Tony’s Childhood. Part 1: Identifying facts

In the MCU, Tony sometimes acts like a kid. There is a reason behind every behavior, so I wondered what it was like for him when he was a real kid.

So, the questions of the day: what do we know about Tony's childhood? Did he have one? And, most importantly, how did it affect him?

Let’s first list what we know from the movies:

At age 4 Tony built his first circuit board (IM1)

At age 6 built his first engine (IM1)

Was sent to a boarding school by Howard (IM2)

Cracked the Pentagon’s firewall in high school on a dare (AoU)

Had a nanny until the age of 14 (IM3)

Went to college at 14 (IM1)

Built Dum-E and U when he was there (IM1)

At 17 graduated summa cum laude from MIT (IM1)

Continued his education until his parents’ death (CW)

Tony’s genius gave him two things: the brain and the pain. And by the pain, I mean that instead of interacting and bonding with his parents, enjoying life, playing, having fun, making friends, taking care of pets, and all the other things children do to gradually prepare for adulthood and grow up "healthy", he got this list of achievements. That doesn’t make a person normal.

Parents

We know his relationship with Howard was complicated. Howard loved him in his own way. He had too many things to do to be a good father: SI, S.H.I.E.L.D., scientific projects, trying to build a better future with clean energy, etc. All good, except when you want your child to love you back. Especially if in the tiny amount of time you spend with him, you don’t show him any signs of affection.

What do we know about Maria? Her name, what she looked like, that she played the piano, and died at Winter Soldier’s hand on Dec 16, 1991. That’s it. She didn’t spend much time with Tony either. Remember, he even had a nanny, instead of a mother. Tony's words about her showed that he loved her, but he didn't talk much about her. Because she wasn’t present in his life enough. Why? Because…

School

Howard sent Tony to a boarding school.

Here’s in the S.H.I.E.L.D.s file we have this information about the school:

“Phillips Academy, Andover, MA 1977-1984”

This means he was there from age 7 to 14. Howard sent him to a boarding school when he was SEVEN.

Phillips Academy Andover serves grades 9-12 only (it is a college preparatory school). Thus, either this is a mistake by the creators of the film/file, or Tony, due to his genius, became an exception. Since the early age he was already at school was also mentioned in IM2 tie-in comics, and in Earth-616 that was also 7, we can mark 1977-1984 as valid.

Think about it again: Tony was sent to boarding school in another state when he was 7 years old. He spent another 7 years there, alone, among high school-aged teenagers. No parents around, no peers.

For example, even Hogwarts accepts 11-year-old children, and they live with their peers. Now imagine Harry Potter, at the age of 7, is thrown into a dorm with 7th-year students and locked there. Doesn’t make a person normal either, does it?

Nannies and Jarvis

Since Tony was at the boarding school, there are two options for how he could have a nanny (mentioned in IM3) and spend time with Edwin Jarvis:

1) He was at the boarding school with a nanny. There is almost no possibility that the nanny was Edwin Jarvis because Jarvis was Howard’s butler and had other responsibilities.

2) He had a nanny at home in the summer and during short school breaks. In this case, his parents couldn’t even give him this little of their precious time.

In any case, he could only see Jarvis at home, a few months a year at most.

Note: There is a date error in IM3, stating Tony was 14 in 1983. This is clearly an error and we can omit this detail.

Bullying

Remember this dialog between Tony and Harley in IM3?

0:45:15 – Harley asks him how he knew he was being bullied at school. Tony doesn't answer. He gives him a non-lethal flash thing to "discourage bullying."

We see that Tony knew exactly what was going on with Harley at school. Because that’s exactly what happened to him there. Harley reminded him of himself. Brilliant kid with no friends and practically no parents. He was bullied by 9th-12th graders.

If he had a nanny with him at the school, that probably made things even worse. He would be bullied because he has a nanny, and despite he has one to look after him.

Ulfric slowly loses Eryn's respect over time but one incident really cements it.

During the war, there's imperial assassins who come after Eryn. To keep his best asset beloved soldier safe, Ulfric orders her to stay in Windhelm for a bit.

Literally everyone protests this, but Ulfric DOES outrank all of them, so... guess she's to stay put. Eryn HAAAATES this.

Well, while she's in the city, there's yet another murder. And this time, it's one of Eryn's friends, Susanna. The guards tell her to stay back, don't get involved, they're busy enough, and they sarcastically tell her if SHE can solve it she's welcome to.

Eryn goes to Jorleif, who admits that the guards all prioritize the war and don't listen to him. And of course she's upset that no one seems to care about this, and she desperately needs something to do.

Eryn goes through the normal questline, following her hunches and instincts. She notices instantly that it's like some sort of ritualistic killing, based on where the killings are. When she investigates Hjerm, she finds the murder scene (and the amulet).

She brings the info to Jorleif as she goes, who is genuinely grateful for her help. He didn't not care, but he couldn't get the guards to care. He recommends she ask Calixto, since he seems to love weird bullshit.

Calixto instantly sets off Eryn's alarm bells. Something about him just strikes her weird. Especially since he keeps trying to insist that she sells him that necklace. Which she doesn't do, because it's part of an active investigation. And he's being WEIRD.

But she does listen to him that Wuunferth is knowledgeable about things like necromancy. So she goes to talk to Wuunferth.

He, of course, informs her that no he doesn't do necromancy, he has the nickname "The Unliving" bc he's stupid old. But Eryn explains that she wasn't accusing him, she doesn't care about what college he went to, and she just wants information.

Wuunferth softens, and they compare notes. He's also quite surprised when she uses magic as a way to visually illustrate her points. She always forgets that people don't seem to think magic and swords can coexist.

So, they realize the pattern, the way these murders are happening, and where the murderer is going to strike next. They agree to set a trap. Eryn would make great bait, but everyone knows who she is and that she's dangerous.

So, the night of the next murder, she stays hidden with some illusion magic from Wuunferth... And a man jumps out at Arivanya. Eryn saves her and knocks down the murderer. It's revealed to be Calixto, of course. But when he tries to jump at Eryn after feigning a surrender, she just fireballs him in the face.

The city thanks her, sincerely. She's avenged the murdered women, and managed to solve a serial killer case.

Wuunferth, especially, thanks her. He didn't know people suspected him, and he's glad Eryn had the sense to come talk to him before accusing him.

As a thank you, he enchants her rapier for her, free of charge. He gives it enchantments he thinks fit her: Fire damage, like her favorite spells, and a health absorbing property, so she'll always have a chance as long as she can swing a sword.

She thanks him and picks up her sword, which she names Redwing after its new red glow. But it's all bothering her. Something about this just felt off.

She looks to where Ulfric is sitting, and makes a face. She doesn't get why she feels so... angry, almost. Angry at him.

Wuunferth says that happens to everyone around Ulfric, eventually. He says things that people believe in, he fights a cause worth fighting, so people like him at first. But sooner or later, everyone gets tired of him.

Eryn realizes it's because he didn't care about his city, or the fact that people were dying. He didn't care. At all. Jorleif tells her that's just normal for Windhelm, hence why he was trying to put the investigation together.

Eryn still doesn't seem to quite get it. She feels upset with herself for being upset. That's the man she's fighting a war for, right? So why does she suddenly dislike him so much?

Wuunferth and Jorleif gently explain it to her.

Ulfric is selfish and short sighted.

Eryn is not.

That's why she doesn't like him.

- slamming on the doors with his entire body weight. does NOT realize the doors will open to an elevator shaft and not a safe floor

- if he's in there too long he'll wear himself out and sit on the floor and pout for a while. sad sad puppy dog man

- if you're freaking out he'll just yell in your face which will not help but he is yelling reassuring things. he just has zero volume control.

- definitely just saying what the hell over and over again. not yelling just muttering to themself and being mostly unintelligible

A good fit for Heartslabyul's strict environment would be Sebek!

He is a boy with a very strong code of conduct that he follows religiously. Sebek is very strict with himself and follows his personal rules and daily routine with no exception. He puts a lot of value in the importance of rules and authority figures to maintain peace and order, since it's the only thing he knows: as a hopefully royal guard to be, Sebek believes in his liege first and in himself second. And, as a guard, he is very protective.

Sebek believes his way of thinking is the correct one and has no shame in trying to instill his views on others. He considers that he is doing what's right for his liege and the world, and no one can convince him otherwise. He'd make a good card soldier, maybe a spade suit or a heart suit.

Deuce would make a good candidate for Savanaclaw.

He has an ironclad willpower and determination in spades (pun intended), which are his main driving forces in life. He is determined to become a honor student and to right all the wrongs he's ever done, a resolution he clings to harder and harder with every day.

Deuce is gutsy, and when push comes to shoves he is ready to fight back. He has a strong sense of loyalty, and he is willing to do anything for the ones he considers part of his "gang". He is a dedicated friend and family member and believes in payback, especially when he has been wronged in some way.

Another good candidate for the Savanaclaw student spot is Epel!

His initial wish to be sorted in Savanaclaw was not random. Epel has the (in)famous Savanaclaw willpower and determination. Epel knows what he wants -he wants to be a strong mage who can help Harveston thrive- and his pride for his community is unwavering. He knows how hard he needs to fight and he is willing to work himself to the bone when needed.

Epel also is somewhat of an idealist, and he has big dreams for himself. From being a great mage to someone his whole hometown will be proud of, Epel strives to be this amazing, reliable figure worth of respect and who doesn't deserve belittling. He won't back down from any fight, even if he has to throw the first punch, and he gets back up even after losing.

Ace would fit well in Scarabia.

He is a clever and cunning boy, who knows when to be straightfoward and when to be sneaky. From facing his own housewarden to pretending to ask Leona a smart question in order to not be used a bait, Ace is intelligent and can read situations very well, skills he uses to his advantage. He is also not above playing roles and feigning innocence if the end goal appeals to him.

Ace is resourceful, playful and knows what to say in a moment of need, making him very adaptable to any situation. Despite still getting into trouble, he insists it is part of his calculated risk. He is good at math, but sometimes you gotta make sacrifices (re: get put on cleaning duty) for a good outcome (re: a nap at the back of the class).

Pomefiore is a dorm whose values Jack would resonate with.

Jack is a boy who strives to improve himself in every area he can. Academics, sports, even with his hobbies, he always strives to become smarter, faster, wiser, better. Self improvement is his main driving force, and he loves knowing that he is improving, since he knows very well just how hard he is working to achieve his best self.

Generally speaking, Jack is very self aware and knows what his skills and strong points are. He is self assured, meticulous and last but not least, aware of his potential, which he cultivates every day without fail.

Another good pick for Pomefiore would be Ortho!

Ortho is, above all else, very proud of his own skills and achievements. He is the only humanoid with the ability to learn and feel, that's quite an achievement! Yet he is not satisfied, as he knows technology (him included) will always have space for improvement. From making and maintaining his gears to joining clubs to extend his knowledge on human reactions, Ortho wants to become even better, and he is an unstoppable force.

Being a Shroud, Ortho comes with his own eccenticities, like calling everyone by their full names and considering using powerful lasers as a solution for most of his problems. Maybe it's because he's an android, but Ortho can get quite reckless and engage in risky behavior.

Iron Man (2008)

As mentioned in last post, when I went to Iron Man I literally had no idea that such a superhero existed. (I thought Sherlock Holmes with RDJ came out first but apparently not so I had essentially no knowledge of the actor either.) My friends and I decided to spend the day out at the nearest town big enough to have a book store, craft stores, and a Target, as well as a Drive-In movie theater. I was now a college student and enjoying the freedom of no curfew, rebel that I was. I'm pretty sure the movie prior to Iron Man was the Narnia: Prince Caspian movie. I mention this because I hated that movie. It bastardized the book something awful and after the first movie was so faithful an adaptation, this was incredibly disappointing. However, this meant I was doubly primed to appreciate the awesomeness that Iron Man ended up being. I've watched it a few times since then, but usually as background to something else. I decided for this challenge I did REALLY want to watch the movies/shows. No other distractions- just it. I can take breaks (it took me 3 days to finish Iron Man due to various constraints last week) but when I'm watching, I'm JUST watching.

Here were my takeaways this time

The differences in Terrence Howard's Rhodey and Cheadle's Rhodey are always a bit mind boggling and part of what makes Iron Man feel really different from the later films. We're also just starting MCU so while they aren't LACKING budget, it's not the level it would be later. This doesn't hurt the movie at all for the record, if anything I think it meant the story had to be more well-developed and the actors better.

But this first film has a seriousness and a somberness that most of the other films only flirt with (notable exception being Infinity War of course).

The scene where Tony goes back to help Gulmira, Yinsen's home, and we see the 13 year old boy screaming and crying as his father is pried away from their family, the soldiers clearly planning to execute him and all the other grown men. The young boy tears himself away from his mother to his father, determined to keep him, to save him. His father, begging his son to go, so that he will live even though he knows- he KNOWS he will not. This moment of utter terror made personal just before Tony shows up is incredible and all the more so when put into historical context. The U.S. was still in Afghanistan and Iraq at this time and it was easy for citizens here to paint everyone in those areas with the same brush. But in this moment you CAN'T. You HAVE to see the family ripped apart right alongside the terrorists and be forced to realize that race, ethnicity, language don't make terrible people- actions do.

A common criticism of Marvel movies is they don't let a moment sit- that they always break a serious moment with a joke. But this one doesn't do that. There are multiple heavy moments- after Yinsen's death for one and when Pepper nearly quits (because she can't watch Tony self-sabotage and possibly die) and he tells her:

"I shouldn't be alive... unless it was for a reason. I'm not crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it's right."

This moment sits between them so clearly, so starkly and it is not ended with a joke, but with Pepper grabbing the flashdrive and asking what to do. (Thinking back, I'm wondering how many of those MCU "broken" moments are by Tony. He's the one uncomfortable with emotion. Him breaking those moments with humor is actually 100% in character. Something to pay attention to as I watch.)

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, some of the key themes of this movie just strike to the heart.

Death from a distance is easy to ignore or even be complicit in, but death up close rips us apart. Tony sold weapons that he knew took lives for years but it wasn't until he watched Yinsen die that I think he really understands what that means. Yes, his parents had died before but he wasn't THERE, he didn't SEE it. This death, this is the one that makes him really know what it means.

You don't have to change everything to be a better person. Tony is still self-centered. He still likes attention. He's still arrogant and as we will see next movie, open to playing the field as Pepper and him haven't committed. But not only has he stopped being complicit in the deaths of the innocent, he's taken on the mantle of protecting them.

Lastly, who the good guys are is largely a matter of perspective. This obviously gets hit harder again in Ultron (oh that glorious train wreck- I'm looking forward to writing about you), but it matters here. Tony was fine manufacturing weapons because he assumed he was supporting the "good guys", the 'Muricans. But not only was Obadiah dirty dealing, he is forced to learn the good guys aren't always as discriminatory with their weapon use as they purport to be. That it's easy to start painting with broad brushstrokes in areas where precision is actually called for.

Overall I'm really glad I PAID attention to this one this round. The grittiness and the depth really hit the way they did the first time or even more so. Onward to The Incredible Hulk, even though it's only semi-canon now.

My finals went overall quite well! (Except for one final but my overall grade was still fine so we're all good) I did end up having my ceiling of my room collapse though! (⁠ノ⁠｀⁠Д⁠´⁠)⁠ノ⁠彡⁠┻⁠━⁠┻ Gotta love landlords that refuse to do proper house maintenance on century old homes. So right before finals had my ceilings collapse, then had finals while stuck sleeping in the living room (to be fair the couch was comfy but the whole setup is less than ideal), and then literally the evening after my last final flew out to literal other side of the planet for college visits. So needless to say I've been rather tired recently! It's been fun though and I also got to see some family that I rarely see again so that was nice. BUT! I finally have the mental bandwidth to send in an ask again. So enough with the dramatic rambling about my life I have more ideas about the human hero reader I thought of!

So! I learned just the other day that an army captain is actually kinda low rank. (At least in the US military, can't speak to other systems) And you usually get there within like 4 years of your career as an officer. And if Wars is around 24-26ish (at least that's how old I usually imagine him since he's one of the older members of the group but not like OLD) and he would have started his time in the military as like a 17-18 year old, buddy boy would actually be behind on his career. (Stick with me this will all come together I swear!)

So I imagine human hero reader (I'm calling them hh!reader for my sanity to specify from here on out for my sanity) ended up getting pulled into the military after saving Hyrule. They really don't like being there, but the royal family of that time doesn't really give reader a choice. I'd imagine them most likely being a very low rank enlisted soldier. (If you require explanations for anything just let me know. I am more than happy to explain and understand most people haven't been raised around this stuff) But because reader didn't want to join the military in the first place and Warriors is one of the MOST wary member of the chain they would probably butt heads quite a bit. I imagine reader with an attitude of while they're usually a very nice person to be around they can hold a strong grudge and aren't afraid to tell someone if they're being an idiot. Not something that goes over well in the military. So reader probably targets at least some of that frustration to the resident military man. And something that would be rather easy to go for is that fact that he still hasn't been promoted. This would probably devolve into him telling them that they suck as a soldier until reader snaps and said they never had any choice in the matter and they storm off. Probably one of the their merry little band would go after reader. I think Sky might be best since he's a knight himself so he'd have a better idea what they were going through. Wind would also be an interesting option especially if it's after the whole "We're the same since we both made the active decision to save Hyrule!" moment. Both are good chances at bonding. Oh yeah I guess it's relevant that I see reader at an older teen age, like 16-17. Yay sibling dynamics (I say this like my only younger sibling doesn't drive me up a wall). I'll prolly add more later but I am tired. And I have a relatively early morning tomorrow.

It reminded me of that one post for Marvel where Tony got excited because Rhodey, being Colonel, outranked Steve and could tell him what to do.

I'd imagine if Warrior pulled out the whole "you suck as a soldier" Wild would have to push back a bit because if they suck, what does that make him? He died! Hello? At least Reader had something going for them. They still won in the end with minimal loses on their side.

Hi my love! I ship you with: Soldier Boy!!!! He loves that you can hold a grudge despite being so sweet. There's something feisty and defiant in that act and it definitely caught his attention. He's definitely not expecting it and loves making jokes at their expense, especially if it's against Hughie who he swears is making up all types of things like Wifi and Bluetooth. He also loves your humor. Everyone else whose part of The Boys takes things waaay too seriously. They can't laugh or joke around, they definitely don't find him funny, but you do. He likes that. It's like he's putting on a one man show. There's never a dull moment with him. Your relationship is protective. Ben would do anything to protect you. As soon as he realizes he's caught feelings for you, it's over. He doesn't let you out of his sight and he definitely makes sure Homelander doesn't get anywhere near you. He hates when you bicker with Butcher, when you argue with anyone, immediately coming to your defense. He's an old fashioned guy: he likes seeing you in his clothes, especially in his sweatshirts. He allows a cat in his presence, but he draws the line at rats. For now. He adores your cat even though he was grumpy and adamant that you wouldn't have a pet for a few more years. Underneath the sexual jokes and all the drugs he smokes, he's actually a pretty okay boyfriend. Your first date isn't actually a date, more like you've been placed on babysitting duty while the rest of The Boys figure out what to do with him. You guys eat snacks and watch TV and talk. Ben doesn't admit that he likes you, but he gets pretty cozy pretty fast, so you sort of assume what this means. When Hughie calls and says your shift is over, you tell him you can stay a little longer, you don't mind. Hearing this brings a smile to Soldier Boys face. You two hang out and talk and get to know one another much better. Everyone assumes you must've suffered sitting there with him, but you had a great time. Relationship Headcanon: You introduce Ben to a lot of modern music. He definitely has strong opinions about each song, but he listens the whole way through before ranting about how much he hates it, how silly modern music, how you can barely understand what the singer is saying, etc. It's all the same stuff you've heard from old people about modern genres. Still, there are a few he likes and he's grateful you showed them to him.

okay. tommy posting! a masterpost of introductory hcs for my portrayal. i might expand on specific points in different posts because i have a lot of thoughts and feelings.

first and foremost: tommy is closer to 50 than 40. lou is 39 but it doesn't make sense with the canon they've provided in s7 for tommy to be the same age, because if he was, that'd mean he was ~19 in '05 during chim begins and that's just not possible with him also having served (he's clearly not a probie and it seems like he's been at the 118 for years at that point). i'm putting him at maybe 45 or 46.

i do take a lot of inspiration from what lou has had to say about him. he's an only child of shitty parents who didn't really want to be parents, and that had a profound impact on him.

his dad was a miserable man and mediocre cop who felt bad about being mediocre and took it out on his wife and son.

tommy actually did fairly well in school, hoping it'd help assist in his plan of Getting Out, but things really didn't go his way on the college front and he felt trapped, which is what led him to enlisting.

and for the most part, he operated fairly well in the military. it was good to have order. and he was already accustomed to being treated terribly - but it was a little different because at least it wasn't his dad. he did his job and kept to himself, at least for a while, until he started a 'relationship' with another soldier. it was toxic and pretty terrible, overshadowed by DADT, and it ended pretty brutally. tommy had already become pretty disillusioned to the army by the point it ended, but it was another major factor in him getting out the first chance he got.

when he was discharged, he didn't even bother going home. he went to LA, choosing it as his new city because it felt very safe due to its size. it felt like a place that'd be easy to disappear and be just another guy.

he didn't immediately jump to a career with the LAFD. he had a few months of trying to figure his shit out, contemplating if he should finally try to go to college - but it was scary to think about so he ended up dropping the idea. he went through some basic jobs before applying to LAPD impulsively. army to police felt like a natural transition, and he thought maybe it would be a way to actually 'serve' his country, because being overseas doing shitty things for people who wouldn't give him good reasons hardly felt like 'service.' and he did make it through training, got a beat - but he realized pretty quickly that being a cop also wasn't for him. he stuck with it for a few months, though, because he was terrified of feeling lost and at least it was something and he did get to help people, sometimes. because he realized he did like helping people - and when, on one shift, he assisted some firefighters in helping rescue some kids from a wrecked car, and suddenly, a lot of things clicked for him. he turned in his badge and applied to the fire department a week later.

being in the army and then a cop means he wasn't surprised by the culture at the 118. he knew how to blend in well by that point. he knew what part to play to survive. and he does feel really bad about it. he worked hard to make peace with hen and chimney, and they're two people who are incredibly important to him - hen, because she was formative in helping him understand that he can be himself, and chimney because of course he wouldn't be alive without him.

(i also want to point out that i believe he briefly had a crush on chimney. but with all of the repression going on he refused to really recognize it. it did slightly contribute to him not wanting to be around chimney at first, though.)

tommy first acknowledged to himself that he was gay just before he put in for a transfer. of course he understood he was attracted to men long before that point; he'd had secret flings - not just the one in the military - but he'd still tried to be with women. he wanted to believe he was bisexual for a long time and that he could just 'suppress one side of it', but it didn't work. when he accepted he was gay, he put in for a transfer because he felt it'd be easier to start over at a new house. it was a very tough decision, because hen and howie had become family, and he had started to form a relationship with bobby... but he knew this was what he needed to be himself. he didn't have some big announcement about his identity like hen did when he transferred, but he didn't make efforts to hide it, either.

buck is the first firefighter he's dated, though. his prior relationships post-coming out were all with civilians - a few of which, yes, originated from meeting on calls. after the third time, though, he really felt it was a bad idea to continue that pattern. for him, personally, it felt like almost like a power imbalance, and he hated constantly wondering if the guys he was seeing just felt indebted.

he kept up with the 118 even after leaving - mostly because it's hard not to, with how often they make the news, but also because he genuinely does care about a lot of the people there. he reached out to chim after the car accident and the stabbing, and to hen after her accident.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 10

It's a shitty episode, that's what this is.

Why does this episode suck? Well, we start off with Kaji taking Asuka shopping for bathing suits. She's going on a school trip to Okinawa, you see. She asks him if he went on any school trips when he was her age, and he says he couldn't because Second Impact was happening back then. Anyway, Kaji sucks and I hate him.

As it turns out, she can't even go on the stupid trip, because NERV wants the Eva pilots on standby in case of an Angel attack. You'd think this would be a standing order year-round, but Asuka is gobsmacked to find out she's not allowed to just do whatever she wants, whenever she wants. You're in the army now, kid.

Here's the thing about Asuka. I was kind of looking forward to her introduction into the story, because Rei and Shinji were practically comatose throughout the early episodes of this show. At least she would bring some energy to this thing, I thought. And she does, but mostly it's a whiny, bratty, irrational energy that gets old pretty quickly. When Misato tells Asuka she can't go on the trip, Asuka demands to know who gave the order. Well, Misato did, dummy. She's your commanding officer. When she can't argue with that, she argues with Shinji, expecting him to say something to resolve this, like he has any control over the situation. But Shinji kind of expected this to happen, so he never got excited about the trip in the first place.

This is the origin of that "so you've given up?" meme. I always took it at face value. That is, I assumed the scene was Asuka asking Shinji if he was quitting something hard, and he just casually admits that he's collapsing in the face of adversity. But the actual context is that Asuka is trying to cajole Shinji into the impossible task of getting them a furlough from their indispensable child soldier jobs. When that doesn't work, he insults his manhood, then asks Misato why they don't just find the Angels and destroy them first, so they're not always on stand-by to defend against an attack. Misato's like, kid, if we knew how to do that, don't you think we'd have already done it?

Misato points out that both Shinji and Asuka can use the downtime to catch up on their studies, seeing as their grades haven't been very good. At this, Asuka tries to claim that the school's grading system is irrelevant. Kid, just shut up. You're not gonna win this one.

Anyway, Big Rigg Mahoney sends his regards from Okinawa.

So at the base, Shinji studies, and Asuka tries to do scuba diving in the pool, since she can't do it at Okinawa. Turns out Asuka's already graduated college? She claims the physics problem Shinji is working on is easy, but her grades were poor because she hasn't learned enough Kanji to read the questions. Also Asuka wonders aloud if thermal expansion would make her bust bigger. I wasn't going to say anything, but I think the animators on this episode already made her bust bigger, because Asuka looks like Boa Hancock in this turkey.

Meanwhile, a joint NERV-SSDF mission discovers a juvenile Angel inside a volcano. This is a huge opportunity to study the things and learn more about them, so the Eva pilots are mobilized to go in and retrieve it.

Asuka insists on being the one to actually made the dive, because I guess she drank like fifteen cups of coffee before this episode started. Settle down, dammit.

Asuka is chosen to make the dive, but her Eva will have to wear this dorky looking exosuit to withstand the temperature and pressure.

Also, Asuka herself has to wear a modified plugsuit that looks like this for... some reason? It's supposed to protect her from the heat, but she's going to be surrounded by the Eva, which will also be surrounded by an exosuit. How much more protection does she need? And why does inflating the plugsuit make it safer?

Asuka whines about these intolerable conditions, until Rei offers to pilot Unit 02 in her place. Asuka quickly changes her mind, since she can't bear the thought of getting left out of the mission. Geez, she's like a toddler!

So we go on the mission, and Asuka asks if Kaji will be here to see her in action, and Misato informs her that this is none of his damn business. It's called "professionalism", Asuka, look into it.

As they prepare, Misato explains that if the Angel can't be captured, or if it matures into adult form, then they'll have to destroy it. And if they fail, the UN will blow up the whole volcano, and all of them along with it. Shinji asks who would order such extreme measures, and duh, it's his dad, the guy in charge of the whole organization.

From here, most of the episode looks like it was filmed inside a Nintendo Virtual Boy. This probably was considered pretty badass in the late 90s, but no, it looks like crap. They just keep lowering Asuka further and further down in search of this thing, and then she finds it and puts it in some kind of rectangle.

Rectangle secured, mission accomplished, OR IS IT?

Turns out the Angel hatches just as Asuka starts heading back for the surface, and the device she used to contain the Angel can't handle its adult form. Misato orders her to release it and head back to the surface as quickly as she can.

The fight sucks because you can't see anything. Asuka had a "progressive knife" when she went down, but she dropped it during the descent. So Shinji tosses down his own and she catches it and fights back, but the thing is still incredibly strong and durable, becuase it lives inside a volcano for crying out loud.

At last, Asuka remembers that conversation about thermal expansion and uses that to win. Something about diverting the coolant in her Eva while she attacks with the progressive knife, but I can't see what she's doing and I probably wouldn't understand it anyway. The Angel disintegrates... I guess? And she returns to the surface.

So Misato takes them to a hot spring near the volcano to celebrate a job well done. The girls ask Shinji to toss them a bottle of shampoo over the retaining wall, and then he hears them... tickling each other? And he gets a boner? I guess that's a joke? A plot point? Why the fuck is this in the show?

There's also a cryptic exchange between Misato and Asuka. Misato has a scar on her abdomen which she says she got during Second Impact. Asuka asks Misato if she knows about her past, and Misato does but assures Asuka that they need to put it behind them. So I guess we'll find out what that means one of these days.

And there we are. This was dumb. Most of the show was Asuka babbling like an idiot, or people watching machines lower other machines into lava. The show continues to drop all these hints and clues about the characters' backstories, but it never puts any of the pieces together. It just gets really formulaic, and I think the best evidence of this is the fact that I got mixed up while playing this DVD, and I accidentally watched Episode 11 first, thinking it was 10. So I had to go back and watch this one, but I could have just as easily skipped it, because nothing happened that had any long-term consequences.

i think noise being nonbinary is already canon, and i hc roman as a trans guy because i liked the interpretation that his moment in the communicave was fueled by his doubts about ryker's acceptance of him (i dont remember who made that post but they were so right). i haven't seen transfem yb before but his backstory was that he was pressured by the bard king to be a living weapon, which was a role that didn't fit him. i believe that maybe he was pressured in other ways. 1/2

So I already loved this headcanon for the vibes but hearing the reasoning im like 👀

The canon reason for his reaction to the dream demon is that he fears he's not worthy of his family's sword/legacy (and by extention that Ryker thinks he's unworthy) and having that tied into his gender identity would be SUPER INTERESTING. Especially since Ryker already uses his name and pronouns and is presumably supportive of him (i love supportive dad Ryker sm). If Ryker does actually accept his identity despite his fears, maybe that suggests Roman is in fact worthy of the sword.

And Youngblood being forced into a masculine role makes so much sense. From what we've seen of the bard college it seems like a military institution?? (at the very least the bard guards + first chair are definitely a military) and that tends to be thought of as a "man's field" - actually im not sure if we've ever seen a female bard guard other than Flow (who I'm not sure is a bard guard actually?) And Britney Bitch (who has a different uniform.. are Flow and Britney circus performers??) I'm sure the bard king would value the aggressive type of hyper-masculinity in his soldiers, especially his secret weapon. Hes a bastard he's like that

Interested in what that would mean for Noise. He is in fact nonbinary in canon (i mean unless they're cis/binary trans and choose to use he/they for gender fuckery reasons anyway because that would be very slay) did they experience similar things? Did he escape the brunt of it because he wasn't the secret weapon that Youngblood was? Or was being first chair still just as bad? Noise clearly beats himself up over people thinking he doesn't deserve to be first chair - do they worry that their gender makes people think they're incapable because they're not a man? Oh you better believe I have headcanons, especially for a man like Legs. He's pretty mysterious and doesn't say a lot which gives me the pleasure to make stuff up about him based on the little things we do know from the show. Legs is mysterious, very, he ain't saying nothin, he ain't trustin nobody and the only people he talks to are his close friends. And some of these headcanons are:

Now it's obvious that both him and Louie have been friends with Tony since childhood but I believe, what happened before they met, Legs had his own gang and would usually terrorize other students on the playground of the same catholic school the three were all attending. And one day when Tony witnessed what Legs and his team were doing to a kid, he realized the talent that this young boy has and so he asked if Legs would join his junior mafia. Legs said no at first but after he realized who Tony was the son of, he decided to give the junior mafia a try and what followed after was a long and tight friendship. (I will write a huge origin story one day, with thoughts and my own imagination at play. Because if the writers are not gonna do it then I'll do it myself)

In "Homie the clown" he said that he saw four krustys even after he rubbed his eyes to see straight, (Even though there were only two krustys) which makes me think that he could possibly be short sighted and therefore would wear glasses. Though he doesn't at times when he's at work because according to himself, "No person would ever be afraid of a mobster with glasses." But he does wear them while he's at home.

We obviously know he has a son named "Calves" who appeared in the comics along with Louie's son and Michael. But I choose to see that as non-canon (Since he only came up once in comics, counting as his only appearance and the show never hints to Legs's son), yeah Calves is cute but I don't really see him being Legs's son. Who I do see as his daughter would be Piper from Bossy riot in "Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy", she has the same level of mischievousness as Calves does and is pretty extreme in her pranks. She's obviously Legs's daughter, with the way she's already in a sort of gang like friendgroup like Legs once was in his early childhood. (But I admit, calves could also exist in the real show. Though he would be the child of Legs's ex-wife, they divorced because of an affair he went through and so he sort of lost custody over Calves. Calves was also like 2 years old when that happened.) - Despite being so mysterious, he's actually the most kindest of the bunch. And he has been ever since childhood, his usual rambunctious demeanor was just for show and not tell what lies underneath him. But I do admit, he was more wild as a young kid than he is now. That likely changed due to his age but he is more calmer and friendlier than his childhood counterpart. He's the type of guy you can always wend yourself to if you have any problems and he also works as a sort of therapist for the other members, seeing as he has a degree in Psychology that he studied for as a second profession if his plans didn't go through in college. (he's a smart man, like I said)

Now Johnny Tightlips is a capo and Frankie is a soldier, Tony is the underboss and Don vittorio is the actual boss. Other mobsters we see are genuinely just soldiers or associates. Which leaves Louie and Legs to be uncategorized, And they're not really caporegimes either since there's already Johnny, Lefty and Righty in that position. Mafia's usually have three or four capos but I still choose to see Legs and Louie not as such, it just doesn't make sense. They started out with Tony as a small gang with only themselves to trust, it would have made sense if those two were capos back then since the gang was still small and struggling in the east end but as time flew by and more joined, Louie and Legs decided to step down from their capo positions to make room for Lefty and Righty, two more experienced capo's. And so they would stand back and just be hit-men, still involved in Tony's plans and operations.

Their friendship with Tony is what brings me to this conclusion, as capo's they had to spend most of their time outside on the streets with their soldiers, not even being close to Tony. So after Lefty and Righty joined, the two reduced themselves to being hit-men and bodyguards of Tony so that they could stay closer by his side and to protect him. Which would even make sense in reality since the two were never stated to be capo's, in the book Chief Wiggum's Book of Crime and Punishment, Legs is classified as the "Hired Goon" And the police records on the Springfield Mafia describe Legs as a "Gangster/Criminal/Suspicious" type of mobster. It wouldn't make sense for them to be capo's if they are so closely connected with Tony.

You know, Legs is very accompanied with the yakuza and other japanese mafias in springfield and the U.S.A so I feel like he knows a bit of japanese to talk with them. And he probably took karate when he was young.

Apparently in the Simpsons: Tapped out game Legs has 172 swiss army knives and he can't pay his rent because of that, which makes me think that he's got a serious problem. But hey, the man loves knives.

what He also mentioned in Tapped out was that he got a Master's in Fiscal Studies which makes me think Since he's an experienced mob doctor like Tony himself said

(Look at his cute ass smile when Tony mentions the slug, that is the smile of a son whose Father is telling other relatives about his talents) Which got me thinking. Okay so he went to college for two different reasons

He prolly studied another subject if his career as a doctor didn't go as planned. He's a pretty smart dude but still manages to fall for pranks set by other people, including Bart's. (One example is in the hilarious "Homie the clown" when Krusty asked to go the bathroom but actually left the country in reality, Legs said "When He's done in there, I gotta go" (Oh Legs, you sweet innocent man)

We don't even know his real name other than he's known as "Legs" because he's tall? And it can't be Max Legman 'cuz that just sounds like a child made it up, it's probably just an alias he uses when checking into hotels or telling girls in the nightclub to keep his cover. ( He's also shown to be quite the party animal seeing as he has appeared in some scenes like "Homerazzi" and "Flaming Moe's". Man likes to have fun.)

We know he has a slouched back and poor posture, which leaves some options for why it became that way. Maybe a injury to his spine or a disease that formed in his early childhood. I personally believe it could be Scheuermann's Kyphosis that caused his figure to turn out that way, it formed in his early childhood and when he was taken to the doctors because of it they advised for him a back brace since he was still a child and growing. His parents couldn't afford that, neither could they get physical therapy for him, they just barely could get money for pain medication to at least have their son in not all so much pain. But nowadays he got the needed Money to get physical therapy so that his condition isn't gonna get any worse.

I feel like he likes to listen to classical Italian music, opera especially, he's a big fan of Renata Tebaldi and Andrea Bocelli. Though his musical taste often gets in the way of Louie's whenever they are driving in the car, always arguing about what to put on. And sometimes even Tony gets caught in between their squabble, forcing the three to often drive around just sitting in silence.

His favorite dessert is Panna cotta. Which he usually orders when he, Louie, Johnny, Frankie and Tony go to La Coffee Nostra for some afternoon tea break from their work. - he's a professional pool player, just try and challenge him to a match, in the end you will only leave with a broken spirit. - He's honestly such a women magnet, not because it's his manners and ways of treating ladies but because it's also of his looks. (Man's got a good fashion taste) Each time he enters a new club all the ladies just swarm him and treat him to a drink. He often leaves clubs with lipstick marks all over his face. - Since he's the tallest out of everyone in the family, he likes to pick on Frankie and Louie who are the shortest of the bunch. They know it's all just fun and jokes but even they can get annoyed by Legs. Especially when he bends his knees to get down on their eye level to talk with them. Now these are just some of my many headcanons about it, Made for my own enjoyment.

Chapter 11: Truth

A week had passed with ease and thanks to the Angelis virus any sign of harm to my body had vanished. The day came when I was supposed to complete my first set of missions for Wesker. The escort detail would be a walk in the park and the b.o.w. hunt even more so. The thing I was worried about was gathering Intel on the B.S.A.A., that alone I was worried about. Chris knows what I look like as do the B.S.A.A. higher ups.

I had just finished assembling my med kit with my viral stablizer securely stored away when a forceful knock rang from the door.

''Come in." I said pulling my hair in to a low pony tail.

"Alistar are you ready to go?" Steve asked with a black backpack on. He looked like a college student about to visit his parents.

"Almost, I have to prepare a few rounds of viral stablizer. I have a horrible feeling that something bad will happen." I stated.

"You seem a tad paranoid, I thought you were a cool collected killer like Wesker." Steve joked.

"Haha yea no, I can't ignore my instincts in situations like this." I sighed, "I'm having the same feeling from when the Russia base was shut down and we all know what happened that night.".

"That bad huh?" Steve said shifting his weight from one leg to the other.

"Yea, but oh well we are already running behind because of me ." I stocked my herbs, viral stablizer cache and lifted my brief case, "let's go.".

Steve started out the door and I followed  in suit. The halls seemed lighter than normal as if the thought of the outside world brightened my view of the rotting hellhole I'm in. The halls were filled with soldiers and researchers rushing to their proper stations.  This was almost like my time in Russia.

I let out a small chuckle when we went to the air strip. That was a big fucking mistake.

"And why are you laughing?!" A shrill female voice broke the peaceful silence, just my damn luck.

"Ah Ms. Gionne, how are you this morning?" Steve asked politely.

"Terrible, Albert's pda alarm went of too early and he overdosed on his serum. He can barely move at the moment due to the migraine!" She screeched.

"That's why she's here instead of him." A weaselly voice piped up, it was Irving.

"You must be Mr. Irving, We have never been formally introduced. " I extended my hand, "My name is Alistar Lancaster, I'll be the head of your security detail during the duration of your transaction."

"Tis' a pleasure, you seem very familiar. Did we pass in the hallway at some point?" He asked shaking my hand.

"No sir, I'm afraid that I'm normally in the training rooms or in the research labs. I don't have the authorization to roam around the base." I now ever so slightly  to sell the loyal lackey act.

At this point Excella is turning a deep shade of red, "Irving quit making friends with the "help" and load up the plane. Also Irving be sure to study your notes on the buyer, we don't want a repeat of last time."

"Of course Excella and I do expect compensation for my services if things go according to plan." He stated, turning around grabbing a crate.

"Mr. Burnside Wesker requests you keep an eye on your charge the full time. He doesn't want anything to happen to "it". He has spent a lot of assets keeping it in working condition. I have  special orders for "Ms. Lancaster" from Albert so the "special operative"  will need to stay behind for a bit."

Yet again this woman was making me lose my temper. Not even speaking of me as if I was a living being but a piece of property. I was pissed. I motioned Steve to go on as I knew I'd be fine.

Steve nodded, "if you say so boss, I'll get that Mr. Irving.".

"Right." He squeaked out feeling the tension in the air.

Once they hurried off I turned towards Excella, "What are my orders?"

As soon as I asked I felt a sharp sting across my face, "I don't know who you think you are barging into my world and tearing it down but be sure of this you bitch. If you even step out of line once I'll make sure you never see the light of day again."

"So that is what this is about....heh what a fool." I chuckled again.

"Again with the laugh! What is so damn funny?" She glared daggers into me and slapped me across the face again.

I place my thumb and index fingers over my open eyes and removed my contacts and let my eyes flare the ice cold blue, "What's so funny you ask, is the fact that you think you can actually do something to me. I am here of my own volition to serve as my teachers pawn  in her stead. Unlike you, who is just trying to get in to the pants of power hungry sadist. So from now on stay out of my way."

I cracked my neck and smirked staring straight in to her eyes "One last thing lay your disgusting hands on me again I'll send you to your grave, stupid girl."

She scuttled back shaking ever so slightly, "Oh look I need to get back to tending to Albert."

She ran off. I placed my contacts back in and headed towards the plane. I have some calls I need to make.

[Weskers P.O.V]

I was sitting at my desk clutching my head, the pain was very disorienting. Exella left to see Ms. Lancaster and Mr. Irving. Damnable technology, I knew I should of programmed it myself. I looked up to look at  the cc TV footage to see Excella giving my orders to Mr. Burnside and Mr. Irving.

Shortly after Excella arrived Irving and Steven started to head towards the plane. Steven stopped for a short moment only for Ms. Lancaster motioning for him to continue. I  found this action peculiar as I had no special order for her. That was when Ms. Gionne slapped Alistar.

I watched the screen with intrigue as she was struck again. Much to my interest Ms. Lancaster didn't flinch instead her stance became firm and her posture became intimidating. She appeared to touch her face and said something to Excella.

She backed up terrified of Ms. Lancaster, almost falling back. Ms. Lancaster simply turned around and marched to the plane pulling out her PDA and mine started to ring. Growling at the sound I answered quickly.

"I take it you just saw what your assistant tried to pull correct." Ms Lancaster's voice spoke with authority.

"Yes I did, tell me did she give my orders to your group?" I asked rubbing my temple.

"She gave orders to Steve and Mr. Irving. Did you have a message for me or did she lie to me as well?" Ms. Lancaster asked with a serious  tone of voice.

"Yes I did I wanted to warn you the area of the exchange has been infested with B.S.A.A. agents. I'm sure you understand what that means." I stated even more infuriated.

"Becareful on over dosing on that damn medicine, I don't want to see you becoming a destabilized mess." She chided, "Keep it up and you turn in to a beast like Colonel Surgei.".

She released the call and I sat the pda on my desk. Why the hell would she care about my health. It's not like I give a rat's ass about her.

Knock knock

"Albert it's Excella, may I enter?" She asked.

"Enter." I groaned internally, nothing but annoyances today.

[Main pov]

It was about mid flight when I stood from my seat. I had to see what arrangements the Mr. Irving had made for our lodgings. I walked back to where Steve and Irving were sitting.

"Mr. Irving." I stated.

"Please let's dispense with the formalities please call me Ricardo." He said smiling.

"Alright Ricardo, I was wondering what lodgings were set up for us." I asked.

"Normally Excella sets that up but she didn't this time. She said that "that filthy mutt" doesn't deserve to use my connections. I hate to be blunt, but I believe she means you." He sighed pointing at me.

"I don't know why that woman has always had it out for me." I shrugged "But no matter, I can make  arrangements for lodgings with a call. I have a place in my mind I'll inform the pilot."

I pulled out my phone and stepped into the restroom. I pulled up the contact and dialed the number.

Ring ring.

"Pheonix Core lodge, Archer speaking." Came through the phone.

"Juna, I need a favor." I spoke gently not to be heard by others.

"TABITHA WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN I'VE BEEN TRYING TO CONTACT." The receiver rang out.

"Archer the plan is in motion and we can discuss details after I arrive. Right now I need my room set up, well as two suites. The Pheonix core lodge will be hosting a future ally tonight." That cut him off and there was silence, "Juna are you still?"

He let out a heavy sigh,"Yes I am, I was just worried about you. I'll have the rooms set with in the next few hours. A bit of warning there is a massive hunting group who have been causing an issue about the off limits grounds and I'm not done lecturing you."

"Thanks June. I'll see you later and tell those idiot's the owner will be there shortly to discuss the matter." I said hanging up.

I pulled of my over shirt revealing the extensive scarring. With a sigh and a roll of the neck I redid my hair. I washed my hands and exited the bathroom. Steve greeted me outside the restroom.

"You ok I thought I heard screaming in there." Steve asked.

"Yea it was one of my contacts, I kind of fell out of contact do to starting to work for Wesker." I rubbed the back of my head.

"Oh that's understandable, did you make sleeping and housing arrangements?"

"Yes I did, the Pheonix Core Lodge. It was a passion project of Tabitha.  She said if she ever got out of the umbrella scene, she'd run a hunting lodge. I'll have the drivers take us once we land."

"That sounds good to me, Hey question." He  said.

"Yea what's wrong?" I asked.

Steve smiled and pulled out a deck of cards, "Do you know how  to play speed?".

"Your on." I chuckled and we started playing.

[Weskers P.O.V.]

I was listening to Tabithas recordings. It detailed the year before I joined the management training facility.  She was quite solemn and  rarely did much.   The few times she spoke with Markus it was quite interesting what he was interested in. From cell decay to certain chemical compounds that causes a boost in neuro activity. 

"At the start of the next year, everything started to rapidly change for me." Her recorded voice sighed, "I was sitting in class when Dr. Markus walked in and introduced two people, one was with him and the other showed up just after Markus had started. Their names were Albert Wesker and William birkin. William seemed layed back more go with the flow type and Albert was  very stiff with an almost by the book personality, polar opposites.  Dr. Markus had me be a mentor to William. He was a kind man and very smart. Dr. Markus decided to mentor Wesker. Did I know then I would marry Albert about seven years later? No, if I were to be honest I thought that he would be a major hard ass and a stick in the mud. I was definitely right on one of those. " She spoke sounding nostalgic.

I heard a metal door slam, "Agent 748, come its time for your injections." A familiar heavily Russian Male voice  said.

"GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE BEFORE I RIP OUT YOUR THOAT YOU DEPLORABLE SHIT STAIN MAN." Tabitha shrieked so loud it  distorted the audio and made my head throb.

"Its been two months, if you don't start following my orders I'll have Ivan throw you in to the testing room." Surgei said

"GO AHEAD AND TRY I'LL KILL THE DAMN THING IF IT LAYS A FINGER ON ME." She shouted again, I heard a grunt on the recording and the metal door slam again.

"God I despise that man. Once I figure a way out of this mess I'm going to try and find way to fix my family. My son, my daughter, I regret not raising them every day and yes I had kids Wesk. In '82 and in '92n and yes they were yours. I couldn't abort them and what's more I wanted a family.  However the would of never been the case, Spencer  he found out and tried to have me transfer the custody to him both times. I'm sorry to drop the bomb on that but seeing as how I'm more than likely bound for a shallow unmarked grave here I'd rather be honest with who was listening." She started crying and I was at loss for words.

"I couldn't have umbrella have a hold of my kids.   Look what happened with Sherry! Her own father tried to kill her when he mutated! I'm sorry Albert but you were always so wrapped around Spencer's finger and I was terrified. I was a damn fool. I found her, our daughter and I can't bringing myself to face it. I know I won't be forgiven but at least I've finally been honest even if these are just recordings on a private drive." There was banging on the metal door and a sigh, "I need to end this here for now. Time to be cut open .......again." .

"Recording ended." The robotic voice said.

I was silent, the weight of what was said was extremely heavy. I quickly accessed the files Tabitha had Alistar present me with. I couldn't find any files with her name on it. Then the Colonels voice rang in my head. In the recording  he called her agent 748.

I typed it in and it pulled up the Angelis main test subject file. The title was Arch-Angel. It detailed an experiment involving U.B.C.S. agent 748. The virus was a different strand of the progenitor virus that had extreme mutation risk.   It was noted on the file that those who had children had a higher compatibility do to an increased amount of CPH4 able to increase cell energy. The subject had two kids known to the umbrella corporation. One was found and measures have been taken to obtain, target is a 16 year old female with a small family in Russia.

Notes added by Colonel Surgei, looking under the section I saw something that made my blood  boil. It stated.

"If only comrade Wesker could see his blushing bride now. I complied with Lord Spencer's request and he was correct. Her having his kids showed she had just as much promise as him. She bonded with the new progenitor strain even better than I did with the T- Virus. The daughter is a more than like candidate as well. Lord Spencer's said to call the new virus Angelis, as even gods need servants. I have to be sure  to clip this Angel's wings. Can't have this one fly away again my bed will be so cold. " I heard his voice in my head as I read. The tone mocking me and filled me with rage.

I stood up and in a blind rage punched a hole in the desk. This was what Spencer had planned for her. A death with out peace, with out resolution.

One that I brought her too. I tried but for the first time is a very very long time I, a man ment to be a god cried.

This is what umbrella made us. It just proves to me more what I have to do. I will cleanse this filthy planet of all the undesirable garbage.

Maybe then and only then can I make this guilt go away.

while elektra leaving him did perpetuate his trauma related to his abandonment issues, i don't particularly agree that elektra is at fault for it. she was being manipulated by the same man that put matt's abandonment issues in motion for the entirety of her relationship with matt, she was just as much of a college kid in (what they thought was) love as he was so to phrase it as if she needs to claim just as much responsibility as stick, an old man who hae a history of recruiting and manipulating children into being his soldiers, is just not very fair. but yes! even though, at first, he made his decisions intending to help or protect the people he loves, they didn't work quite as well as he anticipated they would and in the backfire, he indulged in his self-destructive tendencies towards the end of season two.

now back to the point about stick manipulating elektra for the majority of her relationship with matt. i think people often disregard elektra's history when it comes to her relationship so they don't usually consider pre-existing traumas elektra had before her relationship with matt, much less how they would affect how she acted in their relationship. elektra was under the care of stick for her entire conscious life and was being manipulated into being a soldier for his doing. her premonition to kill most definitely originated from the fact that it was what stick was training her to and that it was likely her response to a lot of situations in her life, especially she could not immediately understand or sort through the emotions that came with a particular event. what makes anyone think that would change just because she's in a relationship with a guy? what makes you think she would change in the slightest considering that the relationship exists because the guy that trained her to be a killing machine was there, in the background still doing so and still manipulating her? and we aren't even considering the fact that if anything were to go too wrong he was ready to kill her. those things just don't disappear because matt is an Angel or whatever. she isn't inherently tied to matt's state of being so him being a good person isn't automatically going to make her a good person. later season two proved that, she said she would try because he was the first person who believed in her and she did try. despite her initial fuck up with her reaction to violence (as previously stated, killing someone) with the child that attacked matt in his own home, her last words are literally, "i know what it is like to be good now." (or something similar) after helping matt save the people that the hand kidnapped. to say that her being herself, which is a traumatized person, exists to 'push matt's boundaries' is erasure of all her character development.

i also don't necessarily agree with that line that foggy used, considering that he said it in anger. i don't think anything he said in that conversation should be taken at face value but it is a good indicator of the bad decisions he makes in reaction to trauma (what i didn't include in the meme) and how they affect his life.

people that put all the blame on elektra are missing out on the nuance of matt...

i don't agree with this though. matt isn't an inherently selfish character, in fact he is so selfless it's detrimental to his own well being and that's displayed time and time again throughout the show. i can understand how someone would think that though considering that a lot of his response to trauma is to ultimately protect himself but does simply having trauma and responding to it accordingly make someone selfish? no and i think it's scary to think of someone like that. it doesn't help that his abandonment issues stem from the idea that people are better off without him. that isn't selfish in the slightest; he's giving up his chance at relationships for the well being of the other person.
