legiterally can’t remember if you’ve ever posted omegaverse talk so if you actually hate a/b/o ignore this buuuut…. alpha ghost with a beta reader that he drugs with an aphrodisiac to convince them they’re really an omega late bloomer :/
a good chunk of my fics on ao3 are omegaverse lmao don’t worry (I haven’t yet written one for cod, idk if that’ll ever change because I have soooo many cod ideas that I don’t know if I’ll ever get to omegaverse stuff)
I do also love a good old fashioned actual late bloomer omega!reader 😵‍💫 and something about being around Ghost and his pungent alpha stink inevitably throws you into your first heat. Also, this is kind of similar to my other beta!reader idea where Ghost is convinced you’re an omega and treats you like one despite looking nothing like an omega and having the paperwork and everything to prove it. Truly an unstoppable force of a man.

Love THat yr a poetry girl going through a nuclear physics phase bc I am too… that being said do u have any reading recs
LEGITERALLY hate the false dichotomy between science and the arts. physics and poetry are making out sloppy style as we speak.
i find when it comes to science i'm more of an auditory learner, so i've listened to a ton of daniel and jorge explain the universe in the past few months. daniel is a particle physicist and jorge is a cartoonist, and every episode daniel explains a different scientific concept in layman's terms while jorge interjects now and then with questions people without a background in science might have. some of my favorite episodes are "does quantum mechanics make sense?" "what is making the universe explode?" and, of course, "how does a nuclear bomb work?"
i also LOVE the wired 5 levels of difficulty videos, where they get an expert to explain the same concept to a kid, a high schooler, a college student, a grad student, and an expert. they recently uploaded a video of an MIT professor of nuclear science and engineering explaining nuclear fusion. would also recommend the videos of brian greene explaining time and janna levin explaining black holes.
i want to read the biggest ideas in the universe and from eternity to here: the quest for the ultimate theory of time by sean carroll, a theoretical physicist i've heard talk in a few videos/podcasts, and he always does a great job clearly and concisely articulating incredibly complex concepts. quantum: einstein, bohr, and the great debate about the nature of reality by manjit kumar and the rigor of angels: borges, heisenberg, kant, and the ultimate nature of reality by william egginton are also on my list.
if you or anyone else has any recs i would love to hear them!

Say, what are some characters you feel like had a metric ton of potential that was completely scrapped by the writers?
i feel like it would be cheating if i said all of them so. ill try and be more specific lmao <3 i was gonna show restraint and only do a few but FUCK IT you're getting the entire essay
coran. i know he's meant to be the Comic Relief character but idk. its possible to have a comic relief character who also has gravity and emotion, ykw ??? like idk i feel like all the show/fandom ever talks about is how allura lost everything (which is TRUE. SHE DID. IM NOT TRYING TO MINIMIZE THAT AT ALL.) but idk. allura was young enough that she probably didn't really have an established life on altea yet but coran??? he was an adult. fully grown, probably had friends or coworkers, even a partner and family. idk idk he lost as much as if not more than allura did and the writers barely ever acknowledged it. he isn't allowed to connect with any of the characters or have any actual genuine moments because he's supposed to be The Funny One. idk if the writing actually aknowledged his grief and trauma more, but still made him so lighthearted and goofy, that would be FASCINATING. HE STILL HAS HOPE. HE CAN STILL LAUGH. ET CETERA. but noooo he's just Silly with nothing deeper to it. sigh
in that same vein, hunk. again, he's often comic relief (and that comic relief is usually a fat joke
lotor. ik a lot of ppl have mixed opinions on the guy (fair) but like. he had SO much potential to be so many different things but i think the writers just. had too many things they wanted him to be. so his writing was all over the place because they couldn't make up their minds
haggar......again. i had SUCH a hard time pinning down any of her motives or characterization when she was the Main Villain (which to be fair might have been due to the fact that i was Mentally Checked The Fuck Out by the time s7/s8 rolled around) but like ??? i still have no idea what she was trying to do as the main villain in s7/8. she was such a menacing villain in the first few seasons but then the writing got soo confusing and needlessly complicated and i completely lost interest in anything about her character
shiro. the fact that he went through So Much but still gave the blade of marmora enough hope to risk everything to rescue him and kickstart the events of s1 ??? the fact that he Continued to go through So Much but was still a rock for the team and was still goofy and fun and dorky and lovable ?????? and ALL THAT to not even be in the show for the next 5 or so seasons and then be permanently sidelined when he DOES come back. what the fuck. like they tried to have an atlas metaphor later on to try and bring him back into the narrative but it was MEANINGLESS. sooo much wasted potential. a narrative about healing....finding love + family + connection......ending the war that has caused so much pain for Him Personally......man. we could have had it ALL
keith. i legiterally don't even recognize keith after s3 like !!! who is this man !!!!! he had abandonment + anger issues from being alone his Whole Life and instead of finding a close-knit family in space, he was isolated again and again and again, and shoved into a role he didn't want and wasn't meant for, and by the end bro was UNRECOGNIZABLE. in theory i LOVE the concept of keith learning to rely on his team more and take more of a leadership role as he grows as a person + teammate, but they had the PERFECT opportunity to do that already with keith being red paladin!!!!!!!! the red paladin is voltron's right hand!!!!!!! if the black isn't there, then red steps up to take charge!!!!!! idk. it would have been so so so so cool if shiro was only missing Temporarily and keith had to work through his own grief/fear/etc and take up the mantle of red paladin to keep the team together just long enough until shiro got back because he would NOT want that shit long-term. idk. i know keith literally got most of the storylines and arcs in the show but i still think he had wasted potential because most of those arcs fundamentally misunderstood him as a character and turned him into something he wasn't. idk
allura. she lost her ENTIRE FAMILY her ENTIRE CULTURE her ENTIRE SPECIES and it doesn't stop there lol !!!! over the course of the show she lost LITERALLY EVERYTHING. the castle of lions (the last remnant of her home), her tiara thingie (last thing she had left of her family), AND her life. what the fuuuck what the fuck. EVEN WITH the other alteans w romelle's group, allura still got discarded. like idk. she grieved her whole people and tried so hard to lead this resistance and then after she's grown so much and become a powerful leader and warrior she becomes queen of new altea. that would have been SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
matt. he was alone in space for YEARS. like its unclear how long it was between shiro saving him from the arena and pidge finally finding him, but it was at LEAST a year, probably longer. he was a prisoner for most of that time, separated from the only two people he knew, and likely thinking they're both dead. no way to be rescued. no way to escape. and THEN when he IS rescued by the rebels, he's alone still because he's the only human!!! none of them can speak his language!!! he can't go home!!!! and ofc he fights the galra as part of the resistance and is this badass rebel leader but the show doesn't shed ANY light on how he got there. how he turned from nerdy little scientist to badass rebel leader in a space war. and just. idk. there was barely ANY matt screentime and there was so much wasted potential there
and i could keep going. i could have an essay for every single character. but alas i am sooo fucking sleepy so i must cap it here </3

Your post about Crosshair not valuing kindness and seeing it as a weakness is spot on.
That's why Crosshair fans kinda scare me. Like they're so hellbent on trying to prove that he's just this innocent man who loves his "brothers." When in reality he loves the idea of his brothers being superior, and when they don't fit that mold, he (and his fans) tries to make it about himself/loyalty.
Right like Crosshairs thing is that he's unkind. He's just not nice and he doesn't want to be. Narratively, power/ego is his modus operandi and he doesn't care what happens to innocents as long as he feels like he is wanted (which is funny in an ironic way that I'm not sure I can perfectly lay out. He's very "I don't need you" from a higher-than-thou standpoint @ the regs but is aware he's nothing without the empire, more than he's nothing without his brothers)
They just need to admit that he puts himself first and disguises it as wanting to be with his brothers. He wants them to feed his ego. In the bad batch his sense of superiority literally relied on him saying what he wanted, wrecker backing him up physically, and tech and hunter not saying anything to get him to stop until well past the boiling point. Like he's a piece of shit. He's not very forgiveable because there's an upper limit on acceptable behavior when people are demanding things like loyalty and attention. Joining a fascist empire and being a eugenicist are those limits.
I bet it kills him that regs are loyal to each other regardless of what goes on between them. And I think he fundamentally misunderstands what loyalty even is. He wants followers. He said he wouldn't have been so loyal to the Republic if he'd been "abandoned" the way Echo was (although can we really say Echo was abandoned if everyone legiterately thought he was dead? I'm basing this off memory btw) but Rex going to the lengths that he did to make sure it was echo WAS loyalty. I'm sure that if Rex was told to do it alone, he would have. That's loyalty. That's love.
Rex spared Cut and his family despite Cuts not obeying their "higher calling" because he's loyal, even if he'd originally construed cut as being disloyal to his own brothers. His loyalty has limits. He apprehended Slick. He stopped Krell, even if it took him a while to see the problems, because he was loyal to both the Republic and his brothers. When people cross a line, Rex makes it very clear who he'll stick with.
Crosshair wanted the bad batch to cross a line by killing a child. When the bad batch said no, he construed it as disloyalty to him. They're supposed to do everything together no matter what. His bond with his brothers doesn't exist for its own sake, but because it was forged through their skills and their superiority. When they don't reinforce it, they may as well not be brothers.
And as much as he whinges about tbb not giving him a chance, he literally CHOSE the empire over the people he'd disowned and claimed to want back when they gave him a chance to go with them because he's tied his value and his bonds to state violence.
Aaaand this is long enough as it is! It's a shame because without all the racism crosshair would be a VERY interesting case study on a clone who so strongly goes against the grain of what a clone is expected to be. But because his very existence is embedded in racism and because he's also a brat, I can't have fun with this how I want 😭

Hey, You Should All Read Heir
This was a submission by my friend, HeartOfStars, and I am sobbing at how thoughtful it was, how sweet, and... just knowing that something I wrote could touch someone like this is unreal and so, so precious to me. Thank you so much, Stars, I love you <3
*
So I’ve been following this story, The Heir, for a while, first by sneaking on Spell’s Tumblr and then also on AO3, and I started to really want to write something about it, because it has really started to affect me, and I love it so, so much. And if you haven’t read it, I’m gonna share with you right now why I think you should. Heir is an amazing, amazing fanfiction, in a number of ways; and it also is pretty unconventional. It does a lot of things that technically shouldn’t all work together in a story, except that they DO, because the wonderful SPELLCLEAVER is writing them.
And so I’m probably not going to get to say all that I want to say here, but this is the gist of it. Heir is crazy because it started out as a simple five-sentence prompt that happened to exceed the five-sentence limit. (By a lot of sentences, lmao. Mood.) But anyway, it started as one prompt that dealt with Luke being raised by Palpatine, which is, first and foremost, an absolutely horrifying idea. And initially, I confess it actually turned me off. I’m a softer person who’s always liked…fluffier stories, and while I do like angst, my brain has a limit for how much I could take. A story about Luke Palpatine was too dark for me, so I decided to pass.
But then, against all odds, Spell just kind of…ran with it. And kept taking more prompts for this amazing AU(instead of moving it to AO3, she kept it here on Tumblr, which is fantastic), she developed the story, and that’s when I realized the FIRST(of many) brilliant thing she had done. She’d made the Luke Palpatine story about the slow healing of Luke and Vader’s relationship. And that’s brilliant because…see, a Luke Palpatine story, in my head, would be dark because of all the stuff that Palpatine would do to Luke. It would show Luke being tortured, miserable, and succumbing to the Dark Side. It would be nothing but dark. But not only does this start after Palpatine has been killed, it focuses heavily on Vader trying to give Luke good things, and while it shows dark things in flashbacks, while Luke is unhappy for a lot of it, those are in spades. Essentially, it’s about a father trying to prove himself to his son(who is much younger than he is in canon), and that’s what I didn’t expect.
So when I realized that, I started to like the story. It was still dark…but I was starting to like it, because that aspect appealed to me. Then Spell did something that appealed to me even more. Following the beginning, which is incredibly angsty, and filled with poor fourteen-year-old Luke being terrified of everyone, and Vader not being able to be close to the son he loves…Spell did another brilliant thing. She introduced a plot point also known as Vader Gives His Son Stuffed Animals Anonymously. That was absolutely, wildly unprecedented. And that’s because this whole-ass fic, about angst, SUDDENLY INTRODUCED A PLOT POINT THAT IS NOTHING BUT FLUFF. And see, this is another thing that shouldn’t have worked, because it’s so fluffy it’s…almost crack. In a completely angsty fic. Darth Vader??? From Star Wars??? A giant cyborg?? Sending??? A child???? Stuffed????? Animals????? Unprecedented. But as I said, it works. Why, you ask? Because Spell makes it work. She weaves it into the plot, into the angst, and uses it to help develop Luke and Vader’s growing relationship. So, we’ve established that we have two things right now: Luke Palpatine(and all the angst and trauma associated with that), and Vader bringing his son stuffed animals. In the same fic.
Okay.
Then Spell did a THIRD thing. And this, this absolutely should not have worked with the previous two, because I’ve never seen this done before in any fic.
This thing is called “Sith possession.“
Spell absolutely made this up, and then wove it into the plot. (Because I forgot the thing that makes Luke Palpatine brilliant, and we’ll put it under the first point. Call it 1a. But the other thing that made it Not Too Dark was that Spell didn’t have Palps actually train Luke. Cause that tends to lead to Dark Luke, which can be too much for some people, like Soft Stars Over Here Which We Previously Established.) But Spell had Palpatine not train Luke, to chip away at his self-esteem, which until THIS MOMENT seemed to be for the purpose of making Luke’s relationship with Vader more heartbreaking; because Luke didn’t believe in himself, and Vader slowly, slowly had to convince him of it, which was amazing. But. Wait a minute. It turns out there was ANOTHER purpose, aka, Palpatine wanting to legiterally possess Luke and crush his soul. That was AMAZING.
But here’s the thing. That should’ve been too dark. For Soft Stars, and for other people. But it wasn’t, and that’s because Spell wove THAT into Luke and Vader’s relationship, and that is the brilliance of this fic. She introduces all these plot elements, the fluff, the dark stuff, the Clone Wars characters, but not a single one of them takes away from the heartbreaking relationship, and where it needs to go. Because the second the possession plot point was introduced, the focus becomes not "oh no, Luke will be possessed” but “oh yes, Vader is absolutely determined to do everything in his power to keep Luke from being possessed.” And that, in turn, built on Luke’s self-esteem. It allowed him to trust in Vader more, to trust in himself, and it keeps going from there.
The final two plot points only built on this, and these are a) Luke finding out that Vader is his father, and b) Luke vs Palpatine. I won’t tell you how it ends, in case you haven’t read it. But I’ll have you know that the way it’s done builds on all of these three(and a half counting 1a) Brilliant Things, and it is absolutely beautiful, and wonderful, and heartbreaking, and inspiring. And, beyond all of these things(I’ve used “thing” too many times. Not good), the thing that has drawn me to this fic is, as I’ve said, Luke and Vader’s relationship. Because here’s the thing. This fic has a sad premise. It has a really, really, really, REALLY SAD PREMISE. Luke is a fourteen-year-old kid who has no friends and who’s been tortured his whole life…by the man who’s actually his father. But the places it goes are hopeful. They’re beautiful. They’re emotional. They’re inspiring. Because Luke and Vader start at a sad place, but their relationship gets better, in beautiful ways. And some of the scenes between them have made me straight-up cry. And ultimately, this fic appeals to me because it deals with the basic themes of wanting to be loved, which both Luke and Vader feel, and which Spell makes sure the reader feels. From the beginning, I felt desperate for both of them to know who the other was, and to come close to each other, and to understand…and though it takes a while, Spell pays it off. Magnificently. Luke and Vader are both alone, but by coming close to one another, they form a bond, and each find someone to love in the other. And then, at the end(or the almost end), they do belong. They are loved. And this is something that, I think, speaks to all of us.
So. This probably comes off as a lot of not that eloquent ranting but I don’t care…because SpellCleaver, who’s one of my dear friends, has made this amazing, amazing story, that has inspired me, in terms of my fics, which are probably not as well done as this, but I try. And this has inspired them. But this fic, above anything else I have ever read(and that includes a lot of published novels), made me feel better about myself. I happened to be going through a rough time this summer but this fic helped me push through it. And if some of you haven’t read this, I hope this convinces you to go and read it. Because Heir is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve seen in my entire life(and I’ve STUDIED art. Aka I put money into it), and it’s made my life better, and many times, it has brought me to tears. So thank you, SpellCleaver, for inspiring me, and for making me feel better about myself, and I hope you know what an absolute miracle you’ve worked.
~ HeartOfStars

I’ve read some really cute things about them. #noromo ship(s): I want him to be friends with Herrah and Monomon,,, I know it’s popular to have both of them just pick him which isn’t bad, but he deserves friends too. crack ship(s): I don’t have one for him! fav headcanon(s): I really genuinely truly legiterally enjoy the thought of him having powerful telepathic powers. Let him lift up a pizza slice with his mind. Let him throw someone against a wall for being annoying by will and and will alone.

Me looking at posts claiming that the Destiel scene was homophobic
Tumblr media
We all knew that Cas was going to die. The title o the episode is legiterally despair. What else conveys despair more than Cas being snatched away right after confessing his love to Dean; ergo not giving Dean enough time to process and leaving him shocked and empty. That is the whole point of that episode. To have us feeling hopeless going into the last 2 episodes.
Also, The Empty is where angels AND demons go after dying NO MATTER WHAT! It wouldn’t make sense for Cas to go anywhere else. Hell, he made a deal with the empty and you know what? He’s probably gonna sleep for the rest of his life, peacefully.
Finally, imagine YOU were in the process of fighting Death, dealing with an insane God AND the potential end of the world on the side, and you have previously been known to say:
Tumblr media
Relationships would have been the last thing on your mind.
Then your BEST FUCKING FRIEND starts going off and after asking them why it sounds like their saying goodbye, they say its because it IS a good bye, and then they tell you the love you, (and keeping in mind that all the relationships you’ve had in the past have involved someone of the other gender than this friend) you would be a little overwhelmed and surprised too. THEN, if that wasn’t enough, seconds later, they shove you out of harms way and die.
I get that people wanted more Destiel then we were given, but we got it, we got something in an episode that was long awaited and we knew that would end in tears and Cas dying. It wouldn’t have mattered if we got it at the start of the episode or when we did. Cas was going to go to the empty no matter what and y’all know it.
You would have complained about Cas going to a place worse then hell regardless.
Finally, Jensen has never supported this ship and THATS ALRIGHT! Not once has he ever said anything homophobic. And he has a right to his opinion. He has PREVIOUSLY, as in BEFORE this episode was even scripted, said that destiel was not cannon, but never before has he said that he was disgusted by the ship or the idea of it. After all, he know Dean better than any of us, and Dean loves his FAMILY. He left people like Lisa, like Cassie, for FAMILY. Cas was his FAMILY.
Do I wish we got more Destiel?
Yes, yes I do. But it just wouldn’t have suited that episode. Besides if characters need to kiss or say “I love you” to show they’re in love, then they really aren’t in love at all.

wait hang on who are the hot gay boys in that gif set you reblogged
HGLHSIERGLSJDGALKSHGLK i was gonna put the [do you have any idea how little that narrows it down] meme but im pretty sure u mean this one <3 and in any case i will always be down to ramble about the Sillies(tm)
ok so those guys in particular are from the fox procedural called 9-1-1 Lone Star, which is a spinoff of the original 9-1-1 (which just got moved to abc after some Drama that went down so my tag for it is 911 (not fox) lmaoo). but both shows are about first responders (firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, police) with a particular focus on firefighters. 9-1-1 (the og) is set in LA, and primarily focuses on the 118 firehouse and the firefighters/paramedics there with some other characters in the main cast who work as dispatchers/police officers (the police storylines are more often than not FULL of copaganda which sucks but the main focus is on the firefighters so i'm able to enjoy the rest of the show). 9-1-1 Lone Star is pretty much the same except it's set in austin texas, and is about the 126 firehouse. there are onscreen queer characters in both (in the og there's a married lesbian couple raising a kid, and in lone star there's the aforementioned hot gay boys [one of whom is unfortunately a cop but i swear to GOD i will get him out of there. one day.] and in lone star there's also a trans man and wlw woman in the main cast.) and my favorite thing about these shows is the found family !!! like these are the shows that have endeared firefighter aus to me because they live together and eat meals together and just. the familial/platonic love is So Powerful and it legiterally makes me cry to watch. like there's romance ofc but genuinely it's one of my favorite found family medias to ever exist. its So.
of the two the og is my favorite for a LOT of reasons, but they're both pretty enjoyable !! lone star definitely has more of a comedic tone than og (theyre BOTH funny but lone star doesn't have as many somber intense moments as og does, and they're much more spread out so there's a lot more room for goofy shenanigans. but og still definitely has plenty of those) and the team dynamics in them both are just...ughhh <3333
HOWEVER. lone star has ..... Him...(derogatory)...he's the fire captain and (despite lone star SUPPOSEDLY being an ensemble show with no Main Character) is in fact. the Main Character. and he's the blandest most obnoxious crustiest white man to ever LIVE. he gets most of the storylines and he's constantly propped up by the writing as The Coolest Guy Ever when he's just . not . i hate him so much it's unreal it's soo so unreal (<- biting the bars of my cage) BUT the rest of the team ??? absolutely love them. like i DO love lone star a lot its a great show with great characters and dynamics but it just has. the most annoying guy to ever live front and center when ITS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ENSEMBLE SHOW FEATURING EVERYONE EQUALLY. grr. anyway. og does a much better job of being an ensemble show, and i could not choose a favorite character of the main cast if you held me at gunpoint. angela bassett is there. i am gay. jennifer love hewitt is there. i am very gay. etcetera.
AND SINCE YOU ASKED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE LONE STAR GAYS ILL TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT THEM
so one of them is tk strand (firefighter/paramedic, also the son of the Main Character (derogatory). i have many many many thoughts about that. i would probably get gunned down in this fandom if i ever said them aloud.) and the other one is carlos reyes (a private detective TO MEEEEEEEEEEEE but unfortunately fox is full of cowards who refuse to see the truth. they wanna have a gay cop in their show sooo bad </3) and they're kind of the main romance of the show (there Are others ofc but theyre like. The Focus. which is fine ig but i do wish there was more focus on other relationships because in general lone star isnt as good as the ensemble thing as og. but i already complained about that so i digress.)
now they're a fun pair because one of them has been shot, frozen almost to death, and otherwise put into a coma on MULTIPLE occasions. and it's not the guy whose entire job is to get shot at. (the whump in both of these shows.....................absolutely effervescent. im thriving here.) and they have a very fascinating relationship because their personalities fit together really well but they have different ways of coping with shit that kind of tear each other apart a little bit. which is of course terrible for them but incredible for me. and the writing is at times ridiculous. soap opera-esque, even. they're ridiculous. i adore them. they cannot catch a god damn break and i love that for them even more. <3

honestly, if you don’t think about yuto for every single millisecond of every single waking moment that you are alive then why do you exist? huh? what’s the legiteral point? I seriously wake up in the middle of the night thinkin “wow....... yuto left japan when he was 15 to move to a foreign country to chase his dream of being something he wanted to be since he was a literal CHILD and he overcame so much, and put in so much effort, time, blood sweat & tears and he accomplished it. but, even then he doesn’t think it’s enough because he expects himself to be that much more successful because he holds such high standards for himself and genuinely believes that he won’t be able to repay all the love, support and kindness his family and friends have given him. even though he’s already proved to be an extremely diligent, kindhearted and well rounded person who at all times try to contribute and voice out his ideas in hope that pentagon will become successful and globally loved.” and then I shit my pants thoroughly.

@czhng [ character questions ] :  i know this isn't particularly deep, but what are your favorite (and currently applied) tropes / motifs / themes? e.g. manuela's status as a grand dame, the unfortunate reality of ann's weaponized femininity, etc.
first of all: its a GREAT question!!!! tropes / motifs and themes are the BUILDING blocks of characterization and Writing.... i daresay they are the core of the character and writing, and my favorite part of analysis and writing besides symbolism and the rampant metaphors i run with. so i’m very happy you asked this!!!!
all of my characters obviously have different tropes / motifs / themes that i like, but like every writer, my favorites are the ones that reflect my personal world views of intersectionality. when i can make a point that a marginalied character is both flawed and perfectly reasonable&sympathetic even within the confines of those flaws, i feel both validated and validating. and that’s something very important to me---that marginalized characters always have reasons for their flaws and quirks, and those reasons are painted as either a direct example or a direct metaphor for an institutional problem that causes warped logic, perception, or behaviors. particular to the magic of rp, i can take a canon that already has tropes and themes and motifs, and warp it myself to suit my ideas about the world and my perception that isms cause Problems Disorder, but that the character still has beautiful, tender moments, and is worthy of love, perhaps even in many cases, more love than they are given in canon.
i’ll give JUST three examples of the ones i’m most obsessed with right now.
for dimitri of fire emblem fame, canon talks a lot about chivalry, knighthood, masculine violence. it does not truly glorify it, as each character is so traumatized within the state of violence and knighthood that actively hurts them, but i use my dimitri to further posit that chivalry/knighthood/masculine violence preys on young men, and the mentally ill, like dimitri, and warps their perception of violence to the point where they become violent themselves, not because of their mental illness, but because the system is broken and stacked against any kindness or gentleness within them. while i haven’t used it, my favorite motif is to compare dimitri not to lions, but to a young boy thrown to the wolves, and raised by them to hunt for blood instead.
for a less drastic example of this, take claude!!!!!! his canon is very strange, because it tries to obfuscate itself. claude is a prince, and he’s handsome, and he’s gentle, but he’s also quite rude by his own admission. he plays it off with jokes and the fandom thus treats him as a sunshine boy / himbo, but this is not the case. my favorite trope for claude is something that is not often times given to characters of color, which is lovable asshole rogue with a heart of gold. the robin hood, the han solo. he’s skeptical, cynical often times, he grew up in rough, hard conditions---but he’s also the hero of his own story, he grows to have a family of friends that he loves despite their initial perceptions of himself and his people (and the game, for all its fault, does show their biases against claude as classism, racism, truly evil things that must be dealt with and dismissed as their parent’s falsehoods). this one isn’t particularly deep---but i just love the idea, that he’s allowed to be such a quintessential, flawed-by-the-name-of-the-trope-on-the-tin, hero. it’s special and it’s so fuckin rare in jrpgs for non-east asian characters to get such a treatment.
the last trope is something that i use in literally all of my writing, for every single character, every single fandom. this, of course, is not an idea i had, but something i learned when i started becoming more aware of social issues and paying more attention to the voices of black theorists, writers and social activists. and that’s that the darkness vs light paradigm so prevalent in every piece of fiction for p much every series i write on this blog, is harmful, bigoted and the definition of colorism. when i found this out, it sort of, changed me as a person? and it definitely changed me both as a consumer of culture, and a writer. for the first time, i was forced to realize, hey, this shorthand for every conflict of good vs evil i’ve ever seen is wrong, and it forced me to become a better writer, and realize, there were much better ways to talk about good vs evil, and also that every thing we considered ‘good’ as a default, could be used to talk about evil, and everything that we considered ‘dark’ and ‘evil’ as a default, could be used to talk about safety, kindness, good. it changed my writing forever, and it made it a lot better, but i would never have found it out without blogs like writingwithcolor. as a white-passing white and east asian person who consumes mostly american & east asian media, i might have gone my whole life without being shown this. i’m really grateful for the information they put out there.
not only does this information make my writing less antiblack (which is of course the most important thing), this framework of thinking makes every jrpg and piece of media SO much deeper, and such an opportunity to give the marginalized characters within (bc arent the jrpg villains ALWAYS black, lgbtcoded, women) the breathing room they need to be fully-fleshed out characters. i’m really just so grateful that the internet exists and there are so many black bloggers that are able to put such incredible resources of information out there, so that i could put this theme in my writing.
besides that, generally i like the ‘monsters are GOOD actually’ and ‘women can be violent & ugly and they are still women, still beautiful, still worthy of love’ tropes most. but i think i talk about them in like. legiterally every reply, and i don’t talk about these as much lol
