Have I already posted something like this? Yes. Am I gonna do this anyway? Also yes.
*clears throat*
Reasons why you should read the How To Train Your Dragon books if you haven't already (regardless of whether or not you're a fan of the movies)
The drawings throughout the books can range from being silly little doodles one moment to unforgettable portrayals of some of the most intense scenes in fiction you'll ever read.
Toothless is A Baby (and a bit of an asshole, but in the same way that a cat is an asshole).
Hiccup can verbally communicate with dragons, and the dragon language is canonically composed out of absolute nonsense
Fishlegs is ten times more important to the story due to being Hiccup's best friend, and he also has an incredibly lovely arc of his own.
Speaking of arcs, Hiccup's arc throughout the series is a beautiful portrayal of a misfit becoming a hero in his own way and advocating for the rejection of all of the flawed ideals that his ancestors put into place.
Seriously, this is a book series about choosing to be intelligent, imaginative, and empathetic in a society that wants you to be the opposite of all of that.
While Astrid is great, Camicazi---the character who was probably her jumping-off point, since they both have a dragon named Stormfly---is a feral gremlin of a girl who we should all aspire to be (also, as far as I can recall, there's never any hints of there being something romantic between her and Hiccup, or her and Fishlegs---it's just a great platonic friendship between the three of them, which is a win for me personally).
Alvin the fucking Treacherous. This, to me, is something that the movies absolutely should've added, because he is one of the best goddamn villains... ever. I genuinely cannot think of any other piece of media that shows the main antagonist developing side-by-side alongside the hero, becoming a worse and worse threat as the story gets darker and the stakes get higher, but my god did it rewire my mind as a kid... and for spoilers, that's all I'll say about it!
The dragon designs are the. Most. Fun. Every single kind of dragon in this series is unique, memorable, and more often than not, really hammers in the fact that "dragon" is a word that encompasses a vast number of traits---really, it just means a creature that's weird and somewhat reptillian, and these books take that concept and run. With. It.
THE LORE AND FORESHADOWING IS FUCKING LEGENDARY. If I go into any detail, I will spoil so much, but let it be known that if you're writing a story, and you want to work in foreshadowing and big reveals in both a mystery and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it fashion, these books are a masterclass in how to do it. Loose threads that you don't even know existed will be woven in right when you least expect it.
Honestly... I don't think it's too much of a stretch to compare How To Train Your Dragon to Adventure Time, because their way of storytelling is similar in all the best ways. Yes, at first, it leans more on the comedic side of things, but as you delve further into the story, it unfolds into a truly fascinating epic about growing up and what it means to be a hero... and it also gets very, very dark. I'm not exaggerating when I say that some parts of the later books gave me nightmares, and I loved every second of it.
Big fucking kaiju sea dragons with eyes that shoot lightning what more could you WANT
#how to train your dragon#httyd books#hiccup horrendous haddock iii#i need you all to understand what these books did to me#i'll admit when i was younger it was mostly the weird dragon designs that captivated me#and i did make the mistake of reading them COMPLETELY out of order#but i read them in order later and everything else pulled me right in

Blue Skies and Green Eyes (Jake Seresin x Reader)
A/N: so I decided to just write an air show meet cute for Jake, Bradley and Bob because, even with a poll, how could I ever choose? So, here's the first of three, I guess? 😅
pairing: Jake Seresin x reader
content/warnings: pure fluff, air show inaccuracies because the last time I went to one I was 9, and it was in a cornfield, reader has a named niece and nephew, no physical description of reader given other than an allusion to them being tall.
word count: 2.1k
On the sun-soaked beach, your niece and nephew climbed over one another eagerly on the blanket you had carefully arranged, vying for the best spot to witness the spectacle unfolding overhead. The air show, a cherished tradition passed down from your father to you and your brother, had become an annual pilgrimage for your family. Determined to keep the legacy alive, you eagerly took charge of the tradition when your brother couldn't make it to your nephew's first air show.
For the past seven years, this had been your unique tradition with them. As the jets roared to life in the sky, the kids engaged in a lively dispute, each competing for an unobstructed view of the aerial acrobatics. Your brow furrowed as their bickering escalated, prompting an eye roll from you. Seizing the opportunity to diffuse the tension, you chuckled and settled between them, effectively creating a barrier that halted their squabble.
“Hey!” They both protested, shaking their heads in dismay.
“If it's the only way to prevent a full-blown war between you two, then I'm planting myself right here,” you declared with a playful smirk.
Mia, your spirited niece, responded with a pout and crossed arms, while Aiden, her older brother, countered by sticking his tongue out at her, a mischievous grin adorning his face as he comfortably claimed his spot beside you.
“Aiden,” you warned, catching his silent final shot at his sister out of the corner of your eye.
“Sorry.”
A warm smile adorned your face as you, along with the children, gazed skyward, captivated by the mesmerizing display of aircraft maneuvering through a series of intricate twists, turns, and loops. Aiden erupted in cheers and enthusiastic whistles, his excitement bubbling over as a FA-18 Super Hornet executed a flawless barrel roll high above. Engrossed in the spectacle, he fervently waved at the aircraft above him, a hopeful gesture that the pilot might catch a glimpse and reciprocate in some way. Beside him, Mia eagerly pointed upward, her eyes widening in sheer wonder as the plane effortlessly navigated a knife-edge flight, leaving her with an awestruck expression that mirrored the spectacle unfolding before her.
As the airshow continued, the sky became a canvas for more daring aerobatics. Another set of aircraft roared onto the scene, executing synchronized maneuvers that left trails of smoke swirling against the azure backdrop. Aiden and Mia's attention darted from one spectacle to another, their faces alive with awe and exhilaration. You couldn't help but share in their enthusiasm, reveling in the joy of witnessing these aerial feats with the same awestruck gaze you had as a child yourself, completely fascinated by the skill executed in every move.
Suddenly, a squadron of jets soared in tight formation, their wings almost touching as they painted the sky with precision. The deafening roar of engines filled the air as the pilots skillfully executed a breathtaking sequence of loops and rolls, creating a symphony of motion that left the onlookers breathless.
Aiden, his eyes glued to the spectacle, whispered in amazement, "I want to be a pilot one day, just like them!"
Mia, equally captivated, nodded in agreement, her imagination ignited by the incredible display unfolding above.
“Do you think we could meet them?!” Aiden asked excitedly as he turned his attention to you.
“I don’t know, honey, they’re probably really busy,” you explained with a nod of your head, knowing that the chances were unlikely to be in your favour.
“Can we try?! Please?”
You looked at Aiden’s pleading face, and then to his sister, who had decided to match his facial expressions, their innocent faces making nearly impossible for you to say no to.
“Fine, we can try. But I’m not making any promises, guys. You know, they’re really busy, and they’re actual military pilots, they’ve got lots of stuff to do.”
The children both cheered the moment you agreed to their request, and you could tell that the last portion of your reply was falling on deaf ears. You huffed a mock dramatic sigh as you squeezed both of them into a tight hug, laughing softly.
After the airshow had concluded, all Mia and Aiden could talk about was how you were taking them to try and meet some of the pilots. You felt an anxious knot in the pit of your stomach, nervous that you’d be unable to fulfill their wish. Holding both of the children’s hands, you approached the airfield fence where the pilots could be seen chatting after the show, their planes merely feet away from where you stood. A group of pilots who appeared to be in their early to late 30s stood together, laughing cordially as they spoke. One of the pilots, a tall blonde with an air of pure, unbridled confidence to his stance took notice of you as you stood with Mia and Aiden. He waved his hand to say hello, and Aiden practically squealed in excitement, jumping up and down on the spot.
The blonde pilot raised his hand to his colleagues, appearing to excuse himself for a moment. Suddenly, you noticed Aiden’s attention turn to the side. You and Mia followed his gaze, noticing that the blonde pilot was now on your side of the fence that separated the three of you from the military aircraft in the field.
“Hi, did y’all enjoy the airshow?” The aviator asked, flashing a charming smile at you as he lifted his sunglasses to rest on top of his perfectly coiffed hair.
Aiden nodded his head in a stunned silence, starstruck by the man standing before him. The allure of the charismatic Navy pilot was undeniable. His tall, athletic frame exuded confidence, and his sun-kissed skin bore witness to countless hours spent in the cockpit under the Californian sun. Those stunning pale green eyes seemed to hold the vastness of the sky, hinting at the adventures he'd encountered soaring through the clouds. Jake's charming smile had a magnetic quality, drawing you in with its warmth and openness. The subtle southern drawl in his voice added an extra layer of appeal, creating a melody that resonated with the thrill of the airshow and the laid-back atmosphere of the beach.
“We did,” you said after a moment’s hesitation, trying to not appear like a lovestruck teenager as your eyes briefly met with his.
The pilot knelt down to Aiden and Mia’s level, smiling at them both with the same charming grin he gave you a moment ago.
“Do you kids like planes?”
“I do!” Aiden and Mia both responded in unison.
“That’s awesome to hear! My name is Jake, I fly planes for the US Navy, see that one there?” He beamed proudly as he gestured towards one of the grey aircraft parked in the distance, “That’s my plane. All of our planes have our names on them so we know who’s is who’s, and our callsigns, so we can just use one word to talk to each other on the radio.”
“What’s your callsign?” Aiden asked, tilting his head as he looked at Jake.
“Hangman. Like the game, where you have to guess letters to find out what the secret word is, do you know that one?”
Aiden nodded his head and grinned. You couldn’t help but admire how patient and friendly Jake was towards Aiden and Mia, taking care to answer their eager questions with thorough answers and explanations, leaving nothing unanswered. As he spoke passionately about his experiences as a Top Gun graduate stationed at Miramar, you couldn't help but be captivated by the combination of his professionalism, adventurous spirit, and undeniable charm.
“Do you have a rank?” Aiden quizzed, tilting his head.
“Of course! Lieutenant Jake Seresin, US Navy,” Jake grinned, “And what’s your name, little guy?”
“I’m Aiden, and this is my sister, Mia,” Aiden explained, before introducing you as somewhat of an afterthought due to his excitement.
Jake looked up at you, a genuine smile forming on his lips. His green eyes stayed on you, and you could feel a sense of curiosity in his gaze. He turned his attention back to your niece and nephew, his hand resting on his knee as he looked at them both.
“Nice to meet y’all! Maybe, if your aunt says it’s ok, you guys could come back here one weekend, and I could give y’all a tour of the planes, let you meet some other pilots? Sound fun?”
Jake's offer had your niece and nephew practically buzzing with excitement. Their pleading eyes and enthusiastic pleas tugged at your heartstrings, mirroring the eagerness that now danced in your own eyes. You exchanged a glance with Jake, whose genuine smile hinted at an underlying warmth.
"Well, Lieutenant Seresin," you responded with a playful grin, "it seems like you've just won yourself two eager co-pilots for that future tour of yours."
The prospect of spending more time with Jake and experiencing the world of naval aviation up close had ignited a spark of anticipation within you. As he continued to chat with Aiden and Mia, effortlessly captivating them with tales of high-flying adventures, you couldn't help but appreciate the sincerity in his demeanor. The beach, once a stage for the breathtaking airshow, now held the promise of more extraordinary moments to come.
With a subtle twinkle in his pale green eyes, he stood up and straightened his posture to his full height, easily taller than you by more than a few inches. He turned his attention back to you, a mischievous smile playing on his lips.
"You know," he began, his pale green eyes locking onto yours, "meeting someone as captivating as you wasn't part of the airshow program today. Consider me pleasantly surprised."
A warm flush crept across your cheeks as you chuckled at his smooth remark. Jake continued, his voice carrying the lilt of his unmistakable southern drawl, "I was thinking, maybe when I'm not up in the skies, we could grab a coffee or a drink. Talk about something other than planes and maneuvers, you know?"
The subtle invitation hung in the air, and you found yourself nodding, unable to suppress a growing smile.
"I'd like that," you replied, your eyes meeting his with a shared sense of anticipation.
“How about you share your number with me? That way, we can figure out when to meet up again. And it saves you from having to try and track me down on a Naval base."
Feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation, you retrieved your phone, fingers tapping out the digits as you exchanged contact information. Jake reciprocated, a grin playing on his lips as he entered your number into his phone. The exchange felt like a subtle promise, a digital tether that connected two individuals eager to navigate beyond the boundaries of the beach encounter.
With phones back in pockets, there was a shared acknowledgment that this exchange wasn't just about convenience but a mutual interest in seeing where this connection could lead. As the warm sunlight cascaded down over you, your niece and nephew’s muffled giggles and whispers in the air, and the promise of future messages and potential meetings lingering, it left you both with a sense of excitement for what lay ahead.
"Well, it looks like it's time for me and these two little aviators to head out," you remarked with a playful glint in your eyes.
The prospect of saying goodbye brought a hint of reluctance to the moment. With a gentle nudge, you encouraged Mia and Aiden to express their gratitude.
"Come on, you two," you said with a smile, "let's thank Lieutenant Seresin for the amazing day." The kids, still brimming with excitement, turned to Jake, expressions eager.
With genuine appreciation in their voices, Mia and Aiden chorused their thanks.
"Thank you, Lieutenant Seresin!"
Jake chuckled warmly, crouching down to their eye level. "Y’all can just call me Jake, you know. No need for all the formality, I’m only Lieutenant Seresin if my CO is around." He winked at them, his easygoing nature resonating with their youthful enthusiasm.
As the kids bid their farewells, Jake turned to you, his gaze holding a hint of something more. "Until next time, I suppose," he said, his tone carrying a mix of sincerity and anticipation.
You smiled, reciprocating the sentiment. "Absolutely. Until next time, Jake."
With a final exchange of glances and well wishes, you, Mia, and Aiden left the beach, the echoes of the airshow and the promising connection with Jake lingering in the warm California breeze. Armed with plans to coordinate with the kids' parents for a tour with Jake, and plans to schedule a date with him, you hoped this encounter marked the beginning of a connection that extended beyond the sandy shores of Coronado Beach.

metanoia. | pt 03 - forcing a smile and waving goodbye
𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨:
>> welcome, my name is 𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚, and i‘ll be your scriptwriter (^‿^✿). my story will be kind of an choose-your-own-adventure story with a poll at the end of every part, where you can vote how the story continues.
This will be honkai star rail x f!reader story with these elements: reincarnation, slow burn, i gave reader a proper personality (sry, not much customisation there), does not follow the original storyline
previous part <<< >>> next part
𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 (this is important) ;
>>> none!
the first thing you noticed was comfort. you felt good, like you were finally back in place. like you were finally back. did you really die?
you look down, looking at your skin, your hands. you caressed your face, mapping out the unique features you had. you were finally you again. but after the initial joy, came the confusion. you looked around. it was mostly empty space surrounding you, and when you looked down, you could see that you were standing on a thin layer of water, reflecting the blue sky stretching through seemingly infinity. the place was barren, naked, laying all of their secrets directly in front of you, urging you to just go on. it will be okay.
was this the border, between the life and death? did you really perish?
it was quiet here, something you so desperately missed.
but after locking your eyes with a figure, the air suddenly shifts. you didn’t know the figure, you have never seen this person in your entire life, you were so sure of that. but despite that, you still felt a connection to the weeping person as you approached them.
they had brown, choppy hair, and their attire was similar to that of the locals of the xianzhou luofu. you hesitantly step forward, trying to catch their attention. they didn’t notice you. You press your lips together, before clearing your voice.
„ are…are you okay? “
you ask, causing them to lift up their head. she looked like she was crying for a long time, her eyes bloodshot, and you could make out a light trembling in her body.
upon further inspection, you notice that she also had similar golden cracks like you. they were on her arms, and legs, like the first layer of her skin was simply … shattered. the woman clearly had way more golden cracks than you, to the point that it looked like their whole body could fall apart and crumble to the ground. Maybe that is what will happen to you. Maybe it has happened already.
„ you… “
the figure spoke, shaking. her hand slowly moved to the ground, pushing herself off the floor till she stood before you. she looked…similar. like you have seen her before. but you couldn’t quite remember where. she looked at you, a solemn expression on her face.
„ so, you are the one housing my body… “
she spoke, making you flinch. what was she talking about? you tilt your head in confusion. just as you wanted to speak up, she interrupts you, tears brimming in her eyes.
„ please… let me through the border. find my siblings and bring them back to safety, away from the suffering we endured till the end… “
suddenly, you feel a hand gripping yours, refusing to let go.
„ you will soon return, back feeling like you do not belong, so please don’t forget, okay? “
-
you feel the sunlight peeking through the curtains, tickling your face and softly urging to wake up. your vision was blurry at first, before the mapping of the ceiling slowly appearing in front of you.
a weight shifted beside you, and as you turned around, you gazed into a pool of green, softly mixing with soft tunes of yellow. he looked perplexed, eyes a bit wide, looking at you like you just came back from the dead. and well, if your dream told you anything, you really did, in some way.
for a while, you said nothing, basking in the silence, before the blonde opened his mouth.
„ fascinating… “
he muttered under his breath, observing you as you squirmed, slowly sitting up. he followed, before gently grabbing your arm, showing it to you. and you couldn’t help but gasp as you saw it;
it was completely fine. no golden scars in sight, it was almost like you were reborn. like it had regenerated. you look up to luocha.
„ it…“
„ it‘s gone, yes. “
he said, chuckling, like he himself couldn’t believe it.
„ i admit, this is nothing like everything i have seen in my entire life. you regenerated…perfectly. it‘s scary— it‘s almost like you have turned back time.“
he muttered, his hand gliding over your arm. you gulp, doing nothing but nod at his statement.
but even though this revelation surised ( and frankly, also terrified ) you, you couldn’t help but come back to the dream you had.
that crying figure…you were almost sure that it was mei lian. the real mei lian. you confirmed that when you stepped into the bathroom to freshen up, looking into the face you saw weeping in your dream last night.
siblings… she spoke of siblings, you recall. you needed to find them and bring them to safety. mei lian‘s house, you assumed. back to her family. you dried off your face, before exiting the bathroom with a now made up plan, or at least, a string to follow.
as you ventured back through the streets, luocha asked about a hundred times how you felt, if you felt anything out of the ordinary. you understood— having you turn into a mara-struck monster in the middle of the street wouldn’t be good at all. what happened last night, you two didn’t mention, a seemingly invisible contract between the two of you to not speak about that night.
after a while, you two finally made your way into the realm keeping commission. you admitted, you felt nervousness bubbling up in your soul, stepping through the door to get insight into a life you never lived.
but the moment you two stepped inside, all eyes were suddenly on you. and before you could ask what was wrong, you were immediately interrupted by a voice booming through the commission.
„ mei lian! what—“
and before you knew it, a woman stormed towards you, hugging you aggressively. you awkwardly reciprocated.
„ where have you been?! it’s been, what, two months? where—what—“
the woman sputtered, stumbling over her words, before she began to shake. you at first thought that she was angry, so you took a step back. but after closer inspection, you saw her tear strucken face, with snot dribbling from her nose. she sniffled, before embracing you again.
„ i missed you so much! “
she practically sobbed out, making you stumble slightly back from the weight being draped over you. you gulp. was…was she your friend? probably, judging from her reaction.
you let her cry for a while, all the while several people from the commission came up to you, saying how much they missed you, how glad they were that you were back.
„ it‘s good to see you again, mei. “
a young man said, patting you on the shoulder.
„ losing the personal servant of the jing yuan has been a hard blow on every single one of us. “
he said, joking about how the general of the cloud knights wanted to sent out multiple search troups to find you, only for him to be bombarded with another crisis after the other.
you gulp, letting out an awkward chuckle. so you were a servant, huh. seemingly of a very high class individual too, it seems. you gulp, before turning to luocha. You noticed that he had an unreadable expression on his face, before locking eyes with you and nodding towards the door. signalling to come outside.
you gulp, before detaching yourself from everyone, saying that you needed to speak with luocha, the man that found you in cloudford. the others just nodded, thanking the blond and promising him a bountiful reward for finding you.
you just awkwardly chuckled, before stepping outside, looking up at luocha. he had scrunched up his eyebrows, looking at you.
„ you didn’t tell them about your condition. and from my observation, it didn’t look like you remember anything either “
he said, crossing his arms. you nod. he was right. you didn’t remember any of those people, nor that jing yuan person they spoke of who you supposedly served.
„ mei lian… are you sure that you can able to return to your old life again, after such a long time? “
he asked, making you freeze. what…you-you guessed that would be hard, yes, but you could at least try, right? for mei lian? for her family?
„ plus, there is still your…special condition. if i can be honest with you, i would like to research it a bit more. we could travel together, and possibly find a cure, even, that would—i…won‘t pressure you though, don‘t worry. “
luocha exclaimed, a small smile gracing his face. you gulp. the longer you thought about it, the more you realised that he was right. you could never be the real mei lian, and do your job like her. being jing-yuan‘s personal servant is bound to be difficult as well, you presumed.
but on the other hand, you also had the real mei lian‘s request, one you need to fullfill to properly cross the border. you gulp, weighing your options.
sorry that it took so long! i have been working on a new project…but i have big plans for jing yuan and reader, so stay tuned… and please don’t forget to vote on what the reader should do next!

So I think like... when I talk about Thaumanova, when I talk about the city above it, what I really want is to open up folks to a place that's super easy to miss. The dialogue with the researcher at the entrance is possible to miss entirely if you don't stop to talk to him (it's easy to expect he'll just repeat his line he speaks when you pass him entering the area).
The place you enter is not the reactor. That was far below the space in Metrica. And it's clear, both from the survivors and from the injured/ill researcher you can talk to, that no one knew this was going to happen or even that there was a lab to begin with.
We'll probably never know the name of that lost city, or the number of people and amount of knowledge lost during the reactor meltdown.
But we do know it happened.
I like to talk about it because it's a great source for players if they want a unique origin for their asura character. The reactor meltdown happened the year before the personal story started. Hundreds lost, thousands of lives irreversibly changed. Does it drive your character to hate the Inquest more? Do they become morbidly fascinated with the research, desperate to know more about what must've been so great and important it would drive them to something that could wipe out an entire city cube in a blink?
I've got a couple of survivors myself. One who was in Lornar's Pass when the reactor went critical and found out later that day that she'd lost her entire family save a cousin, her younger siblings, and one uncle. The other was in the city, lost her little sister, and had her own magic dramatically altered as a result, though she survived.
It's partly why I've dedicated so much time to trying to flesh out what the cube may have been like. Inventing colleges that existed there based on Word of God saying there are (or at least were) more than just the three we can choose through chargen.
Musing on how the survivors must feel, thinking about if they'll ever be able to put up a memorial. It's not a damnation of the writing, per se, but it is wanting more people to know and think about it.
I think it has fantastic potential. And I like to share that.

out of curiosity, what would it mean to you for fiction to replicate the maizula dynamic? like what features are most salient?
the heart of their relationship i think is replicable to an extent in that it's this sort of rotted love where you have known each other so long and so well that you couldn't not love each other but you have known each other so long and so well that you couldn't not hate each other as well. so that integral piece is absolutely something we can find in other relationship dynamics. like the rich girl/weird friend dynamic absolutely exists.
the sibling love triangle aspect with maiko's existence is also a hugely important and compelling aspect of maizula! this is techniaclly replicable in theory in terms of you can absolutely do love triangles where two members are related, but also it's so hard to duplicate the maizula-maiko triangle because mai is supposed to love zuko, and you can interpret her as actually loving him, and he feels like he's supposed to love her too, but they don't work fundamentally because he doesn't want to understand the worst parts of her, doesn't even want to admit that they exist, and she is so horribly caught up in azula who makes her feel so alive by acknowledging and knowing and seeing all these parts of her and bringing them out even more that she could say she chooses zuko because it's the right thing to do in terms of both heteronormativity and what choosing zuko represents, but i don't think realistically mai can actually turn away from azula and everything she's ever known and hated and loved and wanted to leave her alone and not known how to live without. not without regrets.
i think it's also so hard to replicate the way that their individual characters are and come together in the ship as a whole. like azula being a prodigious princess with such an insane relationship with gender and having such a tragic domestic origin and mai being a noblegirl who is so sullen and depressed and dead inside and has such an awful domestic life as well and who has to obey azula's orders but also absolutely doesn't do that because the power dynamic of their relationship is so complex by complete accident that while azula is higher ranking than mai socially and financially and in the military sense, mai absolutely has more power on an interpersonal level. that's something that you see a lot in lesser degrees in media with toxic female friendships sure, but never to the extent that one of the parties can literally have the other executed if she wants to, but she chooses not to do so even when she imprisons her former friend.
i wrote a mini essay on this here, but the way in which they play with the rich girl/weird friend dynamic is also INSANE on a level i have yet to see anyone else touch really except maybe rhaenicent.
speaking of other posts i've made abt their dynamic being so fascinating, this one about the "i love zuko more than i fear you" line vs what atla's show canon actually demonstrates is something i think is vital to understanding what makes them so insane. and i do think it's unique, if only because of what the narrative wants to tell you vs what it actually shows you.
also, one of the most important things which i touched a little on earlier is just... the politics of atla as a setting for their relationship. that makes it 10x more compelling that azula is this tragic figure who is on the completely wrong side of history, a child soldier who fights for imperialism and racism and xenophobia because she has been indoctrinated and abused and made into a weapon, and mai is someone who fought alongside with her until it inconvenienced her to do so, then switched sides in the name of love without ever actually analyzing or critiquing her own beliefs about what her country was doing. mai chooses the good and moral side by choosing zuko (who also doesn't actually reflect internally and... gets to kind of just keep doing a friendlier imperialism when we look at the comics and lok, but that's another topic), but does she actually want that? does she actually believe in that? has she actually let azula go? the comics can try to whitewash her morality more by pretending she cares abt tom-tom and she's totally reformed, but the show doesn't actually support that, and with no material in-between to show us mai's redemption beyond her betraying azula, not because she cares abt what's good and right but because she cares abt zuko, we as an audience have no real reason to believe that.
so yeah, maizula is endlessly fascinating to me, and i wish a ship would be more interesting than them

I just find that last part so funny to compare pride if Otto with. Pride If "Otto was forced into destroying the kingdom for Subaru" vs Envy If "Otto was stopped from destroying the empire for Subaru" I'd love for those two to be able to talk.
haah i love how you quoted my own otto bdsm post... HAH (it is once again funny to me that ive opened pandoras box on this blog man........ now i get bdsm asks.... literally a dream come true and none of my mutuals will let me live it down BHAHA)
anyway!!! yeah yeah pride if otto vs envy otto are soo soo funny to compare <3 pfft i think ive seen you around in the comment section of my pride otto multichapter fic (ty once again for the nice comments and cool asks :O !!) but no yeah like pride and main otto are really funny. but the parallels too are super interesting..... you summarized them really well pfft.
like.... the way pride otto is Forced to do these things for pridebaru. like of course pride otto barely gets any screentime but theres stuff implied yknow? like he has to meet with subaru often, hes the messenger boy of sorts between subaru and russell fellow, otto also delivers the poison that kills julius, otto also dies somehow off screen before the climax of pride if.... and then main otto over here Choosing repeatedly to follow subaru and die for subaru and do all these sorts of things for subaru HAH - the contrast is really really strong!!
like of course wrath if otto is also a debt slave like pride if otto, but pride if otto's his own flavor of unique just bc hes forced to stay in proximity to subaru when he either may not want to or he feels similar to subaru (who goes "maybe in another life we couldve made good friends, but this Isnt that life")!! seeing how jaded and empty pride if otto is is super fascinating, bc you can kind of see the origins of it in main otto's tendency for cynicism and ruthlessness !!
but also on another level i feel like pride otto would be soooo confused and disgusted hearing about main otto. pride otto might be out here like "so not only are you friends with this guy but youre his boytoy too???? lmfao you loser" HAH
but yeah i think itd be fun for them to meet. pride if otto, the otto who never made friends and only learned to harden his heart and be forced to be an accomplice to horrible crimes...... main otto, the otto who made friends and is so so painfully devoted but it drives him to do drastic things some times.... crimes in the name of love versus being forced to assist in it.... like main otto learned how to make friends, learned the power of friendship with other people, but his loyalty is "poisoning" him while pride otto supplied the poison that kills julius...... ough......... and pride otto dies at the end...... all alone.... poisoned by other people, poisoned by what he had to do.....
but also i think my favorite bit of pride otto trivia is that word of god thing that pride otto took advantage of the fire and went to go kill russell fellow before he died.... specifically to avenge frufoo, his ground dragon.... like. ough. pain. absolute pain. pride ottos last act was to kill his main abuser??? to avenge his one and only friend????? im gonna bawl my eyes out HAHHA. but it seems that the power of friendship may have briefly won for a second there.... :,))) like im sure ottos most definitely killing russell fellow also bc thats Literally the guy that enslaved him but - the way its specifically noted that ottos main reason was Frufoo. im sobbing on the floor.
anyway i completely forgot where i was going with this but in conclusion pride otto is such a guy. 20 seconds of screentime??? dude stomped over my heart in 20 seconds. and if he met main otto i think he'd either go "wtf is wrong with you why would you do all of this for subaru??? him??? that CLOWN???? why???" or pride otto would wanna strangle main otto for being so lucky HAH. pride otto learns frufoo is still alive and well in main route and pride otto instantly launches himself at main otto like a feral cat -
#re:zero#rezero#otto suwen#pride if#ask#im reaaaally normal about pride if otto. i prommys. i totally dont think about the implications#the implications of “he killed russell fellow to avenge frufoo” IM GONNA BE SICK.... URGHHH.. PURE AGONY......#i do think the fun part of characters who change A Lot in the ifs is examining them and comparing their behavior to what we know about them#in main route to decipher what couldve happened and how they couldve developed to the point where theyre like That in the ifs!!!#very very fun. its like a mystery game HAH

Sorry this took a hot minute to answer! I had to prepare for all this gushing because oh boy did I know this was gonna be a long one. Thank you so much. I love getting to talk about my Prowl ❤️
[1] What are your pet names/nicknames for each other?
I love this one, I actually talked about it in a server I'm in just a few days ago! So, I'm personally not creative with nicknames. They just don't come to me naturally. I'm one of those people that just do the standard old dear/darling/babe/(my)love. I do mean it with all my heart though – and for what it's worth, they are special to Prowl, because these are human terms of endearment. It's what we call each other. That in itself makes them infinitely more meaningful when said to a Cybertronian.
Also, I am quite fond of Prowler. Prowl just has to live with that one. He's not getting rid of it. Sorry. And yes, I got that one from Jazz.
As for Prowl, he calls me kitten. Please, I want to be called kitten so bad, I'm just a little kittycat. Only by him though; you do have to be really special to be allowed to call me that, and only Prowl has the privilege. I'm like a lap cat to him. Literally. I can nap there while he meditates. That's my spot.
[26] What is your favourite physical feature of your f/o? What’s their favourite for you?
Neither of us are the type to focus on physical features too much. For me, it's never even been a factor. Prowl is beautiful in my eyes, but I don't love him because he is beautiful; he is beautiful because I love him. And as such, it's impossible to pinpoint just one thing I like best. But if I did have to choose, it would have to be his eyes, because they are special for me and only I get to see them. He doesn't take his visor off around anyone else. Those are just mine.
As for him, it's quite similar. There's no one thing he likes best; it's all of me. In all of my humanness. That's the whole thing, really. He loves how human I am, how unique and alien and organic. All my little human traits, my behaviors, just the way my body works, it fascinates him to no end, even after years together. Every freckle and mole, every hair growing where it has no business growing, all those little things nature just does that are nearly incomprehensible to a Cybertronian, who are forged to be sleek metal, designed to be whatever they are meant to be from the start, without any imperfections or deviations. Even the parts other humans may consider unsightly or gross, Prowl loves them all the same because they're a part of nature, unable to ever be controlled, and so unapologetically me. Besides, having not been raised among humans with their own societal standards, Prowl has no reason to share our opinions on what is or isn't acceptable. Even the grossest bodily functions are simply a part of being organic, and as such a part of the beauty of life. And while other Cybertronians may find us disgusting as a whole, that very much includes a flip side where, once you accept organic beings as they are, nothing about them is truly bad.
I always like to compare it to the way I love my cat. She's tiny and soft and so undeniably alive, purring and making little breathing sounds and letting me rest my head atop her fur to listen to her heartbeat and her tummy sounds. And all of those are proof that she is alive, and that makes them part of her, and so precious to me. Nothing she could ever do would ever be truly gross to me either. She tends to miss her toilet on a regular basis. She farts in my face. She's licked the inside of my mouth on more occasions than I can count. But she's just a little creature, and I love her endlessly.
It's like that for Prowl with me. I'm just a little creature to him. I'm soft and small and different and alien in the most beautiful and enchanting way. Sometimes he just gets lost in thought while holding me because of how utterly small I am compared to him. How squishy my little body is to his hands made of unyielding metal. And yet, there are far more things we have in common than there could ever be things that set us apart. And in some way, that's really the most fascinating part. We are the same in every way that counts.

Watched Michael Mann’s Manhunter

(No, he didn’t choose the title)
So I’ve been in both a Hannibal mood and a Michael Mann mood recently, so I thought I’d take a look at the original adaptation of the original novel. And I gotta say, it’s very interesting to look at it both isolated and in the context of everything that came afterwards
First of all, it’s got a great cast. Unlike the sequels there aren’t really any names in the cast outside of Brian Cox, but everyone gives a great performance, especially William Petersen as Will Graham. Whenever he’d do the character’s signature monologues while talking to himself, it’s nothing but him talking directly to the camera in single takes, he doesn’t have the luxury of cuts or montages to fall back on. Brian Cox’s Hannibal Lecktor is the most understated version, but that doesn’t mean he’s missing the kind of fruity cattiness that makes him so fascinating to watch. The two of them have great chemistry that definitely does have hints of the homoerotic, but I just wish I was able to watch more of them. The killer who they’ve reunited over, Francis Dolarhyde, is played by Tom Noonan, is also a real treat. He’s so tall and imposing, and a great antagonist. One of the flaws of the movie is how little time is spent on him. (Ironically the book has the opposite problem, having page after page describe every single injustice Dolarhyde has faced as a child to the point of being cartoonishly tragic.) As I haven’t finished the Hannibal show, I can’t comment on its portrayal of the Red Dragon, so I have to give it to the 2002 movie for the best version of him. All of the rest of the cast, such as Dennis Farina, Kim Greist, and Joan Allen are all extremely natural and do a good job even if they aren’t as memorable as future performances in the series
From a filmmaking perspective, it’s beautiful. Michael Mann and cinematographer Dante Spinotti have beautiful imagery that they love to linger on, the score is that kind of 80s synth sound that horror and thrillers have severely lacked in the last few decades, and it all builds up to a movie that has the perfect amount of style and substance.
I’ll compare it to the other movies in the series that I’ve seen, Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon. It’s very interesting to watch compared to the former, since that one is unique in that it goes for a very naturalistic visual style, which pairs well with the more animated cast. And then Red Dragon makes the cast even more animated somehow, and has become perhaps the most stylized thing outside of the TV series, though I think it backfired into becoming style over substance, which is odd considering it has the same source material and cinematographer, but 16 years and a worse director make all the difference. Mann’s iconic level of detail may be a bit overboard, to the point where most of the crew left before wrapping and the ending is very noticeably cobbled together and short, but you won’t see Brett Ratner have people ride an elevator in a building several blocks away timed exactly to rise as Will figures out the killer’s motive, being basically a Lightbulb moment.
All in all, if you’re a fan of either Hannibal Lecter, thrillers, or just movies in general, give this a watch, it’s very much a hidden gem

CHAPTER 6
FILE 05 IT'S MY TURN
I shared ‘almost’ all the information I had about this world with Sans. Do you think I was being too hasty? No. Giving Sans the truth about his world—or what you could call Undertale—was the perfect choice. Delaying the revelation would have been a waste of my time. Honestly, there’s nothing interesting about those clichéd strategies.
This is how I take control of his mind. Sans seeks the truth, untainted by hidden lies, and so this is the method I choose to fulfill his desire. Not like it? You can protest, but allow me to explain: despair born from a painful truth holds a unique beauty of its own. This is how I wield the brush, delivering that beauty into Sans' mind. I will unravel his sanity as though driving a series of precise, deadly strikes.
A single, decisive blow to destroy him completely.
The truth is sharper than any blade. Watch as it cuts deeper than lies ever could.. Why lie when it only leads to failure? That is a pathetic approach. I have never lied to Sans, not since the moment we met. I have merely revealed the truths he wished to uncover. And I am certain that, deep down, Sans knows this.
And then ... just look at him now. He’s frozen in place, utterly motionless. His expression reflects a horror he never wished to confront. Ah, this expression—it’s always an amusing sight for me. I never tire of witnessing how someone becomes so fragile and weak in the face of collapse. I’ve been incredibly patient in this game of manipulation, and finally, I’ve achieved what I wanted.
Not everything, though. There’s still so much left to attain.
I must be patient and play for a little longer.
If you want to keep playing with me, Sans, I wouldn’t mind. Feel how every game you start will only overwhelm and corner you. I’ll deliver a defeat far more painful than all of this. But if destruction like this has already broken you this much—perhaps I was expecting too much from you, Sans.
But no matter, this is only the beginning of everything. The game has just started, and Sans has barely begun his journey. Let’s watch a little longer.
“Sans? Sans, hey Sans.” I tried calling his name, snapping my fingers in front of him. Had he fainted while standing? Impossible. Yet, Sans didn’t budge at all; his expression remained stiff. It felt as if his brain’s nerves had disconnected from his body, turning him into a broken robot—staring into the air with hollow eyes.
I tried peeking into his system—and how fascinating it was. A chaotic beauty wreaking havoc on his core. The lines of code controlling his soul, hidden in the shadows, were working tirelessly to repair the damage. But... poor you, Sans, you’ll never escape the monster I’ve created within you.
I couldn’t stop the satisfied smile spreading across my face.
His system was struggling so hard to bear the trauma it had just experienced—desperately trying to patch up wounds that refused to close, worsening into irreparable damage.
‘Sweet lies and painful truths. Both destroy in their own way—with their own unique beauty,’ I thought, watching Sans, who still looked utterly shaken. There was no light in his eyes anymore. Only darkness—despair devouring him slowly from within.
It must be overwhelming to process all the information I just gave you, Sans. I know how you feel right now—confused, angry, lost, afraid—all swirling together, like waves smashing rocks to pieces in their brutality. I could see the collapse of the world you always believed was your ‘home.’
“...Get me ice cream. Strawberry.”
“Huh?”
I snapped out of my thoughts. Sans was looking at me with an eerily stiff expression. Ice cream? What? Has his brain finally snapped?
His voice sounded like a broken instrument—cracked and jarring—and had he just ordered me? How bold of him.
"How polite of you, Sans."
I squinted at him, but he didn’t react at all. He just stood there, waiting for me to give him the ice cream he asked for. What’s with this childish behavior… oh wait, that’s just how he is.
But still…
"Ice cream…" he said again, his tone utterly devoid of life.
Now this is interesting.
I glanced back into his system—hooh, now this was even more fascinating. His system was trying harder than ever to repair the damage from the severe trauma he had just endured. It was like watching a scrambled mess of code spiraling out of control, numbers shifting aggressively, rewriting themselves, breaking apart, and rewriting again… His system was overwhelmed, yet relentlessly trying to fix everything.
This kind of thing had never happened before—only NPCs with extraordinarily advanced intelligence could pull this off. But why Sans? What made him special? He wasn’t designed with intelligence of this caliber… So how? Why was his system making him seem so alive, brimming with hope? It was carrying complex emotions, empathy, and almost—
"Ice cream… Hey, are you not listening to me? Are you deaf? Stupid? Idiot?"
Oops… look at that. His glare was razor-sharp, and he stared at me in such a terrifyingly intense way. His tone had turned cruel and threatening, speaking to me as though I were his servant.
Sans clearly wasn’t going to do anything until I gave him what he wanted. What am I now, his dad? His mom? Well, if it’s just for ice cream, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to humor him.
"One strawberry ice cream, ready to serve! Enjoy, Sans."
I handed him the ice cream, and he took it immediately, his face devoid of any joy. He looked like a completely useless NPC—pathetic and weak.
Come on, Sans… don’t act like this. Give me something more entertaining. Rage, run away… anything—just give me something to break my boredom.
For ten minutes straight, Sans did nothing but focus on the ice cream in his hands—he looked like he was enjoying it way too much. I even considered grabbing some for myself, but the idea felt ridiculous. Me? Eating ice cream? That would totally ruin my cool vibe. Still, I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed at Sans and that ice cream—ugh, it looked so good. I really wanted to try it, but seriously, I’d die before letting myself sink to that level.
Alright, calm down. Let Sans have his moment with the ice cream. After the mess earlier, I guess I could use a break too.
"Maybe a cup of hot black coffee would do the trick," I muttered, letting out a short sigh. I felt strangely tired even though my body was perfectly fine. Whatever. Overthinking is a waste of time.
Focus.
Then, like magic, a cup of coffee appeared in my hand. Just some code, nothing fancy, but enough to give me a little boost.
"Bitter..."
The taste hit my tongue, sharp and harsh. So, this is what bitterness is? What even makes something taste good or bad? Sweet or bitter? I didn’t have the programming to fully grasp why flavors work the way they do. I knew the concepts, the words—but actually feeling them? That’s a whole different story.
"You look pathetic, idiot."
"What?!"
Sans had finished his ice cream, though a little bit had smeared on his jacket. I was just about to point it out when he shot me a glare so sharp it could cut steel. Pure disgust. Seriously, Sans? That’s just uncalled for.
"How about a simple 'thank you for the ice cream,' Sans?" I said, trying to keep my cool.
Sans clicked his tongue, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "How about you let me be the ungrateful monster I am? Got a problem? Go cry to your mommy."
Wow. Okay. That stung a little. But as much as his words annoyed me, something else caught my eye.
I noticed something quite fascinating—Sans had become much more negative. No jokes, no lighthearted comments; instead, he was saying things that the old Sans would never say. Was this his system’s way of coping with the damage? Adapting and building defenses using the trauma festering in his mind?
A beautiful execution!
It made me want to push him even further. To press harder with manipulation and relentless mental attacks—I wanted to see just how long he could hold onto his sanity. It would be thrilling if I could crack open his mind right now and uncover all the answers.
“Are you just going to stand there like an idiot who doesn’t know his way home? Say something, Rays. Don’t keep me waiting and make me look as foolish as you,” he said, glaring at me with a sharp, irritated expression. His tone was filled with venom and ugly emotion.
“Calm down, Sans. How do you feel now?” I asked, attempting to soothe him, even though I knew it was hopeless.
“Terrible. Do you expect me to smile right now?” he snapped, furiously wiping the ice cream stain off his jacket with jerky, impatient movements. He looked like a total mess—like someone who had just outrun a debt collector.
I shook my head and gave him a wide smile. “Come on, cheer up! Smile, Sans… you know, smiles can heal anything and you—”
“Shut up, Rays.”
His tone hit me like a freezing wind, biting and deadly, blowing in every direction with unchecked ferocity. It carried the searing rage of boiling water, creating an oppressive, threatening aura. If I were just an ordinary person here, I’d probably be on my knees, trembling like a fool.
“Pull yourself together, Sans. You’ve been given the precious truth about your little world. If all you do is sulk like some weak, pitiful creature, then I’m truly disappointed in you.”
“I don’t care. I just want to go home and sleep.”
I froze at his response.
Sans… he looked utterly defeated.
Wait a second—was this really how he felt right now? Or was it just part of his strategy?
But his expression told a different story—clear as day, it was the face of someone who had completely given up. Defeated. Broken. The sharp, clever, and witty Sans was nowhere to be found. All that remained was a powerless shell of him. Had I been betrayed by my own expectations?
No. That couldn’t be. Sans was stronger than this. He had to be—
“Send me back home. I want to sleep... I’m done.”
Haha...
That couldn’t be right, could it?
Sans looked at me, his gaze sharp and unsettling. It sent a mix of excitement and discomfort through me. That was both good news and bad news. What was he planning now?
“You like games, don’t you?” He didn’t hold my gaze for long. Turning his back to me, he continued, “Then let’s play. I don’t mind, Rays.” His tone carried an oddly subtle determination, like a flicker of fire reigniting. I caught a glimmer of something—hope—in his voice.
I couldn’t stop the grin spreading across my face. His challenge thrilled me.
“You’re going to regret this, Sans.”
He chuckled, a sound so dark and menacing that it sent a jolt of excitement through me. “Game on. I’ll snap your neck and toss you in the trash, Rays.”
“Well, that’s brutal.”
“And you’re a masochist.”

This new story of Gaston’s redemption weaves a fascinating narrative of growth, remorse, and second chances. Here’s a summary and some additions to help shape the world you’re building:
Title: Redemption’s Kiss
After Gaston falls from the castle and survives the deadly fall, his life seems to be at an end—until Agnes, a Gypsy healer from the outskirts of the kingdom, finds him and nurses him back to health. Though many in the village call her a “witch,” Agnes is simply a woman skilled in herbs, potions, and remedies. Gaston, once rude and condescending to her, now finds himself humbled and remorseful, apologizing for the cruelty he had shown her by calling her an “old hag.”
Agnes, sensing a deeper sorrow within him, shares a vision of the future—a future where Belle, whom Gaston once obsessed over, has found true love with the Beast, now Adam, and they are expecting a child. She reveals that Gaston’s actions have doomed him to remain a villain unless he changes, and, through the power of a magical mirror, she sends him back in time to confront his younger self.
The Journey of Redemption
Gaston, now a broken man, stands before his younger self—confused, angry, and not entirely believing that this older man is truly him. Yet, Gaston agrees to listen, realizing that his actions have caused so much harm. The older Gaston urges him to stop his villainous path before it’s too late, warning that he must hide for a while and repent for what he has done to Belle and Adam.
In this moment, the older Gaston tells his younger self that forgiveness may not come easily, but there is still time for change. The younger Gaston, overwhelmed by the idea of redemption, agrees to follow the guidance of his older self, becoming more self-reflective and aware of the damage he caused.
A New Name, A New Beginning
In the future, Gaston, now adopting the name “Allaster” to hide his true identity, seeks redemption through kindness and humility. He appears at the christening of Magali, Belle and Adam’s daughter. Magali, who has inherited the Beast’s horns, has always felt different and shunned by the locals for her unusual appearance. Gaston, or rather, Allaster, now sees beauty in her uniqueness and approaches her with kindness, encouraging her to embrace who she is.
Belle, however, recognizes Allaster from his previous life and orders him to leave, warning that Adam, her husband, would never forgive him. Gaston pleads with Belle, explaining that he has changed and is no longer the man who once tried to destroy their family. But Belle is unmoved, and Gaston retreats, seeking comfort from his older self.
The Transformation Continues
The older Gaston, now seeing how deeply his younger self has changed, encourages him to be patient and continue his efforts. After some time, Gaston, with the guidance of his older self, finally approaches Magali again, this time with genuine respect and care. He courts her properly—through meaningful gestures, respectful dates, and heartfelt conversations. Slowly, Magali opens her heart to him, touched by his sincerity.
Absolutely! Here’s how the transformation from Young Gaston to Older Gaston (or “Gaston, redeemed”) unfolds, with both versions of Gaston interacting and ultimately merging into one character, symbolizing the transformation of the man he could have been versus the man he chooses to be.
Title: Redemption’s Kiss (continued)
The magic mirror, glowing with ancient power, transported Gaston back in time to confront his younger self. The older Gaston stood before his mirror image, a man hardened by his mistakes, filled with regret and longing for redemption.
Older Gaston (looking at Young Gaston with a mix of sorrow and resolve): “You don’t know who I am yet… but I am you. I’ve lived your life. And I’ve seen the end of it. I’ve seen the pain… the hate… the destruction. And it breaks me. Because I know you can be more than this.”
Young Gaston (laughs, crossing his arms): “You’re not me! You’re just some crazy old fool. I’m going to be the one to rule the world, marry Belle, and nothing’s going to stop me. Who are you to tell me otherwise?”
Older Gaston (voice filled with quiet intensity): “I am you… I’m the man you’ll become if you don’t stop. A man who loses everything—everything—because he was too proud and too stubborn to listen. You’ll destroy the people you care about, including the woman you claim to love. And you’ll be alone in the end.”
Young Gaston (pauses, doubt creeping into his expression): “What are you talking about? I don’t want to end up like you. Alone and pitiful.”
Older Gaston (softly): “I don’t want that either. I never wanted it. But this is what will happen if you keep walking this path. That’s why I’m here. To show you that you can change. That you must change.”
As the two Gastons stand there, the tension between them is palpable. One is filled with youthful arrogance and confidence, while the other is burdened by regret and the wisdom of experience. The magical essence of the mirror begins to swirl around them, its power compelling them to merge into a singular form—Gaston, reformed and redeemed.
Young Gaston (looking into Older Gaston’s eyes, a flash of vulnerability showing): “You’re really me… aren’t you?”
Older Gaston (nodding, his voice soft yet firm): “Yes, I am. And you are me. But we are more than this. We can choose to be more. I didn’t understand that before, but now I do.”
The mirror shimmers, and in a flash of light, both Gastons are caught in the whirlwind of magic. The younger, prideful Gaston begins to transform—his body and mind altering, not just physically, but emotionally. The arrogance melts away as his heart softens, the years of bitterness and pride dissolving into something gentler, more compassionate.
Young Gaston (his voice changing, softer, more reflective): “I… I don’t want to be the man who hurts everyone. I want… I want to be better.”
Older Gaston (smiling, a mix of relief and pride): “Then you’ll become him. We’ll become him together.”
The transformation is complete. The man standing before the magic mirror is no longer the brash, reckless young man, nor the broken older one. He is now Gaston—the redeemed version, a fusion of his past and present, no longer consumed by pride or hatred but tempered by humility and the desire to make amends.
Gaston (now fully aware of his past and his future, he steps back from the mirror): “This is who I am now. No more lies, no more arrogance. It’s time to make things right. For Belle. For Adam. And for myself.”
With a newfound resolve, Gaston (now fully integrated as both his younger and older selves) travels back to the future, where he confronts Magali and her parents, Belle and Adam. His path is no longer one of conquest and pride, but of love, patience, and healing.
Gaston (approaching Belle, his voice steady): “Belle… I’ve come to apologize. For everything I’ve done. For the pain I caused. I wasn’t the man I should’ve been. But I am now, and I want to prove to you that I’ve changed.”
Belle (watching him warily, her heart conflicted): “You have no idea how much harm you’ve caused, Gaston. How much you’ve hurt me… and Adam. How can we trust you now?”
Gaston (his eyes sincere, full of regret): “I don’t expect you to forgive me right away. But I’ll prove myself. I’ll do whatever it takes to earn your trust. To earn the chance to make things right.”
Magali, watching from a distance, sees something in Gaston’s eyes that gives her hope—he is not the man who hurt her mother, nor the man who threatened her father. Instead, he is someone different—someone who, despite his past, is seeking to change.
Magali (softly, to herself): “Maybe… he’s telling the truth. Maybe there is hope for him.”
Over time, Gaston earns the trust of Belle and Adam through quiet acts of kindness, showing up at their home, working with the villagers, and proving that his redemption is not just about words, but about actions. Slowly, he earns their forgiveness, though it is a journey filled with setbacks and moments of doubt.
Adam (finally, after a long period of hesitation, speaks to Gaston): “You’ve worked hard, Gaston. I never thought I’d see the day where I’d accept you as a part of this family, but… perhaps you have changed. And I suppose there’s nothing left for me to do but welcome you in.”
The wedding day arrives. Magali accepts Gaston’s love and asks for his commitment, not to her mother, but to her—she sees the change in him, the sincerity in his efforts, and finally agrees to be with him.
Magali (smiling as she takes his hand): “I see now that you’re the man my mother always wished you could be. The man who can truly love and protect us. You’ve earned my heart, Gaston.”
Their wedding is celebrated by friends and family, old and new. Lumière, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and all the enchanted servants cheer as the couple vows to face the future together—no longer haunted by the past.
Gaston (to Belle, on the day of the wedding, with a gentle smile): “Thank you… for believing that I could be someone better.”
Belle (with a proud but teary smile): “You’ve made it happen, Gaston. You’ve earned it.”
Eventually, Belle, though hesitant at first, begins to see the change in Gaston (Allaster), and her approval is earned. Adam, still wary but moved by the change, asks for an apology from Gaston for his past wrongdoings, which he offers willingly. After a few months of proving himself, Adam finally accepts Gaston as a son-in-law.
A New Beginning
Gaston and Magali marry in a beautiful ceremony, surrounded by friends and family—including Lumière, Cogsworth, Madame de Garderobe, Mrs. Potts, and Chip, all of whom have grown to care for him. The kingdom celebrates their union, and the couple begins a life together, hopeful for the future.
As Gaston and Magali prepare for their first child, their story becomes a testament to the power of redemption. In the future, their son, Gil, and daughter, Mahaut, grow up as part of the next generation, perhaps destined to break free from the shadows of their parents’ pasts.
The legacy of the villain, once feared and loathed, has now transformed into one of love, growth, and redemption.
This story explores the idea of second chances, showing that even those who once walked the darkest paths can find a way to change and be embraced by the future. The journey of Gaston is now one of humility and learning, offering a powerful message about the possibility of redemption through self-reflection, kindness, and love.

Etymology nonnie here!
I realized I had so much to say it was better to do different asks. Already the last one was very long. But most of it didn't focused on the new update (funnily enough, I had more to say about the previous one). I still have some things to say about the previous update, but I pretend to speak about the one you pushed yesterday. Also, apologies for not messaging yesterday. I had to go to classes when you released the update, so I only got to read it quite late. Today I probably wouldn't have been able to write you anything, but I found the time amongst the things I have to do.
About this new update. I loved how the interactions with the RO's went. Now, as you know, my MC (Indiana) is romancing Imre. And while I expected lust (and there is some), I think it has been very cute as of now. And evident. Since both Nia and Lorcan have showed some reaction to it.
Probably the most surprising thing for me was the phone call with Nia. The way I would love to have her POV of the scene. My MC calls so excited about the case, realizing that Sammy's murder doesn't fit the case profiling that they had been doing (not only due to gender, but also age). Like, we cannot go all Criminal Minds in this one, boys. At least, not yet. So, what would Nia think of this? MC, always so apathetic and seemingly uncaring about the world, so invested on a murder investigation? It's at once so suspicious and intriguing. Is this because of guilt? Out of murderous fascination with death? A weird, and probably ineffective attempt to clear his name? Nia's head must be full of theories.
But there is also the fact that MC seems to be so compatible and friendly with Imre. Like, I do suspect Nia told Imre to keep distant more to protect MC rather than because she actually believed they wouldn't get along. But I also believe she also thought the latter had some validity. So, it must be shocking that MC seems so excited and receptive to Imre (at least mine is, I know not all MC's are). Probably, a part of her is also worried about how everything is going to end.
There is also an attempt to reconnect with MC. But is a careful and, not exactly hesitant, yet not entirely trusting. Which makes sense, of course, from her perspective. Once again I would love to have her POV. Even though I'm romancing Imre, nowadays is her friendship with MC the relationship that intrigues me the most. It's in such a complicated and unique situation.
This always happens to me, but I just cannot wait for the next update. And this one released yesterday. I just had to mention it.
Then, there's Lorcan. He's so fun. So petty, so immature, so dumb. I love him. The more I see of him the more I'm convinced I have to do another playthrough where I romance him. Yet it comes with the trouble of designing a different MC than my Indiana, and that means I'm back at the name choosing crisis again. Alas, I'm not surprised.
Also, the case. The more we learn, the less my theories seem to hold in place. As of now, everything points to a supernatural entity, or multiple murderers, or a cult. Maybe all three. The trouble is that I don't know how to connect these with any of the other suspects I had. Of course, we also have very little information, so any theory is subject to be disproven or strengthened as we gather more data and clues.
Finally, there is some things I wanted to comment about the previous update, and the character creator. I still find funny you used golden beryl as a color choice. Even though I know what you meant, I still imagined my MC as a Simpson, given how yellow that color is. Yet, in the previous update, when MC is looking at himself in the mirror, you used another descriptor I think it's more accurate, by saying the skin tone is olive (now, olive has its own set of issues, as it can refer to both shade and undertone and mean different things, but that's English fault not yours, dear Jude).
I think I mentioned once I wanted to do an anti-Imre initially. Now, I must admit, my love for Imre has escaped the confines of this IF and flooded over others. As, all my MCs are heavily inspired by Imre's appearance. Including my dear Indiana Crown. I think there is one demo in which I even named my MC Imre (I think I told you once already I fancy him in part because his name fascinates me). So my Indiana has olive skin, brown hair, and blue (technically indigo, so it's a bit more purple than blue) eyes. Which reminds me the fact that a lot of people date others very similar to them. And, in the case of gay couples, sometimes they look like clones. Here is not so much the case since Indiana is lithe, I imagine him shorter than Imre, and has plenty of scars. Including at least two on his neck (both the nasty one from 1992, and the one from when he sliced it as a child with a knife).
There another thing I wanted to comment. About child MC being in beauty pageants. I don't know if I skimmed over that part before, or what was I thinking I didn't notice that. And it's so fascinating. Not only it shows how the Crowns, and Prudence specifically, care about appearances so much. As well as how abusive they can be. But also that MC was, at least back then, beautiful enough to participate in such things.
That said, I just have to know how those went. No matter how cute MC may have been… He has dead eyes. How creepy must he have looked! Perhaps MC was a bit like a doll back then. Beautiful, yet dead inside.
There is also the reinforcement of distance and the asymmetrical relationship between Prudence and MC, as well as her potential lack of love towards him. After all, most mothers wouldn't force their little kid to stop saying Mommy to say Mother instead. Like, there are mothers who get sad when their kids go from mommy to mom. So the fact that Prudence is deliberately creating such instance does give a good idea of how she doesn't want to he close to MC.
The Crown family is truly a mess, huh?
Ah I was waiting for more in-depth reactions to the update! I feel like no one has given me any thought on what they thought of the complete 180 the investigation gets because of Sammy (all I've gotten are what's the word to the question Imre asks 😭)
What I love about MC's relationship with Nia is that it is riveting both as a romance and friendship, sometimes I feel friendships are less worked on than romances in some IFs so I'm glad you like it
Also Lorcan is the group comedian I gathered and he wasn't even looking to be he's completely serious when he asks the poop ask 💀
Yeah so MC never won those pageants but they were always in second place and it had to do with their lack of charisma and talent on the stage, the dead eyes were another disadvantage. I imagine to look like a creepy porcelain doll
#lowkey flattered you used Imre's name for another character#etymology nonnie#his impact is amazing#impressions#Imre#Nia#Lorcan#episode 4#part 2#we wretched creatures

A Review: That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime Volumes 1

Author: Fuse Illustrator: Taiki Kawakami & Mitz Vah Publishers: Kodansha Comics Age Group: Teen Genre: Isekai Type: Manga
Content Warnings: death; very slight naughty thoughts
Spoilers ahead
Plot
Average, unexceptional, 37-year-old salayman, Satoru Mikami has found himself in a gooey situation. After getting killed while saving his coworkers’ lives, he gets a new lease on life—just not the life he was expecting. He has been reincarnated in a fantasy world as a magic-wielding slime creature. Under his new name “Rimuru Tempest,” this once-normal man will have to learn to survive in this strange, new world—and with his incredible wit, affable nature, and a few powerful allies, he’ll quickly ooze his way into the hearts and minds of everyone he encounters along his journey.
Character Development
Rimuru is an interesting character. He’s kind of a grouch but a decent guy at the beginning. Once he becomes a slime, he’s a bit more logical and friendly.
Veldora, a dragon, is the first living entity that Rimuru encounters in his new life as a slime. Veldora is a proud dragon but kind of obnoxious. I love the duality in each of the characters. We get the expected with a twist in the development of each character. We glean a lot of Veldora’s character through the fun Veldora’s Journal at the end of the manga. It’s written in his style of thought and speaking which is very different from the rest of the manga.
Each character, including background characters, have great backstories and are important to the story. Each has a purpose. Not only that, but each character has a specific way of speaking so we get bits of their personality.
World-building
Artwork paneling is simple and doesn’t bog down each panel. Easy to follow pictures. Love that when Satoru (Rimuru) can’t see the paneling is black with white to highlight what is going on - the opposite of normal. It creates some great world building so the audience experiences everything Rimuru does as he gets used to his slime body. It also makes it easier to focus on characters with just enough background for context. The artist, Taiki Kawakami, does an excellent job of adding enough detail that the brain of the reader can fill in the rest while focusing on the story and characters.
I love that Rimuru refers to his slime life as an ectoplasmic life. It creates an interesting effect in the reader’s mind as ectoplasm is usually associated with ghosts. It’s also the name for the outer layer of the cytoplasm of amoeboid cells. The slime would be considered an amoeboid as it can change its shape much like amoeboid cells can.
Magicules are one of my favorite ways that describes how magic is in the world. They’re molecules just like oxygen or nitrogen in the air. It’s fascinating. The magic sense skills allows one to view the world using these magicules, creating sight by letting the person see the aura of all things.
Themes
Being friendly with others can bring about unexpected results. We see this when Rimuru chooses to help the Goblins. He finds a place that accepts him as he accepts them.
Observations & Predictions
It’s fabulous and creates a great dynamic between characters along with personal growth for each of them through Rimuru’s eyes.
Veldora’s Journal is like a recap but from Veldora’s point of view. It’s interesting to read because he’s got a very strong voice. We also learn bits and pieces about Rimuru we didn’t know before from the manga.
One of the things that Veldora mentions in his journal is that Rimuru is not a normal slime and always surprises him. Veldora’s observations about Rimuru is that he is a unique slime with very unique skills. As we see how Rimuru goes about his life, we see that he’ll be an OP protagonist.

interview: Exploring the New Diversity and Creativity with SUPERKIND

World's first gen A-Idol, SUPERKIND, returns with the release of their new mini-album, Profiles of the Future (Λ) : 70%. This is the group’s first comeback as a full set of seven members, including both AI members; SAEJIN and SEUNG. Their group name, SUPERKIND, is an anagram of NUKE, PRID, and S. NUKE refers to members from the virtual world, and PRID refers to members from the real world. They work together towards achieving one common goal, which is to find S, which, as of now, still remains a secret to everyone.

EUGENE (left), JDV (right)
"Beam me up (2Dx3D)" is a very cool fusion song with lyrics in Korean, English, and Japanese. Can the members share what the recording process was like and if you faced any challenges with three languages?
SiO: Since this is our first mini-album with a greater number of tracks, the recording process naturally took longer than usual. Also, because we incorporated various languages, we put a lot of thought into how to infuse the unique characteristics and vibes of this language into our music, striving to make those features come to life in our songs.
Your group is a mix of AI and real people and is new to the scene. What is it like working and having fun with each other?
JDV: I find collaborating with the NUKE members to be extremely fun and fascinating because it opens up opportunities to explore various new and captivating ideas. The NUKE members have the ability to execute performances that may be outside our capabilities. For instance, in a recent performance video with SAEJIN, he attempted the iconic Spiderman move where he drops down from the ceiling. All of these visually captivating elements make this comeback even more enjoyable for me.
What quality would you like to have if you were a nuke?
EUGENE: One notable characteristic of NUKE members is their freedom when it comes to changing hairstyles, hair colours, and outfits instantly. It is a characteristic that I want to have if I were a NUKE member.

DAEMON (left), GEON (right)
How do you maintain a sense of unity within the group when you have such a unique combination of members?
DAEMON: As the leader of the group, I can say that our members are very unique and each has great abilities. The main thing is that we are not trying to synchronize perfectly but we are trying to bring out the chemistry and harmony. We respect their own abilities and try to improve as a team and try to express it better. We are not only focused on synchronizing but we are also trying to cooperate and make a good result as a team.
What are the things that make you go, "I'm so proud of myself for doing this!" for this comeback?
SiO: Starting with this comeback, we've had more opportunities to connect with our fans, Players. During my initial encounter with our fans, I was incredibly nervous and somewhat shy, making it challenging for me to engage in meaningful conversations with them. However, throughout this comeback promotional activities, including fan meet-ups and fan sign events, I've made significant progress in interacting with our fans, and I feel like I've become closer to them. In this respect, I'm proud of the improvements I've made in communicating with the Players during this comeback.

SiO
What kind of music does SUPERKIND want to pursue and be known as?
DAEMON: As SUPERKIND, we are trying many different genres of music. We choose genres that suit our concept and the worldviews that we want to show, and I think the main theme and the motto of SUPERKIND's music is diversity. So, I hope SUPERKIND to be known for the diversity and creativity in our musical styles.
As AI artists come into the K-Pop scene, what impact do you think SUPERKIND will have on AI integration within K-Pop groups?
SiO: Our group is the first to use the term "A-Idol," representing an idol group that includes both AI and human members. I believe this is one of SUPERKIND's most distinctive features. Many people still perceive AI technology as something distant and unfamiliar. However, with our group incorporating PRID, the human members, it allows us to demonstrate how we interact with NUKE members, the AI members, and convey our thoughts on this integration, showing how we all unite as a group. This helps the general public become more accustomed to the concept of AI. I hope to see more A-Idols in the future and anticipate the concept evolving over time.

SAEJIN (left), SEUNG (right)
With your unique concept, how do you imagine your concerts around the world to meet your fans?
SiO: We highly value in-person, face-to-face interactions with our fans, and that's why we make an effort to organize concerts and events in as many countries and cities as possible. We're committed to creating music that incorporates different languages to make our music accessible to people from various nations, enabling them to enjoy our songs and find solace and inspiration in our music.
While your AI concept is unique, it's certainly not your only standout quality. What do you think makes SUPERKIND different from other groups, or what do you hope for SUPERKIND to be known and remembered for, aside from having AI members?
SiO: Our commitment to continually challenging ourselves with new music and diverse genres asks for increased communication among the members and greater interaction with our fans, the Players. Each of us possesses unique strengths, and our individual musical preferences may differ, but we aim to be recognized as a group unafraid to explore a diverse musical styles and genres without limitations. Likewise, our future endeavours will remain unrestricted, and our goal is to establish ourselves as artists who boldly explore various musical realms.

Tw transphobia, me being voluntarily infertile, my personal experience of being afab nonbinary, doesn’t apply to everyone, just venting really.
So here I am, off to the kickoff of the new bat researching season, providing a ride to a car-less new colleague. We’re all unique characters here, otherwise you don’t get into bat research. So I’m not surprised one bit when he tells me he used to be a banker and earned a lot of money, but then had an epiphany, stopped caring about money and now lives on a little boat and cooks for the homeless outside of ecology season. Really awesome dude. We talk some more, I’m not religious myself but can really metaphorically find myself in his statements of ‘god is everything, we’re all part of god, and everyone has the same potential in principle, no sense in telling yourself you can’t do something, the thing that limits you most is your own narrative of who you are’. Paraphrasing but he did inspire me.
Convo lands on me tentatively asking him if he thinks there’s ways people can see themselves that lay outside of man or woman. He seems rather open, can’t hurt. Well. Immediately lands on ‘if people see themselves as a dog, doesn’t mean the are a dog’ and ‘grown men are choosing to identify as 16-year-old girls to get into girls’ bathrooms’ and ‘7-year-olds going on puberty blockers is destroying the fabric of society’.
It’s fascinating to me how someone can be so open in so many ways, know most people see THEM as weird, and yet still cling to gender essentialism so hard, doing the exact same thing to so many others. Just... choosing not to listen in turn, you know?
Okay, sure, I know where he stands now, moving on, I won’t be opening up, all fine, used to that. I did get to share with him that I carry a gene giving me 80% risk of breast and ovary cancer, and I chose to have my fallopian tubes removed because it often starts there and there’s no reliable check yet, and I’ve always had a 1000% wish to remain childfree so being sterile is actually a massive plus. He accepts that much. We get to talk of childbirth. He’s been present for a few and was very happy he’s not a woman.
I say ‘I’m just as happy no one can get me pregnant’ but internally I’m just pointing at him going ‘you do get it!!! I’m just as glad I’M not a woman!!’
They are SO close sometimes. It’s so interesting to me.
Anyway. It was good to come home to my partner who’s fully accepting and understanding, and telling him it made me really happy to have him call me Sun irl that one time instead of my birth name, and also have him understand that and have him be willing to make that switch. <3
Also, Wanderer helps me cope. This is a vibe and a half. https://stardustdiiving.tumblr.com/post/737382534907936768/screaming-at-this-you-see-the-vision

What’s your favorite High Fantasy Story?
Oh boy. What a big question. Buckle in; this is going to take a minute.
Okay, so as you might expect, it's very hard for me to say one particular story is my absolute favourite, especially considering how I engage with the genre across many different types of media, so let me talk about a few different stories arranged by medium.
Books
Obviously the works of Tolkien are high on my list of favourites. LOTR is the ur-story of Western high fantasy.
I've mentioned it many times before, but the Starlight & Shadows trilogy by Elaine Cunningham has always been a big favourite of mine and a very formative read for me when I was a preteen. If you like DnD, elves (esp. dark elves), and/or morally complicated female protagonists, this one is for you. It also has a romance between a wizard and a barbarian and incorporates lots of aspects of Forgotten Realms lore that take inspiration from Norse and Slavic mythology.
Film and TV
LOTR defs makes this list again. I am the Spiders Georg for Times Watched LOTR Movies.
The Witcher. "But Svar, why did you list this here and not under books?" Because the books are full of misogyny. Don't get me wrong, the books have good stuff, but the Netflix series got rid of a lot of the misogyny that I greatly dislike about the books (and games). I also just really enjoy the show in its own right. The Blood Origin miniseries spinoff is super good too and I'm sad it got no attention. Are there flaws? Yes. But I really like the story they're trying to tell and Slavic folklore doesn't get nearly enough interest in Western media.
The Mythica Films. This is a series of five indie fantasy films that are clearly inspired by DnD and they are the best indie fantasy movies I've ever seen. They tell the story of a young disabled woman talented with magic who finds out she's got dark powers and has to run for her life. Matt Mercer plays the main villain and weirdly enough, these movies were the first time I ever saw him, and I was actually wary of Critical Role at first because those movies gave me the odd impression that he's an edgelord, even though he's a very sweet person irl lol.
Honor Among Thieves is brand new, but it instantly won my heart as a favourite. How can it not? It's set in DnD's Forgotten Realms and is about platonic friends raising a child together while also being about whacky heist shit. A story after my silly aspec heart.
Games
Okay, I'mma have to restrain myself and give you top five here, because otherwise we're gonna be here all day.
The Baldur's Gate Saga. Fucking old but truly great. The OG. The 90's graphics might turn a lot of people off these days, which is unfortunate, because they are amazing games, especially with the Enhanced Editions and the new Siege of Dragonspear expansions. It's the story of an unwitting child of the God of Murder, and you can either embrace what you are, struggle against it, or try to ride the line. I personally find the struggle against one's blood and supernatural urges a much more compelling story. It's the struggle to become something other than what you were made to be while also being pulled towards your destiny and have to choose what to do with the power that is given to you. It is the struggle for your soul and the souls of those you love. It is a journey to the Hells and a rise from its ashes, and you have to choose what the phoenix looks like. Also there's a man who carries a miniature giant space hamster everywhere with him and a gnome obsessed with turnips, to name just a few of the incredibly silly aspects of the story.
The Elder Scrolls series. The worldbuilding in TES is amazing for the specific reason that it's such a fucking mess. The folks at Bethesda and Zenimax have taken the unique approach of building the lore like historians collecting a bunch of conflicting primary sources. That's fucking fascinating because it makes the world feel more realistic. The real world is full of conflicting information, especially regarding history, and we all have to decide what we think is true based on the information given to us. Also TES III: Morrowind in particular is the most game of all time. You can tell it was made by a bunch of freaks and it's creatively braver than many of the major RPGs that have come out since. Bethesda just went "what if we did a game about the land of the dark elves, and that land is full of mushroom trees and all the fauna is either some sort of unique reptile, insect, or jellyfish- no it's not underground- anyway, here's an epic story about destiny, revenge, cultural conflict, and the gods being deeply flawed- also there's a bit where you have to kill a giant jellyfish with a fork you got from a lizard man called Big Head".
The Dragon Age series. All things considered, DA is a pretty conventional high dark fantasy story, but it has enough of its own unique twists and interesting writing/worldbuilding to be special to me. Each game has a different protagonist and a different type of story, but there's some themes that are consistent across the series. I would say the central theme of DA is finding the strength to do what must be done, even though you never asked for the responsibility and by rights shouldn't even be here. I think that's really compelling if you're the kind of person who has dealt with a lot of imposter syndrome in your life.
The Pillars of Eternity games. I don't think PoE gets nearly enough love. It has rich, carefully crafted lore that gets into things that other series tend to half-ass, like the linguistic aspects of the worldbuilding. Across the two games, Obsidian really delves deep into difficult discussions about mental illness, the relationship between gods and mortals, the cycle of life and death, ethics in magic, the effects of imperialism, and trying to make huge decisions when the right answer isn't clear. Also the visual style of these games is impeccable, as is the music.
Neverwinter Nights. This is where my love of DnD began. I watched my uncle play this game when I was a kid and I instantly fell in love with its whole vibe. The main campaign might hit different these days, because the story involves a deadly plague and the protag has to recover the pieces of a potential cure while also uncovering cult shit. There's a whole betrayal/scapegoat thing going on that's super tragic. Anyway, pile this one on the list of reasons I grew up to be a DnD obsessed goth.
Other
If you follow me, you're probably familiar with how much I love the DnD actual play show Critical Role. I've been watching since 2016 and I'm forever amazed at the compelling stories the cast and the dice rolls have built across three campaigns now.
Black Dice Society is my other favourite DnD actual play show. It's Ravenloft, so it's a gothic horror/high fantasy fushion. It has two seasons and tells such a beautiful story about the struggle for love and power.
#ask#sorry this took me so long to answer it's been a busy ass week#and I had to think about it a bunch

dcst magi au concepts/rambling
i got carried away thinking of how this could work, so here's little blurbs about specific characters and how they fit in. magi is very dear to me, being one of my favorite manga series of all time, and the philosophical questioning of what it means to be a king and rule a nation is such a unique concept that i've never seen it in any other media the way shinobu ohtaka presents it. that being said, it's been a bit since i've read the series in length, so i might not be fully grasping or i may misremember certain parts. if anyone has any input i'd love to hear it!!
under a cut bc it is looooong (also spoiler characters for anime-onlys)
sai (nanami, formerly)
background is that sai is taken in as an orphan by an international trading company that makes voyages all over. ryusui is also taken in at the same time, so the two grow up in the company together as the only young children, but that's the extent of it (no blood relation, in other words). at some point ryusui takes over the company and he and sai have a falling out that resorts to sai leaving. sai had previously erected dungeons for the company and accompanied them through some of them himself, but the only one who was chosen by a djinn and acquired a metal vessel was ryusui. nonetheless, when he leaves the company, he goes no-contact with everyone involved, essentially severing his connection with his one king's candidate. sai becomes a magi that is largely secluded, and is looked upon from the world at large as a sort of sage or guru that you have to go on a rigorous journey to meet. he accepts everyone who visits him in isolation, and if he's intrigued, will aid in any requests those that make the long journey to visit him have for him. he even has a few king's candidates from those that sought him out in hopes of him raising a dungeon for them, which sai does without question. it's only the ones he likes and sees potential in that he chooses to accompany into the dungeon, so in this sense, he has several king's candidates scattered throughout the world that he monitors from seclusion.
mirai shishio
mirai was first born as an ordinary person to the shishio family, but died young. when she returns to the flow of the rukh, it is with great awe that she finds herself returning to the world of the living with memories of her previous life intact. she reunites with her brother tsukasa when he's made a name for himself as a great warrior, and after they conquer a pair of dungeons together at different points in their lives, he becomes her single king's candidate. mirai is devoted to the ideal nation that tsukasa wishes to see born into the world, and because of her devotion, she can become blinded by her brother's more ruthless actions. she is seen as a magi with a childlike wonder and disposition even as she grows into an adult.
ruri
ruri is originally a magi that has devoted herself not to a person but to a place. she has lived longer than most, being reborn over and over, continuing on the legacy of the nation she helped found several generations in the past. the country is not particularly noteworthy, not in military strength or political power or territory size, but there is a humbleness in something standing strong and far outlasting its neighbors whose borders and power structures are constantly changing. ruri, upon completion of a series of trials, will call forth a dungeon for the nation's chosen subjects to attempt to traverse, but she has never accompanied anyone, as far as the legends go. the nation boasts dungeon conquerors that wield metal vessels, but none of them are a magi's chosen king's candidate. that is, until senku ishigami, whose strength of character ruri finds herself fascinated by. senku's certain breed of intellect, pragmatism, and adherence to a strict set of morals entices ruri, who urges him to complete the trials necessary to enter a dungeon despite him not being a citizen of the country. when he passes with flying colors not with raw strength or speed but by strategy and intelligence, ruri sees fit to guide senku through her raised dungeon herself, offering her assistance to him and his companions when they need help and leaving them be to solve problems on their own when they have the ability to do so. when senku wins over the dungeon's djinn, he leaves as ruri's sole king's candidate and establishes steadfast ties with the nation and its people.
stanley snyder
stanley is the leader of a seafaring group that wanders the world offering their skillset to notable influential people. anyone that can pay the hefty price can make use of their services. at one point, stanley seeks out the magi sai and becomes his king's candidate. sai is intrigued that stanley approaches him having already conquered one of the free-standing dungeons sai erected a while back that those before had failed to traverse. at his behest, sai brings forth a new dungeon for stanley and his compatriots to conquer, and stanley leads a new legacy in being the wielder of two metal vessels. the third time he approaches sai, it's with the intention of the magi accompanying him, this time alone, through yet another dungeon. sai agrees with the caveat that this be the last dungeon stanley be allowed to step into, and at the end of such a task is when stanley officially moves from a wandering dungeon conqueror to a proper king's candidate of considerable strength. stanley's group boasts a good handful of household members (maya, brody, charlotte) and even a magician (luna) and their legacy precedes them worldwide. at the height of the group's notoriety, they're invited to the magician's country by the country's chancellor himself. unable to reject such a request, stanley enters with his sole magician and finds himself accepting a job from chancellor xeno wingfield, who wishes to study the infamous stanley snyder's trio of metal vessels and the various states of their assimilation on his body. while conducting the research as it's central test subject, stanley finds himself residing in the country for a considerable length of time.
hyoga akatsuki
the heir-apparent to a country of knights that adhere to a strict doctrine and are notably wary of outsiders. the country's combat techniques are a well-guarded secret, and so is the fact that hyoga himself is one of the magi sai's king's candidates. hyoga has a very pragmatic view of the world that sai appreciates, especially because it's so different from any of his other king's candidates. although sai is far from being the country's magi, he and hyoga keep on good terms, and it's not exceedingly rare (but still rare, as far as these things go) to find sai within the country's walls without an official invitation.
ryusui nanami
ryusui grows up in the company of a large trade organization and spends his early years on the open sea learning the tools of the trade. he eventually takes over the company and expands its influence until it becomes impossible for someone not to have heard of the nanami group. ryusui is a dungeon conqueror with a metal vessel, but he is not sponsored by a magi. he and sai had a falling out over differing views of the world and the way things should be run, and at the end of such, sai renounces the nanami name and flees. at the height of the nanami group's popularity, ryusui docks in a capital city that boasts one of the magi sai's unconquered dungeons. he hires two notable warriors, moz and kirisame, to accompany him into the dungeon, but while they manage to navigate it to completion, ryusui is unable to convince the djinn to choose him, so they leave empty-handed. as he intended to pay the two with the dungeon's riches, ryusui instead rewards them for the job by making them members of his household, improving their strength in battle tenfold with mastery of their household vessels. the two decide to leave the city and travel with the trading company.
kohaku
a notable military power in the magi ruri's chosen homeland. kohaku has a metal vessel of considerable value and uses its power largely to enrich the country and its people. she is the first to recognize the nomad senku's value and finds him peculiar enough to follow around and learn from. when senku completes the nation's preset trials to enter one of ruri's dungeon, kohaku acknowledges along with her sister what traits senku has that would make a good ruler, and requests to accompany senku and co in the dungeon to observe. at the end of such, kohaku determines that although senku would be a different kind of king compared to her, that there is value in that different approach. this simultaneous acknowledgement of the difference in ideals later allows kohaku to become a member of senku's household and be granted a household vessel after being recognized by senku's djinn while still attaining her own metal vessel. the powers of the two vessels differ wildly, so the situations in which kohaku relies on one or the other are very specific and never manage to overlap. she gains both international acclaim and scorn in equal measure for her decision to retain both household and metal vessels.
tsukasa shishio
a two-time dungeon conqueror of a country that boasts considerable military might. earlier in his life, he led an insurrection of his homeland and worked as a member of a chosen council to reestablish order and peace within said country. after his sister returns as a magi, tsukasa leaves with her to travel to a nation that will be better grounds for her magic training, as their own country knows nothing of magicians. recalling their rough childhood, tsukasa admits to mirai that he seeks to form a nation of his own from the ground up, and mirai vows to stand by him as his magi. the nation they create is idealized by its citizens but feared by those that share its borders. at mirai's insistence, their nation also boasts a particularly impressive environment for magicians, so much so that mirai's former teacher, shamil volkov, settles in the nation and becomes its first magic scholar, establishing sprawling institutions for magicians to train and study from for free, as long as they give back to the country in some way for the exchange of knowledge.
senku ishigami
a nomad with a particular knack for trouble and bad luck in equal measure. senku hails from the ashes of a ruined kingdom and carries the weight of responsibility to atone for the failures of said kingdom. he's always accompanied by two childhood friends who hail from the same former nation, taiju and yuzuriha. while taiju later becomes an impressive member of senku's household, yuzuriha is a born magician who more often than not ends up holding their ragtag group together when they threaten to split. it's a guarded secret that yuzuriha is their trump card when it comes to conflict resolution, since her battle-oriented magic spells are wild and unruly but undoubtedly the most powerful tool in their arsenal. while his companions both boast strength in equal measure, senku's strength comes from his mind - something that the magi ruri takes into account when senku is in her presence. senku never intended to stay in ruri's country nor become her king's candidate, but he can't deny that he feels a sense of duty to protect this country, as if such a thing will atone for not being able to save his homeland. the power of senku's djinn is not suited for direct combat, so the properties of his metal vessel are a little unorthodox. because of this, he ends up seeking the help of stanley snyder for mastery of his djinn's powers.
xeno wingfield
the chancellor of the world's most renowned magic institution, and by extension, the ruler of the world's only country of magicians. xeno is a magician obsessed with the theoretical, and because of this, his research tends to err on the side of unorthodox. he got into his position of power only to have no restrictions imposed on his research, and usually ends up delegating most of his daily tasks to other qualified individuals. in particular, connie lee is an esteemed magician that often shares the brunt of the burden of official chancellor duties, although she doesn't dare to complain to xeno directly. under xeno's reign, the country is quite prejudiced, only allowing the entry of magicians into its borders with the sole exception being xeno's personally invited guests. xeno never invites people to visit that he cannot personally kill with his own skill and merit alone, but when stanley snyder arrives, he questions if he's actually capable of bringing the man down, observing that even underhanded and unethical tactics are unlikely to ensure his victory. it keeps him cautious, which is why he allows stanley's average magician to reside within the country while stanley complies with his research, figuring he could use the girl as a hostage if need be. while xeno is rather intellectually curious about stanley, he is only fond of one person in the entire world: his suika, born-genius magic prodigy and the young girl he's grooming to be his successor when it's time to retire as chancellor (and perhaps travel the world by ship with a certain mercenary-for-hire).
