So I’ve had… a weird few days. I have my first ever dressage competition next week that I am not ready for at all. I’ve been having weird and confusing symptoms that I am terrified to investigate. We’re moving house soon and a part of me really doesn’t want to. And a random man, a farmer, my boss’s neighbour whom I’ve never met, wants me to work for him. Milking cows. (My experience with cows is limited to looking at them from a distance.)

My dad told me today that my cousin in law (cousin of my cousins on their other side) had a terrible horse accident and died and today is his funeral. He was my age. Wtf

what if I posted an incredibly niche ethubs plot idea every day this week? what then?

well here is historical horse boy extravaganza:

the year is 1897. etho, a wealthy new york merchant's son, is returning home after a year abroad spent studying classical dressage at the spanish riding school. etho has always been obsessed with the classics, finding beauty in simplicity, form clearly echoing function. aboard the first class of the hypermodern ship lucania, surrounded by victorian sumptuousness, he feels trapped.

one other man in the first class cabin stands out. he has a drawling accent, wears a hat to dinner, and is usually surrounded by a gaggle of well-heeled men who treat him more like a zoo exhibit than a human being. etho learns that his name is bdubs, and that he's one of the last cowboys-- or at least that's how he was billed while headlining a european rodeo tour. bdubs is also on his way home, to an uncertain future. in this rapidly developing world, his skills as a cowboy are now only useful as a novelty.

etho is immediately drawn to him, and despite their class differences they quickly realize that they both long for the same thing-- freedom. oh and they both loooOOOVE horsies.

the charlotte dujardin scandal is so fascinating. there are so many people feeling betrayed by her bc they thought charlotte was "one of the good ones." but to me this response just demonstrates how much animal abuse is normalized in modern dressage (and many equestrian disciplines).

i have never once seen her ride in a manner that is good for the horse. not to be all like "i saw this coming" but i thought it was pretty obvious she didn't give a shit about horse welfare, simply based on how she rode in the ring. anyone who is genuinely surprised that she would whip a horse like that needs to read up on equine biodynamics and behavior. was she the worst in the industry? no, of course not. there are people still doing rollkur. and i suppose by that measure she was "one of the good ones." but she has consistently kept her horses behind the vertical, hollow-backed, on the forehand in the dressage ring in front of the world, and that sends a pretty clear message to me that she doesn't know what she's doing and/or doesn't care about horses. if she did, she would have used her platform to speak up for horses rather than conforming to modern trends. she has never been a kind rider.
