Also, the whole part about there being "enormous projects afoot." That whole conversation we saw is what Aziraphale was relaying to Crowley, which itself adds so many possible layers to things!)

So it's entirely possible the Metatron said things to Aziraphale we don't know about. I don't think Aziraphale is outright lying, he sounds too genuinely excited about the whole thing and historically whenever we have seen Aziraphale lie he's not the best at it. I think Aziraphale is, at first, genuinely excited/swept up in the idea (and was susceptible to the manipulative tactics employed by the Metatron, but that's a whole other rant). But Aziraphale is smart. I think he realizes at some point in the final fifteen what is actually going on, how the Metatron is trying to keep them apart, and thats what solidifies his decision to go. Because it means something big is going on, something that could jeopardize Earth and his future with Crowley, and Aziraphale knows that he has a much better chance of finding out what it is/how to stop it by accepting the job.

Also, the short conversation we saw between the Metatron and Aziraphale before he went to tell Crowley about the Metatron's offer has always struck me as strange. The Metatron tells Aziraphale "Well, you don't have to answer immediately. Take all the time you need." To which we get a cautious sounding Aziraphale respond with "I- I don't know what to say" followed by a nervous chuckle. It doesn't quite match with the excitement we saw when he went to tell Crowley about the offer. The Metatron responds to this hesitancy with "Well then, go and tell your friend the good news," which can go one of two ways. The most obvious way, where the Metatron is assuming/pushing Aziraphale into accepting immediately by taking the previous statement as an acceptance. Or, a more interesting possibility, that the "good news" isn't the answer the Metatron was talking about at the start of the conversation. It's some other proposal we haven't seen, one that Aziraphale is much more cautious about.

Aziraphale didn't leave just because he thought he could fix heaven. He was offered the job, and initially declined (again, "I dont want to go back to heaven!") because he would've had to leave Crowley. I think Aziraphale realized (at least in part) what was going on and that the only way to stop it/make a difference so him and Crowley can be together is to go to heaven, even if Crowley doesn't come with him. And I think it is entirely probable that the Metatron said things to Aziraphale that we don't know about, things that Aziraphale used to connect the dots and solidify his need to go to heaven so that they can be safe in the end.

But in the meantime it's heartbreaking 💔
