driving a standard car.

The next day, the car was mine.

It had AC, and a tape deck with the upgraded stereo system and absolutely no more other non-standard features.

My grandma was sad to see the Sierra go, for real this time.

I LOVED that Saturn. So much. It was my favorite thing. I washed it three times a week, I always offered to drive. I learned to change the oil. I treated it with loving care for several years. I moved to Dallas in that car, after filling it up with most of my worldly possessions.

I named it Nicholas James Kenneth Zacary Nolan (because of the letters and numbers on the license plate), but just called him Nicky.

Best memories out of many, many:

1) In college, realizing that a guy who I knew liked me, who I’d only been thinking of as a friend for awhile, was a really awesome person and I should give him a shot, after all our friends arranged for us to drive back from a camping trip alone. We talked, and laughed, and he fell asleep for awhile, and I looked over at him and my heart leaped and I just thought. “Oh. I’m dumb. He’s great. Let’s give this a shot.” A few weeks later, we were together, and he’s the one who got away. (That’s way too long of a story here.)

2) Teaching my friend Stephen how to drive standard in that car. He was doing great, but then he lost his footing, the car rolled forward out of a parking lot, into a street and came within inches of smashing into a parked car. Stopped juuuust in time, and we still have a good laugh about how horrible that would have been.

I drove that car for like 7 years and 100k miles before too many things started going wrong with it (Saturns, especially earlier models, were not known for their reliability). I had, luckily, by then gotten a decent job, and once my parents agreed, I went and traded it in one night for not a lot of money, and got a green 2002 or something Kia Spectra.

Ah yes, the Kia Spectra. That certainly was a car. I recall how it had gray interior and uh... oh a sunglasses cubby hole in the ceiling and uh... how it did have air conditioning and a tape deck, even though cars were starting to have CD players by then.

Look, I barely remember that thing. I had it for like, idk 2 or 3 years. I couldn’t go over 70 in it. It was a standard. It ran well while I had it. I got out before it wasn’t running so well. Early Kias were also not know for reliability. I hear they’re way better now.

Best memory: Uh, that was the car I had when I bought my house. So.... that, I guess? God, I have practically blocked that thing out. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t notable, in any way. I think the only picture I have of it is really a picture of the garage while the car happened to be parked in it.

Part two, wherein I fall in love all over again, tragedy strikes, and many years of mediocrity happen before a triumphant finale (for now).

The Car as Religion, Part Two

I’ve learned, since then, that in acquiring what I bought next I did literally everything you’re not supposed to do when buying a car short of walking in screaming “shut up and take my money.” I left with a car I didn’t have the title to. I bought the car in the rain, at night, after meeting the guy in a weird back alley parking lot, didn’t care when he acted like a private seller but I had to pay “dealer’s fees” and taxes through his dealership suddenly at the end - I negotiated the fees away instead of realizing how huge a red flag someone pretending to be a private seller was. I was in love - this was an E39 BMW 540i MSport. There was no WAY it was worth trading for my RX-8 so of course I was in love with the deal.

Until I got the car on the highway and realized something was really wrong. It was fine at slow speeds, but it was pulling hard to the right at highway speeds (not being allowed to take it on the highway should have been another, giant red flag.) I took it to a decent mechanic and discovered that the car had clearly been in a really bad accident. The suspension on the right side had been replaced with really cheap, terribly fitting parts. And that wasn’t all - the clutch on the fan was gone, and replacing it required taking off basically most of the front of the car. The computer that controlled everything in the car was damaged, so we had no traction control, no ABS, and the engine, despite running fine when I bought it, had continuously run rougher and rougher. We ended up selling the BMW for way less than it had been listed for, and bought a Kia Soul. I thought this was going to be the end of my car days. What kind of fun can you have with a Kia?

Well, a lot, actually. You can fill it with a lot when you want to move things. It handled surprisingly well, and though it didn’t make the same fun noises as my previous cars, it was a joy to drive. And it’s snicky little stick shift made up for it’s less than impressive dynamics. I unlearned a lot of pretension I had around cars from driving that for as long as I did.

And now we’re here. A lot has changed. I’m no longer married. I no longer have that car. I no longer have any car at this point - actually, that’s been a big thing. Cars are not just a way of getting around for me. There a way of focusing. A way of meditating on the world and getting lost from the universe for a few hours. It’s something that I miss, terribly.

And I’m coming back to my temple.

My New Year’s resolution was simple: I’m getting a car I can care about. Both for financial reasons and because I want this to be a labor of love and something I get to learn a bunch of different things with. This is going to be a project car through and through. I’m going to do the following:

Buy a car that costs less than a grand. This car is going to be the project I’m going to be working on, and has to be something I can get excited about. This could be a number of different things, depending on what happens to be available. Probably going to be a Honda because of their flexible engine platforms that lead to easier swaps, though there’s a chance it might be something with a flatter engine and 4WD, or something older and german and hatchback. We’ll see what we can find!

Getting the basics working, doing all of the work myself. Requirements:

Goes, turns, and stops on it’s own.

Does all of those things reliably

A non-horrendous interior

A decent looking exterior, with the understanding that it most certainly is not going to be a show car - at least, not in the traditional sense.

Have a plan for going forward for something fun. Motor swap, turbo, supercharger, NOS … something to make it interesting and fun and quick. Doesn’t have to be a world beater, just has to be something that can be enjoyed.

That’s the plan. I need to be reborn. I can’t wait to get started. I might put a poll up on here for people to vote on what the next project is going to end up being.

With car dealerships closed, discounts on new and used cars are popping up online

It’s not a good time to do much right now, but experts say if you are looking for a new car — and feeling confident about your finances — it’s actually a great time to land a deal.

While car buying normally includes trips to a dealer’s lot, test drives and a mechanic’s second opinion on a used car, these are not normal times.

Shelter in place orders and social-distancing rules make it difficult to shop around a dealer’s show room, let alone hop in a car with a salesperson.

America’s economic uncertainty makes it even tougher for consumers to plan for a big-ticket purchase like a car: 26 million people have lost their jobs in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, and one-quarter of Americans are bracing to lose their jobs as well.

“ New car sales were down 59% last week, year over year and used car sales were down 53%, according to one estimate. ”

Those are strong headwinds against buying any vehicle right now, new or used. New car sales were 59% lower last week than they were one year ago and used car sales were down 53%, according to Cox Automotive, the parent company of brands like Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader.

So anyone inclined to shop around should know car makers and dealers are motivated to sell — and it shows.

Car makers like GM GM, +1.99%, Hyundai HYMTF, -7.00%, Fiat Chrysler FCAU, +0.75% and others are offering highly attractive financing, as in, no interest paid for the life of the loan. (More on that, below.) Furthermore, many dealers and car-selling web platforms are trying to get customers as close as they can to the vehicles without face-to-face interaction.

“If you have the wherewithal to afford a new vehicle, there so many great deals,” said AAA Northeast spokesman Robert Sinclair.

So where are the deals?

Many companies are offering 0% financing, which means a buyer is only paying principal during the loan’s six or seven-year term.

For example, Chevrolet GM, +1.99% has 0% financing for 84 months, with one caveat, for “very well qualified buyers” on most 2019 models and 2020 Equinox, Silverado 1500 and Trax models. It will also let buyers defer monthly payments for four months. Buyers have to make the deal by the end of the month.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the makers of Jeep, Dodge, Ram and others, also has a 0%, 84-month offer on certain 2019 and 2020 vehicles. “Chrysler Capital is the bank that determines if the consumer qualifies based on a variety of factors,” a spokesman said. The offer expires the end of the month.

Kia has a 0% for 75 months on certain models too, as well as Hyundai also has a no-interest 84-month offer and deferred payments for four months.

“Generally, to qualify for our long term 0% for 72 or 84 months you need to have above a 700 FICO FICO, -0.73% core. Current Hyundai owner loyalty benefits also apply,” a spokesman said. Buyers need to sign the contract by May 4.

For perspective, new auto loan rates were between 5% and 6% as of the 2019’s fourth quarter, according to Federal Reserve data.

Karl Brauer, Kelley Blue Book’s executive publisher, told MarketWatch he’s never such a seen a wide variety of no-interest loans with deferred payments.

He’s seen 0% financing before, but it’s usually for one-off special offers. It’s also common to see to deferred payment deals, but Brauer is wary because interest can still accrue. But that’s not the case here either, he said.

“ The 0% interest offer means customers could avoid paying between $3,000 and $5,000 in interest, according to one estimate. ”

Remember, the 0% financing isn’t open to everyone, and it’s still an offer on a pricier, more recent model. (The zero-interest offer terms aren’t negotiable, but the underlying dealer prices can be, car makers told MarketWatch.)

If buyers don’t qualify for the 0% offer or want to spend even less, Brauer said they can find some great deals in the leftover 2018 and 2019 models that a dealer will want to unload.

The “leftovers are really hard to sell when the brand new models have such aggressive deals,” he said. “The dealer should want to be able get rid of that car fairy aggressively.”

How can I buy a car without seeing it?

Car dealerships and auto repair operations are “essential workers,” according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security. That federal guidance helps states tailor their own decisions on who is and isn’t an essential worker that’s able to step out their door for work each day.
