Thinking about Dawntrail's final zone and how you normally don't get to say goodbye when someone dies. I know movies and TV shows love to show you tearful goodbyes, but that is normally not a thing in real life. When have you ever hold a loved one in your arms being able to say your final words to them? No, normally you are getting a call. A call with the bad news. Or you wait outside the hospital room and the doctor comes out with a grave face. And even if it was a slow process and you expected it... The person who dies normally is so out of it that you can say goodbye to them, but they don't ackknowledge that you are there at all. And we see that in Dawntrail. It starts with Namikka. When we find her, she is so old that she barely recognizes anything around her anymore, slowly dying of old age, not even recognizing Wuk Lamat who she loved like a daughter. And then she dies. Wuk Lamat has just talked to her a couple days ago and now she's gone. And that is how losing someone in real life feels. You are not getting prepared for it. And I know what I am talking about. While I didn't lose him, I was told that it could be over in minutes, so I had to prepare myself for it... and I tell you, it feels AWFUL. And now let's look at Erenville. While he finds his mom again, she is already an endless. And he learns much later that she died. Now imagine she would never have been an endless. He would have come back and would have to learn that his mom is dead. He has been away for a couple years, looking forward to get back home and then this. It is no surprise he is an emotional mess in the last two final zones. And then we have Krile's parents. She never knew her biological parents. She came to Eorzea as an infant. She got raised by Galuf and that was the only family she knew. She never had a chance to know her parents... And Living Memory, it made it possible for these goodbyes to happen. It is the one positive thing about the zone. It gave those characters closure. Wuk Lamat could have closure with Namikka. Krile could meet her parents for the first time and come to terms with them being dead already. And Erenville could get closure about his mom's death, as messy as their relationship was. Yes, there is also Otis, but it is his other version. The one on Tural was the Soma Otis (if you don't know the game Soma, please play it or watch a LP, it's fantastic) and the one up there is Endless Otis. So I didn't talk about him because he feels like two different characters. I am thinking about that because in my WoL's lore, he lost his mom to a slow sickness and him being in Living Memory, he had to think about her, knowing that she is not an endless and won't be there. And that he stayed with her as she died, but it wasn't a tearful goodbye, it was him holding the hand of a person who doesn't even recognize him anymore. And that hurt. That hurt more than her dying ever could. That she never said goodbye to him. I think Dawntrail, especially the final zone, is a deeply personal story about some of the writers having to cope with the death of a loved one. Because it feels so REAL! It is the most real I have seen death and grief seen depicted, even with the whole "forever in denial" phase of the Alexandrians. And I see this all the time because the people who hit Dawntrail the hardest have lost someone or almost lost someone. I think it is beautiful that Dawntrail doesn't shy away from the narrative of death being a neccessary part of life, but also, what the death of a loved one does to the ones who are left behind.

I know nothing about Persona let alone Goro Akechi but after reading the bsf and yan profile post I want to give this man a hug (and my tits). His story seems so sad ;-; and he's so pretty and for what?? 💢

Honestly, as much as I enjoy genshin I never truly found it to have any meaningful or extremely well written characters (which is not a bad thing, I just can't take them seriously when they all look like that lmao). All credit to making me think twice about them goes to writers and artists in the fandom. So the change in content feels soooooo nice. Made me appreciate your writing in another way

I've heard about Persona a LOT for years, but I didn't have a huge drive to play it until your liveposting (p.s I love the LP so much) and especially the posts with that one insane policeman guy who is a loser (affectionate, also giving him my pussy). Any recs? 😅

HE IS MY BABY BOY you're so right he is so pretty 😖😖😖 Akechi is genuinely an excellently written character, and Persona 5 Royal is one of the few games I think fully deserves to be so hyped as it is.

Tbh I think the problem genshin and similar games has is that there's so many characters, you have to essentially go out of your way to dig into lore to get anything beyond surface level from them. This happens a lot in series with lots of characters — like with Danganronpa for example, your experience of a lot of characters completely changes upon playing their free time events. A lot of genshin characters get very little screen time on the main story, so all their characterization is in their quests, lines, and character profile content. Which to be fair, with a game of this nature that's kinda the only way to really do it, so, I'm just glad they give us that extra content tbh. I've played some gachas that would introduce new characters but give very little beyond a design and name which is kinda sad when you want to know more about the lil guy you're playing with.

But AAAAAAAAAAAAAA thank you so much anon I am going to ramble here, but I'll put a tl;dr at the bottom!

Soooo if you want to get into Persona, I'd recommend the series in a certain order with some notes. There's 5 main entries in the series and a lot of spinoffs.

A word of advice in general with marathoning a game series: with any series it's a good idea to play in order of chronological and thus technological progression, especially if you intend to play the series back to back, otherwise going from a more recent game to an older one can damper your experience due to the decrease in graphical quality, gameplay smoothness, and general content quantity.

However for this series, the ideal order to play really depends on the factors of 1) which version of Persona 3 you choose to play, and 2) if you want to play Persona 1 & 2.

Regarding Persona 1 and 2: These are some of those games where your enjoyment will strongly depend on whether or not you're a person who is okay with some of the frustrations, limitations and slowness/jankiness common to old games (they came out between 1996-1999). I know some people don't mind or see it as a sort of vintage charm, while others get very frustrated with that — if you're the latter, I'd recommend saving yourself the frustration and skipping them, but if you like old games or have a high tolerance for jankiness, you could start here. I will also say that, even amongst the vintage/90s games fan crowd, P2 is definitely more popular and considered better than P1. It's also much better on the aforementioned issues.

Also, unless you have an original PlayStation or PSP, you'll have to emulate these.

Regarding Persona 3: there's several versions — the original came out in like 2006, then there was a remake version called P3 FES which added an epilogue (which is being added to the recent remake soon anyway), then a PSP remake called Persona 3 Portable (which has ports on modern consoles), then the most recent remake, Persona 3 Reload, came out just a few months ago in 2024.

Obviously the newest remake has vastly improved graphics and added lots of gameplay content. However, one of the biggest differences is that P3 Portable had the option to play as a female protagonist — this altered a lot of aspects of the game and is exclusive to that version (which has disappointed a lot of people hoping she'd be in the 2024 remake), so you can't play as her if you play Reload (unless, I believe, you play PC, there's a volunteer team currently making a mod for her).

Personally, I bought P3 Reload, and couldn't get into it, so I dropped it. Then I bought P3P on a whim and LOVE it so far. Getting to play as the girl protagonist makes a massive difference in my opinion, and more than compensates for the older graphics/gameplay. It's not just the romance routes either, her dialogue options, interactions, music, and overall vibe is different enough that it changes the feel of the story.

It really depends on what you value more — 2024-tier visual quality/gameplay and the epilogue, versus the Female Protagonist experience, so just pick which you prefer.

For the order thing, if you choose to play P3P (or the original/FES for whatever reason), I'd start here, but if you want to play Reload, I'd play it either last or just before P5 Royal.

Moving on, Persona 4: Golden and Persona 5: Royal are both the definitive editions of their respective games. They're remakes of the originals with a lot of added content, and unlike Persona 3, there's no reason to play the older versions over these. Notably their themes/vibes are kinda opposite of each other (big city world-scale societal rebellion versus small rural town murder mystery), I wouldn't say either story is better or worse, they're not really comparable and more a matter of personal taste.

As for the stories, admittedly if you've read my posts, you've essentially already been spoiled on the identity of the killers, but honestly it's still worth experiencing the story, there's multiple big plot twists before and after the reveals regarding Akechi/Adachi.

I would play Persona 5 Royal last, largely because it's widely considered the best entry to the series and is by far the longest. However if you only intend to play one game, it should definitely be P5 Royal. The only real flaw to P5 is it's much easier than previous games.

From here, there's a few more spinoff games, whether or not you want to play them really just depends on if you enjoy the genre. There's a bit of lore in some of them but nothing critical.

Dancing All Night/Starlight/Moonlight - dancing rhythm games

Arena Ultimax - fighting game, acts as an epilogue to P3&4

Persona Q 1&2

These are Nintendo DS spinoffs with chibi style art. I haven't played these and admittedly don't know much about them, I think they're dungeon crawler genre? It's popular for the aspect of which it involves the characters of the different main games, so you get to see them interact with each other.

The downside is that these games are oddly expensive, I think because there weren't too many copies. I intend to get them eventually.

Persona 5 Tactica/Strikers:

These are P5 spinoffs that put the cast in alternate stories, strikers is the closest to a true sequel from my understanding, tactica is more of a dungeon-crawler. I didn't get them because Akechi isn't in strikers and is just minor dlc for tactica.

The Phantom X

This is upcoming I believe, it's going to be a mobile game with a new cast.

The TL;DR of my advice:

- Play P2 only if you're into vintage gaming

- Play P1 only if you're REALLY into vintage gaming

- Play Persona 3 Portable if you really value the female protagonist/male character romance experience, otherwise play Persona 3 Reload

- If you play the original Persona 3, FES, or P3 Portable: start with that, then P4 Golden, then P5 Royal

- If you play Persona 3 Reload: play P4 Golden FIRST, then both P5 Royal and P3 Reload in either order.

- Play the spinoffs just based on what type of games you like, if any.

I was musing with some friends the other day, and I thought our thoughts would be interesting to talk about. In WMMAP, Jennette basically takes on the role of LP!Athanasia. She has a more downcast, gentle disposition, contrasting WMMAP!Athanasia's lively and sunny 'personality'. And I say that in quotes because she basically took Jennette's personality, eventually making her own spin on it and turning into the sunshine personification we know and love as Athy. She even said as a kid that Claude liked Jennette, so she should act like Jennette (therefore starting her lovey-dovey act with Claude). There's tons of scenes showing how lonely Jennette is. She's deserate for a family, like LP!Athy was desperate for her father's love (her family). She clings onto our Athy, and even though she's kind to Jennette, she still leaves her completely in the dark and alone, until the end of the series. And on a similar note, Athy.. Knew about Jennette's identity and situation the entire time. Jennette had been told her entire life that she is Claude's daughter and Athy's sister, and Athy knows this, but she still leaves her to stand. Repeatedly, she acts loving and happy with Claude right in front of Jennette's face, and treats her like an outsider. (Example; when she fell in the lake and Claude almost let her drown, or episode 82 when Jennette asks if Claude is alright, and Athy tells her to go home). This also applies to the Debutante Ball- While Athanasia shines that day, Jennette is left behind by both Claude and Athy. Athy knows all about her, but lets Jennette watch her act close with Claude, and then scurries off with him leaving her behind. Of course, this isn't to bash Athy or anything, she was in survival mode at the Debutante. And a lot of times around Jennette, she was paranoid that the 'plot' would fall back into place somehow. I'm just pointing out some things. I know that some people will go "Well in LP Jennette got her happy ending, and Athy didn't!!!" But that isn't true. Athy doesn't know what the ending is of LP, and we're shown through visions/dreams that LP certainly didn't have a happy ending. (The Empire burning down, Claude getting sick, etc). I can only really assume that has to do with Aeternatas. They both die a miserable death. We can assume that when Anastacius shows up in LP, like shown in the visions, Jennette realizes at some point she's been lied to her entire life by the people she loves. And then dies, though I'm not sure in what way, we just see the empire in fiery shambles after. Additionally - Claude never even loved Jennette, he just used her to cure his headaches. So Jennette never "stole" his love from Athy. In WMMAP, though, our girls both finally get their happy endings. Athy wins Claude's love, and becomes Crown Princess. Jennette finds happiness with her real father and gets to start over in Mieta, while also taking on her mother's green eyes - which I see as her making peace with the past she thought she knew, and no longer needing to hold onto the Imperial family. I really don't get it when people compare Athy and Jennette, in "who suffered more", or "who is better than who". Aside from WMMAP being a father-daughter story, I argue that it can also be seen as a story about 2 girls finding their happy endings.

(side note: controversial, but I always find myself feeling more bad for Jennette than I do Athy TvT I think it's because we only ever see LP!Athy's suffering from very far away, we rarely even see her face, and we usually just see our happy-go-lucky WMMAP!Athy. Meanwhile we see Jennette's hardships more closely, making me feel more bad for her. That's just how I feel tho!!)

I don't like putting two girls against each other in trauma olympics but if you want to insist one of them had it worse than the other, the answer should be Jennette and not Athy. Jennette was never loved for who she was, she had to witness the death of her family one by one until she was the only one left behind amidst the destruction of her home country to either die a violent death or become Aeternitas meat puppet, an accessory to his crimes and forced to witness him committing atrocities through her but powerless to stop him.

At least lp Athy had Lily, Jennette had no one. I feel like LP Athy was a lot freer too. LP Athy's lack of magic saved her from court intrigue and being used as a tool by greedy nobles wheras Jennette was manipulated from the start. Athy could pursue her own interests and these happened to align with the duties of an Empress, contrary to Jennette who never wanted to rule but was forced into intense studies to learn everything a princess should know.

I never fully understood why Athy didn't just tell Jennette the truth about her parentage. Leaving the part out that Jennette is a construct made of black magic, she could have at least told her Anastasius is her real father and warned her that if she revealed her identity, Claude might harm her. Lucas, as the magician of the tower, could confirm her words. Jennette would stop seeking him out and if Athy continued their friendship, Jennette's need for familial love would still be satisfied. They could have been both happy together. There were no advantages to keeping it a secret, only disadvantages and the risk she would lose Jennette's trust if she ever learned that Athy had deceived her.

As for the question, that's interesting to think about. I don't often think about more potential stories for the Darkwing universe, aside little bits and pieces here and there (mainly a long overdue holiday for the mallard family that doesn't result in fighting crime–they deserve a little break, I think about that cruise Dw wanted to take Lp on in 'All's Fahrenheit in love and war' all the time )

BUT.

There is ONE potential thing I wish was explored and that's a final/ third showdown with Taurus Bulba. I've rambled on about it in a previous post, but Bulba is such an important villain in the show–having a genuine impact on the cast. Not to mention at the end of 'The Steerminator', Bulba says something along the lines of 'This isn't the last you'll see of me', INTENDING we'd get to see more, but that never happened.

I think it would've been very interesting to conclude the story of Taurus Bulba, especially with how 'The Steerminator' ended. We were shown that both Darkwing and Gosalyn struggled with his return, both having a moment of panic when seeing him (which is sososo interesting)

BUT ALSO. Before he became part robot, he was a lot more rational and calculated–which in some way made him a lot more dangerous than let's say megavolt. He's already a lot more threatening than any other villain of the show. But in 'The Steerminator', he's lost parts of himself, being a lot easier to anger, he acts more on impulse. But he's a lot stronger physically. Pairing that with Darkwing's fear of getting Gosalyn hurt or worse, (and kind of dying himself) + Gosalyn's trauma regarding him–it would be incredibly interesting to see just how'd they'd deal with him for a third time. To deal with Taurus Bulba whose only goal is to get to Darkwing and potentially succeed because of how much he knows about them; their fears and weaknesses.

I really do think it could have been such a cool way to end the show, or just have an episode regarding Bulba's final arc and explore Dw's and Gosalyn's characters further. (I know Bulba appears in the comics, but I'm not really counting those here.)

Not much else, though I do wonder what the transition period looked like for Drake after the Darkly Dawns the Duck. He'd spent so long alone, lowk isolating himself (man didn't even have a house 😮‍💨) and suddenly he lived in a neighborhood with a family? I believe that would've been difficult, ESPECIALLY for him. He's shown throughout the show that he finds people to be difficult to be around, not to mention his tendencies to overwork and disconnectment from the identity of 'Drake Mallard' (a clash reunion reference to where he lost his mask. He doesn't particularly value himself without the costume due to years of being unimportant and hardly acknowledged) and in 'Water Way to Go' he claimed to "get manically depressed on the weekends" (do what u will with that)

I know cartoon wise, they wouldn't explore that aspect of Drake re-adjusting to civilian life again, but I still like to imagine it. I think Drake's character is soso interesting and that little period specifically could have been intriguing. I don't think I've come across any fic delving into that yet either 😞.

(bonus detail: Drake actually didn't have his temper as a child. In his backstory episodes, he doesn't really possess it. In clash reunion he is kinda full of himself, but he's not angry to the point of lashing out at someone. This flaw only develops after he'd become an adult and lived in the tower alone for who knows how long 💀)

Ilmo's Arc + Ending

I might've already talked about this a bit, but @zephyrone01 and I often talked about how Ilmo's character arc/story was just... dropped at the end of the game. And in extension, the whole Cult of the Tree part up to the FBC's intervention and Ilmo's arrest.

It's sad because he is literally one of the leaders of the Cult, the mysterious group you spent a large part of the game, figuring out if they're really bad and what their motives might be. But in the end it no longer seems to have an impact on the story.

You probably have watched this silly guy in the funny commercials and, if you didn't have any suspicions, get surprised that he isn't only in the Cult, he is a main member. But in the jail scene, things are dire so you don't have any time to profile or talk to him because it quickly cuts to a cutscene which then leads to you getting chased by Scratch.

His dialogue with Saga after Jaakko's death is purely optional despite him granting the player crucial information about the Cult and it seems many people overlook him or don't know he's still there. When I watched John Wolfe's LP, he even thought Ilmo had also died until he, by accident, bumped into him. Apparently there are also glitches if you reload the chapter, he just doesn't spawn.

So let's say, the jail cutscene is the last time you see Ilmo and then suddenly he reappears at the eternal Deerfest. Feels kinda odd, to give him a whole scene in that jail together with Jaakko and Scratch/Alan and then he's never seen again.

Now, if you do talk to him after the jail sequence, he will reveal the truth about the Cult: that they were trying to protect their town and BF from the Taken. Ilmo says he will try to round up the Cult or what's left of them and then again, you don't see him until you're playing as Alan in the altered BF. He just stands there because his dialogue and animations aren't triggered properly. He actually talks about the last Return book, hinting to the player where to get the book. Here's Zephyrone01's video showing him talking and gesturing.

What I might've added to give his story a bit more closure than what we got:

Make talking to him after Jaakko's death mandatory. Unskippable. It's literally a narrative piece Saga was trying to stitch together all this time. Why is it optional???

Involve him in the Dark Ocean Summoning fight. He can be support, similar to Estevez and Casey. Honestly, his mental state aside, he was in the best physical position to actually help out, given the fact Casey and Estevez were injured. (Also, I would've loved to see Ilmo's reaction to that stage fight. His barks would've been great.) It would've helped to 'redeem' him, from being the assumed bad Cultist to helping Saga in her fight.

Maybe mid-fight, he gets a call from the other Cultists to help out in BF which explains why he got absorbed into the changed reality.

If he doesn't get involved in the fight, we could've at least gotten a brief cutscene where he and the remaining Cultists head to BF to continue protecting it or something. Again, this would help portray Ilmo in a positive light.

TLDR: Ilmo's story arc got cut short after his arrest, revealing the truth about the Cult should've been mandatory and not optional and there should've been at least a small cutscene of Ilmo going to BF to protect it before getting absorbed in the changed reality.

2024 Media Post Time - Master

21. Mouthwashing

I saw people posting about this, some writers and artists I like too so I decided to watch it. I just have random thoughts so this isn't too cohesive. I ended up watching Vinny Vinesauce, Jacksepticeye, ManlyBadassHero and Jack Manifold play it and it was fun hearing the voices for everything. Jack Manifold had a fun LP to be honest since he tells his thoughts out loud and is quite expressive even though he was confused.

Curly's cries of pain reverberating through the ship's walls when Jimmy goes to find Anya and Swansea in the middle of the night.

I like the parallel incidents and chronology of the game. The crash and the Judgement side by side as the perspective switches between Jimmy and Curly. The ship is noticeably different (The foam, the bottles of mouthwash) as is the tension. Before it's all about emotional stress and after it's all about survival as they slowly go mad and get drunk off something inedible every waking moment.

I think Curly's laugh when Jimmy gets a hold of the gun is at his own expense. He thought he could trust him and even if his callousness or mistreatment of Anya proved something about his character to Curly, a gun in the hand has no second meaning. It's a failing on himself as a captain if he couldn't see Jimmy's corruption before this. The gun was the one thing Anya wanted to keep away from Jimmy, locking the room this time he would still not allow her any control.

And I guess Jimmy resents Curly because of his relative success and the praise he receives, and he is also impulsive and low empathy. These attitudes don't blend well together. It feels like he's jealous of his position as captain and when they get let go wants to disgrace his name by crashing the ship. Since he's so tired of hearing his praises.

I liked seeing Curly's true appearance before the disfigurement only at the end half of the game. After playing as him for other portions, and as Jimmy only seing him post incident. Now we know the damage done to his body. A "How did we get here?" moment when Jimmy cuts his leg off.

I imagined what he could look like and it wasn't too far off "Curly" with curly hair. Though from the ID cards it seems like it's really his name too. I thought he might have more brightness in the eyes but well he's definitely under some stress...

I wish we could see more scenes of Curly's caretaking, I think it's an intimate part of the game but Anya was the main caretaker and it's not necessarily the most relevant thing but as a three times grounding event to relax the tension it would make sense.

Jimmy doesn't say a word about Anya's death. I love when he can't even perceive her or Curly after Daisuke is injured from the vent. Maybe it's because he's focusing on Daisuke right now but this is all he sees, and a grave in the hallway he has no words for. Every time he talks to her he finds a way to call her useless, knowing his treatment of her and her pregnancy which he caused aren't helping her productivity.

Anya's rape kills her from the inside out. Almost an equal act to murder. Curly is expected to mediate for the two of them but he doesn't and there's like an undertone of this abuse by Jimmy throughout the whole game. Everyone but Daisuke knows and none of them will talk about it.

Because of Jimmy, the crew loses faith in Curly, his body is nearly destroyed and Jimmy's own actions slowly alienate everyone from him. He has Daisuke on his side just because he's young naive and doesn't know what he did to Anya.

Even after Curly has been stripped of all autonomy, Jimmy wants to put responsibility onto him. To tell the story of the ship. And it's Curly's fault this ever happened because he didn’t take responsibility for Jimmy's actions like he's meant to as Captain. Didn't reprimand him or punish him or get him away from Anya, stayed courteous as a friend and didn't realise how much of a monster Jimmy really was even as it stared him in the face. Couldn't even keep the gun away from him.

Curly and Jimmy both share a piece of Curly inside themselves. After Jimmy cuts a slice of his leg for each of the crew, his plate is clean in the next scene.

Jimmy doesn't really want to be Captain in the end either, he just wants to be in control of everyone. His control destroys them in different ways. Possessing Anya, sending Daisuke into a death trap, killing Swansea when he tries his hardest to atop him and in the end he giving care to Curly and locking him in the Cryopod as he sets himself free with a gunshot.

They know how valuable they are and it's only as valuable as what they're carrying and when they learn it's just mouthwash, their hopes of rescue become impossibly small. There is this theme of labour exploitation that's somehow not too relevant to the message of the game but adds to the trauma. If there is a non harmonious crew, collective punishment may be required. A gun on board for captain only in case of crew unrest. Even while the crash warning sounds they learn their pay will be docked (so maybe it isn't so bad if we all die tight now after all).

I really liked it. This compressed sci fi setting is always charming to me and it's definitely horror genre in a horror way more than a fear way. The monster hallucinations didn't do much for me but they kept the gameplay fresh and I can see their purpose narratively as well.

Adding this but well I love the cannibalism element of course. With Jimmy's delusion, and it's the only meat he can get. It's his way of possessing Curly for the final time before he dies. Maybe it's out of love or hatred too. Is it cake video gone wrong.

I beat the FFVI pixel remaster today and it's the first time I've ever actually played it and not just watched an LP, so now I can officially say it's my least favorite between 4, 5, and 6.

I've played 4 and 5 several times and I adore them so much so it was really awesome getting to play 6 for the first time, I had a really good time!

But I guess if I had to, my rank of the three would be 5, 4, then 6 but y’know it's totally subjective and I don't care which ones are "better" or not, that doesn't matter to me in the slightest. This is purely based on which of the three I like the most.

I had some gripes with 6, probably I guess the dumbest one being I didn't like that there are 14 party members if you get all of them and it just feels like too much for them not to have done what 4 did and have characters come in and out and some only be temporary members. Or at least do what 4 also did and allow you to have 5 party members at a time. I liked the parts where you had to split into multiple parties because that made an interesting puzzle dynamic and also allowed you to use characters outside of your main party but I really just felt like 90% of the characters just kinda sit there and collect dust but that could just be a me problem.

Like Terra, Celes, Edgar, Sabin, and Locke are the only characters I felt like really mattered at the end of the day. Sabin maybe a little iffy in that regard even, Edgar was more important to the story than he was and is my favorite character in the game, but I love him so nyeh! And Cyan was more important than some because his arc was intwined in the main story more at the beginning at least and I LOVED his whole story start to finish I thought it was really well done. And maybe Setzer is kinda important too because of the Blackjack and the Falcon. But even then, he's not so much important to the main story beyond that. But everyone else felt like they could've been there for a storyline and then gone away and not been full party members, or not have been there, and like Umaro and Gogo are fun to unlock but they're not needed? Plus my issue with Umaro is the same issue I have with Gau in that you can't control their moves and I hate that. You have more control with Gau but it takes a lot more work, which is fine, it's also exhausting and I just didn't have the gumption to train him after a certain point. I don't know, I guess my main issue is just there's too many party members and not enough space for them and that makes me sad because I love FF characters so much I want them all to hang out and get their use I don't like neglecting characters and with 6 there's so many that you have to and I'm sad about it.

I was also confused by Kefka's motivation, like I know he wanted to destroy the world and everything along with it but I think I missed the why or at least forgot somewhere along the way because I left the game asking that question. I also just didn't like the ending as much as 4 and 5 it felt very abrupt. You beat Kefka, the tower comes crumbling down, and we escape via character credit cards and fly over the world. It's beautiful seeing the recovery of the world and people rebuilding their homes and Katarin having her baby and I will say Terra letting her hair down and just basking in the wind and the freedom and the beauty of it all did hit me hard, I felt so happy and I adore her.

But yeah, 6 was great though despite my silly and kinda stupid gripes. I loved how 6 wasn't afraid to get dark, which I was fully aware of going in. I mean, the whole Doma thing at the beginning...? That's fucked up, like I loved and emotionally hated Cyan's introduction story because it's so messed up. Kefka is truly horrible and twisted, and that's what makes him a great villain. Also Celes waking up from her year long coma after the world is destroyed and being told by Cid that everyone that used to be on the island with them over time gave up hope and threw themselves from the cliffs in despair. And when Cid dies if you fail to save him Celes does the same, she fully intended to kill herself and that's the intro to act 2. Among other things too, 6 wasn't afraid to get dark and I loved that. I really loved this game.

And unsurprisingly for me of all people, my favorite part of the game was the opera sequence, there's a reason it's such a famous moment in the series and one of the most iconic and well remembered parts of the game. It's amazing. And I LOVED that they added vocals to the pixel remaster even when I was playing with the original music like I always do when presented with the option. It made the sequence so much more magical for me as a vocalist and just someone who lives and breathes music, I felt that sequence in my soul. It was amazing.

But at the end of the day, FFV you will always be the classic FF king of my heart.

Hmmm, honestly, I don't think there's a correct answer to that. The book serves as some sort of test for future Obelian rulers, and since Athy was sent to the LP world, and Lucas went back to the past, I think it must be a way for whoever touches it to come to terms with whatever unresolved issue they have. Be it trauma, self-doubt, etc. So that "truth" will always be personal.

Athy is constantly doubting the place she has, if she is deserving of Claude's (and everyone else's) love, if those feelings are even real. So it makes sense for the book to transport her to the LP world, where she learned/experienced the unjust treatment LP! Athy was subjected to. Plus a lot of things were revealed to help us/Athy understand why the events in LP happened (Jennette's black magic, her real feelings, Claude's feelings, etc), something she didn't know before. But yeah, I think that was a trauma she needed to overcome, and understand that LP is not the world she lives in. By the end, she decides to not help Claude wake up, knowing it was not her place to intervene in his relationship with LP! Athanasia.

As for Lucas, his teacher/father figure literally killed himself in front of him and said some rather... harsh things to him as his last words. That's a source of deep trauma for him too, even if he shows it less than Athy. In my opinion, what Lucas needed to do was let go of the past, and realize that he has found a reason to live in Athy.

That's just my interpretation though!

ep33 (1/3): relitigating the suicide scene

so picking right up where we left off, I know wwx is extremely unpopular now but does this asshole have to bring up the massacre at LP??? that seems targeted towards wwx's specific and fairly private insecurities. but once someone is a villain, that means everything they've ever done is tainted. so as if this wasn't bad enough, now he has people on all sides turning on him with emotional attacks far more damaging than any physical wounds they could impart

oh yeah and people telling him directly to die. really heartbreaking to see this happen to a character so vigorously attached to life, someone who's been beaten down again and again and who refused to die. and wwx loves his life. loved. you can tell how devastating this is to push someone like him to this

this will always be the most meaningful way that he dies. his suicide is one of the most powerful and significant events in the story. having him torn apart just hits different

first you tell him to play, now you tell him to stop. it's a good thing he never listens to you. man, but lwj was useless this night

jc's emotional journey here is worth paying attention to. obviously it's not the black and white hero-vanquishing-evil scene we saw at the beginning of the show, but I've seen multiple readings that try to simplify it in other ways, that try to say 'this is a private moment between only two characters', between wwx and jc or between wwx and lwj, when I think it's very clearly a significant interaction with both of them. jc and lwj are the two characters with the most significant relationships with wwx, and neither of their respective roles in the story can be shoved aside for the other. at least, not in the flashback arc. postres it's a bit of a different story

anywa wwx is never going to have a simple relationship with jc. especially not here or now, not after what just happened.

I have seen people criticize jc really harshly for killing his brother, which is annoying because it doesn't offer any context as to who wwx is or why this is happening. anyone can kill their brother, it all depends on why. I'd rather criticize him for things in the context of the scene

and why is he smiling? well, like with lwj, maybe it's nice to see a familiar face at the very end.

wwx is already planning to die here. jc's actions don't make that more likely, but they probably hurt wwx on an emotional level. or maybe he finds it fitting, a just end after what he feels like is an unforgivable crime. I don't think that makes jc's actions here better, btw. I still think this was a horrible thing to do to someone who loved and sacrificed so much for his family and for innocent people, whatever his mistakes.

he looked resigned in the moment, but revisiting it, it looks like he's bracing for pain. oh god this all hurts so much. I don't care who 'really' killed him. the emotional scars matter far more. and this isn't something wwx is going to forget when he wakes up. he has his eyes closed so he can't see how scared and sad jc looks but like, does it matter? must he coddle jc even now, when jc's about to try to kill him?

yeah it's pretty unambiguous that he stabbed that rock on purpose in order to dislodge it. the camera pans back up to him, he looks determined and angry, and he twists his sword. I've seen so many arguments and speculations on it and um he doesn't look confused or anything just terribly terribly sad. there's part of him that's grieving wwx too even as he tries to kill him. damn, but he always gets in his own way

I do think it's significant that he doesn't outright stab wwx - after all, why change it from ep1? maybe to make clear that this was a suicide more than a murder, despite appearances

yeah wwx sees what's happening and twists out pretty clearly

and jc looks...stunned? shocked? horrified? a bit dumb with his hair like that. this is hardly a straightforward or easy emotional time for him. he probably went home and cried for week and refused to consider that he might have been crying for wwx just as much as jyl

that being said I have limited sympathy for him over grieving wwx. like he didn't even try. he wanted him dead, and he died. though characteristically, wwx succeeded where he failed in actually doing the deed

The Maggie theory

Good Omens S2 spoiler ahead.

I've read on some of the fan theories on Maggie.

That she could be a demon, or that she could have been a person written by Metatron or that she's just sus in general.

I would like to present to you another evidence on why Maggie could be written by Metatron. I noticed on ep 1. (I haven't read about this anywhere else but I'm sure I'm not the only who noticed it. )

First let me present the facts on the first scene on ep1.

Maggie hasn't paid rent in months. She owes thousands of pounds.

She has enough conscience in mind to at least leave because of this. Stating that she's going in 2 weeks.

Aziraphale mentions that he hasn't collected rent which makes it his fault.

Then Aziraphale mentions that if the shop is gone, where will he get his music.

Ok, what I thought first was just that 'oh, aziraphale is such an angel that he forgets he's supposed to do human responsibilities like being a proper landlord and collecting rent but fact number 4 makes us assume that Aziraphale is often there, getting music. So why was he not collecting rent? When he's such a regular? They make it seem like he's the only customer there as well.

But what if he's not?

1 and 2 suggests that if its been months that she hasn't paid rent, why give your 2 weeks notice now? You'd imagine that she'd have this conversation earlier. Because Aziraphale is a regular at the shop. Why wouldn't she talk about rent that was overdue? Its only NORMAL for a shop owner to think about rent right? So why didn't they had this conversation then? She was the one who initiated the conversation by sending that letter. If Aziraphale wasn't collecting but was going over to buy records, then shouldn't she have mentioned it then?

Which brings me to this possible conclusions.

Metatron made the mistake of making Maggie talk to Aziraphale about rent. Metatron surely doesn't know how businesses work. Months and they couldn't pay for rent, how are they paying for everything else? No one is in the shop, her LPs are being sold at 8 pounds and she owes Aziraphale thousands of pounds on rent. Quite suspicious right? That she allowed to accumulate that much debt. But despite that, she still has the time and money apparently to become a regular at Nina's shop. Oat milk latte. This doesn't add up. Unless she's just a written additional character with a backstory that doesn't make sense for a normal human. Like the backstory being given never happened. Metatron made the connection of Aziraphale's love for music and other worldly things and think what story would endear Aziraphale to this character. Oh. Make her a great granddaughter of someone he knew and that he's often there buying music, he's a nice angel who doesn't need money so of course he at the capacity to forgive her debt but he's being set up.

Also, for someone who clearly is going bankrupt, she can give Nina a free LP but its weird that she doesn't even offer that to Aziraphale. She owes him so much... She goes out of her way to give Nina one but doesn't think of giving Aziraphale more? hmmmmm

Anyway. yeah. Maggie is sus. Maggie is a book character. I can't believe I still have so much thought about the new season. Amazon needs to pay their actors and writers asap so we can have s3 soon. ughhhh

umineko- between ch7 & 8

tw for sexual assault in this one again. long post. let's get Political! i wasn't aware umineko is 55 dollars on steam. i know its a lot of words and they've got music and voice acting and two sets of art but, thats a lot of fucking money for a fiction book. the steam release doesn't even include the side stories.

umineko has a lot of dubiously canon side content released at conventions and promos and such, and of course bundled in japanese Special Edition rereleases. the LP im reading puts all the side stories at the end (all the question arc ones together and all the answer arc ones together) even when they're set and released between episodes. i think they're all fan translated? in the question arcs, the side stories were pretty superfluous but still fun. there was a little interview with gohda, and a silly story about valentines day and white day so i read some of them now and. man.

there's one, "game master battler", set when he's preparing episode 6. the characters react to an out of universe character popularity poll and they're all asking battler to give them a good part in ep 6 so they become more popular. which is a fine premise, its very muppet show, and the same silly tone the valentines day story had. you can guess the conclusion of course, battler asks everyone for ridiculous favors but then he cant possibly make a story that highlights everyone at once. but like. when he asks for favors, he asks All of his aunts for sex acts. (as payment for both them And Their Families getting better parts.) and the seven sisters have to massage him or they wont be included at all. and six of them hold lucifer down while he assaults her. he doesn't explicitly rape her but the metaphor is clear. and like. what the hell!

when he perved on jessica it was one thing. he wasn't God Of The Setting at the time for starters. and yeah the seven sisters murdered him repeatedly in eroticized ways, but they're evil demons that were acting as extensions of beato. the idea that battler Would be a rapist or coerce people into sex if given the power is. not funny obviously, not matching the lighthearted tone they're going for, and most unfortunately, in character??? he's a rich boy who comes from a family where abuse and punching down are the rule, who grabs women's breasts so much it's a move in the fighting game. they make a lot of parallels between kinzo and battler and i guess Rapist is one of them. which is a Real Bummer! he's the protagonist! i think. they might decide in ep 8 that ange is the protagonist. i Want To Like Him and the titty grabbing previously had his Weird Maladjusted Logic that was so ridiculous it kinda softened the blow, and the erotic violence performed On him has the caveat of, in a non fantasy perspective all that happened in his imagination, and in a fantasy perspective its being done by Bad People

you could say "oh its just a side story its not canon" but like. everyone acts roughly in character, in an exaggerated comical way not unlike the valentine's day story. sure this event can be understood to "not really have happened" but it still says something About battler's character. the very next side story expands on ange's motives, it says that bernie made ange promise not to love or trust eva, and their Beef was entirely because of that. that's tragic and realistic (in an understanding where bernie isnt Real, she can represent a part of ange that blames eva using mystery-logic) and goes together with the ep 7 ending in a really nice way. i haven't had a place to talk about the Politics of umineko. kinzo and bici's connections to fascism aren't really remarked on by anyone else, but kinzo isn't really portrayed sympathetically. like he talks about how the main family didn't really believe in him and he went to war to die, but this is shown after six long chapters of him being pathetic and abusing Every Other Character. and he was already married with kids when he met bici... and the adults follow from him, right. like him abusing his kids is echoed throughout the family, yknow cycles of abuse. and someone like rosa is not /excused/ for abusing her kid, but we are still shown the circumstances that allow her to do it. so umineko is "anti family" if you want to be extremely reductive and that's so rare in Popular Media. umineko isn't really anti capitalist, but you could make an anticapitalist reading of it. like kinzo is a shithead and his treatment of workers is presented as Bad but this isn't shown as a systemic thing. well kyrie's family is also kinda awful. but like worlds where kinzo Isn't a shithead are happy healthy places. theres a lot of show of Ranks and Bureaucracy in Magic Land but its mostly like, flavor, nothing really comes of it. at least from my reading. another one of the side stories shows one of diana's minions being a hardass about The Law when she joins the magic cops. and trying to get the other cops to practice Law And Order by not drinking or smoking or going to the halloween party, and never using vernacular, which all goes poorly for her and its funny. its not deep social commentary or anything its kinda dilbert level. all that said... umineko Is, more than anything else, unambiguously pro autism!

ooc. something i wanna quickly touch upon because i'm looking for a good LP for rebirth to watch. it's something i saw some tweets about and its how zack does not really or should not or can't have that much of influence on the characters of ff7. basically the whole he is overrated and only there because the story needed a 'fake cloud' or something like that crap. thankfully my brain errored mid way and tl refreshed and i lost the tweet so whatever~ and i remember seeing something about it here on dinglr a while back so... the beef is with zack's relationship to tsung, sephiroth and cissnei and the changes occurred within them because of him.

i get that zack does not seem like a "reliable" character and you wouldn't think he is capable of impacting people's lives around him but if you actually played crisis for a couple of hours you will see that HE IS the kind of character that influences people.

i'll keep this concise because i want to go back to this in another post and make it lengthy but after i watch rebirth and take a moment to tie things up u know.

angeal: the guy for a moment lost (more like almost gave up??? help me on this angeal's fans/rpers) his own 'ideals' but because zack kept cherishing them, and actually applying them, angeal felt like ye this is actually could work in the end. he wanted to see how his ideals, his dreams and legacy are going to be carried by someone like zack; hence his replica followed him to the church and kept protecting him and aerith. angeal may have thought he is a monster and all of that but zack didn't make him feel like that even when he was dying. (listen i will go hyaena on the angeal part but imma be a good girl and stay my tongue till i see more of rebirth..ANGEAL WAAAA!!!!!) OK I LIED!!!! ANGEAL'S EVERYONE IDEAL MENTOR! AND ZACK GOT HIM TO BE HIS MENTOR! AND EVERYTHING!
